Ave DESOLATOR! I’m just listening to your new record „Sermon of Apathy“, and I feel like as if I am closed in some tomb together with DISMEMBER, NIHILIST, ENTRAILS a INTERMENT, MORGOTH, SINISTER, IMMOLATION. The record has a great sound. Where did you record it and how satisfied you are with it? Did you have the "last word" concerning the resulting sound?

Jonas: We recorded the drums at Wing Studios with Sverker Widgren. Getting a great sounding and high wuality drum recording is esential for any album to sound good so we went all out and recorded the drums in the best studio we could afford. The rest we recorded ourselves, the guitars, bass and vocals. The album was mixed and mastered by Jari Lindholm who me and Stefan has worked with before in Soliloquium with great result. So we knew he would make our album sound great. Jari is also very easy to work with and we had input and communication throughout the whole process. I think I can speak for all of us when I say we are extremely satisfied with this album.

How was the new material for album „Sermon of Apathy“ created? How exactly DESOLATOR writes the music?

Jonas: Stefan is the one who writes most of the music; the riffs, the leads etc. Then we often play around with his ideas in the rehersal space and work together on the song arrangements. The process is a little bit different from song to song but I would say it is a collaborative effort in the end because all of us have input and we try out alot of different ideas before deciding on a final version of a song.

I have lost count of how many versions we did only of the song The Great Law of The Dead before we finally felt that one was perfect and even then we still ended up making a few changes to it while recording the album.

„Sermon of Apathy“ has dark and morbid cover art. Who is an author? I really like his work. How did you actually choose the idea of the cover and what exactly illustrates?

Jonas: The cover art is made by Alex Tartsus. It was mainly Joakim’s idea inspired by an art piece by our friend Oliver Palmqvist, from the band Phidion and who does additional vocals on the album. The cover art depicts the Lovecraftian god Yog-Sothoth.

Could you reveal us who is an author of the lyrics and what is their background? Where did you take inspiration for certain topics?

Jonas: Me and Stefan write the lyrics for the songs and we split the songs between us. I tend to focus more on Lovecraftian horror and anti-religious songs. Stefan tends to write lyrics that are observations and reflections about human nature and the society we live in. Our styles match really well I think.

The core of the horror in the stories of H. P. Lovecraft is that humanity and our lives are insignificant in the large universe we inhabit. Stefans lyrics are in the same nihilistic and sometimes misanthropic style that much of what we do on a day to day basis as humans in our society is pointless and worthless so like I said our styles match and complement eachother really well.

The new album was released by Black Lion Records. This label has a very good name in the underground scene and does a very good job. However, didn't you want to release a record in some bigger label? Did you ask some other label? How you are actually satisfied with Black Lion Records?

Jonas: We had a contract for this album with Black Lion Records and they did a great job I think. They also re-released our Ep Spawn of Misanthropy as well back in 2018. We are not in this to become famous and become rockstars. If a bigger label offers us a better deal we would of course be happy for it but our main goal is getting our music out to as many people as possible and Black Lion Records has done a good job at promoting our album so far I would say.

When I look through your albums, you really made a long journey. It is obvious that you as a band are still working on yourself. How often do you rehearsal together? Are you a "hard-working" band, which practices regularly or are you more „punk“ in the rehearsal task?

Jonas: Every member of Desolator is involved in other bands as well so we do not need to rehearse as a band every week, we stay sharp and we keep evolving as musicians anyway. And now when we are unable to play concerts because of the covid-19 epidemic we do not reherse at all. But we have done this together for so many years at this point and everyone in the band is an excellent musician in their own right that knows their stuff so when we do show up for rehersal we show up prepared.

In the case of your band, it is very good to see your development, each album is better, and you are also gradually better and better musicians. Do you have some goal, which you would like to achieve? Someone wants to release an album with a large label; other wants to play on one stage with some famous band. What about you?

Jonas: For me personally a dream come true would be to play some of the larger metal festivals in Europe like Brutal Assult that you have in Czech Republic. And also of course to be able to go on tours with bands that we in Desolator are inspired by and look up to like Nile or Immolation.

Can you recommend some new albums, which impressed you at the latest time?

Jonas: For some more Lovecraftian inspired death metal you guys should check out the album The Cthulian Pulse by Puteraeon.

Do you know and listen to some metal bands from the Czech Republic?

Jonas: Yes! I have albums by Root, Cult of Fire, Master’s Hammer, Törr and Crux.

We are slowly approaching the end of the interview so I would like to ask one more philosophical question. How would you define the death metal style? What represents this music for you and why did you choose exactly this genre?

