Vždycky je jednodušší někoho zabít, než s ním mluvit. Tuhle větu jsem někde četl a zaujala mě. Svět je již několik let na rozcestí. Na jednu stranu zde máme dokonalé technologie (i na zabíjení), umělou inteligenci. Na druhou jsme zapomněli na obyčejný reálný život. Všechno je hrozně povrchní. Něco jsem již zažil a často si připadám, že jsem právě ve starém sci-fi příběhu. Proroci měli pravdu. Buď přežijeme nebo zničíme sami sebe. Často se mi poslední dobou stává, že od všeho utíkám, zavírám oči a toulám se v lesích. Vždy si s sebou beru nějakou dobrou hudbu. Norští ETERNITY jsou klasickým norským black metalem, který je reálný, ryzí a zahraný od srdce.

Možná a nebo právě proto jsem si jejich novou desku "Mundicide" brával často na své výlety. Těšil jsem se, až zmizím z města a navštívím staré pohřebiště. Temnota, chlad, několik mrtvých zvířat u cesty a k tomu živočišná a mrazivá hudba. Řekněte mi, co si víc může starý fanoušek přát? Tohle album se opravdu hodně povedlo!


Počátky této divoké smečky sahají až do devadesátých let minulého století. Všem notoricky známé příběhy jednoho kultu. Máte tak jistotu, že vám hudbu hrají jedni z nejpovolanějších. Přiznám se, že již při prvním setkání jsem měl pocit, že se procházím někde kolem Bergenu. Po formální stránce je vše v podstatě dokonalé. Prašivý, chladný zvuk, obal, který přesně vystihuje náladu celé desky, ale hlavně celkový dojem z alba, se nedají vlastně ani moc vyjádřit slovy. Můžu mít vedle sebe desítku kapel, které budou hrát podobně a nakonec si stejně vyberu ETERNITY. Hrají totiž opravdově, uvěřitelně. Black metal je jejich přirozeností, stejně jako pro šelmy lov. Také vám připadá, že spousta lidí má dnes na obličejích masky vytvořené z přetvářky, lží a nenávisti? Garantuji vám, že tihle norští maniaci jim je sundají a hodí jim do tváře kusy shnilého masa. Songy jsou napsány s elegancí starých mistrů. Není divu, rodokmen kapely je opravdu jeden z nejlepších. Líbí se mi syrové pasáže, i melodické vyhrávky. Poslouchat "Mundicide" je jako se procházet po lesním hřbitově. Tisíce vzpomínek, příběhů, krutosti. Ale také čistoty, kterou smrt nabízí. Tahle nahrávka je vybroušená k dokonalosti, jako černý diamant. Je studená ze své podstaty, přesto vám shoří v rukou a spálí vás na popel. Pokud máte tenhle styl rádi, nezbývá než pokleknout. Opět se totiž jedná o prvotřnídní materiál od nejpovolanějších. Dokonalá esence severského black metalu, temnoty, chladu a nekonečného utrpení! Mrazivá výpověď o stavu lidstva!

It's always easier to kill someone than to talk to them. I read that line somewhere and it caught my attention. The world has been at a crossroads for years. On the one hand we have perfect technology (even for killing), artificial intelligence. On the other, we have forgotten about ordinary real life. Everything is terribly superficial. I've experienced some of it and often feel like I'm in an old sci-fi story. The prophets were right. We either survive or we destroy ourselves. I often find myself running away from everything lately, closing my eyes and wandering in the woods. I always take some good music with me. Norway's ETERNITY is classic Norwegian black metal that is real, pure and played from the heart.

Maybe or perhaps that's why I often take their new album "Mundicide" on my trips. I was looking forward to getting out of town and visiting an old burial ground. Darkness, coldness, a few dead animals by the roadside, and animalistic and chilling music to boot. Tell me, what more could an old fan ask for? This album is really good!


The origins of this wild band go back to the 1990s. The notorious stories of a cult. So you can be sure you're getting music played by some of the most credible. I must admit that the first time I met them, I felt like I was walking around Bergen. Formally, everything is pretty much perfect. The dusty, cold sound, the cover art that accurately captures the mood of the whole album, but mainly the overall impression of the album, can't really be put into words. I can have ten bands next to me that will play similarly and in the end I will still choose ETERNITY. They play real, believable music. Black metal is their nature, just like hunting for the beasts. Do you also think that a lot of people nowadays have masks on their faces made of pretence, lies and hatred? I guarantee you these Norwegian maniacs will take them off and throw chunks of rotten meat in their faces. The songs are written with the elegance of the old masters. No wonder, the band's pedigree is truly one of the best. I like the raw passages, and the melodic flourishes. Listening to "Mundicide" is like walking through a forest graveyard. Thousands of memories, stories, cruelty. But also the purity that death offers. This record is polished to perfection, like a black diamond. It's cold by nature, yet it will burn in your hands and burn you to ashes. If you like this style, you have no choice but to take a knee. For once again, this is first-rate material from the best of the best. The perfect essence of Nordic black metal, darkness, coldness and endless suffering! A chilling statement on the state of humanity!

Kdysi jsem s thrash metalem vyrůstal. Dodnes se jedná o styl, který mám rád. Je ale velkou pravdou, že si již velmi vybírám, které kapely pustím do svého přehrávače. Tím, jak se stal tenhle styl zase populárním, objevila se velká spousta mladých kapel, které se snaží oživit ducha starých časů. Abych pravdu řekl, tak většině se to moc nedaří. Většinou mívají průměrný zvuk i nápady. A je úplně jedno, jestli se stanou v rámci stylu známými. Běžný posluchač sežere skoro všechno.

