Stopy vedou do pekla. A cesta je dlážděná nejen dobrými úmysly, ale také kostrami těch, kteří byli tak naivní, že věřili v dobro. Přitom dnes už každý ví, že nejlépe se mají poskoci démonů. Máme tu další album z australsko - novozélandské líhně. Shnilé a mocné. Naříkající, hlomozné. VASSAFOR. Jen to slovo zní jako samotná smrt. Ale dokázali ji pánové ve své hudbě opravdu zhmotnit?
Jak se to vezme. V současné době takhle hraje spousta kapel nebo se alespoň snaží. Zastřené riffy, vytváření postupného tlaku, ďábelské skřeky. Nepřehlední a zároveň přitažliví, takoví jsou VASSAFOR i letos. Měl bych ale pár výtek.
Deska je možná zbytečně dlouhá. I když na ní naleznete spoustu dobrých riffů a pasáží, tak mi chvílema lezla trošku krkem. Pořád čekám na zlo a ono nepřichází. Chtělo by to také lepší vokál, nějaký ten tlak, možná i ostřejší zvuk (tyhle kanály už jsou fakt ohraný). Zkrátka, podobný směr je v současnosti v death metalu chtěný a vcelku populární, ale já mám občas problém to kapele věřit. Jsou to samozřejmě všechno jen drobnosti, jinak je nahrávka velmi dobrá, ale když je poskládáte vedle sebe, tak nemohu sdílet velké nadšení, které kolem VASSAFOR panují. Připadá mi, že je všechno nahráno cíleně, s úmyslem znít - jako co největší peklo. Jenže ono když tomu nevěříte srdcem...asi víte, co myslím. Slyším zde odkazy na DEAD CONGREGATION (VASSAFOR jsou ale nepřehlednější, skladatelsky o hodně slabší a motivy si tolik nepamatuji), ale také již tradičně na kolegy AUROCH, IMPETIOUS RITUAL, ULCERATE, DIOCLETIAN, PORTAL, ABYSSAL. Pokud podobný čertovský death metal vyhledáváte, tak si nechte chutnat. Já se přiznám, že jsem už spíše přejedený. Kdybych býval bodoval číselně, dal bych slušných sedmdesát procent. S přihlédnutím k tomu, že mi "To the Death" příliš často v přehrávačích hrát nebude. Stopy vedou do pekla, občas se stane, že zabloudíte. V závěru jde ale o Smrt a ta tu pořád je!

"To the Death" je albem, které ve vás zanechá stejné otisky, jako to umí třeba takoví DEAD CONGREGATION. AUROCH, IMPETIOUS RITUAL, ULCERATE, VASSAFOR, DIOCLETIAN, PORTAL. Ano, jedná se o stylově hodně podobné dílo, které je po okraj narvané nahrubo nasekanou tmou. Pro mnohé bude tento způsob smrti až příliš nepřehledný, bude se ztrácet v komplikovaně vystavěných motivech, ale věřte tomu, že pokud máte rádi jako já rouhání v death metalu, nakonec dojdete svého cíle a spočinete. Podobná hudba se velmi těžko popisuje slovy, je totiž převážně o negativních pocitech, o našeptávání, o zážitcích spojených se setkáním s mrtvými. Málokdo už dnes pochybuje, že by existoval onen svět. Album v něm bylo nahráno, opatřeno drtivým zvukem, chladem a špínou. Přidán byl zajímavě řešený obal a samozřejmě smrt. Pokud tedy máte rádi hlukové stěny, disharmonii, okultní záhady a nekonečně mokvající bažiny, tak neváhejte. Temnota čeká! Velmi dobře.

"To the Death" is an album that leaves you with the same prints as DEAD CONGREGATION, AUROCH, IMPETIOUS RITUAL, ULCERATE, VASSAFOR, DIOCLETIAN, PORTAL. Yes, it is a very simmilar work, which is full of roughly chopped darkness. For many, this way of death will be too confusing, they will be lost in elaborately constructed motives, but believe that if you like death metal blasphemy, then you will find your goal and you will rest. Similar music is very difficult to describe in words, because it is mostly about negative feelings, about whispering, about the experiences associated with meeting the dead. Almost no one is doubt that the other world exists. The album was recorded there and have crushing sound, cold and dirt. Added was an interestingly designed cover and of course death. Mrtvoly naskládané na hromadu. Ohořelé kusy těl. Nářek raněných. Smrt je cítit z každého závanu větru. Takhle nějak si představuji pravé peklo. Poslední nadechnutí a odcházím na druhou stranu. Hraje mi k tomu prvotina polských death metalistů CANCERFAUST. Ostrá a nekompromisní. S atmosférou, kterou můžete jinak potkat pouze na bojišti v jedné ze zbytečných válek.
Temnota, hluboká a šílená nepropustná tma. Taková slova mě při poslechu novinky "Let the Earth Tremble" napadala jako první. Hrubozrnné riffy, spousta špíny a zkažené krve. Zvuk (Mariusz Konieczny) vás přiková ke zdi, všichni fanoušci starých shnilých a prašivých postupů určitě ví, o čem píšu. Obal (Dawid Figielek) i logo (Casus Artem) připomíná spíše severské kapely, ale nenechte se tím zmást. CANCERFAUST hrají spíše americký druh death metalu. A umí jej velmi dobře. Nebál bych se říct i démonicky.
Kapela má za sebou dvě EP v předcházejících letech. Čekal jsem první dlouhohrající desku s nedokonalostmi, jak už tomu často bývá, ale máme tu před sebou zcela dospělou kapelu, která přesní ví (a umí) co a jak chce hrát. Navíc se mi jejich nové skladby usadily vzadu v hlavě, hlodaly tam, byly jako nějaká choroba, která napadne celý organismus. CANCERFAUST se nechali inspirovat třeba takovými MORBID ANGEL, DEICIDE, MERCYLESS, MORTA SKULD, BOLT THROWER a dalšími smečkami, které přesně pochopili, o čem je pravá válka a temnota. Rozvíjejí původní myšlenky a postupy z devadesátých let po svém, s vlastním ksichtem a rukopisem. Mocné nástupy, ostré a studené melodie. Naleznete zde vše potřebné, co by v sobě měl opravdový a ryzí death metal obsahovat. Cítím zde i takovou tu syrovou černou jiskru, až magický a přitažlivý feeling. Tohle umí jen skupiny, které jsou zcela oddány tomu, co hrají. "Let the Earth Tremble" tak není jen perfektně odvedenou profesionální prací, ale i deskou, která se opravdu skvěle poslouchá. Pořád se na ní něco děje, je morbidně pestrá. Jako samotná válka. Zákeřná, zlá a ošklivá. Death metal, který vám vystřelí mozek z hlavy! Pekelná záležitost!

