Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play , etc.?

Temple of Void is a death/doom band from Detroit. We formed in the darkness of winter in 2012. Our music is a window into another world. One of horror. One of the supernatural. We take old school death metal riffing and blend it with atmospheric doom. That is the Temple.


Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

We keep everything close to home. We work out of Detroit. Our studio of choice is fittingly called “Mt. Doom.” Clyde Wilson is the knob-twiddler. He captured the onslaught and tried his best not to get crushed under the weight of The Riff. He’s our brother in Doom. 

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

400 color vinyl, 100 black, 1000 cds, 100 tapes, infinite downloads. 

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

Our esteemed vocalist, Mike Erdody, pens all our lyrics. He draws on a myriad reference points to concoct his stories. Sometimes he references classic literature, sometimes classic cinema, and sometimes it’s his own stories he’s putting down on paper. Whatever he does though, is his own interpretation and unique point of view. Every track is like a short story in a paperback horror anthology. That’s our approach to Temple of Void. 


Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important? 

I’m a Creative Director by trade, so it’s natural for me to handle our logo and overall presentation. We contract artists to paint or illustrate for us sometimes, but overall I do the majority of it. Mike is a very talented artist so we use his drawings. We try and keep it in-house as much as possible. Brent and I both handle social media and PR. 

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

Shadow Kingdom signed us for a couple record deal. Hell’s Headbangers chipped in and co-released the LP this time around.


Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

I can’t say we idolize anybody. That’s not how we really look at things. We’re influenced by the likes of Asphyx, Bolt Thrower, October Tide, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, early Opeth, etc. 

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best? 

We try to keep it quality over quantity so we’ve only played about 30 gigs in our existence thus far. We don’t want to be a commodity you can see any weekend. We’re curating our gigs more carefully these days. Fests are always a lot of fun. ShadowWoods was one of the best. We were camping there in the woods and got to play with our friends in Cemetery Filth, Acid Witch and Tombs. Also, playing the Maryland Deathfest pre-show was killer. We were direct support for our brothers in Ruinous. Our favorite show to date was probably direct support for Black Dahlia Murder in Detroit. Huge show. Our first time with our fog machines and own lights. Great stage and sound. 


What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

We’re a selfish lot. We’re only interested in writing, recording and playing music that’s personally inspirational and cathartic to the five of us. If we dig what we’re doing then that’s truly all that counts. If others like what we do that’s a bonus. But it’s never a driving force for what we do. We’ll see what the future holds. We already have a couple more releases scheduled. We’re currently writing for them and expect to record at the end of the year. We’ll focus on album three after that. I’m sure a trip to Europe is on the horizon very soon…

 Znesvětili mé tělo, zničili mou mysl a zavřeli mě do staré špinavé kobky. Hniji zde zaživa, zazděn a zneuctěn. Prý jsem se rouhal nesprávným směrem a vyznával temné síly. Žil jsem dlouhá léta ve stínu a věřil jen sám v sebe. Těším se, až si zatančím se svojí smrtí, až přejdu na druhou stranu a budu do skonání světa poslouchat novou desku dánských maniaků UNDERGANG.

 Dánové letos vydali album, které vás přenese po časové ose o spoustu let zpět. Z reproduktorů na mě začali vylézat shnilí červi, mé tělo i mysl se začaly rozpadat a v pokoji kapala ze stropu zkažená krev. Exhumoval jsem své tělo, uložené kdysi v devadesátých letech do hromadného death metalového hrobu, abych spolu s UNDERGANG blahořečil pravý, nefalšovaný, reálný smrtící kov. Svět zase jednou hoří spravedlivým plamenem smrti! 