Jenže, já tenhle styl poslouchám přes třicet let a abych pravdu řekl, tak dnes jsem již jinde. Občas se ale objeví smečky, které mě zaujmou. Třeba dánští DEMOLIZER na to jdou velmi dobře. Nesnaží se jen kopírovat své vzory, ale přidávají i vlastní nápady a invenci. Jasně, základem je klasika, notoricky známé postupy. Pánové pak přidávají tolik potřebný drive a zajímavé melodie. Koneckonců, posuďte sami. 


Novinka "Post Necrotic Human" je zběsilou energickou jízdou od začátku do konce. To by nebylo zase tolik zajímavé. Pánové ale umí všem pořádně nakopat zadky. Mají parádní zvuk, obal, všechno sedí perfektně na svých místech. Občas přijdou i pomalejší pasáže, které mě osobně velmi baví. Je znát, že si DEMOLIZER dali s deskou velkou práci. Jasně, tohle všechno jsme už dávno všichni slyšeli tisíckrát, ale co taky dnes ne, že ano? Mě osobně se nové album opravdu líbí a abych pravdu řekl, tak je to po dlouhé době zase jednou stylová nahrávka, u které si podupávám nohou, usmívam se pod vousy a mám velkou chuť skočit do mosh-pitu. Nic nového, ale není to jen dobré řemeslo. Tahle smečka přidává i něco navíc. Spoustu zajímavých momentů, změn a pasáží. Narozdíl od jiných umí opravdu hrát a já si tak můžu vychutnat zase jednou stylově velmi podařené dílo. No řekněte, co si víc vlastně může fanoušek přát? Energií nabité riffy, ostrý vokál, bicí, u kterých vám popraskají všechny kosti v těle, ale i řezající melodie. Dejte mi hegrot někdo do ruky kladivo, ať můžu jít zbourat zeď! V současné době, kdy spousta velkých a známých kapel hraje jako chcíplí psi, jsou DEMOLIZER více než jen dobrou náhradou. Vždycky budu ctít staré legendy, ale tuhle hudbu mají hrát mladí, naštvaní kluci, kteří dokáží všem rozsekat obličeje. Album jsem na sebe nechal působit poměrně dlouhý čas a potvrdilo se mi, že jsem měl pravdu. Tohle je přesně muzika, která koluje i v mých žilách. Thrash metal po okraj narvaný třeskavou směsí! Headbanging forever!

I used to grow up with thrash metal. To this day it is still a style I like. But it's very true that I'm already very selective about which bands I put on my player. As the style has become popular again, a lot of young bands have emerged that are trying to revive the spirit of the old days. To be honest, most of them aren't doing a very good job of it. Most of them have a mediocre sound and ideas. And it doesn't matter if they become well known within the style. The average listener will eat up just about anything.

I've been listening to this style for over thirty years and to be honest, I'm in a different place now. But occasionally there are packs that catch my attention. For example, Danish DEMOLIZER are very good at it. They don't just try to copy their role models, they add their own ideas and inventiveness. Of course, the basis is the classics, the notorious methods. The gentlemen then add much needed drive and interesting melodies. After all, judge for yourself.


The new "Post Necrotic Human" is a furious energetic ride from beginning to end. That wouldn't be so interesting. But the gentlemen know how to kick ass. They've got a great sound, a great cover, everything fits perfectly in place. There are some slower passages that I personally enjoy. It's clear that DEMOLIZER have put a lot of work into the record. Sure, we've all heard all of this a thousand times before, but what's not to like nowadays, right? Personally, I really like the new album and to be honest, it's once again after a long time a stylish record that makes me tap my foot, smile under my beard and have a great desire to jump into a mosh pit. Nothing new, but it's not just good craftsmanship. This pack adds a little something extra. Lots of interesting moments, changes and passages. Unlike others, they can really play and I can enjoy once again a stylistically very successful work. What more could a fan ask for? Energy-packed riffs, sharp vocals, drums that will crack every bone in your body, and cutting melodies. Somebody put a hammer in my hand so I can go knock down a wall! In this day and age, when a lot of big and famous bands are playing like dead dogs, DEMOLIZER are more than just a good substitute. I'll always respect the old legends, but this music is supposed to be played by young, angry guys who can smash everyone's faces in. I let the album affect me for quite some time and I was proven right. This is exactly the music that runs through my veins. Thrash metal packed to the brim with a thrashy mixture! Headbanging forever!

Interview - GAROTED - Furious, demonic death metal that will burn you alive! Inferno!


Interview with death metal band from United States - GAROTED.

Ave GAROTED! Greetings from the Czech catacombs. I just got to work and since I walk by the cemetery, I had the feeling that all the dead had come out of their graves. I was listening to your new album "Bewitchment of the Dark Ages". I'm really enjoying the new album a lot. Can you tell us how it was made? It's been six long years since you released a new album. Why so long?

Nolan Weber: Glad you’re liking it! Yeah yeah we took our sweet time with this one but we had ALSO moved from Nebraska to Kansas City during the writing process and also released albums with our bands Verräter, Cataphract, and Varlok during all that time. We also did this while COVID was a bitch to deal around. The next album won’t take as long, I swear!

