Vlastně ani nevím, proč jsem chodil na hřbitov každý den. Moji předci už dávno hnili ve studené zemi a náhrobky byly nakloněny do stran. Jakoby mě neustále něco do těchto prokletých míst přitahovalo. Jakási vyšší síla, temnota, touha po záhadách. Nějak podvědomě jsem cítil, vnímal celým tělem, že jednou potkám přízraky. Duše zemřelých, toulajících se navěky mezi naším a oním světem. Poslouchal jsem u toho debutové dlouhohrající album francouzských tmářů STAWBOUND. 

Stačilo mi několik prvních tónů a věděl jsem, že se jedná přesně o druh muziky, která koluje i v mých žilách. Sedával jsem na studených lavičkách, kýval se do rytmu a vychutnával si jednotlivé mrazivé melodie. Líbí se mi, že si kapela dala záležet na formálních věcech, jako je zvuk (Camile Giraudeau) i obal (Costin Chioreanu). Všichni odvedli profesionální práci a vy se tak můžete soustředit na hudbu samotnou. Ta je velmi podmanivá, návyková, záhadná a nebál bych se napsat magická. 


Syrový, tradiční death metal se zde potkává s chladným black metalem a v některých momentech i doomovými náladami. Skladby se mi pomalu dostávají pod kůži i do podvědomí. Mám to nastavené tak, že nechávám na sebe novou muziku jen tak působit. Pokaždé si nové, neznámé album několikrát poslechu a potom se rozhodnu, jestli budu o kapele psát. STAWBOUND si mě získali nejen svým přístupem, ale také nadšením a schopností navodit záhadnou a velmi temnou atmosféru. Jsem během poslechu opravdu na hřbitově, pomalu se stmívá a já čekám, co se stane. Také cítíte z hudby napětí, takový ten drive, pradávnou sílu a energii? Já ano, Francouzi jsou pro mě opravdoví, uvěřitelní, hrají si s jednotlivými melodiemi jako šelma se svojí kořistí. Zasekli do mě svůj dráp a ihned jsem je zařadil do nejposlouchanějších nahrávek měsíce. Líbí se mi jejich rukopis, výraz. Zkrátka a dobře, kapela přistupuje ke své hudbě velmi poctivě, s velkou porcí talentu. Ne, pánové nevymýšlejí nic nového, ani převratného, ale novinka rozhodně není jenom dobrým řemeslem. Naopak, je v ní něco navíc, jakýsi punc kvality. A také, což je pro mě velmi důležité, se velmi dobře poslouchá a rád se k ní vracím. V některých momentech si s touhle smečkou zavzpomínáte na kapely jako BOLT THROWER, AUTOPSY, CELTIC FROST. Těmi se nechali, dle mého skromného úsudku, tihle maniaci volně inspirovat. Vlastně ani nevím, proč jsem chodil na hřbitov každý den. Moji předci už dávno hnili ve studené zemi a náhrobky byly nakloněny do stran. Jakoby mě neustále něco do těchto prokletých míst přitahovalo. Ano, bylo to tohle album. Starosvětský, tajemný a záhadný death metal s temně podmanivou black doomovou atmosférou!

Actually, I don't even know why I went to the cemetery every day. My ancestors had long since rotted in the cold ground and the tombstones were tilted sideways. It's as if something kept drawing me to these cursed places. A higher power, a darkness, a longing for mystery. Somehow, subconsciously, I felt, sensed with my whole body, that one day I would meet ghosts. The souls of the dead, wandering forever between this world and the next. I was listening to the debut long-playing album of French obscurantists STAWBOUND. 

The first few notes were enough for me to know that this is exactly the kind of music that runs through my veins. I sat on the cold benches, swaying to the rhythm and enjoying each chilling melody. I like that the band took care with formal things like the sound (Camile Giraudeau) and the cover art (Costin Chioreanu). They all did a professional job so you can focus on the music itself. It is very captivating, addictive, mysterious and I wouldn't be afraid to write magical. 


Raw, traditional death metal meets cold black metal and in some moments even doom moods. The songs are slowly getting under my skin and into my subconscious. I have it set in such a way that I just let new music affect me. Every time I listen to a new, unfamiliar album a few times and then decide if I'm going to write about the band. STAWBOUND won me over not only with their attitude, but also with their enthusiasm and ability to evoke a mysterious and very dark atmosphere. I'm really in a graveyard while listening, it's slowly getting dark and I'm waiting to see what happens. Do you also feel a tension from the music, a kind of drive, an ancient power and energy? I do, for me the French are real, believable, they play with each melody like a beast with its prey. They stuck their claw into me and I immediately put them in my most listened to records of the month. I like their handwriting, their expression. In short, the band approaches their music very honestly, with a great deal of talent. No, the gentlemen are not inventing anything new or groundbreaking, but the novelty is definitely not just good craft. On the contrary, there is something extra in it, a kind of quality stamp. And also, which is very important for me, it is very easy to listen to and I like to come back to it. At some moments with this pack you remember bands like BOLT THROWER, AUTOPSY, CELTIC FROST. In my humble opinion, these maniacs were freely inspired by them. Actually, I don't know why I went to the cemetery every day. My ancestors had long since rotted in the cold ground and the tombstones were tilted sideways. It was as if something kept drawing me to these cursed places. Yes, it was this album. Old world, mysterious and enigmatic death metal with a darkly captivating black doom atmosphere!

A few questions - interview with death metal band from France - STABWOUND.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Hail, we are Stabwound from Normandy, France. The band was founded in 2006 when I bought a guitar and an amp and started writing songs with my High School buddy Yoann. We play Raw Death Metal which is a mix of thrash death and doom/blackened more atmospheric elements.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

The drums where recorded in a professional studios while all the guitars, bass and vocals where recorded in our home studio.

