Interview with death metal band from Finland - PURTENANCE.

Ave PURTENANCE! In the summer you totally slaughtered fans at the Obscene Extreme festival in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, I could not attend, but my friends told me, that you were excellent. How did you enjoy the show and the whole festival? How did you like the Czech Republic?

- Thank you for the compliments! We enjoyed to our stay at Obscene Extreme and Czech Republic. Everything was just so great, the music, all the people we met, the food and especially the atmosphere! It was most definitely one of the best highlight in our career and it is something to remember when we grow older and grayer.


Recently, you have released the latest novelty "Paradox of Existence". I'm really excited about it. How do you feel about it, how do the fans perceive it and what about music critics? I just wonder why only four songs? I expect full length album.

- When we resigned to Xtreem Music (our record label), we decided that first thing to release would be an EP. It was a good way to introduce our new members and our progression (if you can call it that) to the public. It seems that fans have liked it and critics as well. We are happy of the result by ourselves also and can’t wait to finish writing new material for our next release!

How does PURTENANCE create new songs? What about a process of creating new material? Who is the main author of the music?

- Usually someone brings riffs or even full songs to rehearsals and we arrange them to sound us. Juha is the main composer but now that Simo have joined us, he has written some songs too. He wrote half of the songs on ”Paradox of Existence” and he will deliver some more to releases yet to come. It takes more or less time to write ideas to full songs, we take no pressure to make new stuff and freely change things in rough song motifs to make them sound and feel to what we are looking for.


Who is the author of cover art for album „Paradox of Existence" and what is its meaning? Personally, this cover seems to me fitted more for a "black metal" than a death metal album.

- Artist behind the cover of ”Paradox of Existence” is no other than the legendary Chris Moyen. He has done all art to our covers since 1992 and continues to make them, if it’s up to us. We don’t question his intentions and inspirations behind the art, he has free hands to make what he seems fit. He usually gets the title and work from there. It is true that the cover may seem more fitting to black metal album but hey, he has done lot’s and lot’s of them. So it may influence him to that direction. Personally for us, the newest cover is simple, yet multilayered and can, and hopefully will, inspire people to have their own interpretation for and from it.



Who is the author of lyrics for "Paradox of Existence" album and what are they about? Where do you get inspiration for themes?

- Simo wrote half of the lyrics for the EP and Ville K wrote the rest. This is the first time since 2011 that someone else has written lyrics for Purtenance than Ville K and in Ville K’s mind this is not a bad thing. Things have to evolve and change, it is the constant of our universe and when put in scale it will apply too. It was little harder for Ville K to sing the lyrics, when someone else has done them, but in same time it was also very refreshing. Working with different kind of view to things may have, or may not have, positive tension for accomplish the task in hand, for example different kind of rhythming of words to music is interesting thing to try. What comes to the themes of the lyrics, we only need to look around us, there is so much happening all around the world that basically the lyrics write themselves to paper. We just cover the self-evident to metaphors. We wan’t to leave the possibility for the listeners to make their own interpretations from the lyrics.



I'm just listening to your novel "Paradox of Existence," and I feel like I am locked in a cell with ABHORRENCE, BOLT THROWER, BLASHPHERIAN, IMMOLATION, INCANTATION. The album has a great dark and raw sound. Where did you record the album and how satisfied are you with the result? Did you have a say in the final sound?

- Well thank you very much again. We recorded and mixed everything by ourselves in our own rehearsal place. Only the mastering was done by someone else (Jaakko Viitalahde at Virtalahde Mastering). We could not be more happier of the results. We have actually recorded everything by ourselves since we were awakened from slumber in 2011. Every time we do a new record (or EP) we try to beat the last one and this time we think we took very big leap forward and continue to explore this path in the future too.

I think "Paradox of Existence" would be best to release it on vinyl. Do you think about it? What is your relationship to vinyl and their sound? Are you a collector?