UNDERGANG na svém letošním počinu opět velebí klasický záhrobní death metal ve stylu ROTTREVORE, DISMA, FUNEBRARUM, ABHORRENCE, INCANTATION, OBITUARY, PESTILENCE, BOLT THROWER a spousty dalších temných věrozvěstů. Na rakvích znovu nadskakují víka, rozpadají se prašivá těla nemrtvých. Přátelé, troufám si tvrdit, že Dánové patří k jedněm z nejlepších, co se snaží držet vlajku starého death metalu hrdě vztyčenou. Měl jsem tu čest i naživo a byli skvělí. Stejně jako na "Misantropologi". Album v sobě obsahuje tajemnou formuli pro vyvolávání zlých sil, nutno zmínit i velmi dobrý zvuk a vokál. Trojice válečníků jakoby pomocí své hudby ničila vše živé i neživé. Nahrávka se pro mě stala jednou z nejhranějších tento měsíc a plně vystihuje veškeré záhrobní rituály, které se odehrávají na hřbitovech po setmění. Vynikající starodávný death metal, zahraný s hnilobou v srdci!

They desecrated my body, destroyed my mind and they locked me into an old dirty cell. I decay here alive, walled and dishonoured. They told me I blasphemed the wrong direction and confessing the dark forces. I have lived in the shadows for many years and believed only in myself. I am looking forward to dance with my death, to go to the other side and listen to the new album by Danish maniacs UNDERGANG.

Those Danes released an album which will take you many years back. There are worms climbing from the speakers. My body and my mind have started to fall apart and the blood tapped from the ceiling. I exhumed my body which was once in the 90s putted into the mass death metal grave to unite with UNDERGANG and bless the real death metal. The world is once again burning with the right flame of death!

UNDERGANG blessed the classic death metal in the style of ROTTREVORE, DISMA, FUNEBRARUM, ABHORRENCE, INCANTATION, OBITUARY, PESTILENCE, BOLT THROWER and many other dark messengers. The lids of coffins popped up again, the dead bodies decay. Friends, I dare to say that the Danes are one of the best who try to hold the death metal flag proudly. I hear them live and it was amazing. Just like on “Misantropologi”. The album contains a mysterious formula for evoking evil forces, including very good sound and vocals. The trio of warriors destroys everything alive and inanimate with their music. This record became one of the most played in my collection during this month and it fully describes all the gravest rituals that take place in the cemeteries after dark. Outstanding ancient death metal, played with rot in their hearts!

Na trůn usedl další bastard, aby ničil postupně lidský rod. Raději jsme unikali po večerech na onen svět, abychom si pročistili mysl pravým švédským death metalem. Bylo nám v záhrobí lépe, než v dnešní realitě. Poslouchali jsme stále dokola nové album německých LIFELESS.

Pánové ctí staré death metalové pořádky bezezbytku. Jsou ledově melodičtí, ostře nekompromisní a zároveň ničiví. Novinka už při prvním poslechu připomíná tanec na hrobech našich předků. Máte chuť na severský death metal? Máte rádi smrt uhranutím? Tak neváhejte a tuhle desku si pořiďte.



"The Occult Mastery" je albem, které odsýpá jako valící se lavina. Zároveň v sobě obsahuje mrazivé motivy vytažené odněkud ze švédských hřbitovů. LIFELESS nejsou ničím noví, ani překvapiví, ale jejich tvorba je přesvědčivá a uvěřitelná. Zvukově dobře ošetřená nahrávka nechává vzpomenout na staré dobré devadesáté roky, kdy světu vládly kapely jako ENTRAILS, DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED. Němci navíc přidávají svoji vlastní tvář. Líbí se mi chlad a staroba, které z desky cítím, líbí se mi provedení. Občas se skupina sice neubrání až příliš dlouhému přemýšlení a některým skladbám by slušel větší tlak, ale to berte jen jako povzdychnutí starého zmlsaného death metalisty. Album si užívám, rád jej pouštím do svého pokoje i mysli. LIFELESS vydali devět songů, ostrých jako břitva. Velmi dobrá deska, která zmrazí vaši duši!

There is another bastard on the throne to destroy the human race. We rather escaped to the other world during nights to clear our minds with some real Swedish death metal. We felt better in the beyond world than in the reality. We listen to the new album by German LIFELESS over and over again.