The first thing that literally hit me in the face was the cover art. It's signed by Chris Kiesling (Misantrophic-art). The artwork is reminiscent of old images from church books. Skeletons staggering under the stairs and the entrance to heaven at the top. Or hell? Can you tell us how the motif on the cover relates to the music, lyrics and based on what you chose it? For myself, I have to write one thing - the cover is excellent!

Drew Frerking: Like with any of our previous cover artworks, we typically hand over the lyrics and pre-mixes to use as inspiration. Chris did a phenomenal job on this piece for we had envisioned. It's essentially a representative of what the album title is about - medieval occult black magic in the dark ages.


Before we get to the music itself...I wonder what the lyrics on the album are about. Where did you get the inspiration for them? Are they themes from a book? Or a movie? What actually influences and inspires you when writing lyrics? And who is the author?

Drew Frerking: This album isn't as much of a concept album but the lyrics do have overarching themes throughout. Lyric writing on this album was split about 50/50 with our original vocalist Rayzor and myself. We're inspired by movies, games, books, you name it. We've always been very subtle and meticulous with our references so that's up to the listener to figure out where the inspiration comes from.

Nolan Weber: Not me, lol. I think the lyrics do great being used to describe punishing hangovers (“Egregiously spellbound by diabolical enthrallment”)!

We have a phrase in the Czech Republic. "If something's great, it'll kick you out of your pants". It happened to me when I first heard "Bewitchment of the Dark Ages" at home on my hi-fi tower. You have an absolutely killer sound. Raw, brutal, dark, but at the same time it retains an animalistic quality, if you know what I mean. Reminds me of the good old 90s. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Axel Harvey, who plays bass for MARASMUS among others. Why him? What studio did you record in and how did the whole process work?

Nolan Weber: We have been playing with his more active band GOURMAND for years! His studio is Axel Harvey Productions. I recorded with him for previous projects and I really wanted to do a death metal recording project with him because he’s killer to work with and we get brutally stoned on dabs and weed all throughout the process, making it fun as shit. Also, Drew had recorded every fucking single previous releases + all of our black metal bands and it was time Drew got to sit out and just play for once. The project went well, I had my drums all completed in a weekend and I believe Drew and Jonathan only took a couple days also.


You are also connected with MARASMUS thanks to the new singer Devon Ferrer. How did you get together and how long did it take to find him? I have to write that he did a great job.

Nolan Weber: He came to us like the stars aligning. When our singer Rayzor wanted out, Devo stepped in! I’ve known him since a teenager, he’s been around KC death metal for a long fucking time.

I can direct the same question to bassist Johathan Tennant. He's also a new member. When and how did you meet and get together? In terms of personnel changes, why did D. Stansberry leave? Aaron Kieth and Zach Mckeighan?

Drew Frerking: Jonathan goes way back to the 'Visions of Death and Destruction' album era. He had been a long fan of the band and we had a mutual interest in listening to extreme death metal. We met him through our circle of friends but it wasn't until a few years later that we had become musically involved with him. In fact he didn't play in Garoted at first, he was originally a live bassist for Nolan and I's black metal act Verräter. His first gig with Garoted was in April of 2016 when we opened for Absu. The other members have all left due to personal reasons or lack of continuing on. It’s fine though, no hard feelings and we all continue to keep in touch.


Both original members of GAROTED - Nolan Weber and Drew Frerking are active in many other bands. I was surprised that they are mostly bands that play black metal. Does that mean you are "originally black metallers"? You can hear references to that style on the GAROTED records. Is there any difference when you write new music for other bands? Doesn't it confuse you? How do you actually create new songs (for GAROTED)? Will you please let us have a glimpse into your "kitchen"?

Nolan Weber: Drew is more into black metal than me, haha. I have been in black metal bands since I was a teenager and it’s just always been a part of my life, it seems. Through note taking and recording demos, it gets less confusing. Garoted is our frenzy shit, black metal is just an entirely different outlet. Sure, some of it may seep into the Garoted sound but we would never write an all out black metal song cuz we need more anger than that for this band!


I'm always interested in the musicians' perspective on the scene, on the gigs, on the fans. How is death metal doing in America at the moment? You're from Kansas City (but originally from Nebraska, if I'm not mistaken). How is the scene there, do people attend shows? Do they buy merch, CDs?

Drew Frerking: We are originally a Nebraskan band yes. Our home grounds are less than 3 hours away from Kansas City and being from the Midwest, we're all sorta spread out and from small towns. Being from a smaller area like so makes one want to reach out in search of likeminded individuals. That's more or less how we ended up in Kansas City. The scene here is kind of non-existent anymore. There's still bands around and shows every so often but we don't really have a unified venue to meet and play as it was in the past. I'm sure that'll change in the future though, these types of things tend to come and go in cycles. People who do come out to shows though are very supportive for both local and touring bands because of this.


How do you approach concerts? Do you prefer to play clubs or festivals? How about some touring? I know it's a very expensive thing nowadays, but you're still young and I still think that's how your music will reach the most listeners even in the internet age. Are you planning any tours in support of the new album?

Nolan Weber: We like playing anywhere that can handle triggered kicks and break neck speeds. No tours in the works yet but we will, we just need to get a couple more ducks in a row.

The last question I would like to direct to your perception of music as a whole. Why did you start playing? What does death metal mean to you? Is it a lifestyle, an attitude towards society or "just" a hobby that you can't be without like me?

Nolan Weber: I just wanted to play fast, hard to play, furious music and Drew did too! To me, It’s an attitude towards extreme music. Death metal is the hardest genre in the world to play and I think we do it justice. A lot of bands simply don’t cut the cheese for me so I play death metal that I would like to hear.