- We would like to have the EP released as a vinyl too, but that is something our record label decides. Their policy just seems to be that it is not with it to release EP’s in vinyl, just full-length albums. Some of us in the band (3/5) collects records in vinyl, there is just something special in vinyl. The art will have more space, the sound has something raw and untamed in it and over all, vinyl needs more dedication to listen to. It simply is not the kind of thing you just put on and forget, you have to take your time with it and focus on listening. No streaming service or even cd’s can offer you that.


You are a veteran who has experienced a lot like a musician. The world and the music industry have been changed a lot. The internet has started and music is being downloaded, CDs are selling less and less, fans generations are aging and they have now other worries than music. Death metal is not long ago "modern". How do all these changes affected PURTENANCE?

- From our point of view and with the reasons we do this, we actually haven’t suffered from the changes that much. On the contrary, we may have had some advantage from the rise of internet. More and more people are capable to find our music and to listen it. It was much harder 25 years ago to find music from a small band like us. We do this for fun and not for profit, we try to aim that this will cost and give us +-0€ and we have mostly been successful in achieving that. We don’t follow trends, we do what we wan’t to do and if someone else likes that, that’s great. If someone does not like what we do or what we play, that is his or hers problem, not ours.


Do you remember when you released "Member of Immortal Damnation" in 1992? This album has become "sacred" for your fans and critics. It's a most acclaimed album from your discography. What do you think, in your opinion? Do you think this is due to the time when the album was released or just because it was just the first one?

- It has to do with the time and the thing that it was our first full-length. So little we knew back then for what status that album would get, but also we didn’t care for what it would became. Still that album will have it’s reflections to everything what we will do, we just don’t wan’t to take any pressure from it.

Remind us what led to the breakdown of PURTENANCE in the early 1990s? How difficult then was to put the band back together after more than a decade?

- The usual put us in hibernation, military service (it’s obligation in Finland for men), work, families, so basically adulthood struck us. When the time was right, getting back together was not that hard. Harri and Juha started Purtenance back in the late 80’ and when they played first time together again in 2011, after more than 15 years, it was just like riding a bicycle. What you have once learned, you just can’t forget it so easily. Of course it had it’s impact and a push forward, when Dave Rotten gave us proposal for a record deal if Purtenance would come active again.


What about the Finnish death metal scene with "young blood"? Is there a lot of bands influenced and devoted to the style of the old 90s such as CORPSESSED, MAVETH, MORDID VOMIT, SHREPNELL STORM, LANTERN, DESOLATE SHRINE, etc ... would you recommend to us some other band that has recently attracted you?

- Just one, that everybody should hear and fear, GALVANIZER! Yesterday they released their first song from their upcoming album and it fucking kills!! Go check them out, you won’t be disappointed.

What about actually Finnish death metal scene? Are the buying a CDs and support bands? What is for example attendance when you are organizing a club event?

Well this depends. Some night there can be hundreds of people listening and some night there can be 5. We have been playing for 4 years now all around Finland and we se same people over and over again in different cities and venues. There are very little people involved in the scene, but they are very dedicated to it. 

Are there any albums which get your attention in last time? 

- We all have different kind of taste, what comes to music. Yes mainly extreme music is what we listen and breath but it also has so many different kind of forms. Nobody of us can pick a album that have had special attention for it, ’cos there are just so much new music released and there is still so many great releases to be found!


Do you know or are you listening some bands from Czech Republic? 

- Simo actually likes Master’s Hammer a lot and he was very happy to finally see them play live for the first time in Finland. And Gutalax gives a chill down to spine every time we hear it!

What about plans for PURTENANCE in the upcoming months?

- Now we are focusing to write material for our next full-length album. There is no release dates agreed yet and we will take our time to make it as good as possible we can. We don’t play any shows until 1. and 2. of june. Then we will play with Convulse and Lubricant in Helsinki and Tampere. That is something to wait for!

Běžím zimní krajinou. Bahno, mráz v kostech a ševelící vítr v korunách stromů. Doběhnu na místo, kde se protahuji. Započnu strečink, křupe mi v kolenou. Zaujme mě NĚCO, co leží kousek vedle "mé" mýtiny pod keřem. Vítr zaduje jak v hororovém filmu a jdu pomalu zjistit, co se stalo. Leží tam chudák, utýraný malý pes. Morda rozevřená, skelný vyhaslý pohled. Chvíli stojím v šoku a ptám se sám sebe i toho šílenýho Boha, co to tady prý řídí, jak mohl něco takového dopustit? Co za zvrhlého magora mohlo tolik ublížit nevinnému tvorovi?

