A few questions - ínterview with death/thrash metal band LUNA IN SANGUINEM from USA.

A few questions - ínterview with death/thrash metal band LUNA IN SANGUINEM from USA.

Interview answered by Michael Eisenhauer Guitarist and co founding member of Luna In Sanguinem, thank you!

1. Can you introduce your band to our readers? When was it founded and what style of Music do you play etc.?

EvilMike - I started the band Luna In Sanguinem with our drummer Patt Maxwell after he left Wrath and I had some time after recording Evil Incarnate “Depopulation Agenda” Album. I had 2 songs already to go and changed my guitar tuning to Drop A and we got started doing this in Winter of 2018. After Patt had the drums he wanted down and we tightened up the songs we asked old friend Rod Valdez from local band Dementox to join on Bass. We had been wanting a singer but in order to move things along I started writing lyrics and doing the vocals myself so we could play live shows after we had enough material. It was later that we joined forces with Skip McGullam from Num Skull.

2. Where and under what conditions were you recording the new Album? Who was in charge of sound, Production and Mastering?

EvilMike - We Recorded with Scott Creakmore at Mercenary Digital Studios in Zion Illinois. We started with me playing Guitar to a click track after setting tempos with a Guitar scratch track (to be replaced later) and then the Drums could be Recorded. After Drums I did all The actual Guitar tracks and then Rod played bass and I did Vocals. Once that was finished Patt did some back up parts and I did the Guitar solos. It was when we were in process of Scott getting a Pre Mix ready for us to hear when Skip joined the band. It was decided that if he was going to be our Singer that he would need to go into the studio and Record his voice instead. We kept a few of my growls and some back up parts on my vocals. Scott Creakmore handles everything in his studio. Recording, Mixing and Mastering. We Produced our own Recording Financially. We make suggestions to Scott as to sounds but generally he knows exactly what we want. I would highly Recommend him to anyone.

3. How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition ( CD, Digital, Vynal, Cassette?)

EvilMike - We only released this Debut EP Global Bloodbath Digitally and onto CDs. It is available anywhere you might want to find a Band such as ours on Digital and as for copies we Released 200 more simple free CDs and 200 Digipack more elaborate copies ourselves. We also just had a purchase from The Metalhead Box to buy from us 200 additional Digipack Pro CDs for subscribers. So in total 600 Pro CDs have been released in the past few months. We have not yet made the decisions to release this onto Vynal or Cassette.

4. Who is the Author of the lyrics and how were they created and what do the lyrics deal with?

EvilMike - I am the one who writes all of our lyrics. Usually I have some ideas already from notes I keep and I either write lyrics first and they fit to a song with some additional changes I make or I have the song done music first and then I take my notes and write to the music. Occasionally I start with a Catchy Chorus I have written and all I have is this Chorus riff and Lyrics only as a Chorus and it builds from there, so it depends. I am always trying to keep things a little different without straying from the sound I originally imagined for this band.

In my other band Evil Incarnate I was trapped in a box with lyrical topics. In this band Luna In Sanguinem it is great that I can write about anything I want to. It can go anywhere from subjects like Artificial Intelligence and CERN to Vampires or Murder. Maybe I will write about Alien Forces and Gods of old or Atlantic and The New World Order. but I have much freedom and it is a nice change. I doubt I will ever run out of ideas. Although we are not a Religious band and we also are not Political we do enjoy our Constitution and do not support Communism. Maybe this would work into a song sometime.

5. Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the web site? What about you and Social Networks? Do you consider these things are important?

EvilMike - In today’s World Social Network’s are extremely important. Unless you have a lot of Money for Magazine ads and Mailing copies of CDs all over The World to every Radio Station and Magazine or Zine and for Radio Ads and all the old ways on steroids ( Music Scene is so huge now) you must do social media. Now we can submit MP3S to 10 places a day for no cost but time. Of course you still must do ads and Physical copies but it’s much faster and easier now so I do not mind. I miss the old days but I am now use to the new.

Our Logo is something our Drummer designed with the concept coming from the name itself. Luna In Sanguinem is Latin and basically means something like “under the blood moon.” We chose this name together as a band. About any Social Network designing that has so far been done all of our band pages were done also by Patt. We do not yet have a Web Page only things like Facebook and such.

6. Which Label did you choose for releasing your Album and why did you choose this Label ? Are you satisfied by How your Label represents you and takes care of you?

