Interview - PURGATORIAL - A misty and dark black death metal ritual!


Interview with black death metal band from United Kingdom - PURGATORIAL.

Ave PURGATORIAL! I'm listening to your new release "Fading Whispers of Voidbound Souls" right now and I'm thinking that this is what the music they will play at the end of the world will sound like. I think you've done a really masterful job. What are your feelings about the new album? Have you gotten any feedback from fans yet? Have you played the new songs live yet? And how do they work?

Thank you so much for your kind words. It’s great to hear you think it sounds like the end of the world, because that’s exactly what I was going for! I’m quite proud of this album, it is the first collection of music I have produced myself and professionally released so to hear people enjoying it really means a lot to me. Plenty of friends and fans have expressed their liking to it and it leaves me speechless each time. I wasn't expecting many people to get in touch and tell me that. I don’t have people to play these songs with live for the moment, but I have played along to them with my friends Ryan and James in a practice room before. I have ideas for potential live shows, but I am just keeping them secret for now. I’m not sure if/when they’ll be.

How do you actually create new songs for PURGATORIAL? Are you a traditional band that locks yourself in a rehearsal room and composes there or do you use the internet, which is so popular nowadays, and email ideas to each other? I'm interested in the creative process itself.

I’m a little bit precious with music. I write all the music myself and then hire my friend Neil to help out with the drums. Neil does amazing work with Blackbraid and as soon as I heard that band I just knew I had to work with him. He’s also an amazing guy and we get on really well. If we lived closer this would definitely be a 2-man project officially. I’ve tried doing things the traditional band way but it never works out. It probably makes me look like I have a huge ego but I definitely don’t, I just know what I want.


Lyrics are a separate chapter in PURGATORIAL. What are they about on the new album and where did you get the inspiration for them? On "Fading Whispers of Voidbound Souls" they fit the music perfectly. What came first, the music or the lyrics?

The lyrics are mostly me venting my frustration at the things going on in the world. I think some of them are obvious and some of them are not. I have a lot of anger and sadness surrounding the wars currently going on and I blame our political leaders entirely for allowing it all. A few of the songs have personal themes though. For example, “Pelagic” touches on how uneasy open water makes me. Even just watching it on a screen makes me feel anxious and panicked. I put myself through hell a little when I was gathering the whale click samples at the end of that song - I had to watch videos of sperm whales approaching divers to understand what it would sound like and it made me pretty uncomfortable the whole time.

I have to admit that the cover for "Fading Whispers of Voidbound Souls" is excellent - it fits the music perfectly! It's mysterious, mysterious, sad. How did you choose the cover and why did you choose Tryfar? Did you hear new songs beforehand for inspiration?

I have to give most of the credit for this to Mauro who runs These Hands Melt and Tryfar who regularly works with the label, as he did a brilliant job of the CD layout. I originally had a cool bit of artwork made up by somebody else, but it just didn’t feel right when I tried to use it as album art. I’ve archived it for now and plan to use it for merch instead, but this also made me unsure of what direction to go in for the front cover. Mauro reminded me of the cover for the final Altar of Plagues album and he was spot on with that idea. I did a lot of digging online and eventually found the perfect photo. It was taken by photographer Reynaldo Yodia, who is now a great friend of mine, along with his wife Tessa who is the model in the picture. I chose this picture because it fits the vibe I had set. It has a mysterious aura to it and also a bit of sadness, like you mentioned. It’s perfect and I’m glad I came across it.


The sound of the whole record is great. It's dark, cold and sharp at the same time. What studio did you record the album in? Did you as a band have a say in the final sound, the mastering?

You might be a little surprised to hear this, but it was all recorded in my study at home. Neil made the drums up at his place and did the mastering afterwards, but I mixed the whole thing on Reaper on my laptop. Very much a DIY album, just like Darkthrone did in the old days, except with a more modern approach. Even though it might sound a bit crude in some parts, I like it this way. I get full control over the sound and don’t have to argue with anyone about it. I think I will keep it like this for future releases too - it works very well for me and I saved a lot of money not having to hire out a studio. I have a newer, more powerful computer now too so the next album will definitely sound better!

The new album was released on Italian label These Hands Melt. Why did you choose this label and how satisfied are you with their work?

A few bands I know already used These Hands Melt for their releases so they came highly recommended. I like the aesthetic of their products and the fact that there are no elitist or sketchy ties - it’s just great music by great people. I didn’t honestly expect Mauro to be interested in Purgatorial as it’s a fair bit heavier than his usual roster, but my friend Lucia does graphic work for them and said I should show him. I did exactly that and here we are! They’re a great label - I’m impressed and appreciative of everything they’ve done. The release wouldn’t have been the same without their help.

The history of the band is not very long. How did the idea of playing death metal come about? Who was your role model? Please reminisce for us! If I'm not mistaken, PURGATORIAL was originally Kris Mayers' project. It was only after that that the others joined. Or am I wrong?

You’re right that Purgatorial is formed by me (Kris) but I’ve probably caused some confusion with the other members. Originally I was going to build up to 5 members (including myself) but it just hasn’t worked out this time around unfortunately. For now it’s going to be a solo project where I hire in help with drums and any other instrumentals I want but I’m too rubbish to perform. I have another project that I run called Eowa which focuses on a much more black metal sound but I was beginning to write songs that sounded a lot more in line with death metal, so I decided to keep them seperate. Eowa is going through a bit of a reset at the moment as I wasn’t fully satisfied with the album I released, so to clear my head a bit I formed Purgatorial to see if releasing these detuned death metal songs under a new name was worthwhile. It seems like it was a good idea, because now I have 2 extreme metal bands that I enjoy writing for in two seperate styles. My main role model is Gojira. Most of my guitar work is heavily inspired by Joe’s riffs. Purgatorial is not quite as progressive as them but I might get there one day. Other metal bands that helped me shape my sound includes Blood Incantation, Ulcerate, Knoll, Altarage, The Black Dahlia Murder, Abduction (UK) and Portal. I’m also a huge fan of Sleep Token and Nine Inch Nails - I’d love to get some elements like that into my music someday. Just maybe not the clean singing. Not yet anyway.


It's very obvious in your band how much you enjoy your music. Do you have a goal that you want to achieve? For some people it's a famous label, others want to play a big festival.