It was a difficult process as we started with a different line up, then COVID happen and I had to re record every guitar tracks when we got the project back on track after the pandemic.

Finally Camille Giraudeau (dodheimsgard/doedsmagheird) did the mixing and the mastering. Needless to say he did an awsome job at it, making our album sound like old school extreme metal with 2024 quality! This guy is a genius!


How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

We released 200 CDs and 100 LP with our label France Black Death and Grind.

Another 200cd will be released via Iron Blood and Death corporation, our Mexican label.

Both versions are available online !

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

I (Jeremy) write all the lyrics. I see songs as sonic movies, each part of a song being small „scenes“. Thus I like to write song that tell stories, sotries about ancient lovecraftian horrors, war, slasher movies type of tales or more vagues and open lyrics that people can interpret more freely.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The logo was created a while back by Greg from Visual Injuries.

The amazingly beautiful artwork was drawn by Costin Chioreanu who is such a talented artist. He meAde a name for himself with his esoteric, dreamlike landscape that come from his mind. Check out his other work for many famous bands, you will dig it!!

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

We chose to work with two labels to have more impact.

We are still fairly underground so having small but professional label both in France and in Mexico is greatly appreciated.

They do thing the old school way but are very supportive.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

I listen to suite a broad range of metal bands but the one iIdoloze are:

Iron maiden, Candlemass, Slayer, My dying Bride, Bolt Thrower, Celtic Frost and Tryptikon, Mayhem… those are the band that shaped my song writing the most!!

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

Well I tried all the big names, they never answered so I went to the one who where actually interested and contacted us…

It’s a shame that the big names only selected already established bands. So all in all the small bands have to do everything by themselve first before being picked by a big label.

Anyway, we don’t really care as our labels help us as much as they can and we are doing our best to grow as a band.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

Oh damn, I think I lost track of all the gigs we played since 2008….

I love the small bar gigs because they are raw and in your face, ear splitting volume, proximity with the audience… I love that

Festival gigs are also awesome cause you play on bigger stages in front of a more diverse audience.

Live performances is one of our strong point and each show is a battle to conquer the audience. When you come to see us be sure we will give everything we have to kick your ass hard. So yeah the next gig will always be our best!


What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

We want to establish Stabwound as a great Death Metal band. We strive to keep the flame of real, raw, aggressive and true metal alive.

We don’t care about money, about faking performance on tik tok, cheating in the studio or live to sound bigger.

What you ear on the album is what you get, straight, dark and catchy Death Metal. We don’t want to be innovators, we love true metal and we want to keep it alive in a world where social media, looks, gimmicks, or the size of the boobs of your lead singer, have more importance than the integrity of your music.

We believe in passion, honesty and integrity. That’s what metal is about for us and that’s what we will always do.

Světlo už jsem neviděl několik let. Nějak mě přestal současný podivný svět zajímat. Neustálé války, lži a přetvářky, falešné úsměvy mi začaly vadit. Čím dál tím častěji se zavírám do jedné staré opuštěné kobky. Vylézám ven jenom v noci a čekám na přízraky, až mi dají znamení, abych mohl přejít na druhou stranu, do země nekonečných stínů. Stalo se to právě letos, když jsem poprvé slyšel novou desku švédských maniaků REVOLTING.

O téhle smečce píšu již od jejich počátků. Jedná se o další z kapel Roggy Johanssona, tentokrát zaměřenou na hororovou tématiku, smrt i gore záležitosti. Vzduchem se začínal pomalu vznášet puch rozkládajících se těl. Zombie vylézaly z děr a toužily po čerstvé krvi. Přesně takové jsou moje první dojmy z této morbidní nahrávky. 


Švédi nadále táhnou kupředu náklad plný prašivých kostí. Dělají to s elegancí starých, zkušených hrobníků, kteří nemusí již nikomu nic dokazovat. Skladby mají jasné a zřetelné melodie, které mokvají čerstvou krví, vokál je zasažený nenávistí a hnilobou a bicí utíkají dopředu velmi divoce. REVOLTING dokáží být suroví, takovým tím ohavným způsobem, u kterého nadskakují víka od rakví, ale nebojí se i zvolnit a nechat vyniknout chladnou atmosféru ranní mlhy nad hřbitovem. Nová deska je záležitostí i povinností pro všechny fanoušky třeba takových PAGANIZER, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, EDGE OF SANITY, TIAMAT, HYPOCRISY, GRAVE i starých klasických hororových filmů. Pokud vám není cizí žádná lidská ohavnost a věříte na tajemno mezi životem a smrtí, tak neváhejte ani chvilku. Opět totiž dostanete poctivou porci smrtícího kovu, zahraného od srdce, opravdově. Pánové sice nepřinášejí nic nového, ale abych pravdu řekl, mě se jejich pozvolný vývoj v mezích záhrobních zákonů líbí a vyhovuje mi. Někdy, když jsem se vracel domů, abych ulehl do své oblíbení rakve a v ulicích byl ještě klid a tma, tak jsem nové album "Night of the Horrid" poslouchal. Neskutečně jsem si jej užíval. Ty melodie, pochmurnou a záhadnou atmosféru, ten tlak a pradávnou energii načerpanou hluboko v podzemí. Vracely se mi staré vzpomínky na exhumaci prašivých hrobů. Ležely v nich oběti násilných činů. A teď, když zase sedím u reproduktorů, se znovu probudily. Světlo už jsem neviděl několik let. Nějak mě přestal současný podivný svět zajímat. Neustálé války, lži a přetvářky, falešné úsměvy mi začaly vadit. Čím dál tím častěji se zavírám do jedné staré opuštěné kobky. I haven't seen the light in years. Somehow I've lost interest in the strange world of today. The constant wars, the lies and pretenses, the fake smiles started to bother me. More and more often I shut myself in an old abandoned dungeon. I only come out at night and wait for the ghosts to give me a sign to cross over to the other side, to the land of endless shadows. It happened just this year when I first heard the new album from Swedish maniacs REVOLTING.