EvilMike - we do not have a Record Label and are not interested in one at the moment. We do have a few we speak with about potentially releasing our band but I don’t want to say at this tune who that might be. If we decide it is in our best interests we will then make a public announcement. The Label would have to be able to do for us what we cannot currently do for ourselves.

7. Which bands do you idolize and where do you get your inspiration?

EvilMike - This is always the most difficult question because it can change for me from one week to the next. Sure a lot of bands will always remain in my top 20 list and I am always listening to new UG stuff but some days I am in the mood to hear stuff like old Metallica and King Diamond or Merciful Fate, other days I am strictly Ultra Brutal DM and Slam bands like Organectomy , Putrid Pile, Analepsy and Suffocation & Dying Fetus and another day I am all about Judas Priest,W.A.S.P. or Slayer and Exodus or Dark Angel. Probably my favorite Metal era is 89/92 DM and my favorite style would be Swedish DM Like Dismember or Grave and Entrails. I may be also in a BM mood and play Satyricon or Dimmu Borgir or Hell Hammer & Bathory.

8. Did you send your Record to some Labels - which are the Labels? How was the response?

EvilMike- I sent it to several Larger and also Smaller Labels. Of course there are much more but It isn’t a priority at this time so I stopped. We have been doing a good job ourselves so far and still have a lot of work to do. A Label will be found eventually and until then we are happy with what we have accomplished and will soon accomplish.

9. How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it’s (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

EvilMike - this band has yet to play Festivals but in years past we enjoyed these very much with our bands. I do enjoy a larger crowd but I must admit I also enjoy a smaller one. I have no personal preference. I just enjoy being on stage. I do however hate small cramped Stages because I like to move a lot. I think it has been around 25 shows Luna in Sanguinem have played so far in just over one year of being a band.

10. What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

EvilMike - We have long distance shows booking now as a priority for 2021 playing to potential fans who have yet to hear about us in far away states in USA. We may do a longer Tour later in the same year. For sure we are Recording another EP this Winter and will also release this ourselves in the exact same way as Global Bloodbath.

After this we will look for that Record Label. Maybe something will happen sooner but we are enjoying this and in no hurry. It has to be great for us.

I am going to start trading our CDs soon and getting them into Distros & Stores soon as well. We want to be on top and we know this is possible for our band.

11. How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

Thanks for the Interview.

EvilMike - We are currently represented by our PR firm Imperative Agency so if you get our release from them contact for interviews or Merchandise thru our YouTube account and Instagram, Band Camp & find us on Spotify, I Tunes or Amazon and I am also on Facebook as Michael Eisenhauer or the band at Luna In Sanguinem Facebook Page- Log into Facebook

Recenze/review - LOUDBLAST - Manifesto (2020)

LOUDBLAST - Manifesto
CD 2020, Listenable Records

for english please scroll down

Také máte pocit, že nastaly divné časy? Máme se velmi dobře, spojuje nás všechny obrovská síť. Informace, pokud o ně stojí, získá úplně každý. Přesto je najednou všude kolem vidět čím dál tím víc nenávisti, jedovatých slin. Lidé jsou jako ovce jdoucí na porážku. Celé to připomíná staré sci-fi knížky, takhle nějak začínala apokalypsa.

Pánové mě vzali do svého světa, plného temných a monumentálních melodií.

Perfektní zvuk a produkci, zajímavý obal.

Asphyx says:

Do you also feel that strange times have come? We are very well connected, we are connected by a huge network. Everyone, if they care about them, will get the information. Yet suddenly, more and more hatred, poisonous saliva, can be seen all around. People are like sheep going to slaughter. It all resembles old sci-fi books, this is how the apocalypse began. Gradually, we forgot about traditional values, about honest and sincere work. We meet deception and hypocrisy several times a day, we are afraid to tell the truth. Luckily, I have music to which I can run to. Yet.

The return after six long years was a success for the French legend LOUDBLAST. In my opinion, excellent. The gentlemen took me into their world, full of dark and monumental melodies. I feel a great power from the songs, which in my opinion is best passed on by bands of a similar nature. The world is still fine here!