I think the ultimate goal for Purgatorial is to get as many people listening and work towards becoming a proper live act some day. I don’t know if that will ever happen, but if I keep trying then maybe it will. I’d love to be able to bypass the use of major labels too and have a big enough following to be more self-sufficient. When bands move to the bigger labels I find the quality of their music tends takes a dive eventually, and the focus on very average looking merch becomes their main priority. I really don’t want that - I think fans deserve better if they are sinking their hard-earned cash into something.

What's it like playing death metal in the UK? Do people come to your gigs? Do they support you, do they buy CDs? If you do an event, how many people come?

So far a few people that are local to me have expressed enthusiasm and are keen for me to get playing live. I’ve also sold a good amount of CDs from my batch of personal copies so it feels like the UK definitely has a liking towards death metal. I will be honest though, I am not very clued up on the underground death metal scene here. My previous focus was on the black metal scene, so I really need to do my homework…

Death/black metal is a tough hobby and an even tougher lifestyle. What does it mean to you? What do you enjoy most about it and how do you perceive it? How did you get into it?

Again, I’m probably going to surprise you a bit here - I love making and listen to black metal and death metal for sure, but I don’t really consider myself a “true” metal head in that respect. I’m not a fan of corpse paint, bullet belts, battle jackets and all of that jazz. It works for some people but it’s just not for me. I’ve been into heavy music since I was 14 and I started out with Lamb of God. Shortly after that I became obsessed with Slipknot for many years and they probably shaped my music taste the most. Joey Jordison made me love blast beats and fast drumming and I think that is why I ended up making the music that I do now. That combined with Paul Gray and Jim Root’s powerful but simple riffs. I was able to play along to their music in my early days of guitar since they weren’t overly technical. Because of Slipknot I discovered the likes of Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Death and Mayhem which opened up a whole new can of worms. I’ve been enjoying a lot of different stuff recently though, just so extreme metal doesn’t burn me out.

I deliberately ask this question to all the bands so they can do a bit of promotion for the future. Please tell us what PURGATORIAL are planning in the near future? What can we look forward to?

To put it bluntly, more music! I don’t want to give away too much just in case I change my mind on how I want to do things but you can definitely expect new music in 2025. There might even be a cover or two that are close to completion. Who knows?

Ave PURGATORIAL! Právě poslouchám vaši novinku „Fading Whispers of Voidbound Souls“ a říkám si, že takhle nějak bude znít hudba, kterou budou hrát při konci světa. Myslím, že se vám povedl opravdu mistrovský kousek. Jaké jsou tvoje pocity z novinky? Máš už nějaké zpětné vazby od fanoušků? Hráli jste už nové skladby naživo? A jak fungují?

Děkuji vám za vaše milá slova. Je skvělé slyšet, že to zní jako konec světa, protože přesně o to mi šlo! Jsem na to album docela hrdý, je to první kolekce hudby, kterou jsem sám produkoval a profesionálně vydal, takže slyšet, že se lidem líbí, pro mě opravdu hodně znamená. Spousta přátel a fanoušků mi vyjádřila, že se jim líbí, a pokaždé mě to nechává beze slov. Nečekal jsem, že se mi ozve tolik lidí a řeknou mi to. Momentálně nemám lidi, se kterými bych ty písničky mohl hrát naživo, ale už jsem je hrál s kamarády Ryanem a Jamesem ve zkušebně. Mám nápady na případná živá vystoupení, ale zatím je držím v tajnosti. Nejsem si jistý, jestli/kdy budou.

Jak vlastně vznikají nové skladby pro PURGATORIAL? Jste tradiční kapelou, která se zavře do zkušebny a tam skládá nebo využíváte v dnešní době tolik oblíbený internet a posíláte si nápady emailem? Zajímá mě samotný tvůrčí proces.

Na hudbu jsem trochu precizní. Veškerou hudbu si píšu sám a pak si najímám kamaráda Neila, aby mi pomohl s bicími. Neil dělá úžasnou práci s Blackbraid a jakmile jsem tu kapelu slyšel, prostě jsem věděl, že s ním musím pracovat. Je to taky úžasný člověk a vycházíme spolu opravdu dobře. Kdybychom bydleli blíž, určitě by to byl oficiálně dvoučlenný projekt. Zkoušel jsem dělat věci tradičním kapelním způsobem, ale nikdy to nevyšlo. Asi to vypadá, že mám obrovské ego, ale tak to rozhodně není, jen vím, co chci.


Samostatnou kapitolou jsou u PURGATORIAL texty. O čem pojednávají na novém albu a kde jsi pro ně bral inspiraci? Na „Fading Whispers of Voidbound Souls“ perfektně sedí k muzice. Co bylo dřív, muzika nebo texty?

V textech většinou vyjadřuji svou frustraci z toho, co se děje ve světě. Myslím, že některé z nich jsou zřejmé a některé ne. Jsem hodně vzteklý a smutný z válek, které v současnosti probíhají, a zcela viním naše politické vůdce, že to všechno umožňují. Několik písní má však osobní témata. Například „Pelagic“ se dotýká toho, jak mě znepokojuje otevřená voda. Dokonce i pouhý pohled na ni na obrazovce ve mně vyvolává úzkost a paniku. Trochu jsem si prošel peklem, když jsem na konci té písně sbíral ukázky velrybího klikání - musel jsem se dívat na videa, na kterých se vorvani blíží k potápěčům, abych pochopil, jak to bude znít, a celou dobu mi to bylo dost nepříjemné.

Musím se přiznat, že cover pro „Fading Whispers of Voidbound Souls“ je vynikající – sedne perfektně k hudbě! Je záhadný, tajemný, smutný. Jak jste obal vybírali a proč jste zvolili zrovna Tryfar? Slyšel třeba dopředu nové skladby pro inspiraci?

Největší zásluhu na tom má Mauro, který vede These Hands Melt, a Tryfar, který s vydavatelstvím pravidelně spolupracuje, protože se skvěle postaral o grafickou úpravu CD. Původně jsem si nechal od někoho vytvořit skvělý obal, ale když jsem se ho snažil použít jako obal alba, nepřipadal mi správný. Prozatím jsem ho archivoval a plánuju ho místo toho použít na merch, ale díky tomu jsem si také nebyl jistý, jakým směrem se vydat při tvorbě předního obalu. Mauro mi připomněl obal posledního alba Altar of Plagues a s tím nápadem byl na místě. Hodně jsem pátral na internetu a nakonec jsem našel perfektní fotku. Pořídil ji fotograf Reynaldo Yodia, který je nyní mým velkým přítelem, spolu se svou ženou Tessou, která je na obrázku modelkou. Vybral jsem tuto fotografii, protože odpovídá atmosféře, kterou jsem si stanovil. Má tajemnou auru a také trochu smutku, jak jste zmínil. Je dokonalá a jsem rád, že jsem na ni narazil.


