Rozhovor - BANISHER - Album upravujeme tak dlouho, dokud není nikdo, kdo by na tom chtěl cokoliv změnit.

Rozhovor s technickou death metalovou kapelou z Polska - BANISHER.

Odpovídal Hubert Więcek,děkujeme!

Recenze/review - BANISHER - Degrees Of Isolation (2020):

Ave BANISHER!!

Veškerou hudbu píšu já a nové album není výjimkou. Samotný proces vypadá asi takhle - já dám dohromady riffy a nápady, pak napíšu písně a nahraju demo verze. Nakonec jdeme do studia a nahráváme všechny nástroje. Samozřejmě pak pracujeme na vokálech. Podle vokálů pak píšeme rytmické linky a pak texty. Když je všechno hotové, nahrajeme vokály a přidané kytary, sóla a cokoli co je potřeba. Tak a tajemství je odhaleno.

Skvělý je zvuk celé nahrávky. Je temný, studený a ostrý zároveň. V jakém studiu jste album nahrávali? Mluvili jste jako kapela do výsledného zvuku, masteringu?

Album se nahrávalo v Invent-Sound Studio v Bydgoszcz se Szymonem Grodzkim. Byli jsme tam už potřetí. Předtím jsme tam nahrávali “Oniric Delusions” a “Scarcity”. Jo, my prostě potřebujeme mít perfektní album, bez keců.

Kdo je autorem coveru novinky „Degrees of Isolation“?

Jo, skoro nikdo si to už nepamatuje. Pak Facebook, Bandcamp. Teď je to Instagram. Ty nejsi na Spotify? Tak mi dejte vědět, až tam budete, ať si můžu poslechnout vaše nové album. Nechystáte nějaké speciální limitky, nebo vinyl? Jen CDčka? Pche.

To zase dělal Michał „Xaay“ Loranc. Kdo má nejlepší metalové logo? No, asi SLAYER.

Nikdo neví, kdy to skončí.

Ave BANISHER! I have not found the interview with your band in Czech anywhere. Could you please introduce BANISHER to Czech metal fans? Who are todays BANISHER?

Hello there! So Banisher was found by me and my mate from high school in 2005. Since then we’ve recorded few demos & EP’s, four full-length albums, played sereval tours and multiple festivals and singular gigs which would make over 100 shows in 20 different countries around the world. Interesting thing, our first show abroad was in Prague in Czech Republic in 2006. Throughout all those years many things have changed, we’ve developed as a band significantly, as well as a musicians. Since 2017 Banisher has a permanent line up, including current, live and ex members of Decapitated, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Belphegor, Acid Drinkers, Vital Remains, Hate, Redemptor and Shodan. That would be myself, Eugene Ryabchenko, Szczepan Inglot and Piotr Kołakowski.

I have received your newish record „Degrees of Isolation“ for review from the label SELFMADEGOD RECORDS and I am really delighted! I was waiting for good gravedigger handwriting, however, I did not expect that it cut me into pieces so much. How was the album created? How exactly BANISHER writes the music?

All music in Banisher was always written by me. The new album was no exception. The process itself looks pretty much like this – i gather riffs and ideas, then i write songs from those ideas and record demos of the songs. Then I send the demos to the rest of the band and we work on them to get the final versions of the songs. After that we enter the studio to record all the instruments. Then we are working on the vocal parts. We are writing rhythmic lines and then write lyrics, suitable to the designated vocal lines. When everything is done, we record the vocals and additional guitar parts, solos or whatever we come up with. Secret revealed.

The sound of the record is also really great. It is dark, cold and harsh at the same time. In which studio did you record the new album? Did you have a chance to say/argue something to your producer regarding the resulting sound?

The album was recorded at Invent-Sound Studio in Bydgoszcz with Szymon Grodzki. This was our third time there, before we have recorded „Oniric Delusions“ and „Scarcity“ there as well. Szymon knows the band for 10 years, we have a good connection, he knows what we want and he knows how to work with us. He often has very good ideas and I am always opened for advices and alternative ideas. Considering the final mixes, this was always a huge warfield. We are mixing the album to the point, where absolutely no one has anything to change or improve. This time it ended after 18 versions of mix and 3 versions of mastering. Yup, needs to be perfect, no excuses.

