Interview with death metal band from Norway - BLOOD RED THRONE. Answered Daniel Olaisen.

Ave BLOOD RED THRONE! Your album will be released on July 15, 2016 and it is called “Union of Flesh and Machine”. I listen to it for a while now and I consider it as a great album. It is dark, sharp and uncompromising. Are you satisfied with the result?

Absolutely. This album got everything you would expect from BRT, with a slightly old school vibe to it. The songs are great and the production is top notch. No BRT fan should be disappointed by this one for sure.

The cover for your new album was draw by Jobert Mello. To tell you the truth I haven´t seen for a while a cover which would show what happens on the CD that well. However, we have made an interview together recently and you have mentioned that you would like to continue in cooperation with Rafael Tavares. So, why the change? It seems to me that Jobert Mello shows an absolute apocalypse on the cover. How did you chose a theme for the new album?

I totally loved Tavares work on the self-titled. But, when announcing the idea for Union of Flesh and Machine, Jobert came up with the best sketch indeed and we noticed from his website he was a professional. You’re perfectly right, the front cover really describes the idea of Martin, our producer, who wrote all the lyrics for this album. It’s man vs technology. Can we manage to control it? Will it take over completely? It deals with mankind’s stupidity and our ignorance.

Last time you told me that you write song the same way for 15 years. This means that you do your demos at home, that you like a certain structure in your songs. And you can hear that on the new album. The guitar work is a really varied, there are layers and a lots of them and you can clearly hear the bass. Did you made the new album in the same way? Did Ivan Gujic also add some of his ideas?

Well, 15 years ago, I took my riffs to the rehearsal place and practised them with my drummer. But the last 6-7 years, I’ve recorded guitars on all my albums in my own home studio. The new album is no exception. It’s always about good riffs and putting them together nicely. Ivan contributed with 3 songs this time. It should be easy to distinguish his songs cause he writes very differently from me. But it works great and makes the album even more interesting!

Daniel, your guitar style is unmistakable. BLOOD RED THRONE is a recognizable among others thanks to that. I wonder, how often and how long do you practice? When did you began to play guitar and who were your biggest influences? Our website reads a lot of musicians and they would appreciate to know what type of guitar do you play and what system you use.

Well, thanks. That’s kinda what I was hoping for. To have my own style and sound. You might not call BRT’s music original and innovative, but think about, are there actually that many bands sounding like us? Anyway, I picked up the guitar in 1992 and practised like hell for years. My biggest influence then and still today is Joe Satriani. Believe it or not, you can hear a lot of him in my playing in various bands/projects. In death metal, Chuck Schuldiner soon became my big inspiration. Simply a mastermind and founder of his very own death metal style. I have my own custom made BRT guitar by Halo Guitars. 7 stringer with DiMarzio X2N pick up. I use Line 6 Pod Farm in my studio, but live it varies. Sometimes I use the amps at the venue and sometimes I bring my Line 6 Uber Metal distortion pedal. Besides that I have the usual noise gate, tuner, wireless system and delay pedal.

Since the previous album (which has the same name) in 2013 your vocalist is Yngve “Bolt” Christiansen. He was great the last time, however now he literally overcome. It is another clear hallmark of the band. When he sings in a death metal position I somehow think that I understand where is it come from. However, on the album there is also the black metal “croak”. Is that “Bolt” also? I have to admit that on this album I just eats every vocal from his hand! It must be terribly difficult. Does he take some singing lessons or something? Does he take care of his voice?

Bolt is a great singer indeed. He can mix between the deep growls to the high pitch screaming. Of course he does all the vocals on the album. I don’t think he ever did some lessons, but he treats his voice with alcohol, haha.

Did Bolt write any lyrics on the new album as last time? What they should express? Personally, I consider the lyrics in death metal as an issue and that is actually one of the reasons I buy and original CDs – I just think that without it the listeners don´t have a complex view.

To make a long history short, Bolt was out of the band for a year. So, we actually recorded the album with Martin, our producer, on vocals and he even did some shows with us. He wrote all the lyrics and is responsible for the concept behind this album. It’s about everything getting more robotized. Even man himself. Maybe one day things have become so advanced and out of control that we can’t stop it from taking over.

According to Metal Archives which I do not believe that much I noticed that there is a comeback of drummer Frreddy Bolsø in BLOOD RED THRONE. Does it mean that he is a permanent member of the band? And does he also performs live? I think that he made this new album very special thanks to his work. His work is just perfect. Strong, dynamic and it adds more cruelty to the album.