"Manifesto" is a traditional material, but also a perfectly executed craft. The record is very well listenable, after a few listings I know that it will circulate in my veins for a long time. LOUDBLAST can be stylistically classified among bands such as MASSACRA, DEATH, MERCYLESS, AGRESSOR, PESTILENCE, THANATOS. But the comparison is not very important. On French bards, I especially like the approach to music as such. The songs are elaborate, they contain a clear and distinct structure. Perfect sound and production, interesting cover. But a lot of bands can do all this at the moment. In addition, LOUDBLAST have a great deal of talent for writing motifs that are interesting, raw, mysterious, and I wouldn't be afraid to write magical ones. The first albums of this legend are, of course, shrouded in memories and an aura of nostalgia. I like them very much myself, but the gentlemen certainly don’t have to be shame for new material. On the contrary, it is a varied mixture of mostly dark and cold moods. Occasional trips to progressive waters are refreshing and I already know that "Manifesto" will have a long shelf life and its place of honor in my player. I like to return to the record, walk the streets with it and watch today's corrupt world. Sophisticated, intelligent death thrash metal from masters in the field! Great recording!

Recenze/review - HELL:ON - Scythian Stamm (2020)

HELL:ON - Scythian Stamm
CD 2020, Hell Serpent Music

for english please scroll down

Ukrajinští death thrasheři HELL:ON na to jdou velmi podobně.

HELL:ON nejsou zbytečně suroví, když to není potřeba, spíše si hrají s náladami, jsou temní a záhadní. Některé výlety směřují až k ANNIHILATOR, SOUFLY, SLAYER, BOLT THROWER. Těch vlivů a různých zajímavých momentů zde nalezneme opravdu velké množství. A přesně takoví jsou i HELL:ON. Velmi dobře!

sumarizace:

Každý den k večeru, když nebe ztěžkne a prší krev, se zúčastňuji černých mší plných zaříkávání, reálného a syrového death/thrash/black metalu. Vždy moji tvář ovane závan větru ze záhrobí. Máme zde co do činění s opravdovým pekelným ohněm.

"Scythian Stamm" je nebývale temným albem. HELL:ON mi připomínají padlé kněze, kteří dávno ztratili svoji víru. Představte si vysokou zeď, postavenou z kamení, železa, špíny, smrti a nenávisti. Padá vám přímo na vaši hruď, dusí vás, drtí nebývalou silou. HELL:ON mě přesvědčili na svoji temnou stranu, podmanili si mou duši a navěky mě prokleli.

Asphyx says:

When listening to the new album "Scythian Stamm" of an Ukraina band HELL:ON I have the feeling that I am really locked up in an old cell. Every day in the evening, when the sky becomes heavy and the blood is raining, I participate in black masses full of invocation, real and raw death/thrash/black metal. My face is always blown with wind from the tombs. We are dealing with the real hell fire.

"Scythian Stamm" is an unusually dark album. HELL:ON reminds me of fallen priests who have lost their faith long time ago. Today they are experienced and highly believable chants. Their music reminds me of writhing cluster of snakes which were burned with hot iron and they decided to get back at the world. From their songs you can feel darkness, blasphemy and the endless cold. Imagine a high wall made out of stones, iron, dirt, death and hate. It is falling right on your chest, it suffocates you, smashing you with unprecedented strength. THE HELL:ON convinced me on their dark side, they conquered my soul and cursed me forever. They meet my highest requirements for ritual ceremonies. The heaven is burning again! The death is holding endless orgies! Death metal which will burn you to ashes!

Recenze/review - THE CORONA LANTERN - Certa Omnibus Hora (2020)

THE CORONA LANTERN - Certa Omnibus Hora
CD 2020, Metalgate Records

for english please scroll down

Mám divný pocit a tak si sednu před bílou plochu textového editoru a poslouchám novou desku českých THE CORONA LANTERN. Kapely, kterou jsem zatím bohužel nikdy neviděl naživo. Přesto cítím a  slyším znovu spoustu pochmurných emocí a nálad.

Jsou ale uvnitř, uvnitř mého těla i hudby THE CORONA LANTERN. Kapela má svůj jasný výraz, směr a cíl. Potkává se zde doom metal s nihilismem i progresivními prvky. Tři týdny album poslouchám a každý den nahlížím do protějšího domu.

Asphyx says:

It's three o'clock in the morning and I was awakened by a strange feeling in my stomach. There is fog around our house, but on the opposite side I see the silhouette of a figure in a chair. He probably can't sleep either. I have a weird feeling, so I sit in front of the white surface of a text editor and listen to the new album of Czech band THE CORONA LANTERN. A band I've unfortunately never seen live before. Nevertheless, I feel and hear a lot of gloomy emotions and moods again.