Skvělý je zvuk celé nahrávky. Je temný, studený a ostrý zároveň. V jakém studiu jste album nahrávali? Mluvili jste jako kapela do výsledného zvuku, masteringu?

Možná vás to trochu překvapí, ale vše bylo nahráno v mé domácí pracovně. Neil si u sebe doma vyrobil bicí a následně provedl mastering, ale já jsem to celé smíchal v Reaperu na svém laptopu. Do značné míry DIY album, stejně jako to dělali Darkthrone za starých časů, jen s modernějším přístupem. I když to v některých částech může znít trochu syrově, mně se to takhle líbí. Mám plnou kontrolu nad zvukem a nemusím se kvůli tomu s nikým dohadovat. Myslím, že to tak nechám i pro budoucí vydání - funguje mi to velmi dobře a ušetřil jsem spoustu peněz, když jsem si nemusel najímat studio. Mám teď také novější, výkonnější počítač, takže příští album bude znít určitě lépe!

Nové album vyšlo u italských These Hands Melt. Proč jste si vybrali právě tento label a jak jste s jeho prací spokojeni?

Několik kapel, které znám, už These Hands Melt použilo pro svá vydání, takže mi je vřele doporučili. Líbí se mi estetika jejich produktů a to, že v nich nejsou žádné elitářské nebo skečové vazby - je to prostě skvělá hudba od skvělých lidí. Upřímně jsem nečekal, že by Mauro měl o Purgatorial zájem, protože je to o dost těžší než jeho obvyklý seznam, ale moje kamarádka Lucia pro ně dělá grafiku a řekla, že bych mu to měl ukázat. Přesně to jsem udělal a je to tady! Je to skvělý label - jsem ohromen a vážím si všeho, co udělali. Bez jejich pomoci by vydání nebylo takové, jaké bylo.

Historie kapely není příliš dlouhá. Jak vůbec vznikl nápad, hrát death metal? Kdo byl vaším vzorem? Zavzpomínej pro nás prosím! Jestli se nepletu, tak PURGATORIAL byl původně projekt Krise Mayerse. Teprve potom se přidali ostatní. Nebo se pletu?

Máš pravdu, že Purgatorial jsem založil já (Kris), ale asi jsem způsobil zmatek u ostatních členů. Původně jsem chtěl vytvořit skupinu do 5 členů (včetně mě), ale tentokrát to bohužel nevyšlo. Zatím to bude sólový projekt, kde si najímám výpomoc s bicími a dalšími nástroji, které bych chtěl, ale na které nejsem moc dobrý. Mám ještě jeden projekt, který vedu, jmenuje se Eowa a je zaměřený na mnohem blackmetalovější zvuk, ale začínal jsem psát písně, které zněly mnohem víc v souladu s death metalem, takže jsem se rozhodl je oddělit. Eowa momentálně prochází tak trochu resetem, protože jsem nebyl úplně spokojený s vydaným albem, takže abych si trochu vyčistil hlavu, založil jsem Purgatorial, abych zjistil, jestli má cenu vydávat tyhle odladěné deathmetalové písně pod novým názvem. Zdá se, že to byl dobrý nápad, protože teď mám dvě extrémní metalové kapely, pro které mě baví psát ve dvou různých stylech. Mým hlavním vzorem je Gojira. Většina mé kytarové práce je silně inspirována Joeovými riffy. Purgatorial nejsou tak progresivní jako oni, ale třeba se k tomu jednou dostanu. Mezi další metalové kapely, které mi pomohly formovat můj zvuk, patří Blood Incantation, Ulcerate, Knoll, Altarage, The Black Dahlia Murder, Abduction (UK) a Portal. Jsem také velkým fanouškem Sleep Token a Nine Inch Nails - rád bych jednou do své hudby dostal nějaké podobné prvky. Jen možná ne ten čistý zpěv. Každopádně zatím ne.


Na vaší kapele je hrozně vidět, jak vás vaše muzika baví. Máte nějaký cíl, kterého byste chtěli dosáhnout? Pro někoho to je slavné vydavatelství, jiný si chce třeba zahrát na velkém festivalu.

Myslím, že konečným cílem Purgatorial je dostat k poslechu co nejvíce lidí a pracovat na tom, aby se z nich jednoho dne stal pořádný koncertní projekt. Nevím, jestli se to někdy stane, ale když se budu snažit, tak možná ano. Taky bych byl rád, kdyby se mi podařilo obejít využívání velkých vydavatelství a mít dostatečně velký okruh fanoušků, abych byl soběstačnější. Když kapely přejdou k větším vydavatelstvím, kvalita jejich hudby má podle mě nakonec tendenci klesat a hlavní prioritou se stává zaměření na velmi průměrně vypadající merch. To opravdu nechci - myslím, že fanoušci si zaslouží něco lepšího, pokud do něčeho investují své těžce vydělané peníze.

Jaké to vlastně je, hrát death metal ve Velké Británii? Chodí u vás lidi na koncerty? Podporují vás, kupují CD? Když třeba uspořádáte nějakou akci, kolik přijde lidí?

Několik lidí z mého okolí zatím projevilo nadšení a chtějí, abych začal hrát naživo. Také jsem prodal slušné množství CD z mé osobní várky, takže mám pocit, že Velká Británie má death metal rozhodně v oblibě. Budu ale upřímný, nejsem příliš zběhlý ve zdejší undergroundové deathmetalové scéně. Dříve jsem se věnoval blackmetalové scéně, takže si opravdu musím udělat domácí úkoly...

Death/black metal je náročný koníček a ještě těžší životní styl. Co znamená pro tebe? Co tě na něm nejvíc baví a jak jej vnímáš? Jak si se k němu vlastně dostal?

