Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Resin Tomb was founded in 2019, we started as a 3 piece, became a 4 piece by the time we wrote the "Unconsecrated // Ascendancy” 2-Track, and have now been a 5 piece since the writing of ‘Cerebral Purgatory’. We play DIssonant-Death Metal, that's heavily influenced by Blackened Grind.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

We are very fortunate to have Brendan Auld (Pip) from Black Blood Audio as our guitarist/songwriter/producer. At the time of writing Cerebral Purgatory, Pip was still operation Black Blood Audio from the studio he built under his house. Pips a mad man, he would stay up writing demos until all hours of the night, sending us through mixes at 3am in the morning. He wrote all the demos in around 2 weeks, and then as a unit we fine tuned them for awhile, then recorded. Everything was recorded in house by Pip at Black Blood Audio (except for drum tracking, it was still recorded by Brendan, but at Qsound Audio Services at the Gold Coast). He then took care of all the mixing, and we sent it off to be mastered by Arthur Rizk.


How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

Vinyl: 200 Copies (2 Variants)

CD: 300 Copies

Tape: 100 Copies

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

I (Budge - Vocalist) wrote all the lyrics for this album. Every song is a short story about a horrible death or equally shit existence. The futility of existence can be brutal. I've always found real life much more terrifying than an exaggerated Hollywood concept. Life is disposable and that is absolutely terrifying.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The logo was created by a dude called Necro Frost. He's an Indonesian artist, check him out on Instagram. As for the Bandcamp, that's all taken care of by our Bassist - Mitch Long, he works in design so it's very handy having him on board.


Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takes care about you?

Transcending Obscurity hit up Pip about releasing a Snorlax record via them, and he already had a label for that project, so he sent Kunal the demos for the Cerebral Purgatory and he was keen immediately, so we actually didn't shop it around, we already really liked Transcending as a label so when he was on board we ran with it.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

It varies from each member, but some notable band favourites are; Artificial Brain, Gorguts, Ulcerate, Hexis, Disentomb, Wiegedood, Dragged Into Sunlight, Wake, Primitive Man, Whorls, Teeth, Faceless Burial and Dead Congregation.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

No, only Transcending Obscurity.


How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

It’s hard to say, if I had to guess I'd say maybe like 30ish gigs as Resin Tomb. Festivals are nice for an interstate gig as they tend to have a larger audience to try and convert, but we also love a good intimate club show in your hometown.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

We would love to do some touring in the near future. It's difficult to predict, we are all between 33/34, so we are at the stage in our lives where we are buying houses, having kids and getting married. Resin Tomb is a huge passion for us all, but the stars have to align pretty nicely for us all to have time to do anything big together.

Říká se, že svědomí vás vždycky nakonec dostihne. Nemyslím si to. Čím jsem starší, tím víc vidím kolem sebe lidí, kteří jej vůbec nemají. Možná jsem citlivější na projevy zla, ale pokaždé, když jdu kolem kostela, ztrácím víru v náš druh. Někteří jsou jen prázdné nádoby bez názoru, jsou ovcemi pochodujícími na porážku. Můžeš udělat jakýkoliv hnusný čin, ale když odříkáš několik Otčenášů, dostaneš odpuštění. Jak jednoduché. Oběti mezitím umírají utrápení neskutečnou bolestí. Raději se vracím k přírodě a hudbě, která mě dokáže oslovit, zaujmout. SVITOGOR jsem dosud neznal. Jenže stačilo několik prvních poslechů a rozhodl jsem se, že by bylo dobré se s vámi podělit o pár svých dojmů.

A to i přesto, že epický black metal nebývá zrovna častým hostem v mém přehrávači. Přesvědčila mě naléhavost, způsob, jakým Dalibor Franjkić (Insanus) přistupuje k hudbě jako takové. Kapela je projektem jednoho muže, který je podepsán pod vším. Insanus je zkušený muzikant, který má za sebou velké množství skvělé práce (BLACK CULT, CZAAR, HIBERNUM, ZVIJER). Nezbývalo mi nic jiného, než si nasadit sluchátka a opustit civilizaci. Uprostřed zmrzlých lesů vynikla debutová deska "The Howling Void" nejvíce. 


Sledoval jsem stromy, jak se pomalu ukládají ke spánku. Měl jsem pocit, že šeptají. Pod nohama mi křupal čerstvý sníh a cesta mě zavedla na staré pohřebiště. Bývaly tu kdysi domy, které za jedné z válek, které přešly přes naše území, byly srovnány se zemí. Do mozku se mi otiskl nářek. Nevím proč, možná ve mě hudba probudila jinou dimenzi. Je to neklidné, avantgardní album, neortodoxní. Má dobrý zvuk i obal. Ale hlavně je napsáno originálním způsobem. Je jako bolest trpících, je jako pomalá smrt, u které se postupně rozpadnete v prach. V některých momentech je album až "nepříjemné", nebál bych se napsat až divné. Zrovna tyto pasáže si ale nejvíc pamatuji. Nebude to asi hudba pro každého, je nutný soustředěný poslech, spousta času a nejlépe i absolutní tma, ale když vydržíte prvotní setkání, budete odměněni vskutku neotřelým zážitkem. Napříč celým albem se potom vznáší určitý druh melancholie a neklidu. Žijeme v divném, pokřiveném světě a SVITOGOR vám nastaví zrcadlo. Alespoň tak jsem nahrávku vnímal já. Určitě znáte pohřební zpěvy starých národů. Připadá mi, že na ně v určitém směru Insanus navazuje. Pochází z Chorvatska, které je známé v hudbě svojí melodičností. Troufám si tvrdit, že se promítla i do jeho tvorby. Alespoň v případě "The Howling Void" to tak vnímám. Pokud vás někdy štve čilý ruch v ulicích, působí na vás stres, mohu vám tuhle desku jenom doporučit. Zklidní a rozdrásá vás zároveň, přivede na jiné myšlenky. Ohlodá vaše svědomí až na kost. Misantropický, antihumánní, epický black metal po okraj narvaný neklidem! Strhněte všechny modly a nechte se pohltit pradávnou temnotou!

