Recenze/reivew - VINCENT CROWLEY - Anthology Of Horror (2024)

VINCENT CROWLEY - Anthology Of Horror
CD 2024, Hammerheart Records

Propojení starého death metalu, děsivých nálad, pradávného heavy kovu a doomové atmosféry, vás přenese do těch nejšílenějších nočních můr. Poslouchám novou desku "Anthology Of Horror" a připadám si jako v dobách, kdy jsme si mezi sebou půjčovali staré VHS kazety.

V hudbě je to hodně podobné. Také vám připadají nové skupiny i filmy příliš umělé a dokonalé? Raději volím mistra Hitchcocka a starý kov smrti. Neznám nic lepšího, než si pustit několik jeho snímků, přečíst si Psycho a potom si dát do hlavy novou desku těchto tmářů.

Asphyx says:

The worst horror movies aren't the ones that take place in cinemas, but the ones that are in our heads. After all, most good movies were inspired by harsh realities. The mysterious house on the cover of VINCENT CROWLEY's new album is so much like the home of Norman Bates, who loved to watch over his mother. The fusion of old death metal, eerie moods, ancient heavy metal and doom atmosphere will transport you to the craziest nightmares. I listen to the new album "Anthology Of Horror" and I feel like in the days when we used to borrow old VHS tapes from each other.

It's a lot like that in music. Do you also find new bands and films too artificial and perfect? I prefer the master Hitchcock and the old metal of death. I don't know anything better than to put on a few of his films, read Psycho and then put a new record by these obscurantists in my head. Everything is cold, dark, bloody. Suddenly everything connects and you see the flash of a knife in the dark when you go to the fridge at night. Or is it just a fantasy?

Everything is gnawed to the bone, the riffs are classic, traditional, very well written. Vincent Crowley (ACHERON) has capitalized on his years of experience and recorded with his colleagues a record that burns with a bright black flame. If you grew up on bands like CANDLEMASS, BLACK SABBATH, MERCYFUL FATE and gradually got to bands like VITAL REMAINS, POSSESSED, MASSACRE and other old school death metal bands, you will appreciate the new album "Anthology Of Horror". It's a very captivating, I wouldn't be afraid to write magical affair. While listening to it you will be on the thin line between harsh reality and a bad dream. You will be haunted by a serial killer, you will be dissected alive. It's like opening a Pandora's box full of ancient diseases. We all have secrets. Often very dark. The gentlemen have taken it and brought it to the surface. And they did it with the help of great music, with a massive and perfectly clear sound. It's only after a while that you realise you're standing in a bloody fog in an old, seemingly abandoned graveyard. The first riff hits and the undead begin to crawl out of their graves. Their faces will smile, but it won't be a pleasant smile. I like everything about it. The cover, the production, but most of all the large number of ideas and themes that completely engulfed me. Maybe it's because I have similar music in my blood, maybe it's because we have a similar musical history. But neither of them prevents me from enjoying everything properly. On the contrary, from the songs I feel a huge enthusiasm for the cause, for the dark ideas, for the music itself. All this is then underpinned by great talent. The worst horror movies aren't the ones that take place in cinemas, but the ones that are in our heads. Don't forget that! A freezing, terrifying horror symphony! Heavy doom death metal that makes ghosts come alive!

Recenze/review - SINISTRUM - Infernal Dawn (2024)

SINISTRUM - Infernal Dawn

Mám to takhle celý život. I tentokrát mi ukáží cestu.

Skladby v sobě mají velkou porci energie a nakumulovaného vzteku. Určitě to znáte. Trávíme spolu celou noc a nelze jinak, než vám novou desku doporučit. To vám podepíšu vlastní krví já, i všichni démoni.

Asphyx says:

I open the old rusty door. I had to get away, away from a wicked world full of malice and lies. I've been like this all my life. Music inspires me, calms me. I use it instead of expensive drugs. I go inside and walk among the graves. Ghosts begin to appear in the mist. We've known each other a long time. I've been recommended bands many times that I've listened to all my life. This time they'll show me the way. In the corner, by the cemetery wall, is an ancient tombstone. It says SINISTRUM. And somehow I know I'm going to like this record.