The first album of Polish death metalists CANCERFAUST plays for me. Sharp and uncompromising. With an atmosphere that you can otherwise meet only on the battlefield in one of the unnecessary wars.
Darkness, deep and mad impenetrable darkness. Such words came to me first when I heard the new record "Let the Earth Tremble". Coarse-grained riffs, lots of dirt and rotten blood. The sound (Mariusz Konieczny) nails you to the wall, all fans of old rotten and dusty methods certainly know what I'm writing about. The cover art (Dawid Figielek) and the logo (Casus Artem) are more like Nordic bands but don't be fooled. CANCERFAUST play a more American kind of death metal. And they know to play very well. I wouldn't be afraid to say demonically either.
The band has already released two EPs in previous years. I was expecting the first full-length record with imperfections, as is often the case, but we have a fully grown band in front of us that knows exactly what and how it wants to play. In addition, their new songs settled in the back of my head, gnawed there, they were like a disease that affects the whole organism. CANCERFAUST are inspired by such bands like MORBID ANGEL, DEICIDE, MERCYLESS, MORTA SKULD, BOLT THROWER and others, which understood exactly what real war and darkness are about. They develop original ideas and procedures from the 1990s in their own way, with their own face and handwriting. Powerful performances, sharp and cold melodies. Here you will find everything you need that real and pure death metal should contain. I also feel such a raw black spark, and a magical and attractive feeling during the listening. Only bands that are completely committed to what they play can do this. "Let the Earth Tremble" is not only a perfectly done professional work but also a record that is great for listening. Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Hail Jakub! I was wondering in which language to write back to you, but since I speak Czech, it will probably be easier for both of us. Cancerfaust was founded by Szymon Sądej and me at the beginning of 2013. Initially, we operated under the name Born To Rot. From the very beginning our goal was to play the classic form of death metal. By the end of 2013, many musicians went through the line-up and this was sealed by the tragic death of Szymon on November 12, 2013. A moment before that, Michał on guitar and Oktawiusz on drums joined the line-up. In the first half of 2014, Kornel on bass and Maciej on vocals completed the band's line-up. With this line-up we recorded the first two materials. Killing Spree in 2016 and Watching You Die in 2018.

Hail Jakube! Říkal jsem si, ve kterém jazyce Ti mám odepsat, ale protože mluvím česky, bude to asi pro nás oba jednodušší. Cancerfaust jsme založili Szymon Sądej a já na začátku roku 2013. Nejprve jsme působili pod jménem Born To Rot. Od samého začátku bylo naším cílem hrát klasickou formu death metalu. Do konce roku 2013 prošlo kapelou řada mnoha hudebníků, což bylo spečeteno tragickou smrtí Szymona 12. listopadu 2013. Krátce před tím se ke kapele přidali Michał na kytaru a Oktawiusz na bicí. V první polovině roku 2014 se k kapele přidali Kornel na basu a Maciej na vokálech. V této sestavě jsme nahráli první dva materiály: Killing Spree v roce 2016 a Watching You Die v roce 2018.
Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

There were several recording sessions and each of them took place in different places. We recorded the drums in Piła at our drummer's friend studio. The guitars and bass were recorded in Poznań, while the vocals were recorded six months later in a studio in Konin. This break was due to the total ineptitude of the music engineer who was recording guitars and drums. The guy had computer crashes and lost all tracks we have recorded. It took him several months to recover the data. Finally mix and master were made by Mariusz Konieczny at Heavy Gear Studio. I have told him how it should sound and what effect do we want to achieve.

Proběhlo několik nahrávání a každé z nich probíhalo na různých místech. Nahrávali jsme bicí v Pile ve studiu u kamaráda našeho bubeníka. Kytary a basy byly nahrány v Poznani, zatímco vokály byly nahrány o šest měsíců později ve studiu v Koninu. Tato přestávka byla způsobena naprostou neschopností člověka, který nás nahrával. Ten chlap měl nějakou poruchu počítače a ztratil všechny nahrané skladby. Obnovení dat mu trvalo několik měsíců. Nakonec začal mixovat a mastrovat Mariusz Konieczny z Heavy Gear Studio. Dal jsem mu pokyny, jak by měl materiál znít a jaký efekt chceme dosáhnout.
How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?
Eng.
As far as I know, the album was released in 300 copies at the moment. Unfortunately, the pandemic situation forces us and the label to act carefully. There is no point in producing large amounts of CDs when people are focused on not losing their jobs. As soon as we know how the selling is going, we will think about the repres and pressing the vinyl. Of course, the material is also available in a digital version.

Pokud vím, album vyšlo v tuto chvíli ve 300 kopiích. Naneštěstí pandemická situace nutí nás i label jednat opatrně. Nemá smysl dělat hodně CD, když se lidé soustředí na to, aby neztratili práci. Jakmile zjistíme, jak dobře jde prodej, pomyslíme na další vydání a lisování vinylu. Materiál je samozřejmě k dispozici také v digitální verzi.
Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

The author of all the lyrics on the latest album is me. Already at Watching You Die, I started taking over the role of a texter in the band. Maciej's lyrics, our previous vocalist, oscillated around the gore style, which at some point stopped to suit us. The lyrics on the newest album focus on death and its aspects in different cultures over time. There are also strictly anti-Christian texts. I think that the lyrics for To the Pyre will be the most interesting from the Czech listener's point of view. It tells about burning Jan Hus at the stake. It is written a bit perversely because from the perspective of the people who sent it to the pile, showing their hypocrisy and desire for power.