Freddy is our original drummer and he made his return in 2013 when playing some live shows with us. When Emil decided to leave the band, it was quite easy to welcome back Freddy as a permanent member again. He’s a way different drummer than Emil and suits BRT perfect!

In 2014 you told me “Believe it or not, but publishers were interested in us more last year than today. Of course a part of it is caused by industry but I am still shocked that no publisher in Norway exalt some bigger death metal band.” Is it still the same? Last time you published your album by American Sevared Records. This year you did it with British Candelight Records and Spinefarm Records. Why the change?

There are too many bands these days. CD’s don’t sell anymore. Labels don’t make money. Sure, BRT has been around for almost 20 years, but labels are not interested if they can’t make money on you. Of course there are some underground labels doing it for the passion. Anyway, it was time for us to step it up again. Sevared Records is very small and underground, but they treated us fair. Nevertheless, when Candlelight Records showed their interest, the decision was easy. They are a professional label with tons of experience and a great network. Spinefarm Records is a sub-label to Universal Records and they bought Candlelight Records some months ago.

Lately, I hear more opinions that it is no longer meaningful to published CDs because people just download music on the internet. The sold of CDs is just very low. What do you think? Haven´t you thought about selling digital format via Bandcamp, etc.? Personally, I´m and old school but there are a lot of bands which do that.

CD sales are lower for sure these days. Luckily, many metalheads still enjoy buying almost at shows and get their hard copy signed by the band. But I totally understand the easiness, time and money-issue to go digital for sure. I’ve collected CD’s since 1993, so I can’t stop now, haha. I have a friend who literally worships your band and he asked me where to buy your shirts. Apparently he searched the Internet but there was nothing. So I have to ask you which I do. J Where can people buy BLOOD RED THRONE merchandise?  I know that the easiest thing is to go on a concert but what about fans from countries where you don´t play?

When I searched the internet for some songs from new album, the video with new song “Revocation of Humankind” was prohibited a few times. Have anyone told you why? At the time when there is no problem to find some footage with real cutting of heads is available, that is something which puzzles me – on your video was nothing wrong.

I looked at your Facebook page and it looks like you play more on festivals. Does it mean that you like festivals rather than clubs? I got this set up differently, for me I like more to be in a club and be closer to the band. I find it more personal and there are only true fans on these concerts. But that is my point of view. How do you see it?

Yes, both please, hehe! We just wanna play everything and meet our fans and have good time!

And I have to ask – are you going to support the new album with a tour? And if so, do you want to see the Czech Republic? Do you want to do a tour with some big band?

We were supposed to tour Asia in July, but it’s postponed. We will support the album anyway. Headliner or support tours. Bring em’. We’ll do it all!

Death metal is not the style when there are money flying in the air. It´s often about renunciation, irreversible investments, concerts where there are just a few fans. Daniel, BLOOD RED THRONE will celebrate 20 years anniversary of its existence. That is the time for retrospection. Have you ever wanted to dissolve the band? What is the force that drives you and your band to be ahead?

I’m not in this for the money. I have a life-long passion for death metal. Running a band is ups and downs. I’ve released a bunch of albums, toured most of world and had a good time with the fans. Money is just a bonus.

Due to your social networks pictures you seem like “very cheerful” band. Does it mean that you go well with each other and you enjoy concerts? Do you go to a pub together? I think that holding a band with 5 different people must be very difficult. 

We don’t hang out besides the band related stuff. We all live in different cities and myself have plenty of other stuff to do, hehe. We work well on tour and we get enough time to party and get tired of each other.

Potkal jsem démona. Šli jsme spolu na pivo a já měl pocit, že se známe odjakživa. Byl sice průhledný a připadalo mu zcela normální, že někdo hází lidské ostatky prasatům, ale znáte to, v hospodě se semele ledacos. Pak jsme se rozešli. Vrávoral jsem domů, komíhal se ve svitu pouličních lamp a nakonec uléhal v poloze, ve které nejsnáze usínají opilci. Ve snu jsem se ocitl na staré, skoro opuštěné farmě, kde můj nový kamarád, tentokrát převtělený ve šklebícího se sadistu, mučil své oběti, rval z nich kusy masa a když vypustily duši, jejich ostatky skončily v prasečáku. Umíral jsem strachy, přivázaný a čekající na stejný osud. Probudil jsem se zpocený a vyděšený. Zařekl jsem se, že amerického hudebního surovce Shauna LaCanneho a jeho PUTRID PILE nebudu nějakou dobu poslouchat.