Could you reveal us who is the author of lyrics and what is their background? Where do you take your inspiration for topics in the lyrics?

The lyrics were written by me and Szczepan and are based on true events, that happened to me in 2017. Every song talks about the feelings and emotions experienced throughout the incarceration, custody, and after being acquitted. This album is very personal and emotional for me. You won’t find some bullshit stories here, this all has happened and was real. You have a real thing going on in here, and it’s precisely connected with the music, which was also written during that period and directly after I’ve returned to Poland.

You have always had the amazing cover arts. Is it very important for you, how the whole album, booklet, cover looks like? Who is the author of the cover of new album „Degrees of Isolation“? I really like his work. How was this cooperation formed?

The music, lyrics and the cover art with booklet on „Degrees of Isolation“ are like Holy Trinity. Everything is precisely connected here. The author of the cover and booklet, Łukasz Jaszak did phenomenal work here. He has been introduced to the whole album concept, has been given guidelines, lyrics, music and our initial vision of the cover art and created it all as he visualized it. We are insanely happy with his work, this is a masterpiece and everyone, who will see the booklet and all the things included there will know what I am talking about. Łukasz also did two videoclips for us and the photo session of the band. He is a really talented guy.

When I revealed to my friends that I am going to make an interview with you, everybody recommend me to ask, how the underground in your country works? Czech Republic is a small country; we have only a few death metal bands, which are really great. How do you perceive your scene? Do the fans go on concerts, to buy merchandise? Do the bands support each other?

Well, polish metal scene (cause it’s hard to name it underground nowdays) is very specific. We have plenty of great bands that are becoming known worldwide and are highly acclaimed, but not necessarily in Poland. We have great death metal scene, we have outstanding and very fast developing black metal scene. There are groups of bands that support each other, help out with the shows/tours, kinda hermetic circle tho. Polish metal fans are huge maniacs and are very clever and conscious of what they are listening to, although they are really hard to be pleased nowdays, also they like all the sensations and just love to trigger shitstorms in social media.

I am old metal dog, who listen to metal music more than 30 years. The time has so changed during these years. We have an internet, young fans only download mp3 and sometimes I really miss „the old good times“. How do you perceive the changes in music, at concerts etc.? Did you have to change an approach as a band?

All of this things are changing really fast. Remember myspace? Yup, probably no one does now. From like 2006 untill like 2012 it was a must have for all bands. Then Facebook, Bandcamp. Now Instagram. You’re not on Spotify? Oh, let me know when you guys are there so I can listen to your new album. Any special limited boxes or vinyl edition? Only CD’s? Meeeh. Got some cool merch? Only black T-Shirts? Eh, that’s a pitty. People are super picky those days, because everything is so easily accesible now, you don’t have to put any effort to get almost everything. That’s why bands need to be up to date and be familiar with all the new things going on in the industry or they will just start to dissapear.

Do you remember who created the BANISHER logo? Recently we talked about the best death metal logos with my friends in the pub. Besides of we were drunk, the result of this discussion was that we could not decide which logos are the best.

Our first logo was created by our former guitarist Michał Wyrwa. We were using it till 2013, when we’ve changed the logo to the current one, which was created by Michał „Xaay“ Loranc. Best metal logo? Probably Slayer. Easy to cut on your forearms.

And what about the BANISHER and concerts? How difficult is for you to organize the tour? Do you prefer to play in Poland or do you want to go also abroad? I know, everything is about the money, but I still think, the live shows are bringing to the bands more and more fans.

Speaking of now, the current situation is critical. No one knows, when it will end. But we are working on alternative options. Already we’ve had a proposal to play live stream shows, which are the only possible solutions for now. Hope that this is not going to last long. And before that – well, we are pretty busy musicians, I play lots of shows with Decapitated, recently I am helping out Acid Drinkers, Eugene joined Fleshgod Apocalypse, Piotr is getting really busy as stage/production manager (recently did Sabaton tour), so it’s not that easy to gather us and schedule dates for tour or even few shows. But we are working on it and want to get the best out of this band after releasing „Degrees of Isolation“. Fingers crossed.