Those gentlemen honour the old death metal orders without rest. They are icy melodic, sharply rigid and devastating. The new album feels like dance on graves of our ancestors. Do you want to listen to some Nordic death metal? Do you like death by bewitch? They do not hesitate and buy this album.


“The Occult Mastery” is an album which goes like an avalanche. At the same time is has some cold motives drawn from Swedish cemeteries. LIFELESS are not extraordinary or new, they do not surprise but their music is so real and convincing. The album has good sound and it reminds you the good old 90s when there were the bands like ENTRAILS, DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED. Those German also added their own form. I like the coldness, oldness which you can feel from the album. There are some too long thoughts and some songs would sound better with more pressure. But that is just a comment from an old death metal fan. I enjoy this album and I like to put this music in my soul. LIFELESS released nine songs which are sharp as a knife. Very good album which will freeze your soul!

Ave MEMORIAM! Vaši letošní novinku „For the Fallen“ poslouchám pořád dokola a „nemůžu se jí zbavit“! Myslím, že se opravdu povedla. Jak to vidíš s odstupem ty? Změnil bys něco? Jak vůbec reagují na skladby fanoušci? A co recenze, kritiky?

S reakcemi, které se k nám dostávají z celého světa jsme opravdu spokojeni. Samozřejmě tady existuje pár kritiků, kterým se to nelíbí, protože to není jako Bolt Thrower nebo Benediction, ale nemůžeš se zavděčit každému a našim záměrem nikdy nebylo vytvořit album, které by znělo stejně jako Bolt Thrower nebo Benediction. S Memoriam se snažíme vytvořit náš vlastní zvuk a identitu.


Pod parádním obalem vaší desky je podepsán Dan Seagrave. Jak jste motiv na album vlastně vybírali? Slyšel Dan pro inspiraci vaše nové album? Osobně jsem letos na death metalovém CD zatím neviděl lepší obraz.

Z obalu jsme naprosto nadšení. Dan vytvořil fantastické umělecké dílo z malé představy, kterou jsme mu dali. Poslali jsme mu dema, které jsme měli nahraná, spolu s názvy skladeb a řekli mu, že chceme nadpozemský pohřební průvod pochodující zdevastovanou krajinou...a to je přesně to, co udělal.

Jakým způsobem u MEMORIAM vnikají nové skladby? Jak probíhá samotný proces tvorby nového materiálu? Kdo je autorem hudby?

S veškerými nápady přišel Scott – většinou nám je pošle mailem v MP3 formátu se základní strukturou skladby. Pak si vybíráme to, co se nám líbí a když se dostaneme do zkušebny, tak to potom dáme všechno dohromady. Frank je opravdu profík a má spoustu zkušeností se skládáním a my víme, co moc dobře funguje. Jakmile máme základ včetně bicích, vezmu si to a začnu pracovat na textech a názvech skladeb. Je to rychlý proces.

Kdo je autorem textů pro „For the Fallen“ a o čem pojednávají? Kde pro témata berete inspiraci?

Texty ke skladbám píšu já. Inspiraci čerpám přímo ze zkušeností, ze světa kolem nás. Vždycky tady bude velká inspirace válkou, to je to, čeho se držím a nehodlám s tím přestat. Nicméně v Memoriam se vyskytují více politická témata spolu s tématem smrti, smutku a lítosti. To je to, s čím jsme kapelu zakládali.


Zvuk „For the Fallen“ mixoval váš kytarista Scott Fairfax. Líbí se mi, že zníte studeně, prašivě a zároveň čitelně. Vypadá to, že Scott odvedl vynikající práci. Mě by zajímalo, jak novinka vznikala? Mluvili jste všichni do výsledného zvuku? Nelákal vás třeba nějaký jiný zvukový mistr, který by na vaši nahrávku nahlížel s větším nadhledem, Scott je přeci jen příliš zainteresován.

Jsme spokojeni s tím, jak album dopadlo. Je to časový dokument a Scott pracoval tvrdě po boku producenta Ajjeta z Hellfire studia. Nahrávání zabralo pouze dva týdny, většinou víkendy a to večer kvůli našim pracovním a rodinným závazkům. Mnohem déle nám však zabral mix alba, abychom dostali přesně takový zvuk, jaký jsme chtěli. To nám zabralo něco kolem čtyř týdnů.