Opět vás asi trochu překvapím - rád tvořím a poslouchám black metal a death metal, ale za „pravého“ metalistu se v tomto ohledu nepovažuji. Nejsem fanouškem corpse paintingu, kulových pásů, bojových bund a všeho toho jazzu. Někomu to vyhovuje, ale pro mě to prostě není. Heavy hudba mě baví od čtrnácti let a začínal jsem s Lamb of God. Krátce nato jsem se stal na mnoho let posedlý Slipknot, kteří asi nejvíce formovali můj hudební vkus. Díky Joeymu Jordisonovi jsem si zamiloval blast beaty a rychlé bubnování, a proto jsem asi skončil u hudby, kterou dělám teď. V kombinaci s Paul Grayem a Jimem Rootem to byly silné, ale jednoduché riffy. V mých kytarových začátcích jsem byl schopen hrát spolu s nimi, protože nebyli přehnaně techničtí. Díky Slipknot jsem objevil Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Death a Mayhem, což mi otevřelo úplně nové obzory. V poslední době si ale užívám hodně různých věcí, jen aby mě extrémní metal nevypálil.

Tuhle otázku dávám záměrně všem kapelám, aby si udělali trošku propagaci do budoucna. Prozraď nám prosím, co chystají PURGATORIAL v nejbližší době? Na co se můžeme těšit?

Jednoduše řečeno, více hudby! Nechci prozrazovat příliš mnoho pro případ, že bych změnil názor na to, jak to chci dělat, ale v roce 2025 můžete rozhodně očekávat novou hudbu. Možná se objeví i jeden nebo dva obaly, které jsou blízko dokončení. Kdo ví?

MORTAL RITES - Death in Heaven, Life in Hell

Bylo nalezeno další zohavené tělo. Usekané ruce, vyrvané vnitřnosti. Příčina smrti byla ale zcela jiná. Udušení vlastní krví. Pitva nebyla příliš dlouhá, všem bylo jasné, o co jde. Lidé jsou poslední roky příliš zahledění do sebe. Doba nám diktuje dokonalost. Navenek krásní a usměvaví, uvnitř zkažení jako shnilé maso. Sedím tu zrovna v jedné staré kobce a naslouchám zvukům z podzemí. Utíkám sem pokaždé, když mi je těžko na duši, když mi připadá současný svět příliš divný. Dnes bych tu pro vás měl death thrashovou kapelu MORTAL RITES z Quebecu, která mě zaujala nejen svým přístupem.

Ano, jsou to melodie, celková atmosféra nového EP, které mě doslova přikovali k přehrávači. Riffy na mě ihned zapůsobily jako ostré hřeby, které mi kapela postupně zatlouká do hlavy. Ve skladbách lze vystopovat pradávnou sílu, takovou tu těžkou a mokvající energii, kterou mám na extrémním metalu tolik rád. Doporučuji poslouchat hodně nahlas. 


Dnešní doba je skvělá v tom, že se dostanete i k hudbě, která by před vámi jinak byla ukryta. Kdysi dávno, před mnoha lety, jsem si dal soukromý cíl, že podobné smečky jako jsou MORTAL RITES budu podporovat. Pánové se nechali, stejně jako já, ovlivnit legendami jako BOLT THROWER, DEATH, MORBID ANGEL, TESTAMENT. Veškeré tyto vlivy jsou promítnuty i do jejich tvorby. Nenechte se ale mýlit, rozhodně se nejedná o dnes tolik časté kopírování bez duše. Naopak, skladby hoří uvnitř, Kanaďané do vás ihned zaseknou svůj dráp a už vás nepustí. Alespoň takto vnímám jejich nové EP "Death in Heaven, Life in Hell" já, starý metalový pes. Jako vždycky musím zmínit jednu velmi důležitou věc - novinka se opravdu dobře poslouchá. Určitě znáte ty podivné stavy úzkosti, kterým se dnes nevyhne skoro nikdo. Osobně potřebuji hudbu ke svému životu, jako krev. MORTAL RITES mi sedli přesně do mého vkusu. Jedná se o desku, která je po okraj narvaná zajímavými momenty, je žhavá i dynamická zároveň, má parádní zvuk (Recorded, mixed and mastered by Christopher Payeur) i obal (Jean-Philippe Payeur). Zapomenout nesmím ani na texty (o náboženství, válkách, tyranii, i současné prohnilé společnosti), které dávají smysl a dodávají albu na ještě větší uvěřitelnosti. Ano, tohle je ryzí záležitost nejen pro všechny staré fanoušky poctivého metalu. Bylo nalezeno další zohavené tělo. Usekané ruce, vyrvané vnitřnosti. Příčina smrti byla ale zcela jiná. Today I would like to bring you a death thrash band from Quebec, MORTAL RITES, which has caught my attention not only because of its approach.

Yes, it's the melodies, the overall vibe of the new EP that literally had me glued to the player. The riffs immediately impressed me like sharp nails that the band is gradually hammering into my head. You can trace an ancient power in the songs, the kind of heavy and swamping energy that I love so much about extreme metal. I recommend listening very loudly. 


What's great about today is that you can access music that would otherwise be hidden from you. Once upon a time, many years ago, I made it a personal goal to support packs like MORTAL RITES. Gentlemen like me have been influenced by legends like BOLT THROWER, DEATH, MORBID ANGEL, TESTAMENT. All these influences are reflected in their work. Make no mistake though, this is definitely not the soulless copying so common today. On the contrary, the songs burn inside, the Canadians immediately sink their claw into you and won't let go. At least this is how I, an old metal dog, perceive their new EP "Death in Heaven, Life in Hell". As always, I have to mention one very important thing - the novelty is really good to listen to. I'm sure you know those strange states of anxiety that almost nobody can avoid nowadays. Personally, I need music for my life, like blood. MORTAL RITES fit my taste exactly. This is a record that is packed to the brim with interesting moments, it is hot and dynamic at the same time, it has a great sound (Recorded, mixed and mastered by Christopher Payeur) and cover (Jean-Philippe Payeur). I must not forget the lyrics (about religion, wars, tyranny, and the current rotten society), which make sense and make the album even more believable. Yes, this is a pure affair not only for all old fans of honest metal. Another mutilated body has been found. Hands chopped off, entrails ripped out. But the cause of death was quite different. Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.? 