Snažím se vyhýbat lidem, kteří čpí síru, snažím se nechodit na místa, kde cítím špatné vibrace. Záměrně, asi skoro jako každý, vytěsňuji ošklivé zážitky ze svého života. Jenže pak se stane podobná situace a já najednou marně hledám nějaký záchytný bod. Doběhnu domů, musím do sklepa, abych vzal lopatku a jdu psa pohřbít. Asi se to nesmí, ale o to teď nejde - prostě mu to dlužím, za nás, za lidi. Snad ti bude dobře aspoň v psím nebi, pokud nějaké existuje.

Zapnu doma internet a snažím se naladit na doomový večer v Divadle pod Lampou, kam jsem se rozhodl vyrazit. Hrají tam mí oblíbenci SELF-HATRED a Bělorusové WOE UNTO ME, které jsem ještě naživo neslyšel (a kteří nakonec bohužel nedorazili). Z informační dálnice na mě ale útočí další hnis. Kde se bere mezi lidmi tolik špíny? Levice versus pravice. Tahle kapela je hnusná, tohle je debil  - jen útoky, každej je chytrej až to bolí a mezitím nezbytné kozy a prdele. Nemám náladu na nic a tak si dám raději dobrou svačinu a natáhnu chvilku nohy nahoru. Hi-fi věž a kniha, pryč od veškerého šílenství kolem, pryč od mrtvých utýraných psů, pryč od ubohosti a ujetých myšlenek.

Zklidním se a je mi najednou tak nějak hezky na duši. Oproštěn od všeho si broukám staré CANDLEMASS. Dokonce jsem si vyhrabal jedno z posledních triček z dávných dob, které mi ještě je a už stojím dole na zastávce tramvaje. Pár neomalených dělníků z východu v teplákách, ani nevrlých důchodkyň s trvalými na hlavách, mě už nemůže rozhodit. Potřebuji si odpočinout. Možná i spočinout. Až na věky, amen!

Jsem na místě a jsem moc rád, že v klubu potkávám milé tváře. Pár sýčků a neustále nespokojených jedinců také vidím, ale už dávno jsem se jim naučil vyhýbat. Vidím i jedno děvče, které mi na sociální síti ukázalo už úplně všechno. Znám veškeré detaily jejího těla, tak si myslím, že jsme jako ti kamarádi. Ani na můj úsměvavý pozdrav neodpoví. Svět se asi fakt posral a zaslouží už jen pohřbít. Pod Lampou je to pořád stejný a čekám s pivem v ruce na hudbu. Panychida může začít.

Plzeňské SÓL bych s dovolením vynechal. Jejich hudbě zdá se vůbec nerozumím a vlastně mi ani nic neříká. Vyfotím pár obrázků a jdu raději na další pivo. 





Na SELF-HATRED jsem se těšil. Zatím mě ještě nikdy nezklamali. Pánové spustili první skladbu a já byl opět na lesní pěšině. Zmrzlý, ovívaný studenými záchvěvy temných melodií. V žilách mi náhle kolují na jemno nasekané částečky ledu. Plzeňané byli naléhaví, bolestiví, s ostrými hroty v melodiích, které mě příjemně drásaly páteř. Vidím kapelu po X-té a pokaždé jsou trošku odlišní. Dnes chemie zafungovala víc do tmy (mimochodem, pro mě po hodně dlouhé době kapela, které neskutečně slušela čeština - zazněla a sedla do hudby, jakoby tam patřila odnepaměti). Byl to bez debat krásně smutný zážitek. Jakoby se klub najednou ocitl uprostřed zimního hřbitova. Padaly ke mě z pódia černé chuchvalce beznaděje. Úžasně pochmurná show! Sad, royal black/doom metal which burnt like the strongest cold.