I've been writing about this pack since their early days. This is another one of Roggy Johansson's bands, this time focusing on horror, death and gore stuff. The smell of decomposing bodies was slowly beginning to waft through the air. Zombies were crawling out of the holes, baying for fresh blood. Those are my first impressions of this morbid record. 


The Swedes continue to pull forward a load of mangy bones. They do it with the grace of old, experienced gravediggers who no longer have to prove anything to anyone. The songs have clear and distinct melodies that are wet with fresh blood, the vocals are tainted with hate and rot, and the drums run forward very ferociously. REVOLTING can be brutal, in that sickening way that makes coffin lids pop, but they're also not afraid to slow down and let the cool atmosphere of the morning mist over the cemetery stand out. The new album is a matter and a must for all fans of PAGANIZER, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, EDGE OF SANITY, TIAMAT, HYPOCRISY, GRAVE and old classic horror movies. If you are no stranger to human ugliness and believe in the mystery between life and death, don't hesitate a moment. Because once again you'll get a fair helping of death metal, played from the heart, for real. The gentlemen may not bring anything new, but to be honest, I like their gradual development within the confines of the laws of the afterlife and it suits me. Sometimes, when I was coming home to lie down in my favorite coffin and the streets were still quiet and dark, I would listen to the new album "Night of the Horrid". I enjoyed it immensely. The melodies, the gloomy and mysterious atmosphere, the pressure and the ancient energy deep underground. It brought back old memories of exhuming dusty graves. The victims of violent crimes were lying in them. And now that I'm sitting in front of the speakers again, they've been reawakened. I haven't seen the light in years. Somehow I've lost interest in the strange world of today. The constant wars, the lies, the pretenses, the fake smiles. More and more often I shut myself in an old abandoned dungeon. I only come out at night and wait for the ghosts to give me a sign to cross over to the other side, to the land of endless shadows. Morbid, swamping, raw and cold death metal from the north that will crush you to dust! Touch of the cursed corpse!

Pokaždé, když jdu kolem kostela v našem městě, tak mám hroznou chuť vtrhnout dovnitř, obrátit všechny kříže směrem dolů a znovu zapálit pekelný oheň. Nikdy to neudělám, raději zmizím do své studené kobky a poslouchám tam muziku, která je mému srdci vlastní. Mám rád starý prašivý black metal, vyrůstal jsem i na klasickém heavy metalu. Patřím ke generaci opravdových fanoušků, kteří to ještě nevzdali. Je to prokletí na celý život. Hudba, ve svém extrémním stylu, mi koluje v žilách již více než 35 let.

Brazilské maniaky CAMOS jsem si pro sebe objevil již v roce 2009, když se mi dostala do rukou jejich debutová nahrávka "Kaim 666". Líbila se mi atmosféra, rukopis kapely i zvuk. Nové album pokračuje tam, kde minule pánové přestali. Je pro mě velmi příjemné se vrátit po časové ose zpět a vychutnat si melodie, které se mi jako ostré hřeby dostávají postupně do hlavy. Novinka je majestátní, ale i surová, je v ní velké množství temné energie. Přesně takhle to mám rád, jdu si otevřít další pivo. 


Pokud jste jako já vyrůstali na kapelách jako MERCYFUL FATE, CELTIC FROST, MASTER´S HAMMER, ALICE COOPER, a samozřejmě VENOM i MOTORHEAD, potom by se vám mohlo líbit i druhé dlouhohrající album téhle smečky. Je po okraj narvané zajímavými melodiemi, hoří uvnitř a je ukováno z té nejkvalitnější oceli. Venku se zrovna setmělo a vypadá to, že bude brzy sněžit. Místo toho se spustí z nebe krvavý déšť. CAMOS jsou opravdoví, reální, uvěřitelní a dokáží napsat velmi podmanivé skladby. Cítím z melodií nadšení, takový ten feeling tradičních kapel, který se nedá naučit. Musíte jej mít v sobě. Brazilce bych chtěl někdy vidět naživo, musí to být ďábelská jízda na splašeném koni. Navíc se celým albem jako nějaký jedovatý had vine taková zvláštní nálada, která mě přitahuje. Jakoby někde v pozadí tepal ostrý neklid. Byl zrovna pátek a měl jsem kupodivu zase jednou volno v práci. Dobře jsem se vyspal a potřeboval jsem nějakou hudbu, kterou si narvu pod tlakem do hlavy. Jsem moc rád, že jsem potkal desku "Hide From The Light". Obsahuje v sobě totiž vše, co po dobré hudbě chci a vyžaduji. Vypil jsem několik piv, navštívil místní hřbitov a nechal do sebe nasáknout atmosféru celého alba. Stalo se na nějaký čas mojí součástí a už dnes, když píšu tato slova, vím, že se k němu budu rád a často vracet. Pokaždé, když jdu kolem kostela v našem městě, tak mám hroznou chuť vtrhnout dovnitř, obrátit všechny kříže směrem dolů a znovu zapálit pekelný oheň. Nikdy to neudělám, raději zmizím do své studené kobky a poslouchám tam muziku, která je mému srdci vlastní. Někdy mám pocit, že mi k životu stačí jen syrové maso, nějaké to pivo a podobné nahrávky. Pekelné black heavy metalové album, ukované z té nejkvalitnější oceli! Temnota, chlad a rouhání!

