Interview - MACERATION - An evil death metal tribute to darkness!


Interview with legendary death metal band from Denmark - MACERATION.

Ave MACERATION! Hi Jacob, here is Jakub (meaning Jacob in Czech). Hello to the Danish underground and thank you very much for the new album. I've been a big fan of your music since the 90's and I was really looking forward to the new album. I was also a bit worried because you know, some comebacks of old bands don't turn out so well. MACERATION are in great shape though! The new stuff kicks and cuts a lot! How was the new album created?

We started out the re-formation of Maceration just being me and Larsand not any other members just to see what would happen and if we could get any ideas for songs. It was cool to do songs again. Lars and I worked from our home studios. Writing songs, recording demos of each song and when we had the material ready in rough form the drums was recorded to that material in Fastbeat studios in Copenhagen. When drums was recorded we recorded all guitars and bass in our home studios and then everything was send to Dan Swano who would begin the mixing process and arranging the lyrics which he also got from us. He had free hands to decide and choose what lyrics he wanted for each songs. So it was quite exciting to hear in which songs the lyrics ended up. He actually nearly did not change anything in the lyrics and he recorded and arranged it and send one song at a time back to us before everything was done and he did the final mix.


You always had a great sound. Nordic, cold and dark, yet raw. The new one continues the line you set. But time has changed in the meantime. It's been 30 years since "A Serenade of Agony" and not only the recording technology has changed, but also the approach to bands and sound. How did you perceive these changes?

Very happy about the sound and production and it came out as we wanted. Its new and fresh but still very old school and also have a much better overall recording process and better mix and production than the debut – all that which was not possible back in 1991 when we recorded the first album and no one in the studio knew how death metal should sound. And yes – we use the Hm2 chainsaw pedal on the new album and got exactly the sound we wanted– and we actullay also did use that pedal back then 30 years ago, but well that production never became that great. very cool it came out that way. The first album never sounded the way we dreamed about - it was just like this back then where no one in Denmark knew how to priduce metal.

The cover is signed, as always, by the great Ola Larsson. On the cover there is a monster, a terrifying octopus that crawls out of the darkness. How did you and Ola get together and what exactly is the theme supposed to represent?

I wanted him to do the artwork because i love what he does. Got in contact by mail and he put it together. Awesome.


How did you put together the current lineup? You and Lars were probably the obvious choice, but I guess it was hard to convince Dan Swanö? Wasn't it? What about the new members? Did you know each other from the past?

We got in contact with Dan and told him about our plans. First he said no because he had given up singing and also he didn’t actually growl on anything since the Edge of Sanity days, so he said it was impossible, but he would for sure mix and produce the album. We thought about it for a while and worked on the songs and I got in touch with him again, and he said he had been thinking about it and would like to give it a try. And when he began to record the vocals he got very exited about it and loved growling again and had a lot of fun doing it. its incredible when you think about the fact he has not been growling for so many years. He sounds very much like back then – even better maybe, so its just so great to have him doing the vocals as on the debut album because he is just one of the best death metal vocalists out there. We asked Rasmus to do drums because he is a very good Drummer and got hold of Jan to do live vocals and some duets with Dan on the album.

I've always wondered why you guys went on "hiatus" for so long? MACERATION have been on the scene since 1990 and you have only recorded two albums. Why did you quit then?

We just stopped because we had other things to pirate in life. And the Line up back then was unstable. So we broke up.


I noticed, and not only me, that your new video features a new singer, Jan Bergmann Jepsen. Can you please explain what is the situation with Dan Swanö and his position in the band? Do I understand it right that Dan just recorded the album and maybe Jan will perform at the concerts? And could you please introduce the new vocalist?

Dan is only doing session vocals on the album. He doesnt want to be in a band or Play live. Only recordings. So we found Jan who is also from Esbjerg the town where Maceration is originally from.

What about MACERATION and concerts? The new record deserves a tour, don't you think? Are you gonna play live? Can we look forward to the concerts?

We played sone festivals here in Denmark and have some concerts coming up. We will Play Alcatraz in Belgium august 12. And we also have plans for a czech show in september.



If I remember correctly, MACERATION were quite a phenomenon for me in the 90s. I had bands categorized by country back then. Typical Dutch, British, German death metal, but from Denmark I knew mainly ARTILLERY (and of course everything KING DIAMOND touched). And you. But you guys didn't play very typically. You were different, very different. How do you explain that and how did you perceive your first record? Was it an tribute to Swedish bone crunching?

Maceration started as a fun project but developed into something more serious. It was a sideproject, and when I left Invocator I picked up Maceration and re-started that again for a year. The intention was to have a band beside Invocator to Play more brutal stuff in the vein of the bands from Sweden and Florida. We loved death metal do we also wanted to Play the style..

I guess we had some kind of role in Denmark, but we didn’t think about it back then – we just had fun doing Maceration. When we did the album and got Dan Swanö to do vocals and we where two members from Invocator we automatically got attention from the scene, because then people knew the album was serious business. But off course it was Invocator that pawed the way for both Maceration and also for a band like Illdisposed.


Jacob, before MACERATION, you were in the legendary INVOCATOR. You played technical thrash metal. That was an absolute cult for me! Can you please reminisce for us about your beginnings? How did you get into music? Why thrash metal and then MACERATION?

Because we loved death metal! It was what i also wanted to Play. We had some parts in Invocator which was more death thrash but never totally death metal.

Readers would definitely be interested to know what the metal scene and underground was like in the 90s in Denmark? And what is it like today? I have your beautiful country fixed as a place where great bands have always come from. By the way, your current movie scene is also excellent.

