Interview - IRON FLESH - I would define death metal as a way to express all the faces and feeling of your own self.


Interview with death metal band from France - IRON FLESH.

Ave IRON FLESH! I haven’t found any interview in the Czech language with you, yet. So please, first introduce the band to our readers who don’t know you. You could start from the early beginnings and describe the whole IRON FLESH history. 

Hi, Julien from Iron Flesh, i have started the band in 2017 as a solo project. 

It’ s still the case but about 6 months after writing the first couple of songs for the 1st EP «Worship the necrogod» some friend of mine told me to find people to play with live . 

So a asked some friend of mine to join me to play live, that was the best idea for the band . 

A few months later, Me, Seb Sylver and Guilhem were ragging on stage ! 

In 2018 we released a second EP « Scourge of Demonic incantations» and played even more live . 

2019 we released the first album «Forged faith Bleeding» on Epictural production . 

That was the year were we played the most live ! 

Early 2020 started pretty well for us with a lot of project, then lock down happened so the new album was postponed... 

We released a live performance recorded in 2019 for free, « A Necro dead one» 

I couldn’ t think of not releasing something for the fans ... 

November 2020 still under covid and lockdown but we decided to release the new album anyway . 

«Summoning the Putrid» was released on Greatdane Records on november 27 

We cannot play it live for the moment but we are preparing some surprises don’ t worry . 

It’ s our best effort so far, the first couple of reviews are great and i am proud of those 2 last years of hard work . 

2020 is coming to an end very soon, i am already projected into 2021 and even further . 


I’m just listening to your new record „Summoning the Putrid“ and I feel like as if I am closed in some tomb together with ENTOMBED, NIHILIST, ENTRAILS, SORCERY, DISMEMBER. The record has a great dark sound. Where did you record it and how satisfied you are with it? Did you have the "last word" concerning the resulting sound? 

I have recorded all parts at «Secret place studio» with David Thiers ( sound guy of Gorod and many other studio and live experiences ) 

Seb recorded the bass as on the first album, and i got sylver as guest for a solo, Dagoth from otargos did some vocals and alex from agressor did also a solo for me . 

I am totally satisfied with the result, the recording was pretty fast but for the mix we took literally months to make it grow slowly on us and being 100% satisfied . 

David is one of those wizard guys in the studio that can make tricky things to make you sound awesome . 

He is really easy to work with . 

That collaboration was the best so far and i hope to record again with him . 

He is the perfect fit for the band ! 


How was the new material for album „Summoning the Putrid“ created? How exactly IRON FLESH writes the music? 

This is really simple, I write all the music and lyrics in the band . 

I am those kind of guy that can stay in his cave during days or even weeks to werite music . 

It’ s a strange feeling, i always write music in the afternoon and when night is coming . 

Then i don’ t i don’ t have any specific method, i jam, write riffs and try to find good structures and catchy riffs . Then i put drums, bass and leads . 

I don’ t have any limits i just try to write music with differents influences/tempos and moods, so you generally have 4 or 5 different type of songs into an Iron Flesh album . 

For the lyrics this time i was really influenced by Mark Riddick and Romero filmography . 

Riddick is an illustrator that i dream to work with, his work is full of details and inspires me a lot when it comes to lyrics, it often describe a scene, so with imagination you can link different ideas and subjects together . 

I still have my main themes around, Hp lovecraft stories, endoctrination, sorcery, demons and human race . 

I try to melt all those subject and keep a red line to follow during all the album.

 

„Summoning the Putrid“ has dark cover art. Who is an author? I really like his work. How did you actually choose the idea of the cover and what exactly illustrates? 

The author is Skadvaldu, he is an amazing artist, i have heard of him on facebook and instagram, those medias are a great source if you look for someone to make album art . 

We talked a bit on facebook, i send him preproduction work with lyrics, explained him the main «concept», he really enjoyed it . 

When i work with an artist i give him full possibilities, just the themes, i don’ t want to be too directive, generally it kills inspiration . 

He started sending me a few sketches and in a few weeks the art work was more or less done . 

I wanted the artwork to illustrate at least all the subjects/ideas i was speaking about in the lyrics . 

But then it was up to him to express his art and feelings, and we have an extremely good feedback on his work ! 

Then Ars goetia design add some colours to the artwork . 

It’ s always good to let people do the job they are good at, you cannot control everything all the time . 

They feel more united with the band like members, they are in the same boat. 


Could you reveal us who is an author of the lyrics and what is their background? Where did you take inspiration for certain topics? 

I write all the lyrics, i am inspired by Hp lovecraft, sci fi movies, religion, history, everyday life, it’s definitly a source of inspiration . 

I am not praying god or satan but if you one or an other you have to admit that they both can exist, Are we alone in the galaxy ? Who was on earth before us, what does the future will bring us ? is there life after death ? 

Many questions that can activate your imagination and inspires you for lyrics . 

You play music as old as death metal itself. How do you perceive new directions in the death metal? I mean mixing with death core or technical death metal? Do you have any favourite bands in “modern metal”? 

