A touží po čerstvém mase a pomstě. Zažili tolik bolesti a utrpení, tolik hnusných věcí, že už to nešlo jinak. Musíme začít znovu. Hezky pomalu. Vím to já, všechny zombie i kapela HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, která letos přichází se svým druhým dlouhohrajícím albem.
Jedná se o další z projektů nezničitelného Roggy Johanssona, který se tentokrát spojil se slovutným vokalistou Mikem Hrubovcakem a bubeníkem Matthiasem Fiebigem. Výsledkem jejich spolupráce je morbidní death metal ze staré školy. Záležitost pro všechny fanoušky opravdové, reálné smrti i pohřbů do země.
Máte rádi kapely jako GOREFEST, BONE GNAWER, RIBSPREADER? Potom neváhejte ani chvilku. Je sice fakt, že některé motivy jsme u Roggy už několikrát slyšeli, ale to bychom mohli napsat i o spoustě jiných kapel. Nijak zvlášť mi to nevadí, i když je pravda, že některé pasáže působí trošku monotónně. Vše se valí kupředu, jako nějaký dobře seřízený stroj na zabíjení. Není to nic originálního, ale skladby se dobře poslouchají. Takhle v pátek, do hospody, ideální. Album se bude asi nejvíc líbit těm, kteří každý večer opouštějí své domovy a vydávají se na hřbitov. Mám to podobně. Sluchátka na uších, lopatu v ruce a čerstvě vykopaný hrob. Neznám nic lepšího, než dobře uleželou mrtvolu. Pokud posloucháte tenhle styl už dlouhé roky jako já, budete spokojeni, pokud ne, berte to jako pozvánku do záhrobí. Není to nic zásadního, ani se zde nemění hudební dějiny, ale to ani není účelem. Hlavní je probudit všechny mrtvoly v márnici, promluvit si s nimi a přesvědčit je, aby se vydaly do ulic. Máte tak vlastně jenom dvě možnosti. Buď si budete spokojeně podupávat nohou do rytmu a vše si krásně morbidně užijete a nebo půjdete ihned pryč. Miloval pohled na krev, která pomalu uniká z proříznuté tepny. Díval se obětí do očí a usmíval se. Fascinovala ho tenká hranice mezi životem a smrtí. Tělo vždy naaranžoval do podivných pozic, jejichž smysl znal jenom on. Zajímavý byl i výběr potencionálních obětí. Dlouhé hodiny stával ve stínu a pozoroval dívky kráčející ulicí. Byl lovcem, predátorem, byl tichým stínem, který útočí ze tmy. Kdo bude další na řadě? Kdo spatří záblesk nože?
Jsou kapely, které když slyším poprvé, tak mě proklejí a potom bedlivě sleduji všechnu hudbu, kterou vydají. Francouzští brutal death grind metalisté MORGUE si mě získali již před dlouhými roky, v době, kdy jsem ještě o hudbě ani nepsal. Není divu, kapela datuje svůj vznik do roku 1997 a jejich krvavé kořeny nelze přehlédnout. Nové album je volným pokračováním i vývojem předchozí tvorby. A také hudbou, která vám podřízne hrdlo.
Francouzům se opět povedlo nahrát desku, ve které je vše, co mám na tomto stylu tolik rád. Zkažená krev, surové riffy, spousta zajímavých momentů i temná a chladná atmosféra. Jako bych byl přímým účastníkem nějakého šíleného hororu, který je velmi podobný tomu, co jsem napsal v úvodu dnešního článku. MORGUE mají svůj typický a jasný rukopis. Navíc, a to je pro mě velmi důležité, se nová deska velmi dobře poslouchá. Je to i díky zvuku, který je drsný a maniakální. Zároveň si kapela zachovává takovou tu přirozenou živočišnost, která dokáže strhnout. Jedná se samozřejmě o ten nejhlubší underground, o hudbu, která není pro každého. Vyžaduje soustředěný poslech, chladný pokoj i zhasnutá světla. Teprve potom se před vámi začnou odehrávat smrtící gore příběhy. Hudba je velmi dobře napsaná, jednotlivé motivy postupně gradují. Hranice jsou překračovány s elegancí a zkušenostmi. Jakoby mě kapela zavřela do staré, plesnivé kobky, přikovala mě svými skladbami ke zdi. Tohle je lobotomie, trepanace lebky, tohle jsou ozvěny z druhé strany. Když sestoupíte několik pater pod zem, najdete v rezavé kleci pradávnou bestii. Když poslouchám "Close to Complete Darkness", připadá mi, že byla puštěna ven, že se toulá ulicemi a sleduje krev, která pomalu uniká z proříznuté tepny. Nové album je jako řev raněného zvířete, jako hudba, která zní ulicemi, když je na lovu. Troufám si tvrdit, a podepíšu vám to klidně vlastní krví, že se letošní novinka opravdu povedla. Stačí jen přidat hlasitost. Jen si dávejte pozor, kdo stojí ve stínu. Maniakální, surový, hnilobný brutal death grind metal, který vás strhne do špinavé stoky hnisavých lidských myšlenek! Masakr!

French brutal death grind metallers MORGUE won me over many years ago, at a time when I hadn't even written about music yet. It's no wonder, the band dates back to 1997 and their bloody roots cannot be overlooked. The new album is a loose continuation and evolution of their previous work. And also music that will cut your throat.