 Hey, I’m Chris, our band is called Mortal Rites and we’re from the province of Quebec in Canada. The band was founded around the end of 2022, early 2023 and we play death metal with some thrash influences at times. We have released a new EP called ‘’Death In Heaven, Life In Hell’’ about two weeks ago, and we’re excited for people to hear it! As far as musical style goes, I would say we’re definitely closer to more old school death metal bands since we still play in a fairly high tuning (guitar term, usually reminiscent of older bands) and have a lot of thrash-influenced fast parts. I always say that early Death Metal is basically just faster and more aggressive Thrash Metal.


Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering? 

 Mortal Rites is a completely DIY operation, meaning that we have recorded the EP ourselves with the equipment we had at our disposal. I was in charge of engineering, mixing, mastering and overall production. Drums and vocals were recorded in our rehearsal spaces, and stringed instruments were recorded in my apartment. This EP was the first time that I put ‘’real effort’’ into trying to make a decent sounding production (with all real instruments, too) and I’m happy with the results given the circumstances. There’s always room for improvement and I look forward to recording with the band again to further improve my skills as an engineer.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)? 

300 physical copies were made (CD) through Iron, Blood & Death Corp, which is the label who’s releasing the EP in physical format and they can be purchased through their Bandcamp page. The digital format of the EP can also be found on the label’s Bandcamp page as well as ours.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with? 

 Jean-Philippe (rhythm guitar) wrote the lyrics on all the songs on the EP. You could interpret the lyrics in different ways, as there are a few metaphors that were used. At first glance, it seems like the lyrics are about the downfall of a kingdom after a long-fought battle but it’s also a way of speaking about more personal things for us like sickness, social movements and how things are not always the way they seem to be. All things that are up close and personal to us, written in a way that fits our music. At heart, we’re all nerds, so anything that’s either medieval or space/fantasy related was always cool to us.


Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important? 

Jean-Philippe (rhythm guitar) made all of the different pieces of artwork himself. Like mentioned previously, Mortal Rites tries to do everything 100% ourselves, and visuals are obviously a big part of it. Everything from the EP’s artwork, to merch designs and different banners and images for social media platforms were done by him, with cues from the rest of the band too. Similarly to the previous question, we’re all pretty nerdy in Mortal Rites, so you can see those themes in the visuals of the band like the cover arts for our demo and EP or our merch designs.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you? 

 Iron, Blood & Death Corp, out of Mexico, is releasing the EP in CD format (and has the digital format on their bandcamp website). We wanted to go with a label that released material from bands that we could see ourselves play with and Antonio was friendly right from the beginning. For such a small release as our EP is, we’re happy with how things are going with IBDC. Antonio has helped us with promoting our music, and we’re seeing decent traffic on streaming platforms and IBDC’s YouTube page.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

 ‘’Idolise’’ is a pretty strong word. Up until this EP, our music was written in a certain way and that has since changed for many reasons. A strong influence on Mortal Rites is definitely Morbid Angel, though depending on when you would ask, it’s not always the same albums that would be influential. When our band started, Altars Of Madness would probably have been the strongest influence, but the initial goal was always to get closer to Domination, which is pretty much a perfect album. Moving forward, we’re taking inspiration from bands and albums that are slightly heavier and more intense. The last two Cannibal Corpse albums and most of Hate Eternal’s discography are now key influences to Mortal Rites.


Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response? 

We have sent the record to a few labels, but EP’s are usually not super popular with labels because of a few factors, especially if said label releases material on vinyl. We have received good comments on the material itself, and some great pieces of advice from some labels going forward, which are always appreciated.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best? 

We only played a handful of gigs in 2024 because we were focused on finishing the writing and recording of our EP, and they were all in clubs. One of the very cool gigs that we’ve done this year was supporting 200 Stab Wounds during one of their latest tours when they stopped in our area. We’re definitely looking forward to playing more and in more places in 2025.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band? 

One of the main plans is to gig more, and in more places. We all have very busy schedules, but we’re trying to make more time available for gigs. Writing and recording new material is always in the plans as well, especially since the musical direction of the band is perfectly clear and established now. We’ll probably tease some new material at some point during 2025 that showcases what our true sound is, and that’s something to look forward to, for sure!

Sedím doma, je druhý svátek vánoční. Už jsem si utřídil knihy, které jsem dostal pod stromeček. Mám radost, je jich opravdu hromada. Cítím v kostech takovou tu pohodu, která mě pokaždé na konci roku obejme. Klid, ano všude kolem je klid. Celý rok jsem četl spíše různé thrillery, kriminálky, příběhy o sériových vrazích, o temnotě. Napětí střídalo napětí, vydával jsem se na dlouhé výlety do pokřivených myslí. Sledoval jsem vraždy, které se staly před dlouhými roky, aby znovu vyplavaly na povrch. Každý pátek jsem vydával jeden tip, byl jsem pečlivý a sledoval novinky, protože znáte to, člověk už skoro všechno četl a jeho oblíbení autoři stále píšou. Byl jsem rád u toho, když jsem netrpělivě očekával SMS zprávu o uložení v boxu u našeho domu. Rozbaloval jsem a čichal vůni čerstvých knih. Když už mám to volno, co takhle něco jiného, trošku si zavzpomínat do své mládí, když jsem čítával převážně sci-fi?

Jdu ke knihovně, mumlám si nahlas, co jsem četl, na co mám chuť, na co ne, když můj pohled spočinul na knížce, kterou jsem si jen tak zakoupil podle tématu, kterým se zaobírá. Nevěděl jsem dopředu vůbec nic, ale Illuminae mě zaujalo. Sedl jsem si tedy zase do svého křesla a nechal příběh, aby mě vtáhl do děje. Stalo se to snad ihned, během několika stránek. Píše se rok 2575 a právě bojujeme o přežití. Ostatně jako vždycky. V téhle knize je všechno. Akce, divoké vize z budoucnosti, vtip i romantika. Muselo to dát hroznou práci, oceňuji pečlivost, protože je knížka napsána formou chatu, jsou v ní odkazy na emaily, různé dokumenty. Jedná se přesně o takový ten druh propracovaného sci-fi, u kterého nezvítězila forma nad obsahem. Naopak, je to velmi čtivé, zajímavé, neotřelé. Přesně, jak má tenhle styl být. 