Back then i guess it was smaller than today but it was led back then by Invocator, Konkhra, Illdisposed and Artillery. Later bands like Hatesphere and Mercenary took over and today the scene is very Big with many names such as Baest who have brought Danish death metal out to the masses.


You're a great guitarist, I personally like your style a lot. The guitar is a beautiful instrument. I wonder who was your inspiration, who do you admire as a guitarist? Do you practice a lot? And what about MACERATION as a band? Are you professionals who just send each other demos over the internet or are you a bunch that still likes to meet in the rehearsal room and then go for a beer?

Thanks. The guitarists that inspired me most is probably Jeff Hannemann, Kerry King, Trey Azagtoth, Richard Brunelle, Rick Rozz and Chuck Schuldiner. We did all recordings without meeting bit off course we met and rehearsed in connection with the gigs we played. And yes we like beers

What does music mean to you? How do you perceive extreme styles like thrash metal and death? Are they a relaxation, a lifestyle for you? Feel free to look at this question from a philosophical point of view.

Music means everything to me. It’s a part of my life every day and it means a relief, entertainment, emotions, joy. It is very important and it kids shaped who I am also today Back from when I started listening to metal

I admit without torture, "It Never Ends..." is a great album for me, which has everything mixed in a literally killer ratio. The sound, the cover, but most importantly the ideas. MACERATION are back in full force. I wrote in my review that this is a diabolical death metal tribute to darkness. Thank you so much for the interview, but especially for your music! I wish you to have as many ideas as possible, that all the shows are sold out and that you are doing well in your personal life! MACERATION forever!

Ave MACERATION! Ahoj Jacobe, tady Jakub (což je česky Jacob). Zdravím do dánského podzemí a moc vám děkuji za novou desku. Jsem váš velký fanoušek od devadesátých let a na novinku jsem se hrozně těšil. Také jsem měl trošku obavy, protože znáš to, některé návraty starých kapel nedopadly úplně nejlépe. MACERATION jsou ale ve skvělé formě! Novinka hodně kope a řeže! Jak nové album vznikalo?

MACERATION jsme začali znovu skládat jen já a Larsand bez dalších členů, abychom zjistili, co se stane a jestli dostaneme nějaké nápady na skladby. Bylo fajn zase psát skladby. Lars a já jsme pracovali v našich domácích studiích. Psali jsme skladby, nahrávali dema jednotlivých skladeb, a když jsme měli materiál hotový v hrubé podobě, nahráli jsme k němu bicí ve studiu Fastbeat v Kodani. Když byly bicí nahrané, nahráli jsme všechny kytary a basu v našich domácích studiích a pak jsme vše poslali Danu Swanovi, který začínal s mixováním a aranžováním textů, které od nás také dostal. Měl volné ruce, aby se rozhodl a vybral si, jaké texty pro jednotlivé skladby chce. Takže bylo docela vzrušující slyšet, v jakých skladbách se texty nakonec objeví. On vlastně na textech skoro nic neměnil, nahrával a aranžoval je a posílal nám jednu skladbu po druhé, než bylo všechno hotové a on udělal finální mix.


Vždycky jste mívali skvělý zvuk. Severský, chladný a temný, přesto syrový. Novinka pokračuje v nastavené linii. Doba se ale mezitím změnila. Od uplynutí „A Serenade of Agony“ uplynulo 30 let a změnily se nejen technologie nahrávání, ale i přístup ke kapelám i ke zvuku. Jak si vnímal tyhle změny ty?

Se zvukem a produkcí jsme byli velmi spokojeni a dopadlo to podle našich představ. Je to nové a svěží, ale stále velmi oldschoolové, a také to mělo mnohem lepší celkový proces nahrávání a lepší mix a produkci než debut - to vše nebylo možné v roce 1991, kdy jsme nahrávali první album a nikdo ve studiu nevěděl, jak by měl death metal znít. A ano - na novém albu jsme použili pedál HM2 Chainsaw a dostali jsme přesně ten zvuk, který jsme chtěli - a ten pedál jsme tehdy před 30 lety také používali, ale ta produkce nikdy nebyla tak skvělá. Je moc fajn, že to takhle vyšlo. První album nikdy neznělo tak, jak jsme si vysnili - bylo to prostě tak, jak to tenkrát bylo, když nikdo v Dánsku nevěděl, jak se dělá metalová produkce.

Pod obalem je podepsán, jako vždy skvělý, Ola Larsson. Na coveru je příšera, děsivá chobotnice, která vylézá z temnoty. Jak jste se dali s Olou dohromady a co přesně má motiv vyjadřovat?

Chtěl jsem, aby se podílel na výtvarném zpracování, protože se mi líbí, co dělá. Kontaktovali jsme se mailem a on to dal dohromady. Úžasné.


Jak jste dali dohromady současnou sestavu? Ty a Lars jste asi byli jasnou volbou, ale přemluvit Dana Swanö bylo asi těžké? Nebo ne? A co noví členové? Znali jste se z minulosti?

Spojili jsme se s Danem a řekli mu o našich plánech. Nejdřív řekl, že ne, protože přestal zpívat a navíc od dob EDGE OF SANITY vlastně na ničem negrowloval, takže řekl, že to není možné, ale určitě by album smíchal a produkoval. Chvíli jsme o tom přemýšleli a pracovali na skladbách, pak jsem se mu znovu ozval a on řekl, že o tom přemýšlel a že by to rád zkusil. A když začal nahrávat vokály, strašně ho to nadchlo a znovu si zamiloval growling a strašně ho to bavilo. Je to neuvěřitelné, když se zamyslíte nad tím, že už tolik let growling nedělal. Zní velmi podobně jako tenkrát - možná ještě lépe, takže je prostě skvělé, že zpívá stejně jako na debutovém albu, protože je to prostě jeden z nejlepších deathmetalových zpěváků. O bicí jsme požádali Rasmuse, protože je to velmi dobrý bubeník a sehnali jsme Jana, aby na albu nazpíval živé vokály a několik dvojhlasů s Danem.