They say your conscience always catches up with you eventually. I don't think so. The older I get, the more I see people around me who don't have one. Maybe I'm more sensitive to evil, but every time I walk past a church, I lose faith in our species. Some are just empty vessels with no opinion, sheep marching to the slaughter. You can do any ugly act, but if you say a few Our Fathers, you will be forgiven. How simple. Meanwhile, the victims are dying in excruciating pain. I prefer to return to nature and music, which can reach me, captivate me. I've never known SVITOGOR before. But after a few first listens, I decided it would be a good idea to share some of my impressions.

And this despite the fact that epic black metal is not a frequent guest in my player. What convinced me was the urgency, the way Dalibor Franjkić (Insanus) approaches music as such. The band is a one-man project that is signed under everything. Insanus is an experienced musician who has done a lot of great work (BLACK CULT, CZAAR, HIBERNUM, ZVIJER). I had no choice but to put on my headphones and leave civilization. Amidst the frozen forests, the debut album "The Howling Void" stood out the most.


I watched the trees as they slowly went to sleep. I felt like they were whispering. Fresh snow crunched under my feet and the path led me to an old burial ground. There used to be houses here that had been razed during one of the wars that had crossed our territory. A wail imprinted itself on my brain. I don't know why, maybe the music awakened another dimension in me. It's a restless, avant-garde album, unorthodox. It has a good sound and cover. But above all, it's written in an original way. It's like the pain of the suffering, it's like a slow death where you gradually crumble into dust. In some moments the album is even "unpleasant", I wouldn't be afraid to write weird. But these are the passages I remember the most. It's probably not going to be music for everyone, it requires concentrated listening, a lot of time and preferably absolute darkness, but if you can endure the initial encounter you will be rewarded with a truly novel experience. A kind of melancholy and restlessness hovers throughout the album. We live in a strange, distorted world and SVITOGOR holds up a mirror to you. At least that's how I perceived the record. I'm sure you're familiar with the funeral chants of ancient peoples. It seems to me that Insanus follows them in some ways. He comes from Croatia, which is known in music for its melodicism. I dare say that it is also reflected in his work. At least in the case of "The Howling Void" I feel that way. If you are ever annoyed by the hustle and bustle of the streets, the stress, I can only recommend this album to you. It will calm you down and tear you up at the same time, it will make you think different thoughts. It'll bite your conscience to the bone. Misanthropic, anti-human, epic black metal filled to the brim with unease! Tear down all your idols and let the ancient darkness consume you!

Pradávná fascinace smrtí. Hluboko ukrytá temnota, která je v každém z nás. Záleží jen na příležitosti a pudu sebezáchovy. Vozí nám sem každý den několik mrtvých. Každý se tváří úplně jinak. Někdo odešel vyděšený a s neskutečnou bolestí na tváři. Jiný jakoby se usmíval a v klidu usnul. Říká se, že jaký si žil život, tak také zemřeš. Jsou ale výjimky. Zlí a prokletí lidé, monstra, která dokáží škodit i dlouho po smrti. Vracejí se jako nemrtví, jako temné přízraky. I o těch je nové EP PUTERAEON. 

Včera mi zavolali, že našli v lesích opuštěný dům. V něm děsivý sklep, plný mrtvol. Vstoupil jsem dovnitř a ponořil se do tmy, do bolesti. Atmosféra byla velmi podobná,  jako na "Quindecennial Horror". Ještě ho nechytili, prý zmizel ve tmě. Bestie, krvelačná šelma v lidské podobě. Poslouchám dál a stávám se obětí. Tahle nahrávka řeže tou správnou stranou nože. 

