Interview - VOORHEES - No messages, no politics, no advice, just death-metal and gore.

Ave VOORHEES! I haven’t found any interview in the Czech language with you, yet. So please, first introduce the band to our readers who don’t know you. You could start from the early beginnings and describe the whole VOORHEES history. 

Chris: Voorhees was born in April 2017. I had this project in my mind for many years : combining death-metal and old horror movies, like the first death-metal albums such as „Scream Bloody Gore“ or „Slowly We Rot“. Coming back to the roots of this music was the main goal for me. No messages, no politics, no advice, just death-metal and gore. 

Today, Voorhees is Seb on lead guitars, Will on drums & backing vocals, Fred on bass and me on guitar & vocals.


I’m just listening to your new record „Chapter Two“ and I feel like as if I am closed in some tomb together with JUNGLE ROT, BOLT THROWER, MEMORIAM, BODYFARM, GRAVE, ASPHYX. The record has a great dark sound. Where did you record it and how satisfied you are with it? Did you have the "last word" concerning the resulting sound? 

Fred: Well, the album was recorded and mastered by our drummer Will, then it was mastered by Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Bloodbath...). We are totally satisfied with the job they did. We had the last word, but there was nothing to say. 

Chris: Will, our drummer, is a fucking great sound engineer and has a home studio. It was very nice to record our album ourselves with no delay or pressure. We took the time we needed. Will did a great job, and Dan Swanö finalized this record, giving it the old school sound we wanted.



How was the new material for album „Chapter Two“ created? How exactly VOORHEES writes the music? 

Chris : Each member writes music. Sometimes a complete song, sometimes somes riffs. Except for Fred, we work on „Cubase“, it‘s easier to propose songs to each person. Fred prefers to work on „Guitar Pro“, I have 3 or 4 dozens of his files which are on my hard disk !! lol He can write a song a day !!! But we work together on rehearsal to give life to the songs.


„Chapter Two“ has dark cover art. Who is an author? I really like his work. How did you actually choose the idea of the cover and what exactly illustrates? 

Chris : Fabrice ROMO (www.fabriceromo.fr) is the author. He‘s a very good friend. We work with him since the begining of this adventure. He drew the logo, the „Chapter One“ cover, the T-shirts designs, all about Voorhees visuals. We trust him, he‘s a complete member of the band. He‘s our Ed Repka or Dan Seagrave lol. 

Could you reveal us who is an author of the lyrics and what is their background? Where did you take inspiration for certain topics? 

Fred: Chris writes the lyrics. Generally, he writes about horror films from the 1980s, but he is sometimes inspired by serial killers. 

Chris: Yes, horror movies from the 70‘s to the 90‘s are the best movies in my opinion. Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street… VOORHEES does not speak only about „Friday the 13th“ movies. But when I thought about this death-metal project, I wanted a name that could remind people about all this period. I know that this name VOORHEES means nothing to some people but in general people who love old school death-metal know the character of Jason Voorhees. 

I write the lyrics and Fred corrects them. He’s an English teacher, it’s a plus!!!


You play music as old as death metal itself. How do you perceive new directions in the death metal? I mean mixing with death core or technical death metal? Do you have any favourite bands in “modern metal”? 

Fred: I do not listen to „modern“ metal, all the bands I listen to are rather old. 

Chris: Me too. New bands I listen are still bands playing old school death-metal like SKELETAL REMAINS or SENTIENT HORROR, I really love these bands. I am a METALLICA fan since 1984 too. I don‘t like all the „core“ metal excepted the real hardcore such as AGNOSTIC FRONT, TERROR, VERBAL ABUSE or PRO-PAIN even if I don‘t regularly listen to these bands, their music talks to my mind. But my favourite bands remain DEATH, DEICIDE, OBITUARY, ASPHYX or BOLT THROWER (and many many more…) 

Seb also likes bands such as OBSCURA or BEYOND CREATION, and he‘s a great CARCASS fan.

Will likes old school death-metal too and especially Swedish bands but also some american bands like DEATH, DEICIDE & OBITUARY too. As you can see, all musicians are rooted in the old school.