Jenže pak jsem viděl v televizi večerní zprávy a chtělo se mi zvracet. Novinka "Paraphiliac Perversions" mi najednou přišla přijatelnější, než realita a tak jsem se zavřel do pokoje a začal opět rozmlouvat s démony. Shaun je šílenec, který táhne tu káru plnou syrového masa sám. Bez pomoci, s urputností a nadšením. Jeho riffy ve stylu DEVOURMENT, INSIDIOUS DECREPANCY, SKINLESS, VIRAL LOAD, PROSTITUTE DISFIGUREMENT, AMPUTATED, LIVIDITY, FLESHGRIND GORGASM a spousty dalších na mě zabírají. Nejsou originální, ani nijak vlastně "zajímavé", ale v tomhle podání si je nechám líbit vždy a rád. Doslova mě fascinuje určitá syrovost, uvěřitelnost, kterou z noviny cítím. Baví mě ji hrozně a často poslouchat. Jsem opravdu na starých opuštěných jatkách, hned vedle zmíněné farmy. Je to pořádný výmaz mé hlavy, brutálně death metalová očista, surová a ošklivá ze své podstaty. Jednoduchá, mnohdy předvídatelná, ale také návyková a přitažlivá jako příběhy masových vrahů.

Je to stejně zvláštní, jak se ze zdánlivě obyčejné a nebál bych se říct i rutině "nudné" desky stane kus čehosi, co vám doslova krvácí v rukách. Přitom Shaun nepředvádí nic světoborného. On vlastně pokaždé jen přijde, nasází tam ty svoje morbidní riffy, zahuhlá k tomu pár prasáren a je vymalováno. Je to starý, zkušený řezník, který moc dobře ví, jak na nás, nebohé posluchače brutálního death metalu. Líbí se mi, že si jede tou svou nehostinnou cestou a nenechal se strhnout do dnešní moderní technické a plastové produkce. Možná právě proto si dávám do hlavy tyhle ostré, rezavé hřeby s až masochistickou chutí. Novinka má tlak, sílu, masakrující účinek. A o to nám jde především, no nemám pravdu? Viděl bych to do budoucna na spoustu zcela nových nočních můr. S letošním albem jsem spokojený a přiznám se, že na něj dostávám chuť čím dál častěji. 

sumarizace:

Novinka amerických PUTRID PILE je krutá, zlá a ošklivá. Morbidní melodie se střídají s ještě nechutnějšími motivy. Tohle je brutální death metal v jeho klasické podobě. Syrový, masakrující. Z desky cítím obrovský tlak a energii. Možná se občas Mr. Shaun nevyhne určité monotónnosti, ale to tak nějak k tomuto stylu patří, jako k hrobníkovi lopata. Užívám si houpavé melodie, chrlím spolu se zpěvákem chorobné texty. Jsem u poslechu po lokty ponořen v krvi a spolu s PUTRID PILE provádím pořádně nechutnou pitvu. Pokud se potřebujete odreagovat od dnešního ošklivého světa, neznám nic lepšího, než si narvat do hlavy „Paraphiliac Perversions“. Co na tom, že zde ožívají mrtvoly a pánům chirurgům všichni na operačním sále zemřou? Tak to má být a tak je tomu v brutálním death metalu správně. Letošní album vás smete jako tsunami. Berte a nebo nechte být! Skvělá řeznická práce!

The new album by American PUTRID PILE is cruel, bad and ugly. Morbid melodies are changed by more disgusting motives. This is a brutal death metal in its classic form. Raw, cruel. I feel the huge pressure and energy from this album. There is some monotonous passages, however this is something typical for this style like a shovel for a grave digger. I enjoy their melodies and I have to sing the lyrics with the singer. During the listening of this album I´m lying in the blood and with the PUTRID PILE I´m doing a disgusting necroscopy. If you have to clean yourself from today´s ugly world I don´t know better way how to do it than listen to the “Paraphiliac Perversions”. Who cares that death bodies are coming back to live and every person who is being operated by surgeon will die? This is how it´s supposed to be in the real brutal death metal. This album is going to take you like a tsunami. Take it or leave it! Amazing butcher work!