Thank you for the interview and I wish you a lot of sold CDs, hundreds of crazy fans and tons of great ideas.

Thanks so much for the interview! See ya around then!

A few questions - interview with doom death metal band from Poland - FUNERAL CULT.

A few questions - interview with doom death metal band from Poland - FUNERAL CULT.

Recenze/review - FUNERAL CULT - Possession Done (2020):

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play , etc.?

Hi, everyone. Jacek from Funeral Cult here.

The band was formed in 1993. At that time band members wanted to play severe and slow music which brings aura of sorrow, melancholy and dark. Lyrics were focused on slavic people, their gods and funeral ceremonies and rites. After few months of rehearsals the band recorded demo tape „In Tristitia Et In Lacrimis” at Radio Lodz – 4 death/doom metal tracks. In 1995, at Radio Lodz Studio again, they recorded debut album „Korowody Cieni”. The album was officially issued by Lusitanian Music from Portugal in 1996. A few months later we signed a contract with polish label Millenium Records and all went wrong since then. Both parties ended in court. The trial lasted two years and the band was not able to do anything according to the contract conditions. This was the beginning of the end of Funeral Cult. Second album „Mystery of Possession“ was recorded but never released.

In 2016 Karol Arkuszewski (drums) decided to reactivate the band. After 19 years he meets Piotr Wilk (guitar) again. They start to reshape Funeral Cult and compose new tracks with fresh approach but with the 90’s soul as well. Completing the line-up takes one year and Sylwester Wilk (guitar) and Grzegorz Krom (bass) join the band again. After Przemysław Pawlak (vocals) refusal they had to find new vocalist. This place was taken by Jacek Rybak. In April 2019 the band recorded three tracks at Heavy Gear Studio and tried to go to the open sea. They contacted Lusitanian Music again. After portugeese label’s green light the idea of „Possession Done” EP was born...

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

We hired very good sound engineer Mariusz Konieczny (Heavy Gear Studio). He also is a frontman of Hellspawn band. We even played one live show with Hellspawn, so we knew each other as musicians. But we found out that Mariusz produced a few albums of the bands from our home city Lodz. We asked some questions, heard a few opinions and decided to put him in charge of the recordings. After that Heavy Gear Studio came to us with all the equipment and we recorded three tracks in our rehearsal room during the weekend. We just wanted to have some music recorded for promotion, nothing big. But during the recording we found out that we can achive more than we expected. Decision was simple and Mariusz took care of mixing and mastering as well. After all we had not only three tracks but the shape of „Possession Done“ was born at that time.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

Our label released 300 copies on CD as digipack.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

I am the author of the lyrics on „Possession Done“. After all I had a concept for these three tracks. I tell one story in three parts. The story tells about demonic possession, three stages of being haunted. All is inspired by „Necroscope“ book series by Brian Lumley and „The Excorist“ the book by William Peter Blatty and the movie by William Friedkin. „Necroscope“ tells us about very confident man who claims he is able to deal with the dead. Can hear them, talk to them and help them. But in the end he can’t recognize the upcoming threat, the deceive nature of angry demons. „Frost“ is very cold song. And it meant to be like that. Our Necroscope was cheated allready and he realized that during the song. All the laments and screams for help were only means for the purpose. „I am you are me, The Fury“ closes the trilogy. We have total connection of two beings, assimiliation. The Necroscope even welcomes lovely darkness at the end of the song. Is that true? Who is the furious one in the end?

