Interview - MASS BURIAL - Old school Swedish death metal from Spain.

Interview with death metal band from Spain - MASS BURIAL.

Answered Raúl Weaver.

Translated by Markéta, thank you!

Ave MASS BURIAL! Recently, you have released your new album „Breeding Plagues“. I am very excited about it. How are the fans and critics´ reactions on it?

Hell-o, yes, our new album is out there since the last week of November. It´s a bit soon yet, but at the moments all feedbacks and reactions have been very positive and it seems people do like it. Only a few reviews at the moment but with higher punctuation.

How do MASS BURIAL compose new songs? How does the process go when you created new material? Who is the author of your music?

Now times have changed and we all are very busy so we can´t create new music all together in the rehearsal room as it was in the past so, using technologies, I (this is Raúl, vocals and guitar) compose all music at home. I program drums and record the guitars (basics) and then I give these stuff to other guys and, once learned, they can add their own trademark and then we do a real recording with real drums, guitars,... In this album I have composed all songs, in the previous ones Chicote did some songs as well.

I have been currently listening to your new album “Breeding Plagues” and I feel like being closed inside a tomb with DISMEMBER, NIHILIST, ENTRAILS and INTERMENT. The album has a great Swedish sound. Where did you record the album and are you satisfied with the result? Did you have any comments on the final sound?

Thanks a lot, yes, this is the style we love to do and we know how to do it. We don´t want to invent the wheel and we know this style is what some of the mentioned bands did 30 years ago but this is our passion and we´ll keep on playing this stuff. Maybe there are some bands playing this for fashion, for the new revival, but we do it for passion and we don´t care what others can say about this. We have recorded everything ourselves and I think the final outcome is a bit better with every recording.

Who is the author of your lyrics and what are they about? Where do you find inspiration?

I always write the lyrics because it´s easier for me, as I also have to play the guitar, if I write them. The themes are tipical things for this putrid style you know, about death, macabre things, killers, wars and experiments,... Inspiration? It depends, sometimes from a book (although i don´t have time for reading), some horror movies (neither for watching Tv :), stories from internet,....

You have always had a great covers of your albums. Do you take a special care about how your album looks like? Your new cover was done by Juanjo Castellano. Why him? His work is excellent!

Yes, we are old school and, when we were kids, we didn´t have internet and we had to choose bands only for the covers. Usually, when you bought an album with a killer cover you were never disappointed. Nowadays, kids are unable to appreciate the feeling of having a vinyl (nor Cd) and staring at the cover, reading the lirycs,.... now it´s only downloading music or on youtube. A real pity!

And yes, Juanjo is our usual artist and he has painted all our covers (except one for a split with Humiliation). He also did the logo and he is a real fan of ours so the choice is easy.

You play a typical, classic old death metal. You have never changed your style and you are “orthodox”. Personally, that is one of the reasons why I like your band so much but have you ever thought about trying something else just to spice the music of MASS BURIAL?

Yes, we are very typical but, as I told before, this is what we wanna do and so we will keep. We have (or have had) many other bands where we´ve played Grindcore, Melodic death-metal, Crust, Metal,... so if we want to explore things we can do it with the other bands or with new bands we can create, but Mass Burial is what it is and we will never change, for good or bad. We will improve as musicians, we may get a better sound, but the idea is as it is. By the way, we have more speed and blast beats than any of the classic bands like Dismember, Entombed, Grave,... so, in a certain way, we have our trademark as well.

In the Czech Republic I often hear on concerts that there is not enough people there that the attendance on concerts is getting lower. I would like to know how it is in Spain. For us, Spain is a big country with many bands and promoters. There is a lot of abroad bands coming to your country to play concerts and those bands do not go to the Czech Republic. Do people in Spain go on death metal concerts? Do you prefer smaller clubs or bigger festivals?

I fear that´s the normal thing everywhere. In Spain, people go to concerts of big bands although the price is really expensive, but they always do a sold out. Also bands coming to play every fucking year as Arch Enemy, Kreator,... and they also sell all tickets and then festivals. Always the same bands playing in the same festivals and people like to go there (although they don´t know any bands) people go to festivals only to be drunk and for having fun. I fear I am too old but I can´t understand some things. You have more and more festivals every year. I really prefer small venues for playing and for attending. Of course we´d like to play in festivals as Obscene Extreme, Brutal Assault,... because those ones still have “the essence” i think.

For us, Spain is a strongly catholic country. Is that true? Is there a problem with this music with the Church while concerts? Does the Church influence the education at schools or the life? I cannot really imagine it because in the Czech Republic people are mostly atheist.

Yes, this country is still under the shadow of the church but, at the moment, this kind of music is not censored or controlled by them as in Russia, Poland,... Education is changing a bit, at least, now you can choose schools without religion as a subject which is a first step.