The whole new album "Certa Omnibus Hora" is interspersed by a gloomy, sad atmosphere. They call themselves as post doom metal. I don't know, genres aren't important to me. The main thing for me is that I got dressed and went out. I waved to the lady in the window and headed up over the city. It is slowly dawning, the riffs are scratching into my head. The songs are very well written, they have a drive and a reputation for strength. THE CORONA LANTERN's music is perfect for a foggy autumn morning.

In today's overproduction of music, I often come across the fact that many groups just “play” the presented style, pretend it. Detached from reality, the current virtual world allows them to do it. But this is not the case with the new album "Certa Omnibus Hora". It immediately tilted me to its side. It's raw, believable. I have to tread quietly, I do so even in the light, when the early morning ghosts seem to pass. But they are inside, inside my body and the music of THE CORONA LANTERN. It's easy to evaluate the formal side of things - the cover, the overall graphics, sound and production, everything is on a professional level. The band has its clear expression, direction and goal. They can wake me at three in the morning and make me look at the house opposite. Today, maybe the lady is smiling or it just seems to me. From that point of view, as well as from the recording, I feel loneliness, rest, sadness, physical transience, the Buddhists will certainly agree with me. I like the overall performance of the band, the songs stick together, they are clearly targeted. At the same time, they are bubbling like hot lava beneath the surface. Doom metal meets nihilism and progressive elements here. I listen to the album for three weeks and look at the opposite house every day. The lady was long time dead, she was just a lone silhouette that no one missed. Sometimes it's weird what music connects to me and how it affects me. This time it was a gray haze, a cold mist, the exact definition of strange dreams. It is very important for me that the music fascinates me with something, awakens a shiver in me, a claw gets stuck in me. This year, THE CORONA LANTERN did very well. They are a very pleasant, but also sad refreshment in autumn days.

Recenze/review - CADAVER PUTREFACTO - Ritual de exsanguinación (2020)

CADAVER PUTREFACTO - Ritual de exsanguinación
CD 2020, vlastní vydání

for english please scroll down

Okouzlující manžel a milující otec.

Argentinci tohle všechno umí a dělají to skvěle. Skvěle napsané, složené a zahrané. Navíc dostanete obrovskou ránu do obličeje, hudba vás opravdu rozdrtí na prach. Excelentní death metal s hororovým nádechem!

Asphyx says:

A small farm outside the city has always been a popular place. Lots of smiles, in the middle of nature. Animals and people in mutual symbiosis. So it was a big shock for everyone to find their first mutilated body. Everyone was shocked by the perpetrator's brutality. There was talk of a beast circling the area. In the end, however, it turned out that the killer was an ordinary guy from the family, kind and sociable. Charming husband and loving father. Evil sometimes hides very deep and is difficult to discover.

But there are bands that can depict, play and transfer it to music. Argentine CADAVER PUTREFACTO took me on a death metal trip to similar places on their second full-length album. Not far from the city, where pieces of human meat hang on hooks in an old barn.

For me, bands that can smuggle darkness into their songs, coldness that can convince my ears to listen more, always win. Argentines can do all this and they do it great. The songs have a clear structure, the motifs immediately settled in my head. The gentlemen are loosely inspired by bands such as CANNIBAL CORPSE, SIX FEET UNDER, DEICIDE, ETERNAL GRAVE, but also colleagues AVERNAL, SADISTIC KILL, ZOOFILIA. Of course, they have their own expression, sound and you will recognize them among others. Personally, I like the most ancient black energy that attacks me while listening to the whole album. "Ritual de exsanguinación" is a material for all true fans of pure real death metal. There is nothing left or missing anywhere and you can fully enjoy the blood bath. Joint meetings are similar to those that can be experienced in ancient cemeteries. The album is like a sacrifice to crazy demons. Well written, composed and played. Plus, you get a huge blow to the face, the music really crushes you to dust. Excellent death metal with a touch of horror!

Recenze/review - QUESTION - Reflections of the Void (2020)

QUESTION - Reflections of the Void

Zavřeli mě ihned do staré kobky, nechali pomalu hnít zaživa. A neplatí to jenom v muzice. QUESTION to moc dobře vědí. Hodně prašivá záležitost!

sumarizace:

Mám rád nahrávky, které se mi do krve dostávají postupně, pomalu."Reflections of the Void" je jako jed, pronikající do mých žil. Prašivý, starý death metal, chorobami nasáklé skladby, odér smrti a strachu. Všechno tohle zde najdete přesně a zkušeně nadávkované.