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The logo was created by our friend Wojtas. And it wasn’t changed during the years. All the layout including cover art is drawn by Anna Jarzynska. Very talented young painter, tatooist, etc. You can see her drawings and paintings on Phoenix Pictures Art&Tattoo fanpage on Facebook or http://www.artstation.com/artist/annajarzynska website. It was, still is, a pleasure to work with Anna.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

Why to kick the open door? This was the first idea to contact the label who released our debut album „Korowody Cieni“. It was so good to know that Lusitanian Music (Lusitanian Productions then) is still on market after so many years. In short, I contacted them and they agreed to release the EP „Possession Done“ and go to this sentimental journey with us. We are so grateful they did it. We have a lot of support from them. They do very good job with promotion and distribution of the stuff. Reviews and interviews in music magazines, distribution across the Europe and promotion by PR agency Grand Sounds Promotion around the world. They put a lot of trust in us and we’ll see what will happen in the future. And yes, we are very satisfied with this cooperation on that stage of our way, even surprised. I can’t even tell how much we owe the Lustanian Music.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

Some say My Dying Bride, Celtic Frost, Anathema… I don’t know. It could be true. The inspiration is around us. It could be a movie, a book, an event or nature itself. We don’t have any favourite bands. We hear a lot of different music generes and styles, even non metal.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

We didn’t after all. I had to close the past and open the new chapter. And this is what „Possession Done“ is for. But we work on our third full lenght. Who knows what is the future of everything in the time of pandemia. But we need to have in mind what Lusitanian Music have done for us. Let say, there is no decision, yet.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

We’ve played some gigs in the past and a few after reactivation. Before the pandemia we launched a tour across Poland with our friends from Arcane Dust band. All of them were in clubs. We’d like to play some festivals or open air’s. Organizers feel free to send us an invitation!

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

To go as far as we can. This is the long term plan 😊 But what can I say? We’d like to record our full lenght in a short time. And I can’t promise it would be the same sound as it is on „Possession Done“. And I have an idea for this album. I mean the lyrics.

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

Of course: e-mail: funeralcult@onet.pl, facebook: @funeralcultband. And we are available in person for our fans during live shows. Hope we’ll see you soon!

Thanx for the interview.

Thank you very much, Jakub. It was a pleasure to answer your questions. It is a big support for us. Hey, everyone, get our EP „Possession Done“ and make your own opinion if you get possessed or not. Cheers from Poland!

Recenze/review - INFIRMUM - Walls of Sorrow Infirmum (2020)

INFIRMUM - Walls of Sorrow Infirmum
CD 2020, Inverse Records

fo english please scroll down

Novou desku "Walls of Sorrow Infirmum" lze zařadit někam na pomezí deathu a doom metalu. Album má rozhodně něco do sebe.

I jemu byly vzorem smečky typu PARADISE LOST, SABBATH, MY DYING BRIDE, ANATHEMA, MOURNFUL CONGREGATION. Smutek a zármutek, pochmurné ráno cestou do práce. Samota duše, vše plyne tak nějak samozřejmě, jako bych "Walls of Sorrow Infirmum" znal odjakživa, patří ke mě, je i mou součástí. Tady, v nekonečných lesích a před zraky všehomíra si doom metal neskutečně užívám.

Asphyx says:

It has become a habit, perhaps more addiction. Every day I go to the cemetery to talk to the dead every day. I was left alone and deserted. I take the smell of rotten leaves on the road, hiding in the shade of shaggy trees. I'm waiting for them to come. Meanwhile, I read the inscriptions on tombstones and I imagine who had which kind of life. I walk slowly and quietly, not to disturb the atmosphere of the place.

With the new album of Finnish INFIRMUM in my ears, I believed to eternity. I will exchange flowers and water, gravel sand on the grave. I stop for a moment, telling myself what I've been doing all day, and tears are coming in my eyes. I listen classic doom metal in the style of PARADISE LOST, SABBATH, MY DYING BRIDE, ANATHEMA, MOURNFUL CONGREGATION. Everywhere around is death and nothingness.

The moments associated with visiting close relatives, same as doom metal, cannot be described too much by words. Music is more powerful, it affects my mind quite differently. The novelty "Walls of Sorrow Infirmum" is more like a depressive image that will appeal to you in the gallery. I've been listening music for too long, so I'm going to trust more to my heart than to other things. From the new album under which Mr. Timo Solonen is signed is again possible to feel great sorrow, the endless procession of survivors, death and solitude. The atmosphere is very dark and the listening really hurts. You know, I still think doom metal is more a state of mind than a classic metal style. Stop your steps, perceive the beat of a dying life. The world is suddenly black, gray like a morning in a deserted city. Dark and funeral are moods of the recording. So again tomorrow night, I'll take new flowers and open the cemetery gate. The Circle of Life and Death, End and Beginning, "Walls of Sorrow Infirmum" will play to my steps. Traditional, classic, atmospheric and infinitely sad doom /death metal, where you meet your own shadow!