Jonas: When me, Joakim and Stefan started playing together back in 2009 the plan was to form a death/doom band but we very quickly decided to play death metal instead since that simply felt better and more fun for us. Today of course everyone in Desolator plays in some form of death/doom band as well. Joakim in Within the Fall, Victor in Hadriel and me and Stefan in Soliloquium.

As for defining death metal that is a very large question but I’ll give it a go. Death metal to me is metal turned up to 11 basically. In many ways the ultimate form of metal because it has everything from catchy riffs and beautiful melodies to mind bending technicality and ultra brutal aggression and heaviness. And of course the inhuman growl vocals are essential as well. To the uninitiated death metal sounds scary and incomprehensible but once you get it nothing can compare.

What DESOLATOR is planning for the next few months?

Jonas: Our imidiate plans are simply to survive the Covid-19 epidemic but we have stuff in the works and once the epidemic is over we cannot wait to play concerts again!

Thank you for the interview and I wish you a lot of sold CDs, hundreds of crazy fans and tons of great ideas.

Jonas: Thank you for the support!

Recenze/review - DESOLATOR - Sermon of Apathy (2020):

Ave DESOLATOR! Právě poslouchám vaši novinku „Sermon of Apathy“ a připadám si, jako bych byl zavřený v nějaké kobce spolu s DISMEMBER, NIHILIST, ENTRAILS a INTERMENT, MORGOTH, SINISTER, IMMOLATION. Deska má skvělý sound. Kde jste album nahrávali a jak jste s výsledkem spokojen? Mluvili jste nějak do výsledného zvuku?

Jonas: Nahrávali jsme bicí ve Wing Studios se Sverkerem Widgrenem. Skvěle znějící a vysoce kvalitní nahrávka bicích je nezbytná, aby každé album znělo dobře, takže jsme šli všichni do nejlepšího studia, jaké jsme si mohli dovolit. Zbytek jsme nahráli sami, kytary, basa a zpěv.

Jakým způsobem vznikal nový materiál pro „Sermon of Apathy“?

„Sermon of Apathy“ má temný morbidní obal.

Jonas: Já a Stefan píšeme texty písní a písničky jsme si rozdělili.

V roce 2018 znovu vydali náš Ep Spawn of Misanthropy.

Jonas: Ano! Mám alba od Root, Cult of Fire, Master’s Hammer, Törr a Crux.

Joakim hraje v Within the Fall, Victor v Hadriel a já a Stefan v Soliloquium.

Recenze/review - PLAGUEMACE - Primal Priest (2020)

PLAGUEMACE - Primal Priest
EP 2020, vlastní vydání

for english please scroll down

Asphyx says:

Closed in a dark room we are eating each other. We are like animals, trapped long in a cage left only with the last remnants of evil instincts. Fear mixed with madness. Really slim, prayed with swollen mouth at least for a bit of light. We walk through the skulls of our predecessors. Convicted to death by hunger and exhaustion. Buried alive, chained by chains of our disgusting acts. When will the redemption come?

On the album "Primal Priest" I like everything. Swedish sound, grind passage, crust dancing, cover, vocals and ideas. Typical old school death metal melodies meet with such a tough cut that I like in metal so much. It is like a massacre in the morgue. It is like meeting a killer in a strait jacket which has just managed to get out. He will catch you, chain you to the wall and then make the bloodiest rituals on you. I have similar feelings about this album. It is nothing new although the album is easy to listen, it is properly rotten, insidious and painful. And that is what we do in the underground. I might never get out of my cell, but if there were similar albums, dying would be easier. Devastating pure death metal from the catacombs! Absolut dusty album!

A few questions - interview with death metal band from Denmark - PLAGUEMACE.

A few questions - interview with death metal band from Denmark - PLAGUEMACE.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

We are a 5 man death metal band from Denmark. The band was formed in the fall of 2019 in a dirty old basement. We play hard hitting death metal, with loads of grooves, dirty riffs and thrashy drums. The sound and feel is very much in the vein of scandinavian death metal bands sich as Entombed, Dismember etc.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

We recorded the EP in Aarhus in FinlandStudio. In charge of recording, Mixing and mastering was Andreas Linnemann. An amazing producer who managed to hit the sound we were looking for.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

So far the only medium is digital, but both CD's and vinyls are in production and should be ready by the end of the year. We release 150 Black vinyls and a yellow schwirl version strictly limited to 100 copies. In addition to this we release 500 CD's as soon as they arrive.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

The lyrics were entirely written by our lead singer (Andreas). He has a wicked mind when it comes to writing lyrics so we just let him do his thing. The majority of the lyrics on the EP are about the lies and crumbling facade of the church. He also writes about good ol' gore and has some foul and graphic imagery in his lyrics.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

We really wanted the logo to include a mace so we hit up our friend David Hernan, who is a tattoo artist, and he made the logo. In addition to that we have worked with Paolo Girardi, who does some insanely cool paintings and he did the cover art for the EP. We have also had Warhead Art design some sick things for us, for instance the plaguedoctor we used for our single 'Plagueface'.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

We have no label. We have done everything ourselves, but we would love to be on a label in the near future.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

We undoubtly idiolise Suffocation, which in our opinion is the greatest band ever.

