Jen tak si zajít na pivo, vyčistit si mozek od myšlenek běžného dne. To bylo mým cílem v sobotu odpoledne a večer. Byl jsem doma sám. Děti měly své aktivity a manželka jela za příbuznými. A jestli pak víte, co udělá chlápek v mém věku? Půjde za děvkama? Ožere se do němoty? Ale kdeže, čte si. To jsem dopadl, co? Jenže všichni stárneme a spousta mých kamarádů zlenivěla. Mladí chodí hromadně na něco úplně jiného než na metal a tak jsem byl zvědavý na návštěvnost. Pokaždé, když jdu do tohoto klubu, tak se pomalu vracím ve vzpomínkách do dob svých vysokoškolských studií, kdy jsem býval na koleji jedním z mála, kdo poslouchal metal. Bože, Satane, to je ale let. Nezbytností jsou menší rozplavby, tentokrát U Švejka u náměstí v Plzni. Těším se, už když jedu tramvají a pokec se jako vždy vydaří.
Chodíval jsem tenkrát, na konci devadesátých let, také do klubu Parlament. Hrával se zde tvrdý rock a metal a mám s tímto místem spojeno spoustu akcí a zážitků. Je moc dobře, že se pokračuje alespoň ve sklepě. Pěkné to tu je, říkám si, když sestupuji po schodech dolů. Na boku mám stále nový foťák, se kterým se ještě učím. Minule jsem třeba na HYPNOS vyfotil málo fotek, protože jsem si blbec opilej nesundal krytku. Ale co, dneska stejně fotí každej druhej, minimálně na mobil. Ono vůbec došlo k devalvaci jak obrázků, tak psaného textu. Většině lidí stačí (a jiné to už nebude) status na jedné z mnoha sociálních sítí. Nicméně, já už to nějak doklepu postaru. Jdou na mě z té víkendové samoty, na kterou nejsem moc zvyklý, trošku chmury, ale to trvá jen chvilku. Je podzim, počasí jest sychravé, neveselé. Mě ale pořád hřeje srdce ukované ze surového železa. Když dneska někde pronesu metal, pyčo, tak se na mě všichni dívají úkosem. Pán v letech a takové řeči, řekla mi tuhle jedna paní v práci na obědě.
Zde jsem ale mezi svými. Staré i nové tváře, uvidíme, jestli tu dnes bude někdo známý a když ne, tak metal a pivo vždycky spojovalo lidi. Pořád tomu, i když už asi trošku naivně, věřím. Klub jsem již chválil, ale musím znovu. Je vidět, že zde pracují srdcaři. Dám hodně na atmosféru, na pohodu, přišel jsem si odpočinout, poslechnout staré veterány a pročistit si hlavu. Znáte to, to je samá práce, rodina, stereotyp. Připíjím do tmy všem, kteří už nejsou mezi námi a čekám na první kapelu.
FLESHLESS - nikdy mě nepřestane fascinovat ta proměna, kterou pánové vždycky projdou, když vylezou na pódium. V civilu byste je obejmuli a jsou samé úsměvy, ale jakmile hrábnou do strun, tak je to parta zabijáků. Hrálo se divoce, surově, brutálně. Kombinace death metalu a grindcore, jistota, za roky vybroušená prezentace, která ale zároveň působila přirozeně. Přiznávám, souhlasím se všemi body obhajoby, mám pro tuhle smečku slabost. Opět to bylo nahrubo nasekané, pitevně zvrácené, morbidně poetické a hlavně, totálně zničující. Dámy a pánové, byl jsem navýsost spokojen. Mozek mi sice málem vyskočil z hlavy a vnitřnosti málem vytekly na podlahu, ale bylo to jako vždy totálně zabijácké! Amen!