Mám strach. Najednou, z ničeho nic. Určitě jste to taky někdy zažili. Na člověka spadne splín a vlastně bez důvodu má sto chutí se někam zavřít a přečkat to. Je jako raněné zvíře, které se odebere lízat si své rány do úkrytu. Musím zmizet, být neviditelný. Vymanit se ze své skořápky a podívat se na všechno s nadhledem. Uniknout z tohohle prokletého světa a srovnat si vše v hlavě. Dobré také bývá vyzkoušet nějakou novou muziku. Co byste řekli na kanadské maniaky BEGRIME EXEMIOUS? Troufám si tvrdit, že jejich novinka „The Enslavement Conquest“ je ke kýženému očištění vaší hlavy více než vhodná. Kombinace old school death metalu a tradičního blacku je přesně tím, co právě potřebuji. Žádné zbytečně komplikované postupy, spíše se sází na jednoduchost, přímočarost a to jsou jak známo věci, které dělají mému uchu velmi dobře. Pokud tedy máte chuť, pojďte se mnou navštívit jeden hřbitov v Kanadě, kde se to hemží jen samými příznivci staré plesnivé metalové školy.

Pánové hrají již od roku 2005, mají na svém kontě zatím tři dlouhohrající alba, plus několik demonahrávek, splitek a EP. Hraje se tady v rytmu třeba takových REVENGE, VASTUM, BLASPHEMY, AXIS OF ADVANCE, s jasným přihlédnutím ke klasice ve stylu VENOM. Nahrávka má grády, ten správný staro-školský feeling i drive. Je to přesně ten druh riffů a motivů, které musí dělat dobře snad každému hudebnímu archeologovi. Někdy jsou sice songy možná až zbytečně dlouhé, občas dokonce monotónní, ale jsme tu hlavně proto, abychom dali odpočinout svým mozkovým závitům. A to splňují Kanaďané na sto procent. Je sice nutné se oprostit od dnešních zvukových zvěrstev, zapomenout na krásné lesklé promo fotky i na pozlátko současného metalu. Tady se hraje ještě poctivě, hezky od podlahy, s neskutečnou silou a razancí. A nic na tom nemění jasný fakt, že všechno už bylo složeno i řečeno. Já cítím určitou jiskru, kus jasně hmatatelné hniloby, která dělá dobrý metal ještě lepším.

Beru na sebe zimní bundu, pevné boty a nezbytná sluchátka na uši. Vyrážím do lesů, stoupám na kopce a relaxuji. Tady, v chrámu zvaném příroda, se zdají být BEGRIME EXEMIOUS nejlepší. Jako by se spojil určitý rustikální přístup s vůní smůly borovic. Black metalová temnota oživuje stíny stromů, death metalové spodky zase vytahují na světlo dávno zapomenuté příběhy lovců i jejich obětí. Cítíte to také? Z hlavy, těla i úst mi uniká veškerá negativní energie. Jsem jako buddhista v tom nejpříjemnějším rozpoložení. Medituju pomocí death metalu. Čerpám z hudby tolik potřebnou energii. Jsem zastáncem toho, že běžný, náročný pracovní den člověka doslova vysaje. Je potřeba se někde dobít. Odtrhnout se od elektrické energie a být zase alespoň na chvilku „vyrovnaný“. Nechat na sebe vše jen tak působit, užívat si. Říkávají, že se ze svých procházek vracívám usměvavý a veselý. Je to díky tichu, samotě, která je následně proložena dobrým smrtícím kovem. BEGRIME EXEMIOUS toho budiž jasným důkazem.

BEGRIME EXEMIOUS letos vydali desku, která vás provede těmi nejtemnějšími zákoutími podzemí. Je černá, plná energie a zahraná se starým poctivým feelingem. Nápady mi připomínají náladu opuštěných hřbitovů. Zvuk alba je plesnivý, jako trouchnivé víko do rakve. Líbí se mi přístup kapely k muzice. Je hodně podobný jako ten můj. Upřímný, syrový, sází se na dobré nápady a motivy. Měl bych snad jen jedinou výtku. Některé songy jsou moc dlouhé. To je ale jen drobnost, která mi nemůže pokazit celkový dojem. Album „The Enslavement Conquest“ je ostré jako rezavý nůž. Zajede vám pomalu do břicha a zanechá po sobě pořádně krvavou spoušť. Poslech si vyloženě užívám, jednotlivé skladby si přehrávám neustále dokola. Podle mě se jedná přesně o ten druh hudby pro staré posluchače, který vás přesvědčí o tom, že peklo doopravdy existuje. Black death metalová nahrávka, která působí jako rychlý jed! Skvěle!