I don’ t think death metal is really changing, i mean technical is coming but more and more old school bands are also coming out . 

It’ s a matter of taste and mood . 

Streaming is killing CD but vynils and tapes are coming back, you have to adapt yourself . 

Then if you don’ t like a band just dont buy or listen to them, there are enough bands on earth to satisfy everyone . 

I am not into that core/tech death scene but i do give a listen to some albums and big names cause i think you can find something you like in everyband, in terms of cutlure and just being open minded . 

I really dig Spawn of possession, Archspire, Whitechapel, and more . 

They have personnality, they bring something to the table.

 

What about IRON FLESH and concerts? Do you play a lot? Are you going on tour or you are choosing only bigger festivals? And what about touring over Europe? 

I am glad you think we are somekind of «big» band but we consider ourselve pretty small, perhaps with a «pro» approach but that’ s all . 

We still play in local/small venues and even if most of us have already toured or played big festival it makes no difference for us . 

I have decided to start again from scratch i accept to be considered as opener, music and energy on stage will speak for us ! 

We have played more than 30 shows already, a few little festival, with this covid times everything is fucked up but i hope in the future that we will have some opportunities to show on big stages what we have in our guts . 

Touring Europe would be a great experience, something like a DIY tour with 10 gigs in different countries 

This is the kind of things i would like to share with my buddies, on and back stage .

Do you know and listen to some metal bands from the Czech Republic? 

I really enjoy PANDEMIA music and saw them a long time ago in France 

Hypnos, Krabathor but like most people i stick to my idols and i am not curious enough . 

Thanks to this question i went on google and checked a few more bands and realize that the scene there is bigger that i thought . 

After the interview if you have a few Gems to share with me i am open to discover new evil bands coming from Czech Republic . 


We are slowly approaching the end of the interview so I would like to ask one more philosophical question. How would you define the death metal style? What represents this music for you and why did you choose exactly this genre? 

I have discovered metal with Dismember and Cannibal Corpse on the «Master of brutality 2» tape at the age of 8 or so . 

I enjoyed more the artwork than the music at the time but i think it kind of make me remember the old time when i was living in my parents house enjoying brutal music without having to care about how to pay the bills, food . 

I discovered music with vinyls first and tapes cuase it was cheap as fuck and my father let me buy some of them everytime we went out . 

I still have them, bought a few Maiden, Metallica, ACDC. 

The melodies, voices, chorus, agressive and catchy songs . 

The fell in love with the all package and different subgenres . 

It’ s all those influences you find in Iron Flesh music now . 

I would define death metal as a way to express all the faces and feeling of your own self. 

As a song writer, your music is kind of a mirror of your emotions, and when you know really well ther person you can read between the lines and understand that the apparent simplicity of the music is not exactly that simple . 

What IRON FLESH is planning for the next few months? 

Promoting as much as possible «Summoning the Putrid» trying to play live as soon as possible. 

We have a promotional video clip we want to record, a live video, working on live stuff, rehearsing, writing new songs, the agenda is already full of exciting things to do !

Ahoj, tady Julien z IRON FLESH, kapelu jsem založil v roce 2017 jako sólový projekt. Stále to tak je, ale asi 6 měsíců po napsání několika prvních skladeb pro první EP « Worship the Necrogod » mi můj kamarád řekl, abych našel lidi, se kterými budu moci hrát naživo. Takže jsem požádal mé přátelé, aby se ke mě připojili, abychom hráli živě a to byl ten nejlepší nápad. O několik měsíců později jsme to už já, Seb Sylver a Guilhem drtili na pódiu! V roce 2018 jsme vydali druhé EP «Scourge of Demonic Incantations» a hráli jsme na živo častěji. V roce 2019 jsme vydali první album „Forged Faith Bleeding“ (Epictural Production). To byl rok, kdy jsme hráli živě nejvíc. Rok 2020 pro nás začal docela dobře, hodně projektů, jenže pak došlo k lockdownu, takže nové album bylo odloženo … Vydali jsme zdarma živák z roku 2019 « A Necro Dead One» Ani mě nenapadlo něco pro fanoušky nevydat... Listopad 2020 je stále v režimu Covidu a lockdownu, ale rozhodli jsme se přesto nové album vydat. «Summoning the Putrid» vyšlo u Greatdane Records 27. listopadu. Momentálně nemůžeme hrát naživo, ale připravujeme nějaká překvapení, nebojte se. Prvních pár recenzí je skvělých a jsem hrdý na ty poslední dva roky tvrdé práce. Rok 2020 se brzy chýlí ke konci a já už střádám plány na rok 2021 a ještě dál... 


Právě poslouchám vaši novinku „Summoning the Putrid“ a připadám si, jako bych byl zavřený v nějaké kobce spolu s ENTOMBED, NIHILIST, ENTRAILS, SORCERY, DISMEMBER. Deska má skvělý temný sound. Kde jste album nahrávali a jak jste s výsledkem spokojen? Mluvili jste nějak do výsledného zvuku? 

