A few questions - interview with death metal band from Italy - CHAOSPIRACY.

Answers by A. (bass player) and Z. (vocals and guitar player) from Chaospiracy.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

A.: Chaospiracy was born a couple of years ago from an idea of mine (bass) and Z. (vocals and guitar), driven by the desire to play raw no-bullshit Death Metal, straight to the poin with heavy riffing leading the way.... and a band where we could finally play together.

We’ve been longtime friends, but aside from a few collaborations, we had never actually played in the same band before. My personal background was from funeral and sludge doom scene as well as noise and drone music. Z., on the other hand, has always been a death metal guitarist.

Since we’re both OSDM fanatics — even though we come from very different musical backgrounds — we decided to form a power trio in the toxic wastelands of Northern Italy, together with the drummer of G., who is also doing some really cool stuff with a local Black Metal band called Black Raptus. So, Chaospiracy crafts a sound that fuses the primitive aggression and riffing of 90s death metal with the over-fuzzed attitude of sludge doom, inserting itself into the current new wave of filthy OSDM.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

A.: When we decided to record our debut EP, we already had very clear ideas about both how it should sound and the approach and process we wanted to follow.

On one hand, we wanted to keep a strong underground, almost DIY spirit, similar to what we had done in our previous experiences. On the other hand, we also wanted professional quality and solid technical competence.

So, knowing friends who have the right equipment and professional skills — and who are also deathsters who played in the underground metal and punk scene of 30 years ago— we got their help. Basically set up the recording sessions at home, and then completed everything at the studio for mixing and mastering.

We’re very satisfied with the final result, and we hope you — and the listeners — will enjoy it as well.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

A.: At the moment, this is the tape version for the EU market, released by the Italian label Unholy Domain Records, which pressed a first run of 100 copies.

It was released in two different versions/colors.

However, I can already share the news that a CD version will be released in January by Morbid Chapel Records from Poland.

Stay tuned for more details and info.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

A.: On this EP „Ingecting Grotesque Decay“, the lyrics were initially written by me in order to follow the imagery and the concept behind the moniker Chaospiracy, and then of course they were adapted and refined by Z., who had to sing them.

My imagery is deeply influenced by a kind of dark-fantasy literature from my youth, ranging from the Chaos of the Warhammer universe to the cosmology of Lovecraft’s Great Old Ones, and everything that surrounds that world. Are you ready for perverted gods, flesh muation and endless war? Simply, Infecting Grotesque Decay...a rotting world corrupted by Chaos...

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

A.: After a long and careful search, mainly done by me and Z. — since we’re both very passionate about the graphic and aesthetic side of Death Metal — we contacted Fred (Form Terror Growth) directly and asked if he would be up for doing our logo.

Having seen his previous work, we were confident he could deliver exactly what we had in mind — and that’s exactly what happened. We sent him some music, a few lyrics and some background info, and the logo came out fantastic.

As for the artwork, I usually take care of it personally, as it’s something I’ve been deeply into for a long time. After a lot of research, when I came across some drawings by Gorey Corey Tornlimbs, I immediately knew I had found the right way to represent the sick and decaying world of Chaospiracy.

I’m absolutely in love with that artwork — so sick!! Hopefully we’ll collaborate again in the future.

Obviously, the shift from print to exclusively digital tools has made everything much faster and most convenient to manage. So despite the nostalgia for the old school, we’re happy with these new ways. We both take care of promotion and managing our social media channels. The only thing that sometimes make me a bit skeptical is that these platforms often seem more focused on appearances than on substance and content. I put more trust in webzines and social pages or groups tha actually spread real content – infomation, music, gig and concrete stuff – rather than profiles full of useless or empty information made only for scrolling ora that end up looking like meme or jokes.... A desperate search for attention in what is supposed to be an extreme and underground scene... ironic, isn’t it?

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

A.: The choice of the label was very straightforward in this case as well.

Z. had the chance to meet Ale from Unholy Domain in person, and after talking with him it was clear that, beyond the label’s work — which we already knew and appreciated — the person behind it was the right one.

For our debut EP, our idea was to enter the OSDM scene with something honest and credible, made with a strong underground spirit, and for that reason we wanted to debut on tape.

After letting Ale listen to our material and meeting him face to face, both sides were happy to close the deal — and share a beer.

We’re very satisfied with how things turned out, and he immediately took our project to heart. He has basically become our first supporter in naturally developing the path toward new formats and markets — and maybe even a bigger label for the next release.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

A.: Me and Z. are the two „old guys“ in the band. We also grew up musically in the 1990s, so obviously with bands like Obituary, Death, Sepultura, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Gorefest, Carcass, and many others you all know well.

As time went on, each of us explored many different paths. Besides digging deeper into the filthier side of Death Metal — f.e. Autopsy being a huge personal influence for me — I was also strongly influenced by funeral doom (Mournful Congregation, Tiranny, Skepticism..) and sludge (EyeHateGod, Electric Wizard, Iron Monkey…).

Z.: Honestly, we’re really passionate about the current scene and this new wave of OSDM, which has undeniably influenced us. At the same time, we’re also collectors of physical material – vinyl, tapes, and merch – and feel a strong connection to the tangible side of the underground, not just the music but the whole surrounding imagery. I can also confirm what A. said, and I’d like to add that I started training at a young age on the thrash of Slayer, Metallica, and Overkill, before moving on to Meshuggah, who helped me develop my palm-muted strumming technique, which has stayed with me for many years now!

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

A.: When we produced our EP, the only label we sent the promo to was Unholy Domain Records, for the reasons we talked about before. And Honestly, we’re so happy with this debut, with how the tape turned out, the artwork, and the way it’s being received by the listebers.

Now that the tape is out, also thanks to Ale’s push, we’re letting other labels listen to the record in order to find new markets and formats for Infecting. In fact, a CD version will be released next year by the polish Morbid Chapel.

I won’t hide that, after talking with a few labels, there’s also been some interest in a future full-length.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

A.: In October, our debut EP was released, and we also had our live debut for the release party in Milan with Ashen Tomb and Diabolizer. For this, we have to thank Ale from Unholy Domain and Nicolò from Necrotheism Prod. We’re a “young band”, but from my previous experiences i can say that I love both festivals, especially the more underground ones that are truly connected to the old school scene, and club shows, where you can feel wet, sweaty sick mood of the old days.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

A.: For now, all I can say is that we’re working hard on new tracks and ideas, and we’re very excited about it. At the same time, we really want to promote the band and the EP live as much as possible… let’s see what happens.

Stay tuned. Stay sick. Stay Death.

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?