I think that “Breeding Plagues” would look amazing in vinyl. Have you thought about that? How do you feel about vinyl its sound? Are you a collector?

Yes definitely. Our label promised to do a vinyl edition within the next months so I still want to see it and touch it with my hands. The sound, for me, is better on CD but the spiritual thing that you get with vinyls is impossible to get with CDs. Yes, I do collect but unfortunately I don´t have a huge collection :).

Nowadays the majority of people download music online and they only use its digital copy. How do you feel about this issue as a musician?

I told you before, I am too old and I fear I don´t understand that. I need to have the physical copy. Internet is good for discovering new bands or music but when I like something I need to own it in my hands.

In the past few years there have been many bands trying to play the “old school death metal”. There are some who are just trying and they do not succeed but some of them understand what is it about. Do you have any favourite band who will successfully bring the “good old days” back again?

Yes, there are many new bands who really bring the vibe. Revel in Flesh, Graveyard, Entrails, Deathrite,...

Are there any albums which have caught your attention recently?

The new ones from the above mentioned, The new one from Morbid Angel (after their previous shit), We are the gore from Haemorrhage, the two new tracks I´ve checked from Pestilence´s new stuff are awesome as well,...

Do you know and listen any Czech bands?

Of course, bands like Brutally Deceased, Krabathor, Ahomado Granujo, and I guess some others that I don´t know the origin.

What are MASS BURIAL´s plans for the next few months?

We are rehearsing the new stuff for the new live set and we are just waiting for promoters or festivals or whoever call us to play. In March we will support Pestilence in a gig in Spain and we have some songs to be released by any label, maybe in a split with one more band. We want to release it this year as an apperitive for the next album that will be out maybe in a couple years.

Thank you for this interview and I wish you many sold albums, hundreds of crazy fans and tons of great ideas.

Thanks a lot for your support. I hope one day we can go to play to your country and we can drink some pints of your good beer and some shots of Becherovska (is it like this?)

Recenze/review - DIRTYPROTEST - Hellstorm (2017)

DIRTYPROTEST - Hellstorm
CD 2017,  vlastní vydání

Řekli mi, abych už nezdržoval, že nemají čas. Stáli nade mnou, já si kopal do zmrzlé země svůj vlastní hrob a těšil se, až konečně ulehnu mezi své nemrtvé přátele. Stačil jeden výstřel z pistole, lehký záblesk a průlet náboje skrz můj mozek.

sumarizace:

Asphyx says:

DIRTYPROTEST  shows us on their new album how good is Swedish death metal played in Ireland. This album broke me down and I was absolutely absorbed since the begging. It is like a magnet, full of misery, cold and death. Irish maniacs knows how to balance between fast and slow passages. I like the sound and the ideas. This record feels interestingly sad. It evokes memories of last possessions of man. We are just an ash and we will be ash again! As a whole this CD is a nice example of good work, furiousness and craziness. If you like the 90th in its best from you will be satisfied with this album. "Hellstorm" feels like a cut of axe right into a head. It will cut you in half. One half will go crazy for parties and the other half will be dead in the infinite misery. Swedish death metal from Ireland which will burn you with coldness! Amazing!

A few questions – interview with death metal band from Ireland - DIRTYPROTEST.

A few questions – interview with death metal band from Ireland - DIRTYPROTEST.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play , etc.?

Dirtyprotest started in 2006 as a solo project to produce music and colaberate with musicians online, line up to date is : Alan Hurley (Ireland) /music/production and Thomas Blanc (France)/vocals.Aurélien Fouet-Barak (France) /Lyrics

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

Our first release "Hellstorm" was written and pruduced in Cairo,Egypt by Alan, originally from Dublin/ireland and living in egypt, the vocal tracks were recorded and composed by Thomas in France,,it took about a year to fully finish 9 songs for the album, for the production it had to gritty, and for that swedish guitar sound, the legendary bosshm2 pedal was used on the album,a number of guests have also featured on the album from guest vocals to guest guitar solos.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

We originally planned on a free digital release online but we will be getting physical copies of the album pressed to cd this year and will be available to buy online

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

All the lyrics for the album were written by french man Aurélien Fouet-Barak who also sang guest vocals on a track on the album,,the topic for the lyrics was world politics,ww2/world corruption.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The artwork and the logo for the album was created by english artist Neil Edward.

In the modern age social networks have been great for bands to promote their music and to reach out to other musicians and find new bands,,definatly a lot easier that it was back in the day making cassete demo tapes and posting them out to labels,etc..