Vždycky jsem přemýšlel, proč jste vlastně „přerušili činnost“ na tak dlouhou dobu? MACERATION jsou na scéně od roku 1990 a máte na kontě pouze dvě alba. Proč jste vlastně tehdy skončili?

Prostě jsme přestali, protože jsme měli v životě jiné věci na práci. A tehdejší line up byl nestabilní. Tak jsme se rozešli.


Všiml jsem si, a nejen já, že ve vašem novém klipu zpívá nový zpěvák Jan Bergmann Jepsen. Můžeš nám prosím vysvětlit, jaká je tedy situace s Danem Swanö a jeho fungováním v kapele? Chápu to dobře, že Dan jenom nazpíval desku a třeba na koncertech už bude vystupovat Jan? A mohl bys nám prosím nového vokalistu představit?

Dan se na albu podílí pouze na vokálech. Nechce být v kapele ani hrát živě. Pouze na nahrávkách. Tak jsme našli Jana, který je také z Esbjergu, města, odkud MACERATION pochází.

Když už jsme u těch koncertů. Jak jsou na tom současní MACERATION? Nová deska si zaslouží turné, nemyslíš? Budete hrát naživo? Můžeme se těšit na koncerty?

Hráli jsme na několika festivalech tady v Dánsku a čeká nás několik koncertů. 12. srpna budeme hrát na Alcatrazu v Belgii. A také máme v plánu koncert v Čechách v září.


Jestli si dobře vzpomínám, tak v devadesátých letech byli pro mě MACERATION poměrně úkaz. Měl jsem tehdy kapely zaškatulkované podle zemí. Typický holandský, britský, německý death metal, z Dánska jsem ale znal především ARTILLERY (a samozřejmě vše, čeho se dotkl KING DIAMOND). A vás. Ale vy jste nehráli zrovna typicky. Byli jste jiní, odlišní. Čím si to vysvětluješ a jak si vaší první desku vnímal ty? Byla to pocta švédskému chřestění kostí?

MACERATION byl nejprve projektem pro zábavu, ale nakonec se vyvinul v něco vážnějšího. Byl to vedlejší projekt, a když jsem odešel z INVOCATOR, vzal jsem MACERATION a znovu ho na rok rozjel. Záměrem bylo mít vedle INVOCATOR kapelu, která by hrála brutálnější věci v duchu kapel ze Švédska a Floridy. Milovali jsme death metal, ale chtěli jsme hrát i tenhle styl.

Myslím, že jsme měli nějakou roli v Dánsku, ale tehdy jsme o tom nepřemýšleli - prostě nás bavilo dělat MACERATION. Když jsme udělali desku a sehnali Dana Swanö, aby nám nazpíval vokály a byli jsme tam dva členové INVOCATOR, automaticky jsme si získali pozornost scény, protože pak lidé věděli, že to album je vážná věc. Ale samozřejmě to byli Invocator, kdo připravil půdu jak pro MACERATION, tak pro kapelu jako ILLDISPOSED.


Jacobe, před MACERATION si hrál v legendárních INVOCATOR. Hráli jste technický thrash metal. To byl pro mě absolutní kult! Můžeš pro nás prosím zavzpomínat na své začátky? Jak si se dostal vlastně k muzice? Proč thrash metal a pak MACERATION?

Protože jsme milovali death metal! To bylo to, co jsem chtěl hrát. V INVOCATOR jsme měli několik pasáží, které byly více death thrashové, ale nikdy ne úplně death metalové.

Čtenáře by určitě zajímalo, jaká byla metalová scéna a underground v devadesátých letech v Dánsku? A jaká je dneska? Mám vaši krásnou zemi zafixovanou jako místo, odkud byly vždy skvělé kapely. Mimochodem, vaše současná filmová scéna je také vynikající.

Tehdy byla asi menší než dnes, ale tehdy ji vedli Invocator, Konkhra, Illdisposed a Artillery. Později to převzaly kapely jako Hatesphere a Mercenary a dnes je scéna velmi rozsáhlá s mnoha jmény jako Baest, kteří přinesli dánský death metal masám.


Jsi skvělým kytaristou, osobně se mi hrozně líbí tvůj rukopis. Kytara je krásný nástroj. Zajímalo by mě, kdo byl tvým vzorem, koho jako kytaristu obdivuješ? Cvičíš hodně? A co MACERATION jako kapela? Jste profesionálové, co si už jen posílají ukázky přes internet nebo jste partou, která se stále ráda schází ve zkušebně a pak jde třeba na pivo?

Díky. Z kytaristů mě asi nejvíc inspirovali Jeff Hannemann, Kerry King, Trey Azagtoth, Richard Brunelle, Rick Rozz a Chuck Schuldiner. Všechny nahrávky jsme pořídili, aniž bychom se potkali, samozřejmě jsme se pak sešli a zkoušeli v souvislosti s koncerty, které jsme odehráli. A ano, máme rádi pivo.

Co pro tebe znamená hudba? Jak vnímáš extrémní styly jako thrash metal a death? Jsou pro tebe relaxem, životním stylem? Klidně se můžeš na tuto otázku podívat i z filozofického hlediska.

Hudba pro mě znamená všechno. Je součástí mého života každý den a znamená pro mě úlevu, zábavu, emoce, radost. Je velmi důležitá a tvoří to, kým jsem i dnes od doby, kdy jsem začal poslouchat metal.