We also love High On Fire and I guess they to some extent have inspired our music. Otherwise we are inspired by bands such as Grave, Entombed, Obituary, Carcass etc.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

Actually we didn't yet. As mentioned earlier we will soon be looking for a label.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

Due to fucking Corona virus we have only played a few gigs. We are trying our hardest to get gigs but people are very cautious about planning shows in these uncertain times. That being said, we do have something brewing with two other danish bands.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

We just wanna get out there and play a ton of shows, and we have some milestones we have set for the future wich are getting to play on a tour here in Denmark, play at Brutal Assault, Wacken and other big festivals and at som point to be able to make a living playing music.

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

Through our Instagram page Plaguemace_official and on our FB page Plaguemace.

If you send a message on one of these social media accounts we usually answer within 12 hours. On our instagram profiler you can also find everyone's personal profiles, names and who plays what. And you can also order merch by sending us a message on social media.

Recenze/review - GAMA BOMB - Sea Savage (2020)

GAMA BOMB - Sea Savage
CD 2020, Prosthetic Records

for english please scroll down

Mám jít do pekla a neotravovat? Dobře, tak já jdu radši pryč, abych nedostal do huby. Tady to je dneska samej drsnej chlápek.

Každou chvíli mi chodí na recenze nějaký thrash metal. Všichni pořád proti něčemu bojují. Proti vládě, proti plastům, masu, cukru, mužům i ženám, proti všemu. Netvrdil bych vám to, kdybych si to nepamatoval.

Pokud máte fantazii, máte rádi ryzí a opravdový thrash a heavy metal, buďte vítáni.

Asphyx says:

Hey sailor, don't you have some rum? Don't be greedy and share. You don't have not enough, sea wolf? Ok. Have it your way... and what about some music? What did you listen to at sea while collecting tons of garbage from pigs that called themselves people? New GAMA BOMB? No way, I'm getting there to. Hey, what's in the dimension of the island where Bud Spencer and Terence Hill are still doing their things? What? I should go to hell and not bother you? Okay, so I'd better go away otherwise you punch me in the mouth. Everybody is a tough guy today.

Every single while I receive some trash metal to review. Everyone is still fighting against something. Against the government, against plastics, meat, sugar, men and women, against everything. It is often forgotten that this style used to be fun as well. I wouldn't tell you this if I didn't remember. I'm having a lot of fun with "Sea Savage". Exaggeration, jokes, but also great fresh and interesting music. I don't know how these gentlemen do it, but they long been one of my favourite bands in the genre.

Trackers and simulators will label "Sea Savage" as music full of references to bands such as JUDAS PRIEST, ACCEPT, KING DIAMOND, MOTORHEAD, IRON MAIDEN, OVERKILL and many more. It doesn't matter anyway, the main thing is that I feel like dancing. Okay I don't know how so I try to dance as a drunken sailor only who has only began to disregard this entire and rotten world and the only thing that remains is to make fun of it. Like the sound of the record (Zack Ohren), I love the poisonous vocals and I wish to have King Kong from the cover on my T-shirt, but most importantly - I'm smiling, even after a long time spent together. The album offers a lot of interesting moments and when I say interesting I mean really great ones. The recording is a bit of a spit in the face of all today's posers, modern google facebook fans, there is a revolt, rebellion, but also a huge portion of fun. I am not even talking about being humble, which is a virtue which many of the clowns lack today. All this is built on solid musical foundations. GAMA BOMB is even better this year than last time, they are like a bunch of high sailors who have been at sea for a long time and have come to have a lot of fun. If you have imagination, you like pure and real thrash and heavy metal, you are welcome. The first league is played here. Goddammit, can anyone pour me some rum? Yeah, and by the way, thumbs up for Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. I loved them as a child and I love them to this day! Okay, so I'll put it bluntly. This is the best thrash metal record of the year! There you go I've done it!

DEATHSPAWN - Reverendus

Inferno!