What about VOORHEES and concerts? Do you play a lot? Are you going on tour or you are choosing only bigger festivals? And what about touring over Europe? 

Fred: As we all have a job, we only play at weekends, that's why we can't tour : it would be too complicated to organize. 

Chris: We prefer to play less but better. And we‘re not afraid to travel to play. We‘re looking for nice clubs or festivals (small or big, we don‘t care).


Can you recommend some new albums, which impressed you at the latest time? 

Fred: I recommend „Ballistic Sadistic“ from Annihilator and „Titans of Creation“ from Testament, even if I have not listened to it yet, I'm confident : an album with Steve Di'Giorgio and Gene Hoglan can be nothing but awesome! 

Chris: SENTIENT HORROR „Morbid Realms“. Old school forever !!! 

Do you know and listen to some metal bands from the Czech Republic? 

Fred: I listened to Krabathor, but I don't know if it still exists. Are there any bands you could advise us? 

Chris: I know SURGERY for some months and their music is fucking great !!


We are slowly approaching the end of the interview so I would like to ask one more philosophical question. How would you define the death metal style? What represents this music for you and why did you choose exactly this genre? 

Fred: death metal is a shock I had when I was a teenager : I listened to Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, Slayer, Kreator, … and then I discovered Cannibal Corpse, Death, Asphyx, Obituary, Carcass … Check the videos of „The End Complete“, „Corporal Jigsore Quandary“ or „Lack of Comprehension“, listen to „I Cum Blood“, you will understand. At the time, it was so huge, each band had its own personality, it was dark, powerful, mysterious, a little frightening, almost dangerous. I don't know if I chose the genre or if the genre chose me. With thrash metal, death metal represents my whole life. 

Chris: I bought my first death-metal album in 1987, it was „Scream Bloody Gore“… it was a fucking revelation !! This music combines all I like in metal. Dark voice, nice music, horror lyrics. I've been listening to hard rock since Hell‘s Bells in 1980, 40 years… And death-metal for 33 years, almost all my life.


What VOORHEES is planning for the next few months? 

Fred: Composing Chapter III and having fun with the band. 

Chris: Having fun with my VOORHEES friends, their families, on stage and in life. Writing Chapter 3.

Ticho, proč je zde tak tíživé ticho? Může za to otevřená rakev s tvým tělem nebo jsou všichni již tolik unaveni smutkem? Sešli jsme se zde, abychom zavzpomínali. Na prsou nás tíží vzpomínky a obřad proběhne dle všech nepsaných pravidel. Poslední rozloučení, hrst hlíny, hozená na rakev. Sedím již několik dní na lavičce u tvého hrobu a nemůžu se nadechnout. Proč? Ptám se stále dokola a odpovědí je mi jen šelest stromů sklánějících se nad náhrobky. Jen málokdo dokáže hudbou podobnou atmosféru vytvořit. Američtí death doom metalisté TEMPLE OF VOID patří mezi vyvolené.

Kapela patří již několik let mezi smečky, které sleduji s velkým napětím. Každou novinku potom převaluji jako nějaký vzácný artefakt v rukou a těším se na okamžik, až si ji pustím ve svém přehrávači. Panychida v podobě "The World That Was" může začít.




"The World That Was" na mě působí jako ozvěny z onoho světa. Dlouhé, smutné melodie, mráz ve skladbách, Mikův (jinak také ACID WITCH) hluboký a emocemi nabitý vokál, tohle všechno dělá z novinky hodně chutný pokrm. V rychlých pasážích může nechat kapela vzpomenout kupříkladu na takové ASPHYX, BOLT THROWER, v pomalejších (kterých je většina) zase na SHADE OF DISPAIR, MY DYING BRIDE, HOODED MENACE, SOLOTHUS, COFFINS, ANATOMIA, WINTER. U tohoto stylu je velmi důležité a zásadní, jestli umí muzikanti vytvořit potřebnou pochmurnou atmosféru. Dalo by se napsat, že TEMPLE OF VOID jsou mistry ve svém oboru. Je hrozně příjemné a zároveň bolestivé se nechat unášet na krvavě zpěněných vlnách řeky death doom metalu v jejich podání. Hudba jakoby přicházela odněkud z hlubin, z druhé strany, možná z mrazivého vesmíru. Dotek studené ruky mrtvého těla, pohled do očí, ze kterých nedávno vyprchal život. Američané dokáží být ostří jako žiletky, připravené na vaše zápěstí, umí znázornit bolest, smutek, strach. Death doom metalová mantra, u které vás pohřbí zaživa!