Na WOE UNTO ME jsem se také těšil, ale počasí a okolnosti nám bohužel nebyli nakloněni. Ucpaná dálnice D1 byla důvodem, že kapela nemohla přijet. Bylo nabídnuto vrácení části vstupného, což jsem pochopitelně odmítl.

Návštěvnost bych velmi hrubě tipl na padesát doomu chtivých fanoušků. Samé známé tváře, dalo by se také říci a pro mě osobně jeden z důvodů, proč se vyplatí na podobné akce chodit. Pokec s kamarády, vzpomínání na "staré dobré časy" a pivko, to vám žádný internet nenahradí. Se zvukem jsem byl spokojen a označil bych jej za solidní.

Nevím, jak to máte s koncerty vy, ale já nechci slyšet názory někoho jiného bezprostředně po ukončení vystoupení. Mám své emoce nastavené tak, že ve mě ještě chvilku doznívají. Musím si utřídit myšlenky, nechat vše působit. Taky se vyspat a pak až sednout ke klávesnici. Jsem moc rád, že se v Plzni pořádají doom metalové koncerty. Snad nikdy se mi nestalo, že bych odešel nespokojen.



Nadšený, i když pořád ještě zachumlaný do myšlenek, jsem odcházel i ze středeční Lampy. Opakuji to stále, ale připomenu raději ještě jednou. Jsem jen pouhý fanoušek, který nahlíží na hudbu s pokorou. A jako takovému se mi doomová seance moc líbila. Už teď se těším na další! Děkuji za hloubavý zážitek a alespoň chvilkové zastavení a zklidnění v dnešním šíleném světě! Klaním se pořadatelům, bylo mi dobře!

 Ano, vlastně nevím, proč mě ta opuštěná budova tolik lákala? Vstoupil jsem dovnitř, v očekávání, napnutý a hledající temnotu. Staré oprýskané zdi, prach na kdysi používaných stolech. Bývala to kdysi nemocnice a dosud je všude cítit krev. Z nekonečných chodeb se ozývají výkřiky trpících a dole ve sklepě je možno potkat duše pitvaných těl. Málokdo ví, že odsud nikdo nikdy nevyšel živý.

 Přesně podobné pocity mám i z nové desky brutal death metalových ORGANECTOMY z Nového Zélandu. Kdysi one man projekt, dnes kapela šílených řezníků, která stvořila pořádně krvavé dílo. Když jsem "Domain of the Wretched" slyšel poprvé, nemohl jsem se ubránit dojmu, že mě vezou do v úvodu zmíněné nemocnice. Pitva začne s ranním rozbřeskem. Brutální, přesto nebývale pestré album, mě rozsekalo na malé kousky shnilého masa.


Deska "Domain of the Wretched" působí jako ozvěny z piteven. Propracované riffy, všude přítomná temná atmosféra, kusy slammových pasáží, které vás přišpendlí na zeď. Vezměte koktejl smíchaný ze SUFFOCATION, DEFEATED SANITY, přidejte pořádnou dávku morbidity, krutosti a energie a výsledek vás smete z povrchu zemského. ORGANECTOMY jsou pro mě jako zjevení ze zlého snu. V podzemních chodbách mě honí naštvaný doktor s motorovou pilou v ruce a z ampliónů mezi svoláváním perverzních sestřiček zní album "Domain of the Wretched". Chci desku poslouchat stále dokola, v rámci stylu se pro mě stala velkým překvapením. Líbí se mi vlastně vše - drsný a surový zvuk, klasický obal i vokál připomínající raněné zvíře. Cítím zde velký talent pro krvavé brutální rituály a obrovskou porci nadšení pro pitvání živých těl. Vynikající brutální death metal, ze kterého doslova odkapává krev!

Yes, I do not know why the abandoned building attracted me so much. I walked inside with expectations, excited and searching for darkness. Old cracked walls, dash on once-used tables. It used to be a hospital and you can still feel blood everywhere. You can hear screams of the suffering from the endless corridors and you can meet the souls of pitted bodies down there. Only a few people know that everybody was killed here. 