Téhle smečce se věnuji od jejich počátků (recenze a rozhovory jsou odkazovány dole pod článkem). Protože je opravdová, true a ortodoxní. Stále nese vlajku starého, prašivého death metalu hrdě vztyčenou. Letos pánové pokračují ve své morbidní práci. Líbí se mi, že se zaobírají typicky stylovými tématy. Zombie, Cthulhu mýty, horory. Vše zamíchané v poctivém a jedovatém koktejlu. Základem je samozřejmě švédská klasika (DISMEMBER, NIHILIST, ENTRAILS, GRAVE, ENTOMBED), přidávány jsou potom zahnívající kusy nahrubo nasekaného masa a tmy. Pánové chřestí pytlem plným kostí a dělají to zkušeně a s nadšením. O zvuk se postaral Dan Swanö, což je jako vždy záruka kvality. Fanoušek pohřbů do země dostane přesně to, co potřebuje. Temnotu, chlad, ozvěny z těch nejhlubších katakomb. Společná setkání s PUTERAEON mi připomínají pradávné rituály smrti, pořádané kdysi v devadesátých letech minulého století na mnohých severských hřbitovech. Bylo mi opět velkou ctí potkat ty nejkrásnější zombie, potřást si rukou s přízraky i s nemrtvými. Démoni moc dobře vědí, o čem píšu. Dejte mi někdo kladivo, dneska bude dlouhá noc. Dům v lesích je plný mrtvol a pochybuji, že tohle způsobil člověk. Stejně jako hudba, má tohle místo neskutečně mrtvolnou atmosféru. Nezbývá mi opět nic jiného, než  označit nové EP vysokou známkou kvality. Pradávná fascinace smrtí. Hluboko ukrytá temnota, která je v každém z nás. Záleží jen na příležitosti a pudu sebezáchovy. Ryzí old school death metal! Vysoce kvalitní, ušlechtilá švédská ocel!

An ancient fascination with death. The deep hidden darkness that is in all of us. It's just a matter of opportunity and self-preservation. They bring us a few dead every day. Each with a completely different face. Someone left terrified and with incredible pain on their face. Another seems to smile and sleep peacefully. They say that as you lived your life, so shall you die. But there are exceptions. Evil and cursed people, monsters who can do harm long after death. They come back as the undead, as dark phantoms. The new PUTERAEON EP is about them too. 

Yesterday I got a call that they found an abandoned house in the woods. A creepy basement full of dead bodies. I went inside and plunged into darkness, into pain. The atmosphere was very similar to "Quindecennial Horror". They haven't caught him yet, they say he disappeared in the dark. A beast, a bloodthirsty beast in human form. I keep listening and I become a victim. This record cuts with the right side of the knife.

I've been following this pack since their early days (reviews and interviews are linked below the article). Because it is real, true and orthodox. They still carry the flag of old, grimy death metal proudly flying. This year the gentlemen continue their morbid work. I like the fact that they deal with typical stylistic themes. Zombies, Cthulhu myths, horror. All mixed up in an honest and poisonous cocktail. The base is of course the Swedish classics (DISMEMBER, NIHILIST, ENTRAILS, GRAVE, ENTOMBED), then rotting chunks of roughly chopped meat and darkness are added. The gentlemen rattle a bag full of bones and do it with experience and enthusiasm. Dan Swanö has taken care of the sound, which as always is a guarantee of quality. A fan of in-ground funerals gets exactly what they need. Darkness, cold, echoes from the deepest catacombs. The common encounters with PUTERAEON remind me of the ancient death rituals once held in many Nordic cemeteries in the 1990s. It was again a great honour to meet the most beautiful zombies, to shake hands with the ghosts and the undead. The demons know very well what I write about. Somebody get me a hammer, it's gonna be a long night. The house in the woods is full of corpses, and I doubt this is man-made. Like the music, this place has an incredibly deadpan atmosphere. Again, I have no choice but to give the new EP a high mark for quality. An ancient fascination with death. The deep hidden darkness that is in all of us. It's just a matter of opportunity and the instinct for self-preservation. Pure old school death metal! High-quality, noble Swedish steel!

Interview - DROWNED - An ancient, dark death metal ritual soaked in pus and rot!

Ave DROWNED! Greetings to the catacombs of Berlin. It's been nine years since I last saw you live. It was in a small club in Prague. I remember RAVENCULT played with you. I bought your first album there, which came out in 2014. For playing since 1992, you definitely don't suffer from overproduction. The new album "Procul His" is only your second full-length. So the first question is. Why is that?

Aha, nice! Very much appreciated, thanks for coming out! That was one of the not-so-crowded shows on the tour as far as I rememeber ... To answer your question, for about three years following the release of “Idola Specus“ we played lots of shows and rehearsed rarely due to colliding schedules, day jobs etc., and when rehearsing, we basically had to prepare for the next show.

The fact is that the previous album and this one literally blew me away. How did you take a long time to compose the new album "Procul His", how was the material created and where did you want to go after these long ten years?

Thanks! After the first album, and in addition to the fact that we couldn’t rehearse very often for a certain period, I also had a bit of an issue with songwriting; for a while I just wasn’t satisfied with what I was coming up with, so the whole process just dragged out. From the album, “Blue Moth Vault“ and “Man In Devil In Man“ are from 2017/2018, while most of the other tracks were finished between 2020 and early 2023. That being said, many riffs are quite old, but sometimes it took years until they had found their place. As for direction, I basically only wanted the new songs to gain a bit complexity, speed and tempo changes.


Sound is always very important in death metal. You have it massive, dark and cold. Clear and animalistic at the same time, if you know what I mean. Where did you record the album? Who is responsible for the mixing and mastering? How was the recording process?

Just like previous album, it was recorded by our drummer Tobias at our rehearsal place. He is a professional sound engineer, and the place is stuffed with recording equipment. For drums and guitar we got a helping hand from Michael Zech (also an audio engineer and guitar player in Ruins of Beverast, Secrets of the Moon ...). The mixing was done by Tobias, and the mastering by Patrick W. Engel (Temple of Disharmony).