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

At the moment we have a label from france interested in releasing the album for us,its still early days so thats all we can say at the moment

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

We love a lot of oldschool deathmetal bands, anything from the early 90's.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

Yea, we have some good feedback so far, we have just released our album and are no promoting it online.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

For the moment as an online project we have no plans to play gigs

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

At the moment there are some new songs written for a new album,,this one will have more of a blackmetal influence and the new stuff is starting to také shape

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

You can contact us on facebook or you can listen to the album on band camp

Thanx for the interview.

Byli to taky metaloví fanoušci a měli nápad založit kapelu.

Já bych to zkusil jinak.

Do hry vstoupil internet, nové technologie, úplně jiný přístup fans k hudbě.

Byli to velcí fanoušci Tolkiena, a byli to oni, kdo dali kapele jméno.

Já z vás cítil pořád takové to staroškolské nadšení, touhu do toho dát všechno.

Zůstanete i nadále „old school“?

Zatím nemáme plány na další nahrávku. Chtěli bychom si zahrát nějaké dobré klubové koncerty v roce 2018 a máme už představu o turné koncem léta. To bude hlavně ve východní části Evropy, ale zatím ti nemůžu prozradit žádné detaily.

Děkuji moc za rozhovor. Přeji vám jen samé vyprodané koncerty, spoustu nadšených fans. Ať se vám daří dobře i v osobním životě a budu se těšit brzy někde pod pódiem. MORGOTH NAVŽDY!

Interview - MORGOTH - I'm still grateful to be on stage, having the opportunity to do music for people who love death metal.

Interview with legendary death metal band from Germany - MORGOTH.

Answered Harald Busse.

Translated by Duzl, thank you!

Ave MORGOTH! I admit, when began the mentions about your return to the scene, we had to celebrate it with friends. You used to be an absolute cult band for us in the age of our youth and one of the first death metal bands which come to us to Bohemia. I still have an unofficial cassette "Resurrection Absurd" from MG Records. For us it was hard to find anything at the time of socialism. How do you feel the old times? What was the first impulse to set up a band and how did you get the idea to play death metal?

Thanks for your compliments. It's always great to think about the old times. I think there was no first impulse. It just happened. Marc and me were together in school and one day we met Rüdiger and Carsten. They were metalheads too and had this idea about founding a band. Rüdiger already played drums at that time and together with Carsten who played guitar, they made their first musical attempts in a school workroom. When they asked Marc and me if we wanted to join the, we were immidiately excited. I played piano for 10 years before, i had some musical basics so i took over the guitar. Because Marc did not play an instrument he was forced to be the singer, haha. The idea to play death metal came later. At that time in 1987 the term death metal was not really established, so our first demo "Pits Of Utumno" was released under the term " Ultrathrash".

Albums Cursed and Odium from the 1990s, for me, many other listeners are absolutely cult. We had posters with you around the room, each girl loved someone else from the band, and we spent a long hours at the hi-fi tower. What really fascinated me was the sound of both recordings. Totally devastating. Do you remember how you recorded at that time? I wonder how it was at Woodhouse in Dortmund? Have you been "professionals" or your approach was more as "punks"?

We havn't been professionals at all. We were schoolkids. But schoolkids who wanted to do music as hard and brutal as possible. We recorded our first demo in our rehearsal room, wich was situated in a slaughter house (!) We had a good friend (Dirk Draeger) wich one should become the producer of all our following stuff. He had a own band and he had all the knowledge we needed, so he was from the very beginning involved in producing, mixing and recording our stuff. The first professionell studio we recorded was the Woodhouse Studio in Dortmund. It was a very relaxed athmosphere and we had a lot of fun there recording "Cursed"

For a long time I have one thing in my head. Who is the author of your amazing logo?

It was a guy named Torsten Gilsbach, he was a friend of us.

But let's go to the present. We all were looking forward to your comeback on the scene, but we were also very worried how it would go. How did you see your comeback? How did you actually get back together? You met in the pub, drank a couple of beers and said, "So, guys, what if we record the record again?"

The original idea came up in 2010. Sebastian phoned me one day to let me know , that in 2011, it's gonna be 20 years ago that "Cursed" came out. He spoke to Marc before and he asked me if i could imagine to play a couple of anniversary shows in 2011 to celebrate this happening. I said that i needed some time to think and i would phone him in a week. I called him back the next day and said "okay, let's do it". Since than, we have a very good time. We played a lot of festivals and club shows, had been on tour with Bolt Thrower and Incantation, we were invited to do a South America - tour and we have released a new record "Ungod" in 2015. So all in all everything went really successful for Morgoth.

The result was the album "Ungod" from 2015. I admit that even after some time I still consider this record as excellent and I still like to return to it. I think all old and new fans have to be happy. How do you rate this record in time? What are the responses and most importantly, how do the songs work live?