I have exactly the same feelings from the new album by brutal death metal band ORGANECTOMY from New Zealand. It used to be a one-man project and today the band has mad butchers who created very bloody album. When I heard “Domain of the Wretched” for the first time I could not stop the feeling that they are driving me to the previously mentioned hospital. The autopsy will begin with the morning dawn. Brutal yet unusually colourful album which smashed me into small pieces of rotten meat. 

The album “Domain of the Wretched” feels like echoes from autopsy rooms. Worked out riffs, dark atmosphere is everywhere, pieces of slam passages which will fasten you to the wall. Take the cocktail made of SUFFOCATION, DEFEATED SANITY and add a great portion of morbidity, cruelty and energy and the result will smash you from the earth. ORGANECTOMY are like a revelation from a bad dream for me. In the underground corridors is an angry doctor trying to catch me with a chain saw in his hands. From the speakers sounds calling of perverse nurses and meanwhile it plays the album “Domain of the Wretched”. I want to listen to this album again and again. In this style it is a big surprise for me. I like everything – rough and raw sound, classic cover and vocal which reminds me a wounded animal. I feel a great talent here of bloody brutal rituals and a great portion of enthusiasm for doing an autopsy of living bodies. Excellent brutal death metal which drips blood!

Ave MASS BURIAL! Nedávno jste vydali dosud čerstvou novinku „Breeding Plagues“. Jsem z ní doslova nadšen. Jaké na ní máte ohlasy, jak ji vnímají fanoušci a co hudební kritici?

Ahoj, ano, naše nové album je venku jen od posledního týdne v listopadu. Takže je docela brzy, ale zatím byly všechny reakce a zpětná vazba velice pozitivní a zdá se, že se album lidem líbí. Je zatím málo recenzí, ale mají vysoké hodnocení.

Jakým způsobem u MASS BURIAL vnikají nové skladby? Jak probíhá samotný proces tvorby nového materiálu? Kdo je autorem hudby?

Teď se doba změnila a my nemáme tolik času, abychom se mohli všichni sejít ve zkušeně a skládat spolu hudbu, jako v minulosti. Takže já (Raúl, zpěv a kytara) píšu hudbu doma. Naprogramuji bubny a nahraji kytaru (základy) a tohle pak dám ostatním, pak přidají vlastní části a pak teprve skutečně nahráváme s opravdovými bubny, kytarami…Na tomto albu jsem písně psal já, na předchozím album psal písně i Chicote. 


Právě poslouchám vaši novinku „Breeding Plagues“ a připadám si, jako bych byl zavřený v nějaké kobce spolu s DISMEMBER, NIHILIST, ENTRAILS a INTERMENT. Deska má skvělý švédský sound. Kde jste album nahrávali a jak jste s výsledkem spokojen? Mluvili jste nějak do výsledného zvuku?

Moc děkujeme, ano, milujeme tento styl a víme, jak na to. Nechceme vynalézt kolo, nebo něco takového a víme, že tento styl hráli zmíněné kapely před 30 lety. Ale je to naše vášeň a budeme to hrát i dál. Možná jsou některé kapely, které tento styl hrají kvůli tomu, že je to moderní, pro nové oživení, ale pro nás je to vášeň a nezajímá nás, co si o tom myslí ostatní. Všechno si nahráváme sami a myslím, že výsledek je o trošku lepší s každým novým albem.



Kdo je autorem textů a o čem pojednávají? Kde pro témata berete inspiraci? 

Texty píšu já, protože je to pro mě jednodušší. Taky při skládání musím hrát na kytaru. Témata jsou klasická pro podobný hnusný styl hudby – smrt, děsivé věci, válka a experimenty…inspirace? To záleží, občas z knih (ačkoli nemám moc čas na čtení), z hororů (nebo jen ze sledování televize :)), příběhy na internetu…

Vždycky jste měli úžasné obaly svých desek. Zakládáte si hodně na tom, jak má album, cover vypadat? Pod obalem letošního alba je podepsán Juanjo Castellano. Proč právě on? Jeho práce je dlouhodobě vynikající!