Autorem všech textů na posledním albu jsem já. Už na Watching You Die jsem začal v kapele přebírat roli textaře. Maciejovy texty, náš předchozí zpěvák, oscilovaly kolem gore stylu, který nás v určitém okamžiku přestal vyhovovat. Texty nejnovějšího alba se zaměřují na smrt a její aspekty v různých kulturách v průběhu času. Existují také přísně protikřesťanské texty. Myslím, že texty pro To the Pyre budou z pohledu českého posluchače nejzajímavější. Vypráví o upálení Jana Husa. Je to psáno trochu zvráceně, protože z pohledu lidí, kteří ho poslali na hranici, ukazuje jejich pokrytectví a touhu po moci.
Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?
Eng.
The first logo was designed by the then girlfriend of our drummer - Konstancja Bartoszewska. Initially we liked it a lot, but but it reminded many people the Entombed logo and they started labeling us as Swedish death metal. The current logo was made for us by the Indian drawer Casus Artem. I told him to take our old logo and load it with steroids. As a result logo is more brutal. I am responsible also for the visual side. I took some of the photos myself during my travels. This is how the artwork for Watching You Die was created. I took the photo in the morgue under the church of St. James in Brno. The author of the cover for Let the Earth Tremble is Dawid Figielek, a man with an amazing sense of this apocalyptic climate. I believe that social media is a very important element today. There used to be letters, but now you have contact with fans through internet portals. It is also a great way to promote your music. The Internet gives us unlimited possibilities in this. The point is, you know how to use them.

První logo navrhla tehdejší přítelkyně našeho bubeníka - Konstancja Bartoszewska. Zpočátku se nám moc líbilo, ale mnoho lidem připomínalo logo Entombed a začali nás označovat jako švédský death metal. Aktuální logo pro nás vytvořil indický umělec Casus Artem. Řekl jsem mu, aby vzal naše staré logo a naložil jej steroidy. Jsem zodpovědný za vizuální stránku. Některé z fotografií jsem pořídil sám během svých cest. Takto byla vytvořena kresba pro Watching You Die. Fotografoval jsem v márnici pod kostelem sv. Jakuba v Brně. Autorem obalu desky Let the Earth Treble je Dawid Figielek, muž s úžasným pocitem tohoto apokalyptického podnebí. Věřím, že sociální média jsou dnes velmi důležitým prvkem. Bývaly dopisy, ale nyní máte kontakt s fanoušky prostřednictvím internetových portálů. Je to také skvělý způsob propagace vaší hudby. Internet nám v tom dává neomezené možnosti. Trik spočívá v schopnosti je používat.
Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you qand takés care about you?

We really wanted our debut album to be released by Godz Ov War. In our opinion, it is the best underground label in Poland and we are very pleased with our cooperation. Greg will promote bands wherever he can. The deal between us is fair and the support that the label side is large. Talks about the release of our material by Godz Ov War began quite a long time ago, because of the first demo. Unfortunately, Greg wasn't interested in us at the time. At the next material we heard that if it was a full album, it would be released. Unfortunately, we were not able to make a full album back then. As they say, three times lucky.

Opravdu jsme chtěli, aby naše debutové album vydalo Godz Ov War. Podle našeho názoru se jedná o nejlepší undergroundovou značku v Polsku a naše spolupráce nás velmi potěšila. Greg bude propagovat kapelu, kdekoli bude moci. Dohoda mezi námi je spravedlivá a podpora, že strany labelu je velká. Rozhovory o vydání našeho materiálu Godz Ov War začaly už dávno, kvůli první ukázce. Greg o nás v té době bohužel neměl zájem. Při dalším materiálu jsme slyšeli, že kdyby se jednalo o celé album, bylo by vydáno. Tehdy se nám bohužel nepodařilo vytvořit celé album. Jak se říká, třikrát štěstí.
Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?
Eng.
I would definitely include Morbid Angel, Immolation, Deicide, Bolt Thrower, Vader or Hypnos among our idols. There are many bands that influenced us and if I had to mention them all it would probably be a good litany. But the ones I mentioned are death metal gods for us. To this you definitely need to add such black metal destroyers as Infernal War and Marduk.

Mezi naše idoly bych určitě zařadil Morbid Angel, Immolation, Deicide, Bolt Thrower, Vader a Hypnos. Existuje mnoho kapel, které nás ovlivnily, a kdybych je měl zmínit všechny, byla by to pravděpodobně dobrá litanie. Ale ty, které jsem zmínil, jsou pro nás death metaloví bohové. K tomu určitě musíte přidat takové black metalové ničitele jak Infernal War a Marduk.
Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?
Eng.
As I said before, we wanted the material to be released by Godz Ov War and we only sent our material to them. If, we couldn't get along, we would probably send the material to other labels, but luckily it didn't happen.

Jak jsem již řekl, chtěli jsme, aby byl materiál vydán Godz Ov War, a my jsme jim pouze poslali náš materiál. Pokud bychom spolu nevycházeli, pravděpodobně bychom materiál poslali jiným labelům, ale naštěstí se to nestalo.
How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?
Eng.
I didn't count how many concerts we played. But there were several dozen of them. Unfortunately, due to our work and a few perturbations in life, we haven't had too many opportunities to play last year. We have had one festival so far, FOAD Fest in Krakow in 2019. We had a fate then, because our drummer had hernia surgery before the festival and we had to look for a replacement, and on the way to the festival the guys had a car bump. Luckily we got there and played a pretty good gig. My best memories are the concert in Warsaw in 2019. There was a nice mill under the stage and people were great too. It was a very good party.