Once again the French have managed to record a record that has everything I love about this style. Bad blood, raw riffs, lots of interesting moments and dark and cold atmosphere. It's like I'm a direct participant of some crazy horror movie, which is very similar to what I wrote in the beginning of today's article. MORGUE have their typical and clear signature. Moreover, and this is very important for me, the new album is very easy to listen to. This is also due to the sound, which is harsh and manic. At the same time, the band retains that natural animality that can be captivating. This is of course the deepest underground, music that is not for everyone. It requires focused listening, a cool room and lights out. Only then do the deadly gore stories begin to unfold before you. The music is very well written, the individual motifs gradually graduate. Boundaries are crossed with elegance and experience. As if the band had locked me in an old, moldy dungeon, nailing me to the wall with their compositions. This is a lobotomy, a trepanation of the skull, these are echoes from the other side. If you descend a few floors underground, you'll find an ancient beast in a rusty cage. When I listen to "Close to Complete Darkness", it seems to me that it has been let out, that it wanders the streets, watching the blood that slowly escapes from a cut artery. The new album is like the roar of a wounded animal, like the music that echoes through the streets when it's on the prowl. I dare to say, and I'll sign it with my own blood, that this year's new album is a real success. Just turn up the volume. Just be careful who's standing in the shadows. Smrt půvabného média: detektivka ze staré Vídně - Frank Tallis 2020, Portál
Nemáte někdo něco ke čtení? Ptám se jedno takové klidné sobotní odpoledne rodiny. Právě jsem dočetl další knihu a několik jich mám někde na cestě. Zvedne se moje dcera, podá mi knížku, kterou si sama koupila z peněz z brigády. Přemýšlím o tom, jestli je to v dnešní době i jejím věku normální, ale asi je. Po návštěvě kina a zhlédnutí Duny II. si šly taky její kamarádky všechny nakoupit knížky. Ještě to není ztraceno, říkám manželce a jsme oba takoví hrdí, protože kdo to má dneska, že jo? Moje oblíbená stará Vídeň, období, ve kterém ještě vládne Václav Procházka, alias Franz Josef. Doba valčíků, ale také Sigmund Freud, který se v knize také několikrát mihne. A je samozřejmě zavrhován a je mu předhazován jeho židovský původ. Jsou to právě podobné střípky a prostředí, které dělají tento příběh výjimečným. Nečekal jsem mnoho, ale dostal jsem detektivku z doby, kdy se po ulicích proháněly omnibusy. Pánové nosili cylindry a dámy měly tak málo práv, že se o tom dnešním ženám ani nesní.
Léčí se tu ženská hysterie elektrošoky a lobotomií, zavírají se oči nad nevěrou mužů. Autor nás vezme i do špinavých uliček, ve kterých se prodávají přistěhovalkyně z Čech a Srbska. Zavražděna je žena, médium a provedeno je to samozřejmě hodně záhadným způsobem. Klasika se zamčeným pokojem zevnitř. Případ dostane na starosti inspektor Oskar Rheinhardt, který po večerech muzicíruje s doktorem Maxem Liebermannem, který je psychiatrem. Využije jeho znalosti a vše pomalu plyne ke zdárnému a překvapivému konci. Zajímavé jsou tehdejší vyšetřovací metody. Často jsem si říkal, kolik zločinců muselo uniknout a kolik jich bylo odsouzeno a byli nevinní. Vše plyne tak nějak jinak, autorovi se povedlo tehdejší dobu, se vším, co k ní patřilo, znázornit velmi dobře. Vyloženě jsem se vždy těšil, až se zavřu do své ulity se sluchátky na uších nebo jen tak u reproduktorů a ocitnu se o více než sto let zpátky po časové ose.
Chválím dceru druhý den při obědě, jak je šikovná a protože už mám přes polovinu knihy za sebou, můžeme o některých tématech diskutovat. Samozřejmě si oblíbila jednu z vedlejších postav, Amélii, která je léčena v sanatoriu právě doktorem Maxem. Ten jí pomůže, protože vidí, že je to silná a vzdělaná žena. Ona mu zase pomůže s případem. Má jiný pohled, podívá se na vše z odlišné strany. Často jsem si říkal, jaký byl udělán obrovský kus práce v právech žen. Schválně si knížku přečtěte a uvidíte sami. V některých momentech budete šokováni a budete o tom hodně přemýšlet. Třeba jenom takové studium na vysoké škole byl docela problém. A nejen to. Potom je samozřejmě hodně zajímavý svět iluzionistů, spiritistů a komediantů, mezi které patřila oběť. Zaujmou i detaily, jako americký fotoaparát, různé novátorské postupy i věci, o kterých se mnohdy prohlašuje, že se nemůžou nikdy ujmout. Dnes je běžně používáme.