Ano, jsme old school a když jsme byli děti, neměli jsme internet a vybírali jsme si kapely jen podle obalů. Obvykle, když sis koupil album se skvělým obalem, nikdy tě to nezklamalo. Dnes, děti nejsou schopné ocenit ten pocit, když máš vinyl (nebo CD) a začneš u obalu, čteš si texty….dnes jen stahují hudbu, sledují youtube. To je škoda. A ano, Juanjo je náš hradní umělec a namaloval všechny naše obaly (kromě jednoho splitu s HUMILIATION). Také nám dělal logo a je to náš pravý fanoušek, takže volba byla snadná.




Hrajete typický, klasický starý death metal. Nikdy jste z téhle cesty neuhnuli, jste „ortodoxní“. Osobně je to jeden z důvodů, proč se mi vaše tvorba tolik líbí, ale nelákalo tě někdy zkusit hrát něco trošku jiného, nějak tvorbu MASS BURIAL ozvláštnit?

Ano, jsme velice typičtí, ale jak jsem řekl – tohle chceme dělat a u toho i zůstaneme. Máme (nebo jsme měli) hodně kapel, kde jsme hráli Grindcore, Melodic death metal, Crust, Metal…takže pokud chceme experimentovat, můžeme s dalšími kapelami, které vytvoříme. Ale MASS BURIAL je to, co je a nikdy se nezměníme. Budeme se jako muzikanti rozvíjet, možná zlepšíme zvuk, ale nápad je prostě takový. Mimochodem, máme větší rychlost a výbuchy než další klasické kapely jako DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED, GRAVE, … takže určitým způsobem máme vlastní značku.


Často slýchávám na koncertech v Čechách, jak lidé nechodí, jaká je malá návštěvnost. Zajímalo by mě, jakou máte vy zkušenost ze Španělska? Pro nás jste velká země se spoustou kapel, promotérů. Jezdí k vám často skupiny, které naší malou zemi na turné vynechají. Chodí se u vás na death metalové koncerty? Máte raději kluby nebo větší festivaly?

Obávám se, že to je takhle všude normální. Ve Španělsku, lidé chodí na koncerty známých kapel, ačkoli stojí lístek dost peněz, ale je vždycky vyprodáno. Také kapely, které hrají každý rok jako ARCH ENEMY, KREATOR…ti také vyprodají všechny koncerty i festivaly. Vždycky jsou to stejné kapely na stejných festivalech a lidi na ten koncert jdou (ačkoli neznají ostatní kapely), lidé na festivaly chodí jen pro chlast a zábavu. Myslím, že jsem moc starý, abych tohle pochopil. Každý rok festivalů přibývá. Osobně preferuje malé kluby pro koncerty, jak co se týče hraní, tak návštěvy. Samozřejmě bychom rádi hráli na velikých festivalech jako Obscene Extreme, Brutal Assault…protože tyhle mají pořád tu „esenci“. 

U nás vnímáme Španělsko jako silně katolickou zemi. Je tomu tak doopravdy? Dělá třeba církev problémy, když se pořádají koncerty? Ovlivňuje křesťanství nějak výuku ve školách, případně život všeobecně? Nedovedu si to nějak představit, v Čechách je nás většina ateisty.

Ano, naše země je pořád pod rouškou církve, ale teď tato hudba není nijak cenzurovaná, nebo řízená jako třeba v Rusku, Polsku…Vzdělávání se mění, alespoň si teď můžeš vybrat školu, která nemá v předmětech náboženství.

Myslím, že „Breeding Plagues“ by nejvíc slušelo vydání na vinylu. Neuvažujete o tom? Jaký je vlastně tvůj vztah ke gramodeskám, k jejich zvuku? Jsi sběratelem? 

Ano, rozhodně. Náš label slíbil, že udělá vinyl během několika měsíců, takže se na to těším a chci se toho dotknout vlastníma rukama. Zvuk vinylu je pro mě lepší než z CD, ale je to spíš duchovní záležitost, kterou prostě s CDčkem nedostaneš. Ano, sbírám, ale bohužel nemám nějak obrovskou kolekci :).