Ave GAROTED! Zdravím vás z českých katakomb. Zrovna jsem přišel do práce a vzhledem k tomu, že chodím kolem hřbitova, měl jsem pocit, že z hrobů vylezli všichni mrtví. Poslouchal jsem totiž vaše nové album „Bewitchment of the Dark Ages“. Novinku si opravdu hodně užívám. Prozradíš nám, jak vznikala? Uběhlo dlouhých šest let, než jste vydali nové album. Proč vlastně tak dlouho?

Nolan Weber: Jsem rád, že se ti album líbí! Jo, jo, dali jsme si na čas, ale během psaní jsme se přestěhovali z Nebrasky do Kansas City a během té doby jsme také vydali alba s našimi kapelami Verräter, Cataphract a Varlok. Taky jsme to dělali v době, kdy tu byla ta svině COVID, se kterým jsme měli co dočinění. Příští album už nebude trvat tak dlouho, přísahám!

Jako první mě doslova uhodil do obličeje obal. Podepsán je pod ním Chris Kiesling (Misantrophic-art). Motiv připomíná staré obrazy z církevních knih. Kostry, potácející se pod schody a nahoře vstup do nebe. Nebo do pekla? Prozradíš nám, jak motiv na obalu souvisí s hudbou, texty a podle čeho jste jej vybírali? Za sebe musím napsat jediné - cover je vynikající!

Drew Frerking: Stejně jako u všech našich předchozích obalů obvykle předáváme texty a předmixované skladby, které slouží jako inspirace. Chris odvedl na tomto díle fenomenální práci, tak, jak jsme si ji představovali. V podstatě reprezentuje to, o čem je název alba - středověkou okultní černou magii v temném středověku.


Než přejdeme k samotné hudbě…zajímalo by mě, o čem jsou texty na albu. Kde jste pro ně brali inspiraci? Jedná se o motivy z nějaké knihy? Nebo filmu? Co tě vlastně ovlivňuje a inspiruje při psaní textů? A kdo je autorem?

Drew Frerking: Toto album není až tak koncepční, ale texty mají přesahující témata. O psaní textů na tomto albu jsme se s naším původním zpěvákem Rayzorem dělili zhruba půl na půl. Inspirovali jsme se filmy, hrami, knihami, prostě vším možným. Vždycky jsme byli velmi rafinovaní a precizní v našich odkazech, takže je na posluchači, aby přišel na to, odkud inspirace pochází.

Nolan Weber: Já ne, haha. Ale myslím, že se text ("Egregiously spellbound by diabolical enthrallment")! skvěle hodí k popisu kocoviny.

U nás v Čechách máme jedno takové rčení. Pokud je něco skvělé, tak tě to vystřelí z kalhot. Mě se to stalo, když jsem poprvé slyšel „Bewitchment of the Dark Ages“ doma na hi-fi věži. Máte absolutně zabijácký zvuk. Syrový, surový, temný, ale zároveň si zachovává živočišnost, jestli mi rozumíš. Připomíná mi stará dobrá devadesátá léta. Desku nahrával, mixoval i se postaral o mastering Axel Harvey, který mimo jiné hraje na basu u MARASMUS. Proč právě on? V jakém studiu jste nahrávali a jak celý proces probíhal?

Nolan Weber: S jeho aktivnější kapelou GOURMAND hrajeme už léta! Jeho studio je “Axel Harvey Productions”. Nahrával jsem s ním předchozí projekty a opravdu jsem s ním chtěl udělat death metalový hudební projekt, protože je to zabiják a po celou dobu nahrávání jsme brutálně zhulení drogami a trávou, takže je to sranda jako prase. Navíc Drew nahrával všechny předchozí desky + všechny naše blackmetalové kapely a bylo na čase, aby si Drew konečně taky jednou sedl a jenom hrál. Projekt šel dobře, já měl všechny bicí hotové za víkend a myslím, že Drewovi a Jonathanovi to trvalo taky jen pár dní.


S MARASMUS jste spojeni i díky novému zpěvákovi Devonovi Ferrerovi. Jak jste se dali dohromady a jak dlouho trvalo, než jste jej našli? Za sebe musím napsat, že odvedl skvělou práci.

Nolan Weber: Přišel k nám, jako by se spojily všechny hvězdy. Když chtěl náš zpěvák Rayzor odejít, Devo se do toho vložil! Znám ho už od puberty, pohybuje se kolem KC death metalu už sakra dlouho.

Stejnou otázku můžu směřovat i k basákovi Johathanovi Tennantovi. Je také novým členem. Kdy a jak jste se setkali a dali dohromady? Co se týká personálních změn, proč vlastně odešli D. Stansberry? Aaron Kieth a Zach Mckeighan?

Drew Frerking: Jonathan se vrací do dob alba “Visions of Death and Destruction”. Byl dlouholetým fanouškem kapely a měli jsme společné zájmy v poslechu extrémního death metalu. Seznámili jsme se s ním v okruhu našich přátel, ale hudebně jsme se s ním spojili až o několik let později. Ve skutečnosti v Garoted zpočátku nehrál, původně byl živým basákem blackmetalové kapely Verräter, ve které jsme s Nolanem působili. Jeho první koncert s Garoted se odehrál v dubnu 2016, kdy jsme předskakovali ABSU. Všichni ostatní členové odešli z osobních důvodů nebo kvůli tomu, že nechtěli pokračovat dál. Je to ale v pohodě, nic ve zlém a všichni jsme nadále v kontaktu.