In fact, it's due to the excellent cover artwork by master Juanjo Castellano, as always, that I noticed the band. I immediately started listening to it and gradually discovered that it is a pack of all experienced musicians from bands like ABOMINANT, AEONS OF ECLIPSE, FORNICUS, BIHARGAM. Slowly I turn up the volume and an avalanche of bones, bad blood and old school thrash death metal comes pouring out of the speakers.

SINISTRUM are going at it sharply and uncompromisingly. It's a blast, just like it should be. But the dark melodies are not forgotten either. The songs have a big portion of energy and accumulated anger. Bones crack with pressure and coffin lids pop in morbid rhythms. "Infernal Dawn" is the band's first, debut album, and it succeeds on all counts. I really like the legible, massive and absolutely devastating sound that singer Scott Briggs is credited with. Great job! I'm sure you know it. You wake up in the morning and you know something is wrong. I need to get the bad thoughts out of my head. I pick up a hammer and I go to the sound of this record and I knock down the first wall I come across. Do you like MALEVOLENT CREATION, CANCER, DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED, HYPOCRISY? Then don't hesitate a moment. It's not only for all the old mangy dogs, but also for real fans of burial in the ground and real death in metal. Maybe one day I'll burn in hell, maybe one day I'll be burnt to ashes, but until that happens I'll be listening to albums like this over and over again. I exhume more and more graves to understand what happens when we die. But I'll never find out. I prefer to listen to records like "Infernal Dawn". I sway contentedly to the beat, dancing with the most beautiful zombies. We're spending the whole night together, and I can't help but recommend the new record to you. I'll sign it with my own blood, and so will all the demons. Razor-sharp riffs, beast vocals, drums that will blow your brains out. Excellent stuff! Sharp, devastating death thrash metal that will break every bone in your body! Hell has opened its gates!

Recenze/review - DYSSEBEIA - Garden of Stillborn Idols (2023)

DYSSEBEIA - Garden of Stillborn Idols

Představte si starý dům, temný a opuštěný, do kterého když vstoupíte, tak budete mít divný pocit. Začně vás mrazit v zádech a stíny se promění v přízraky. Podají vám ruku a pozvou vás dolů, do sklepa. Našlapujete opatrně a pod nohama křupají staré kosti.

Mám to takhle rád. Švýcaři jsou navíc muzikanti, kteří hrají i v dalších skvělých smečkách (STORTREGN, HYPOCRAS), takže lze novinku klidně označit vysokou známkou kvality. Progresivní death metal protkaný zajímavými a mocnými melodiemi! Symfonie z jiného světa!

Asphyx says:

Imagine an old house, dark and deserted, that when you enter, you get a strange feeling. You'll get chills and the shadows will turn into ghosts. They'll shake your hand and invite you down to the basement. You'll go with them, as if in a daze. You'll subconsciously know you're doing the right thing. You'll stop in front of the rusty door, and you'll have a lot of questions in your head. You take the handle, there's an eerie creak, and then darkness envelops you. You tread carefully, and old bones crunch underfoot. The sun at the end of the tunnel. Another world, another dimension, a place where only good and interesting music is played.

These were the thoughts that came to mind when I first heard the new debut album from Swiss maniacs DYSSEBEIA. They play death metal stained with black, with a lot of progressive passages. The music of this pack can't be classified in any clear way and that's a good thing. This is a band for all fans with a good imagination and an open mind.

I don't know if this happens to you too, but I often have strange dreams. I have them with music I like. Every time I meet a new band that I gradually grow to like, I get to sleep too. It's usually proof to me that the record has done well. I have to feel the power and energy from the songs, I have to be tapping to the beat and nodding my head in unison. And that's pretty much what happened with "Garden of Stillborn Idols" every time I put the album in my player. The recording is very well sonically treated and the motif on the cover is undoubtedly interesting. But it's mostly the music, the individual motifs, the ideas, the record is like some kind of monolith that falls on you and crushes you. Sure, you have to keep an open mind and at least some amount of imagination, but then when everything settles down, it gets under your skin for sure. I like it that way. Just sit back, listen, let the music affect me, and if I like it, write a few words about it. DYSSEBEIA are exactly the kind of band that appeals to everyone who likes to think, to discover new things. Because if you listen attentively and calmly, even after a long time you will discover new and new corners. Moreover, the Swiss are musicians who also play in other great packs (STORTREGN, HYPOCRAS), so the novelty can be safely marked with a high mark of quality. For myself, I can sign it with my own blood. When you stop in front of the rusty door, there will be a lot of questions flying around in your head. You take the handle, there's an eerie creak and then darkness envelops you. You'll tread carefully, and old bones will crunch under your feet. The sun at the end of the tunnel. Another dimension, a place where only good and interesting music is played. Progressive death metal with interesting and powerful melodies! A symphony from another world!