Asphyx says:


Silence, why is there such a heavy silence? Is it because of the open coffin with your body inside or are they all so tired of sadness? We met here to remember. We are burdened with memories and the ceremony will follow all unwritten rules. The last farewell, a handful of clay thrown on the coffin. I've been sitting on the bench at your grave for several days and I can't breathe. Why? I ask all the time and the answer is just a rustle of trees bending over the tombstones. Only few bands can create a music-like atmosphere. American death doom metallers TEMPLE OF VOID are one of them.

The band has been among the bands I have been watching with great tension for several years. Then I roll every news like a rare artifact in my hands and look forward to the moment I play it in my player. Opus in the form of "The World That Was" can begin.



"The World That Was" acts like echoes from the other world. Long, sad melodies, frost in songs, Mike's (or ACID WITCH) deep and emotionally charged vocal, all this makes the news a very tasty dish. In fast passages, the band can remember bands such as ASPHYX, BOLT THROWER, in slower (most of them) turn to SHADE OF DISPAIR, MY DYING BRIDE, HOODED MENACE, SOLOTHUS, COFFINS, ANATOMIA, WINTER. In this style, it is very important and crucial whether musicians can create the necessary gloomy atmosphere. You could write that TEMPLE OF VOID are masters of their field. It is very pleasant and at the same time painful to be carried away on the blood-foamed waves of the death doom metal in their performance. The music seemed to come from somewhere in the deep, on the other side, perhaps from the freezing universe. A touch of the cold hand of a dead body, a look into the eyes from which life has recently passed. Americans can be sharp like razor blades, ready for your wrist, they can depict pain, sadness, fear. Death doom metal mantra that will bury you alive!

DEADLY STORM ZINE - právě poslouchám / I´m listening now - INCANTATION!



Jsem stejně jako vy hlavně fanoušek. Každý den s muzikou vstávám, rvu si ji do uší cestou do práce, uchyluji se k hudbě pokaždé, když to jenom jde. Pořád, již přes třicet let, si dělám večery u desek, které mám rád. K některým se vracím opakovaně a často. Třeba mé chutě osloví i vás. Tohle jsou alba, která jsem si opět naladil ve svých přehrávačích. Asphyxův tip pro dnešní den je...nechte si chutnat!

Mainly I'm fan like you. Every day I get up with music, I listen to music on my way to work, I return to music when it is possible. More than 30 years I listen to my records every evening. Some of them again and again. Maybe my choise can addres you too. These are records that I like. Asphyx' hint for today............... Let's enjoy it!

Toulám se temnými chodbami podsvětí a marně hledám svoji smrt. Nahlížím do tajných katakomb, naslouchám ozvěnám z onoho světa. Jsem tulákem nicoty, posluchačem, který prosévá mezi prsty prach nemrtvých. Žiji ve stínu a uznávám už jen kapely, které mě dokáží přenést na druhou stranu. Mám rád starý, prašivý death metal, stále s nadšením ochutnám i dobrý doom metal. Oceňuji hlavně hudbu, která ve mě zanechá mrazivou stopu. Jedna kobka má na dveřích nápis GRACELESS. Už dnes vím, že jsem zde správně. Našel jsem svoji smrt.


Přiznám se, že předchozí album této smečky z roku 2017 ("Shadowlands") patřilo k mým nejhranějším v uplynulých letech. Rád a často jsem se k němu vracel. Na novinku jsem se tedy nesmírně těšil. Ihned jsem zakoupil CD i triko (motiv od Alexandera Tartsuse je jedním slovem úžasný) a těšil se, až mi vše přijde domů. Již první poslech připomínal starý okultní obřad (hodně k tomu přispěl i masivní, syrový zvuk). Nechal jsem desku uzrát, proniknout jí do krve. Toulal jsem se temnými chodbami podsvětí a hledal jsem svoji smrt.