Nahrál jsem všechny stopy v «Secret Place Studiu» s Davidem Thiersem (zvukař GOROD). Seb nahrál basy stejně tak, jako na prvním albu, oslovil jsem Sylvera jako hosta pro sóla, Dagoth z OTARGOS nahrál nějaké vokály a Alex z AGRESSOR mi nahrál sóla. S výsledkem jsem naprosto spokojen, nahrávání probíhalo velmi rychle, ale mix nám zabral téměř měsíc, muselo to v nás uzrát, aby jsme byli 100% spokojení. David je jedním z těch kouzelníků ve studiu, kteří umí dělat složité věci, aby zněly úžasně. Je s ním opravdu snadné spolupracovat. Ta spolupráce byla zatím nejlepší a doufám, že s ním budu znovu nahrávat. Pro kapelu se perfektně hodí! 


Jakým způsobem vznikal nový materiál pro „Summoning the Putrid“? Jak vlastně tvoří/skládají IRON FLESH? 

To je vskutku jednoduché, píšu veškerou hudbu i texty. Jsem ten typ chlápka, který může zůstat ve své jeskyni několik dní nebo dokonce týdnů a skládat hudbu. Je to zvláštní pocit, vždycky skládám hudbu odpoledne a když se blíží noc. Jinak nemám žádnou konkrétní metodu, jamuju, píšu riffy a snažím se najít dobré struktury a chytlavé riffy. Pak přidám bicí, basu, kytary. Nemám žádná omezení. Pokouším se skládat hudbu s různými vlivy / tempy a náladami, takže na albu IRON FLESH najdete obvykle čtyři nebo pět různých typů skladeb. Co se týče textů, tentokrát mě opravdu ovlivnil Mark Riddick a filmografie Romera. Riddick je ilustrátor, se kterým rád spolupracuji, jeho tvorba je plná detailů a hodně mě inspiruje, pokud jde o texty, často popisují scénu, takže s představivostí můžete spojit různé myšlenky a podněty dohromady. Stále mám svá hlavní témata, příběhy HP Lovecrafta, endoktrinaci, čarodějnictví, démony a lidskou rasu. Snažím se všechny tato témata roztavit a udržovat žhavou linii, kterou následuji během celého alba. 

 

„Summoning the Putrid“ má temný obal. Kdo je pod ním podepsán? Jeho práce se mi líbí, Jak jste vůbec nápad na obal vybírali a co má znázorňovat? 

Autorem je Skadvaldu, je to úžasný umělec, doslechl jsem o něm na Facebooku a Instagramu, tato média jsou skvělým zdrojem, pokud hledáte někoho, kdo by vám vytvořil obal k albu. Trochu jsme si povídali na facebooku, poslal jsem mu předprodukční práci s texty, vysvětlil mu hlavní « koncept» a jeho to opravdu bavilo. Když pracuji s umělcem, dávám mu volnou ruku, poskytnu jen náměty, nechci být příliš direktivní, obecně to zabíjí kreativitu. Začal mi posílat několik náčrtů a za pár týdnů bylo umělecké dílo víceméně hotovo. Chtěl jsem, aby kresba ilustrovala všechny podněty / myšlenky, které jsem zmínil v textech. Ale pak už bylo na něm, aby vyjádřil své umění a pocity a my máme mimořádně dobrou zpětnou vazbu na jeho práci! Pak Ars Goetia Design přidal do kresby některé barvy. Vždy je dobré nechat lidi dělat práci, v níž jsou dobří, nemůžete neustále všechno ovládat. Cítí se pak více spjati s kapelou jako členové, jsou na stejné lodi. 


Kdo je autorem textů a o čem pojednávají? Kde pro témata berete inspiraci? 

Píšu všechny texty, jsem inspirován HP Lovecraftem, sci-fi filmy, náboženstvím, historií, každodenním životem, to je rozhodně zdroj inspirace. Nemodlím se k bohu ani k satanovi, ale pokud vy k některému z nich, tak musíte uznat, že existují oba, jsme tedy v galaxii sami? Kdo byl na zemi před námi, co nám přinese budoucnost? Existuje život po smrti? Mnoho otázek, které mohou podněcovat vaši představivost a inspirovat vás k textům. 

Hrajete muziku starou jako samotný death metal. Jak vlastně vnímáte nové směry ve smrtícím kovu. Jeho míchání s death core, případně technický death metal? Máš vůbec nějaké oblíbené kapely v „moderním metalu“? 

Nemyslím si, že se death metal opravdu mění, technika přichází, ale stále vznikají další a další old schoolové kapely. Je to otázka vkusu a nálady. Streamování zabíjí CD, ale vinyly a kazety se vracejí, musíte se přizpůsobit. Pokud se vám kapela nelíbí, tak si ji nekupujte ani ji neposlouchejte, na světě je dost kapel, které uspokojí každého. Nejsem moc do tech/core/death scény, ale poslouchám některá alba a velká jména, protože si myslím, že v každé kapele najdete něco, co se vám líbí, pokud jde o kulturu a máte otevřenou mysl. Třeba SPAWN OF POSSESSION, ARCHSPIRE, WHITECHAPEL a další. Mají osobnost, přináší něco nového. 