Cigáro pomalu dohořívá a sklenice s whiskey je ještě plná. Mám všeho plné zuby, štve mě celý svět, práce, lidi kolem mě. Sedím v zaplivaném baru a s nikým se nebavím. Dávno už vím, že do téhle doby nepatřím. Mám rád jinou muziku, ženský, filmy. Vypiju alkohol na ex a objednám si další. Už nemám moc jasnou hlavu, ale to mi nebrání v tom, dojít ke starému jukeboxu a pustit si něco pro sebe. Po nějak době přemýšlení vybírám novou desku švédských maniaků WARHAWK. Chvíli stojím a dostávám se do stavu, kdy se mi chce tančit.

Netrvá to dlouho a přidají se i ostatní. Krásný holky, co nikdy nebudu mít, všichni si rozpustíme vlasy a řveme texty spolu s kapelou.

Pokaždé mě hodilo do pohody, uklidnilo moji mysl, nakoplo mě a nabilo energií. To není ani v dnešní době málo, co myslíte? Heavy metalová jízda přímo do pekla! Rock´n´roll až za hrob!

Asphyx says:

The cigar slowly burns out and the whiskey glass is still full. I'm fed up with the world, my job, the people around me. I'm sitting in a dingy bar and I'm not talking to anybody. I've known for a long time that I don't belong in this era. I like other music, women, movies. I'll drink alcohol on my ex and order another. I'm not very clear headed anymore, but that doesn't stop me from walking over to the old jukebox and playing something for myself. After some time of thinking, I pick up the new album from Swedish maniacs WARHAWK. I stand for a while and get into a state where I want to dance.

It doesn't take long for the others to join in. Beautiful girls I'll never have, we all let our hair down and scream the lyrics along with the band. My bones don't hurt anymore, I feel alive again. The music gets into my veins right away. I grew up on it, heavy metal and rock 'n' roll. I party till I fall down and fall asleep on the floor.

As one of my equally cursed friends says, this is music from a time when the world was still right. Played from the heart. If you fancy a trip back to the golden era when the glorious and essential MOTORHEAD ruled the world, don't hesitate a moment. But it's not just the influence of the Lemmy gang that is evident, there are also references to rock from the seventies. But this is not necessary to dissect, I write this to give you an idea. Rather, I'll tell you where I enjoyed the album the most. Firstly, at work, when I got away from everyone around me and a blissful calm and smile spread across my face. Next, in the car, when the empty highway in front of me and the volume at full blast was a joy. I like the way the Swedes approach music. To me they are more believable, more true and more honest than any contemporary famous band. I swear to you on that, and I'll sign it with my own blood. And lest I forget. From the autumn, when I received the CD for review, until today, I sat at home every Friday and got ready to go out. I listened to "Dambuster" over and over again. Each time it threw me for a loop, calmed my mind, kicked me up a notch and energized me. That's not even enough these days, don't you think? It's music for old dogs who are like me. I usually write about more extreme music, but WARHAWK just got me. They cursed me and took me back in time to when I started with metal and rock. The cigar is slowly burning out and the whiskey glass is still full. I'm fed up with the world, the job, the people around me. I'm sitting in a dingy bar and I'm not talking to anybody. I've known for a long time that I don't belong in this era. I like other music, women, movies. I'll drink alcohol on my ex and order another. Heavy metal ride straight to hell! Rock 'n' roll to the grave!

Recenze/review - DIABYS - Portals of Annihilation (2023)

DIABYS - Portals of Annihilation
CD 2023, vlastní vydání

for english please scroll down

V hudbě to platí o to víc. Přesvědčila mě až jména v bookletu a první poslech.