QUESTION uchopili death metal podobným způsobem, jako to dělávají kapely typu INCANTATION, CENOPATH, DEMIGOD, IMMOLATION, MERCYLESS, CARBONIZED, MORBUS CHRON. Pohřbeni zaživa, umírali pomalu a dlouho. Okultní death metal s uhrančivou atmosférou! Excelentní pocta stínům!

Asphyx says:

I like records that get into my blood gradually, slowly. "Reflections of the Void" is like a poison penetrating my veins. Dreadful, old death metal, disease-soaked songs, an odor of death and fear. All this you will find here accurately and expertly dosed. It's nice to be locked in a wooden casket called QUESTION.

I have been wandering the underworld for a long time and I can safely declare that the album "Reflections of the Void" definitely worth for listening and closer inspection. QUESTION grabbed death metal in a similar way as INCANTATION, CENOPATH, DEMIGOD, IMMOLATION, MERCYLESS, CARBONIZED, MORBUS CHRON do. This is exactly the kind of occult dark death metal with doom elements that can evoke. I recommend visiting the cemetery in the evening with headphones, a long walk through the night streets, or a room full of darkness and winter. At these moments, the album stands out best. I enjoy a gloomy, wrinkling sound, watching the skull on the cover. It was as if someone had ripped another piece of flesh out of my body with each riff. I walk among the shadows, sifting the dust of the dead in my hands. Like the band, Satan is able to change his face and his anger is projected into individual songs. I feel like I've ever been to this place before. Old abandoned church, crypt in which fallen priests are buried. Screams of pain are imprinted on the walls. Buried alive, they died slowly and long. Occult death metal with a mesmerizing atmosphere! Excellent tribute to the shadows!

Recenze/review - INVINCIBLE FORCE - Decomposed Sacramentum (2020)

INVINCIBLE FORCE - Decomposed Sacramentum
CD 2020, Dark Descent Records

for english please scroll down

Našel jsem další zohavené tělo. Několikáté v dlouhé řadě. Pohozené u cesty, bez očí a s přelámanými kostmi. Je to on? Tolik bolesti, smutku a beznaděje.

To nejlepší z prašivého thrash metalu. Přidána je černota a několik tun ryzí smrti. Jakoby MORBID ANGEL potkali SLAYER, SADISM, MORTEM, PERVERSOR, DARK ANGEL, DEICIDE, a byli pohřbeni zaživa. "Decomposed Sacramentum" je jako otisk starých dobrých metalových časů. Výlet do doby, kdy se ještě hrálo neurvale, songy smrděly sírou a smrt nebyla jen prázdným pojmem. Novinka je nebývale syrová a surová. Zabalená v bílých pavučinách i krvavé mlze. Kult smrti!

Asphyx says:

I found another mutilated body. Several times in a long line. Thrown by the road, without eyes and with broken bones. Perverted human nature, mysterious death rituals. Occasionally I saw a hooded figure at the scene, with a strange smile. Is that him? My killer? I wandered in the fog, through the night streets, hoping for an early meeting. The mood was gloomy, death was very close. I literally felt it through all the pores of my body. Cut out heart, when will this end? So much pain, sadness and hopelessness.

Awakened from a nightmare, I was looking for an album that would rid me of nightmares. I chose the new Chilean maniac INVINCIBLE FORCE and instead of resting, I fell completely into hell. A band composed of demons, which has been moving in the deepest death thrash black metal underground since 2007. Dirty sound, cold practices, meeting the undead. Such are The gentlemen this year as well.

What to expect from a band named after a song from the famous DESTRUCTION? The best of dusty thrash metal. Blackness and several tons of pure death are added. It was as if MORBID ANGEL met SLAYER, SADISM, MORTEM, PERVERSOR, DARK ANGEL, DEICIDE, and were buried alive. "Decomposed Sacramentum" is like the imprint of the good old metal times. A trip to a time when it was still being played erratically, the songs smelled of sulfur and death was not just an empty concept. The novelty is unusually raw. Wrapped in white cobwebs and bloody mist. The music is composed according to old proven methods and contains a lot of killer elements from the eighties and nineties. On top with the believability of a dusty sound and unclean, demonic production. INVINCIBLE FORCE move in catacombs with elegance and obviousness. The songs are very believable and immediately got under my skin. Satanic rituals are performed with precision and great pressure. All that remains is scorched earth and mutilated bodies. When I go to look at the crime scene again, I know what I'm going to listen to. Devastating black / death / thrash metal from the hands of this band. A band that will cut you into small pieces! The cult of death!