Oba původní členové GAROTED - Nolan Weber a Drew Frerking působí v mnoha dalších kapelách. Překvapilo mě, že jsou to převážně smečky, které hrají black metal. Znamená to, že jste „původem blackeři“? Ono jsou odkazy na tenhle styl slyšet i na deskách GAROTED. Je nějaký rozdíl, když píšete novou hudbu pro ostatní skupiny? Neplete se vám to? Jak vlastně vznikají nové songy (pro GAROTED)? Necháš nás prosím nahlédnout do vaší kuchyně?

Nolan Weber: Drew má black metal radši než já, haha. V black metalových kapelách hraju už od puberty a zdá se, že to byla vždycky součást mého života. Díky psaní poznámek a nahrávání demáčů je to méně matoucí. Garoted je naše zběsilá sračka, black metal je prostě úplně jiný odvaz. Jasně, něco z toho může prosakovat do zvuku Garoted, ale nikdy bychom nenapsali úplně black metalovou skladbu, protože pro tuhle kapelu potřebujeme víc zuřivosti!


Mě vždycky zajímá pohled muzikantů na scénu, na koncerty, na fanoušky. Jak si momentálně stojí death metal u vás v Americe? Jste z Kansas City (původně ale z Nebrasky, jestli se nepletu?). Jaká je scéna u vás, chodí lidé na koncerty? Kupují merch, nosiče?

Drew Frerking: Ano, jsme původně nebraská kapela. Náš domovský region je vzdálený necelé tři hodiny od Kansas City a protože pocházíme ze Středozápadu, jsme všichni tak trochu roztroušení a z malých měst. Pocházet z takové menší oblasti vede člověka k tomu, aby se snažil oslovit a hledal podobně smýšlející jedince. Tak jsme se víceméně ocitli v Kansas City. Zdejší scéna už tak nějak neexistuje. Pořád tu jsou kapely a tu a tam se konají koncerty, ale už nemáme žádné místo, kde bychom se mohli setkávat a hrát, jako tomu bylo v minulosti. Jsem si ale jistý, že se to v budoucnu změní, tyhle věci mají tendenci přicházet a odcházet v cyklech. Lidé, kteří chodí na koncerty, ale díky tomu velmi podporují místní i hostující kapely.


Jak přistupujete ke koncertům? Hrajete raději v klubech nebo na festivalech? A co nějaké turné? Já vím, je to dnes velmi drahá záležitost, ale jste pořád mladí a stále si myslím, že se takhle dostane i v době internetu vaše hudba k nejvíce posluchačům. Nechystáte nějaké tour na podporu nového alba?

Nolan Weber: Rádi hrajeme kdekoli, kde se dají spustit kopáky a kde se dá hrát šíleně rychle. Žádné turné zatím nechystáme, ale budeme, jen potřebujeme dát dokupy ještě pár věcí.

Poslední otázku bych rád směřoval k tvému vnímání muziky jako celku. Proč jste vlastně začali hrát? Co pro tebe znamená death metal? Je to životní styl, postoj ke společnosti nebo „jen“ koníček, bez kterého nemůžeš jako já být?

Nolan Weber: Chtěl jsem hrát rychlou, náročnou a zběsilou hudbu a Drew taky! Pro mě je to postoj k extrémní hudbě. Death metal je ten nejtěžší žánr na světě a myslím, že mu děláme čest. Spousta kapel mi prostě není po chuti, takže hraju death metal, který bych chtěl slyšet.

Občas navštívím místa, na kterých se mi otevřou staré rány. Hnisající vředy, znovu se objeví stigmata. Na opuštěných pohřebištích nebo ve starých katakombách, všude, kde se zabíjelo a obětovalo ve jménu Boha. Z mlhy vystoupí přízraky, duše mučených a zemřelých. Rozmlouvají se mnou, žalují. Bojím se jejich slov, pálí mě vnitřnosti. Nemám odpověď a tak mě roztrhají na kusy. Stanu se jedním z nich. Prokletým.

Prokletá je i hudba death metalových veteránů THORNAFIRE z Chile. Ti hrají postaru, poctivě. Mají prašivý zvuk a spoustu morbidních nápadů. Jejich letošní novinku "Leprosario lazareto" jsem si pouštěl zásadně ve tmě a na místech, na kterých se mi otevíraly staré rány. Tohle je záležitost pro všechny tmáře, rouhače a fanoušky obrácených křížů. 


Kapela datuje svůj vznik do roku 1998 a je znát, že se jedná o smečku, která přesně ví, co a jak chce hrát. Má svůj vlastní originální ksicht. Pánové se nebojí kombinovat ostré a nekompromisní riffy s chladnými melodiemi. Novinka je tak velmi pestrým albem. Jako bych se díval do nějakého děsivého kaleidoskopu. Jsou v něm jen samé odstíny černé barvy. Zvuk, obal, nápady, celková produkce, vše je v nejlepším pořádku. "Leprosario lazareto" jsem poslouchal zásadně po půlnoci. V těchto hodinách jsem si nejlépe vychutnal jednotlivé pasáže. Kapela se volně inspiruje starým klasickým death metalem a přidává i black metalovou atmosféru. Vše je zahalené do zkažené krve. Líbí se mi, jakým způsobem Chilané hrají s náladami. Opravdu jsem během poslechu na starých pohřebištích, procházím se záhrobím a čerpám sílu ve smradlavých močálech. Pro mě je vždy nejdůležitější, jestli cítím z muziky sílu, takovou tu těžko popsatelnou energii. A musím rovnou dodat, že THORNAFIRE mě pokaždé přikovou na zeď. Pohřbí zaživa, znovu a znovu exhumují. Dělají to do té doby, dokud se nestanu také nemrtvým. Už dlouhé roky jsem neviděl světlo. Žiju jenom ve tmě a s oblibou navštěvuji místa, na kterých mi pokaždé popraskají vředy. Schválně jsem poslouchal celou diskografii této skupiny a mohu vám její tvorbu jenom doporučit. Smrt je velmi blízko! Rouhání, antikřesťanství, temný a zahnívající death metal! Inferno!