Asphyx says:

Sometimes, as I walk through the world beyond, I see a black mist in front of me. The faces of the undead appear in it, shrouded in a bloody haze. I look for death in music and sometimes it peeks at me from corners where I wouldn't really expect it. I discovered the Polish band called DEATHSPAWN during one of my wanderings through the afterlife. I played the first song and knew right away that this was real and unadulterated death metal, played by musicians who firmly believe in what they do. I have to say at the beginning that "Reverendus" is a very colorful album.

This is the first product of the band, but it can easily compete with the best that was created in this style this year. Poles can be cruel, cruel, insidious, but they also don't forget cold and raw melodies. They managed to mix a really deadly cocktail, which should be tasted by everyone who likes long trips in the afterlife with turns to hell.

"Reverendus" lives somewhere between American and Polish death metal school. The songs are really well thought out, very well written, have clear structures and the riffs literally get under your skin. But it's not just the guitars. I also like the drums, which are clear, painful and uncompromising, there's no need to discuss the vocals, it's powerful and insidious, reminiscent of an ancient beast that has just woken up and longs for blood. A lot of bands can do that but sometimes it just not enough, but DEATHSPAWN offer an excellent sound and production and it is clear that all experienced musicians stake their lives on it. In addition, Polish maniacs added a deadly foggy atmosphere to it as well. Encounters with the undead are a bonus while listening. I like when songs can awaken my imagination, emotions, grab me by the throat, suffocate, step on my chest with a chained shoe and smash my head against the wall. DEATHSPAWN can do all this and they do it great. "Reverendus" goes down very well, it is a piece of roughly chopped darkness that settles in your veins. It will get inside you and you will always be happy to return to it. The band managed to find the perfect balance between brutality, cold and darkness. Inferno!

A few questions - interview with death metal band from Poland - DEATHSPAWN.

A few questions - interview with death metal band from Poland - DEATHSPAWN.

Answered Bartosz, thank you!

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Ave! Deathspawn was formed on the ruins of a death metal band named Resurrection, from Słupsk (North of Poland). We wanted to refresh the band’s concept a little. The change of style isn’t revolutionary, it’s still brutal, it's still technical, it’s still death metal but maybe somewhat more serious in the lyrical layer and with some black metal influences.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

Raw tracks have been recorded at home or in the rehearsal room by ourselves, and then they were edited/reamped in a professional studio. We chose Monroe Sound Studio because we already knew them. Arkadiusz “Aro” Jabłoński was responsible for all of the mixes and mastering and we don’t regret it. We had a couple of talks about the vibe we’d like to get and he completely understood our idea. We are very satisfied with the effect we got.

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

The album will be released in a CD form, in the number of 500, and digital. CD release hasn’t happened yet because of some technical problems with the printing house, but we hope that it will be available this month. Of course you can also buy a digital version on Bandcamp.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

I am the author of most of the lyrics, excluding ‚Reverendus‘, ‚Rage of Pariah‘ and ‚Traitors Will Pray‘. The first two were written by my dear friend, Artur Stępnik and the last one was done by our guitarist, Roman Brzeziński. We often work together with Artur, discussing some philosophical concepts and such. For instance he wrote the lyrics for the title track based on my reflections on “The Rebel” by A. Camus. Speaking of it, “Essais” of Camus are a very important part of the album’s concept so the lyrics usually deal with the problems of absurdity of life, the role of death in it and the solitude of an individual. Other sources of inspiration connected to these problems are the works of Dostoevsky, Bulgakov and Schopenhauer. The lyrics are also about religion and it’s potential to enslave people.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The logo, the album’s cover art and the booklet are done by Eyes Of The North, a.k.a. my brother, Tomasz :) The cover art for the single track Grace of Purpose is a work of mine.

We don’t have a regular band’s website yet, although we’ve started to think about creating one. Of course we run the FB fanpage, BC site and YT channel. At this moment, I am responsible for the preparation and upload of all materials (announcements, trailers, videos), but we always discuss together the content we want to share. Do I consider these things important? I would say that in the era of computers, smartphones etc. I am aware of the meaning and importance of social media for the promotion of the band. It’s great that people around the globe can hear your music immediately, especially when they really look for it and want to support us or at least give an opinion (either good or bad, as long as it is constructive). However, I wouldn’t like to spend all my days checking how many of them liked my recent post. We have to focus on the work we have and playing some new cool riffs.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

The album is released by Defense Records and Mythrone Promotion labels. We of course did reach out to few or more labels. Some of them didn’t respond at all, some of them did but weren’t interested or didn’t have time for us. Finally, we got brilliant feedback from Defense Records and they offered us fair terms when it comes to a fledgling band like ours. They also work with Mythrone Promotion which takes care of reviews, zines and other “old school” types of promotion. So far, we are very happy to work with these guys and hope it will get even better.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