Mohutné riffy, chladná atmosféra, řeka plná krve. GRACELESS se i na novince pohybují ve stejných oblastech jako kapely BOLT THROWER, TEMPLE OF VOID, ASPHYX, HOODED MENACE, COFFINS, HAIL OF BULLET, THANATOS, BOLT THROWER ale i třeba SINISTER, PESTILENCE. V některých momentech mi kytarový rukopis lehce připomíná i práci Gregora Mackintoshe (PARADISE LOST) a jeho VALLENFYRE, STRIGOI. Skladby v sobě mají drive, jsou neskutečně heavy a zároveň obsahují takovou tu černou vášeň, kterou v sobě mají muzikanti ze staré metalové školy. "Where Vultures Know Your Name" je poctivý, ryzím albem, ze kterého je cítit, že bylo nahráno srdcem. Přeneslo mě do nekonečných močálů, ve kterých má mlha barvu krve. Zmínit musím i vokál, Mr. Remco Kreft zpívá s opravdovou morbidní jiskrou v hlase. Procházím se podzemím a kolem praskají prašivé kosti. Přidávám volume a kolem tančí démoni. Stará kobka s názvem GRACELESS vydala další svědectví. Je mocné, zákeřné, temné i chladné zároveň. Je výpovědí o starém dobrém death doom metalu. Absolutní mrazivá temnota!

I wander through the dark corridors of the underworld and vainly seek my death. I look into secret catacombs, listen to echoes from the other world. I am a wanderer of nothingness, a listener who sieves the dust of undead between his fingers. I live in the shade and I only recognize bands that can transfer me to the other side. I like old, rainy death metal, I still like to enjoy good doom metal. I especially appreciate the music that will leave a chilling track in me. One cell has GRACELESS on the door. I already know is good that I am here right now. I found my death.

I admit that the previous album of this band from 2017 ("Shadowlands") was one of my most played in recent years. I liked and often returned to it. So I was looking forward to the news. I immediately bought a CD and a T-shirt (Alexander Tartsus theme is amazing in one word) and looked forward to delivery. Already the first listening resembled an old occult ceremony (a massive, raw sound also contributed a lot). I let the album mature, penetrate into my blood. I wandered through the dark corridors of the underworld, searching for my death.



Great riffs, cool atmosphere, river full of blood. GRACELESS are also in the same areas as BOLT THROWER, TEMPLE OF VOID, ASPHYX, HOODED MENACE, COFFINS, HAIL OF BULLET, THANATOS, BOLT THROWER and also SINISTER, PESTILENCE. In some moments the guitar reminds me of the work of Greg Mackintosh (PARADISE LOST) and his VALLENFYRE, STRIGOI. The songs have a drive, they are incredibly heavy and they contain the black passion that musicians from the old metal school have in them. "Where Vultures Know Your Name" is an honest, genuine album that feels like it was recorded by heart. It brought me to endless marshes in which the fog was blood-colored. I have to mention the vocal, Mr. Remco Kreft sings with a true morbid spark in his voice. I walk through the underground, and bruising bones burst around. I'm adding volume and demons dancing around. The old dungeon called GRACELESS gave another testimony. It is powerful, insidious, dark and cold at the same time. It is a testimony of good old death doom metal. Absolute freezing darkness!

Ležím na kamenném stole již několik dní a jsem připraven zemřít. Z očí mi lezou červi, v břiše se usadila sněť a kosti mě pálí. Cítím jak ze mě postupně odchází život. Poslední nádech, výdech a potom už jen nicota. Co bude dál? Světlo na konci tunelu nepřichází, ale jen bolest. Někde mezi naším a oním světem jsem potkal i novou desku amerických death metalistů CEMETERY FILTH. Kapely, která mi pomohla přejít na druhou stranu. Černé svědomí, kusy shnilého masa z těla, které kdysi patřilo mě. Ve starých katakombách se někdy dějí hodně podivné věci.