Nepočítal jsem, kolik koncertů jsme odehráli. Ale bylo jich několik desítek. Bohužel kvůli naší práci a několika životním neštěstím jsme v poslední době neměli příliš mnoho příležitostí hrát. Doposud jsme měli jeden festival, FOAD Fest v Krakově v roce 2019. Měli jsme tehdy smůlu, protože náš bubeník měl před festivalem operaci kýly a museli jsme hledat náhradu a cestou na festival kluci měli bouračka v autě. Naštěstí jsme se tam dostali a odehráli docela dobrý koncert. Moje nejlepší vzpomínky jsou z akce ve Varšavě v roce 2019. Pod pódiem byl pěkný kotel a lidé byli také skvělí. Byla to velmi dobrá akce.
What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?
Eng.
We do not treat the band as a company that must achieve specific goals. For now, we are focusing on promoting the full album, which is quite difficult in the current pandemic situation. At this point, we focused on making the next album. We already have an outline of the first songs and lyrics. We would definitely like to go and play some concerts with new material, because these songs are asking to be played live. We would also like to play outside Poland, there were already preliminary talks about concerts in the Czech Republic, but the current pandemic situation has destroyed everything.

Nezacházíme s kapelou jako se společností, která musí dosáhnout konkrétních cílů. Zatím se zaměřujeme na propagaci celého alba, což je v současné pandemické situaci dost obtížné. V tomto okamžiku jsme se zaměřili na vytvoření dalšího alba. Již máme přehled prvních písní a textů. Určitě bychom rádi cestovali a hráli nějaké koncerty s novým materiálem, protože tyto písně si žádají živé hraní. Rádi bychom hráli i mimo Polsko, o koncertech v České republice se již hovořilo, ale současná situace všechno posrala.

Vždy jsem rád a s chutí navštěvoval opuštěné kostely, staré hřbitovy. Fascinuje mě jejich atmosféra, bývají nasáklé smutkem, strachem, chladem a temnotou. Někdy to vypadá, že se svět kolem zbláznil, ale zde je klid. A když pak najdu vchod do podzemních chodeb, usmívám se. Otevírám rezavé dveře. Vstupuji dovnitř. Poslouchám u toho novou desku švédských REVOLTING. Démoni se znovu probudili. Mrazí mě v kostech. Ve svých starých zpuchřelých kostech.
Death metal se dá hrát mnoha způsoby. Já mám nejraději ten starý, prašivý a plesnivý, u kterého pukají lebky, zombie tančí a je potřísněný krví a severem. REVOLTING už asi nikdy nepřijdou s převratnou nahrávkou, která by otočila hudebními dějinami. Není to ani účelem. Hlavní je, že si pořád mohu užít rozdrcené lebky, hororovou atmosféru i smrt, které jsou ze skladeb pořád cítit.
"The Shadow At The World's End" se odehrává v rytmu třeba takových PAGANIZER, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, EDGE OF SANITY, TIAMAT, HYPOCRISY, GRAVE. Tradiční chladné severské melodie se potkávají se zničujícími pasážemi. Osobně z motivů slyším určitou melancholii, takovou zvláštní náladu, která se jako jedovatý had proplétá celým albem. REVOLTING sází na jistotu, nikde nic nepřebývá, ani neschází. Parádní je obal od Juanjo Castellana. Potkávám protáhlé obličeje duchů, ztrácím se v krvavé mlze. Vnímám hudbu hlavně přes emoce a deska se mi líbí. Mohl bych psát o navzájem si hodně podobných riffech (Rogga má tolik kapel, že se musí opakovat, to dá rozum), o velmi podobné produkci, lehké monotónnosti a stereotypu, ale nebudu to dělat. Názor si dnes stejně každý udělá sám. Pro mě je hlavní, že jsem znovu v katakombách, v hororovém filmu. Nasávám temné nálady, procházím se nekonečnými chodbami podzemí. Jsem spokojený, podupávám si nohou a svět je náhle černý. Myslím, že je vše v nejlepším pořádku. Berte a nebo nechte být. Starý, prašivý, severský death metal s hororovou atmosférou!

I have always enjoyed visiting the abandoned churches and old cemeteries. I am fascinated by their atmosphere, they are soaked with sadness, fear, cold and darkness. Sometimes it seems that the world around has gone crazy, but there is peace. And then when I find the entrance to the underground corridors, I smile. I'm opening a rusty door. I'm going inside. I'm listening to a new album of Swedish REVOLTING. The demons woke up again. My bones freeze. My old puffy bones.
Death metal can be played in many ways. I like the old, dusty and moldy one, where skulls sprout, zombies dance and are stained with blood and by the north. REVOLTING will probably never come up with a groundbreaking recording that would turn music history. It's not even the purpose. The main thing is that I can still enjoy the crushed skulls, the horror atmosphere and death, which can still be felt from the songs.

SANITY, TIAMAT, HYPOCRISY, GRAVE. Traditional cool Nordic melodies meet
devastating passages. Personally, I hear a certain melancholy from the motifs,
such a strange mood that intertwines like a venomous snake throughout the
album. REVOLTING bets on certainty nothing is left or missing. The cover by
Juanjo Castellan is great. I meet the elongated faces of ghosts, getting lost
in the bloody mist. I perceive music mainly through emotions and I like the
record. I could write about very similar riffs to each other (Rogga has so many
bands that they have to be repeated, it makes sense), about very similar
production, monotony and stereotype, but I won't do it. Today, everyone can
make their own opinion. The main thing for me is that I'm in the catacombs
again, in a horror movie. I soak up the dark mood, I walk through the endless
corridors of the underground. I'm happy, I'm stamping my feet and the world is
suddenly black. I think everything is fine. Take it or leave it. Old, dusty,
Nordic death metal with a horror atmosphere!