 

Jak jsou na tom IRON FLESH s koncerty? Hrajte hodně? Jezdíte turné nebo si vybíráte jen větší festivaly? A co turné po Evropě, neláká vás? 

Jsem rád, že si myslíš, že jsme nějaká „velká“ kapela, ale my se považujeme za docela malou kapelu jen s profesionálním přístupem, ale to je vše. Stále hrajeme na lokálních malých akcích a i přesto, že většina z nás hrála na velkých festivalech nebo byla na tour, není v tom pro nás rozdíl. Rozhodl jsem se začít znovu od nuly, přijímám to, že budu považován za předkapelu, hudba a energie na pódiu budou mluvit za nás! Odehráli jsme již více než třicet koncertů, pár malých festivalů, s touto Covidovou dobou je všechno v prdeli, ale doufám, že v budoucnu budeme mít nějaké příležitosti předvést na velkých pódiích, co v nás je. Evropské tour by byl velký zážitek, něco jako DIY turné s 10 koncerty v různých zemích. To je něco, co bych rád sdílel se svými spoluhráči.

Znáš, posloucháš nějaké kapely z České republiky? 

Hodně mě baví PANDEMIA, viděl jsem je kdysi dávno ve Francii. Hypnos, Krabathor, ale stejně jako většina lidí se držím svých idolů a dál se moc nezajímám. Díky této otázce jsem šel na Google, podíval jsem se na několik dalších kapel a uvědomil si, že tamní scéna je větší, než jsem si myslel. Pokud se po rozhovoru se mnou budeš chtít podělit o několik «pokladů », jsem připraven objevit nové kapely pocházející z České republiky. 


Blížíme se k závěru a tak bych zkusil jednu více filozofickou otázku. Jak byste definovali styl zvaný death metal? Čím pro vás tato hudba je a proč jste si vybrali právě tento styl? 

Metal jsem objevil díky DISMEMBER a CANNIBAL CORPSE na kazetě «Master Of Brutality 2» ve věku asi 8 let. V té době jsem si užíval více obaly než hudbu, ale myslím, že mě to trochu přimělo vzpomenout na staré časy, kdy jsem žil v domě svých rodičů a užíval si brutální hudbu, aniž bych se musel starat o to, jak platit účty, jídlo. Nejprve jsem objevoval hudbu prostřednictvím vinylů a kazet, které byly levné jak sviňa a můj otec mi dovolil koupit si je pokaždé, když jsme šli ven. Stále je mám, koupil jsem pár Maidenů, Metallicu, AC/DC. Melodie, hlasy, chorály, agresivní a chytlavé skladby. Zamiloval jsem si to jako celek, včetně různých podžánrů. Jsou to všechny vlivy, které nyní v hudbě IRON FLESH najdete. Death metal bych definoval jako způsob, jak vyjádřit všechny tváře a pocity svého vlastního já. Jakožto autor skladeb, je vaše hudba jakýmsi zrcadlem vašich emocí, a když znáte opravdu dobře tu osobu, můžete číst mezi řádky a pochopit, že zdánlivá jednoduchost hudby není úplně tak jednoduchá. 

Co chystají IRON FLESH v nejbližších měsících? 

Propagovat co nejvíce «Summoning the Putrid», snažit se hrát co nejdřív živě. Máme promo videoklip, který chceme nahrávat, dále živák, makat na nových věcech, zkoušet, program je plný vzrušujících věcí!

Možná jsem vykopal příliš mělký hrob. Vrátila se. S boláky po celém těle, s odpadávajícím masem od kostí. Její hlas byl skřehotavý, nasáklý špínou a plesnivinou. Lákala mě, abych šel s ní. Na druhou stranu, do země stínů. Má krásná zombie. Vyprávěla mi příběhy ze záhrobí, trávili jsme spolu spoustu nádherných chvil v márnici. Poslouchali jsme u toho novou deskou německých maniaků SLAUGHTERDAY. Otevřely se nám staré rány, vzpomínky létaly kolem jako hejno krkavců. 

Hřbitovní atmosféra, hororové nálady, ty charakterizují i novou desku "Ancient Death Triumph" nejlépe. Smutek, temnota a chlad. Mlhavé ráno na hřbitově, už bývá mráz. Zítra za tebou zase přijdu, má milá. V přehrávači budu mít celou diskografii SLAUGHTERDAY. Na to můžeš vzít jed.