Both albums have such strange covers. On the one hand they are very original, no skulls or graves, but on the other hand, I don't really know what they are supposed to represent? For example, this year I think it's a picture of a rock, but it could easily be falling leaves. Who is the author of the cover and could you please explain a bit how the motif relates to the music?

I created both artworks, and both are photographs. “Idola Specus” is a super-enlarged macro photography, whereas “Procul His” is just a still life. As you can see from the liner notes, the “Procul His” piece is actually the back wall of F. W. Murnau’s sepulchre, covered with ivy. It is a negative with slightly altered colours which makes it a very surreal and strange image.


I don't have the original CD with me yet so I would like to ask what the lyrics are about. Who wrote them and where did they get their inspiration? They sound occult, mysterious, magical.

Greg wrote most of the lyrics this time, except for “Malachite Mirror“ and parts of “Blue Moth Vault“ which were contributed by myself, as well as the title for “Man In Devil In Man“. You could say that our lyrics are rather symbolistic, a collection of atmospheres and impressions, as opposed to storytelling.

Up until 2014, you've only released demos and one EP. You've also had a pretty inconsistent line-up. It's only since 2010 that you seem to have found yourselves. The only original member is the guitarist Tlmnn. Does that mean that he is the main author of the music? Please take us through the history of DROWNED.

True, I write all the music, but of course we make occasional changes to the arrangements when rehearsing, and I don’t pen out the drums. So it’s a group effort nonetheless.

As for the history of the band, from 1992 up until 1998 the core of Drowned was me and then-drummer G. Vermilion with all kinds of other musicians throughout the years. Drowned was then hibernating from 1998 until 2001 when it was resurrected with me and Theby on drums (formerly of Tha-Norr). In 2001 we wrote three of the songs that later appeared on “Viscera Terrae“ (2006). Theby and me relocated to different cities which made rehearsing difficult, and so we called it quits in 2009. In 2010 the constellation with Tobias and Greg materialized, but because everybody was busy with other bands (Essenz, Necros Christos, Android Empire), it wasn’t until 2012 that we started rehearsing on a weekly basis and preparing “Idola Specus“.


You are exactly what I imagine an underground band to be. You play great death metal, but I think only true fans will appreciate it. What are your goals with DROWNED? Would you like to go on a longer tour? Or a big festival? Is there anything else you would like to achieve?

Well, since we aren’t a full-time band, we can only do a certain amount of shows per year. We’ve played a good number of bigger festivals in the past, and are of course looking into playing more now that “Procul His” has been released. We’re currently also planning a small tour for autumn 2024 with our friends in Lucifericon. In addition to that, there might be a couple of shows with Vircolac at some later point.

How did you start with music? Did you go to art school, for example? Or are you self-taught? What were your beginnings? What about your first gig? First performance with a band?

I had about three years of classical guitar lessons as a teenager, so that laid some foundations. The others also had some basic lessons as far as I know, but not much. We are basically dilettantes and proud, haha.


Everybody's influenced by somebody. Who was your role model, your inspiration when you first started and who is today? What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

Oh well ... Too many to mention! Black Sabbath are an eternal inspiration, Celtic Frost, Voivod ... Also Darkthrone through all their stages; the fact that they still find new approaches to what they do, whilst maintaining a high level of quality.

I have a very wide-ranging and eclectic taste, from electronic music to 70s rock and what not. From Klaus Schulze to Rapoon to Drexciya to Bo Hansson to all forms of Metal ... It’s all possible. Today I listened to “The Courage of Others“ by Midlake and “The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other“ by Van der Graaf Generator.

What are DROWNED's plans for the next few months? What can we fans look forward to?

As mentioned above, some more live activity!

Ave DROWNED! Zdravím do berlínských katakomb. Je to už devět let, co jsem vás viděl naposledy naživo. Bylo to v malém klubu v Praze. Pamatuji si, že s vámi hráli RAVENCULT. Koupil jsem si tam vaše první album, které vyšlo v roce 2014. Na to, že hrajete od roku 1992, rozhodně netrpíte nadprodukcí. Novinka „Procul His“ je teprve druhou vaší dlouhohrající deskou. První otázka se tedy nabízí sama. Proč tomu tak je?

Aha, pěkné! Velmi si toho vážíme, díky, že jste přišli! Pokud si vzpomínám, byl to jeden z ne příliš zaplněných koncertů na turné... Abych odpověděl na tvou otázku, asi tři roky po vydání "Idola Specus" jsme hráli hodně koncertů a zkoušeli jen zřídka kvůli kolidujícím programům, denním zaměstnáním atd. a když už jsme zkoušeli, tak jsme se v podstatě museli připravovat na další koncert.

Faktem ale je, že předchozí i letošní album mě doslova rozsekaly. Jak jste novou desku „Procul His“ dlouho skládali, jak materiál vznikal a kam jste se chtěli po těch dlouhých deseti letech posunout?