Prázdné ulice, divnej smrad. Ticho a jenom vítr se prohání mezi domy. Dnes je hodně temná noc, jako stvořená pro lov. Instinkty šelmy, pradávné pudy. Postava v kápi, která se pohybuje jenom ve stínu. Byl tu už mnohokrát, ale zatím mu stačily jen představy. Úchylné, zlé sny. Dnes je to jiné, cítí na jazyku měděnou pachuť krve. První oběť bývá vždycky nejsladší. Ostrý nůž, moment překvapení. Našli ji až ráno, s vyděšeným výrazem ve tváři. Kdo bude další na řadě?
Hodně podobnou atmosféru cítím i z novinky legendárních francouzských death grinderů PUTRID OFFAL. Pamětníci si zajisté rádi vzpomenou na jejich působení na scéně v devadesátých letech i jejich návrat v roce 2015 (odkaz na recenzi alba "Mature Necropsy" je dole pod článkem). Letos jsou zde znovu, aby nám nahnali strach v opuštěných ulicích. Silní, nekompromisní, divocí a nespoutaní. Hraje se zde death grind vysoké jakosti. To je bez debat.
"Sicknesses Obsessions" je deskou, která pochází ze stejných piteven jako stará alba CARCASS, NAPALM DEATH, REPULSION, TERRORIZZER, IMPETIGO, AGATHOCLES. Je propracovanou, zběsilou jízdou, na jejímž konci vás čeká jenom utrpení. Masakrující zvuk, chlad a temnota. Běžíte nočním městem a nikdo vám nepomůže. Zahnaní jako krysa do kouta budete podrobeni lavině ostrých riffů, špíny a tlaku. Mix death metalu, grindu, punku, hard core. To vše smíchané v nechutném koktejlu. Podávejte podchlazené. Oprátka je připravena. Stačí jen vložit hlavu. Zvuk je surový a syrový. Snesl bych možná ještě větší prašivinu, ale aspoň je vše čitelné a zřetelné. Nápadů mají PUTRID OFFAL dostatek, umí být zajímaví a baví mě je poslouchat. Jsou jako perfektně seřízený stroj na zabíjení. Při poslechu si připadám jako při veřejné pitvě. Rozřezaným tělem na stole je šelma, sériový vrah, kus zcela zbytečného a tisíckrát prokletého masa. Nálada je šedivá a deska opět vynikající. Francouzi rozhodně netrpí nadprodukcí, ale když už něco vydají, stojí to opravdu za to. Absolutní, chladný a temný masakr death grindovou pilou!

I feel a very similar atmosphere from the new record of the legendary French death grinders PUTRID OFFAL. Old metal fans will certainly remember their work on the scene in the 1990s and their return in 2015 (the link to the review of the album "Mature Necropsy" is below this review). They are here again this year to frighten us in the deserted streets. Strong, uncompromising, wild and unfettered. A high-quality death grind is played here. That is without any doubt.
"Sicknesses Obsessions" is a record that comes from the same autopsy rooms as the old albums of CARCASS, NAPALM DEATH, REPULSION, TERRORIZZER, IMPETIGO, AGATHOCLES. It is a sophisticated, frantic ride, at the end of which only suffering awaits you. Massacre sound, cold and darkness. You run through the night city and no one will help you. Driven like a rat into a corner, you will be subjected to an avalanche of sharp riffs, dirt and pressure. A mix of death metal, grind, punk, hardcore. All mixed in a disgusting cocktail. Serve chilled. The noose is ready. Just insert your head. The sound is raw and bestial. I might tolerate even more dust, but at least everything is legible and clear. PUTRID OFFAL has plenty of ideas, they can be interesting, and I enjoy listening to them. They are like a perfectly tuned killing machine. During the listening, I feel like in a public autopsy. The cut-off body on the table is a beast - a serial killer, a piece of completely useless and a thousand times cursed meat. The mood is grey, and the record is excellent again. The French band certainly does not suffer from overproduction, but when they release something, it is really worth it. The absolute, cold and dark massacre of a death grind saw!