BEGRIME EXEMIOUS published an album this year which will take you through the darkest corners of underground. It is black, full of energy and played with an old straight feeling. The ideas reminds me of the mood of abandoned graveyards. The sound of this album is mouldy like a rotten coffin cover. I like the music attitude of this band. It is very similar to mine. Hones, raw, they work with good ideas and motives. There is just one thing. Some of the songs are just too long. However, that is just a one little thing which cannot change my feelings towards this album. The album “The Enslavement Conquest” is very sharp like a rusty knife. It will go through your stomach, slowly and it will leave a giant bloody mess. I enjoy the listening very much. I play every song in my music player again and again. For me, this is the exact kind of music for old listeners and it will make you think that the Hell is real. Black death metal record which works like a quick poison! Great!

THE FOG – Perpetual Blackness

Potkával jsem ho každý den. Vždycky ráno, cestou do práce. Potom večer, když jsem běhával za blikání pouličních lamp. Vypadal desítky let stále stejně. Byl neměnný, byl součástí běžných věcí. I když jsme se neznali, věděl jsem o něm, jako víte o oblíbené věci, kterou se vám nechce vyhodit. Působil jako bezdomovec, ale chodil vždy čistý a upravený. Jednoho dne mě takhle k večeru, kousek nad městem oslovil: „Taky čekáš, až přijdou?“ Tvářil jsem se chvilku hodně nechápavě a pak mi to docvaklo. Tak nějak automaticky, jako to mají nastavené lidé, kteří jsou naladěni na stejných vlnách. Podíval se na mě, pokynul rukou a beze slov jsme se vydali nahoru do lesa. Zavedl mě na malou mýtinu, kde byl opuštěný betonový kryt. „Tady jsou, vždycky před půlnocí vylézají ven“: pronesl do ticha borovic. Potom zmizel. A já najednou viděl zástupy nemrtvých, jak vylézají do noci. Upřené obličeje, hezky srovnaní, ve dvojicích, jako nějací vojáci, jdoucí do boje. Otřásl jsem se zimou a probudil se doma v posteli.

Na tenhle sen jsem si mnohokrát při poslechu novinky německých death doomařů s příhodným názvem THE FOG. Ti hrají hezky postaru, plesnivě, přesně tak, jak se mi to poslední dobou líbí nejvíc. Mám čím dál tím víc období, kdy se k podobným prašivinám rád vracím, znovu je otáčím v ruce i přehrávači a pouštím si je nakonec častěji, než propagovaná slavná jména. Možná už je to určité prokletí, ale nemůžu si pomoct. Mě se líbí všechny ty nihilistické nálady, ten chlad a pobublávající síla, které zde cítím. Někdo by mohl namítnout, že všechno tohle jsme už slyšeli u AUTOPSY, DOOM SNAKE CULT, případně u starých doomových kapel (že by dávná dema PARADISE LOST?). Je to samozřejmě tak. Výrazové prostředky i celkové vyznění je víceméně stejné. Jenže mně se v tomhle hájemství líbí. Odsoudit by bylo tak lehké, ale neudělám to. Na rozdíl od jiných ve mně probouzejí pánové se svoji tvorbou určité temně laděné pocity, jejich hudba mě nenechává klidným a svým způsobem mě zvláštně uklidňuje.

Mezi proudem nemrtvých, přicházejících na tento svět je možno spatřit dvojice, které spáchaly kdysi v dávných dobách společnou sebevraždu. Nemohly unést tíhu tehdejšího světa a tak se rukou společnou rozhodly opustit realitu a ponořit se do nicoty. Napadá mě, co by asi dělaly, kdyby se měly proplétat současností. Možná by je ta komplikovanost, „přeinformovanost“ a lidská špína šokovaly a ukončily by své mladé životy ještě dřív. Je to zvláštní, ale i takové myšlenky mi pokaždé vytanou na mysli, když poslouchám prvotinu THE FOG. Myslím si totiž, že donekonečna, po částech rozebírat jejich hudbu snad ani vlastně nejde. Svým způsobem je to „jen“ klasický prašivý a obyčený death doom metal. Od ostatních ho odlišuje snad jen to, že mě neskutečně baví jej poslouchat. Riffy jsou zde jednoduché, opakující se stejnou jistotou, jako se otáčí Země. Víc vám vlastně ani nedokážu napsat, zbytek jsou totiž vzájemně propojené emoce a ty jak známo, jdou hrozně špatně popsat. Vytvářejí v mé hlavě výše zmíněné obrazy. Dodávat nic dalšího snad netřeba.