První, co mě jako fanouška starého poctivého fanouška staré smrti doslova uhodilo do očí, tak je překrásný obal. Perfektně doplňuje muziku jako takovou i celkový dojem z ní. Další z povedených záležitostí je zvuk. Prašivý a zlý, temný, tajemný a ošklivý. Přesně podle mého gusta. A nakonec atmosféra. Pohřbívají mě zaživa? Toulám se podsvětím? Jsem navěky prokletý? Na všechny otázky odpovídám ano. 



Tohle je přesně hudba pro fanoušky kapel jako DEICIDE, MALEVOLENT CREATION, PESTILENCE, MORBID ANGEL, SINISTER, REPULSION, AUTOPSY a dalších, které přesně věděly a vědí, o čem je opravdová smrt. Nad hřbitovem se vznáší divný puch. Ubíhají dny a mé tělo prochází postupným rozkladem. Stejně jako hudba na debutovém dlouhohrajícím albu "Dominion" vykazuje všechny příznaky dlouhého konce bez naděje. CEMETERY FILTH pomocí svého přístupu stvořili dílo, které jen tak z hlavy nevyženu. Jedná se o pravý, reálný a rezavý old school death metal v podobě, ve které koluje i v mých žilách. Výkřiky a ozvěny ze záhrobí mohou znít různými způsoby, ale tenhle lahodí mému uchu. Album je neskutečně heavy, temné a zákeřné. Navíc skladby obsahují třaskavou směs energie a na hrubo nakrájené tmy. Ležím na kamenném stole již několik dní a jsem připraven zemřít. Z očí mi lezou červi, v břiše se usadila sněť a kosti mě pálí. Cítím jak ze mě postupně odchází život. Poslední nádech, výdech a potom už jen nicota. Co bude dál? Dál už bude jen death metal! Smrt si říká CEMETERY FILTH!

I've been lying on the stone table for several days and I am ready to die. Worms come out of my eyes, gangrene settled in my stomach, and my bones burn. I can feel life coming out of me. The last inhalation, exhalation, and then nothingness. What will be next? The light at the end of the tunnel is not coming but only pain. Somewhere between ours and the other world, I met a new album of American death metallers CEMETERY FILTH. The band that helped me switch to the other side. Black conscience, pieces of rotten flesh from the body that once belonged to me. Sometimes weird things happen in the old catacombs.

The first thing that literally struck me as a fan of an honest old death metal is a beautiful cover. It is perfectly fit to the music itself and the overall impression of it. Another good thing is the sound. Terrible and evil, dark, mysterious and ugly. Exactly what I like. And finally the atmosphere. Do they bury me alive? Wander the underworld? Am I cursed forever? To all questions I answered - yes.

This is exactly music for fans of bands like DEICIDE, MALEVOLENT CREATION, PESTILENCE, MORBID ANGEL, SINISTER, REPULSION, AUTOPSY and others who know exactly what real death is all about. There is a strange odor above the cemetery. Days pass and my body is undergoing gradual disintegration. Like the music on the debut album "Dominion", it shows all the signs of a long end without hope. Using their approach, CEMETERY FILTH created a piece of work that I can't just get out of my head. It is a real, real and rusty old school death metal in a form that circulates in my veins. Screams and echoes from the grave may sound in different ways, but this one appeals to my ear. The album is incredibly heavy, dark and insidious. In addition, the compositions contain a shaky mix of energy and darkly chopped darkness. I've been lying on the stone table for several days and ready to die. Worms come out of my eyes, gangrene settled in my stomach, and my bones burn. I can feel life coming out of me. The last inhalation, exhalation, and then nothingness. What will be next? There will only be death metal! Death calls herself CEMETERY FILTH!