Přiznám se bez mučení, „It Never Ends...“ je pro mě skvělým albem, které má v sobě vše namíchané v doslova zabijáckém poměru. Zvuk, obal, ale hlavně nápady. MACERATION jsou zpět v plné síle. V recenzi jsem napsal, že se jedná o ďábelskou death metalovou poctu temnotě. Moc ti děkuji za rozhovor, ale hlavně za vaši hudbu! Přeji vám, abyste měli co nejvíce nápadů, aby byly všechny koncerty vyprodané a aby se vám dařilo i v osobním životě! MACERATION navždy!

Recenze/review - BEYOND THE VOID - The Machinist (2022)

Nemůžeš utéct jinak, než zemřít. Zla je kolem už příliš mnoho. Ranní zprávy na internetu, dezinformace, lidé s prázdným pohledem, pochodující ulicemi. Už se nejedná o děsivé představy vizionářů, ale o krutou realitu. Slabší povahy páchají sebevraždy a ostatní se toulají prostorem jako těla bez duše. Svět se řítí do záhuby a můžeme si za to sami. Staly se z nás stroje, šílené stroje bez emocí, bez duše, bez svědomí.

Na tenhle příběh z devadesátých let jsem si vzpomněl, když jsem začal poslouchat první dlouhohrající album francouzských death metalistů BEYOND THE VOID. Je stejně chladné, kruté a temné. Jako dávná vize jednoho spisovatele. Atmosféra nahrávky je velmi podmanivá, uvěřitelná, silná a šílená. Jako současný svět.


Pokud bych měl přirovnat hudbu těchto Francouzů ke slavnějším kolegům, volil bych jména jako CANNIBAL CORPSE, CARCASS, ANAAL NATHRAKH, THE BERZERKER, ABOYRM. Jedná se o velmi jedovatý a chutný koktejl, který je postaven na pevných death metalových základech staré školy. Přidávány jsou potom velmi vkusně black metalové i industriální technické vlivy. Výsledkem je velmi třaskavá směs, která vám doslova vybuchne v rukou. Skvěle ošetřený je i zvuk -  ostrý, čitelný, chladný a drtivý zároveň. Hrozně se mi líbí, jakým způsobem jsou skladby napsány. Nikde nic nechybí, nikde nic nepřebývá. Riffy se na mě sypou jako lavina z kostí, kamení a zbytků těl prokletých. Je pro mě hrozně příjemné chodit ulicemi se sluchátky na uších, nasávat atmosféru těkajícího města a užívat si hudbu. "The Machinist" je pro mě velmi zajímavým albem, ke kterému se rád a často vracím. Pokud mě štve všechno kolem, pokud udělám tu chybu a podívám se na zprávy, pokud je všude až příliš jedu, pustím si BEYOND THE VOID a vyčistím si hlavu. Zapomenout nesmím ani na parádní obal, který krásně podtrhuje to, co se na desce odehrává. Krutá, chladná, šílená smrt. Death metalový masakr lidské mysli!

You can't escape except to die. There's too much evil around. Morning news on the internet, misinformation, people with blank stares marching through the streets. It's no longer the frightening imaginings of visionaries, but a harsh reality. Weaker natures commit suicide and others wander the space like bodies without souls. The world is falling into ruin, and it's our own fault. We have become machines, mad machines without emotion, without soul, without conscience.

I was reminded of this story from the nineties when I started listening to the first full-length album by French death metallers BEYOND THE VOID. It is equally cold, cruel and dark. Like a writer's ancient vision. The atmosphere of the record is very captivating, believable, powerful and insane. Like the contemporary world.


If I had to compare the music of these Frenchmen to their more famous colleagues, I would choose names like CANNIBAL CORPSE, CARCASS, ANAAL NATHRAKH, THE BERZERKER, ABOYRM. This is a very venomous and tasty cocktail that is built on solid old school death metal foundations. Then added very tastefully are black metal and industrial technical influences. The result is a very shattering mixture that will literally explode in your hands. The sound is also well treated - crisp, clear, cold and crushing at the same time. I really like the way the songs are written. Nothing is missing, nothing is missing anywhere. The riffs are showered on me like an avalanche of bones, stones and the remains of the bodies of the damned. I find it terribly enjoyable to walk the streets with headphones on, soaking up the atmosphere of the flowing city and enjoying the music. "The Machinist" is a very interesting album for me and one that I like to come back to often. If I'm annoyed by everything around me, if I make the mistake of looking at the news, if I'm eating too much everywhere, I'll put on BEYOND THE VOID and clear my head. Not forgetting the awesome cover art, which beautifully highlights what's going on on the record. Cruel, cold, crazy death. Death metal massacre of the human mind!

A few questions - interview with death metal band from France - BEYOND THE VOID.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Hello ! We are Beyond The Void, from France. Since 2018, we play death metal which navigates between brutality and finess with oldschool, progressive and modern touches. Our first album “The Machinist” was released in November 2022.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

This first album was mainly self recording in the home studio from Antoine Grasser, guitarist and principal composer from this project. Drums were recorded at the Black-Up Rec Studio.

Jamz from Razorback Studio has produced the album.


How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

It’s our label, Great Dane Records, who has released 500 digipaks from this new album.

You can also find it in digital on Bandcamp, YouTube, Spotify and more other platforms.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

It’s Cyril COZZA, our singer, who wrote the lyrics. They deal with the destruction of the planet by men, who are both actors and spectators of their own extinction. Wars, madness, overexploitation are themes dealt within the album.


Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

It’s Sebastien MOCKERS, our first singer who created the band logo.