Cursed is the music of death metal veterans THORNAFIRE from Chile. They play the old way, the honest way. They have a dusty sound and a lot of morbid ideas. I played their new release "Leprosario lazareto" this year mainly in the dark and in places where old wounds were opening up. This is an affair for all darkies, blasphemers and fans of inverted crosses.


The band dates back to 1998 and it is clear that they are a pack that knows exactly what and how they want to play. It has its own original face. The gentlemen are not afraid to combine sharp and uncompromising riffs with cool melodies. The new album is a very varied one. It's like looking into some kind of scary kaleidoscope. It's all shades of black. The sound, the artwork, the ideas, the overall production, everything is top notch. I listened to "Leprosario lazareto" principally after midnight. It was at these hours that I enjoyed the individual passages best. The band freely takes inspiration from old classic death metal and adds a black metal atmosphere. Everything is wrapped in wicked blood. I like the way the Chileans play with moods. I really am in old burial grounds while listening, walking through the afterlife and drawing strength in the stinking swamps. For me, the most important thing is always if I feel the power from the music, that hard to describe energy. And I have to add right away that THORNAFIRE drives me up the wall every time. Buried alive, exhumed again and again. They do it until I become undead too. I haven't seen the light in years. I live only in darkness, and I like to visit the places where my boils always burst. I have listened to the entire discography of this band on purpose and can only recommend their work. Death is very close! Blasphemy, anti-Christianity, dark and rotting death metal! Inferno!

Kýváš se do rytmu a přemýšlíš, jestli si na něco nezapomněl. Další temná noc, další hrob. Poslední dobou umírá čím dál tím víc lidí. Vypadá to, že se vrátila jedna stará choroba. Ulicemi se potácejí nemrtví a vzduchem se vznáší pach smrti. Upravíš si sluchátka na své hlavě, protože bez hudby už dávno nemůžeš pracovat. Jsi starý hrobník, starý posluchač death metalu. Muzika je pro tebe drogou, šílenstvím i odpočinkem.

Dnešní noc si zvolil EP "Blood" od německých maniaků FINAL PLAGUE. Ti se s tím moc nepářou, jdou rovnou na věc. Víka od rakví pukají a ty se zase jednou díváš na sever. Tvář ti bičují ostré riffy, pod kůži se zadírají morbidní melodie a útěchou je pouze děsivý vokál. Ano, jsem tu správně. Na staré death metalové seanci. 

Můj úkol zněl kdysi jasně a zřetelně. Budu vyhledávat a propagovat kapely, o kterých si myslím, že jsou dobré. Němci hrají postaru a ihned mě zaujali svým nasazením, zvukem, obalem i produkcí. Hlavní jsou pro mě (ostatně jako vždy) nápady a melodie. Celková atmosféra, která je v tomto případě velmi mrtvolná a náležitě temná a chladná. Pánové čerpali inspiraci převážně na severu Evropy. V jejich skladbách zaznívají ozvěny kapel jako DISMEMBER, GRAVE, ENTOMBED, případně BENEDICTION. Pro mě je také vždy velmi důležité, zda má hudba sílu a drive. A u "Blood" si připadám, že mě řeže velmi ostře a nekompromisně. Songy v sobě mají takovou tu pradávnou jiskru, kterou máme my, staří fanoušci tohoto stylu, tolik rádi. Nejedná se samozřejmě o nic nového, ani převratného, ale to mi nijak nevadí. V dnešní době absolutní originalita stejně neexistuje. Kývám se do rytmu a přemýšlím, jestli jsem na něco nezapomněl. Další temná noc, další hrob. Poslední dobou umírá čím dál tím víc lidí. Vypadá to, že se vrátila jedna stará choroba. Ano, pro to, abyste si tuhle nahrávku užili, doporučuji navštívit hřbitov za městem. Nejlépe v noci a mrazu. V těchto chvílích vynikne album nejvíce. Jsem moc rád, že jsem na svých toulkách podzemím tuhle smečku objevil. Pokud se rádi a často ohlížíte směrem zpět, neváhejte ani chvilku. Tohle EP hoří jasným plamenem. Nezbývá mi nic jiného, než vám "Blood" doporučit. Starý, prašivý death metal z čerstvě exhumovaných hrobů!

You sway to the beat, wondering if you forgot something. Another dark night, another grave. More and more people are dying these days. Looks like an old disease has returned. The undead roam the streets and the smell of death is in the air. You adjust the headphones on your head because you can't work without music anymore. You're an old undertaker, an old death metal listener. Music is your drug, your madness and your relaxation.

Tonight, you chose the EP "Blood" from German maniacs FINAL PLAGUE. They don't mess with it too much, they get straight to the point. The coffin lids are popping and you're looking north once again. Sharp riffs whip your face, morbid melodies dig under your skin and only the eerie vocals are a comfort. Yes, I'm right here. At an old death metal session.