Německý death doom metal v podání THE FOG je hodně syrovým kouskem potravy. Připomíná mi opuštěnou náladu horského hřbitova, kde za noci vylézají na povrch nemrtví. Inspirace slavnými kapelami devadesátých let je sice patrná v každé skladbě, ale myslím, že to nikomu vadit nebude. Jako celek je totiž prvotina jasným důkazem toho, že smrt v muzice existuje. Undergroundový přístup, syrový a starý zvuk, hlas připomínající řvoucí bestii. Takoví jsou THE FOG na svém prvním albu. Až budete odcházet, zavřete za sebou víka od rakví, chce se mi při poslechu křičet do noci! Tahle deska se mi dostávala do krve pomalu. Kapela mi připomínala našeptávače, po jehož slovech vám uhnije hlava. Studená death doomové album, které je těžké, jako mlha nad opuštěným hrobem. Skvělá hrobnická práce!

German death doom metal by THE FOG is very raw piece of flash. It reminds me of mountain graveyard’s abandoned mood – undead are crawling up to the ground. Although you can hear the 90ths bands inspiration in every song, I don´t think it is a problem. As a whole their first album is the proof that you can find death in music. Underground attitude, raw and old sound, voice which sounds like roaring beast. That is THE FOG on their first album. Close the covers of coffins when you are leaving. I want to scream into the dark when I listen to this album! This record was difficult to get into my blood at first. The band reminded me of intriguer which makes your head damp off with his words. Cold death metal album which is heavy like a fog upon an abandoned grave. Great sexton´s work!

Ave SLAUGHTERDAY! Nedávno jste vydali dosud čerstvou novinku „Laws of the Occult“. Jsem z ní doslova nadšen. Jaké na ní máte ohlasy, jak ji vnímají fanoušci a co hudební kritici?

Díky! Doteď jsou všechny odezvy na album skvělé! Neobjevila se zatím ani jedna recenze, která by nám připadala nefér, nebo o nás mluvila negativně.

Jakým způsobem u SLAUGHTERDAY vnikají nové skladby? Jak probíhá samotný proces tvorby nového materiálu? Kdo je autorem hudby?

Napsat tuhle nahrávku byl velice přirozený proces. Všechny skladby byly napsány během dvou let. Nebyl na nás žádný nátlak při psaní a mohli jsme si vzít tolik času, kolik jsme potřebovali k dokončení alba. Psaní písní je pokaždé stejné: Jednou týdně se sejdeme ve zkušebně, abychom si zahráli a vyzkoušeli určité části, hledáme správné patterny bicích k rifům a dáváme dohromady všechny kousky. Když je skladba hotová, tak nahráváme živou zkušební verzi s bubny a jedním rytmem kytary. Potom přidávám trošku masa na kosti tím, že nahraju další kytarové tracky a basy pomocí jednoduchého domácího nahrávače. Nakonec Bernd nahraje vokály a song je hotov. A na konci máme vlastně docela dobrou verzi toho, jak bude song znít, až bude nahraný ve studiu. Navíc je to dobrý způsob, jak přijít na to, zda píseň vůbec funguje, nebo jestli potřebuje jakékoli změny. Ačkoli dnešní moderní technologie nabízí různé možnosti pro psaní písní a nahrávání hudby, pořád se držíme naší cesty a hrajeme si hudbu postaru ve zkušebně.

Skvělý je zvuk celé nahrávky. Je temný, studený a ostrý zároveň. V jakém studiu jste album nahrávali? Mluvili jste jako kapela do výsledného zvuku, masteringu?

Jako vždy jsme nahrávali album v soundlodge studiu s Jörgem Ukenem nedaleko našeho města. Je to jeden z nejlepších producentů v Německu a nám blízký přítel už asi 25 let. Samozřejmě všechno rozhodujeme společně, ale Jörg ví moc dobře, co dělá. Není potřeba mu koukat přes rameno celou dobu.

Kdo je autorem textů a o čem pojednávají? Kde pro témata berete inspiraci?

Jak jsem již psal, texty píše Bernd. Je velice ovlivněn H.P. Lovecraftovými příběhy. Ani ne tak příběhy inspirované Cthulhu, ale spíše těmi staršími hororovými příběhy.

Vždycky jste měli úžasné obaly svých desek. Zakládáte si hodně na tom, jak má album, cover vypadat? Kdo je autorem obalu novinky „Laws of the Occult“?