Zpěvák Max Phelps je sám o sobě zárukou kvality. Potvrdil to v DEFEATED SANITY, CYNIC a samozřejmě DEATH DTA. A to vše s rodokmenem DEATH.

Masivní a surový. Mám to takhle rád. Doporučuji podávat v noci, chladu a nejlépe několik metrů pod zemí. Nezbývá mi nic jiného, než vám desku doporučit. Tohle album vám rozdrásá obličej do krve, zničí vás a vy za to budete moc rádi. Progresivní, technický death metal, který ctí pradávné kořeny a stane se vaším vlastním stínem!

Asphyx says:

Sometimes I feel like my own shadow. I look at myself as I get up in the morning, as I go to work, as I rest, as I perform an endless series of tasks. But what's the point of it all? Where am I going? I guess like everyone, I'm changing with age, gaining experience. In music, this is even more true. In the past, bands like DIABYS would just pass by unnoticed. But a friend of mine from the other side of the world pointed them out to me. He said it was the album of the year for him. I had no idea, I didn't know. I was only convinced by the names in the booklet and the first listen.

Singer Max Phelps is a guarantee of quality in his own right. He confirmed it in DEFEATED SANITY, CYNIC and of course DEATH DTA. He teamed up with equally experienced musicians and rather unobtrusively they recorded that is definitely worth your attention. Everything was then composed by Michael Dorosz. It is a sophisticated, very varied and well composed death metal with a lot of technical and progressive elements. And all this with the DEATH pedigree.

Listening to the debut album "Portals of Annihilation" I'm suddenly not my own shadow, but I have the raw feeling that I'm really alive. The music is very urgent, restless, with that mysterious air, if you know what I mean. The mastering was done by Johannes Grossman and I have to say that he did a perfect job. The sound is clear and lively at the same time. Massive and raw. I like it that way. I'm old school and I like the fact that this pack builds on traditional, classic foundations, but gradually develops them, adds to them and at the same time keeps its own face. I've always had to listen intently to listen. I could never listen to a record just as a backdrop. It always absorbed me in the end and didn't let me rest for a moment. I imagined some ancient monster, a beast that slept for years in a cave. It woke up to the sound of this recording and came to tear us apart. He may not even be of this world. The songs have a great drive and power in them, a kind of rough-hewn energy that I don't think can be taught. You have to have it in you, you have to believe in what you're playing. And that's what DIABYS can do 100%. I'm kicking myself that I've only just joined the band, because the album was released last April. But I think it doesn't matter in the end. The important thing is that I enjoy listening to "Portals of Annihilation" and I like coming back to it. This is a matter for all music gourmets. I recommend serving it at night, cold and preferably several feet underground. I have no choice but to recommend the album to you. This album will rip your face to shreds, it will destroy you and you will be so glad you did. Progressive, technical death metal that honors its ancient roots and becomes your own shadow!

Většinou mi přijde obyčejný a nezajímavý.

IN MOURNING, AT THE GATES, DARK TRANQUILLITY. A dělá to velmi elegantně, zkušeně. Novinka má úderný a čitelný zvuk, mlhavý obal a hlavně spoustu neotřelých nápadů.

Asphyx says:

All your life you've been searching for answers to fundamental questions. You follow blind paths, admire false prophets. You read beautiful books, visit galleries full of paintings that strike you. In the end, you still find that the only justice and certainty that exist is death. When you figure that out, you're suddenly humble and at peace with yourself and the world. You only listen to music you like. It's like visiting another dimension when it happens. When you meet records that get into your veins, into your subconscious.

I've been very picky about melodic death metal for many years. Mostly I find it ordinary and uninteresting. But then I came across the new record from Spain's ETERNAL STORM and suddenly I felt like the band had me pinned to the wall. Sharp riffs, dark melodic motifs, lots of interesting progressive passages. Grandeur, majesty, a sense of gloomy moods. That's what their new album "A Giant Bound to Fall" is.