Laurent GREDER, painter and drummer from the death metal band Post-Mortem, has made all the paintings from the album The Machinist.

We don’t have any website and we mainly use Facebook and Instagram for our communication. the most important thing is the work around the music, but today it is not enough, it is also necessary to know how to communicate to make the band spread its music.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

The Machinist was released by Great Dane Records, a french label. We contacted him, he appreciated our project and proposed that we work together. It’s a good opportunity to work with a label for the fist album, it brings seriousness, and allows a communication with networks different from ours.


Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

We don’t idolise bands, but we appreciate a lot of bands, and each musician have differents influences. However, we all meet around bands such as Death, Cannibal Corpse, Obscura, Atheist. The inspiration comes from the multitude of influences that we each have and put together in our music.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

We went directly to Great Dane Records who agreed to release this album. He signed us while we were working on preprods.


How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

The band was found in 2018 and we played 8 gigs before the release of the new album.

The Machinist was released in November 2022 with a release party in the concert hall from Colmar in France with Mercyless and Post-Mortem.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

We work on the second album and we want to play a lot of gigs in France and beyond.
Metal is something that shall mainly live with gigs !

Příběh tří stý osmdesátý pátý - Zrada

Bylo mi dvacet. Měl jsem svoji krásnou holku. Začínalo jaro a všechno mi připadalo zalité sluncem. Po děsivé střední škole a skvělé nástavbě jsem se ocitl zase mezi techniky, kteří uctívali spíše materiální věci. Přesný popis, výpočty, bez úsměvu, poměrně nudné předměty. Ale proplouval jsem. Nebavilo mě to, ale do Plzně jsem se vždycky hrozně těšil. Mívali jsme už svoje rituály. Jako každé dvojice. Sraz na hlaváku před vchodem, kousek od bezďáků. Jedno pivko v hospodě U Husy a hurá na kolej, do postele. Doma to stálo pořád za prd, ale už jsem se s tím naučil žít. Přetrpěl jsem další hádky, další výstupy, pláč a nářek. Kdo nezažil, tak si neumí představit. To nemá moc cenu popisovat. Po brigádě nebo po práci na baráku, případně na chalupě, jsem  utahaný jezdil tmou za svojí milou. Dokázala můj život rozzářit. Už jsme spolu něco zažili, patřili jsme k sobě. Vypadalo to, že spolu zůstaneme. Už mě viděla po nočních můrách, už mě hladila, když jsem plakal ze spaní. Víc o mě vědět netřeba.

Připadal jsem si, že jsem toho zažil už hrozně moc. Problémy spolužáků z dobrých rodin, kteří řešili nová auta, byty, případně jakou diskotéku "ošukají", se mě netýkaly. Vzbuzovaly ve mě spíše úsměv. Měli jsme pečlivě vybrané kamarády. Zakládali jsme si na tom, že máme podobný vkus a že posloucháme podobnou hudbu, čteme stejné knihy. Volný čas jsme trávili v lesích, na nekonečných procházkách nebo po hospodách. Když byla chuť, zašli jsme na koncert a bylo to moc fajn. Na jednom jsme potkali i Vladimíra. Stal se naším známým, pak dokonce kamarádem. Bydlel na Borech na Máchovce a byla s ním děsná sranda. Obstál v mnoha pivních zkouškách, rádi jsme poslouchali jeho příběhy. Měl kamaráda, který byl svině. Chtěl být jako Vladimír, chtěl dosáhnout kvality jeho vtipů. Ale vždycky jenom paběrkoval. S divným pohledem, ze kterého holky nemohly. Děsil je. Pomlouval, byl slizký, když s ním zůstaly samy. 

Já vyrůstal v rodině, kde se všechno říkalo na rovinu a lež byla snad horší než volit komunisty. Kamarád Vladimíra, říkejme mu třeba Ivan, se nejdřív tvářil hrozně příjemně. Mě na něm ale bylo pořád něco divného. Po mnoha letech na brigádách, mezi dělňasy a na cestách, jsem měl čuch na křiváky. Byl s námi v hospodě, pokecal a za dva dny začaly o mě i o mé budoucí ženě kolovat divné řeči. Lži a pomluvy. Nejhorší zrada, která se vám může stát. Někdo, kdo se tváří jako kámoš, komu věříte, jste na stejné vlně a najednou vám vrazí nůž do zad. Tenkrát nebyly sociální sítě, tak se všechno řešilo na chodbách. Princip byl ale stejný. Jdu třeba k Darebákovi na oběd (rozuměj utopenci a pivo) a najednou si celý stůl ode mě odsedne. Co se děje, řeknu ještě veselý, protože všechny hrozně rád vidím. Jako vždycky. Tentokrát si ale vedle šeptají. A že prý svoji holku mlátím, že jsem satanista, že ona je divná a vůbec, samý kecy. Nedovedete si představit, co se ve mě dělo. Zrada. Zrada je nejhorší. Ten smutek, když nevíte, proč? 

Jak jsem blbej dobrák od kosti, tak jsem ještě Ivanovi dodával učení, výpisky, dělal za něj několik prací, pomáhal mu u zkoušek. Pořád se, i když hadovitě, usmíval. Jsem z principu spíše optimista a i když mi o něm ostatní říkali, že  je to debil, nevěřil jsem jim. V každém je přeci kus něčeho dobrého. Jak v kom, ale to jsem ještě nevěděl, že Ivan je skrz na skrz shnilý. Chodil jsem s ním ze školy, vyprávěl mi a pokaždé ze svých příběhů vyšel jako děsnej borec. Chtěl být tak urputně úžasný a skvělý jako Vladimír, který ale na rozdíl do něj opravdu dobrák byl, že to až bolelo. Ještě mu říkám, co jsem při obědě zažil a on, že je to hrozný, co někteří lidé dokáží. Byl jsem rád, že si můžu někomu postěžovat. Věřil jsem mu. Chyboval jsem. Já, který si o sobě vždycky myslel, že poznám lidi po pár chvílích. Hrozně jsem se mýlil. Dokonce jsem mu večer přinesl na pokoj pivo a pokecal. On mezitím rozšiřoval další lži. Jen tak, protože rád čerpal z lidského neštěstí. 