Díky! Po prvním albu, kromě toho, že jsme po určitou dobu nemohli moc často zkoušet, jsem měl také trochu problém s psaním písní; nějakou dobu jsem prostě nebyl spokojený s tím, co jsem vymýšlel, takže se celý proces prostě protáhl. Z alba pocházejí skladby "Blue Moth Vault" a "Man In Devil In Man" z let 2017/2018, zatímco většina ostatních skladeb byla dokončena mezi rokem 2020 a začátkem roku 2023. Jak už bylo řečeno, mnoho riffů je poměrně starých, ale někdy trvalo roky, než si našly své místo. Co se týče směřování, chtěl jsem v podstatě jen, aby nové skladby získaly trochu na komplexnosti, rychlosti a změnách tempa.


U death metalu je vždy velmi důležitý zvuk. Vy jej máte masivní, temný a chladný. Čitelný a živočišný zároveň, jestli mi rozumíš. Kde jste album nahrávali? Kdo je podepsán pod mixem a masteringem? Jak nahrávání probíhalo?

Stejně jako předchozí album ho nahrál náš bubeník Tobias v naší zkušebně. Je to profesionální zvukař a místo je napěchované nahrávacím zařízením. S bicími a kytarou nám pomohl Michael Zech (také zvukový inženýr a kytarista ve skupinách Ruins of Beverast, Secrets of the Moon ...). O mix se postaral Tobias a mastering Patrick W. Engel (Temple of Disharmony).

Obě alba mají takové zvláštní obaly. Na jednu stranu jsou velmi originální, žádné lebky ani hroby, ale zase na druhou stranu, nevím moc, co mají představovat? Třeba letos si myslím, že je to fotka nějaké skály, ale klidně to může být i tlející listí. Kdo je autorem obalu a mohl bys nám prosím trošku objasnit, jak se vztahuje motiv k hudbě?

Obě díla jsem vytvořil já a obě jsou fotografie. "Idola Specus" je zvětšená makrofotografie, zatímco "Procul His" je jen zátiší. Jak je vidět z průvodních poznámek, dílo "Procul His" je ve skutečnosti zadní stěna hrobky F. W. Murnaua porostlá břečťanem. Jedná se o negativ s mírně pozměněnými barvami, což z něj činí velmi surrealistický a zvláštní obraz.


Nemám u sebe ještě originální CD a tak bych se chtěl zeptat, o čem jsou texty. Kdo je napsal a kde se inspiroval? Zní okultně, záhadně, magicky.

Greg tentokrát napsal většinu textů, kromě "Malachite Mirror" a části "Blue Moth Vault", které jsem napsal já, stejně jako název "Man In Devil In Man". Dalo by se říct, že naše texty jsou spíše symbolistické, jsou souborem atmosfér a dojmů, na rozdíl od vyprávění příběhů.

Až do roku 2014 jste vydávali jen samé demonahrávky a jedno EP. Také jste měli poměrně nestálou sestavu. Teprve až od roku 2010 to vypadá, že jste se našli. Jediným původním členem je kytarista Tlmnn. Znamená to, že on je hlavním autorem hudby? Proveď nás prosím historií DROWNED.

Je pravda, že veškerou hudbu píšu já, ale samozřejmě při zkouškách děláme občasné změny v aranžích a já nepíšu bicí. Takže je to přesto skupinová práce.

Co se týče historie kapely, od roku 1992 až do roku 1998 jsem jádro Drowned tvořil já a tehdejší bubeník G. Vermilion, přičemž v průběhu let se v kapele vystřídali nejrůznější další muzikanti. Od roku 1998 pak Drowned hibernovali až do roku 2001, kdy byli vzkříšeni se mnou a Thebym na bicí (dříve Tha-Norr). V roce 2001 jsme napsali tři skladby, které se později objevily na albu "Viscera Terrae" (2006). S Thebym jsme se přestěhovali do různých měst, což nám ztížilo zkoušení, a tak jsme to v roce 2009 zabalili. V roce 2010 se zhmotnila konstelace s Tobiasem a Gregem, ale protože byli všichni zaneprázdněni jinými kapelami (Essenz, Necros Christos, Android Empire), začali jsme zkoušet na týdenní bázi a připravovat "Idola Specus" až v roce 2012.


Jste přesně tím, co si představuji pod označením undergroundová kapela. Hrajete skvělý death metal, který ale podle mě ocení jen opravdoví fanoušci. Jaké máte vlastně cíle s DROWNED? Chtěli byste třeba na nějaké delší turné? Nebo velký festival? Je něco, čeho byste ještě chtěli dosáhnout?

Jelikož nejsme kapela na plný úvazek, můžeme odehrát jen určitý počet koncertů ročně. V minulosti jsme hráli na spoustě větších festivalů a teď, když vyšel "Procul His", se samozřejmě chystáme hrát víc. V současné době také plánujeme malé turné na podzim 2024 s našimi přáteli z Lucifericonu. Kromě toho se možná někdy později uskuteční i pár koncertů s Vircolac.

Jak si vlastně začínal s muzikou? Chodil si třeba do umělecké školy? Nebo jsi samouk? Jaké byly tvoje začátky? Co první koncert? První vystoupení s kapelou?

V mládí jsem se asi tři roky učil hrát na klasickou kytaru, takže to položilo určité základy. Ostatní měli také nějaké základy, pokud vím, ale ne moc. Jsme v podstatě diletanti a jsme na to hrdí, haha.


Každého někdo ovlivnil. Kdo byl tvým vzorem, inspirací, když si začínal a kdo jím je dnes? Jaká muzika tě baví poslouchat?