Mám pro historické detektivky velkou slabost. Shodou náhod se mi poslední roky dostaly do rukou knihy převážně z Vídně nebo konce Druhé světové války. Abych pravdu řekl, tehdejší svět mě fascinoval. Už tenkrát byl mezi Vídeňáky velmi rozšířený antisemitismus. Zlo dávno bublalo pod povrchem. Židé mohli za všechno špatné a přisuzovalo se jim i spojení s ďáblem. Mimochodem, je zmíněn i případ Anežky Hrůzové a Hilsnera. Vždycky, když jsem podobné kapitoly dočetl, říkal jsem si, jak jsme se jako lidé od té doby nezměnili. Jsme pořád ovlivnitelní, stále potřebujeme "nepřítele", na kterého můžeme svést všechny svoje problémy a neschopnost. Historie se opakuje s až děsivou pravidelností. Když jsem tuhle knihu četl, říkal jsem si to opravdu velmi často. Češi tenkrát byli přistěhovalci ve Vídni a valného mínění o nich místní neměli. Pracovalo tam spousta dělníků, kuchařek a služek. A tvářili se na nás hodně nadřazeně. Nepřipomíná vám to něco?
Chodil jsem týden tak nějak lehčeji. Protože mi tuhle knížku doporučila a půjčila moje vlastní dcera. Vše jsem dočetl za tři dny a dodnes ve svých rozhovorech na některé pasáže odkazujeme a diskutujeme o nich. Byl jsem rád ve staré Vídni, s chutí jsem ji navštívil. Možná ani netušíme, kolik toho v sobě z tehdejšího mocnářství máme. S tím bych se s vámi tento týden rozloučil. Jedu totiž na chalupu do Jizerek a v batohu mám další knížku. Tentokrát je to žhavá novinka. Ale o tom až za týden. Děkuji za pozornost a přeji vám jen vše dobré. Mějte se co nejlépe.
Vídeňský policejní inspektor Oskar Rheinhardt je přivolán k nevysvětlitelnému úmrtí proslulého média. Jedná se o klasickou „záhadu zamčeného pokoje“. Zavražděná, půvabná mladá žena, byla středobodem kroužku spiritistů, jehož členy byli odborník na atypické zámky, nevypočitatelný maďarský hrabě, aristokratka – přívrženkyně madame Blavatské, která se považuje za vtělení exotického božstva, a další originální jedinci. Inspektor se radí o případu s doktorem Maxem Liebermannem, který se právě pod mírným nátlakem své rodiny chystá zasnoubit s přitažlivou, avšak povrchní Clarou, ale zároveň je stále více fascinován svou pacientkou slečnou Lydgateovou, vzdělanou a inteligentní anglickou guvernantkou se symptomy hysterie V zakouřených kavárnách mocnářství na konci devatenáctého století vzkvétá zájem o nové umělecké a vědecké směry, ale zároveň se to tu jen hemží jedinci pochybné pověsti. Holmesovskou dvojici vyšetřovatelů spojuje vášeň pro zpěv a klasickou hudbu, při jejímž poslechu se často věnují rozebírání případů, které inspektor právě řeší. Doktor Liebermann se navíc právě seznámil se Sigmundem Freudem a s velkým zájmem navštěvuje středeční schůzky v jeho bytě. Své nemalé znalosti a vhled pak dává k dispozici příteli inspektorovi. Čtenář si tak může kromě napínavého příběhu navíc vychutnat i autentickou atmosféru doby počátků psychoanalýzy ve Vídni s mnoha zajímavými detaily.
Měl pro tebe být jistotou. Člověkem, kterému se můžeš svěřit. Místo toho byl zlou a šílenou bestií. Krásná tvář, milá slova. Lidé ho měli rádi. Když jim každou neděli kázal v kostele. Když je vedl jako ovce na porážku. Teď tu visíš, v hlubokém sklepení, na rezavých hácích. Konečně na povrch vylezly všechny jeho zvrácené myšlenky, konečně ukázal naplno, co je zač. Ze zubů mu odkapává krev. Monstrum z nočních můr, samotný ďábel. V kobce hraje nové album holandských SEVERE TORTURE.
Ti letos vydávají další dlouhohrající album po dlouhých čtrnácti letech. Stačilo mi několik prvních poslechů, abych věděl, že tohle je stále hudba pro všechny prokleté, pro fanoušky pravé, nefalšované a reálné smrti. Budete přikováni ke zdi, pohřbeni zaživa a spáleni na popel!
