Co jste dělali v letech 1983 až 1987? Třeba já jsem chodil na základní školu a osvícený bratranec mi nosil tajně nahrávky kapel jako JUDAS PRIEST, následně potom SODOM. Kreslil jsem jejich loga do sešitů a dostával za to od paní učitelky poznámky. O tom, že existuje kapela MANTAS a potom DEATH, jsem tehdy neměl ještě nejmenší tušení. Osobně jsem se dostal k hudbě Chucka Schuldinera až o mnoho let později. Byl jsem hlavně thrasher srdcem i duší a tak mě jako první zasáhlo až album "Human" v roce 1991.
Nutno ale také zmínit, že jsem vyrůstal v socialistickém bloku a nahrávky se k nám dostávaly mnohdy s velkým zpožděním. Přesto, nebo právě proto, mám v hlavě zafixováno, že na mistrovo dílo se nasahá, že je nejlepší takové, jak jej sám nahrál a vytvořil. Měl jsem tu čest jej vidět i naživo a musím říct, že jsem si po jeho smrti nedovedl příliš představit, že by někdo vzal jeho hudbu a začal ji znovu hrát. Přesto se poslední roky vyrojilo velké množství kapel, které se o to pokoušejí. Někdy se jim to daří, jindy méně, ale pokaždé je to nakonec jen revival. I když třeba dobře zahraný a produkovaný, jako v případě LEFT TO DIE.
Myslím si, že se fanoušci rozdělí na dva tábory. Někteří budou hltat cokoliv, co se pod hlavičkou DEATH (a jejich následovníků) vydá a druzí budou přeci jen skeptičtí. Nakonec jsem se rozhodl, že budu k novému albu přistupovat nezaujatě, nechám jej na sebe jen tak působit a uvidím, co se mnou udělá. Jména v sestavě jsou jistotou, že bude vše velmi dobře zahrané, že bude perfektně ošetřený zvuk, že se Harvey z EXHUMED a GRUESOME pokusí trefit do raných vokálů "Evil Chucka". Seděl jsem ve svém pokoji, dal jsem si pár piv a několik prvních setkání se mnou toho příliš nedělalo. A pak se to stalo. Každý další poslech mě bavilo "Initium Mortis" víc a víc. Prostě a jednoduše, užíval jsem si Chuckova génia a v závěru se mi vlastně způsob provedení, jakým jeho hudbu tihle pohrobci uchopili, líbí. Byl jsem nedávno na koncertě DEATH TO ALL. Bylo to skvělé, ale ne vynikající, přišlo mi to místy až moc chladné a profesorské. LEFT TO DIE někde v menším klubu budou určitě také dobrý zážitek. Pravdou je, že si člověk uvědomí, kolika cestami se Chuck dokázal vydat, jak byl skvělý skladatel. Beru tak album téhle kapely jako velmi dobře zahranou poctu, na kterou, když budu mít chuť, tak si ji určitě rád narvu do hlavy. Ony jsou ty skladby také hodně nasáklé thrashem, grindem, zkrátka dobou, kdy se styly zase tolik neřešily. A to se mi líbí. Pánové jdou až ke kořenům a dělají to přesvědčivě. V závěru asi nemá moc smysl filozofovat. Pokud jste měli rádi staré MANTAS/DEATH, myslím si, že budete přinejmenším spokojeni. Určitě to není nejlepší album dekády, ale to ani není účelem. A tak se zase jednou zavírám do svého pokoje, hrabu se ve starých deskách a občas, když mám chuť, tak si pouštím i "Initium Mortis". Album, které je velmi dobře zahranou poctou Evil Chuckovi! Návrat ke krvavým kořenům!

What were you doing between 1983 and 1987? For example, I was in elementary school, and my enlightened cousin would secretly bring me recordings of bands like JUDAS PRIEST, and later SODOM. I’d draw their logos in my notebooks and get notes from my teacher for it. Back then, I didn’t have the slightest idea that bands like MANTAS and later DEATH even existed. Personally, I didn’t discover Chuck Schuldiner’s music until many years later. I was a thrasher through and through, so the first album that really made an impact on me was “Human” in 1991.
It’s also worth mentioning, however, that I grew up in the Eastern Bloc, and recordings often reached us with a significant delay. Despite that or perhaps because of it I’m convinced that a master’s work should remain untouched, that it’s best exactly as he recorded and created it himself. I had the honor of seeing him perform live, and I have to say that after his death, I couldn’t really imagine anyone taking his music and starting to play it again. Yet in recent years, a large number of bands have sprung up that are attempting to do just that. Sometimes they succeed, other times less so, but in the end, it’s always just a revival. Even if it’s well-played and well produced, as in the case of LEFT TO DIE.
I think fans will be divided into two camps. Some will devour anything released under the DEATH banner (and by their followers), while others will remain skeptical. In the end, I decided to approach the new album with an open mind, just let it sink in, and see what effect it has on me. The names in the lineup guarantee that everything will be played very well, that the sound will be perfectly polished, and that Harvey from EXHUMED and GRUESOME will try to capture the early vocals of “Evil Chuck". I was sitting in my room, had a few beers, and the first few listens didn’t do much for me. And then it happened. With every subsequent listen, I enjoyed “Initium Mortis” more and more. Plain and simple, I was savoring Chuck’s genius, and in the end, I actually like the way these successors have interpreted his music. I recently went to a DEATH TO ALL concert. It was great, but not outstanding; at times, it felt a bit too cold and professorial to me. LEFT TO DIE, playing somewhere in a smaller club, will surely be a good experience as well. The truth is, you realize just how many different paths Chuck was able to take and what a great composer he was. I see this band’s album as a very well-played tribute that I’ll definitely be happy to blast when I’m in the mood. The songs are also heavily influenced by thrash, grind in short, a time when people didn’t worry so much about genres. And I like that. These guys go all the way back to the roots, and they do it convincingly. In the end, there’s probably not much point in philosophizing. If you liked the old MANTAS/DEATH, I think you’ll be at least satisfied. It’s certainly not the best album of the decade, but that’s not the point anyway. And so, once again, I lock myself in my room, rummage through my old records, and every now and then, when I feel like it, I put on “Initium Mortis”. An album that’s a very well-played tribute to Evil Chuck! A return to the bloody roots!