Úkol zněl jasně, srovnat tuhle márnici se zemí. Bereme do rukou kladiva a začínáme u kamenných zdí. Odkrýváme jednotlivé vrstvy a nemrtví naříkají. Kolem se vznáší šílený puch, století smrti, dostáváme se až k samé podstatě bytí. Drtíme staré kosti, lámeme víka od rakví. Unaveni pijeme tvrdý alkohol. Práce hrobníka je těžká a náročná, ale dnes se usmíváme. K našim úderům nám totiž hraje finská kapela NERVE SAW. Jejich hudba je stejně shnilá a prašivá, jako dnešní den.


Dýcháme dlouhá léta pach mrtvol, kopeme hluboké hroby. Světlo často nevidíme několik dní a našimi nejlepšími přáteli jsou zombie. Zmrzlá země, staré rakve a všude přítomná smrt. Myslím, že death metal ušpiněný punkem a syrovým hardcore se k naší práci více než hodí. 




Tuhle smečku založil Markus Makkonen ze SADISTIK FOREST (ex HOODED MENACE) v roce 2010 s tím, že bude hrát hudbu inspirovanou kapelami typu OBITUARY, MASTER, DISMEMBER a SIX FEET UNDER. Přibral k sobě dva kamarády a výsledkem je debutové album "Peril", které se ihned zakouslo do mého mozku jako nějaká zlá choroba. Skladby jsou velmi špinavé, syrové a opravdu připomínají těžkou práci starých hrobníků. Nevím, jestli jste někdy doopravdy drtili staré kosti, ale nálada hudby na této desce je velmi podobná. Představte si mlhavé ráno na starodávném hřbitově. Otevřete rezavou bránu a vstoupíte mezi hroby. Máte divný pocit, že se zde přes noc stalo něco zlého. Stačí pár okamžiků, několik dalších skladeb a máte jasno. Tohle je starý, prašivý old school death metal, u kterého pukají lebky tlakem, nadskakují víka od rakví a Smrt tančí nekonečný tanec. Samozřejmě, všechno se odehrává v rytmu alba "Peril", které bych tímto rád doporučil všem fanouškům poctivého pohřbívání do země. Masakr v márnici!



Asphyx says:

The task was clear, to level this morgue with the ground. We take the hammers and start at the stone walls. We uncover individual layers and undead start to cry. There is a mad odor, a century of death floating around us; we are getting to the very essence of being. We are crushing old bones, breaking coffin lids. Totally tired we drink alcohol. The work of the gravedigger is challenging and difficult, but today we are smiling. According to our beats, the Finnish band NERVE SAW is playing. Their music is as rotten and scabby as this day.

We breathe the smell of corpses and dig deep graves for years. We often do not see the light for several days, and zombies are our best friends. Frozen earth, old coffins and death present everywhere. I think death metal dirtied by punk and raw hardcore is more than perfect for our work.


This band was founded by Markus Makkonen from SADISTIK FOREST (ex-HOODED MENACE) in 2010 with the purpose to play music inspired by bands like OBITUARY, MASTER, DISMEMBER and SIX FEET UNDER. He brought together two friends and the result is the debut album "Peril", which immediately bit into my brain like a bad disease. The songs are very dirty, raw and really reminiscent of the hard work of old gravediggers. I don't know if you've ever really crushed old bones, but the mood of the music on this record is very similar. Imagine a misty morning at the ancient cemetery. Open the rusty gate and enter between the graves. You have a strange feeling that something bad happened here overnight. Just a few moments, a few more songs, and everything is clear. This is an old, raw old school death metal causes skulls bursting under the pressure, coffin lids jumping. Moreover, Death is dancing her endless dance. Of course, everything is happening in the rhythm of the album "Peril", which I would like to recommend to all fans of honest burial into the ground. Massacre in the morgue!

A few questions - interview with death metal band from Finland - NERVE SAW. 

(all answers by Markus Makkonen, bass vocals)

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play , etc.? 

"Hi Jakub, Nerve Saw was formed in 2010 by me. It was originally a way to express my love towards my early influences in death metal, like Obituary, Master and Six Feet Under. Did record an EP in 2011, all by myself, but it was buried in the vaults of a record label that is better left not mentioned here. They were not too active, you know. Hahah! Old Skull Productions finally dug the EP up and released it a couple of years ago. Since then, the band has grown to be a full three-piece, when Heikki Matero joined to play guitar and Michael Dorrian started to play drums for us. Musically, we've also added a bit more "crossover" feel to it, with adding punk and hardcore to typical death metal thing." 


Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering? 

"Our debut album Peril was recorded in Barcelona, Spain. In Moontower Studios run by Javier Felez of Graveyard and Teitanblood. He did a great job and he did really understand the approach we were looking for. Working with Javi was real smooth and I'm really looking forward to record with him in the future again. Hopefully for a new Nerve Saw album." 

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)? 

"Peril comes out via Testimony Records. They have done a great job with promotion and packaging. The CD edition of the album is 400, i think and there are three different versions of the vinyl, all 100 a piece." 


Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal
with? 

"I wrote all the lyrics for the album. Personally, I really find it boring of singing about ghouls and goblins (it's like singing about Santa Claus), so everything is quite "real" with Nerve Saw. "A Fool" is about people who follow the pack wherever and dont think with their own brains, Ghosts in Dialogue is about people who rant on bygone ideas of somebody else, thinking someone else's thoughts are theirs, even it really cannot be like that. Then there's anti-religious lyrics like "Nails" and some thoughts in "Wolves of the 80s" reflecting on my childhood in Cold War era Finland, and how some of the modern day aspects seem to be a lot alike. All in all, i guess it is criticism over human stoopidity and herd mentality of the social media era world we live in today."


Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important? 

"Graphics are of course important, as they portrait an image for the music itself. Back in the day, before internet, album covers were maybe even more important, as you would often buy albums that had the most "promising" covers in them. Artwork for Peril was done by Raul "Mortuus" Fuentes, who is a fantastic artist working with ink and pens. He did this gnarly art for the album, that really reflects the music and the lyrics too, as there are some references towards the "witch-hunts" of modern day social media there." 

"Nerve Saw logo was done by Toni Hietomaa, a Finnish artist who has worked with Funebre, Convulse, Impetigo, Vulcano etc. Real old school dude and a great guy. A die-hard metal fan. Raul Fuentes did the album cover and Turkka Rantanen, who did all the early 1990's Finnish death metal stuff did the EP artwork, back in 2011. "





Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you? 

"Testimony Records were one of the very first we contacted for this album. They have done a real good job with the bands they have and have good promotion and distribution. These were the main reasons and at least so far, everything has been working out real well with them. Even in these difficult times we are facing now." 

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration? 

"As a band, it is important to let everybody's personal input be audible in the music. Mike is a fan of early 1990's death metal, but also crossover stuff like Suicidal Tendencies. Heikki is fan of hardcore stuff like Raised Fist, but he also likes bands like Helltrain, Kreator and Duskfall. While I was writing my parts for the album, I tried to find inspiration in bands that have a strong "momentum" and "drive". The unstoppable thing in their music. Early Sepultura, Carnivore, Motörhead and Celtic Frost all being definitely like this. Also, Disfear was important."

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response? 

"The label hunt for this particular album was rather short.. haha! Testimony was the second label we contacted and they replied pretty fast that they were interested. There was no need to go hunting any further and it was great, as it usually is not this easy."


How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best? 

"Nerve Saw as a band has not played any shows so far. In the beginning it was just me in the band anyways, but now as we are a full band, we could actually play shows if somebody asks us to. The thing is, that everybody in the band has been playing metal since the mid-90's and we have all played a lot of shows already, so we are not in a hurry in that department. And currently, you cannot even go anywhere because of the virus! Hahah! We use the downtime to write an album #2 instead. As far as the gigs go, my favourites are the small, sweaty and packed clubs where things really get intense." 

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band? 

"We are currently working on what will be our second album, all of us separately in our homes. Our plan is to get together with guitarist Heikki after the Corona-thing bypasses and gather up the riffs we have already. Then make some rough demos for Mike and send them over, so he can start working for the drums on them. At the moment it seems the album #2 will be a lot like Peril, with maybe a bit of Carcass thrown in to keep things interesting." 

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information? 