Mě, stejně jako každého, asi první zaujme skvělý obal od Pära Olofssona. Přesně totiž vyjadřuje to, co se na nové nahrávce odehrává. Prvotřídní death metal, ukovaný z té nejkvalitnější oceli. Pokud tuhle smečku sledujete jako já od jejich počátků, tak víte, že se vždy jednalo o velmi nekompromisní, ostrý a divoký materiál. Postavený na klasických a tradičních základech z devadesátých let minulého století. Na ty jsou potom vždy přidávány krvavě pestré a velmi morbidní kompozice. Svět je při poslechu velmi temným místem k životu. Pánové nám i letos ukazují odvrácenou stránkou lidských myšlenek. Vše je naléhavé, drásající, devastující. Skladby jsou vybroušeny až k samé dokonalosti. S chutí jsem se rád a často zavíral do své kobky, abych zde album "Torn From The Jaws of Death" poslouchal stále dokola. Holanďané jsou ve skvělé formě a s ničím se moc nepářou. Rozsekají vás na malé kousky, roztrhají, zničí. A vy za to budete ještě rádi. Líbí se mi i zvuk, který je náležitě masivní, chladný a čitelný (Damiën Kerpentier - Engineer, Mendel bij de Leij - Mixing & Mastering Engineer). Maso odpadává od kostí, kosti praskají tlakem a lebky pukají v šílených rytmech. Dívám se do tmy a pokaždé z něj přijde absolutní zlo. Vnímám desku jako zuřivý atak, jako příšeru, která vám prokousne hrdlo. Společná setkání připomínají otevření smradlavého hrobu. Také cítíte tu síru? Ty děsivé ozvěny ze záhrobí? Tak přesně takhle na mě působí i nové album. Vstupuji opět do opuštěného kostela. Měl pro mě být jistotou. Člověkem, kterému se můžeš svěřit. Místo toho byl zlou a šílenou bestií. Krásná tvář, milá slova. Lidé ho měli rádi. Když jim každou neděli kázal v kostele. Když je vedl jako ovce na porážku. Teď tu visím, v hlubokém sklepení, na rezavých hácích. If you've been following this pack like I have since their early days, you know that it's always been very uncompromising, edgy and ferocious stuff. Built on classic and traditional foundations from the 90s. Then on top of that are always added bloody colourful and very morbid compositions. The world is a very dark place to live in when listening to it. The gentlemen show us the flip side of human thoughts again this year. Everything is urgent, wrenching, devastating. The compositions are polished to perfection. I happily and often shut myself in my dungeon to listen to the album "Torn From The Jaws of Death" over and over again. The Dutch are in great form and don't mess with anything too much. They'll chop you up into little pieces, tear you apart, destroy you. And you'll be glad you did. I also like the sound, which is properly massive, cool and clear (Damiën Kerpentier - Engineer, Mendel bij de Leij - Mixing & Mastering Engineer). Flesh falls off the bones, bones crack with pressure and skulls burst in crazy rhythms. I stare into the darkness and absolute evil comes out every time. Nůž, který mi byl zabodnut kdysi dávno do břicha, byl vykován z kvalitní švédské oceli. Dodnes si pamatuji odlesk čepele i bolest, která mi sevřela vnitřnosti. Psal se konec osmdesátých let minulého století a já se toulal ulicemi. S kamarády, kteří na tom byli velmi podobně jako já. Tenkrát jsme byli prokleti a zůstalo nám to dodnes. Začínali jsme na klasickém heavy metalu, thrash i black metalu. Nosili jsme džínové bundy a pásy z nábojnic. Muziku jsme poslouchali zásadně nahlas a pivo muselo být řádně vychlazené.
HELLBUTCHER se poprvé objevili na scéně až roku 2022 s ochutnávkou v podobě demonahrávky. Přesto jsem měl pocit, že jsem zpátky v dobách svého mládí. Není divu, kapela je složena ze samých zkušených muzikantů, ze švédské black metalové šlechty. Těmto pánům koluje tenhle styl v krvi a je jejich součástí. Novinka to jenom potvrzuje. Pamatujte na to, že ocel je potřeba dobře zakalit. A to se téhle smečce povedlo na výbornou.
Zpěvák Hellbutcher z NIFELHEIM se obklopil maniaky, kteří moc dobře vědí, o čem je poctivý, ryzí metal. Nikde žádné zbytečnosti, jenom pravý a zadek nakopávající black thrash metal, zahraný s krvavým pohledem. Satan zase jednou stojí na rohu ulice a usmívá se. Stačí ho jenom pozvat na pivo a přidat pořádně hlasitost. Strhněte někdo Ježíšovi jeho korunu z hlavy! Nezaslouží si ji. Ten jeho falešný úsměv jsme už dávno prokoukli. Tady se hraje ostře, nekompromisně, sází se na silné a divoké melodie. Líbí se mi živelný a chladný zvuk, který se mi pokaždé zadře hluboko pod kůži. HELLBUTCHER nahráli desku, která je stará a i svěží zároveň. Je v ní obsaženo velké množství chladné energie, nakumulované do jednotlivých skladeb. Je opravdu jako kus perfektně vykovaného železa, opracovaného k dokonalosti. Kapela je jako smečka prašivých psů, kteří dlouhé roky hlídali vstup do podsvětí. Letos se utrhli ze řetězu a touží po čerstvé krvi. Zvuk, obal, produkce, vše slouží k jedinému. Navěky vás proklít, strhnout do temných hlubin Hádovy říše. Na své si přijdou jak fanoušci IRON MAIDEN, tak BATHORY i VENOM. Už zase cítím ostrou čepel nože, který mi pomalu zajíždí do vnitřností. Dobrá hudba se pozná podle toho, že vás nenechá v klidu, že vás rozseká, zničí. Usmívám se jako ta stará děvka Smrt a těším se na další skladbu. Dejte mi někdo napít, cítím se totálně spálený! The knife that was stabbed into my stomach a long time ago was forged from high quality Swedish steel. I still remember the glint of the blade and the pain that gripped my insides. It was the late 1980s and I was wandering the streets. With friends who were very much like me. We were cursed then, and we're still cursed now. We started out on classic heavy metal, thrash and black metal. We wore denim jackets and bullet belts. We listened to the music loud and the beer had to be properly chilled.
