Jdu temnou chodbou dolů, do podzemí. Po stěnách stéká hnis, vzduch je těžký a smrdí rozkládajícím se masem. V kostech se mi již dávno usadil chlad. Našlapuji opatrně a pod nohama mi křupají zbytky kostí. Konečně dojdu k rezavé bráně. Je lehce pootevřena. Vstupuji dovnitř a ztrácím se v nekonečném podsvětí. Poslouchám u toho debutové album německých doom death metalistů DISCOURAGED. Přišli za mnou mí vlastní démoni, kývají spokojeně hlavou a já nemohu jinak, než s nimi souhlasit. Tohle je hudba, která již dlouhé roky koluje i v našich žilách.

Poslouchat tuhle nahrávku je jako se procházet ranní krvavou mlhou na hřbitově, jako trávit dlouhé hodiny v márnici nebo na pohřebišti, na kterém byli kdysi pohřbíváni prokletí. Němci ctí všechna psaná i nepsaná pravidla stylu a i když jej nikam neposouvají, tak jejich nové album není jen obyčejným dobře odvedeným řemeslem. Skladby mají v sobě spoustu dobrých nápadů, zajímavých pasáží i neodbytného smutku, který mě pokaždé při nočním poslechu popadne.

Jako starý pes, který se již několik dekád přehrabuje v prašivých albech a pouští si do svého playlistu už jen kapely, které doopravdy zaujmou, vám mohu novinku těchto tmářů jenom doporučit. Společná setkání byla vždy spíše záhrobním rituálem pro vyvolávání temných sil, než jen obyčejnou nahrávkou. Je něco morbidně přitažlivého, jakási starodávná patina, poctivost a autenticita, kterou v sobě tato hudba má. Pánové se sice volně inspirovali ve starých archívech a v jejich tvorbě naleznete zřetelné odkazy na kapely jako KATATONIA, ANATHEMA, PARADISE LOST a další, kteří umí smíchat tmu s chladem, ale také kus srdce. Alespoň tak vnímám "A Farewell in Stages" já. Ráno už bývá zima a podzim o sobě začíná dávat vědět. Některé stromy lehce zežloutly a ranní cesty do práce již bývají provázeny chladem. Novinka mi hraje do kroku a najednou nejsem ve svém městě, ale hluboko v podzemí, mezi nemrtvými. Rozmlouvám s nimi, tančíme dlouhé tance do rytmu a odpadává nám maso od kostí. Díváme se do tmy, platíme převozníkovi tímto albem, on jej přijímá a skřehotavě se usmívá. Houpáme se na zpěněných vlnách řeky smrti, vstupujeme na druhou stranu a novinka je nám k tomu mrazivým soundtrackem. DISCOURAGED sice vydali letos první album své kariéry, ale je znát, že je to kapela složená ze samých zkušených muzikantů, kteří moc dobře vědí, co a jak chtějí hrát. Album má navíc velmi dobrý zvuk, produkci i motiv na obalu. Pokud jsi fanoušek tohoto stylu, můj milý příteli, potom neváhej ani chvilku. Hraje se zde i pro tebe. Mrazivé, temné, pochmurné doom death metalové album, které vás převede do země nekonečných stínů! Rozpadnete se v prach!

I walk down a dark corridor, into the underground. Pus runs down the walls; the air is heavy and reeks of rotting flesh. A chill has long since settled in my bones. I tread carefully, and the remains of bones crunch beneath my feet. Finally, I reach a rusty gate. It’s slightly ajar. I step inside and lose myself in the endless underworld. As I do so, I listen to the debut album by the German doom death metal band DISCOURAGED. My own demons have come to me; they nod their heads contentedly, and I can’t help but agree with them. This is music that has been coursing through our veins for many years.

Listening to this record is like walking through the bloody morning fog in a cemetery, like spending long hours in a morgue or at a burial ground where the damned were once laid to rest. The Germans honor all the written and unwritten rules of the genre, and even though they don’t push its boundaries, their new album is more than just a well-crafted piece of work. The songs are full of great ideas, interesting passages, and an inescapable sadness that always grips me whenever I listen to them at night.

As an old dog who’s been rummaging through dusty albums for decades and now only adds bands that truly grab my attention to my playlist, I can’t help but recommend this new release from these dark artists. Their collaborative sessions have always been more of an otherworldly ritual for summoning dark forces than just an ordinary recording. There’s something morbidly alluring about this music a sort of ancient patina, sincerity, and authenticity that it possesses. The guys drew loose inspiration from old archives, and in their work you’ll find clear references to bands like KATATONIA, ANATHEMA, PARADISE LOST, and others who know how to blend darkness with coldness, but also with a piece of their heart. At least, that’s how I perceive “A Farewell in Stages”. Mornings are already getting cold, and autumn is starting to make its presence felt. Some trees have turned slightly yellow, and the morning commute to work is already accompanied by a chill. The new album plays in time with my steps, and suddenly I’m not in my city anymore, but deep underground, among the undead. I converse with them; we dance long dances to the rhythm, and our flesh falls from our bones. We gaze into the darkness, pay the ferryman with this album, and he accepts it with a hoarse chuckle. We rock back and forth on the foaming waves of the river of death, step onto the other side, and this new release serves as our chilling soundtrack. Although DISCOURAGED released their first album this year, it’s clear that this is a band made up entirely of experienced musicians who know exactly what and how they want to play. The album also boasts excellent sound, production, and cover art. If you’re a fan of this style, my dear friend, then don’t hesitate for a moment. This album is for you, too. A chilling, dark, and gloomy doom death metal album that will transport you to a land of endless shadows! You’ll crumble to dust!