V současné době si většina lidí nová alba stahuje z internetu a používá jen jeho digitální podobu. Jak vidíš tuhle problematiku ty? Zajímal by mě tvůj pohled jako muzikanta.

Jak jsem řekl, jsem moc starý abych to pochopil. Já potřebuji fyzickou verzi. Internet je skvělá věc, můžeš tam najít spoustu nových kapel a hudby. Ale když se mi něco líbí, chci to mít i ve fyzické verzi.

V poslední době začíná spousta mladých kapel znovu hrát „old school death metal“. Většině to moc nejde, ale pár nových, slušných kapel, které pochopily, o čem to je, se najde. Máš nějakou oblíbenou, u které si myslíš, že má na to, „oživit staré časy“?

Ano, je tu hodně nových kapel, které přinášejí tu atmosféru. REVEL IN FLESH, GRAVEYARD, ENTRAILS, DEATHRITE,…

Jsou nějaké desky, které tě v poslední době oslovily?

Z těch nových by to byly výše zmíněné. Nové album od MORBID ANGEL (po té sračce co vydali předtím). „We are the gore“ od HAEMORRHAGE, dva nové songy od PESTILENCE jsou taky super…

Znáš, posloucháš nějaké kapely z České republiky?

Jasně, kapely jako BRUTALLY DECEASED, KRABATHOR, AHOMADO GRANUJO, a myslím, že znám i další, ale nejsem si jistý, odkud jsou. 


Co chystají MASS BURIAL v nejbližších měsících? 

Zkoušíme nové věci pro živé vystoupení a čekáme na promotéry, nebo festivaly, nebo kohokoli kdo bude chtít, abychom u něj hráli. V březnu podpoříme PESTILENCE na koncertě ve Španělsku a máme nové písně, které musíme zkoušet u labelů. Možná ve splitech s dalšími kapelami. Chceme to vydat v tomto roce, jako takový aperitive pro další album, které by mělo vyjít snad do pár let.

Ave MASS BURIAL! Recently, you have released your new album „Breeding Plagues“. I am very excited about it. How are the fans and critics´ reactions on it?

Hell-o, yes, our new album is out there since the last week of November. It´s a bit soon yet, but at the moments all feedbacks and reactions have been very positive and it seems people do like it. Only a few reviews at the moment but with higher punctuation.

How do MASS BURIAL compose new songs? How does the process go when you created new material? Who is the author of your music?

Now times have changed and we all are very busy so we can´t create new music all together in the rehearsal room as it was in the past so, using technologies, I (this is Raúl, vocals and guitar) compose all music at home. I program drums and record the guitars (basics) and then I give these stuff to other guys and, once learned, they can add their own trademark and then we do a real recording with real drums, guitars,... In this album I have composed all songs, in the previous ones Chicote did some songs as well.

I have been currently listening to your new album “Breeding Plagues” and I feel like being closed inside a tomb with DISMEMBER, NIHILIST, ENTRAILS and INTERMENT. The album has a great Swedish sound. Where did you record the album and are you satisfied with the result? Did you have any comments on the final sound?

Thanks a lot, yes, this is the style we love to do and we know how to do it. We don´t want to invent the wheel and we know this style is what some of the mentioned bands did 30 years ago but this is our passion and we´ll keep on playing this stuff. Maybe there are some bands playing this for fashion, for the new revival, but we do it for passion and we don´t care what others can say about this. We have recorded everything ourselves and I think the final outcome is a bit better with every recording.

Who is the author of your lyrics and what are they about? Where do you find inspiration?

I always write the lyrics because it´s easier for me, as I also have to play the guitar, if I write them. The themes are tipical things for this putrid style you know, about death, macabre things, killers, wars and experiments,... Inspiration? It depends, sometimes from a book (although i don´t have time for reading), some horror movies (neither for watching Tv :), stories from internet,....

You have always had a great covers of your albums. Do you take a special care about how your album looks like? Your new cover was done by Juanjo Castellano. Why him? His work is excellent!

Yes, we are old school and, when we were kids, we didn´t have internet and we had to choose bands only for the covers. Usually, when you bought an album with a killer cover you were never disappointed. Nowadays, kids are unable to appreciate the feeling of having a vinyl (nor Cd) and staring at the cover, reading the lirycs,.... now it´s only downloading music or on youtube. A real pity!