Jak už jsem zmiňoval výše, čtu poslední roky převážně thrillery, nebojím se ani hororů, ale u téhle knihy mě mrazilo v kostech. Schválně jsem nechal svoji dceru, aby také ochutnala a oba jsme si potom říkali, jak je to skvělý příběh. Znáte to, kolem znějí pohádky (které nemusím), na stole je cukroví, stromek voní a venku je sychravo. Jenže vy nejdete na půlnoční mši, vy si raději otevřete pár stránek a pod lampičkou létáte vesmírem. Vždycky jsem měl rád silné příběhy, které dokázaly rozdrásat moji fantazii. Illuminae je vynikající dílo. Kdybych býval byl literárním kritikem, hodnotil bych také velmi vysoko. Nejsem, ale i jako prostý čtenář a fanoušek nemůžu jinak, než zaklapnout poslední stránku, otevřít pusu dokořán a pronést do ticha - kurva, do prdele, to byla ale jízda. Venku je tma a jsou vidět hvězdy. Co bude za pár let? Kam se jako lidstvo posuneme? Vyhlídky nejsou moc optimistické. Ale to ostatně nebyly nikdy. 

Obyvatele, ostatně jako vždycky, nikdo před útokem nevaroval. Unikli jenom čistou náhodou. Hlavní postavy jsou velmi propracované, na to já hodně dám. Kniha musí mít duši, musí bolet i pohladit. Po celé planetě se šíří zmutovaná pandemie. Joj, tak s tímhle si na nás nepřijdete, s tím už máme zkušenosti. Nebo ne? Korporátní těžební kolonie mi připomíná naší firmu, úniková flotila zase staré dobré časy, když jsem ještě jako mladý snil, že poletím do vesmíru. Inu naivita mládí, nečekal jsem, že budou lidé i nadále tak hloupí a budou se zaobírat takovými zbytečnostmi, jako jsou války nebo nedej bože sledování krátkých debilních videí. Ale to odbočuji, to byl jen takový vtípek čerstvě padesátiletého muže, který oceňuje u knížek, stejně jako u hudby, opravdovost, silné motivy a talent. Illuminae po vás bude vyžadovat soustředění a plnou pozornost. Když je budete mít, budete po zásluze odměněni silným zážitkem. 

Když si to vezmu kolem a kolem, tak toho člověk k životu příliš nepotřebuje. Stačí dobrá práce, zdraví a pohodové vztahy v rodině. Zbytku můžete ukázat klidně prostředníček. I v roce 2025 budu pokračovat ve své nesmělé misi. Budu podporovat knihy, o kterých si myslím, že stojí za přečtení, stejně jako muziku, která je mému srdci vlastní. Pokud to máte také tak, potom vám moc děkuji a přeji vám, abyste i letos měli dobré světlo a klid v duši. A když budete zdraví, tak to také neuškodí, co říkáte? Přeji vám jen vše dobré a opravdu moc děkuji za další rok, co jste mi byli věrní. Ani nevíte jak si toho vážím. Pokud jsi žena, posílám polibek na tvář a pokud muž, tak připíjím na zdraví! Držte se!

Říká se, že nejhorší je bolest, která je uvnitř nás. Když se cítíme jako bídní červi, kroutící se v temnotě. Když nás zasáhne nějaká děsivá choroba do vnitřností, když krvácíme z očí, když se trápíme nad svým osudem. Existuje hudba, o které si myslím, že musí být nahrávána někde hluboko v podzemí, mezi přízraky, ve špíně a hnusu. Nihilismus, okultismus, hnis a nekonečné utrpení. Tak by se dala charakterizovat i nová deska démonů VEILBURNER z Pensylvánie.

Jakoby mě během poslechu někdo zahalil do krvavé mlhy. Těžko se to popisuje, ale mám opravdu pocit, že jsem spadl do hlubiny, mezi červi, mršiny a pavučiny. Skladby jsou napsány velmi naléhavě, podmanivě, nebál bych se napsat magicky. Mají v sobě takovou tu hnilobnou atmosféru starých hororových filmů. Zhasněte všechna světla, tohle je black death metal, který hoří zevnitř. 


Existuje jiná dimenze, nekonečná temnota vesmíru, která vás strhne do propasti. Alespoň tak vnímám novou desku já, starý metalový pes. Je neotřelá, zajímavá, v určitých momentech avantgardní, progresivní, extrémní takovým tím drásavým způsobem. Styl asi nebude vyhovovat každému, ale to zde ani není účelem. Pokud ale máte rádi kapely jako ULCERATE, BLUT AUS NORD, AKHLYS, ORANSSI PAZUZU, DEATHSPELL OMEGA a další objevovatele nových temných zákoutí, mohla by se vám líbit i tahle deska. Přiznám se bez mučení, zpočátku pro mě byly některé momenty spíše nepříjemné, ale dal jsem nahrávce čas, pouštěl jsem si ji v různých denních hodinách i rozpoložení mé mysli a nejlépe vynikla ve chvílích, kdy na mě padala tíha celého světa. Na tomhle albu není pozitivního zcela nic, tematicky se opravdu setkáváme jen a pouze s temným nihilismem, ale to se dalo tak nějak předpokládat. Zvuk i obal jsem naprosto v pořádku. Hlavní jsou pro mě ale jako vždy nápady, způsob, jakým na mě album působí. Kolem "The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom" jsem nejdříve chodil jako šelma kolem své oběti. K vzájemnému přenosu došlo až po delší době. Rozhodně se u mě nejedná o desku, kterou bych protáčel ve svém přehrávači každý den, ale vždy, když budu mít chuť na něco jiného, odlišného, bolestivého, tak se rád vrátím. Jen musí být kolem mě tma, nejlépe i chlad. Abych mohl spadnout do hlubiny, abych se mohl vznášet nekonečně temným vesmírem. Říká se, že nejhorší je bolest, která je uvnitř nás. Když se cítíme jako bídní červi, kroutící se v temnotě. Když nás zasáhne nějaká děsivá choroba do vnitřností, když krvácíme z očí, když se trápíme nad svým osudem. Existuje hudba, o které si myslím, že musí být nahrávána někde hluboko v podzemí, mezi přízraky, ve špíně a hnusu. Nihilistický, okultní, hnisavý a nekonečně bolestivý black death metal s příchutí zkažené krve!

They say the worst pain is the pain that is inside us. When we feel like miserable worms writhing in the dark. When some terrible disease strikes us in the gut, when our eyes bleed, when we agonize over our fate. There is music that I think must be recorded deep underground, among the ghosts, in the filth and the filth. Nihilism, occultism, pus and endless suffering. That's how one could characterize the new record of Pennsylvania demons VEILBURNER.