That’s a tough one… Of course, I can’t deny that the music I listen to from day to day affects my work in some way. The overall sound, guitar and drum playing techniques, emotions and reflections… all those things are kinda written into one’s subconsciousness and that’s a fact. Thinking of it this way, I would say that bands like Nile, Behemoth, Hate, Decapitated, Morbid Angel, Immolation, Suffocation, Septicflesh, Hour of Penance and many other bands like those are our “idols”. Nevertheless, when sitting with a guitar and trying to write a riff we try to think about “the things we generally like in music”. For example, “Reverendus” has a couple of groovy parts and we feel great with this kind of riffing. Also there is definitely a strong “egyptian/Nile-like” element in our music as well as moments of total destruction, blast beats and strong growling. Finally, the inspiration may come from anywhere and death/black metal isn’t of course the only genre that we listen to.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

I think that in some way I answered this question already. Maybe I could add that we contacted mostly Polish underground labels because we wanted to start the whole thing “in our playground”. We don’t expect that bigger labels would be interested in releasing a debut album of a new death metal band that has no history yet.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

As I mentioned, we are quite a young band so we didn’t have a chance so far to play many gigs. That’s also because after changing the band’s name we were already working on the recordings so we were focused on this process and after that, in early 2020, COVID came up and there was no way to organise any events. Nevertheless, in September 2019 we played 3 shows in Słupsk, Poznań and Grudziądz. In Słupsk we had a pleasure to play before Calm Hatchery and it was great, but if I had to choose our best performance, then it would be the gig in Grudziądz. There came about 80-90 people and the place was quite small so the energy (and the smell too, haha!) undeniably was there. We never played at a festival so I can’t compare it to playing in a club. Of course we’d like to do both but we love playing in small and closed places where you can actually “feel” the crowd.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

Although we are focused now on the promotion of “Reverendus” in social media, which I hope we’ll be able to play live in 2021, we are already working on some new ideas. I can’t say any specific details about it yet just because it’s too early and of course because the debut album deserves a proper promotion but surely we do not want to waste the time so we bust our asses after working hours at home writing, discussing new concepts and looking for inspiration. What we would like to achieve is definitely to play many gigs in the future. At the starting point, as many as our regular jobs let us do, and then… I don’t know… we’ll see.

How and where can your fans contact you? Can you provide some contact information?

The best way to contact us is via e-mail at contact.deathspawn@gmail.com. So far we’re not so big, so we also still have a control over the messages on Facebook.

Thanx for the interview.

Thank you very much. Cheers!

Recenze/review - CORROSIVE - ED (2020)

CORROSIVE - ED
CD 2020, Kernkraftritter Records

Pálí a žhnou.

Masakr!

Asphyx says:

He was a friend, a close friend, a father, and a man he could count on. He had a lot of hobbies and it was a lot of fun. Nobody knew what he was doing at night. He had a small cellar in the woods, in a picturesque place. He kidnapped young girls and did things with them that you don't even want to see in horror movies. You like to be scared, you love tension, but here it was a monster with a pretty face. A beast that knew no mercy.

It is similar to the music of German veterans CORROSIVE. Even this year, on their new record, they bring songs that will dig into your stomach like a sharp knife. They burn and glow. They are the essence of classic and honest death metal. The legacy of the raw wounds on the execution site is the cellar, where the cries of the victims slowly fade away.

An already brutal cover will lead you into an unclean game. "ED" is a very raw album. With good sound, with lots of dark and cool ideas. Riffs as cut from old death metal textbooks, the atmosphere of absolute death. Autopsies tell similar stories. Stylishly, CORROSIVE can be placed side by side OBITUARY, CARCASS, BOLT THROWER, VOMITORY. But the Germans do not forget the melodies, which in turn evoke European Nordic bands (EVOCATION, HYPOCRISY). The whole is then a very believable cocktail, after which you will writhe in painful cramps. No prayers will help you. You will become another victim in a row. You will experience first-hand the old mouldy cellar in the woods, which will become your own grave. The songs have only one goal, to destroy you, to tear them to pieces. It must be said that the band is doing very well. You will find a lot of interesting moments on the novelty, it will become your shadow. I am aware of your bad thoughts. CORROSIVE is brutal in a very captivating way. They are like old butchers sawing their craft in the evenings in forbidden slaughterhouses. "ED" is the definition of pure death metal. Massacre!