HELLBUTCHER first appeared on the scene in 2022 with a tasting demo. Still, I felt like I was back in the days of my youth. No wonder, the band is composed of all experienced musicians, from the Swedish black metal nobility. This style runs in their blood and is a part of them. The new album only confirms it. Remember, steel needs to be tempered well. And this bunch has done that to perfection.
The singer Hellbutcher from NIFELHEIM has surrounded himself with maniacs who know very well what honest, pure metal is all about. There's no uselessness anywhere, just true and ass-kicking black thrash metal, played with a bloody eye. Satan once again stands on the street corner and smiles. Just invite him for a beer and turn up the volume. Somebody rip Jesus' crown off his head! He doesn't deserve it. We saw through his fake smile a long time ago. The playing here is strident, uncompromising, relying on strong and fierce melodies. I like the lively, cool sound that gets deep under my skin every time. The record is actually such a perfect essence of what I love so much about old metal. Forget the clichés and artificiality of many contemporary bands, this is music covered in cobwebs. It's like finding an old knife I was once stabbed with. When you remove the rust, it starts to shine just as it did in the style's glory days. HELLBUTCHER have recorded a record that is both old and fresh at the same time. There is a great deal of cool energy accumulated into the individual tracks. It really is like a piece of perfectly wrought iron, machined to perfection. The band is like a pack of mangy dogs that have guarded the entrance to the underworld for years. This year, they've broken free from the chain and are out for fresh blood. The sound, the cover, the production, everything serves one purpose. To curse you forever, to drag you down into the dark depths of Hades' realm. Fans of IRON MAIDEN, BATHORA and VENOM will be in for a treat. I can feel the sharp blade of the knife slowly sinking into my guts again. Good music is known by the fact that it doesn't leave you in peace, that it cuts you up, destroys you. I smile like that old bitch Death and look forward to the next song. Somebody get me a drink, I feel totally burnt! Pure, honest and cold black/thrash heavy metal, forged from the finest steel! Jdu raději na pivo a pouštím si alba jako je to nové od španělských maniaků HOLYCIDE.
Kdysi dávno, když jsem byl ještě mladý a svět se točil úplně jiným způsobem, jsem podobnou hudbu poslouchal. Chodili jsme s partou ven, kouřili na rohu a na ramenou jsme mívali kazeťák. Říkali nám vagabundi a rebelovali jsme proti všemu. Proti systému, proti všem. Když se ohlédnu za sebou, příliš se toho za ty roky nezměnilo. Jen máme lepší technologie k tomu, jak naštvat lidi. A tak si dávám další pivo a oceňuji, že jsou ještě kapely jako HOLYCIDE. Které mě umí přikovat ke zdi svým poctivým a ostrým thrash metalem.
Pánové sice nepřinášejí nic nového, ani převratného, ale to vůbec nevadí. Důležitá je pro mě energie, tlak, nakumulovaný vztek. Zkrátka a dobře všechny ty věci, které k dobrému thrash metalu patří. Když je potom přidán řezající zvuk, stylový obal, kývám se spokojeně do rytmu, bouchám pěstí do stolu a nakonec tančím po pokoji, jako zasažený elektrickým proudem. Přesně takhle to mám rád, přesně tenhle druh muziky koluje i v mých žilách, říkám svému kamarádovi a zvu jej do hospody. Jenže on nejde, on raději sedí doma a hltá další nesmysly z obrazovek. Říkám mu hele, vybodni se na to, raději přidej volume jako já. Stárneme čím dál tím rychleji a nestíháme svět kolem nás. Ještě, že existuje hudba, které mě nejen dokáže uklidnit, ale také vyčistit hlavu. Potřebuji pevný bod ve vesmíru, nějakou jistotu, asi jako každý. HOLYCIDE mi přesně tohle dávají. A přinášejí mi to velmi stylově a opravdově. Vše je ohlodáno na kost, syrové a špinavé. K tomu si připočtěte texty, kterým rozumím a máme tu album, které nelze nemít rád. Španělé zkrátka mluví i mojí řečí, jsou nastaveným zrcadlem. Nevím, jak to se světem dopadne, ale někdy si říkám, že staří autoři sci-fi měli v mnohém pravdu. A právě proto vypínám čím dál tím častěji všechny sítě světa a pouštím si do sluchátek "Towards Idiocracy". Album je totiž silné ve všech svých aspektech. Je surové i melodické, má jasný cíl. Once upon a time, when I was young and the world was spinning in a completely different way, I used to listen to music like this. We used to go out with a bunch of us, smoke on the corner and have a tape recorder on our shoulders. We were called vagabonds and we rebelled against everything. Against the system, against everyone. Looking back, not much has changed over the years. We just have better technology to piss people off. So I'm having another beer and I appreciate that there are still bands like HOLYCIDE. Who can drive me up the wall with their honest, hard-hitting thrash metal.