My task was once clear and distinct. I will seek out and promote bands that I think are good. The Germans play old school and immediately impressed me with their commitment, sound, packaging and production. The main thing for me (as always) are the ideas and melodies. The overall atmosphere, which in this case is very deadpan and appropriately dark and cold. The gentlemen drew inspiration mostly from northern Europe. In their songs you can hear echoes of bands like DISMEMBER, GRAVE, ENTOMBED, or BENEDICTION. For me it is also always very important whether the music has power and drive. And with "Blood" I feel like it cuts me very sharply and uncompromisingly. The songs have that ancient sparkle that we old fans of this style love so much. It's nothing new or groundbreaking, of course, but that doesn't bother me in the least. Absolute originality doesn't exist these days anyway. I sway to the beat and wonder if I've forgotten something. Another dark night, another grave. More and more people are dying these days. Looks like an old disease has returned. Yes, to enjoy this recording, I recommend a visit to the cemetery outside of town. Preferably at night and in the cold. That's when the album stands out the most. I'm so glad I discovered this pack on my underground wanderings. If you like to look back often, don't hesitate a moment. This EP is burning bright. I have no choice but to recommend "Blood" to you. Old, dusty death metal from freshly exhumed graves!

A few questions - interview with death metal band from Germany - FINAL PLAGUE.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

'Final Plague' is a Death Metal band from Bremen (Germany). We started with a jamming session by Andreas, Olli and Thoddy in late 2019 to try out new ideas and figure out whether this will be a match. We soon figured out: it is! It took us some time during the CoViD years, but eventually Chris and Till joined and we started to create our own sound.

Our music is dedicated to Old School Death Metal (OSDM) in the style of early 90ies Swedish bands like Entombed, Dismember, Grave, and similar. It is actually a time that we have all experienced and that has really shaped us. We enrich the typical Swedish style by including modern and groovy elements from time to time, while the basis is a sick HM-2 guitar tone combined with fast blast beats, growls and screams.

The current five person lineup was completed in the beginning of 2022. 'Final Plague' is: Oliver Wittrock (Drums), Chris Voltermann (Vocals), Andreas Walde (Bass), Thorsten Krebs (Guitar) and Till Schleicher (Guitar)


Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

Our EP ‚Blood‘ is completely self-produced. We wired up the rehearsal room, recorded everything and mixed it. This is not new territory for Till Schleicher - he has recorded and mixed albums for many bands in the past.

One of the most important aspects of recording to us is that our music sounds the same on the album and on stage – we think there are only few things worse than having a good mix but not being able to perform live afterwards.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

Just like the recording and mixing, we created the CD ourselves and ordered a first batch of 250 copies at a company that did the pressing for us. We currently sell the CD by ourselves – people interested can just send an email to info@finbalplague.de and we will be happy to ship a copy.

At this point in time we did not create any vinyl or cassettes. But our music is available online in every will-known streaming service and store, like Spotify, YouTube, Amazon or Apple, of course.


Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

All of our songs are the output of some sort of group work. Despite the fact that this differs from song to song, a typical approach is that we start with one or bunch of cool guitar riffs and think about how they can be compiled to a song. Then we try different things, it takes a couple of weeks, and at some point we decide that the song is „ready“. Then we think about topics and write the lyrics afterwards. So it difficult to name just one author.

Our lyrics deal with different, but mostly current topics. ‚Sunshine Unit‘ for example is about how humanity is destroying our planet. By the way, sunshine unit is a unit used to measure the amount of radioactivity – and as such a euphemism that enables us humans to talk about bad things without feeling too bad. It is this irony that we try to enhance. ‚Halo Defect‘ is about media misusage and how easy it is to influence followers. Then we have lyrics about the power of sects, people that do not fit into society, and so on.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The logo was designed by Markus Vesper. We needed and wanted external help with that. The rest of our appearance is DIY. The background images as well as single and album covers are created using generative AI, which works really well for us. We used the same technology for the videos we released for our first singles on YouTube.

We have a few social media accounts, like Instagram and Facebook plus the artist accounts on Spotify, Amazon, Apple, YouTube, and so on. We manage those social media accounts ourselves. Chris is looking after Instagram and Facebook. Thorsten takes care of YouTube, Spotify, Apple and Amazon. We consider these things really important, because it is the touchpoints for potential fans! They need to see who we are and what we are like.


Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

Altogether we could create a really long list of artists we like to hear, follow and go to their concerts. A few of the most important bands from the Death Metal genre are Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Edge of Sanity, Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel or Evocation.

Inspiration is an interesting topic! Because one cannot not listen – meaning you will always be influenced by what you hear. And you will eventually create riffs that are somewhat similar to bands you like and listen to. This is why we deem it really important to finalize our songs altogether. When all five of us are in line with what we create, then different influences are mixed. I think is how our own personal note has emerged.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

We recently had our fist gig, just two weeks after the release of ‘Blood’. It was planned this way. We actually first decided when to play the first gig and then looked backwards to have release dates for the EP and further back for a few singles.

Everything seems to have worked really well – on June 17th we played live at the “Zollkantine” in Bremen, together with ‘Machinefeeder’ (also from Bremen) and ‘Terrible Sickness’ (from Nienburg). It was amazing that the audience already knew our songs. That was great fun!

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

We want to create the best Swedish Death Metal outside of Sweden! *laughing*

No, honestly, we do not have a rockstar career plan. We started this whole thing for the fun of it. And that is how we will continue. We already have a couple of new songs ready and are working on more. There will be a second release probably within the next 6 to 12 months.