And yes, Juanjo is our usual artist and he has painted all our covers (except one for a split with Humiliation). He also did the logo and he is a real fan of ours so the choice is easy.

You play a typical, classic old death metal. You have never changed your style and you are “orthodox”. Personally, that is one of the reasons why I like your band so much but have you ever thought about trying something else just to spice the music of MASS BURIAL? 

Yes, we are very typical but, as I told before, this is what we wanna do and so we will keep. We have (or have had) many other bands where we´ve played Grindcore, Melodic death-metal, Crust, Metal,... so if we want to explore things we can do it with the other bands or with new bands we can create, but Mass Burial is what it is and we will never change, for good or bad. We will improve as musicians, we may get a better sound, but the idea is as it is. By the way, we have more speed and blast beats than any of the classic bands like Dismember, Entombed, Grave,... so, in a certain way, we have our trademark as well.

In the Czech Republic I often hear on concerts that there is not enough people there that the attendance on concerts is getting lower. I would like to know how it is in Spain. For us, Spain is a big country with many bands and promoters. There is a lot of abroad bands coming to your country to play concerts and those bands do not go to the Czech Republic. Do people in Spain go on death metal concerts? Do you prefer smaller clubs or bigger festivals?

I fear that´s the normal thing everywhere. In Spain, people go to concerts of big bands although the price is really expensive, but they always do a sold out. Also bands coming to play every fucking year as Arch Enemy, Kreator,... and they also sell all tickets and then festivals. Always the same bands playing in the same festivals and people like to go there (although they don´t know any bands) people go to festivals only to be drunk and for having fun. I fear I am too old but I can´t understand some things. You have more and more festivals every year. I really prefer small venues for playing and for attending. Of course we´d like to play in festivals as Obscene Extreme, Brutal Assault,... because those ones still have “the essence” i think.

For us, Spain is a strongly catholic country. Is that true? Is there a problem with this music with the Church while concerts? Does the Church influence the education at schools or the life? I cannot really imagine it because in the Czech Republic people are mostly atheist. 

Yes, this country is still under the shadow of the church but, at the moment, this kind of music is not censored or controlled by them as in Russia, Poland,... Education is changing a bit, at least, now you can choose schools without religion as a subject which is a first step.

I think that “Breeding Plagues” would look amazing in vinyl. Have you thought about that? How do you feel about vinyl its sound? Are you a collector?

Yes definitely. Our label promised to do a vinyl edition within the next months so I still want to see it and touch it with my hands. The sound, for me, is better on CD but the spiritual thing that you get with vinyls is impossible to get with CDs. Yes, I do collect but unfortunately I don´t have a huge collection :).

Nowadays the majority of people download music online and they only use its digital copy. How do you feel about this issue as a musician?

I told you before, I am too old and I fear I don´t understand that. I need to have the physical copy. Internet is good for discovering new bands or music but when I like something I need to own it in my hands.

In the past few years there have been many bands trying to play the “old school death metal”. There are some who are just trying and they do not succeed but some of them understand what is it about. Do you have any favourite band who will successfully bring the “good old days” back again?

Yes, there are many new bands who really bring the vibe. Revel in Flesh, Graveyard, Entrails, Deathrite,...

Are there any albums which have caught your attention recently?

The new ones from the above mentioned, The new one from Morbid Angel (after their previous shit), We are the gore from Haemorrhage, the two new tracks I´ve checked from Pestilence´s new stuff are awesome as well,... 

Do you know and listen any Czech bands?

Of course, bands like Brutally Deceased, Krabathor, Ahomado Granujo, and I guess some others that I don´t know the origin.

What are MASS BURIAL´s plans for the next few months?

We are rehearsing the new stuff for the new live set and we are just waiting for promoters or festivals or whoever call us to play. In March we will support Pestilence in a gig in Spain and we have some songs to be released by any label, maybe in a split with one more band. We want to release it this year as an apperitive for the next album that will be out maybe in a couple years.