Opět náš obal dělal Mark Cooper. Podle mě je tohle album jako celek jedno umělecké dílo a obal tak musel sedět k celému albu. Musel přenést na lidi určitou náladu. Další přísady dodal Thomas Westphal. Je to náš dobrý kamarád a pracoval už i s Deserted Fear a Massacra.

Všude je uváděno, že členové kapely SLAUGTERDAY jste jen dva. Jens Finger a Bernd Reiners. Na některých fotkách je vás ale o hodně víc. Jak si to mám vysvětlit? To je sestava pro koncerty?

Přesně! Na začátku jsme neplánovali, že budeme v této kapele dva. Ale po první zkoušce nám bylo jasné, že to tak prostě musí být. Oba máme zkušenosti z pěti členných kapel a musím uznat, že takhle je všechno jednodušší. Bernd a já máme stejné nápady o tom, jak má Slaughterday znít. S veškerým respektem musím uznat, že kdybychom hráli v sestavě, jako hrajeme na živých koncertech, bylo by to o dost složitější. Navíc, všichni mají svoje kapely, ve kterých mohou projevit svoji kreativitu.

Hrajete typický, klasický starý death metal. Nikdy jste z téhle cesty neuhnuli, jste „ortodoxní“. Osobně je to jeden z důvodů, proč se mi vaše tvorba tolik líbí, ale nelákalo tě někdy zkusit hrát něco trošku jiného, nějak tvorbu SLAUGHTERDAY ozvláštnit?

Ne, Slaughterday znamená Death Metal. Pokud bychom někdy chtěli dělat něco jiného, určitě to nebude pod jménem Slaughterday. Tuhle muziku hrajeme celý život a nemyslím si, že to budeme měnit.

Často slýchávám na koncertech v Čechách, jak lidé nechodí, jaká je malá návštěvnost. Zajímalo by mě, jakou máte vy zkušenost z Německa? Pro nás jste velká země se spoustou kapel, promotérů. Jezdí k vám často skupiny, které naší malou zemi na turné vynechají. Chodí se u vás na death metalové koncerty? Máte raději kluby nebo větší festivaly?

To záleží na kapele a na místě. Menší kluby mají své výhody – intimnější vztah s publikem, které je nadšenější. Festivaly většinou bývají dobře organizované a jako kapela se dostaneme k většímu publiku, které by se jinak neukázalo.

V současné době si většina lidí nová alba stahuje z internetu a používá jen jeho digitální podobu. Jak vidíš tuhle problematiku ty? Zajímal by mě tvůj pohled jako muzikanta.

No, pokud se jedná o ilegální stahování, je to jenom krádež. Sám si všechna alba kupuji ve fyzické formě: LPčka, nebo CDčka. Pro mě je album mistrovským dílem se svým obalem, textem, atd. Ale chápu, že někdo raději hudbu stahuje, protože je to jednodušší a pohodlnější…taky to doma nezabírá tolik místa, haha.

V poslední době začíná spousta mladých kapel znovu hrát „old school death metal“. Většině to moc nejde, ale pár nových, slušných kapel, které pochopily, o čem to je, se najde. Máš nějakou oblíbenou, u které si myslíš, že má na to, „oživit staré časy“?

Existuje mnoho kapel, které vznikly v posledních několika letech. Zmíním jen pár: Morbo z Itálie, Reptilian z Norska nebo Exhumation z Indonésie...

Jsou nějaké desky, které tě v poslední době oslovily?

Uf, to je těžká otázka protože jsem za poslední dobu slyšet hodně alb…Hmm, asi Grave Miasma, Interment a Deströyer 666 jsou moje oblíbená.

Znáš, posloucháš nějaké kapely z České republiky?

Samozřejmě! Master´s Hammer jsou skvělí. Mám rád Krabathor a Hypnos. Bruno a Pegas jsou úžasní kluci. Byl jsem s nimi na šňůře po Čechách asi před 10 lety.

Co chystají SLAUGHTERDAY v nejbližších měsících?

Budeme hrát na několika letních festivalech a budeme dál psát písničky.

Ave SLAUGHTERDAY! Recently you have published a fresh new album „Laws of the Occult“.  I have to say I love it! How is the response of fans, critics?

Thanks! Until now the response to the album is great! There is not one review that we consider as being unfair or in any way bad for us.

How does SLAUGHTERDAY compose? How the process of making a new album works? Who is the author of music?