Stylistically, this pack is between the boundaries set by bands like INSOMNIUM, IN MOURNING, AT THE GATES, DARK TRANQUILLITY. And they do it in a very elegant, experienced way. I like their attitude, their enthusiasm, the energy that can be felt in all the songs. It's like leaves from the trees are flying around, like I'm looking at a melting river. Yes, listening in the woods, among the hundred year old trees, was the most rewarding for me. I walked many miles through the winter landscape with this recording and every time I came home I would sit down and open a good book. Somehow the music of the Spanish always connected with the story. No, the new album wasn't just an ordinary backdrop, but rather it got into my blood enough to become a part of me. I floated, I fell into the depths, I burned, only to rise from the ashes each time. In fact, it all worked. The novelty has a punchy and clear sound, a foggy cover and, above all, a lot of novel ideas. If I like a record a lot, I prefer to listen to it rather than write about it. If there is a mutual transmission between me and the band, if I fully understand their artistic expression, I tend to be lost and not want to do anything but listen and enjoy. I'm like a star wanderer, a dancer, stepping on sharp shards. Many similes come to mind, but none of them can accurately express and define all the moods they contain. Better to really listen to the excerpts, gradually form an opinion, and then see. For myself, I can only write one thing. I have not heard such a good piece in this style for a long time. Let yourself enjoy. Urgent, majestic melodic death metal! You will float on the waves of eternity!

Recenze/review - FETID ZOMBIE - Where Worms Crawl (2024)

FETID ZOMBIE - Where Worms Crawl
EP (digital, cassette) 2024, Morbid Visions Music

for english please scroll down

A všichni odvedli vynikající práci. Prašivý, hnilobný death metal s podmanivě temnou a chladnou atmosférou! Dokonalá esence ozvěn ze starých katakomb!

Asphyx says:

You're sitting by an open casket, wondering when you last saw each other. Judging by the state of the tissues and the decaying bones, it's been a while. You're getting more and more beautiful, you say, and she smiles at you and responds in kind. Worms crawl out of her mouth and eye sockets and you know full well she's telling the truth. Love beyond the grave. Death will never separate us. Come with me, she'll tell you. I have something to show you. You will descend deep underground. To the beyond, to the other world. You hold her hand and you don't mind that she has no skin or flesh. She hands you FETID ZOMBIE's new EP, "Where Worms Crawl", and you know you're gonna be stuck with her. Forever and ever, amen!

I'm a big fan of this band, and of Mark Riddick (reviews of older albums and a great interview are linked at the bottom of the article). I follow his musical and painting work. He's long since earned a literal cult status. The new stuff is a morbid continuation of things past. All it took was the first few notes and I immediately felt like I was locked in a moldy old dungeon. This is exactly the kind of death metal with a cold and dark atmosphere that runs through my veins.

Mark is two years younger than me so I hope you can see that we both grew up on similar bands. All the denim jackets, the cassette tapes, the endless discussions about music with friends. That's when our passion for the afterlife was born. But unlike me, this maniac is blessed with all kinds of talent. His paintings and drawings need not be mentioned, they are always excellent and stylish. But he can also write songs that glow, burn and chill at the same time. Every time I meet some true 90s fans, we all agree that what we like most about death metal outside of the darkness is that the musicians playing for us are from the heart. And that is exactly the case with FETID ZOMBIE. The new EP is an insidious poison that will slowly seep into your veins. The songs will cause your body to fail many times. The atmosphere is truly magical, mysterious, cruel and ugly. There is a lot of reliance on melodies. A lot of great guests also contributed to the recording (see also the list below the article). And they all did an excellent job. I imagine I'm going to dig up my own zombie, as in the opening of today's review, and we'll go underground together to see this pack in concert. I've been thinking lately that the world is going in a strange direction. More and more often I go back to the catacombs and listen to records like "Where Worms Crawl". I sift through the dust between my fingers that I will one day turn into. Maybe I'm already undead. I don't know. But what I do know is that the new EP has been excellent again. The sound, the cover, the production, everything is raw, real, pure. Like a freshly exhumed grave. Dusty, rotten death metal with a captivatingly dark and cold atmosphere! The perfect essence of echoes from the old catacombs!

Interview - APPARITION - A rotten, moldy, ancient death metal experience!

Interview with death metal band from Spain - APPARITION.

Answered Eduardo (bass, vocals) and Iván (guitars), thank you!