Every time I walk past the church in our town, I have a terrible urge to rush in, turn all the crosses upside down and relight the hellfire. I never do, preferring to disappear into my cold dungeon and listen to the music that is my own heart. I like old dusty black metal, I grew up on classic heavy metal too. I belong to a generation of true fans who haven't given up yet. It's a curse for life. Music, in its extreme style, has been running through my veins for over 35 years.

I discovered Brazilian maniacs CAMOS for myself back in 2009 when I got my hands on their debut record "Kaim 666". I liked the atmosphere, the handwriting of the band and the sound. The new album continues where the gentlemen left off last time. It's very pleasant for me to go back along the timeline and enjoy the melodies that gradually get into my head like sharp spikes. The new album is majestic but also raw, there is a great deal of dark energy. Just the way I like it, I'm off to crack open another beer. 


If you, like me, grew up listening to bands like MERCYFUL FATE, CELTIC FROST, MASTER'S HAMMER, ALICE COOPER, and of course VENOM and MOTORHEAD, then you might like the second full-length album from this pack. It's packed to the brim with interesting tunes, burning inside and forged from the finest steel. It's just got dark outside and it looks like it's going to snow soon. Instead, it's gonna rain blood from the sky. CAMOS are genuine, real, believable and can write very compelling songs. I can feel the enthusiasm in the tunes, that feeling of traditional bands that can't be taught. You have to have it in you. I'd like to see the Brazilians live sometime, it must be a hell of a ride. Plus, there's a strange mood that winds through the whole album like some kind of poisonous snake, which attracts me. It's as if there's a sharp restlessness throbbing somewhere in the background. It was a Friday and I had, strangely enough, one more day off work. I had slept well and needed some music to cram into my head under pressure. I'm so glad I met "Hide From The Light". It contains everything I want and demand from good music. I drank a few beers, visited the local cemetery and let the atmosphere of the whole album soak into me. It became a part of me for a while and even now, as I write these words, I know I will revisit it happily and often. Every time I walk past the church in our town, I have a terrible urge to rush in, turn all the crosses upside down and relight the hellfire. I never do, preferring to disappear into my cold dungeon and listen to the music that is my own heart. Sometimes I feel like all I need to live is raw meat, some of that beer and records like that. A hell of a black heavy metal album, forged from the finest steel! Darkness, coldness and blasphemy!

Potkával jsem ho každý den. Vždy upravený, slušný, pokaždé se na mě krásně usmál. Vyloženě rodinný typ, který často chodil se svými dětmi ven. Jenom jeho manželka měla smutné oči. Všichni jí ho záviděli. Je spolehlivý, šikovný, takového bych také chtěla, říkali jí. Jenže ona věděla, že dole ve sklepě, když se setmí, se odehrávají šílené, krvavé a násilné věci. Měnil se v lovce, jakmile slunce zapadlo. Jako vlkodlak ze starých časů, jako Doktor Jekyll a pan Hyde. 

Hudbu francouzských maniaků LIQUID FLESH sleduji již několik let. Líbí se mi, jakým způsobem přistupují ke skladbám, ke zvuku, jak hrají a jak na mě jejich desky působí. Není to jenom obyčejný death metal, ale spíše hororový film, který mě pokaždé vtáhne rovnou do děje. Stejně jako nové EP "Vestiges Abrutissants". Dávejte pozor, až půjdete tichou ulicí. Někdo číhá ve stínu. A má v ruce velmi ostrý nůž. 


Letos dostanete čtyři nové skladby, syrové a mokvající takovým tím klasickým, poctivým způsobem. A také jeden velmi povedený cover od ENTOMBED. Jejich tvorbou, stejně jako třeba takovými CELTIC FROST, AUTOPSY, CARCASS, UNDERGANG, se Francouzi volně inspirují. Samozřejmě, přidávají velkou spoustu vlastních nápadů a invence. Mám to s touhle skupinou vlastně jednoduché, líbí se mi od nich všechno. Zkrátka a dobře, také by se dalo napsat, že jsme stejné krve. Novinka to jenom potvrzuje. O skvělém zvuku (James Leonard - mastering), ale i všem ostatním (Gastric Luke - composition, mixing, artwork…) netřeba diskutovat. Dostanete prvotřídní materiál, který obstojí i v tom nejhlubším podzemí. Osobně se mi potom nejvíc líbí, že se jednotlivé songy velmi dobře poslouchají, rád se k nim vracím a znovu a znovu si je rvu do hlavy pod tlakem. Mají v sobě něco morbidně přitažlivého, jako to uměly kapely z devadesátých letech minulého století. Opravdovost, upřímnost, divokost i touhu ničit. Kosti jsou lámány v těch nejlepších rytmech (nový bubeník Acid Bapt odvedl také skvělou práci). Pokud jste, stejně jako moje maličkost, staří metaloví psi, kteří se dosud rádi přehrabujete ve starých archívech nebo jen milujete prašivou, plesnivou smrtící hudbu, tak neváhejte ani chvilku. Hraje se zde i pro vás. "Vestiges Abrutissants" je jako návštěva hororového filmu v letním kině, který se cestou domů změní v krutou realitu. Krev teče proudem a ulicemi se toulá strach. Koneckonců, jen ona věděla, že dole ve sklepě, když se setmí, se odehrávají šílené, krvavé a násilné věci. Měnil se v lovce, jakmile slunce zapadlo. Jako vlkodlak ze starých časů, jako Doktor Jekyll a pan Hyde. A teď to víte i vy! Hnilobný, prašivý death metal, u kterého vylézají mrtvoly z hrobů! Temný, krvavý horor ze starých časů!