No dobře... Je jich příliš mnoho na to, abych je vyjmenoval! Black Sabbath jsou věčnou inspirací, Celtic Frost, Voivod... Také Darkthrone ve všech jejich etapách; fakt, že stále nacházejí nové přístupy k tomu, co dělají, a přitom si udržují vysokou úroveň kvality.

Mám velmi široký a eklektický vkus, od elektronické hudby po rock 70. let a kdovíco ještě. Od Klause Schulzeho přes Rapoon a Drexcii až po Bo Hanssona a všechny formy metalu ... To všechno je možné. Dnes jsem poslouchal "The Courage of Others" od Midlake a "The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other" od Van der Graaf Generator.

Co chystají DROWNED v nejbližších měsících? Na co se můžeme, my fanoušci těšit?

Otevřel jsem okno a málem upadl na zem. Kdysi krásné město bylo najednou zahaleno do šedých mraků. Nebývalé ticho předpovídalo něco děsivého. Mrazilo mě v zádech. Chvíli jsem nevěděl, jestli je to špatný sen nebo hnusná realita. Z katarze mě vytáhl až první blesk, který projel oblohou jako čerstvě nabroušený nůž. Možná jsem si apokalypsu představoval trošku jinak. Méně šílenou, méně bolestivou. Teď už jsem věděl, že není návratu, teď už jsem si byl jistý, že je konec. Absolutní konec.

Mám rád staré sci-fi příběhy. Takové ty temné, divoké, surové. Stejné jako hudba německých black metalistů VORGA. Ti letos přicházejí se svojí druhou dlouhohrající deskou a rovnou musím napsat, že se jedná o hodně návykový, podmanivý materiál. Budete se vznášet tmou a kolem vás bude jenom zlo, špína a nenávist. Ztratíte se ve věčnosti. 


Němci jsou v nových skladbách vznešení, majestátní, ale i syroví a zemití. Jejich black metal je velmi dobře napsaný, rozhodně se nejedná o dnes tolik časté retro. Naopak, pánové se snažili do jednotlivých motivů propašovat zajímavé a neotřelé pasáže. Mají svůj rukopis, vlastní ksicht chcete-li. Určitě znáte ten zvláštní pocit, když letíte letadlem a pod vámi se válí hromada černých mraků. Tak přesně takhle se cítím i při poslechu "Beyond The Palest Star". Jedná se o velmi sugestivní, pestrý materiál, který udělá určitě dobře jak fanouškům klasického, tradičního black metalu, tak i všem, kteří mají bohatou fantazii a nebojí se progresivních prvků. Je vlastně velmi těžké hudbu těchto maniaků definovat a je to tak dobře. Osobně se mi nejvíc líbí takový ten zvláštní neklid v pozadí, který se vznáší kolem jako zkažené výpary. Oceňuji dobře čitelný a chladný zvuk, rád se dívám i na motiv na obalu. Jako celek je album spíše artefaktem, kusem něčeho, co zkrátka chcete mít, vracet se k tomu a často ani nevíte proč. V black metalu si hodně vybírám, na tenhle styl jsem starý zmlsaný pes, ale VORGA mě ihned chytili do svých drápů. Uvolněte se a nechte se unášet do jiných galaxií. Ve všech vás sice čeká jenom smrt a utrpení, ale i tak se budete usmívat. Tady se totiž hraje pro všechny, kteří mají otevřenou mysl. Jedná se opravdu o hodně zajímavou desku. Rozhodně si ji nenechte ujít. Otevřel jsem okno a málem upadl na zem. Kdysi krásné město bylo najednou zahaleno do šedých mraků. Nebývalé ticho předpovídalo něco děsivého. I opened the window and almost fell to the ground. The once beautiful city was suddenly shrouded in grey clouds. The unprecedented silence foretold something terrible. It sent chills down my spine. For a moment, I didn't know if it was a bad dream or an ugly reality. It was only the first lightning bolt that pulled me out of catharsis, cutting through the sky like a freshly sharpened knife. Maybe I imagined the apocalypse a little differently. Less crazy, less painful. Now I knew there was no turning back, now I was sure it was over. The absolute end.

I like old science fiction stories. The dark, wild, raw kind. Like the music of German black metallers VORGA. This year they come with their second full-length album and I must write right away that it is very addictive, captivating material. You will float through the darkness with only evil, filth and hatred around you. You will be lost in eternity.


The Germans are sublime, majestic, but also raw and earthy in their new compositions. Their black metal is very well written, definitely not the retro that is so common today. On the contrary, the gentlemen have tried to sneak interesting and novel passages into each motif. They have their own handwriting, their own face if you like. You must know that strange feeling when you are flying in a plane and there are a bunch of black clouds below you. That's exactly how I feel listening to "Beyond The Palest Star". This is a very suggestive, colourful material that will definitely do good for fans of classic, traditional black metal as well as for all those who have a rich imagination and are not afraid of progressive elements. It's actually very hard to define the music of these maniacs and that's just as well. Personally, what I like the most is that strange uneasiness in the background that hovers around like a corrupted vapor. I appreciate the easy to read and cool sound, I also like looking at the motif on the cover. As a whole, the album is more of an artifact, a piece of something you just want to have, to come back to, and often you don't even know why. I'm very picky when it comes to black metal, I'm an old dog for this style, but VORGA immediately caught me in their claws. Relax and let yourself drift into other galaxies. In all of them, death and misery await you, but you'll still smile. For this is a game for those with an open mind. This is a very interesting record. Don't miss it. Majestic, sublime, chilling, suggestive black metal that takes you on a trip to other worlds! Even a journey can be a destination!