Hrajete typický, klasický „starý“ death metal. Nikdy jste z téhle cesty neuhnuli, jste „ortodoxní“. Osobně je to jeden z důvodů, proč se mi vaše tvorba tolik líbí, ale nelákalo tě někdy zkusit hrát něco trošku jiného, nějak tvorbu MEMORIAM ozvláštnit?

Vyzkoušeli jsme s Memoriam nějaké nové nápady, například zvuky, které pomáhají doplňovat dynamiku, protože jsme čtyřčlenná kapela. To je něco, co jsem nikdy předtím nezkoušel. Obecně však máme tendenci se držet toho, co víme, že funguje. Viděl jsem v průběhu let spoustu kapel experimentovat s novým zvukem a nakonec to má spíš tendenci odradit fanoušky. Memoriam bude mít vždy na sto procent kořeny v oldschool death metalu.


Novinka „For the Fallen“ vyšla také na gramodesce. Jaký máš vůbec vztah k vinylům? Sbíráš je? Máš rozsáhlou sbírku? Některé kapely dnes prodají víc vinylů než CD. Jak jste na tom vy?

Byl jsem velkým sběratelem vinylů. Pocházím z doby než byly CDčka a vždycky jsem upřednostňoval hmatatelnou podstatu vinylu. Obal alba pro mě byl vždy důležitý a myslel jsem na to i při „Far The Fallen“. Miluji kvalitu zvuku vinylu,dokonce i malé škrábance, které dávají vinylu vlastní identitu. Nicméně jsem musel prodat před pár lety celou svou sbírku, když jsem se dostal do finančních potíží (děti jsou drahé). Nevím jak jsou na tom prodeje v tuto chvíli, tak nemůžu říct, zda se vinylů prodalo více, než Cdček, ale vzhledem k množství variant, které NBR vydalo na vinylech by mě to nepřekvapilo.

Když se ještě podíváme na začátek…Co bylo vlastně tím prvním impulsem, že jste dali dohromady MEMORIAM?

Memoriam vznikl v podstatě na konci roku 2015. Po tragické ztrátě Martina Kinddie v září 2015 se Bolt Thrower rozhodl pozastavit činnost kapely na neurčito. Strávil jsem několik měsíců přemýšlením o tom, co chci dělat se svým životem a rozhodl se, že život je příliš krátký na to, abych seděl a čekal jak se rozhodnou ostatní. A tak jsem vytvořil novou kapelu se svými starými kamarády – zakládajícím bubeníkem Bolt Thrower a Frankem z Benediction. Ze začátku jsme se scházeli spíš pro zábavu a abychom dostali radost zpět do našeho života a všechno to nějak rostlo. Dá se říct, že Memoriam vznikli na počest památky Martina Kinddie Kearnse.