Poslouchali jsme tenkrát s manželkou hodně doom metal a možná to bylo i díky muzice, že jsme z toho byli hodně smutní. Vůbec jsme nevěděli, že proti nám někdo něco má. Nikdy jsme nikomu neubližovali, víceméně si hleděli svého. Byli šťastní s málem. Žádní boháči, ale jen obyčejná dvojice, kterých jsou stovky. Jdeme spát a je nám divně. Tak vidíš, povedlo se mu to. Cože? No, pokazil nám celý den, celý večer. Ale kdo? Usneme a máme oba zvláštní sny. Pořád přemýšlím, kdo by to mohl být. Druhý den je sobota a já nemusím jet makat. Spíme dlouho a odpoledne jdeme za Vladimírem. Ivan je, jak jinak, u něho. Vláďa je totálně v prdeli, Jeho holka se s ním rozešla. Někdo ji nakecal, že okukuje v bazénu kluky a že je skrytej buzerant. Ještě za ní dojdu a snažím se jí vysvětlit, že nám se děje něco podobného. Ale ona na mě začne hystericky řvát. Hele a to ti nedošlo, že Vladimír je v pohodě? Ty s ním chodíš a znáš ho nejvíc. Jen zabořila obličej do peřin a zamumlala, abych šel pryč. Nastal klasický problém, kdy spolu lidi nemluví.

Kolik zla by se vysvětlilo, kolik neštěstí by se nestalo. Uplynul měsíc a Vladimír se stal stínem. Zato Ivan zářil. A my byli tak hloupí. Dolejzal za jeho bejvalou, tvářil se jako ochránce. Ale lži kolovaly dál. O nás i o Vladimírovi. Odjeli jsme na několik dní na chalupu, tuším že byly zrovna jarňáky. Na chalupě se ještě běžkovalo a zářili jsme štěstím. Po návratu do Plzně nás ale čekal šok. Vladimír se v borským parku oběsil. Bohužel nešel nikdo kolem. Pohřeb je za týden v Mariánkách. Bylo to šílený. On byl opravdu kámoš. Nebo spíš, mohl jím být, kdyby dostal víc času. Blondýnka se šla vyzvracet a já ožrat. S Michalem a Blankou, všichni naštvaní, protože nás zradil i Vláďa. Pili jsme na něj, až jsme nemohli chodit. Zavítali jsme i do Studny, kde seděl Ivan a děsně se smál. Ty vole, jak se můžeš tlemit. A v tu chvíli mi všechno došlo. Posadili jsme se k jeho stolu a bez vytáček jsem se ho zeptal. Odpověděl mi, že vítězí jen silní, že pro slabé není na světě místo. Jak nějakej zasranej nácek.

Moji ruku držela Blanka i Michal a měli co dělat, aby mě udrželi. Zrada je hrozná, šílená a hrozně bolí. Když se na vás někdo usmívá, vy se snažíte pro něj udělat první poslední a pak je to jako blesk. Dlouho, opravdu hodně dlouho jsme přemýšleli, proč? Ivan dostal do držky, ani nevím od koho. Zlo nakonec vždycky zahubí sebe samo. Lidí se jím zalknou. Boží mlýny fungují. Společnost toho debila doslova vyštípala, že přestoupil někam do Prahy. Možná se z něj stal člověk s titulem a škodí někde jinde. Poučili jsme se. Za lidi mluví činy, nejen slova. Pamatujte na to. Já vím, dnešní příběh není vůbec veselý. Ale musel jsem jej napsat. Už jen kvůli Vladimírovi. Víte, takových postaviček se naším životem mihla velká spousta. Myslím těch dobrých. Vždycky nám dodaly odvahu. Se zlem se totiž musí bojovat. Jinak se začne moc roztahovat. Koneckonců, vidíme to každý den. Svět už jinej nebude. Opatrujte se a děkuji za přízeň.

Objevil se pokaždé na místech, kde se stalo něco zlého. Usmíval se. Byl stínem, nasával smutek a násilí. Uprostřed davu, ve kterém si natáčel umírající. U poprav i bouraček. Připomínal démona temnoty. Lidé o něm říkali, že není z tohoto světa. Poprvé jsem ho potkal, když hořel kostel. Stál opodál a díval se. Na jeho pohled nikdy nezapomenu. Ďábel má totiž mnoho podob. Stejně jako thrash metal.

Dnes se můžete setkat se spoustou retro kapel. Některé umí hrát, ale většině to zkrátka nevěřím. Poslouchám už stejně převážně staré nahrávky. A když zavelí k útoku AGGRESSION, stojím v první řadě. Dívám se znovu do ohně a nechávám kapelu, aby mi odtrhala všechno maso od kostí. Hergot, tahle deska zase řeže tou správnou stranou nože!


