A few questions - interview with death metal band from Estonia - KOFFIN.

A few questions - interview with death metal band from Estonia - KOFFIN.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

The band was formed in 2019 by Herman and Sander. We play Death Metal with strong influence from Old-School American and Scandinavian Death Metal bands. Now we are a 4-piece band, with Kenomar and Johan-Markus in the lineup. We all have distinctively different views on extreme metal and music in general, molding our composed music into an all-around genre rollercoaster. But still staying mostly in the boundaries of old-school death metal.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

The demo was recorded in RJ Studio/Rehearsal room. The demo was self-recorded in 1 day. Because of the pandemic, Sander recorded all the guitars, bass and vocals. He also did the initial mix and Karl Korts from Strok Records did the final touches and mastering. We really like the sound of the demo.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

We decided to release the demo on 37 hand-numbered cassettes, as it would be a nice collector’s item, which sold out in 1 day, by the way. We’ve been talking to different labels about CD and tape re-releases.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

The lyrics are mostly written by Sander, although Herman has contributed a lot aswell. The lyrics are mostly all over the place. They are about religion, society and fantasy.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

All the logos, banners and artwork is done by our good friend Skaðvaldur. We think that promotion on social networks is very important.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

We chose Strok records, because Karl, the owner is a really good friend of ours and seeing the success of the Grav Morbus (one man black metal project from Estonia) album, we thought about collaborating with him. We are really satisfied with Strok Records and definitely want to work with him in the future!

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

Sander: I get a lot of inspiration from Thrash Metal. There is a lot of influence from Slayer and Megadeth for example. From a Death Metal perspective there is Vader, Cannibal Corpse, Seance, Crematory, Suffocation, Baphomet, Deicide, Malevolent Creation.

Herman: My main inspiration was Swedish Old-school death metal, mainly from the band Grave but also Carnage, Crematory and Dismember. I also took some influence from Florida, from the bands like Cannibal Corpse and Deicide. The foundation of my grooves is built on bands like Pantera, Crowbar, Down and Sodom.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

We didin't send our music to any labels, but we’ve been talking to Morbid Chapel Records from Poland and Life After Death from USA about working on some reissues.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

Right now we have only played two gigs - 1. in our rehearsal room for a close inner circle. 2. was in Tallinn on the 12. of June. We would love to have an outdoor gig some time. But we also really like club gigs, because of the intense atmosphere.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

Sander: Play gigs and hopefully release our debut album in the coming years.

Herman: I want to overthrow my current limits and see my music and playing get better over time. I'd like to write simple Old-School death metal but also write something that would refreshen the state of our band and the scene around it. And i would definitely want to play at some festivals and abroad. Poland, was actually the top 1 place in my mind if i first thought about performing abroad.

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

We have Facebook, Youtube, Bandcamp and e-mail. Our songs will also be on Spotify in few days.
