A few questions - Interview with death metal band from Italy - ONTBORG.

Answered Christoph.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play , etc.?

Our Band is called Ontborg and was founded in 2017. All the members are based in South Tyrol, which is situated in the North of Italy. We play some kind of old school swedish melodic death/black metal. We all grew up with bands like Dismember, Necrophobic, Entombed etc. and we wanted to create music with the same feel.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

We did record the album at Sound Control recording studios in Merano. Lukas Flarer our guitar player and vocalist is the studio owner, so he is responsible for recording, mixing and mastering.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

„Within The Depths Of Oblivion“ will be released as CD an in digital form. For now we have printed 300 copies. Of course the album will also be available on all common digital platforms.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

All lyrics were written by Lukas himself, except „Black Garden“, which was written by Christoph. Normally we start writing the lyrics when the song is already finished. Working that way you have a better feel, where the song needs some vocals and where music can stand by it’s own. Most of the lyrics don‘t have a special story or background, the focus by writing the lyrics was more set on how they translate the dark feeling and atmosphere of the song. It was also very important to see the vocals as an additional instrument in a rhythmical aspect. For that, singing the right word in the right place is very important.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The cover artwork was created by the very talented Juanjo Castellano from Spain. Figuring out how creating the cover was a matter of minutes. We send him 3 covers we liked, mentioned things we don’t want to have, and he came back with that awesome cover! We changed nothing! Just perfect for our music and he nailed our taste right away. The logo was hand drawn by Lukas and than digitalized.

For now we take care ourselfs for social media like pages as Facebook, graphics etc. We have some help, but most of all Christoph is involved in all that stuff as sending CD’s and mp3’s to the fanzines for all the reviews and interviews.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takes care about you?

The CD is selfreleased. We are working with the promotional agency „Metalmessage“ for a more effective and larger reach.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

Idolise is maybe the wrong term. Within the band we all love metal, since years! We all have differend kind of music styles that we like, but of course we all have in common that we like the early old death and black metal stuff. That’s the reason why we also love to play that sound. That old HM2 guitar tone has really something special to it.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

No we didn’t. We decided from the beginning to selfrelease this album. Maybe for the next album we are looking for a record label.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

The release of this album is on may 24th. On this day will also be our first live show and it will be a small club show. Our second show will probably be a bigger one, playing on the ROCK IM RING Open Air (www.rockimring.it) where normally show several thousand people. Both types of shows (club or festivals) have their different charm.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

First of all, we wanna play music that we like. We all have now a long musical background and all of us played in different bands in the past for over 20 years.

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

You can contact us simply by mail (ontborg@gmail.com) or on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ontborg). Write us a message and we will come back to you. We also have a bandcamp page (https://ontborg.bandcamp.com/), where all our merch and the physical CD is available. Go there and have a look!

Thanx for the interview.