Novinka je jízdou na horské dráze, šíleným pádem do temnoty, u kterého můžete potkat Antikrista na každém kroku. Kanaďané hrají postaru, plesnivě, s takovou tou patinou ve skladbách, která se podle mého nedá naučit. Přesto nebo právě proto je nahrávka velmi pestrá. Melodické vyhrávky, masakrující úprky, jedovatý vokál. V kapele se sice vystřídala velká spousta muzikantů, ale to nic nemění na tom, že jsem se k desce rád a často vracel. Otevíral jsem stále dokola železná vrata do pekla a usmíval se stejně jako ten šílenec z úvodu dnešního článku. AGGRESSION vás rozdrtí ve stylu SACRIFICE, SLAUGHTER, DEVASTATION, INFERNÄL MÄJESTY, DEMOLITION HAMMER, MORBID SAINT, RIGOR MORTIS. Je to zkrátka masakr ze staré školy, který si v sobě ale udržel pověstnou černou jiskru. Jsem už línej starej pes a málokdy zvednu hlavu, pokud se objeví nějaká "zaručeně skvělá kapela, která hraje thrash metal", ale tentokrát mi hudba chutná jako ta nejshnilejší porce zkaženého masa. Jakoby mi někdo drtil hlavu velkým kladivem. Jsem rozsekán na malé kousky a tančím v děsivém rytmu pradávný rituální tanec pro vyvolávání zlých sil. Myslím, že se kapele povedlo skvělé album. Navíc se mi líbí zvuk, obal, zkrátka všechno. Není co řešit, ďábel má totiž mnoho podob. Devastující thrash metal, který hoří temným plamenem!

You can meet a lot of retro bands today. Some of them can play, but most of them I just don't believe them. I listen to mostly old records anyway. And when AGGRESSION comes on the attack, I'm in the front row. I look into the fire again and let the band tear all the flesh from my bones. Damn, this record cuts with the right side of the knife again!


The new release is a roller coaster ride, a mad plunge into darkness where you can meet the Antichrist at every step. The Canadians play old-fashioned, moldy, with a patina in the songs that I don't think can be taught. Yet, or maybe because of that, the recording is very varied. Melodic breakdowns, massacring runs, venomous vocals. The band may have had a large number of musicians, but that doesn't change the fact that I like to come back to the record often. I opened the iron gates to hell over and over again and smiled just like the madman in the opening of today's article. AGGRESSION will crush you in the style of SACRIFICE, SLAUGHTER, DEVASTATION, INFERNÄL MÄJESTY, DEMOLITION HAMMER, MORBID SAINT, RIGOR MORTIS. It's simply an old school massacre, but one that has retained its proverbial black spark. I'm already a lazy old dog and I rarely raise my head if some "guaranteed great band that plays thrash metal" appears, but this time the music tastes like the most rotten portion of spoiled meat. It's like somebody is crushing my head with a big hammer. I'm being chopped into little pieces and dancing to the eerie rhythm of an ancient ritual dance to summon evil forces. I think the band made a great album. Plus, I like the sound, the cover art, everything. There's no need to worry, the devil has many forms. Devastating thrash metal that burns with a dark flame!

Interview with legendary thrash metal band from Canada - AGGRESSION.

Ave AGGRESSION! Hello to the Canada! At the beginning of the conversation, I would like to tell you one short story. Sometime in 1993, I got perhaps a thousand times played a cassette from my friend. On one side was your "The Full Treatment" album and some punk on the other side. I was then orthodox thrash maniac, and I didn't take this album out of the player for a month. I didn't even know what the cover looks like or who you are. Then you came back, in a completely different lineup, I searched in the old box for hours to confirm that it was really you. So, the question at the beginning - Why did AGGRESSION stop several times their activity and how did the rebirth happen? If I'm right so the only original member is Denis?

Sasquatch: Hey Deadly Storm Zine, Denis “Sasquatch” Barthe here. Yes, I am the only original member from a band that saw the light of day in 1984. The answer is simple: prison, drugs, family life and having the ability to perform the original material at its face value prevented the band from an ongoing career. The rebirth occurred when promoters were more interested in booking AGGRESSION than my previous band CRADLE TO GRAVE. King Fowley from Deceased contacted me about playing Defenders of The Old festival in NYC and the rest is history. Finding amazing local talent was also a key factor.


I am an old dog, I formed my opinion on music in the nineties, when everyone recognized each band from other. Sometime a month ago a friend came to me and started to recommend some young thrash bands. I stared at him for a moment, shaking my head in disbelief, then saying, "If you want to hear a pure thrash, listen to "From Hell with Hate". The next day he returned, his eyes wide and repeated over and over, that he hadn't heard such a good sound for a long time. Where did you record the album and how did you achieve such a moldy analog sound? Did you edit songs anyway?

Sasquatch: All the tracking was done here in Vancouver, BC CANADA. We went to Park Sound Studio for the drums and Screen Machine Production for bass, guitars, and vocals. Mixing and mastering was done by Ryan Vincent Mullins at Apollo Audio Alt out in MISSOURI, USA. He was critical in the creation and replica of that “analog” sound you are referring to. Highly recommend him to any bands looking for pro quality at a decent price.

I still have the album on the stand in a place of honor and every time I need to clear my head from today's shits, I play it. It's like therapy for me. Do you know what really killed me? Cover! It's such a beauty that I had to order a T-shirt immediately. I know he was painted by José Antonio Vives; I just don't know who he is? I couldn't find information about him. How did you get together? And how did the idea for the theme come up?