 

Když poslouchám SLAUGHTERDAY, tak mám pocit, že jsem našel na půdě dávno zapomenutou krabici se starými vinyly. Zaprášené vzpomínky na poctivý metal, na počátky stylů jako death metal, doom a další (třeba i na punkové vibrace), převážně zachmuřené kapely. Pro přirovnání mě napadají třeba takoví AUTOPSY, ASPHYX, MASTER, CELTIC FROST, BLACK SABBATH. "Ancient Death Triumph" je pro mě mělkým hrobem, prašivou rakví, chladem a temnotou. Chodím rád podzimní krajinou, nahoře nad městem sleduji lidské hemžení. Oni ještě nechápou, že je jednou čeká konec. Mé kroky vždy nakonec vedou na hřbitov. Užívám si skvělý ledový zvuk, spoustu zajímavých nápadů, doma potom i obal, který jsem musel mít ihned i na tričku. Pokud stejně jako já milujete staré dobré pořádky v hudbě a jste naplno oddáni poctivému, ryzímu, upřímnému death metalu, tak je tohle album určeno přesně pro vás. V katakombách můžete stále potkat zajímavé skupiny a SLAUGHTERDAY mezi ně již dlouhodobě patří. Mám rád náladu "Ancient Death Triumph", způsob, jakým mi proniká do žil. Líbí  se mi, jak je deska napsána  a složena. Němci si mě již poněkolikáté ihned naklonili na svoji stranu a zahalili mě do černého pláště temných melodií. Vynikající album, u kterého lezou nemrtví z hrobů!

Maybe I dug a too shallow grave. She came back. With sores all over the body, with meat falling off the bones. Her voice was crackling, soaked in dirt and mould. She enticed me to go with her. On the other hand, to the land of shadows. She has beautiful zombies. She told me stories from the grave, we spent a lot of wonderful moments together in the morgue. We listened with a new record of German maniacs SLAUGHTERDAY. Old wounds opened up to us, memories flew around like a flock of ravens. 

The graveyard atmosphere, horror moods, these characterize the new album "Ancient Death Triumph" best. Sadness, darkness and coldness. Foggy morning in the cemetery, it's usually frost. I'll come to you again tomorrow, my dear. I will have the entire SLAUGHTERDAY discography on the player. You can take poison for that.


Listening to SLAUGHTERDAY, I feel like I've found a long-forgotten box of old vinyl in the attic. Dusty memories of honest metal, the beginnings of styles such as death metal, doom and others (even punk vibes), mostly gloomy bands. For comparison, such as AUTOPSY, ASPHYX, MASTER, CELTIC FROST, BLACK SABBATH come to mind. "Ancient Death Triumph" is for me a shallow grave, dusty coffin, cold and darkness. I like to walk through the autumn landscape, I watch the human bustle up above the city. They still do not understand that one day they will end. My steps always lead to the cemetery in the end. I enjoy a great icy sound, a lot of interesting ideas, then at home the cover, which I had to have immediately on my T-shirt. If you like me, you love the good old order in music and you are fully committed to honest, pure, sincere death metal, then this album is for you. In the catacombs, you can still meet interesting groups and SLAUGHTERDAY has been one of them for a long time. I like the mood of "Ancient Death Triumph", the way it penetrates my veins. I like the way the record is written and composed. The Germans immediately tilted me to their side several times and wrapped me in a black cloak of dark melodies. An excellent album in which the undead climb from the graves!

Umíráme a znovu se rodíme. Jsme jen zrnkem písku ve vesmíru a někdy nám chybí pokora. Zrovna teď mi připadá, že jsem v jakémsi mezičase. Stojím v obrovském chrámu, někde v podzemí a našlapuji tiše. Nechci narušit temnou a chladnou atmosféru. Nechci ještě odejít na druhou stranu. Stejně jako každý jsem provedl za svůj život spoustu špatných věcí, ale způsobil i mnoho úsměvů. Přiznám se, že poslední soud jsem si představoval trošku jinak. Vše je ohlodané na kost a tak pomíjivé. Můj život je najednou jen krátkým filmem, který nikoho nezajímá. Jsou ale věci, na které jsem nesmírně hrdý. Hudba, Bože i Satane, ta mě provázela pořád.

Třeba teď, když už vím, že brzy bude konec, poslouchám novou desku řeckých death metalistů SOULSKINNER. Kapelu znám již dlouho a nikdy mě nezklamala. Je dobré mít určité jistoty, záchytné body, na které je spolehnutí. Novinka "Seven Bowls of Wrath" na mě působí jako loučení se světem živých a pozvánka na onen svět. Je testamentem pravého a ryzího death metalu. 


SOULSKINNER jsou mými průvodci v podzemí a musím rovnou napsat, že jejich muzika je přesně podle mého gusta. Potkávají se v ní vlivy ASPHYX, BOLT THROWER, GOREFEST, CARCASS, AUTOPSY a dalších. Řekové na to jdou ale přeci jen trošku jinak. Dokázali předložit nejen ostré a destruktivní skladby, ale nebojí se výletů až někam k doom a black metalu. Songy v sobě mají velký kus melancholie, jsou zahaleny do mlhy, která je upletená z černých myšlenek. Mám pocit, že mě něco hlodá uvnitř. Přímo v břiše. Nějaká choroba, nemoc, nevím, ale spustí se to pokaždé, když poslouchám "Seven Bowls of Wrath". Kapela do mě otiskla své černé nálady, zavřela za mnou dveře do pekla a spolu se teď procházíme mezi stíny. Líbí se mi obal od Juanjo Castellana, který je doslova uhrančivý i mrazivý zvuk a produkce (Bill Zobolas - Recording, Mixing, Achilleas Kalantzis - Mastering). Toulám se rád a často nekonečnými chodbami hluboko pod zemí. S chutí objevuji další zkaženou, plesnivou a záhadnou hudbu. SOULSKINNER letos vydali desku, která je oparem nad čerstvě exhumovaným hrobem, vzpomínkou na bolest. Má v sobě doslova magickou přitažlivost. Mysteriózní death metal s ledem v srdci! Vynikající!