Ave XPUS! Nikde jsem s vámi nenašel žádný rozhovor v češtině. Poprosím tě tedy nejdřív, abys čtenářům, kteří vás ještě neznají, představil kapelu. Můžeš klidně začít úplně od začátku a provést nás celou historií XPUS.
Kapelu XPUS som založil v januári 2015 celkom sám, koncom marca som nahral prvé demo ako „jednočlenná kapela“ a vďaka nemu som o mesiac neskôr podpísal zmluvu na vydanie debutového albumu s ukrajinským vydavateľstvom Metal Scrap Records. Samozrejme, potreboval som zmeniť celkovú typológiu kapely z jednočlennej na full zostavu, tak som oslovil svojho starého priateľa a bývalého člena vo všetkých svojich starých hudobných projektoch, ktorý sa volá Mornak (gitary) a ešte jedného muzikanta s menom L (bubeník). V júni toho roku sme začali nahrávať debutové album s názvom „Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth“, ktoré nakoniec vyšlo v novembri. V roku 2016 sme s novým bubeníkom Ulvirøsom odohrali veľa koncertov v Taliansku i v zahraničí. Objavili sme sa na dvoch kompiláciách, prvú s názvom „Blasphemy by your name vol.3“ vydali Metal Music Austria a „Witchery Flames Of Underground Lust" bola vydaná prostredníctvom vydavateľstva Metal Scrap Records. V októbri sme spolu s kapelami Enthroned, Bolzer, Possession, Infernal War a mnohými ďalšími vystúpili na festivale Rites of the black mass v Bukurešti. V septembri roku 2017 sme opäť sadli do štúdia aby sme nahrali druhý album s názvom „In Umbra Mortis Sedent“. Dva mesiace potom sme podpísali zmluvu s vydavateľstvom Transcending Obscurity Records. V máji 2018 sme sa vybrali na turné po východnej Európe. Po dvoch rokoch, v apríli 2020, konečne vyšiel náš spomínaný album. Bohužiaľ, kvôli pandémií spojenej s Covid 19, všetky naše plány na podporu novej dosky šli do prdele.... Takže teraz, čakajúc na lepšie časy, sme zatvorení v našej skúšobni, aby sme dokončili budúcu, tretiu kapitolu čo sa týka albumov.
8. 5. 2020 vám vyšlo u Transcending Obscurity Records vaše nové album "In Umbra Mortis Sedent". Jak už sám název napovídá, jedná se opět o smršť poctivého blacku a starého death metalu. Když jste šli ze studia, jaké jste měli pocity? Představ prosím fanouškům trošku nové album.
No pravdupovediac, keď sme dokončili nahrávanie nového albumu, cítili sme sa ... „zvláštne“, pretože po mesiacoch príprav na prácu v štúdiu, celkové nahrávanie bolo hotové iba za 8 hodín, 4 hodiny venované hudobnej časti a ďalšie 4 hodiny textom, takže Vám je asi jasné, že takýto postup je trochu nezvyčajný. Cítili sme sa dobre, ale na druhej strane sme sa pýtali sami seba „toto je všetko?“ nemali sme možnosť vyskúšať si celý proces tvorby albumu, všetko bolo príliš rýchle. „Umbra Mortis Sedent“ je najhlbší, temný a rúhavý originálny extrémny metalový album, bez inovácií, čistých vokálov, bez super nahrávacích vymožeností a bez sterilného a umelého zvuku. Tento album je našou osobnou poctou hudbe, ktorú milujeme a s ktorou sme vyrastali.
Na novince mě zaujal opravdu hodně syrový a „prašivý“ zvuk. Kde jste desku nahrávali, mixovali, kdo je podepsán pod produkcí?
To veľmi radi počujeme, strávili sme veľa hodín hľadaním osobitého zvuku. Album sme nahrávali na veľmi špecifickom mieste, bol to priestor podobný niečomu medzi zámkom a statkom. Túto budovu často využívajú niektoré profesionálne divadelné skupiny na svoje skúšky. S cieľom povýšiť samotnú nahrávku a vložiť do nej surový zvuk, ktorý máme aj na pódiu, nechceli sme nahrávať v skutočnom profesionálnom štúdiu. Mužom v pozadí, ktorý je zodpovedný za nahrávanie a mixovanie je Manuel Marani z „Mara's Cave“ tu v Taliansku, za masteringom stojí namiesto neho Dan Lowndes z „Resonance Sound Studio“ v Anglicku.
Zaujal mě i obal desky. Jestli to dobře chápu, tak je na něm výjev z nějaké staré okultní knihy. Cover je pekelný, temný a tajemný jako vaše nová deska. Co má tento námět vyjadřovat? A kdo jej namaloval?
Nie, nejde o obálku starej knihy. Keď Kunal (šéf Transcending Obscurity) počul celý album, napísal niečo v tomto zmysle: „Vaša hudba mi pripomína staré podzemné katakomby, smrť, temnotu a bezútešnosť, čo si myslíš o tomto koncepte?“. Samozrejme, že to bol super nápad! Kresbu vytvoril Misanthropic-Art, naozaj skvelá práca, milujem ju.
Jako kapela se ve svých textech zaobíráte satanismem, okultismem, smrtí, násilím. O čem jsou na nové nahrávce? Jaké je hlavní téma a myšlenka "In Umbra Mortis Sedent"?