Sasquatch: That’s all Dave Rotten from Xtreem Music’s idea. He is the one who put us in touch with Jose. And what a bang on idea! What a cover. We recently have been using my daughter *Madison Savoie* for artwork (2021 Field of Nightmares) however due to work responsibilities, she wasn’t available this time around. We will keep working with her in the future. I have been thinking about using the “From Hell” title for quite a few years however always felt something was missing. By adding the *With Hate* to the title, it truly represents where the world is at in 2022. We simply told Jose to capture something “busting out of hell…”. Did he ever nail it…


I remember that I was always fascinated by the old interviews with SODOM, where the redactor asked them how they recorded new albums. Mostly they answered that they met in the rehearsal room, got madly drunk and then make a new record. Not perfect, but with a great energy. How does AGGRESSION record? Is it still party or are you older settled gentlemen? :))

Sasquatch: I usually come up with the musical skeletons at home and then bring the material to our drummer Ryan Idris who filters the ideas first. Kyle Hagen our bass player then joins in and discuss time signatures and enhance the product with his extensive musical theory knowledge. Our lead guitarist Dave Watson then adds to the mix and provide different perspective on riffs, song structure and overall feel of the songs. Then bang, it’s done. Dave also wrote the instrumental “Precise Execution” and “Worthy of Death” (I added the lyrics) from our last record while Kyle wrote the instrumental “The Inner Circle”. Truly it is a team effort. I would not say that we “party” like we used to in the 80’s however there is alcohol and other party favorites involved in the creative process. You can fill in the blanks.


Who is AGGRESSION main composer? Is it Denis? Or are you all involved? And who has the last word? By the way, I must also mention the work of the Ryan on drums. That's kind of fire, this guy must have dynamite in his hands, right?

Sasquatch: I do most of the writing musically and pretty much all lyrics however as mentioned above, it is a team effort. No one has the last word, and it is a democratic environment where we use unanimous voting. If one doesn’t like a part, we change it. It does create some friction occasionally however we always come up with a solution. Our drummer Ryan Idris is key in the ongoing success of this reformed Aggression. And you will keep hearing from him increasingly. He is a multi-talented individual and a sought-after talent.

We recently interviewed German band PROTECTOR and veteran Martin Missy told us how great it is to see young guys in ragged jeans jackets at the shows. Thrash metal is experiencing a new boom, at least here in the Czech Republic. How does it look like in the Canada? And one more thing, please try to compare the current concerts with those in the 1990s. It is a big difference?

Sasquatch: Yeah, it is the same here in Canada and shows are often sold out even though maybe on a smaller scale than Europe. The interest is increasing, and the followers keep coming. I wish fans of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax would support local talent more however it is a quality over demand problem. If young bands keep working on their craft, improve their material and performance, metalheads will show up. The economy being in the tank doesn’t help either. As for your 80’s-90’s comment, those concerts of a long time ago will never be replicated and should not be. Different vibe, different time lived by individuals at a specific time of their lives. Let’s create a 2022 vibe and live in the moment. I personally would like to see more stage diving. That was fun!!


I must admit that I still have a few dreams that I want to fulfill. I'd like to see AUTOPSY live. And then AGGRESSION. But do you play in Europe at all? Generally, are you band which like to perform a lot or are you choosing carefully?

Sasquatch: AUTOPSY rules! We toured Europe on two separate occasions. Once with German metallers “Hateful Agony” in 2016 and again in 2019 with Brujeria, Venomous Concept and SANGRE. We played Czech Republic on two separate occasions and loved the fans’ reaction and hospitality. What a beautiful country with amazing people. Heavy Metal rules supreme out there!! We love playing and touring. Some of our best memories occurred on the road. We are due for another European adventure.

You will probably agree with me that your label Xtreem Music is doing a great job. The guys have the same taste for bands as I do! In addition, they also release vinyl, CD, cassettes. We fans are excited and if I meet them once, I will give them a deep compliment, but how do you see their work from the position of the band? Are you satisfied? And how did you get together?

Sasquatch: We could not be happier with Xtreem Music and the work Dave Rotten and team are doing. Over the years we have become good friends. He is a terrific guy. I forgot how we met and how it started but it was around 2015/2016 and we did three releases with Xtreem. Fantastic product and professional organization. We have nothing but positive comments about the work they do. Also, easy to deal with, down to earth, sincere, and humble.


I guess I'm not going to be wrong if I write that you'll be a lot like me. I mean during the day we work to make a living for the families, and as soon as it goes, we spend time by metal. And I chose, like you, the real, dirty one. That's why I met a lot of great people. Do you hold as a band together? I mean if you just go for a beer and talk. I have a feeling lately that everybody around (on example at work) just stares to the phones and then doesn't know what to say.

Sasquatch: well, you aren’t wrong. We kinda live separate live with separate friends however we meet at the jam space 3-4 times a week. If we don’t go, I personally miss the guys. I do see Ryan more often since he is dating my daughter Melody however, we often go see concerts all together and try to promote/attend local metal shows and be involve in the local scene. We do need to provide some attention to the ladies in our lives as well as family support/functions. That’s probably why we enjoy touring so much where we can disconnect, act like buffoons, do crazy stunts together and bond as a band. Work is also a big giant inconvenience.

You play old dirty thrash metal. And you play it exactly according to the old practices which I like so much. But the time has changed. We have a lot of new technologies, of course the internet, which is a good servant, but a bad master. What has changed for you as a band? Did you have to adapt, change your mind? Just because everyone can comment (express himself, or just spit) today everything without understanding it requires a completely different approach.

Sasquatch: the dynamic of the jam space is the same for me personally and it is where I feel the most “at home”. It is my sanctuary. The music is the same and we are still influenced by the same bands we were light years ago: VENOM, SLAYER, CELTIC FROST, BATHORY and company. What changed is social media and how you promote your band. It is a job, and we are still learning how to do it properly. Comments, positive or negative don’t bother us. We accept criticism for what it is however in the end we will keep doing what we are doing. No one ever told us what to do and it won’t change now. In that regards we are as punk as it gets. Time on earth is a privilege not a guarantee, you must live it as you see fit.