Vidíš před sebou rezavý nůž, který ti pomalu zajíždí do vnitřností. Cítíš obrovskou bolest. Tlak v tvé hlavě dává na vědomí, že už to nebude dlouho trvat a přejdeš na druhou stranu. Pohlédneš do jeho tváře. Tvůj vlastní vrah. Usmíváš se. Kdysi sis představoval, že budeš starý a odejdeš ve spánku. Jenže svět není spravedlivý. Pomalu padáš na studenou zem. Tvoje duše je spálená na popel. Pak se probudíš a zjistíš, že realita je ještě krutější, ošklivější a šílenější.

STATIC ABYSS, kapela dvou členů AUTOPSY (Chris Reifert, Greg Wilkinson), přichází se svým druhým dlouhohrajícím albem. Opět se jedná o velmi morbidní doom death metalovou záležitost. Pokud vnímáte hudbu jako já, myslím si, že také chvílemi nebudete při poslechu vědět, co je děsivá noční můra a co současný podivný svět. Jedná se o hudbu z nekonečných močálů věčnosti. 


Letos jakoby pánové znovu vystoupili z krvavé mlhy a přinesli nám pestrou porci zahnívajících melodií ze záhrobí. Minulou desku "Labyrinth of Veins" jsem velmi chválil a musím i tu letošní. Pokud máte rádi zvuk AUTOPSY, ABSCESS a dalších podobných skupin, neváhejte ani chvilku. Dostanete velmi jedovatý koktejl. Bude vás mrazit v zádech. Skladby z "Aborted from Reality" by klidně mohly být soundtrackem k nějakému starému hororovému filmu. Všichni, co posloucháme starý death metal a máme rádi doomové nálady, určitě tak trošku věříme v existenci temných sil, přízraků i démonů. Při téhle desce všichni ožívají a kývají se do rytmu. Novinka je záhadná, magická, strašidelná, chladná i velmi podmanivá. Alespoň tak desku vnímám já. Platí tu zde více než u jiných, lepší je poslouchat, v klidu a uprostřed noci. Na starých hřbitovech, v pitevnách i katakombách. Ano, na těchto místech a situacích vyniknou jednotlivé nuance nejlépe. Jedná se o záležitost pro všechny tmáře, staré hrobníky i padlé kněze. STATIC ABYSS letos napsali hudbu, které je pro mě rezavým nožem, zabodnutým hluboko do břicha. Dávám si do hlavy album stále dokola a pomalu se sám stávám svým vlastním stínem. Pochmurné nálady, zvláštní melancholická atmosféra, rakev pomalu zajíždějící do země. Napadá mě velká spousta do šedé a černé zabarvených obrazů. Když si "Aborted from Reality" pouštím, odehrávají se kolem mě různě hrozivé scény. Pro mě je to důkaz, že se nahrávka opravdu povedla. Pánové mají svůj typický, velmi originální rukopis, který je nezaměnitelný. Za mě osobně se jedná o další skvělý počin z jejich dílny. Možná se jednou rozpadnu v prach a rozplynu se ve smradlavých močálech, ale tuhle desku budu poslouchat stále dál. Hrůzostrašné, děsivé doom death metalové obrazy z morbidní hororové galerie smrti!

You look into his face. Your own killer. You smile. You once imagined you'd be old and pass away in your sleep. But the world isn't fair. Slowly you fall to the cold ground. Your soul is burnt to ashes. Then you wake up to find that reality is even crueler, uglier and crazier.

STATIC ABYSS, the band of two AUTOPSY members (Chris Reifert, Greg Wilkinson), comes with their second full-length album. Once again it is a very morbid doom death metal affair. If you feel about music like I do, I think that also at times you won't know what's a scary nightmare and what's a contemporary weird world when you listen to it. This is music from the endless swamps of eternity.



This year, it's as if the gentlemen have once again stepped out of the bloody fog and brought us a varied portion of rotting melodies from beyond the grave. I highly praised the last album "Labyrinth of Veins" and I have to give this one too. If you like the sound of AUTOPSY, ABSCESS and other similar bands, don't hesitate a moment. You will get a very poisonous cocktail. It will send chills down your spine. The tracks from "Aborted from Reality" could easily be the soundtrack to an old horror movie. All of us, who listen to old death metal and like doom moods, definitely believe a little bit in the existence of dark forces, ghosts and demons. With this record, they all come alive and sway to the beat. The new album is mysterious, magical, haunting, cold and very captivating. At least that's how I perceive the record. More valid here than with others, better to listen to, quietly and in the middle of the night. In old cemeteries, in autopsy rooms and catacombs. Yes, these are the places and situations where the nuances stand out the best. This is a matter for all the darkies, old gravediggers and fallen priests. STATIC ABYSS have written music this year that is a rusty knife stuck deep in my gut. I put the album over and over in my head and slowly become my own shadow. Gloomy moods, a strange melancholic atmosphere, a coffin slowly descending into the ground. A lot of grey and black images come to mind. When I listen to "Aborted from Reality", all kinds of horrible scenes play out around me. For me, it's proof that the record is really good. The gentlemen have their typical, very original handwriting, which is unmistakable. For me personally, this is another great work from them. Maybe one day I'll crumble into dust and dissolve into stinking swamps, but I'll keep listening to this record. Creepy, horrifying doom death metal images from the morbid horror gallery of death!