Asphyx says:

We die and we are born again. We are just a grain of sand in space and sometimes we have a lack of humility. Right now, it seems to me that I'm in a kind of time. I am standing in a huge temple, somewhere underground, treading quietly. I don't want to disturb the dark and cold atmosphere. I don't want to go to the other side yet. Like everyone, I've done a lot of bad things in my life, but I've caused also a lot of smiles. I admit that I imagined the Last Judgment a little differently. Everything is gnawed to the bone and so fleeting. My life is suddenly just a short film that nobody cares about. But there are things I am extremely proud of. Music, God and Satan, always accompanied me. 

For example, now I know it will be over soon, I'm listening to a new album by Greek death metallers SOULSKINNER. I've known the band for a long time and they never let me down. It is good to have certain certainties, clues you can rely on. The new album "Seven Bowls of Wrath" seems to me like a farewell to the world of the living and an invitation to the afterlife. It is a testament to real and pure death metal.


SOULSKINNER are my guides in the underground and I have to write straight away that their music is exactly to my taste. The influences of ASPHYX, BOLT THROWER, GOREFEST, CARCASS, AUTOPSY and others meet here. But the Greeks do it a little differently. They were able to present not only sharp and destructive songs, but they are not afraid of trips to doom and black metal. The songs have a great deal of melancholy in them, they are shrouded in a mist that is knitted from black thoughts. I feel like something is gnawing inside me. Right in the abdomen. Probabaly some disease, I don't know, but it starts every time I listen to "Seven Bowls of Wrath". The band imprinted their black moods on me, closed the door to hell behind me, and now we walk among the shadows together. I like the cover by Juanjo Castellan, which is literally enchanting and chilling sound and production (Bill Zobolas - Recording, Mixing, Achilleas Kalantzis - Mastering). I wander like and often through endless corridors deep underground. I like to discover other spoiled, mouldy and mysterious music. This year, SOULSKINNER released an album that is a haze over a freshly exhumed grave, a memory of pain. It literally has a magical appeal. Mysterious death metal with ice in the heart! Excellent!

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.? 

Hi, first of all we'd like to thank you for reviewing our debut album and for your good words. Deathcraeft was founded in 2016 and the style that mostly characterizes would be all-metal crossover, trying to borrow elements form various styles of metal. 

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering? 

The album was recorded at Infinite Loop music studio - run by our guitarist and founding member Kostas Kalampokas - and is located in Ioannina, Greece. In charge was Kostas who did all the rec. engineering and mixing. The mastering was done by Peter In de Betou in Sweden. 


How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)? 

Due to the pandemic and the situation in general - where doing concerts is out of the question - we released it in a limited number of Cds available through deathcraeft.bandcamp.com. Also, it was released digitally on all major streaming platforms (iTunes, Spotify, Amazon music etc). Our future plans include realeasing it on vinyl. 

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with? 

The lyrics were written by our guitarist Kostas who also composed all the music. It is a concept album that uses as a background for the story the Cthulhu Mythos created by writer H.P.Lovecraft, but mainly the lyrics have to do with sociopolitical issues humanity is facing throughout its existence. 


Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important? 

The logo was created by Kostas and recently we had the chance of perfecting it with the help of graphic designer Giannis Nakos from Remedy Art Design who has worked with many metal bands. The social networks are very importand nowdays to promote a band. But, it takes a lot of time because there is much stuff out there - we are still learning and hoping to get better. It is a valuable tool to communicate with the fans. 

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you? 

It is self-released because to get a good label behind you, you need to establish yourself first – draw their attention. So, we decided to self-release it and when we have our next album ready start searching for a label to represent us. 


Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration? 

We started listening to metal in the 80's so bands from that era are number one for us. These bands include Testament, Megadeth, Forbidden, Helloween, Death and in general bands that produced great music back then. 

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response? 

We send it to one or two – didn't get a response and lost interest. When a band is new we have to do the hard work ourselves and if we do it right, the labels will follow. 


How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best? 

The line-up was completed only recently and during the pandemic, so we didn't have the chance to play live yet, but we are very eager to, when things get better. 

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band? 

Just play metal music, have the chance to play in concerts and meet people who love listening to metal. Our next step is start writing the next album. I believe we will be ready to get into the studio during Spring of 2021.