I've been following the music of French maniacs LIQUID FLESH for years. I like the way they approach their songs, their sound, the way they play and the way their records affect me. It's not just ordinary death metal, but rather a horror movie that pulls me right into the action every time. Just like the new EP "Vestiges Abrutissants". Be careful when you walk down the quiet street. There's someone lurking in the shadows. And he has a very sharp knife in his hand. 


This year you get four new tracks, raw and swamping in that classic, honest way. And also one very hilarious cover by ENTOMBED. Their work, as well as such CELTIC FROST, AUTOPSY, CARCASS, UNDERGANG, are freely inspired by the French. Of course, they add a lot of their own ideas and inventiveness. I actually have it easy with this group, I like everything from them. In short, you could also write that we are of the same blood. The news just confirms it. The great sound (James Leonard - mastering), but also everything else (Gastric Luke - composition, mixing, artwork...) need no discussion. You will get first class material that will stand up even in the deepest underground. Personally, then, what I like most is that the individual songs are very easy to listen to, I like to go back to them and rip them into my head again and again under pressure. They have something morbidly appealing about them, like the bands of the 90s could do. The sincerity, the honesty, the ferocity and the desire to destroy. Bones are broken in the best rhythms (new drummer Acid Bapt did a great job too). If you, like my little one, are an old metal dog who still likes to dig through old archives or just love mangy, moldy death music, then don't hesitate a moment. It's playing here for you too. "Vestiges Abrutissants" is like going to a horror movie in a summer cinema that turns into a cruel reality on the way home. Blood flows and fear roams the streets. After all, only she knew that down in the cellar, when it gets dark, crazy, bloody and violent things are happening. He turned into a hunter as soon as the sun went down. Kobka, ukrytá ve stínu starých stromů, vydala konečně své svědectví. O utrpení, o bolesti. Uvnitř, za rezavou branou, se ukrývala shnilá těla v již značném stádiu rozkladu. Zatuchlý pach špíny, prašiviny a absolutního zmaru. Červi, pojídající poslední zbytky tkání, se usmívají. Kroutí se do rytmu nové debutové desky amerických maniaků FESTERGORE. Jedná se o divoký, plesnivý death metal ze staré školy, zahraný s nadšením, odhodláním a touhou ničit.

Rozdrtil jsem všechny kosti kladivem, stejným způsobem, jako na mě působí nové album. To si mě ihned získalo svojí silou, energií i schopností mě pohřbít zaživa. Poslední dobou kolem sebe vidím přízraky. Sledují mě ze stínu a kývají spokojeně hlavou. Koneckonců, hraje se zde i pro ně. Zombie lezou z děr a touží po čerstvé krvi.


Do nečisté hry vás uvede masivní a špinavý zvuk, spokojený jsem i se stylovým obalem (Lucas Korte). Už při prvních společných seancích mě nové album "Constellation of Endless Blight" rozemlelo na prach. Veškerá exhumace se odehrává v podobném stylu jako to umí kapely MORBID ANGEL, DEMOLITION HAMMER, IMMOLATION, SUFFOCATION, AUTOPSY, DEICIDE, MONSTROSITY. Pokud se vám podobná hudba líbí a uctíváte tento styl, tak neváhejte ani chvilku. Dostanete poctivou porci nahrubo nasekané tmy, šílenství a prokletí. Skladby jsou napsány s jediným účelem - totálně vás zničit, pohřbít zaživa, roztrhat na kusy. Je to smršť, tsunami ostrých riffů, chorobného vokálu a divokých bicích. Kolem skladeb se jako nějaké děsivé memento vznáší krvavá mlha. Jednotlivé motivy se mi zadřely pod kůži i hluboko do hlavy a velmi často jsem se rád k nahrávce vracel. Má v sobě vše potřebné, abych si vyčistil hlavu od zbytečností. Líbí se mi způsob, jakým kapela přistupuje ke své morbidní práci. Pánové jsou uvěřitelní, nekompromisní, opravdoví, reální. A tak se zase jednou dívám do tmy a postupně přidávám hlasitost. Mohu vám jenom potvrdit, že se nové album povedlo po všech stránkách. All the exhumation takes place in a similar style as bands like MORBID ANGEL, DEMOLITION HAMMER, IMMOLATION, SUFFOCATION, AUTOPSY, DEICIDE, MONSTROSITY. If you like music like this and worship this style, don't hesitate a moment. You will get a fair portion of roughly chopped darkness, madness and curses. The songs are written with one purpose - to totally destroy you, to bury you alive, to tear you apart. It's a whirlwind, a tsunami of sharp riffs, sick vocals and ferocious drums. A bloody fog hovers around the songs like some horrible memento. The individual motifs got under my skin and deep into my head and I liked to come back to the record very often. It has everything I need to clear my head of the unnecessary. I like the way the band approaches their morbid work. The gentlemen are believable, uncompromising, real. And so, once again, I look into the darkness and gradually turn up the volume. I can only confirm that the new album has succeeded in every aspect. Příběh čtyř stý osmdesátý sedmý - Moje umírající nevěsta