Zpíváte a hrajete o válkách. Kolikrát volíte poměrně kontroverzní, historicky sporná témata. Už se vám někdy stalo, že jste s tím měli někde problémy, zakázali vám koncert, obvinili vás z militarismu apod.?
Ano, válka byla stálým tématem a zdrojem lyrických inspirací po celou dobu mé kariéry zpěváka death metalové kapely. Ale vždy jsem k tomu přistupoval z psychologického hlediska. Nikdy jsem neřekl, že je válka dobrá nebo špatná – je to jen příznak lidské nátury. Nikdy jsem se nezajímal o to psát o krvi a gore tématech války, ale o způsobu, jak válka ovlivňuje lidi. Takže jsem nikdy neměl nikoho, kdo by zpochybňoval mé texty, protože v nich není nic sporného. Pouze jednou jsme museli zkrátit set v roce 1992 na tour v USA s Bolt Thrower, když byl koncert narušen nacistickými skinheady.
A co historici, fanoušci apod.? Neměli někdy připomínky k tomu, že je nějaký text nepřesný, že jste čerpali z jiných, „nesprávných“ zdrojů, případně neozvali se pamětníci, veteráni?
Jak už jsem zmínil, nemluvím o faktických podrobnostech ohledně války, ale snažím se zkoumat její dopady na lidi. Hodně vědeckých vojenských historiků mě kontaktovalo, že se zajímají o hudbu a texty, které tvoříme, stejně tak, jako členové vojenských sil z celého světa a další lidé, kteří se nacházeli ve válečných zónách zjistili, že jim naše muzika a texty, které jsem napsal pomohly v situacích, které tam zažili.
Jste kapela složená ze samých slavných osobností. Každý z vás je umělcem, který se chce nějak vyjádřit, dát do muziky kus sebe. Nestává se vám, že máte třeba při nahrávání na něco každý jiný názor? Jste schopni se třeba pohádat? Kdo má nakonec rozhodující slovo?
Termín „superkapela“ mě vážně pobavil - my jsme jenom 4 kamarádi, kteří dělají hudbu, která je baví. Není mezi námi žádné ego a my se opravdu těšíme na setkání jednou týdně ve zkušebně, abychom si zahráli skladby, které jsme již napsali a skládali nové. V naší životní fázi jsme velmi vděční za tuto příležitost, kterou máme. Jistěže máme neshody ohledně způsobů, jak se některé věci dělají, ale máme dost zkušeností na to, abychom to dokázali společně vyřešit jako přátelé. To je to, o čem je Memoriam - oslava života prostřednictvím Death Metalu!
Jak dáváte dohromady koncerty? Každý z vás působí ještě v jiných kapelách. Kdo dostane nakonec přednost, když se vám překrývají termíny? A samozřejmě se musím zeptat...přijedete někdy k nám, do České republiky?
V tuto chvíli se na 100% soustředíme na Memoriam, takže v tomhle není problém.


Co chystají MEMORIAM v nejbližších měsících? Už připravujete nový materiál pro další desku?
Během léta jsme poměrně zaneprázdněni a to až do konce září. Hrajeme na mnoha evropských festivalech a máme i několik klubovými koncertů. V říjnu 2017 máme v plánu jít do studia nahrávat naše druhé album. V současné době pracujeme na novém materiálu. Máme již 4 nové skladby, na kterých pracujeme a jednu z nich nazvanou „ Nothing Remains“ jsme začali hrát i živě. Je v podstatě o demenci, to je něco, s čím se potýká má matka a má to velký dopad na můj život.
Děkuji za rozhovor a přeji co nejvíce vítězství na death metalových bojištích. Přeji spoustu prodaných nosičů, stovky šílených fanoušků a tuny dobrých nápadů. Ať se vám daří i v osobním životě.

Recenze/review - MEMORIAM - For the Fallen (2017)

Ave MEMORIAM! I listen to your new album „For the Fallen“over and over and I cannot „get it out of my head“! I think that it is very good. How do you feel about the album when some time has passed? How are the fans´ reactions? How about reviews, critics?

We are really please with the reaction that For the Fallen has received across the world, of course there are a few critics out there that do not like it because it is not like Bolt Thrower or Benediction., but you can’t please everybody and it was never our intention in the first place to make an album that sounded exactly like Bolt thrower or Benediction. We try with Memoriam to create our own sound and identity. 

Your great cover was done by Dan Seagrave. How did you choose the motive? Did Dan hear any songs for inspiration? Personally, I have not seen a better cover for a death metal album this year so far. 

We are totally chuffed with the album cover, Dan has created a fantastic piece of artwork from the brief idea that we gave to him. We sent over the demos of the songs we had recorded along with a list of song titles and told him we wanted an ethereal funeral procession marching across a devastated landscape – and that’s exactly what he did!

How do MEMORIAM compose new songs? How is the process when you create a new material? Who is the author of your music?