I never cease to be fascinated by the transformation that these gentlemen always undergo when they climb onto the stage. In civilian life, you would hug them and they are all smiles, but as soon as they strum their strings, they become a bunch of killers. They played wildly, rawly, brutally. A combination of death metal and grindcore, confidence, a presentation honed over the years, but at the same time natural. I admit, I agree with all the points of defense, I have a soft spot for this pack. Once again, it was roughly chopped, autopsy-like, morbidly poetic, and above all, totally devastating. Ladies and gentlemen, I was extremely satisfied. My brain almost jumped out of my head and my insides almost spilled out onto the floor, but as always, it was totally killer! Amen!
S.D.I. - Reinhard Kruse by s klidem mohl i dnes vyhrát cenu jednoho z nejsympatičtějších a nejvysmátějších aktérů metalové scény. Kapela se před lety vrátila a bývá u nás v Čechách poměrně častým hostem. Nedivím se, pamatuji dobu, kdy jsme řvávali jejich skladby cestou z hospody. A nebývalo nás rozhodně málo. V Plzni pánové odvedli skvělou práci. Chtěná nostalgie po starých dobrých časech, kterých jsem byl součástí, samozřejmě zafungovala ve velké míře. Ale i tak, vystoupení mělo drive, potřebnou energii, takový ten fuck off efekt, který jsem měl na těchto šílencích vždycky tolik rád. Možná bych dokonce řekl, že na mě hudba fungovala v malém klubu více, než na velkém pódiu. Ostré riffy a notoricky známé melodie zněly jako božský (ďábelský) chór. Na téhle smečce jsem vyrostl a navždy bude patřit ke zlatému fondu mé diskografie. Připadal jsem si zase jednou jako by mi bylo šestnáct. Kurva brácho, bylo to opět skvělý, díky moc za to!
Reinhard Kruse could easily win the award for one of the most likable and cheerful figures on the metal scene today. The band returned years ago and is a relatively frequent guest here in the Czech Republic. I'm not surprised, as I remember the days when we used to sing their songs on the way home from the pub. And there were definitely a lot of us. The guys did a great job in Pilsen. The desired nostalgia for the good old days, which I was a part of, obviously worked to a large extent. But even so, the performance had drive, the necessary energy, that fuck-off effect that I always loved so much about these madmen. I would even say that the music worked better for me in a small club than on a big stage. The sharp riffs and notorious melodies sounded like a divine (devilish) choir. I grew up on this pack and it will forever belong to the golden fund of my discography. Once again, I felt like I was sixteen. Fuck, bro, it was great again, thanks a lot for that!
Organizace v pořádku, zvuk a pivo také. Klub byl zcela zaplněn.
Původně jsem si chtěl jen tak vyrazit, popít si, odpočinout, vyčistit hlavu. Všechno se mi povedlo a ještě jsem si odnášel, jako bonus navíc, krásný hudební zážitek. Parádní a osvěžující bylo, že jsem nemusel nikam cestovat, táhnout se jak smrad před půl republiky. Tohle je pro mě underground, zde jsem cítil takovou tu pradávnou sílu a sounáležitost. Přemýšlím o tom, když jdu domů. Osprchuji se, natáhnu na záda a chvíli si přehrávám v hlavě všechno, co jsem zažil. Kdo nebyl, může jen litovat a kdo ano, tak určitě má slova potvrdí. Bylo to moc fajn, do svého imaginárního archívu jsem si uložil další sérii vzpomínek, které budu vytahovat opravdu rád. Moc vám děkuji za pozornost, za těch pár milých slov, co jste se mnou prohodili a budu se těšit příště. Megamosh!

Když jsem byl malý kluk, tak mě neustále strašili s tím, že naši zemi napadnou zlí lidé. Hodí na nás jaderné bomby, pustí mezi nás chemické látky, které nám rozežerou obličeje i duši. Zemřeme v krutých křečích. Nacvičovali jsme obranu, pochodovali v plynových maskách a báli se sirén. Smutné je, že se toho zase tolik od mého mládí nezměnilo. Pořád se chřestí se zbraněmi, stále se umírá na bojištích. Neštve vás to někdy? Mě ano a hodně. Potřebuji si čím dál častěji vyčistit hlavu.