Ave DECAYING PURITY! Nikde jsem s vámi nenašel žádný rozhovor v češtině. Poprosím tě tedy nejdřív, abys čtenářům, kteří vás ještě neznají, představil kapelu. Můžeš klidně začít úplně od začátku a provést nás celou historií DECAYING PURITY.

Zdravíme!

Pro ty z vás, kteří naší kapelu neznají - my jsme z Kadikoy, Istambulu a kapelu jsme založili v roce 2005. Jsme DECAYING PURITY a vydali jsme jedno demo, 4 alba a baví nás brutal death metal. Myslím že víte, kde najdete více informací.

Letos jste vydali stále čerstvou novinku „Mass Extinction of the Providential Ones“.

Finální podoba nám trvala až do léta 2019.

Nebýt už pán v letech, asi bych to i udělal.

Kdo je autorem textů na „Mass Extinction of the Providential Ones“? A o čem pojednávají?

Kdo je podepsán pod obalem novinky „Mass Extinction of the Providential Ones“?

Pablovi jsme řekli, co si představujeme a on odvedl skvělou práci.

A proč zrovna brutální death metal? Není to zrovna styl, který by vám získal velkou „slávu“.

Protože si užíváme poslouchání, produkci a hraní v tomhle stylu. Nic víc.

Pocházíte z Turecka a hrajete extrémní death metal.

Jdu si vaši novou desku „Mass Extinction of the Providential Ones“ znovu pustit. Zaslouží si to. Přeji vám vše nejlepší i v osobním životě.

Ave DECAYING PURITY! I have never found any interview with you in Czech language. I will ask you first to introduce the band to the readers who do not know you yet. You can start from the beginning and take us throw the whole history of DECAYING PURITY.

Greetings!.
For those who have not been familiar with the band so far, we are from Kadıkoy, Istanbul and appeared in 2005. We are Decaying Purity, who has released 1 demo, 4 full lengths and continues to enjoy brutal death metal. I think you know where to get more detailed information.

This year, you have just released the new album „Mass Extinction of the Providential Ones“. Again, it's a dark, harsh and honest death metal. Did you access to the recording process differently than last time or did you choose verified practices?

We did not follow a different path. After the 3rd album, ideas started to accumulate slowly and the album took the final form like the one in 2019 summer. After we have done enough practice to the completed songs as before, we started recording due to October. Everything was actually like the previous album processes. This time, the writing process took a little longer, because of the intensity of everyone's private life, other projects, etc.

The new album seems to me more complicated, perhaps initially less accessible, at the same time incredibly dark and evil. Was it intentional? How did the album originate and how did you compose the music?

It is possible to say that I am not someone who wants to formulate too much of the work we are doing. We make brutal death metal and the materials we want to write are generally suitable for these patterns. We do not follow a path consciously to be like this or so. Death Metal, which we have, is like this and the result in this album as you have listened.

I have a „Mass Extinction of the Providential Ones“ in my MP3 player and I have to say that this album literally engulfed me. These are not just great ideas but also sound is simply devastating. I'm sitting in the tram, and suddenly I find myself shaking my legs. I have a feeling to start moshing. If I weren’t so old, I would probably start to. Where did you record and who is signed under mastering?

During the recording, mixing and mastering process, we worked with our friend Ünsal Özata from Sound Damage Productions, which we have been working since our second album. We are pleased with the result. Everyone understands each other's language and for now this combination satisfies us.

Who is the author of lyrics on „Mass Extinction of the Providential Ones“? What are they talking about? Where do you get inspiration for themes?