Vždycky sis myslel, že tě poslouchá, že nad tebou drží ochranou ruku. Modlil ses doma, chodil si pravidelně do kostela a dodržoval desatero. Každou ránu, kterou ti život přinesl, si snášel s pokorou. Jenže už nemůžeš. Máš pocit, že tě zradil, že už tě neslyší. Ďábla potkáváš každý den. Má mnoho podob, ale jeho existenci vnímáš. Jeho jedovatá slova, jeho zlé myšlenky. Bůh už tě dávno opustil, zůstala ti jediná pravá víra. Metal! Ne, nedělám si legraci, my staří psi to takhle máme. 

V mé sbírce jsou všechna alba švýcarských MESSIAH. Jako asi každý opravdový fanoušek uctívám staré nahrávky z devadesátých let. Líbila se mi i návratová deska "Fracmont" (2020). Recenzi a skvělý rozhovor naleznete dole pod článkem. Od té doby kapelu bohužel zasáhl osud a zemřel zpěvák Andy Kaina. Zdálo se, že tuhle smečku také opustila víra. Ale oni se vrátili ještě silnější, s novým vokalistou Marcusem Seebachem, který má také parádní a surovější hlas. Nebudu vás déle napínat, novinka "Christus Hypercubus" je vynikající. Je skvělé, jak se MESSIAH stále vyvíjejí. Letos působí ostřeji, syrověji. Smetou vás jako zimní vichřice!

Od té doby, co mám doma album na recenzi, tak pokaždé, když jdu kolem kostela a potkám sochy Ježíše Krista, vzpomenu se na motiv na obalu. Přeběhne mi mráz po zádech a musím si v přehrávači vyhledat a pustit novou nahrávku "Christus Hypercubus". Do žil se mi najednou dostane obrovské množství energie a mám pocit, že mi v krvi kolují malé kousky ledu. Je to hodně návykový materiál. Kombinace death metalu, thrashe a kovové tmy mi vždy dělala dobře a letošní počin si opravdu velmi užívám. Vlastně se mi vůbec nechce nic psát. Raději se toulám ulicemi, navštěvuji staré chrámy, sedávám na hřbitovech a poslouchám nové album. Mám rád, když ve mě kapela dokáže vyvolat emoce, když mě rozdrásá svojí hudbou. MESSIAH jsou letos velmi silní, mají skvělý masivní zvuk (je pod ním podepsán kytarista V.O. Pulver). Kapela předkládá své typické postupy, ale zároveň se dále vyvíjí. Ve skladbách je obsažen určitý neklid, jakási magická přitažlivost. Myslím si, že tohle se nedá naučit. Musíte to mít v sobě. Těžko se to vysvětluje, ale to asi ani dělat nemusí. Staří fanoušci moc dobře vědí, o čem píšu. Atmosféra je podmanivě chladná, záhadná, majestátní. Znovu a znovu otevírám rezavé dveře do kostela a marně v něm hledám víru. Kolem nás je poslední roky možná až příliš zla. Vážím si pak každého dobrého člověka, každé desky, která mě zasáhne, chytí a nepustí. Jsem znovu prokletý a užívám si jednotlivé motivy, nápady plné chladu, temnoty a obracím kříže směrem dolů. Bůh už mě dávno opustil, zůstala mi jediná pravá víra. Heavy thrash death metal, u kterého se vám objeví stigmata! Tohle album hoří jasným černým plamenem!

You took every blow life brought you with humility. But you can't anymore. You feel betrayed, that he can't hear you anymore. You meet the devil every day. He takes many forms, but you sense his existence. His poisonous words, his evil thoughts. God left you long ago, the only true faith you have left. Metal! No, I'm not joking, we old dogs have it like that. 

I have all the Swiss MESSIAH albums in my collection. Like any true fan, I worship old records from the 90s. I also liked the comeback album "Fracmont" (2020). You can find the review and a great interview below the article. Since then, the band has unfortunately been struck by fate and lead singer Andy Kaina has passed away. Faith seemed to have left this pack as well. But they've come back even stronger, with new vocalist Marcus Seebach, who also has an awesome and raw voice. I won't bore you any longer, the new song "Christus Hypercubus" is excellent. It's great how MESSIAH is still evolving. This year they are more edgy, more raw. They will sweep you away like a winter storm!