The gentlemen do not bring anything new or groundbreaking, but that does not matter at all. What matters to me is the energy, the pressure, the accumulated anger. In short, all the things that belong to good thrash metal. Then, when the cutting sound is added, the stylish cover, I sway contentedly to the beat, pound my fist on the table, and end up dancing around the room like I've been electrocuted. This is exactly how I like it, this is exactly the kind of music that runs through my veins too, I tell my friend, inviting him to the pub. But he won't go, he'd rather sit at home and devour more nonsense from the screens. I say to him, hey, knock it off, you better turn up the volume like me. We're getting older faster and faster and we can't keep up with the world around us. Good thing there is music that can not only calm me down but also clear my head. I need a fixed point in the universe, some certainty, I guess like everyone. HOLYCIDE gives me exactly that. And they bring it to me in a very stylish and genuine way. It's all gnawed to the bone, raw and dirty. Add to that lyrics that I understand and you have an album that is impossible not to like. The Spaniards, in short, speak my language too, they are a mirror set. I don't know how the world will turn out, but sometimes I think the old science fiction writers were right in many ways. And that's why, more and more often, I turn off all the networks of the world and play "Towards Idiocracy" in my headphones. The album is strong in all its aspects. Říká se, že když něco starého končí, něco nového začíná. Je to tak, kapela GRIDE se rozhodla hibernovat. A na rozloučenou vydala album "Vyzobat". Je po okraj narvané klasickým grindcore, opepřené hardcore. Zkrátka a dobře, pokud jste tuhle smečku sledovali od roku 1996, kdy byla založena, asi víte, o čem píšu. Jedná se o surový útok na vaše podvědomí. Pro mě osobně se jde potom o kapelu, kterou považuji v rámci žánru za legendu. Hrají v ní muzikanti, kteří už dávno nemusí nikomu nic dokazovat.
Jako asi každá takhle dlouho sloužící skupina, si pánové prošli mnoha změnami v sestavě, až už to bylo asi neúnosné a rozhodli se ukončit svoji aktivní činností. Je to svým způsobem škoda, zůstanou nám ale skvělé vzpomínky na mnohé skvělé koncerty, na turné, která se zapsala zlatým písmem do kronik. Pokud máte GRIDE rádi, nemělo by "Vyzobat" chybět ani ve vaší sbírce.
Je v tom určitě i kus nostalgie, ale hlavně hudba, která pálí a žhne. Jde se na hranu, i kousek za ní. Je to extrém s vlastním rukopisem i nápady. Mám k dispozici CD verzi, která vychází u L´inphantile Collective (u tohoto labelu je vydána i kazeta, o vinyl se postarají Insane Society). Album má pro mě i další rozměr a to jsou texty. Dalo by se také napsat, že se GRIDE naplno trefili do mého vkusu. Planeta kolem nás pomalu umírá, každý den přicházíme o další a další kus přírody. Lidé jsou jako invazivní druh, jako paraziti. Tenhle úhel pohledu má něco do sebe a jako fanoušek starých sci-fi knih, s ním bezezbytku souhlasím. Vraťme se ale k muzice. Grindcore je podle mého názoru velmi těžká disciplína. Je velmi náročné jej hrát tak, aby byl pestrý, zajímavý, aby nepůsobil monotónně. Tohle všechno se kapele povedlo na výbornou. Je to i díky různým stylovým odbočkám, "netypickým" nástrojům a hlavně přístupu. Pochválit musím i zvuk, který je ostrý a masivní, špinavý a čitelný zároveň. Jakoby kapela vzala všechny své pradávné nápady a naroubovala je na současnou dobu. Je to klasika, ale zahraná svěže a neotřele. Pro mě osobně je potom velmi důležité a zásadní, že se nenudím ani chvilku. Nemám rád různé žebříčky a srovnávání, stále si myslím, že hudbu nelze hodnotit čísly ani procenty, ale GRIDE mohou s klidem odejít do grind coreové síně slávy. Nezbývá než poděkovat, poklonit se až k zemi a narvat si novou desku pod tlakem do hlavy. Extrémní muzika u mě byla vždy o emocích, o předaných náladách, o zamyšlení. Musím znovu opakovat, že tohle umí tahle smečka perfektně. Podupávám si do rytmu, mávám hlavou, vzpomínám na divoké koncerty. Říká se, že když něco starého končí, něco nového začíná. Je to tak, kapela GRIDE se rozhodla hibernovat. A na rozloučenou vydala album "Vyzobat". Řeknu ti jenom jedno, kamaráde! Pokud si pravověrný grinder nebo hard corista, tuhle nahrávku musíš mít. To ti klidně podepíšu vlastní krví! Rychlý, nekompromisní, divoký grind hardcore, který tu bude hrát, až naši zemi totálně zničíme! Masakr lidských myšlenek!

They say that when something old ends, something new begins. It's true, GRIDE decided to hibernate. And to say goodbye, they released the album "Vyzobat". It's packed to the brim with classic grindcore, peppered with hardcore. In short, if you've been following this bunch since they formed in 1996, you probably know what I'm writing about. This is a brutal assault on your subconscious. For me personally then, this is a band that I consider a legend within the genre. It features musicians who have long since had nothing to prove to anyone.
Like just about every band that has been around this long, the gentlemen have gone through many line-up changes until it became unbearable and they decided to end their active career. It's a shame in a way, but we will be left with great memories of many great concerts, tours, which were written in golden letters in the annals. If you like GRIDE, "Vyzobat" should not be missing in your collection.