It was a very natural process to write this record. All the songs were written within two years. We didn’t have any pressure to finish the songs and took as much time as necessary to do all the arrangements. The songwriting process is always the same: We meet at our rehearsal room once a week to play and try out certain parts, find the right drum patterns to the riffs and to put fitting pieces together. When a song is finished we record a live rehearsal version with just the drums and one rhythm guitar. After that I add some flesh to the bones by recording the other guitar tracks and the bass by using a simple home recording tool. Finally Bernd does the vocals to finish the song. So in the end we have a complete rehearsal version of the song which gives us a good impression of how it could sound in the studio. In addition it’s a good way to find out if the song really works or if it still needs some changes. Although modern technology offers a lot of new possibilities to write and record music, we still like the old fashioned way of playing live in the rehearsal room.

I really like the sound of the whole album. It is dark, cold and sharp at the same time. In which studio did you record? Did you talk about the final sound and mastering as a band?

As always we recorded the album at the soundlodge studio with Jörg Uken near our hometown. He is probably one of the best producers in Germany and a close friend since I know him for more than 25 years now. Of course we decide everything together, but Jörg knows what he is doing, there is no need to watch his fingers all the time.

Who is the author of lyrics and what are those lyrics about? Where do you find inspiration?

As mentioned before Bernd writes all the lyrics. He is very much influenced by H.P.Lovecrafts Horror stories. Not so much the Cthulhu-based ones, but the old school horror stories.

You have always had a great covers for your albums. Do you take a special care about how the album cover should look like? Who is the author of the new album´s cover “Laws of the Occult?”

Once again it was Mark Cooper who did the artwork. We In my opinion an album as a whole is a piece of art, so the cover has to fit to the music and has to transport a certain vibe. Also Thomas Westphal did some additional artwork. He is a good friend of us and has already worked with Deserted Fear and Massacra.

It is said that in your band SLAUGTERDAY are only two members. Jens Finger and Bernd Reiners. However, there is more of you in some pictures. What does it mean? Is that a concert team?

Yes! In the beginning we didn´t plan on being a two-man project, but after the first rehearsals it became clear to us that it has to be like that. Both of us have made experiences in a 5 piece band and I must admit that everything is much easier now. Bernd and me have the same kind of idea, how Slaughterday has to sound like. With every respect to our live line-up, but things would be a lot harder. Besides, they all have there own bands in which they can be creative.

You play classic, typical old death metal. You have always played this music, you are “orthodox”. Personally, for me that is the reason why I like your music so much. However, have you ever wanted to try something different? To change something with SLAUGHTERDAY?

No, Slaughterday stands for Death Metal. If we ever want to do something different it will certainly not be under the name Slaughterday. We play this kind of music our whole lives now and I don't think that it will change.

In the Czech Republic, there is a low attendance in concerts – at least I have heard that. I want to know what your experiences from Germany are. For us you are a big country with a lot of bands, promoters. You have a lot of concerts by bands which often skip the Czech Republic. Do people go to death metal concerts in your country?  Do you prefer smaller clubs or bigger festivals?

That depends on the bands and the location. Small clubs have the advantage of having a more intimate and mostly more enthusiastic audience. Festivals are often well organized and as a band you are able to reach more people that otherwise would not show up.

Nowadays, people download new albums on the Internet and they just use the digital forms. What do you think about this problem? I am interested on your view as a musician.

Well, if it´s an illegal download it´s nothing else than theft. I myself buy all the albums in a physical form: LP or CD. I consider an album as a piece of art with the cover, the lyrics and all that. But I can understand some people who prefer downloads since it's a lot easier and comfortable and you need less space in your home for all that, haha.

Nowadays, a lot of young bands begin to play the “old school death metal”. Some of them are not very successful, however there are some good new bands which figured out what is this music about. Do you have any favourite band which can bring those “old good days” back to life?

There are many bands that came out in the last few years. Just to mention a few: Morbo from Italy, Reptilian from Norway or Exhumation from Indonesia...

Are there any albums which you like from a past few months?

Puh, that´s a difficult question, because I got loads of albums in the last months... Hmm, I guess Grave Miasma, Interment and Deströyer 666 are my favourites.

Do you know and listen some Czech bands?

Of course! Master´s Hammer are great and I liked Krabathor and Hypnos. Bruno and Pegas are very cool guys. I went on tour with them through the Czech Republic about 10 years ago.

What are SLAUGHTERDAY´s plans for the next few months?

We will play some shows like the summer breeze festival and will continue writing songs