"I would say our facebook account is the fastest route as I run that personally. Will reply to everything people write in there, and as soon as I can. The feedback from the people listening to our music is really important. As a musician, you are often "too close" to your own work and cannot be fully objective with it. When people tell us what they really like in our music, it is a big help when writing the future stuff. So please, take a listen to our new album out and drop a line if you feel like it! It's all very much appreciated. Cheers!"

Jedinou pravou hudbou pro vyvolávání temných sil je ryzí, starý metal. O tom nemá nikdo pochyby. Představte si oltář ve zchátralém chrámu. Kdysi se zde pořádaly okultní seance. Na kamenném stole je ještě zaschlá krev a ze stínů se ozývá nářek obětí. Padlé modly, kult mrtvých. Atmosféra místa vás ihned pohltí. Stejně jako nové album brazilské legendy VULCANO. Ti se letos vracejí se svým shnilým metalem a touží po jediném. Roztrhat vás na kusy. Nutno rovnou dodat, že u mě se jim to daří opět na výbornou.

Jsem toho názoru, že metal musí mít kapela v srdci, musí být opravdová, uvěřitelná, musí mít svůj vlastní výraz a ksicht. Poslouchat novinku "Eye in Hell" je jako otevřít starou prašivou rakev. Když odtrhnete víko, spadnete rovnou do víru riffů, melodií a utopíte se během několika okamžiků. 



Je poměrně troufalé album "Eye in Hell" k někomu přirovnávat, ale v určitých bodech se nápady prolínají s těmi, které mívaly a mají skupiny jako POSSESSED, VENOM, RAZOR, INFERNAL MAJESTY, RAZOR, HOBB´S ANGEL OF DEATH. Zkrátka a dobře, VULCANO se stále drží toho, co umí nejlépe. Klasického energického metalu, který je syrovou a základní kombinací thrashe, blacku a death metalu. Brazilská legenda je přesně tím druhem kapely, po které nechci žádné stylové změny. Jsou vynikající v tom, co dělají. Poslech tak připomíná spíše okultní obřad pro vyvolávání temných sil, než obyčejnou desku. Dovedu si představit opuštěné místo, někde na kraji Sao Paula, o kterém se říká, že je prokleté. Tam někde museli VULCANO svoji novou desku složit a nahrát. Pánové jakoby citovali ze starých metalových učebnic, které kdysi sami sepsali. "Eye in Hell" je skvělým, ryzím a uvěřitelným albem pro všechny, kteří ještě nezapomněli, jak má znít pravý metal! Kult!


Asphyx says:

The only true music for evoking dark forces is pure old metal. No one has any doubts about this. Imagine an altar in a dilapidated temple. Occult sessions were held here years ago. There is still dried blood on the stone table, and from the shadows, the cry of victims is echoing. Fallen idols, the cult of the deads. The atmosphere of this place will engulf you immediately. Similar to the new album of Brazilian legend VULCANO. They are returning this year with their rotten metal and longing for only one thing. To tear you apart into small pieces! It should be added that in my case they are accomplishing.

I think the band must have the metal music in its heart, it must be real, believable, it must have its own expression and face. Listening to the new record "Eye in Hell" is like opening an old, scabby coffin. When you tear off the lid, you fall straight into a swirl of riffs, melodies, and you are going to drown in moments.

It is quite presumptuous to compare album "Eye in Hell" to other bands, but at some points, the ideas mingle with those that used to have bands like POSSESSED, VENOM, RAZOR, INFERNAL MAJESTY, HOBB'S ANGEL OF DEATH. In short, VULCANO still does what it knows the best. Classic energetic metal, which is a raw and basic combination of thrash, black and death metal. The Brazilian legend is exactly that kind of band, by which I don't expect any style changes. They are excellent at what they do. Listening thus reminds an occult ceremony for evoking dark forces rather than an ordinary record. I can imagine an abandoned place somewhere on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, about which is said that is cursed. There somewhere VULCANO had to compose and record their new album. Gentlemen seem to quote from old metal textbooks that they once wrote themselves. "Eye in Hell" is a great, honest and believable album for all who have not forgotten how the real metal should sound! Cult!