Ave WORTHLESS! Greetings to the Finnish underground. I hope everything is fine with you. It should be because this year you have released a third full-length album in your band's career. I have to admit it has literally blown my mind. It is dark, energic and as if it cuts by the sharp edge of the knife. I can hear from the record you did a really good job and you added a big portion of the talent, too. How do you perceive the new album in comparison to the previous one? Where did you want to move and in what are these two records different? 

Hello! And thanks for these brilliant words. We are very satisfied to the new album. The new album include a little bit faster songs than the previous Grim Catharsis album. We think there is enough variation on the album between the songs but it also have the familiar “ Worthless stamp“ on it. There was also situation that we wanted additional vocals to the album because we had only one vocalist in the band this time. Saara Kujansuu fulfilled the sound perfectly. 


„Melancholic Rites“ includes all attributes of good death metal. For me personally, it represents the record, which I really like to listen to. How did you produce it? How look the writing process of new material in the case of WORTHLESS? 

The album was produced by the band and Panu Raatikainen. The writing process took about one year. We had almost all the material ready for the new album in the spring 2018, but we had changes in the line up and so we had to start the process all over again by us (Toni Pekkala, Petri Hartikainen) as a duo. It had a lot of work but we think we made it successfully. 

I found out that recording & mixing Panu Raatikainen and Jaakko Viitalähde mastering of the new record. I have to confirm that the sound is literally killing. It still makes me add volume to the player. Panu has created a sound that is cruel, raw and at the same time dark and organic. How went the work with him and why did you choose him? In which studio did you record it? How did the recording process look like? 

Panu was in the band as a lead guitarist earlier so we knew him well and his skills to be a producer/recorder and mixer so the choice was easy for us. Everything went very smoothly as we predicted.The album was recorded at Studio Rantajätkät ry. We have recorded all our albums there. 


An important part and a kind of extra bonus for fans today is the physical CD. You released the new album at CD through themselves, and it has a corpsy cover art. Who is the author? Do I explain well the picture when I would think it is a body in a considerable state of decay? How did you choose the motif and how does it relate to the music at the record? 

Markus “Kotta“ Kotiranta was the author and he has done all the cover-arts for our full albums. It depence by the perspective of the viewer how you see the picture, but we see it like a“ Father of Misery“ kind of thing. Hah. If you listen to the album you may see the connection between the music and the cover-art. Melancholy theme felt right for this album. 

 

I have been wandering the underground for over thirty years and I still go to Finland for music with certainty. I think we have a similar nature and taste when it comes to metal. I like your bands a lot and I monitor your scene carefully. Maybe I envy you a little, because we only have a few death metal bands that are worth it. How do you explain that death metal are doing so well in your country? How do you perceive your scene, fans, labels? 

Maybe it´s in our blood. We live mostly in darkness and coldness so it possibly have something to do with it. It´s going quite well in finnish metal scene today. Actually it has been so from early 90´s or so. However most of the finnish death metal bands have a deal with labels outside of Finland how we see it. 


You play melencholic death metal influenced by, among other things, the Swedish school. Today, the band can't avoid comparisons, but I would like to know how the idea to start WORTHLESS was born, who was and is your metal idol? Where do you want to move your band? Are you attracted to large foreign festivals, for example, are you willing to go on tour with a more famous band? 

We had a Celtic Frost tribute band before Worthless and after playing several shows with that band still we had an urge to do our own music. We starded Worthless in 2009. Metal idols a few to mention: Dismember, Wolfbrigade, Entombed, Bathory, Carcass etc. It would be nice to perform at festivals abroad some day. Of course it would be nice to do some tour. 


When I started my blog five years ago, I had a vision that I would try to support bands that are not so much popular, or they are lost in underground. To let the world knows about them. I think I'm doing quite well, at least according to the responses. How do you approach the promotion of your music? Do you rely upon the label or do you send the CDs for various reviews by yourself? For example, I buy albums that I really enjoy. What about you? Are you also fans who often support your colleagues? Do you go to concerts? 

We have a promoter Miika“Mega“ Kuusinen here in Finland who help us with promotion. We have sent our music to various labels worldwide trying to find a deal for the album but this time we didn´t got any co-operation with any label. This album is self-published. Of course we support our colleagues by buying their records and t-shirts and go to concert when it´s possible.


On the one hand, today the new band has a lot of opportunities to make themselves more known, but on the other hand, there are a huge number of groups and the fans are getting lost in this big metal sea. A lot of people just download mp3s from the internet and instead of to visit the concert they prefer to spit poisonous saliva on Facebook. How do modern technologies affect you as WORTHLESS? What do you think about downloading music, google metalists, streaming music, etc.? 

It is easier to spread your music to fans all over the world these days and we think it´s a positive thing. Small band like ours it´s probably good thing that downloading, streaming etc.is possible. 

I like to ask the musicians what death metal means to them. How would they define it, whether it is more the philosophy and lifestyle thing for them or "just" relaxation? What does it mean for you? How do you perceive and experience it? 