Mám nasazená sluchátka a nevím o světě. Kývám se do rytmu, hrozně to prožívám. Další album MY DYING BRIDE do mé sbírky. Musím mít všechno kompletní. Už několik týdnů se ptám prodavače, kdy už bude mít všechna alba. Musím působit otravně, ale oni jsou tady, v Music Records asi zvyklí. Mě podobní kluci jsou zde dost častými hosty. Netrpělivě čekáme, až se uvolní sluchátka. Zalezeme do boxu a držíme v rukou nová CD, aby bylo vidět, co posloucháme. Je v tom kus soudržnosti. Jsem hrdý na to, že znám nazpaměť všechny názvy, muzikanty. Jsem chodící encyklopedie, jako kdysi můj dnes již mrtvý kamarád Kytka. Často na něj vzpomínám. Co by asi říkal na směr, kterým se některé kapely vydaly? Jak jsem ho tak znal, pořád by byl nadšencem. Musím se rozhodnout. Jedno CD si nemůžu dovolit. Odkládám smutně do regálu, škrtám si v notýsku další jména do sbírky a před vchodem si musím zapálit. Je tu hlouček mě podobných. Jaký byl úlovek, zeptá se mě takový vysoký hubený kluk. Ukážu svoje kousky a očekávám smích. Něco jako, že tohle je muzika pro holky. Občas tomu tak bylo. Vždyť je to ukňouraný, čekal jsem, ale opak byl pravdou. 

Občas se to stávalo. Někdy jste zkrátka mohli jen tak na ulici nebo v obchodě potkat podobné blázny, jako jste byli vy. Metal nás držel tak nějak dohromady. Už to sice nebylo takové jako dřív, kdy se lidé poznávali jen podle triček, ale pořád jsem měl někdy štěstí. Jmenoval se Roman a ihned mi nabídl, jestli nechci zajít do hospody. Stejně jsem chtěl jít. Tenkrát jsem všem říkal, že můžu pít jenom v hospodách, které jsou ve sklepě. Jakože temný metal. Řeknu mu to, on se ale vůbec nesměje. Jen pokývá hlavou a jde se. Připojí se ještě jeden takový malý, již značně opilý metalista, který ale jen něco mumlá a není mu moc rozumět. Usedneme ke stolu a já vyndám svůj notes. Co to je? Zeptá se ten malej a začne se tomu děsně smát. Ty vole, jak by ti bylo, kdybys kolem sebe měl jen samý studenty, co metalu neholdují? Já si musím všechno najít v časopisech, dohledat v obchodě, v katalozích. To chce sebekázeň a trpělivost. Nejde sledovat všechno. Jak byl už na plech, začal mi nadávat. Naštval jsem se, nenechám ze sebe dělat blbečka. Chtěl jsem se zvednout a trošku začít strašit, ale nemusel jsem. Roman jej vyhodil. 

Povídej dál, řekl, jakoby se nic nestalo. Nejdřív jsem probral události posledních měsíců. Pokyvoval hlavou a pak mi napsal několik dalších jmen. Měl přehled, ale na rozdíl od jiných nemachroval. Měl v sobě takovou tu pokoru, která je vlastní některým chytrým lidem. Měl dobrou náturu, ale připadal mi nějaký smutný. Kecali jsme a z něj to lezlo jako z chlupatý deky. Potom přišla moje holka, sedla si vedle mě a hned jak se máš, co studuješ. Byl na právech a nebavilo ho to jako mě. K metalu se dostal před otce, který za komárů sledoval rockový kapely a postupně přecházel k tvrdším a tvrdším odnožím. Měl svým způsobem štěstí, dokonce dostával peníze na desky. Byl z velmi dobré a bohaté rodiny. Jen mi připadalo, že k němu byli všichni nějak chladní. To se mi mělo potvrdit hned o víkendu, kdy jsme byli pozváni na oběd. Zatím jenom pijeme a když jsme v nejlepším, tak mi začne vyprávět o své holce. Jaká je super, jakou má postavu, vlasy, jak ji má moc rád. Kýval jsem hlavou a na rozloučenou mu řekl, že bychom si mohli někdy vyjít všichni. Rozloučil se a museli jsme mu slíbit, že dorazíme v sobotu k nim domů. Napsal mi adresu.

Večer bývají některé nápady skvělé, ale ráno, když se probudíte, tak už tak dobré nejsou. Nikam se nám nechtělo, asi bychom ani nikam nešli, kdyby tomu nechtěl osud a nepotkal jsem Romana na jedné přednášce v Tylovce. Já tam měl ekonomiku, on nevím co. Každopádně stál jako nějaký černý vykřičník v rohu a díval se na lidi kolem. Pozdravím jej a on hned, jak se těší, jaký to bude super. A tak v pátek sedíme v hospodě s kamarády a pijeme pivo. Mluvíme o tom, že sliby se mají dodržovat a že to třeba bude dobrý. Mělo by, tenhle kluk působil slušně, pohodově. Jen jsem z něj měl takový divný pocit. V jeho chování bylo něco příliš smutného. My byli všichni samý vtípek, černý humor, pořád jsme se tlemili a když už nás něco sejmulo, tak jsme si zalezli do svých brlohů jako raněné šelmy. Nebývalo zvykem, aby chlapi o svých problémech mluvili nahlas. On ale naznačoval. Nakonec jsme šli. Pamatuji si, že ten den byl v ulicích vítr. Dokonce jsme potkali pár vyvrácených stromů. Žmoulám v ruce lístek s adresou a pomalu se blížíme. To je fakt tahle vila? Obrovský dům, jak z filmů od Agathy Christie. Temný a chladný. Zazvoníme a přijde nám otevřít nějaký pán v kvádru.