Ave APPARITION! Greetings to the Spanish underground. I hope everything is fine with you. It should be because this year you have released a first long-play full-length album in your band's career. I have to admit it has literally blown my mind. It is dark, energic and as if it cuts by the sharp edge of the knife. I can hear from the record you did a really good job and you added a big portion of the talent, too. How do you perceive the new album in comparison to the previous demo? Where did you want to move and in what are these two records different?

Eduardo: The demo includes the first three songs we ever wrote for Apparition. Two of them were also re-recorded for the album. I don’t think there’s a big change stylewise, we try to have some variety within the songs, but the songs of the demo and the rest of the songs of the album were basically written during the same timespan. The main difference is the production, as the demo was mostly self-recorded while the album has a 100% professional recording.

Iván: Hello, first of all thanks for your interest in the band, we’re glad to read you liked the album.

Like Edu said, the main difference between the demo and the full-length is the sound, since when we recorded the demo these eight songs were already written and six of them had already been properly rehearsed at our rehearsal place (at least on a basic structure level, new arrangements and details were added later).

The idea of recording that first demo was to create a presentation for the band and show the people what we were working on, that’s why we always had in mind to re-record a couple of songs with a better production since the demo was self-recorded (except for the drums) and, well, even if we didn’t have much experience on that field, the result wasn’t bad at all.

„Fear the Apparition Apparition“ includes all attributes of good death. For me personally, it represents the record, which I really like to listen to. How did you produce it? How look the writing process of new material in the case of APPARITION?

Eduardo: The writing process is quite simple, Iván writes all the riffs and structures at home and creates some drum patterns. Then we rehearse them together, do some minor changes if necessary, and once the final song structure is clear I think about the vocal lines and write the lyrics.

I found out that Javi Feléz is the recording engineer. I have to confirm that the sound literally kills. It keeps making me turn up the volume on the hi-fi tower. You have given you a sound that is harsh, raw and at the same time dark and animalistic. How did you find working with him and why him? What studio did you record in and how did everything go?

Eduardo: Yes, Javi was the main responsible for the sound and production of the album. We initially recorded the drums here in Zaragoza at Producciones Sin/Con Pasiones, with Juan Miguel Sánchez behind the desk. Those raw recordings were sent to Javi to be cleaned and edited and then we used them to record all guitars, bass and vocals at our rehearsal place. Guitars and bass were reamped by Javi Félez at Moontower Studios in Terrassa and all the mixing and mastering was done there as well.

Iván: All three members of Apparition had already worked with Javi Félez with different bands or projects so he was our first option since the beginning to record an album. I totally agree with you, he achieved a crushing sound. Javi is a very good engineer and it’s very easy to work with him.

An integral part and a kind of extra bonus for fans today is the CD. You have released it on F.D.A. Records and it comes with a mysterious cover. It was written by Markus Vesper How did you choose the theme and how does it relate to the music on the release?

Eduardo: We knew Markus Vesper for his great work with Denial of God and Manilla Road among many others and he visually represented that old horror vibe we were looking for. We gave him some rough indications and he did a great job. It’s not related to one particular song but since different Apparition songs are inspired by ghost stories and haunted houses, it could be related to songs such as “A Haunting Reflection” or “Apparition”.

I have been wandering the underground for over thirty years and I still go to Spain for music with certainty. I think we have a similar nature and taste when it comes to metal. I like your bands a lot and I monitor your scene carefully. Maybe I envy you a little, because we only have a few death metal bands that are worth it. How do you explain that death metal are doing so well in your country? How do you perceive your scene, fans, labels?

Eduardo: There are many cool death metal bands, for sure! Oniricous (new album kills), Necrophiliac, Purulent Remains, Sanctuarium, Leprophiliac, Orthodoxy, Intolerance, Devotion… I don’t think the scene is that big, but there’s been some younger people joining in for the last 5 years or so, which is a good thing. There are some great labels too (Memento Mori, Black Seed, Down With The Most High, and many more) but they are mostly run by the usual suspects who have been involved in the underground for decades, I don’t see younger people getting that involved on that, I guess it’s seen like an unrewarding task compared to being in a band. Same could be said for gig promoting, but I do see some new people here and there trying to arrange shows in their cities and that’s a cool thing. It’s not easy to have gigs in Spain since distances are really big compared to other countries and we are kind of isolated from the rest of Europe, but there are some individuals, associations and fanclubs taking the risk so hats off to them.