There is certainly a piece of nostalgia in it, but mainly the music that burns and glows. It goes to the edge, and a little bit beyond it. It's extreme with its own handwriting and ideas. I have the CD version, which is released on L'inphantile Collective (the cassette is also released on this label, Insane Society will take care of the vinyl). The album has another dimension for me and that is the lyrics. It could also be written that GRIDE have fully hit my taste. The planet is slowly dying around us, every day we are losing more and more of nature. Humans are like an invasive species, like parasites. This point of view has something to it, and as a fan of old sci-fi books, I agree with it wholeheartedly. But let's get back to the music. Grindcore is, in my opinion, a very difficult discipline. It is very difficult to play it in a way that is varied, interesting, and not monotonous. The band managed to do all this very well. It's also thanks to the various stylistic detours, "atypical" instruments and most importantly the approach. I must also praise the sound, which is sharp and massive, dirty and clear at the same time. It's as if the band has taken all their ancient ideas and grafted them onto contemporary times. It's a classic, but played in a fresh and fresh way. For me personally it is very important and essential that I am not bored for a moment. I don't like different rankings and comparisons, I still think that music can't be evaluated by numbers or percentages, but GRIDE can easily go to the grindcore hall of fame. There is nothing to do but to say thank you, bow down to the ground and shove the new album into your head under pressure. Extreme music for me has always been about emotions, about conveyed moods, about reflection. I have to say again, this is what this pack does perfectly. I'm bopping to the beat, bobbing my head, remembering the wild gigs. They say that when something old ends, something new begins. It's true, GRIDE has decided to hibernate. And to say goodbye, they released the album "Vyzobat". I'll tell you one thing, my friend! If you're a true grinder or a hard corista, you gotta have this record. I'll sign it in my own blood! Ave DEAD HEAD! Greetings to Holland, hope you are doing well. I must admit that I was really looking forward to your new album "Shadow Soul". I met the band for the first time in Poland at a stock exchange, where we bought everything that had an interesting cover. And that's how I came across the album "The Feast Begins at Dawn". It was a pirated cassette recording, a couple of songs were missing, but you guys became my heart band anyway. Listening to the new record brought it all back to me. The sound and production is a bit more modern, but otherwise it's like the old days. Was that the point?
Thanks. I think ever since we started working with our current producer Erwin Hermsen, we got a more modern sound. That has a lot to do with some of his influences (from other producers). Just like musicians, sound engineers also have their examples, people they think create a great sound.
To me, having a more modern sound is not neccessarily a bad thing. Our music is still old style thrash, but in my opinion there is no need to bundle that with an 80ies underground production. I’m sure some diehards would love that, but there’s other bands already doing the nostalgic thing really well. I think it’s nice that people can actually hear what we play these days.
As for the pirated cassette version of our debut album… I know it exists, but I never knew that it was missing songs. It might be because it was taken from the LP-version. The LP had fewer songs than the CD.
I'll admit that when I first saw the cover of the new album, I was a bit shocked. A hooded figure with his hands and face covered in fire. I'm used to a lot of things, I listen to brutal death metal, but the motive has something. It makes me uneasy, I have to keep taking the CD in my hands and looking at it. The author is Vladimir Chebakov from Russia. How did you get together with him and how does the cover relate to the music?
Well, Vladimir is not yet our ‘Derek Riggs’, but we do think his eerie art fits our music really well. He makes great stuff. As for the process of chosing a cover… Unlike some other bands, we usually don’t have a huge concept in our heads for album covers. In our case we usually just check out finished designs by some artists and pick one that we think fits the music or album title. Shadow Soul is the second Chebakov-cover that we used. And if you ask me, it won’t be the last that he made for us.
I've always been fascinated by the sound of your old recordings. You were always cold, sharp, dark, you had the feeling of standing knee-deep in icy water and absolute darkness all around. But times have changed, technology has changed, we have the internet. How was the album "Shadow Soul" made, what studio did you record in? It's probably not true, but for me the recording has an analogue feel, it sounds really "old and fresh" at the same time.
Wow, quite a description you are giving there. I never thought about it like that. The freshness probably comes from recording the basics live and not retrying a song too many times. Shadow Soul was again recorded at Toneshed Studio in the south of Holland. Erwin Hermsen is the owner and he’s able to capture our wild music well. He also really understands band dynamics and is able to adapt to that very well.
Before that, we usually worked with Berthus Westerhuis. A well seasoned producer from The Netherlands who did many classic nineties death metal demo’s and album with bands from The Netherlands. Berthus was also a person that really insisted that we record things live. Our Kill Division album and also Swine Plague really have that live feel, just like our first studio demo that we also did in Berthus’ studio back in the nineties. Another factor is probably that we usually record our music just like we would perform it live. So... no keyboards, girlfriends on vocals or saxophone. Just guitars, bass, drums and raw vocals.
"Shadow Soul" is an album that captivated me mainly because of its atmosphere. I like when good old death metal is combined with thrash and darkness. A band has to have its own expression, a face if you will, and you have a really distinctive one. How does DEAD HEAD compose new material? I mean now the birth of the new material itself. The whole record is built on really great riffs.
Well thank you. Your analysis of our music contains some good points. Riffs have always been very important to us. Sometimes we concentrated on that so much, that we forgot that we also need a chorus or repeating theme to actually make it a song. The death metal influence can easily be explained by the fact that both guitar players in our band listen to death metal way more than thrash. And the atmosphere… well, I really think that we allowed ourselves a bit more freedom for this last release. We used some ideas that we didn’t dare to put on a full lenght album before. But since this would be somewhat of an ‘in between‘-release… we took on the attitude of ‘anything is allowed‘. So we have a lot of slower and more dark parts in the music this time.