Na albume nájdete vlastne iba 2 texty, prvý je rozdelený do prvých dvoch skladieb a hovorí o človeku, ktorý je s cieľom zbaviť sa mučiacich satanských hlasov v jeho hlave odhodlaný previesť satanský rituál a zabiť mladú pannu. Avšak na konci všetkého si uvedomí a pochopí, že nikdy neexistovali žiadne hlasy, všetko to bolo len v jeho hlave, je proste šialený, má radosť z plánovania únosov, mučenia, zabitia dievčaťa a má takisto potešenie zo znásilnenia jej mŕtveho zmrzačeného telo. V tej chvíli pochopil, že nemá šancu uniknúť pred týmto šialenstvom, jediným únikom môže byť samovražda. Ďalšia skladba „The Gates of Doom“ je starou a znovu obnovenou vecou z našej (mojej a Mornakovej) starej black metalovej kapely UNHOLY LAND, takže táto pieseň je akoby oddeľujúcim článkom medzi dvoma lyrickými konceptami na albume. Druhý text je rozdelený a je prerozprávaný vo všetkých ostatným skladbách. Hovorí o malom dieťati znásilnenom kňazom, v tomto prípade sa snažím rozprávať príbeh z iného uhla pohľadu. Z pohľadu kňaza, ktorý sa snaží odolávať, ale impulzy sú také silné a nekontrolovateľné, potešenie zo spojenia jeho mäsa s mäsom dieťaťa, posadnutosť jeho telom, plač v jeho izbe po pohlavnom styku, to všetko nenávidí, ale je to zasraný kretén a vie, že čoskoro sa stane jednou z jeho obetí ďalšie dieťa. Z pohľadu dieťaťa, ktoré je osamotené vo svojej veľkej izbe s kňazom, ktorý je príliš silný, nevie odtiaľ uniknúť, jeho ruky sú všade po jeho tele, jeho bozky a sliny, páchnuci dych v krku, znásilnenie a celý život zničený budúcimi nepretržitými nočnými morami.
Hrajete totálně nihilistický death black metal. Jedná se přesně o ten druh inferna, který posluchačům pořádně pocuchá nervy i sluchovody. Jak jste se k tomuto stylu dostali? Prošli jste si jako muzikanti i jinými styly hudby? Hráli jste v jiných kapelách? Kdo vás vlastně ovlivnil v začátcích?
Keď som mal 14 rokov, našiel som kazetu s nápisom „Slayer - Hell Awaits“: to bol pre mňa začiatok, dovtedy som už síce počúval metalovú hudbu ako Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, Manowar Venom atď., ale ten album všetko zmenil. Asi o rok neskôr som sa stretol s chalanmi staršími ako ja a tí mi priniesli do života kapely ako Grave, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Autopsy atď. Nedá sa hovoriť o žiadnom inom druhu hudby v mojom živote. Extrémnu hudbu hrám od roku 1995, pričom kapely BATHIM (Black Metal), UNHOLY LAND (Black Metal), SOULPHUREUS (Death Metal) sú už všetky mŕtve. Teraz hrám iba v XPUS. Zásadný vplyv na mňa/nás mali len veľké staré kapely minulosti.
Album "In Umbra Mortis Sedent" vyšlo na CD, vinylu i kazetě u Transcending Obscurity Records. Label má v undergroundu velmi dobré jméno a odvádí skvělou práci, o kapelách z jejich je opravdu hodně slyšet. Jak jste s nimi spokojeni vy, jako kapela?
Áno, Kunal je naozajstným metalovým fanúšikom a do svojej práce vkladá všetko svoje nadšenie a vášeň. Náš album bol doposiaľ vydaný na dvoch formátoch, digipack verzia a limitovaná edícia box setu. Obe vydania sú v skvelom prevedení, ktoré dokonca svieti v tme. Veľmi oceňujem Kunalovu kreativitu čo sa týka týchto inovatívnych nápadov. Sme s jeho prácou naozaj spokojní.
Jak jsou na tom vlastně XPUS s koncerty? Co jsem si dohledal na internetu, tak hrajete převážně v undergroundových klubech. Chodí v Itálii lidé na starý death/black metal? Nechystáte k podpoře nového alba koncertní šňůru? Pokud ano, zavítáte i k nám do České republiky?
Milujeme hrať naživo na pódiu, sme jednoznačne živá kapela, nezáleží na tom, či je to veľký priestor alebo undergroundový klub, pre nás je dôležitá iba hrať. Bohužiaľ, toto obdobie je skutočne zvláštne a premrhané, Covid 19 všetko zničil, takže v súčasnosti nemáme na najbližšie obdobie žiadny plán, musíme čakať a dúfať. Nezostáva nám nič iné, len sa neustále pripravovať na potenciálne budúce koncerty a takisto pokračujeme v práci na novom albume. Samozrejme, ak bude možnosť hrať vo vašej krajine, určite prídeme chlape!
V současné době si většina lidí nová alba stahuje z internetu a používá jen jeho digitální podobu. Jak vidíš tuhle problematiku ty? Zajímal by mě tvůj pohled jako muzikanta.
Internet nám prináša niekoľko skvelých možností, ale na druhej strane zničil už mnoho vecí. Všetko toto barbarské nelegálne sťahovanie zrazilo hudobný biznis na kolená, takže vydavateľstvá už toľko neinvestujú do nových kapiel. Pre mnohých ľudí naokolo sa tak zatvorili ďalšie dvere po celom svete. Niektoré vydavateľstvá pýtajú od kapiel veľa peňazí už len na vydanie albumu, to je nehanebné, hrať extrémnu muziku pre nás znamená niečo ako danosť, poslanie. Ako kapela nemôžete očakávať, že zarobíte hraním takéhoto štýlu muziky nejaké prachy, ale na druhej strane predsa nepredám obličku, aby som mohol svoju muziku vydať, do frasa! Nakoniec, dnes je príliš jednoduché získať nejakú novú nahrávku, takže sa stráca to čaro, ktoré kedysi odrážalo príchod nového albumu, to čakania, viera v predajcu, že vás neokradne, ten dotyk fyzickej kópie, ako ju otvoríte, pozriete si texty, fotografie, ako bežíte domov, aby ste si ju pustili... asi mi rozumieš, že? To všetko sa dnes stráca. Dnešok je celý sterilný/umelý.
Jsou nějaké desky, které tě v poslední době oslovily?
Nie, ale iba preto, že v poslednom období som veľmi zaneprázdnený prácou a problémami, bohužiaľ nie je čas na hľadanie novej hudby.
Znáš, posloucháš nějaké kapely z České republiky?
Áno, samozrejme, ak by som mal spomenúť niektoré z nich: KRABATHOR, PATHOLOGIST, DISFIGURED CORPSE, MANIAC BUTCHER, ROOT.
Co chystají XPUS v nejbližších měsících?
Ako som už povedal predtým, v týchto zvláštnych časoch je ťažké niečo plánovať a organizovať, musíme len čakať…