I have to admit that we are very satisfied with the result of "Ungod". From the very beginning, our aim was to record a true death metal record and despite the fact we had to part from Marc Grewe, we are really satisfied with the album. And this is of course not at least Jaggers merit who did a great job on "Ungod". It took a time until the fans appreciated the new songs, but today after Ungod is in the race for almost 3 years, the songs get more and more the same importence than the old once.

You may be surprised that I did not ask you about the new vocalist Karsten Jäger but everyone is asking. I would try it differently. Changing a vocalist at a big band always creates a lot of emotions. Personally, I think you could have not picked better, but I would rather be interested in how Karsten isin the band as a human? Are you a group who goes to beer together, chatting, talking about life? Or are you meeting only when you are rehearse new material? Do you think that Karsten will write lyrics for the new album (on "Ungod" he already wrote two, if I am right)?

Jagger has become more than only a musician to us. Unfortunately we don't meet besides the band activities, because we all live very scattered. He is a very enjoyable character and he is always to have fun. For us, he is the perfect choice and we are very happy to have him at our side. Karsten was lyrically involved in two songs on "Ungod". I'm shure there will be more lyrics from Jagger on the next Morgoth LP.

You are like a band (Herald and Sebastian) now veterans. Much has changed over these years, you're on stage, isn’t it? Is there a different approach for organizers, labels, fans? Into the game entered the internet, new technologies, completely different access fans to music.

It's true. A lot of things have changed over the years. The organisation, the technology, the whole surroundings are much more professional today. But one thing has not changed. And that are the fans. And that's why i'm still grateful to be on stage, having the opportunity to do make music for people who love death metal.

Your band is named after Morgoth Bauglir, a literary figure in the fantasy of the stories of Master J. R. Tolkien. How do you like the film processing of his stories? Are you a fan of Middle-earth? How was the idea of naming the band according to his work?

I have to admit that I'm not that familiar with the whole Tolkien universe. Of course I know the "Lord Of The Ring" movies, but back then it were Carsten and Rüdiger who choosed the name. They were big Tolkien fans, and it was them, giving the band the name.

It's been a long time since I saw you live. The last time was in 2014 with BOLT THROWER, INCANTATION in Prague. For me a „return concert“ which was unusually succeeded in all aspects. You did the perfect performance and I been totally chopped. How do you have it actually with concerts? I've always felt that kind of old-fashioned enthusiasm from you, the desire to do properly. How do you view concerts from a band's point of view? Do you prefer clubs or festivals?

For me personally, (and i think i can speak for the other guys too) clubshows are more interesting than festivals. I like the intensity of a club show. The proximaty to the audience, the heat, the sweat. This connection to the audience is difficult to reach on a festival stage, espacially when the stage time is in the early afternoon.

Since "Ungod" has been running several years. What about the new material? I firmly believe that we will soon find new records. Will you give us some details? Do you still stay "old school"?

We have no plans for a new record yet. We want to play some good club shows in 2018 and we have already the idea of touring late summer. This gonna happen in eastern europe mainly, but i can't tell you any details yet.

Thank you very much for the interview. I wish you all your gigs sold out and a lot of enthusiastic fans. A lot of success not only in personal life and I'll be looking forward to see you soon. MORGOTH FOREVER!

Recenze/review - STERCORE - Eternal Sunlight (2017)

STERCORE - Eternal Sunlight
MCD 2017, Slovak Metal Army

Hezky ostře, do krve, s pořádnou dávkou emocí.

Slováci chytli moji hlavu do svěráku a frézují mi do lebky další a další drážky plné ostrých riffů, devastujícího vokálu a hlavně asi tuny napěchované energie.

Asphyx says:

Imagine a wood crusher designed to crush human bones. You are chained like a pig with your feet up and when you see the wood crusher you will feel relief. These are the feelings you will have after listening the new MCD by Slovak death coreist STERCORE

Similar music is not very often in my music-player. I am more sceptical, death core is too modern for an old music fan like me, it is not natural for me. However, STERCORE came and smashed me into small pieces and I almost died. Even the first meetings felt like a face massage with a metal brush. Sharply, with a big portion of emotions and you are bleeding from you face.

The basis of the album “Eternal Sunlight” is death core which also has some groove and the necessary melodic passages. Of course, there is a great portion of accumulated rage. You can find all of this on the new album. And also great, modern sound and a great stylish cover. STERCORE simply rocks. No compromises, no crutches. They go straight to the point. Raw with the pressure in their songs. Although there are some passages slightly monotonous, this style just needs this. It must be so great and a total massacre when they play those songs live. Those Slovaks grabbed my head into a vice and they are cutting my skull with more and sharper riffs, the devastating vocal and most importantly tons of pushed energy. STERCORE convinced me of their qualities, they swept me away from this world and crushed me into the meat bone. Very nicely played death core which will burn everything!