It's as if someone enveloped me in a bloody fog while I was listening to it. It's hard to describe, but I really feel like I've fallen into the depths, among worms, carrion and cobwebs. The songs are written very urgently, captivatingly, I wouldn't be afraid to write magically. They have that rotten atmosphere of old horror movies. Turn off all the lights, this is black death metal that burns from within. 


There is another dimension, the infinite darkness of the universe that will pull you into the abyss. At least that's how I, an old metal dog, perceive the new album. It's fresh, interesting, avant-garde at certain moments, progressive, extreme in that jarring way. The style probably won't suit everyone, but that's not even the point here. However, if you like bands like ULCERATE, BLUT AUS NORD, AKHLYS, ORANSSI PAZUZU, DEATHSPELL OMEGA and other explorers of new dark corners, you might like this record too. I'll admit without torture, at first some moments were rather uncomfortable for me, but I gave the record time, played it at different times of the day and states of mind, and it was at its best when the weight of the world was upon me. There's absolutely nothing positive about this album, thematically we really only encounter dark nihilism, but that's to be expected. The sound and cover art I'm totally fine with. But the main thing for me, as always, are the ideas, the way the album affects me. I walked around "The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom" like a beast around its prey at first. It took a long time for the mutual transfer to happen. It's definitely not a record that I'll be spinning through my player every day, but whenever I feel like something different, different, painful, I'll be happy to come back. It just has to be dark around me, preferably even cold. So I can fall into the deep, so I can float through an infinitely dark universe. They say the worst pain is the pain that's inside us. When we feel like miserable worms writhing in the dark. When some terrible disease strikes us in the gut, when our eyes bleed, when we agonize over our fate. There is music that I think must be recorded deep underground, among the ghosts, in the filth and the filth. Nihilistic, occult, festering and endlessly painful black death metal with a taste of tainted blood!

Staří mě varovali, abych si dával pozor. Odkrýval jsem staré hroby v místech, na kterých se kdysi odehrávaly tajemné rituály plné krvavých obětí. V rakvích, rozpadlých skoro na prach nebo jen tak v chladné zemi, byla pochována těla mučených, znásilněných, podřezaných i rozdrcených. Kolem mě se ozýval jejich nářek, jejich touha po pomstě. Na povrch pomalu vylézala další a další děsivá svědectví. Někde v těchto místech muselo být nahráváno i nové album mexických tmářů NIGRUM.

Tahle smečka působí na scéně od roku 2015 a vždy byla věrná svému morbidnímu black metalovému poslání. Nikdy nesešla z cesty. Vy si tak můžete vychutnat novou, letošní desku, která je volným pokračováním minulých nahrávek. Agresivita a nenávist se zde potkávají s tmou, chladem a zkaženou krví. Prokletí by mohli vyprávět!


Kapela se přesunula do Švédska, aby i zde šířila jedinou pravou víru -  v ryzí, démonický black metal. Pánové se samozřejmě nechali volně inspirovat starými smečkami z devadesátých let minulého století ze Skandinávie. A dělají to velmi zkušeně, opravdově a uvěřitelně. Přidávají spoustu vlastních nápadů. Vše je velmi agresivní, nekompromisní, syrové. Skladby řežou tou správnou stranou nože. Líbí se mi prašivý zvuk i stylový obal. NIGRUM vytáhli z těch nejtemnějších katakomb na povrch staré postupy, ušpinili je krví a hodili je po nás jako kusy zahnívajícího masa. V tomhle stylu, více než kde jinde, je důležité, aby bylo slyšet, že to kapela myslí opravdově, že dává do své hudby úplně vše. U téhle smečky to mohu potvrdit. Pánové jsou naplno oddáni základním myšlenkám nekonečného rouhání. Při poslechu nové desky "Blood Worship Extremism" se otáčejí kříže směrem dolů, vaří se svěcená voda a démoni tančí ve zběsilém tempu. Co se týká provedení a celkového dojmu, nemám vlastně žádných námitek. Naopak, nahrávku si užívám, rád se k ní vracím a pouštím ji všem ovcím, modlícím se k dávno padlým svatým. Není to ale jenom vichr v márnici, který nám kapela předkládá na víku od rakve. Zazní i klidnější, chladné a drásavé momenty. Líbí se mi, že je všechno ohlodané na kost, že skladby hoří jasným plamenem a smrdí sírou. Pokud to máte také takhle extrémně a nekompromisně rádi, neváhejte ani chvilku. V rakvích, rozpadlých skoro na prach nebo jen tak v chladné zemi, byla pochována těla mučených, znásilněných, podřezaných i rozdrcených. Kolem mě se ozýval jejich nářek, jejich touha po pomstě. Na povrch pomalu vylézala další a další děsivá svědectví. Tajemný, divoký a krvavý black metalový rituál! Tohle album vás roztrhá na kusy a pohřbí zaživa!

The old men warned me to be careful. I've uncovered old graves in places where mysterious rituals of blood sacrifice once took place. Bodies of the tortured, the raped, the slashed and the crushed were buried in coffins, almost crumbled to dust or simply in the cold earth. Their cries echoed around me, their desire for revenge. Slowly, more and more horrifying testimonies came to the surface. Somewhere in these places, the new album by Mexican darkies NIGRUM must have been recorded.

This pack has been on the scene since 2015 and has always been true to their morbid black metal mission. They have never strayed from the path. So you can enjoy this year's new album, which is a loose continuation of past releases. Aggression and hatred meet darkness, coldness and corrupted blood here. Curses could tell a tale!


The band moved to Sweden to spread the only true belief - pure, demonic black metal. Of course, the gentlemen were freely inspired by the old nineties bands from Scandinavia. And they do it very skilled, real and believable. They add a lot of their own ideas. Everything is very aggressive, uncompromising, raw. They cut the songs with the right side of the knife. I like the dusty sound and the stylish cover. NIGRUM have pulled the old ways out of the darkest catacombs, stained them with blood and thrown them at us like pieces of rotting meat. In this style, more than anywhere else, it's important to hear that the band means business, that they give their all to their music. I can attest to that with this pack. The gentlemen are fully committed to the basic ideas of endless blasphemy. Listening to the new album "Blood Worship Extremism", the crosses turn downwards, holy water boils and demons dance at a furious pace. In terms of performance and overall impression, I actually have no complaints. On the contrary, I enjoy the recording, I like to go back to it and play it for all the sheep praying to the long fallen saints. But it's not just a whirlwind in the morgue that the band presents to us on the coffin lid. There are quieter, cooler and more poignant moments too. I like that everything is chewed to the bone, that the songs burn with a bright flame and reek of sulphur. If you also like it this extreme and uncompromising, don't hesitate a moment. The bodies of the tortured, the raped, the slashed and the crushed were buried in coffins, almost crumbled to dust or just in the cold ground. Their cries echoed around me, their desire for revenge. Slowly, more and more horrifying testimonies came to the surface. A mysterious, savage and bloody black metal ritual! This album will tear you apart and bury you alive!

