Pokaždé, když exhumuji další ze starých prašivých hrobů, tak jsem zvědavý, kdo se ukrývá uvnitř. Většinou se jedná o obyčejné lidi, kteří zemřeli přirozenou smrtí, ale někdy můžete potkat prokleté a zlé jedince. Jejich rakve bývají nasáklé zkaženou krví a vznáší se kolem nich děsivý zápach tlení. Jakoby i po smrti byly do jejich tváří otištěny veškeré zlé a zvrácené činy. Tentokrát jsem v jednom malém belgickém městě a na místním hřbitově vstupuji do hrobky s názvem TORTURERAMA. Na kamenných oltářích leží padlí kněží a drží v rukou jejich letošní nové album.
Moje záhrobní mise pokračuje. Kdysi dávno, na konci osmdesátých let jsem byl stejně jako tahle smečka prokletý starým, poctivým a prašivým death metalem. Také jsem tomuto stylu stále věrný a už jiný nebudu. Milejší je mi vždy záhrobní mše a klasický pohřeb do země, než moderní kremace. Novinku jsem si pustil poprvé velmi brzy ráno. Bylo už léto a nebývale chladno. Melodie se mi ihned dostaly do podvědomí, zaryly se mi hluboko pod kůží. Začal jsem se kývat jako starý hrobník do rytmu a nechal se převést na druhou stranu, do země nekonečných stínů.
Tahle belgická smečka uctívá staré death metalové modly jako DISMEMBER, AUTOPSY, REPUGNANT, INTERMENT, ale třeba i MAIM, DEATH BREATH, ENTRAPMENT, MORDBRAND. Dělá to s morbidní elegancí starých mistrů a přidává do skladeb své vlastní nápady a invenci. Výsledkem je album, které řeže tou správnou stranou nože, je plesnivé ze své podstaty. Ocení jej jak všichni fanoušci starých dobrých časů, tak i démoni a prokletí. Jednotlivé motivy jsou velmi dobře napsané, mají poctivý, surový a mrazivý zvuk. Poslech se tak dá s klidem přirovnat k návštěvě starých katakomb, márnic, dávno opuštěných pitevních sálů a jatek, ve kterých je stále do zdí otištěná nekonečná bolest obětí. "The Elaborate Theatre of the Macabre" je přesně tím druhem nahrávky, která ve vás probudí nostalgické vzpomínky a vy si začnete podvědomě podupávat nohou do rytmu, mlátit hlavou do zdi a po nějakém čase si tuhle desku zařadíte jako já do svého playlistu. Kapela má na svém kontě ještě jedno album a dvě EP. Určitě se na ně také podívejte, stojí rozhodně za to. Dovedu si představit dávno opuštěné katakomby, umístěné dole pod ruinami znesvěceného kostela. V nich tahle smečka, stojící na hromadě z lebek a prašivých kostí. Vzduchem se vznáší ostré melodie, divoké bicí i řev bestie. Křičím spolu s kapelou do tmy, vzývám své vlastní démony. Ano, letošní novinka mě přesvědčila, dávám jí známku vysoké kvality a znovu a znovu zapínám play. Pokaždé, když exhumuji další ze starých prašivých hrobů, tak jsem zvědavý, kdo se ukrývá uvnitř. Every time I exhume another one of those old, dilapidated graves, I’m curious to see who’s hiding inside. Most of the time, they’re ordinary people who died of natural causes, but sometimes you come across cursed and evil individuals. Their coffins are often soaked in putrid blood, and a terrifying stench of decay hangs around them. It’s as if, even in death, all their evil and depraved deeds are etched onto their faces. This time I’m in a small Belgian town, and at the local cemetery I’m entering a tomb called TORTURERAMA. Fallen priests lie on stone altars, holding this year’s new album in their hands.
My mission from beyond the grave continues. Long ago, in the late 1980s, I, just like this pack, was cursed by old, honest, and grimy death metal. I, too, remain faithful to this style and never will change. I’ve always preferred a funeral mass and a traditional burial to modern cremation. I listened to the new album for the first time very early in the morning. It was already summer, yet unusually cold. The melodies immediately seeped into my subconscious, burrowing deep under my skin. I began swaying to the rhythm like an old gravedigger and let myself be carried over to the other side, into the land of endless shadows.
This Belgian band pays homage to old death metal icons like DISMEMBER, AUTOPSY, REPUGNANT, INTERMENT, but also MAIM, DEATH BREATH, ENTRAPMENT, and MORDBRAND. They do so with the morbid elegance of the old masters, while adding their own ideas and creativity to the songs. The result is an album that cuts with the right edge of the knife it’s rotten to the core. It will be appreciated by all fans of the good old days, as well as by demons and the damned. The individual tracks are very well written and feature a solid, raw, and chilling sound. Listening to it can easily be compared to a visit to ancient catacombs, morgues, long-abandoned autopsy rooms, and slaughterhouses, where the endless suffering of the victims is still imprinted on the walls. “The Elaborate Theatre of the Macabre” is exactly the kind of record that will stir up nostalgic memories in you, and you’ll find yourself subconsciously tapping your foot to the beat, banging your head against the wall, and after a while, adding this album to your playlist, just like I did. The band has one other album and two EPs to their credit. Be sure to check them out as well they’re definitely worth it. I can picture long-abandoned catacombs, located deep beneath the ruins of a desecrated church. Inside them, this pack stands on a pile of skulls and mangy bones. Sharp melodies, wild drums, and the roar of a beast float through the air. I scream along with the band into the darkness, summoning my own demons. Yes, this year’s new release has won me over; I give it top marks and hit play again and again. Every time I exhume another of those old, decaying graves, I’m curious to see who’s hiding inside. Mostly they’re ordinary people who died of natural causes, but sometimes you might encounter cursed and evil individuals. Their coffins are often soaked in rotten blood, and a foul stench of decay hangs around them. It’s as if, even in death, all their evil and depraved deeds are etched onto their faces. I’m not leaving this grave anytime soon. Morbid, moldy, oozing death metal that will reduce you to dust! An album that will bury you alive!