You play death metal influenced by, among other things, the old school. Today, the band can't avoid comparisons, but I would like to know how the idea to start APPARITION was born, who was and is your metal idol? Where do you want to move your band? Are you attracted to large foreign festivals, for example, are you willing to go on tour with a more famous band?

Eduardo: Apparition was born as a bunch of old friends aiming to play the music they love. I don’t think we will ever tour with a famous band, or even tour at all due to job obligations, but spare shows here and there and of course foreign festivals are always welcome (we have just been announced at Tones of Decay in Prague next September!). We are currently working on that to promote the new album.

Iván: If you take a look at the credits of the Fear The Apparition booklet you can read a big part of our influences that in one way or another served as a starting point and motivation to create and play our sound and style. It’s not that much about individual idols, but more about worshiping particular releases of the most ancient, savage and diabolical death and thrash metal.

When I started my blog six years ago, I had a vision that I would try to support bands that are not so much popular, or they are lost in underground. To let the world knows about them. I think I'm doing quite well, at least according to the responses. How do you approach the promotion of your music? Do you rely upon the label or do you send the CDs for various reviews by yourself? For example, I buy albums that I really enjoy. What about you? Are you also fans who often support your colleagues? Do you go to concerts?

Eduardo: Promotion is mostly run by the labels and their PR agencies, but we also do our part and try to spread the word by contacting the underground media and spreading thousands of printed flyers the old brutal way. We are avid listeners of new and old bands and have lots of music in all physical formats. We also go to plenty of concerts locally, nationally and abroad. It’s the only way!

On the one hand, today the new band has a lot of opportunities to make themselves more known, but on the other hand, there are a huge number of groups and the fans are getting lost in this big metal sea. A lot of people just download mp3s from the internet and instead of to visit the concert they prefer to spit poisonous saliva on Facebook. How do modern technologies affect you as APPARITION? What do you think about downloading music, google metalists, streaming music, etc.?

Eduardo: There’s definitely a saturation of bands nowadays. We don’t really overthink about that and try to do our thing. Modern technologies are fine if you use them properly, social media is a good way to get the people to know about any upcoming shows, releases or any band news really fast. We are on Spotify, YouTube or Bandcamp if people want to listen to our music that way, it’s alright, I’m more of a traditional listener of physical albums but such are the times.

Iván: For Apparition our priority is and shall forever be physical format over digital, but it’s 2024 and things have changed. We are aware of that so we also have to adapt to new technologies. I recently had to buy a new car and now I’ve to use Spotify while driving since the new car has no CD player hahaha! At home I always listen to vinyl (for the most part), CDs and tapes.

I like to ask the musicians what death metal means to them. How would they define it, whether it is more the philosophy and lifestyle thing for them or "just" relaxation? What does it mean for you? How do you perceive and experience it?

Eduardo: We try to avoid the spirit's collapse as bands used to do. We never relax!

Finally, a classic but important question. What is APPARITION planning in the upcoming months? Where can we see you at the stage?

Eduardo: We are playing on March 9th in Murcia (w/ Cancer, Orthodoxy, Sanctuarium, Evilact) and April 13th in Madrid at the Extreme Metal Record Fair (w/ Oniricous, Necrophiliac, Omission). We should also be playing on at least a couple of foreign festivals this summer / autumn, including Tones of Decay in Prague as answered in a previous question, and another one to be confirmed. More dates should be announced soon!

Iván: Besides trying to promote the new album and playing it live as much as we can, we will also combine it with rehearsing new songs.

Thank you so much for the interview. I wish a lot of success to the new album and let the number of your fans expand as much as possible. I will look forward to seeing you somewhere live again. I wish you a lot of success both musically and personally. I'm going to push „Fear the Apparition Apparition“ into my head again!

Eduardo: Play it loud! Thanks a lot for the interview Jakub, see you at Tones of Decay this year!

Iván: By the time you read this, the European edition of our album will be available on both vinyl and CD. Don’t stop fearing the Apparition! Arghhhhhh! Cheers!