Scott comes up with all of the riffs – he usually sends them to us by email on mp3 format with a basic structure to a song – we then pick out the bits that we really like and when we get into the rehearsal room that is when we pull it all together. Frank is really good and has had plenty of experience structuring songs and we know what works well. Once the basic structure is in place along with Whales signature drum style I take it away and work on the lyrics and the song title. It is a fast process. 

Who is the author of your lyrics for “For the Fallen” and what are the songs about? Where do you find inspiration?

I write the lyrics to the songs – I draw my inspiration from direct experience of the world around us. There is always going to be a large amount of inspiration from the eternal subject of war, this is something I have always done and intend to continue to do so. However with Memoriam there are more political elements within the lyrics along with the topics of death, sorrow and mourning which is how the band was formed when we started out.

The sound of “For the Fallen” was done by your guitar player Scott Fairfax. I like that you sounds cold, ashy and at the same time it is readable. It looks like Scott did a great job. I was wondering how the new album was created. Were you able to talk about the final sound and have some comments? Did you want to try a different sound master who would see your music with a wider perspective than Scott who is more involved?

We are pleased with how the album came out for us, it is a document of the time, and Scott worked hard alongside the producer Ajeet @ Hellfire Studios. It only took 2 weeks to record, mainly at weekends at on the evenings due to our work and family commitments. But it took a lot longer to mix the album to get it to how we wanted it to sound, around 4 weeks mixing in total. 

You play a classic “old” death metal. You have never change, you are “orthodox”. Personally that is one of the reasons why I like your work. But have you ever thought about doing something different, to spice MEMORIAM a little bit?

We have tried out some new ideas with Memoriam such as introducing samples which help to fill out the dynamics, as we are a 4 piece band. That is something I have never tried before. But generally speaking we tend to stick with what we know works well for us. I have seen so many bands experiment with new sounds over the years and ultimately it tends to dilute what they are doing and also alienate the people that support them, Memoriam will be sticking 100% to its old school death metal roots!

The new album “For the Fallen” was published on vinyl. How about you and vinyl? Are you a collector? Do you have a wide collection? Some bands sell more vinyl than CDs. How about you?

I used to be a huge collector of vinyl, I come from an era before there were CD’s and always have preferred the tactile nature of Vinyl, the album cover has always been a thing of great importance to me, the design of the cover of For The Fallen had this in mind. I love the sound quality of vinyl, even the small scratches which give each piece of vinyl its own identity. However I had to sell all my records a few years ago when I fell into financial difficulties (children are expensive things to have!). I no nothing of our sales at this point so could not say if Vinyl has sold more than CD – but the amount of variations that NBR have released in vinyl it would not surprise me!

Let’s look back a little bit…what was the main impulse for founding a band called MEMORIAM?

Well basically Memoriam was formed at the end of 2015. Following the tragic loss of Martin Kiddie Kearns in September 2015 Bolt Thrower decided to put the band on hold indefinitely. I spent a few months deciding what I wanted to do with my life and decided that life is too short to sit around waiting for others to make decisions – so I decided to form a new band with my old mates Whale the former drummer of Bolt Thrower and Frank from Benediction. We really just got together initially to have some fun and try to get some enjoyment back into our lives and it all grew from there. You could say that Memoriam were formed as a tribute to the memory of Martin Kiddie Kearns.

You sing and play about wars. Sometimes the topics are quite controversial and historically disputable. Has it ever happen to you that you had some problems because of that? Have you ever been abandoned to play, been accused of militarism, or something?

Yes, war has been a constant theme and a source of lyrical inspiration throughout my career as a vocalist in a Death Metal band! But I have always approached the subject matter from a psychological perspective, I have never stated that war is good or war is bad – it is just a symptom of human nature. I have never been interested in writing too much about the blood and gore aspect of war but more about the way in which affects people. So I have never really had anyone dispute my lyrics as there is nothing really to dispute. The only time we had to cut a set short was back in 1992 on tour in the USA with Bolt Thrower when the gig was disrupted by Nazi skinheads.

What about historians, fans, and so on? Have they ever had some comments about your lyrics which were for example incorrect, that you founded information from “wrong sources”? Or maybe some veterans talked to you about it?