Už u vchodu pochopím, že tady je to úplně jiná liga, než jsem zvyklý. Pan otec má sice delší šedivé vlasy, ale jeho chování se vůbec do tohoto prostředí nehodí. Je příliš lidový, žoviální. Zato paní matka je upjatá. Ta tu musí žít už minimálně sto let, pošeptá mi blondýnka. Pije se čaj a Roman pořád nikde. První otázky jsou směřovány na to, čím jsou naši rodiče. Z toho si nic nedělejte, já jsem taky z chudých poměrů. Řekne nám tatík a směje se na celé kolo. Další sada dotazů je na náš vztah. Najednou se u stolu objeví sestra Romana. Kde je tvůj brácha, zeptám se a ona odpovídá skoro neslyšně. Je zatím ve svém pokoji. Tak já pro něj dojdu, nabídnu se. Asi mi chtějí něco říct, zarazit mě, ale nestihnou to. Vyběhnu jedny schody, potom druhé. Napadne mě, že bych si tu jako malý nechtěl hrát. Připadal bych si jak synek pana továrníka. Kurva, jsem kluk ze sídliště, kterýmu asi 150 krát rozbili brejle. Co se ničeho nebojí. Jenom cikánů, jak říkával Prcalík. Zaťukám a moje klepání se ozývá s až děsivou ozvěnou. Nikdo mi ale neodpoví.

Otevřu dveře a musím se chvilku rozkoukat. Uvnitř je děsný temno. Jen nějaká malá lampička v rohu. Tam sedí Roman v obrovském křesle. Jeho pokoj je velký jako byty našich rodičů dohromady. Na zdi má největší sbírku metalu, co jsem kdy viděl. Kolem jsou ale ještě jiné věci. Nejdřív se jich leknu. Jsou to různé masky, figuríny, všechno je očividně z hororů. Pěkná sbírka, řeknu a zeptám se ho, jestli s námi poobědvá, když už jsme za ním přišli. Co říkáš na ségru? Zeptá se mě jako první. Řeknu, že je hezká a milá, i když není ani jedno. Poděkuje, s povzdechnutím se zvedne a jde se mnou. Když dorazíme ke stolu (je to jak malý výlet), všichni mlčí. Blondýnka mi pošeptá, že prý asi pronesla něco nevhodného. Už se nesměje nikdo. Jenom já. Když jsou podobné vážné chvíle, připadá mi to vtipný. Pokusím se zahlásit něco o tom, že doufám, že nebude jídlo tak stejně chladné, jako zábava. Jenže nikdo se nesměje. Začínám si připadat jako v nějakém hloupém hororu. Začne se podávat první chod. Vypadá to dobře, a je to i chutné. Dojíme, madam konečně řekne nějaké téma k hovoru. Studium. No, děsná nuda. Přestává mě to bavit. 

Nakonec se zábava trošku rozjede, to když se zeptám na muziku. Zatím jsem potkával staré rockery s vráskami od smíchu, s pupkama a vždycky dobrou náladou. Takový ty umaštěný máničky z hospod a továren. Rebely proti všemu. Jenže jeho otec byl jinej. Uvědomělej. A rád nás poučoval. Vůbec mi nesedělo spojení s metalem a rockem. Tahle rodina byla všechno, co metalisti nesnášeli. Roman se asi chtěl trošku vymanit, vzepřít se, jen to vzal za špatnej konec. Když nám došla témata, zeptala se blondýnka na jeho dívku. Tak krásně si o ní vyprávěl. Kde bydlí, ona je také z Plzně? Nastane ticho. Potom nám jeho sestra pošeptá, že je několik let mrtvá, že s ní vlastně nikdy moc nechodil, že si to jen vysnil a pořád si myslí, že je živá a že s ním je. Zamrazilo mě v zádech i v břiše. Dáte si někdo víno (následovala přednáška o tom, jaké má odrůda rodokmen a její závratná cena). Naschvál řeknu, že bych raději pivo. Představuji si, že nás otráví, že nás sežerou. Možná jsme právě poobědvali své předchůdce. Nestane se tak, ale celý oběd i brzké odpoledne se odehrává v pochmurné náladě. 

Když odcházíme, stojí Roman v okně. Má bílou tvář, jako neživý. Zamává nám a smutně se usměje. Co to jako bylo? Hlásíme cestou do města. Pivo je jasnou volbou. V hospodě je pár známých, kteří jsou právě v nejlepším. Pokecáme, vyprávíme jim, co jsme právě zažili. Vy myslíte upíra Romana? Směje se jedna holka. Potom nám o něm vypráví, že s ním chodí do školy, že je divnej, že působí fakt jak nějakej démon. Hele, já poslouchám taky metal, ale pro mě to byla vždycky spíš zábava. Chápeš, nadsázka, jako v hororech. Vždycky jsem si myslel, že to tak berou skoro všichni. Jenže očividně ne. Když dorazíme na kolej, dám do věže jednu starou desku MY DYING BRIDE. Někde v polovině začne přeskakovat a zní to, jako by k nám někdo mluvil divným jazykem. Nějak se mi všechno dostane i do snů. Ráno všechno vyprávím své milé a ona na mě, to jsou ty tví kamarádi. Příště si fakt vybírej, s kým jdeš do hospody. Mám tak navěky tuhle kapelu spojenou s tímhle příběhem. Asi by vás zajímalo, jak dopadl Roman. Někde jsem slyšel, že se oběsil. Nejsem si s tím ale úplně jistý, někdy mám pocit, že ho občas vidím v davu, že sedí kousek ode mě v tramvaji. Nevím, ale Moji umírající nevěstu poslouchám pořád rád.

Ave GUTLESS! Hello to the Australian underground. Let's get straight to the important stuff. Your new album "High Impact Violence" is out and it is literally packed with honest, dirty death metal. How was the album made and how do you feel about it? What direction has GUTLESS moved in since the demo?