Since I have the album at home for review, every time I walk by a church and see statues of Jesus Christ, I think of the motif on the cover. A chill runs down my spine and I have to search for and play the new recording of "Christus Hypercubus" in my player. Suddenly, a huge amount of energy enters my veins and I feel like there are little bits of ice in my blood. It's very addictive stuff. The combination of death metal, thrash and metallic darkness has always done me good and I'm really enjoying this year's release. Actually I don't want to write anything at all. I prefer to wander the streets, visit old temples, sit in cemeteries and listen to the new album. I like it when a band can evoke emotions in me, when they tear me apart with their music. MESSIAH are very strong this year, they have a great massive sound (guitarist V.O. Pulver is signed to it). The band puts forward their typical methods, but at the same time they continue to evolve. There is a certain restlessness in the compositions, a kind of magical attraction. I don't think that can be taught. You have to have it in you. It's hard to explain, but I don't think you have to do that. Old fans know what I'm writing about. The atmosphere is captivatingly cool, mysterious, majestic. I open the rusty door to the church again and again, searching in vain for faith. Perhaps there has been too much evil around us of late. I appreciate then every good person, every record that reaches me, grabs me and doesn't let go. I am cursed again and I enjoy the individual motifs, the ideas full of coldness, darkness and I turn the crosses downwards. God left me long ago, the only true faith left. Heavy thrash death metal that will give you the stigmata! This album burns with a bright black flame!

Chodil za tebou každý den. Neustále dokola opakoval stejná slova. O víře, o rozhřešení, o pochopení. Byl jako slizký had, jako našeptávač, jehož jedovaté sliny tě nakazí těžkou nemocí. Říkal ti, že si prokletý, že shoříš jednou v pekle. Pokaždé, když tě potkal, tak se začal modlit za tvoji zkaženou duši. Už si to nemohl vydržet. Raději si obrátil kříže směrem dolů a zapálil je. Začaly hořet černým plamenem. Otevřel sis pivo a začal poslouchat novou desku finských black metalistů NOCTURNAL SORCERY. Ihned si věděl, že tohle je jediná pravá víra. Black metal nesmí nikdy zemřít. Pokud budou hrát podobné smečky, strach o to rozhodně nemám.

Druhé dlouhohrající album je poctivým návratem do starých katakomb. Chlad, absolutní tma a nahrubo nasekané zlo. Tohle vše zde naleznete a ještě něco navíc. Ostré, mrazivé riffy, chorobný vokál a bicí, které vám vyrvou vnitřnosti z těla. Zapalte další ohně!

Základem je tradiční black metal z devadesátých let minulého století. Pokud máte rádi kapely jako MARDUK, DARK FUNERAL, IMMORTAL, hraje se zde i pro vás. Nahrávka možná působí zpočátku lehce monotónně a genericky, ale nenechte se mýlit. Opak je pravdou. Na povrch postupně vylezou motivy, které se vám dostanou do hlavy jako ostny z trnové koruny. Poslouchat "Captive in the Breath of Life" je jako se dívat na řeku plnou utopenců, jako na alej ve které se na stromech kývají těla oběšenců. Když novinku poslouchám, připadám si jako nemrtvý, který jde navštívit své kamarády na kopec, na kterém se prováděly popravy. Setnout hlavu, lámat v kole, pověsit na háky. Jednotlivé skladby jsou velmi jedovaté, zákeřné a neklidné. Jedná se spíše o starodávný obřad, než jen o obyčejnou desku. Ponuré a chladné atmosféře je podřízeno úplně vše. Zvuk, obal, produkce. Všechno je syrové a ošklivé, jako ruka mrtvoly, kterou přijmete. Čerstvý hrob, ve kterém byl kdysi pohřbený padlý mnich. NOCTURNAL SORCERY hrají uvěřitelně, opravdově, syrově a nekompromisně. Často jsem si u poslechu vzpomněl na svoje začátky, když jsme sedávali před repráky a stále dokola přehrávali staré kazety. Do téhle doby tahle smečka patří. Chodil za tebou každý den. Neustále dokola opakoval stejná slova. O víře, o rozhřešení, o pochopení. Byl jako slizký had, jako našeptávač, jehož jedovaté sliny tě nakazí těžkou nemocí. Říkal ti, že si prokletý, že shoříš jednou v pekle. Nezbývalo nic jiného, než jej ukřižovat pomocí hudby. Antihumánní, ryzí, syrový black metal! Zapalte ohně! Tohle album vás spálí na popel ledovým plamenem!

The second full-length album is an honest return to the old catacombs. Cold, absolute darkness and roughly chopped evil. All that and more can be found here. Sharp, chilling riffs, sick vocals and drums that will rip the guts out of your body. Light more fires!

The basis is traditional black metal from the 90s of the last century. If you like bands like MARDUK, DARK FUNERAL, IMMORTAL, this is the band for you. The record may seem a bit monotonous and generic at first, but don't be fooled. The opposite is true. Motifs will gradually come to the surface, which will get into your head like thorns from a crown of thorns. Listening to "Captive in the Breath of Life" is like looking at a river full of drowned people, like an alley in which the bodies of hanged men are swinging from the trees. Listening to the news, I feel like an undead going to visit his friends on the hill where the executions were carried out. Beheaded, broken in a wheel, hung from hooks. The individual tracks are very venomous, insidious and unsettling. This is more of an ancient ceremony than a simple slab. Everything is subordinated to the gloomy and cold atmosphere. The sound, the cover, the production. Everything is raw and ugly, like the hand of a corpse you accept. A fresh grave where a fallen monk was once buried. NOCTURNAL SORCERY play believable, real, raw and uncompromising. Often while listening to them, I thought back to my early days when we used to sit in front of the speakers and play old tapes over and over again. That's where this pack belongs.