As stated previously I do not really dwell on factual detail about war but seek to examine the effects it has on people. I have had a lot of academic military historians contact me that are into the music and the lyrics we create. The same with members of the military forces from across the world and also people that have actually been within war zones that have found that our music and the lyrics I have written a way to help them through the situations that they have experienced.

Your band is full of celebrities. Every single one of you is an artist who wants to express himself into the music. Has it ever happened to you that you had different opinions during recording? Do you fight? Who has the last word?

The term Super group really makes me laugh – we are just 4 mates making the music that we enjoy playing together, there are no egos within our band and we really look forward to getting together once a week in the rehearsal room to practice the songs we have written and create new songs. At our stage of life we are al very grateful for the opportunity to do this. We all have disagreements about the ways some things are done, but we are experienced enough to work it out together as friends That is what Memoriam is all about – a celebration of life through Death Metal!

How do you put together concerts? All of you play in different bands. Who wins when the dates are not working out? And, of course I have to ask, do you want to go to the Czech Republic?

At the moment we are all totally focused 100% on Memoriam – so that is not really an issue at this point.

What are Memoriam’s plans for the next few months? Do you prepare a new material for a new album?

We are fairly busy throughout the summer up till the end of September playing at a lot of European festivals along with a few club shows also; we intend to go into the studio to record our 2nd album in October 2017, we are currently in the process of writing this right now. We already have 4 new songs that we are working on, 1 of which we have started to play live which is called ‘Nothing Remains’ which is primarily about Dementia, something that my mother has and has had a massive impact on my life.

 Potkal jsem včera večer samotného Satana. Vypadal velmi příjemně a podal mi svoji ruku. Přijal jsem, odhodil všechny zábrany a těšil se na večerní okultní obřad. Zavedl mě do starého znesvěceného kostela, kde už bylo všechny připraveno. Na oltáři nahá dívka, skropená krví z kohouta. Na kříži nasazená kozlí hlava, kolem postavy v kápích, oči padlých kněží. Chyběla jen hudba. Vytáhl jsem z tašky nové album holandských death metalistů NEOCAESAR. Obřad mohl začít.

 NEOCAESAR je kapelou složenou ze samých slavných a zkušených metalových osobností. Sešla se zde parta maniaků, kteří moc dobře ovládají černé smrtící řemeslo. Už na první poslech působí jako doktoři, snažící se způsobit další  morovou ránu. Vítejte ve starých katakombách, kde zní jediný, pravý a nefalšovaný death metal devadesátých let. Peklo opravdu existuje! 



"11:11" je albem jako vystřiženým z doby, kdy byly nahrány desky jako "Diabolical Summoning", "Cross the Styx" od SINISTER, případně první alba CANNIBAL CORPSE, MONSTROSITY, PESTILENCE. Skladby jsou absolutně devastující, mají ten správně hnilobný zvuk a působí jako tsunami ve staré márnici. NEOCAESAR jsou jako jezdci apokalypsy, kteří se vrátili na zem šířit bezbožná slova, smrt a zlo. Připomínají morovou nákazu, která už zničila většinu všech živých. Album zní absolutně drtivě, je pro mě obrovským letošním překvapením. Mám rád death metal v jeho klasické podobě a zde jsem dostal jeho totální esenci. Obracím kříže směrem dolů, kreslím všude kolem pentagramy. Přehrávám desku stále dokola a doslova cítím, jak kolem mě chodí Smrt se Satanem. Vynikající death metalové album, které vás uhrane svojí temnou silou!

Yesterday, I met Satan himself. He looked very nice and he handed me his hand. I accepted, threw away all barriers and looked forward to the evening occult ceremony. He brought me to an old desecrated church and everything was ready there. On the altar was a naked girl covered in blood from a cock. On the cross was a goat´s head, around were creatures in hoods, eyes of the fallen priests. The only thing missing was the music. I pulled out a new album by Dutch death metal band NEOCAESAR from by bag. The ceremony was ready to begin.