Ave XPUS! I haven’t found any interview in the Czech language with you, yet. So please, first introduce the band to our readers who don’t know you. You could start from the early beginnings and describe the whole XPUS history.
XPUS band was founded by me in January 2015, at the end of March I recorded the first demo like a "One-Man Band" and thanks to that, one month later, I signed a contract with Ukraine Label "Metal Scrap Records" for the release of debut album, of course I needed to switch the band typology from "One-Man Band" to "Full band" so I called my old friend and ex member in my every old music projects "Mornak" (guitars) and "L" (Drums). In June we started the recording for the debut album called : “Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth” which was published in November. In the 2016 with a new Drummer called “Ulvirøs” we played many gigs in Italy and abroad, we appeared in two compilation, the first one named “Blasphemy by thy name vol.3” released by “Metal Music Austria” and in “Witchery Flames Of Underground Lust" released by “Metal Scrap Records”. In October we partecipated to the Festival "Rites of the black mass" in Bucharest with Enthroned, Bolzer ,Possession, Infernal IWar and many others bands. In September 2017 we entered Studio for the second chapter called: "In Umbra Mortis Sedent" and after 2 months we signed a deal with Transcending Obscurity Label. In May 2018 we went in Tour in the east of Europe. After two years, in April 2020 our album was finally released. Unfortunately, due to Covid 19, all of our plans for supporting the album release went to fuck...... So now, waiting for better times, we are closed in our rehersal room to complete the future third chapter.
On 8. 5. 2020 Transcending Obscurity Records released your new album "In Umbra Mortis Sedent". As the name suggests, it is again a whirlwind of honest black and old death metal. When did you go out of studio, how did you feel? Introduce a little bit your new album to your fans.
Well, when we finished the recording of the new album, we felt... "strange" because after months of preparing for the work in the studio, we finished all in only 8 hours, 4 hours for the music part and another 4 hours for the lirycs, so you can understand that this thing is unusual, we felt good but also "is it all over?" we didn't have the opportunity to taste the entire process of album creation, all was too fast. "Umbra Mortis Sedent" is a deepest obscure and blasphemous genuine extreme metal album, no innovations, no clean voices, no super recording with blasting and plastic sound. This album is our personal tribute to the music we love, and we grew up with.
I really enjoyed a very raw and "mangy" sound on the new album. Where did you record and mix the album and who is signed under the production?
I'm happy to hear this, we spent many hours searching for a personal sound. We recorded the album in a very particular place, a mix between castle and farmhouse, this building is always used by some professional Theater companies for their rehearsals. In order to exalt and bring on the recording the raw sound that we have on stage we didn't want a real professional studio. The man behind the recording and mixing is Manuel Marani of "Mara's Cave" here in italy, for the mastering instead Dan Lowndes of "Resonance Sound Studio" in England.
I am also interested about the cover of the album. If I understand it well, so it is a scene from an old occult book. Cover is hell, dark and mysterious like your new album. What does this idea mean? And who painted it?
No it isn't a cover of old book, when Kunal (Boss of Transcending Obscurity) listened the whole album wrote to me and said " your music remember me old underground catacombs, Death darkness and desolation, what do you think about this concept? Of course was a cool idea! The artwork was created by Misanthropic-Art, really great work, i love it.
As a band, you are dealing with satanism, occultism, death, violence. What are the lyrics about on the new recording? What is the main theme and idea of "In Umbra Mortis Sedent"?
In the album you can find only 2 lyrics, the first one is splitted in the first two songs, it talks about a man that in order to get rid from the satanic voices that torment him, is forced to make a satanic ritual and kill a young virgin girl, but at the end he understands that there aren‘t any voices, all is in his head, he is just crazy, he takes pleasure to plan in kidnapping, torturing, killing the girl and taking pleasure in rape her dead mutilated body. He understands that there is no chance to escape from his madness, the only escape is suicide. The song: “The Gates of Doom“ is a rivisited cover of an our (mine and Mornak) old Black Metal band called Unholy Land so this song is apart. The second lyric is splitted from all the rest of the songs and talks about a little child raped by a priest, in this case I try to tell the story from a different point of view, the priest who tries to resist but the impulses is so strong and uncontrollable, the pleasure of his flesh blending with child's flesh, the possession upon his body, the crying alone in his hall after the coitus, he hate all of this but he is a fucking asshole and he knows that soon another child will become one of his victims. The point of view of the child, alone in this great room with the priest, he is too strong, no escape, his hands all around the body, his kisses and his drool, his fetid breath in the throat, the rape and the entire life ruined with future continuous nightmares.
You play totally nihilistic death/ black metal. This is exactly the kind of inferno that listeners really mess up their nerve and auditory canal. How did you get to this style? Did you pass as musicians other styles of music? Did you play in other bands? Who actually influenced you at the beginning?
When I was 14 years old I found a cassette with the inscription "Slayer - Hell Awaits": this was the beginning for me, I was already listening metal music like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, Manowar Venom etc. but that album changed everything. After 1 year I met some guys older than me that brought in my life bands like: Grave, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Autopsy etc etc. No other kind of music in my life. I play extreme music since 1995, with Bathim (Black Metal), Unholy Land (Black Metal), Soulphureus (Death Metal) all dead Bands, now I play only in Xpus. Only the great olden bands of the past influence me/us.
The new album on CD, vinyl and cassette was released by Transcending Obscurity Records. The label has a very good name in the underground and it does a great job because people often hear about bands this label works with. Were you, as a band, satisfied with their work?
Yes. Kunal, Boss of T.O. is a real metalhead and he puts all his passion into his work, our album is released for now only in 2 different format, the digipak version and the limited box edition, both are very cool productions with glow in the dark effect, I love the creativity of T.O. and these innovative ideas, we are very satisfied, yes.
How about XPUS and concerts? I looked online and I found out that you mostly play in underground clubs. Do people often go to old death black metal concerts in Italy? Do you want to support your album with a tour? If yes, do you want to play in the Czech Republic?
We love play on stage, we are a live band, it doesn’t matter if it’s a big or underground club, for us the only important thing is play. Unfortunately, this is a real strange and waste period, the Covid 19 ruined all, so now, we don’t have any plan for the near future, we have to wait and hope. For now, we prepare us for the future gigs and continue the work on the new album and if will be the possibility to play in your country, we'll come for sure man!
Nowadays, many people download music online and they only use its digital form. How do you feel about this as a musician?
Internet bring us some great possibilities but also it ruined many others. all this savage illegal download has brought the music business to its knees so now, the Labels don't invest anymore in the new bands and more doors are closed for many guys around the world, some of them (Labels) ask a lot of money to the Bands for the releases, this is shameful, play extreme Metal is a vocation, as a band you can't expect to make money with this kind of music but not even sell a kidney for everything, damn! Lastly, today is too simple to get a new album, so you lost the taste of what was all around, the waiting, the trusted shop, touch the physical copy, opening it, see the lirics, the photos, the run to home or in your car to listen to it, you understand me? All this is lost today. Today is all aseptic.
Are there any albums which have caught your attention recently?
No, but only because in the last period I'm very busy with my work and some problems, unfortunately no time for search new music.
Do you know and listen any Czech bands?
Yes of course, some of them? Krabathor, Pathologist, Disfigured Corpse, Maniac Butcher, Root.
What are XPUS ´s plans for the next few months?
As I said, in this strange period is hard to plan and organize things, we wait...
