A few questions - interview with death metal band from United Kingdom - VOID BELOW.

Recenze/review - VOID BELOW - World Undone (2023):

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

We are Void Below, a Lovecraftian death/doom metal band from Whitehaven, N/W Cumbria (U.K)

We are a four piece band consisting of:
James Maxwell - Guitar/Vox.
Kyle Jenkins - Guitar.
Looke Norman - Bass.
Brad Messenger - Drums.

The band formed in late 2019 but things were initially interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the lockdowns, we got back to rehearsals again and started work on our debut E.P “Void Below” which was released in mid 2022.

After our first wave of live shows following the EP release, we got right into writing the second. We felt like we had a lot of lost time to make up for.

“World Undone” was recorded in mid 2023 and released in the November of that year.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

We recorded World Undone at Soundwave studios with Dave Roberts, who Recorded, Mixed and Mastered the whole thing.

Dave recorded our first EP, he knew exactly what we wanted from the sound and production and captured it so well. we were really happy with how things went, so it felt natural to go back to him for the second release.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

There are no physical copies of our music available at the minute, however it is something that we are planning for the future.

Currently the new EP is available on all major streaming platforms and from our Bandcamp page, where the files can be purchased directly from us.

All of our music can also be found on our YouTube channel, including the video for our latest single, “Pillars Ov Pestilence”.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

James Maxwell writes the lyrics for all the songs.

“I tend to get a feel of a song then decide what I want to call it and this just tends to pop in my head then ill expand the idea with lyrics based on the title this can end up being in depth about an emotion or a story to tell.

I'll write some lyrics and go over the song then as a group we sometimes might pick certain phrases that may repeat or be added to section to give the song that extra punch vocally. The lyrics are themed on the Lovecraftian Mythos”.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

James came up with the lovecraftian theme and the logo.

The logo/font is very simplistic and all imaginary is presented in black and white. The subjects, story’s and their representing imagery are therefore kept at the forefront.

The artwork is created and sourced by the band. Every aspect of our work requires representing imagery to build the theme, feel and story of our music. hiring artists therefore wouldn’t be practical for us, also we have the ability to make everything as personal as we need it.

We consider social media very important, and our content is an extension of the above, though it’s great being able to interact closely with our fans and we try to be as active as possible online.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takes care about you?

We released the EP independently.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

Morbid Angel, Death & Incantation would be the main three. Although the members of the band all have varying tastes and bring different elements to the music, these influences are all presented in the death/doom style and heavily influenced by the above bands.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

Yes we did send the EP to a few record labels, we had positive feedback. Hopefully something can happen on that front in the future.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

We have actually played less than 10

Live shows. our focus over the last 9 months has been on the new E.P, so in 2024 we hope to announce a lot more live shows and focus more on that side of the band.

We have played some local shows as well as others in Scotland and wider Cumbria including all day events and small festivals. we enjoy playing any kind of gig, we get to see how our songs are received by people haven’t seen us before or by people who have came to see us for the first time, though we have some loyal fans who travel to see us regularly and we appreciate it all massively. We always get good reactions/reviews and comments, so we are looking forward to 2024.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

We are gigging this year, and that will be the focus, but also working quietly on a release later in the year. After that however, the next step for us would be to start writing and putting together an album, we already have so many ideas floating around.

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

Thanks for the interview.