About our writing mode: For the last few albums, it has mostly been one guitar player that wrote a song together with our drummer Hans Spijker. And after that, the singer usually rearranges some parts before he added vocals. For the next album, we really wanna start writing as a band again.
What did the return of Ralph de Boer behind the microphone mean for the band? You guys are a band that had multiple singers. I think you'll agree with me that the vocals are another instrument, and for everyone, including you, it's a prominent element in the music. Ralph has done a great job, I'll happily sign off on that (he's also great in my favorites BODYFARM). Still, I think he's the only member who hasn't been in the band since their early days. Why him and how did he fit into the band?
Well… let me first say that I would have prefered to always play with the same singer. That would have been a bit more consistent than changing them around every few years. But our old singer left the band several times, and more than one time this happened during the making of an album, which -of course- is not the best timing for a band. So when this happened during the writing and recording of Slave Driver, we were once again in that situation. And because we had made one album before with Ralph and were really happy with his performance on Depression Tank, there was really only one guy that we considered.
But there was one problem this time: Ralph was also in Bodyfarm, a really cool and promising death metal band from NL. Still, Ralph really liked the idea of joining us again. And to my great relief, the other guys in Bodyfarm gave it their thumbs up. Because they wanted Dead Head to continu and hear a few more albums from us. And am still very thankful to them for that.
Please tell us what the lyrics on "Shadow Soul" are about and where you get your inspiration for them. Who is the author? Do you stick to tried and tested themes, like criticism of blind faith, destruction of the human mind? What is the main purpose, direction and lyrical content of the album?
Dead Head lyrics often start with the idea for a song title/theme or sometimes a play of words. Psychology, religion and world downfall seem to be recurring themes in our lyrics. On the new EP, for instance, the song Caverns Of Fate is about that we all have a primitive and uncivilized side of our nature in ourselves. This is a part of us that we would like to hide, because we are not aware of it.
Traditionally our lyrics were written by our other guitar player Ronnie van der Wey. But since his return, Ralph has also greatly contributed to the lyrics. Him and Ronnie really have a good working situation, arranging the lyrics together and inspiring eachother.
I usually don’t write lyrics. But on Shadow Soul, I did a few lines for a song called The Run. And I did come up with the title of the first single The Age Of Hype, which is about how the world changed during the pandemic and how every body seems to need to chose sides and be part of the latest hype.
I'm an old metal dog and most of my dreams came true a long time ago, but DEAD HEAD is one of the bands I haven't seen live yet. I didn't make it in the 90s and now I have a lot of other obligations. Can we look forward to some of your touring in support of the new album? How are DEAD HEAD doing with touring at the moment?
We played countless single shows in our 35 year existence, but we only did some real touring in the first half of the nineties. These days, we all have other obligations that kind of prevent us from really going out on the road for weeks. Aside from our jobs, Ralph also plays and tours a lot with Bodyfarm. And our drummer is also playing in a band that does many weekend shows.
However… We do have some cool shows coming up. Like opening for Kerry King in June in the Netherlands. We’re also playing a big festival in Belgium in November with Vltimas, Dark Tranquillity, Primordial, Sodom and Triptykon. Plus we’re doing the warm up show for the Eindhoven Metal Meeting this year.
From Holland I like ASPHYX, SINISTER, THANATOS, SOULBURN of course, but they are all old bands. How does the scene work in your country nowadays? Do you go to clubs, festivals? And can you recommend some of your bands?
The Dutch bands that everybody remembers from the 90ies were really just the tip of the iceberg from a very creative and flourishing scene. Our friend Steven Willems from Belgium actually dedicated a book to it that is an interesting read.
For me… Brain Implosion was one of the best bands ever to come from Holland. I also loved Sempiternal Deathreign, Obtruncation and a ton others that you might have never heard of. Severe Torture should have become world famous. They were so damn talented from the start on. Entrapment was another great death metal band from NL. Unfortunately the founder broke up that band, because he thought they were becoming too populair. Then he started a new OSDM band called Savage, that again kicks ass.
These days there are many talented bands as well. Deadspeak is a great younger band that I would like to mention. Very talented and sympathetic guys.
I don't want to flatter you, but from the promo photos you look like a nice bunch of guys. Your music gives off an air of detachment, a mutual chemistry between the musicians. Is it really like that in real life? Do you sometimes go out for a beer, party together, meet families, etc.?
The chemistry is definately there and helps creating this music. We’re really feeding off eachother. But funny enough we don’t really hang out together too much privately anymore. We are friends but we usually only meet for musical reasons. Outside the band everybody just has too many other things going on. So the other contact between us is usually through whatsapp, mail and phone. :-)
We're coming to the end and I'm wondering what DEAD HEAD are up to in the next few months? I've already asked about tours and gigs, but what about new music? Are you composing, do you have any ideas yet?
We have 5 songs ready for the next album, and we have an archive with 30+ years worth of unfinished songs. So I’m pretty sure we will be putting together some more albums in the near future.