We started writing the record pretty much straight after we put out our split with Mortal Wound. Covid hit not long after that and the city we live in got locked down pretty hard so that kind of killed our momentum for a bit there. Eventually we got sick of not being able to do anything, so Tom and I started writing songs over Zoom together. It was an unconventional setup but we had to keep some sort of momentum up. I think we're all just more relieved to finally have it out after all this time. In terms of our direction, I think we've basically just tried to expand on the blueprint we laid with our earlier releases. We wanted a good mix of pure old school death metal and more groovy, brutal death inspired stuff.

I'm listening to the record right now and I have to write that this time it took a while to get into my blood. I put the album in my player, I'm listening to it in the car. I really like the sound of it. It's lively, organic, old school, and at the same time it's easy to hear. Where did you record it and who is responsible for the sound?

We recorded it at Goatsound Studios, which is run by Jason Fuller. We tracked the drums with him, and then our friends Jamie Colic and Noah Papworth came in and tracked the guitars and vocals with us. Joe tracked his bass at home and we re-amped it at Goatsound. Fuller mixed and mastered it for us - we put that man through the ringer in terms of making him do things he didn't want to do from an engineering and production standpoint (sorry Fuller!) but he killed it.


You'll probably agree with me that the cover sells. You guys have it pretty brutal this year. Who's the author? Personally I like the cover, I just wonder if it's "too" brutal. You know, there's an artificial intelligence on social media evaluating what's right and what's wrong. A lot of bands have gotten in trouble for covers like this. How did you and the author get together and what exactly is the theme supposed to convey in relation to the music?

Our good bud Jesse Webb (@jw.hardware) is responsible for the album cover and all of our other artwork. I feel like violent/brutal/off-putting covers in death metal are a dime a dozen these days and nothing really shocks me in that regard anymore but we wanted something that fit the music and a guy getting his head caved in with a brick felt pretty right. It's blunt and brutal and just a little bit dumb. I think it's still pretty gnarly even in a sea of hyper gory brutal death and goregrind covers but maybe I'm just biased. As for working with Jesse, we've been friends with him for a long time and he fully gets the brief of what artwork for this band should be, so that makes it really easy.

I put "High Impact Violence" over and over in my head and I think what I like most about the album is probably that hard to describe old school death metal feeling. We seem to be of the same blood. Who was and is your role model? Every musician started out somehow, there are role models that shaped their signature. What were yours?

In terms of early influences and role models, for me personally I'd say the early thrash bands were pretty big ones. I think just the fact that they were the first bands to kind of shed the grandiosity and theatrics of the metal that came before them and carry themselves with more of a DIY or punk ethos - just shithead kids playing the heaviest music they possibly could to whoever would listen.


How do you look at the current trend, widespread mostly among young bands, where they try to play as technically as possible, often putting into death metal, for example, saxophone, various keyboards and generally finding their way in a very complicated way. Do you enjoy such bands? I'm confused sometimes when I go to a gig and someone like that is performing. It seems like a jazz school exercise, but I end up not remembering anything at all. What about you and the current trends in death metal?

It's great that there are so many bands playing around with different takes on the style. I guess our only thing is that currently bands are either progging out hard, playing more cavernous death-doomy sort of stuff, doing squeaky clean tech-death or NSE-style brutal death, or just going full the knuckle-dragging hardcore inspired route. That's not to say we don't love any of that stuff because it's sick that there's such a diversity of sounds out there and there are plenty of bands we love doing that, but I guess we feel like our favourite styles of death metal are maybe currently under-represented. In terms of watching bands live, I'll take a more loose band that plays violently and energetically over a bunch of tech-death musicians standing still but playing flawlessly any day.

Going back to the beginning... What was the first impetus for you guys to put a band together in the first place? And why death metal? It's not exactly a style that would gain you much "fame".

Tom and I used to play together in a band called Sewercide back when we were younger. After that band ended Tom hit me up to try and write some songs together, and there were certain bands and styles that we'd always bonded over so we just tried to copy them, haha. And we just do it because we love the music, and love making this music together.


You come from Australia and play extreme death metal. I'm sure our readers would be interested to know how the death metal scene works in Australia? To be honest, I've been hearing nothing but great stuff from you guys lately. Does that mean the scene is very strong in your country at the moment? What about gigs, how many people are coming?

Yeah, we're really lucky that the scene in our city is so great. There's heaps of incredible bands we get to play shows and hang out with regularly, like Faceless Burial, Contaminated, Miserable Creature, Vile Apparition, Hormagaunt, Carcinoid, Algor Mortis, Aglo, Bludger and a whole heap more. It's really inspiring for us to be around so many talented and like-minded people. Gigs tend to do really well here, and we're pretty spoiled in terms of constantly having great shows on regularly.

From your music you can feel that you are influenced by the American death metal school as well as old European bands. How are you as fans? Do you prefer the original death metal of the 90s or do you draw inspiration from new records as well? If so, I'd be interested to know which bands had/have the biggest influence on GUTLESS.

We listen to heaps of different types of music (old and new) between us, but I'd say in regards to Gutless our biggest influences are the early American death metal bands, where thrash first became death metal. Bands like Demolition Hammer, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Solstice and Malevolent Creation were all pretty huge for us when we first started this band, as well as early brutal death bands like Suffocation and Cryptopsy.


We are coming to the end and that always makes me ask a slightly philosophical question. How would you define death metal and what does it mean to you? I don't mean now the technique of playing, but rather what it brings to you, takes, how you perceive it in relation to the fans. Did you grow up on it?

To me it's metal taken to its logical extreme - metal's a genre defined by its heaviness and death metal is people trying to make metal as heavy as it possibly can be, and pushing it as far as it can go in that regard. I think it's cool that it can be pushed in so many directions too - there are other styles that are maybe more limited in terms of where you can feasibly take it, but it's a genre that still seems to be evolving and that bands are still experimenting with. We are definitely not one of those bands, haha.