Když jsem vstoupil do podzemí poprvé, tak mě fascinoval zápach smrti, který byl všude cítit. Hniloba, rozklad těl prokletých, kteří nemohli být převedeni na druhou stranu. Dlouhá, temná chodba končila u rezavé brány. Naposledy se mě zeptali, jestli chci vstoupit dovnitř. Poprvé mě přepadla zvědavost někdy na konci osmdesátých let minulého století. Od té doby navštěvuji zemi nekonečných stínů pravidelně. A hledám v ní kapely, které umí přenést děsivé nálady ze záhrobí mezi nás, obyčejné smrtelníky. Když mi přišla na recenzi nová deska kapely NOGOTHULA z Ohia, chodil jsem nejdříve jenom opatrně okolo.

Nejdříve mě zaujal obal, pod kterým je podepsán Niklas Webjörn. Ten namaloval dílo, které se mi ihned dostalo do podvědomí. Následovalo moje první setkání s hudbou těchto tmářů. Sedl jsem si, jak je mým zvykem, k reproduktorům, zhasl jsem všechna světla a otevřel okno do tmy. Z ulice se ozýval nářek prokletých. Najednou jsem byl na druhé straně, za oponou a užíval jsem si surový, masivní a chladný zvuk. Nové album "Telluric Sepsis" se mi dostalo ihned pod kůži. A zanechalo po sobě hlubokou krvavou stopu. 


Ihned došlo ke vzájemnému přenosu mezi mnou a kapelou. Nové skladby mi kolovaly v žilách, byly jako kousky ledu, jako chlad, jako mrazení v zádech. Album je opravdu dobře napsáno. Pokud bych měl nějak definovat styl, se kterým pánové přicházejí, zmínil bych smečky jako DECAPITATED, SUFFOCATION, GORGUTS, OBSCURA, CRYPTOPSY, NILE, MORBID ANGEL, INCANTATION, ale i třeba NOCTURNUS. Má slova ale berte jen jako takové připodobnění, abyste měli představu. Jinak je novinka plná vlastní nápadů a invence. Líbí se mi i takový zvláštní, do black metalové a progresivní mlhy zahalený odér, který se vznáší všude kolem. Jedná se o kapelu, složenou ze samých zkušených muzikantů (VERMENT), kteří přesně vědí, co a jak chtějí hrát. Propracovaný death metal. Jednotlivé pasáže mají jasnou strukturu, nosné riffy, které se velmi dobře poslouchají. Není to jednorázová záležitost, spoustu temných zákoutí naleznete až po delším čase. Zkrátka a dobře, stále mám chuť se k nahrávce vracet. Má v sobě něco zvláštního, nebál bych se napsat magického, co mě přitahuje. Jsem prokletý! Jakoby mi po celou dobu stál někdo s těžkou okovanou botou na hrudníku. Určitě jste někdy zažili takový ten nepříjemný pocit, když jste se topili. NOGOTHULA jdou na hranu a dělají to velmi přesvědčivě, opravdově. Tohle je smradlavý kov smrti, ukovaný z těch nejlepších a nejkvalitnějších slitin. Jako starý pes, který hlídá vchod do podsvětí snad odnepaměti, vám mohu desku "Telluric Sepsis" doporučit. Garantuji vám, že u ní shnijete zaživa. Když jsem vstoupil do podzemí poprvé, tak mě fascinoval zápach smrti, který byl všude cítit. When I first entered the underground, I was fascinated by the smell of death that was everywhere. The rot, the decomposition of the bodies of the damned who could not be transferred to the other side. The long, dark corridor ended at a rusty gate. I was asked one last time if I wanted to enter. I was first seized with curiosity sometime in the late 1980s. Since then, I've visited the Land of Endless Shadows regularly. And I look for bands that can bring the eerie moods of the beyond to us mere mortals. When the new record by Ohio band NOGOTHULA came up for review, I was just cautiously walking around at first.

I was first attracted by the cover artwork, signed by Niklas Webjörn. He painted a piece of artwork that immediately got into my consciousness. What followed was my first encounter with the music of these darkies. I sat down, as is my custom, in front of the speakers, turned off all the lights and opened a window into the darkness. From the street came the cries of the damned. Suddenly I was on the other side, behind the curtain, enjoying the raw, massive, cold sound. The new album "Telluric Sepsis" got under my skin immediately. And it left a deep, bloody trail. 


Immediately there was a mutual transmission between me and the band. The new songs were in my veins, they were like chunks of ice, like a chill. The album is really well written. If I had to define somehow the style the gentlemen come up with, I would mention packs like DECAPITATED, SUFFOCATION, GORGUTS, OBSCURA, CRYPTOPSY, NILE, MORBID ANGEL, INCANTATION, but also NOCTURNUS. But take my words only as an analogy to give you an idea. Otherwise the novelty is full of my own ideas and inventiveness. I also like such a strange, black metal and progressive fog shrouded odor that is floating around. This is a band made up of all experienced musicians (VERMENT) who know exactly what and how they want to play. Sophisticated death metal. The individual passages have a clear structure, supporting riffs that are very easy to listen to. It's not a one-off affair, you will find a lot of dark corners after a longer time. In short, I still feel like coming back to the record. It has something special, I wouldn't be afraid to write magical, that attracts me. I'm cursed! It's as if someone with a heavy galvanized boot on my chest has been standing there the whole time. I'm sure you've had that unpleasant feeling when you're drowning. NOGOTHULA go for the edge and do it very convincingly, genuinely. This is the stinking metal of death, forged from the finest and highest quality alloys. As an old dog who has been guarding the entrance to the underworld since perhaps time immemorial, I can recommend the album "Telluric Sepsis" to you. I guarantee it will rot you alive.