Interview - SKELETHAL - I personally think of death metal and metal in general as an entire state of mind.

Interview with old school death metal band from France - SKELETHAL.

Answered Guillaume, Julien, Lorenzo, Lucas, thank you!

Translated Petra, thank you!

Recenze/review - SKELETHAL - Unveiling the Threshold (2020):

Ave SKELETHAL! Greetings to the French underworld. I hope you are doing well. I'm just listening to your new album "Unveiling the Threshold" and I feel like I'm in an old cemetery. It is excellent in one word! How did the album come about and where did you want to move on in comparison to the equally good previous album "Of the Depths ..."?

Guillaume: Hello Jakub! At first thank you for your words about our music. With ''Unveiling the Threshold'' we decided to inject more influences than previously. With the new line-up we were able to reach a new level of song writing. We tried to keep the Skelethal touch and spirit but added more blast beats, more double bass drum and more violence and efficiency into the new songs.

Let's go straight to the new record "Unveiling the Threshold". It is decorated with great cover art by Eliran Kantor. I immediately had to order a T-shirt, I was so interested in the motif. I perceive it as an apocalypse, an underground storm. How did you get together with Eliran and why did you choose his work? And how does the motif relate to music?

Guillaume: We asked Eliran Kantor because we like his work and wanted the cover to be a real painting, a materialised piece of art. We just sent him an email with the project, he agreed and and sent us a preview sketch few months after the deal. We asked him a tormented landscape, with monolithic monuments emerging from a boiling sea.

The honest old school death metal you play must have a dark and raw sound. If I'm not mistaken, your new record was mixed by Greg Wilkinson (Earhammer Studios). Why did you choose this studio? And where did you physically record the new songs? Somewhere at your home in France?

Guillaume: Alike ''Of the Depths...'' we decided not to mix/master the second album ourselves. We struggled to achieve a good result with the first album and never got something we really liked. So we thought it would be best to put it in the hands of a professional. Nonetheless we decided to record all the instruments by ourselves to keep control on the sound direction. We did that in our rehearsal room in Tourcoing.

Julien: Before getting straight into the recording process, we had many discussions within the band, so every choice was reflected before doing anything. Finally, after a lot of DIY recording stuffs, growing our musical and technical skills over the years, we finally thought we could handle this work quite well. With a bit of extra help from friends to get mics gear etc we finally did a good work on this one. Thanks to Greg who did an amazing work in a very short time, his abilities to mix sounds fitted just perfectly with the vision of our music.

Lorenzo: These recent years there has been an exciting OSDM scene mainly coming from he US but not only. All of us in Skelethal really appreciate some of those bands behind which for most of them you can find Greg in the mixing and mastering duties. It is mainly for this reason that we chose him to take part in this process for “Unveiling the Threshold”. I personally love the raw and dirty sound he manages to achieve while still allowing the listener to hear every instrument quite clearly. I find that it’s a balance that is hard to achieve in old school extreme metal. Often you have excellent albums which for the sake of that sound we love so much had to overshadow on some instruments.

What are the lyrics on the new album about? I don't have an original CD yet, but I assume you stick to traditional death metal topics. Or am I wrong? Where do you get inspiration for lyrics and who is their author?

Guillaume: I write all the lyrics, it's easier since I will have to sing them. Skelethal lyrics are strongly tainted with Lovecraft universe and also many other sci-fi / horror writers. Some of my favorite are: Poe, Asimov, Van Vogt, Silverberg, Matheson, Curval, Steiner, Verne…

For a long time, you worked as a band only in two (Gui and Lucas), but since 2019 the Metal Encylopedia has been presenting both Lorenzo and Jon as members of SKELETHAL. Other musicians, Simon Lemaire and Hélène Leroy help you perform alive. I admit that I have a bit of chaos in that. Can you please tell us who is a member of SKELETHAL?

