Včera jsem se znovu vrátil ke skvělému dokumentu Helvete: Historien om norsk black metal (Hell: The History of Norwegian Black Metal) z roku 2020, abych si zopakoval, z jakých poměrů MAYHEM kdysi dávno vzešli. Propojení temných sklepení, syrové, mrazivé přírody, hudební jinakosti a talentu stvořilo v devadesátých letech nejen hudební, ale i vizuální a názorovou revoluci. Býval jsem tenkrát sice true death metalista a thrasher, ale samozřejmě jsem zásadní alba nejen této legendy zaznamenal.
K mnohým počinům jsem se vrátil po letech a některé jsem ocenil až v pozdějším věku. Mám samozřejmě, asi jako každý, i nahrávky, které moc nemusím a nezanechaly ve mě žádnou stopu. Letos ale považuji novinku za velmi povedenou. Naleznete v ní totiž úplně vše, co od téhle smečky chcete. Mrazivé melodie, jedovatý vokál, surové bicí i jakýsi shnilý odér, který máme všichni na norské scéně tolik rádi.
Skladby jsou napsány velmi zajímavě, nenudí a mají dlouhou trvanlivost. Dle mého skromného úsudku není nové album na jeden poslech a rychlé hodnocení. Chce čas, i při dalších společných setkáních objevíte spoustu nových pasáží, momentů a nuancí. MAYHEM nijak zbytečně neexperimentují, drží se toho, co umí nejlépe a sázka na jistotu jim víceméně vychází. Na nahrávce je i několik slabších momentů, ale vzhledem k tomu, jak dlouho je tahle kapela na scéně, tak to lze s klidem odpustit. Víte co, black metal byl vždycky o temných pocitech, o mrazu v kostech, o nekonečných toulkách v zimním lese i v záhrobí. Jak už jsem zmínil v úvodu, nejsem sice ortodoxní fanoušek, ale možná právě proto se mi novinka "Liturgy of Death" líbí natolik, že jsem s ní strávil spoustu času a pořád se k ní rád a často vracím. Pokaždé, když mám chuť na něco jedovatého, pokaždé, když se setmí a mraky jsou nízko, pokaždé, když jdu kolem kostela, pokaždé, když slyším ulhaná slova kněžích. Ano, Norové jsou stále v opozici proti všemu křesťanskému, uctívají sílu přírody a moc dobře vědí, že Satana můžete potkat na každém rohu. Pánové pekel čerpají ze své vlastní historie a jsou stále originální a sví. Vybrušují svůj styl k dokonalosti a i když si spousta z nás myslela, že se už nikam neposunou, tak si skromně myslím, že se tak pořád jemně stává. Abych to nějak shrnul. Pokud jste měli rádi tuhle kapelu v jejich nejsilnějších letech, mohla by se vám líbit i letošní deska. Nehledejte na ní šmouhy, ale užijte si ji jako já. Buďme rádi, že je oheň stále zapálen. Jasná a temná black metalová definice satanismu, smrti, misantropie, zla, lidského hnusu a nenávisti! Mrazivé album, které hoří zevnitř!

Yesterday, I revisited the excellent 2020 documentary Helvete: Historien om norsk black metal (Hell: The History of Norwegian Black Metal) to remind myself of the circumstances that gave rise to MAYHEM so long ago. The combination of dark cellars, raw, frosty nature, musical diversity, and talent created not only a musical revolution in the 1990s, but also a visual and ideological one. At the time, I was a true death metal and thrash metal fan, but of course I took note of the essential albums of this legend and others.
I returned to many of them years later, and some I only appreciated at a later age. Of course, like everyone else, I have recordings that I don't really like and that left no impression on me. This year, however, I consider the new album to be very successful. It has everything you could want from this band. Chilling melodies, venomous vocals, raw drums, and a kind of rotten smell that we all love so much on the Norwegian scene.
The songs are very interestingly written, never boring, and have a long shelf life. In my humble opinion, this new album is not something you can listen to once and quickly evaluate. It takes time, and even after multiple listens, you will discover many new passages, moments, and nuances. MAYHEM does not experiment unnecessarily, sticking to what they do best, and this safe bet more or less pays off. There are a few weaker moments on the record, but considering how long this band has been around, it's easy to forgive. You know what, black metal has always been about dark feelings, about the chill in your bones, about endless wanderings in the winter forest and in the afterlife. As I mentioned in the introduction, I'm not an orthodox fan, but maybe that's why I like the new album "Liturgy of Death" so much that I've spent a lot of time with it and still enjoy coming back to it often. Every time I feel like something poisonous, every time it gets dark and the clouds are low, every time I walk past a church, every time I hear the lying words of priests. Yes, Norwegians are still opposed to everything Christian, they worship the power of nature and know very well that you can meet Satan on every corner. The lords of hell draw on their own history and are still original and sharp. They hone their style to perfection, and even though many of us thought they couldn't get any better, I modestly believe that they are still gently evolving. To sum it up, if you liked this band in their heyday, you might like this year's album as well. Don't look for flaws, just enjoy it like I do. Let's be glad that the fire is still burning. A clear and dark black metal definition of Satanism, death, misanthropy, evil, human filth, and hatred! A frosty album that burns from within!