NEOCAESAR is a band made up of famous and experienced metal personalities. There is a bunch of maniacs who knows how to control the black deadly craft. Even when you listen to them for the first time they sound like doctors who try to cause another plague. Welcome to the old catacombs where the only music playing is the real death metal of the 90s. The hell is real!


“11:11” is an album which seems to be cut out of the times when were recorded albums like “Diabolical Summoning”, “Cross the Styx” by SINISTER, or the first album by CANNIBAL CORPSE, MONSTROSITY, PESTILENCE. Those songs are absolutely devastating, they have the right rotting sound and feels like tsunami in an old morgue. NEOCAESAR are like the riders from Apocalypse who came back on earth to spread their wicked words, death and evil. They remind me the plague which killed most of the living. The album sounds absolutely overwhelming and for me it is this year´s biggest surprise. I like death metal in its classic form and those guys gave its complete essence. I am turning the crosses upside down, drawing pentagrams everywhere. I play this album over and over and I literally can feel how Death and Satan are walking around me. Excellent death metal album which will bewitch you with its dark power!

 Spálený kostel, po včerejším okultním ceremoniálu. Zděšené oči věřících, kteří stále uctívají vymyšlené modly. Z temných koutů na nás zírají pohledy šílených skřetů. Poslové samotného pekla vás zvou na další den, do dalšího kostela. Do kostí se vám vkrádá chlad. Zlo zase jednou zvítězilo nad světem. Poslouchám novou desku německých BLACKEVIL.

 Pro pochopení tohoto díla se prosím všichni přesuňme do osmdesátých a devadesátých let minulého století. Tenkrát vládli metalu kapely jako BATHORY, VENOM, DESTROYER 666, ale i třeba DESASTER, AURA NOIR. Z jejich tvorby BLACKEVIL čerpají a jím jsou zcela oddáni. Pokud tedy máte rádi black/thrash metal, s ledovými heavy metalovými vsuvkami, tak neváhejte. 
"The Ceremonial Fire" je mocně chladným albem pro všechny pamětníky. Reálný zvuk, sázka na dobré temné nápady, postupná gradace skladeb - tohle všechno dělá z tohoto počinu doslova povinnost pro obdivovatele obrácené víry. Pro mě osobně se jedná o skvělou nahrávku, kterou si nejraději pouštím při svých dlouhých výletech po starých opuštěných hřbitovech. Já všechno to studené rouhání BLACKEVIL věřím, užívám si ho a těším se na další večer, kdy mě naplno zahalí temnota. Němci nejsou nijakými stylotvůrci, ale železo kují poctivě, s ohněm v srdci. Obraťte všechny kříže, přichází váš pán! Alespoň tak to z této desky cítím. Vynikající black thrash metal, doslova narvaný ledem a sírou!

Burned church after yesterday´s occult ceremony. The horrified eyes of the faithful who still worship the fanciful idols. Out of the dark corners, there are mad goblins staring at us. The messengers of the Hell itself are inviting you to another day, to another church. There is coldness crashing into your bones. Evil won over the world once again. I listen to this new album by German BLACKEVIL.

To understand this album we all have to go to the 80s and 90s of the last century. At that time the death metal was controlled by BATHORY, VENOM, DESTROYER 666 but also DESASTER, AURA NOIR. BLACKEVIL draws from those band´s works and they are completely devoted to those bands. If you like black/thrash metal with cold heavy metal parts, do not hesitate.


“The Ceremonial Fire” is a very cold album for all veterans. Real sound, a bet on good dark ideas, gradual gradation of songs – all of this makes this album an obligation for all admirers of the reverse faith. For me, this is a great records and I listen to it during my long walking trips to old abandoned cemeteries. I believe that all of the cold blasphemy by BLACKEVIL is real. I enjoy it and I am looking forward to another evening when the darkness fully covers me. Those Germans are not creators of some new style but they know how to do metal – with fire in their hearts. Turn all the crosses upside down, your Lord is coming! At least, that is how I feel when I listen to this album. Excellent black thrash metal which is literally filled with ice and sulfur!