Guillaume: Skelethal was formed in 2012 as a two-member band (me and Jon) up until 2018. We worked with live members (Simon, Hélène, Lucas…) for a long time until 2018 when I split with Jon (drums). After the split I decided that the band would become a real four-piece. Lucas who was our live guitarist for many years legitimately integrated the band as a full-time member and we researched for a bassist and a drummer in order to get a stable line-up. We rapidly found Lorenzo (drums) and Julien (bass) and Skelethal rehearsed again in January 2019.

Lucas : As Guillaume wrote, the band remained a duo until late 2018. I began playing guitar live for Skelethal in 2014 replacing Simon the previous session guitarist. Hélène on the other hand was already the live bassist up until Julien took the lead. I did a lot of gigs with the band so when I had the opportunity to become an "official" member it was very motivating to get more involved in the project. It was always a pleasure for me to play with Jon and Hélène but with Lorenzo and Julien we found great musicians and adorable people. They rapidly became true friends of ours so now we have a really solid line-up which will surely allow us to make great things in the future.

In recent years, a lot of great death metal bands have been coming to reviews from France. Randomly, for example, my very favorite NECROWRETCH. How does your scene work? Do people go to concerts a lot? Do they support groups?

Guillaume: The french scene is a bit scattered in my opinion. There is not a lot of people and bands really involved in the Underground. Fortunately this handful of people keep this small scene alive and strong. Necrowretch are important because they kind of draw attention again to the french underground metal. They are one of the most aggressive sounding band nowadays and beasts on stage. We played a few gigs with them and hope to cross their path again soon.

Julien: For what I can see now, many extreme bands from France nowadays try to have exposure in foreign countries first and then get back to the French scene. I’d say that if you’re a French band and you’re coming out of nowhere into the scene, French people will not pay so much attention. I also think the underground scene now is more into this new fastcore scene which has more punk and hardcore influences. Death metal is definitely not at the forefront of our musical generation.

Lucas: There are some great bands here but we don't have many good places to play. For example, in our hometown (Lille) a lot of venues had to close in the past ten years. It has become more difficult for us to play here. However there are still good venues in France, with receptive crowds and supporting fans, and there are some people who are ready to travel a lot across the country to attend to underground events.

Lorenzo: Though playing in Skelethal I live in Brussels (Belgium) a couple of hours away from the band’s hometown. Coming from another country I can see quite some interesting features of the French scene. It’s a scene that grows a lot locally, where fans are very enthusiast about supporting national bands. I think in France we can really talk of one big family with close relationship between the fans and the bands. However, it’s also a scene that has difficulties expanding outside of its borders which is sad because even though there are a lot of great bands, in the end very few French bands make it outside of the country.

The world is currently being destroyed by a coronavirus, but we hope that it will soon pass. Aren't you going on tour when the borders reopen? You will have a new record released, so it would be desirable. How are you actually doing with the concerts? Do you play often? Do you rather enjoy clubs or big stages?

Guillaume: I personally like both clubs and bigger stages. Nowadays nothing is doable and we still don't know when gigs could happen again. It's really a pain in the ass to promote the new album and we hope to reach the stage again soon.

Julien: everything is so fucked up, even if we could play in basements or caves it would be killer as we are so hungry doing shows again! We have to make the promo of the new album but in the same time all the shows are cancelled so it’s very difficult. Hopefully we hope the new record will receive a good attention regardless so we can still sell our merch online, that’s the only thing left until we can see much clearer about the sanitary situation worldwide.

Lucas : I really love playing in small clubs where people get crazy, it feels like you really share something with them. I also like the big scenes and I hope we'll be able to have more opportunities with the release of the new album. I can't wait to play live again, for me it's the most enjoyable thing as a musician.

Lorenzo: Though of course all shows being cancelled is already a struggle in itself, I think one of the most difficult aspect of the pandemic is that we cannot plan anything. We would love to do an actual tour and promote decently the album live, but as of now it’s impossible to plan anything before the summer. However, we normally already had a great year planned a head with quite some festival appearances. We were also scheduled to play at Asakusa Death Fest in Japan around the release date of the album but of course this was cancelled. Hopefully when shows will start again promoters will still be interested in releases that by that time will already be several months old if not a year old (hopefully not that long before shows happen again). It is worth noting also that even if shows do happen in a couple of months they will surely be limited by corona safety restrictions. With limited number of tickets promoters will only organize safe concerts where they are sure to recoup the costs. This means no more international bands playing your area if not for bigger bands that are sure to sell out to people willing to pay bigger ticket fees. It is a difficult period to promote correctly a new album.