Our vocalist Serkan is responsible for the lyrics in the group. The lyrics are all about total destruction, death, pain, worship, suffering and misery. Actually the inspiration is, when you look at the previous album (Malignant Resurrection of the Fallen Souls), you will realize that it’s the sequel of the previous one. On MRotFS, hell and heaven were fighting for the souls in Purgatory, now hell attacks to earth with that souls and destroyed the heavens.

Who is signed under the cover of „Mass Extinction of the Providential Ones“? I like his work very much. How did you choose the motif for cover?

For Artwork, we worked with Paolo Girardi as in the previous album. The album visual concept belongs to Serkan. We told Paolo about the visual in our minds and he did a very sick job again.

When we look back at the beginning ... What was the first impulse to found the band? And why the brutal death metal? It's not the typical style which can would give you great "glory".

Because we greatly enjoy listening, producing and playing this style, that's all.

You come from Turkey and you play extreme death metal. Our readers would certainly wonder how the death metal scene works in Turkey. To tell you the truth, so lately I hear only the great bands from there. Does this mean that the scene there is so strong at the moment? What about concerts, how many people coming to them?

There are good Death Metal bands that give importance to their work and make their name known in the international market. Concerts are also quite wild. People participate as much as they can. Our vocalist Serkan and his wife Gizem have an agency called “Mezar Organization & Bookings“. You can search the channels of this name from Youtube and have a look at the videos of some death metal concerts they have done so far and have an idea about the fire of the audience.

I have to ask. You live in Turkey, which is considered a strongly Islam country. You play death metal. Do you have any problems with it? Do you get space in TV or in newspapers? How is life in your country affected by Islam?

This is not a typical Middle Eastern Arab country, as you think. Here is Turkey, not an Arabic country. Yes, we cannot say that we are very pleased with the management, there is a form of management that we do not approve of, we do not like, but there is no environment in this country that will not allow us to play Death Metal and require us to do this job with a hidden cover. Sometimes I can say that the economy affecting us negatively. We don't have to find a place in television and newspapers, it doesn’t matter for us. Our target audience reaches us through the ways they can. One of the most ridiculous and silly problems I can mention is, who are claiming to be related to Metal in Turkey, like some zines, webzines, the concert promoters and etc. of doing business in this country, consistently producing and saw quite a lot of support in the international market fan base even learn formations think definitely knowingly and willingly ignoring us. This is the funny and painful thing, unfortunately. No one who has already put on the state and government. If things start to come to a very painful boil, then we have to start thinking about it.

From your music is possible to feel that you are influenced by American death metal school and as well by the old European bands. How do you feel about it as a fan? Do you prefer the original death metal of the 1990s or do you get inspiration as well from the new albums? If yes so I am wondering which bands had the greatest impact on DECAYING PURITY.

Until this time, we have consumed a lot of Death Metal producstions all over the world and there are many classic productions that have an effect on us, which I do not need to mention right now. But it's not just the classic 90s Death Metal or more modern eras that affected us. As I said before, I do not find it right to formulate and define this too much. I prefer listeners to interpret this.

What about you and concerts in general? Are you a band that goes for concerts anytime you can or you are picky about where you will play? Do you have a dream, maybe a group you would like to go with for a tour or festival, a city where you would like to perform?

For the past few years, we've been taking concerts a little slowly. This is not because we are selective, but as I have mentioned, all the members have a different density. I can say that we waited for the last album to be completed and released. So, as long as it comes with reasonable offers, we are not too selective for concerts. With the new album, we want to evaluate the offers that make sense to us and take part in concerts as much as we can. It can be a tour with any band which we can have a good time and enjoy the music they make. Not necessarily with a big band as long as we have fun and have good time. This is same for cities also.

I'm going to listen again your new album „Mass Extinction of the Providential Ones“. I have to say that for me personally, this is basically a perfect death metal work. Totally inferno. I wish big success to your record and to get this album to as many people as is possible. This album deserves it. I wish you all the best in your personal life. Whatever you do and the last words are yours. If you want to tell something to fans, labels, promoters, you have space here..... Thank you for the interview and I am looking forward to seeing you live!

If the music we produce is making sense for you and you like it, support it. Apply this to every other production you consume. Thanks for the interview.