Death Metal means to doing good music with good friends. Music and playing with guys means relaxation, friends, good times in life in comparison with everyday life. 

Finally, a classic but important question. What is WORTHLESS planning in the upcoming months? Where can we see you at the stage and when will you visit the Czech and Slovak Republics? 

We are going live on december in Tampere Finland with our new line-up and new songs are written while we speak. It would be nice to do shows in Czech and Slovak Republics.

Každý si představujeme smrt jinak. Někdo jako postavu v kápi, jiný zase vidí příšeru, která vám od dětství leží pod postelí a čeká, až uděláte chybu. Čas utíká stále dopředu, bez kompromisů. Postupně se rozpadáme, hnijeme zaživa. Nakonec zůstane jen tělo bez duše, které čeká na dámu s kosou. Podá ti kostnatou ruku a zaskřehotá. Jsi na řadě, můj příteli. Poslední rozloučení, soud u kterého nelze nikdy vyhrát. Pamatuj, svět je nespravedlivý a dobří odcházejí jako první.

Melancholická procházka v mrazu a beznaději. Taková je druhá dlouhohrající deska finských WORTHLESS. Mrazivá, návyková. Zamkli mě do zlého snu. Chytili do sítě a pohřbili zaživa. Moje první setkání s kapelou dopadlo již od počátku na výbornou. Líbí se mi způsob, jakým Finové přistupují k death metalu. Chladně, mrazivě, temně a melodicky. Novinka je jako stvořená na noční návštěvu hřbitova.

 

Z "Melancholic Rites" je cítit inspirace melodickou švédskou death metalovou školou (EVOCATION, DESULTORY, AT THE GATES, ENTOMBED, GRAVE, DISMEMBER), ale i finskými kapelami (odkazování jsou také CELTIC FROST, HELLHAMMER, USURPER). Není to vlastně vůbec důležité, hlavní je celkový dojem a ten je vynikající. Nahrávka se poslouchá sama. Pomalu vám pronikne do žil, přenese někam na zasněžené pláně severu. WORTHLESS ctí staré death metalové kořeny, ale zároveň zní svěže a originálně. Ze skladeb na člověka doslova dýchá melancholie, je ozvěnou ve vichřici, smrští, která vás strhne do hlubin. Černá a bílá na obalu se v hudbě spojili v jedno. Dva protiklady, které se vzájemně odpuzují i přitahují. Líbí se mi sound kapely, je jako led, který vám někdo bez varování bodne do srdce. Vidím před sebou bělostné tváře mrtvých těl u cesty. Říká se, že ve vánici nesmíte usnout. WORTHLESS vás převedou na druhou stranu, proklejí a uvrhnou do temnoty. Postupně se rozpadáme, hnijeme zaživa. Nakonec zůstane jen tělo bez duše, které čeká na dámu s kosou. Než se tak stane, doporučuji poslouchat "Melancholic Rites". Má v sobě totiž něco, co ví jen samotná Smrt. Sílu temnoty, chlad z druhé strany za řekou Styx. Mrazivý death metal s odkazem z onoho světa!


Asphyx says:

We each imagine death differently. Some as a hooded figure, others see a monster that has been lying under your bed since childhood, waiting for you to make a mistake. Time is still running forward, without compromise. Gradually we fall apart, we rot alive. In the end, only a soulless body remains, waiting for the lady with the scythe. He shakes your bony hand and growls. It's your turn, my friend. The last farewell, a court in which you can never win. Remember, the world is unjust and the good go first. 

Melancholic walk in the cold and despair. Such is the second full-length record of the Finnish WORTHLESS. Frosty, addictive. They locked me in a bad dream. They were caught in a net and buried alive. My first meeting with the band turned out to be excellent from the very beginning. I like the way Finns approach death metal. Cold, freezing, dark and melodic. The novelty is perfect for a night visit to the cemetery.


"Melancholic Rites" can be inspired by the melodic Swedish death metal school (EVOCATION, DESULTORY, AT THE GATES, ENTOMBED, GRAVE, DISMEMBER), but also by Finnish bands (references are also CELTIC FROST, HELLHAMMER, USURPER). It's not important at all, the main thing is the overall impression and it's excellent. The recording listens to itself. It will slowly penetrate your veins, transfer somewhere to the snowy plains of the north. WORTHLESS honours old death metal roots, but at the same time sounds fresh and original. The songs breathe melancholy into a person, it is an echo in a storm, a whirlwind that pulls you into the depths. The black and white on the cover merged into one in the music. Two opposites that repel and attract each other. I like the sound of the band, it's like ice that someone stabs in your heart without warning. I see in front of me the white faces of dead bodies by the road. It is said that you must not fall asleep in a blizzard. WORTHLESS will take you to the other side, curse you and throw you into darkness. Gradually we fall apart, we rot alive. In the end, only a soulless body remains, waiting for the lady with the scythe. Before that happens, I recommend listening to "Melancholic Rites". He has something in him that only Death knows. The power of darkness, the cold on the other side behind the river Styx. Frosty death metal with a legacy from the other world!