The last time we made an interview, we talked about which bands influenced you. But do you also like some current ones? Would you recommend us, for example, some bands from your surroundings? I like the French underground very much, but I certainly don't know all the bands.

Guillaume: Mortal Scepter, Cadaveric Fumes, Liquid Flesh, Epitaphe, Savagery, Atavisma, Disfuneral...

Lucas : Pretty much the same for me!

Lorenzo: I would definitely recommend people to listen to Lucas’s other band Mortal Scepter, it really is a killer thrash metal band! I think it is worth mentioning Aggressor and Massacra of course, but also Mercyless.

You play old, dusty, dark death metal. How are the new songs created? I mean the process itself, the formation of riffs. Do you meet classically somewhere in the rehearsal room or do you already use only modern technology?

Guillaume: In my case It always starts with guitar riffs I find while playing in my room at home. Then I work on drums lines. There is also a lot of work inside my head, I think a lot about how to improve what I already wrote and how must be the song structure. Lyrics are always the last step, but I usually already know how and where they will be.

Lucas : I only wrote riffs for two songs for this album. Because it was the first time I had to create some Death Metal riffs, it was not difficult to get inspired. I'm already looking forward to write some new stuff, I'm sure I could be more confident and less conventional.

Lorenzo: Joining the band only recently I tried avoiding influencing the band more than the band influenced me. This is why the basic drum part where already thought of by Gui and I then adapted them to give them some interesting twist and make it the best I could, always trying to make the guitar riffs stand out more! That’s always my main focus when creating my drum parts. What has been great though is that for this new album Gui created some different kind of riffs in regards of the previous material especially for me to be able to do some more extreme rhythms on my drum. But generally I just try to make the drum the most interesting possible without never overshadowing the guitar, the song and the band in general. With time I started understanding more and more that each instrument is to be thought of in within the band/song and not separately. That makes the drum composing a whole different universe.

I have been listening to death metal since its beginnings in the eighties and nineties, and I have always been most fascinated by darkness, pressure, energy. How do you perceive this style as a musician and what does it mean for you? Is it a lifestyle for you or just a hobby? And when did you get into death metal and what was the first impulse for you to start playing it?

Guillaume: Scream Bloody Gore was my first encounter with death metal, since that I always wanted to have a death metal band. Through the years I discovered many records, played in grind/crust and thrash bands to finally form Skelethal. It is definitely not only a hobby, it takes a lot of time and you definitely have to live what you're doing to make it sincere.

Julien : I first discovered death metal by bands like Carcass, Necrophagist, old Opeth, old Sepultura etc. At first I was really much more into heavy and thrash metal, but I think what got me go to the depths of extreme music was the search for the rawest, most authentic, primal, beautifully insane music possible. That’s also why I never limited myself in terms of styles and boundaries in music. Achieving a living out of your music when you play this kind of music is definitively not reachable at our level, so we still have a regular life as opposed to the life on the road. In my opinion it’s a never ending passion, and if opportunities to make it a real lifestyle come I would definitely get into this.

Lucas : I discovered Death Metal with Death and Morbid Angel when I was a teenager. I discovered I was a metal fan when I first heard the only band we should all listen : Iron Maiden. Then I discovered thrash and death quite quickly after and it became my favorite style of music to this day. Even if a like a lot of other stuff, I listen to heavy/thrash/death metal 90% of the time. It's really something which became a part of me, not by choice but just because it's like it's flowing through my veins !

Lorenzo: I personally think of death metal and metal in general as an entire state of mind. I think that if someone listens to metal without being entirely thrown in within its world and what there’s behind it, he cannot fully understand what it is. Metal in that sense is just the normal continuation of rock’n’roll and punk. This is why Lemmy is so loved, he represents all this fully and this is also why he loved Little Richard so much, a gay black man in the segregated USA rocking his piano and singing the hell out of his lungs. That is the state of mind we, as metal fans, represent. As Little Richard showed it, there’s no limit and no rules to art and the world itself. This is what I feel while playing metal. As a musician this is very important to me.

Thank you so much for the interview. I'm really looking forward to inserting the original CD "Unveiling the Threshold" into the player and adding volume. I wish your album a lot of success and I wish you to be satisfied in your personal lives as well. Pure SKELETHAL death metal forever!

Guillaume: Thanks a lot for everything Jakub, all the best for you too. Cheers from France!