Na slovenské ABORTION je spolehnutí. Ve zprávách umírají další lidé. Jdu domů a vyzvednu si jejich nové kompilační album. Jedná se o skladby z let 2010 až 2015, splitka, různé bonusy i živé záznamy. Album vložím do svého přehrávače, zapnu play a přemýšlím nad tím, kde vlastně máme protiatomový kryt. Nebo se z nás stane jenom další z otisků na zdi? Tohle je starý, prašivý, surový grindcore přesně podle mého gusta. Pomalu přidávám hlasitost a alespoň na chvilku zapomínám na všechen ten marast, který v dnešní společnosti je. Díky za to!
Z reproduktorů ke mě stéká takový ten zkažený hnis, s prašivým zvukem, s nápady, které vám vystřelí mozek z hlavy. Žádné zbytečnosti, tohle je přímý útok na solar plexus a také povinnost pro všechny opravdové fanoušky kapely (kupujte! - dole pod článkem je odkaz). Na ABORTION se mi vždycky líbilo, že mají svůj jasný a zřetelný rukopis, výraz, ksicht chcete-li. Jedou si svojí cestou a zůstává po nich hluboká krvavá stopa. Jedná se o veterány scény, kteří ale ani po všech těch letech v podzemí a na pódiích neztratili na síle, tlaku a energii. Navíc, kompilace je velmi dobře poskládaná, album se poslouchá tak nějak samo, přirozeně. Chtělo by to pivo, malý klub a garantuji vám, že stojím v první řadě a nasávám atmosféru. Tohle jsou skladby, které nejvíc vyniknou v mosh-pitu. Jsou totiž syrově návykové, ohlodané na kost. Navíc, vždycky jsem měl rád kapely, které nejen, že mají talent, ale také příliš neprožívají samy sebe. "The Past Awaits You" je zkrátka a dobře přesně tím druhem alba, které na sebe aplikuji hlavně v případech, kdy mě štve všechno kolem. Úlisné lži politiků, nesmyslné války v různých koncích světa, kněží, kteří omlouvají zvěrstva, kterých je schopen jenom člověk. Jsem starý pes, který již zvedá hlavu jen v případě, že jej nějaká hudba opravdu zaujme. Píšu jen o tom, o čem chci. Tihle slovenští maniaci budou mít u mě vždy dveře otevřené. Pořád mám totiž chuť občas bouchnout do stolu, rozsekat sekyrou všechny obrazovky světa, stále rád cítím tlak a energii, která v hudbě je. Jsme jedné krve, já i tahle smečka. Potvrzením budiž pár mých dnešních skromných slov, ale hlavně to, že až přijdu domů, tak si album znovu pustím. Je totiž pro mě také určitým svědectvím, mementem, osobní záležitostí. Doporučuji vám si otevřít pivo, otočit volume úplně doprava a uslyšíte sami. Grindcore death metalové album, které přežije i jadernou katastrofu! Kompilace ohlodaná až na kost!

You can always count on Slovakian band ABORTION. More people are dying in the news. I go home and pick up their new compilation album. It features songs from 2010 to 2015, a split, various bonuses, and live recordings. I put the album in my player, press play, and wonder where our fallout shelter is. Or will we just become another mark on the wall? This is old, raw grindcore, exactly to my taste. I slowly turn up the volume and, at least for a moment, forget about all the mess that is today's society. Thanks for that!
The speakers spew forth rotten pus, with a mangy sound and ideas that will blow your mind. No nonsense, this is a direct attack on the solar plexus and also a must for all true fans of the band (buy it! - there is a link below the article). What I've always liked about ABORTION is that they have their own clear and distinct style, expression, face, if you will. They go their own way and leave a deep bloody trail behind them. They are veterans of the scene, but even after all these years in the underground and on stage, they have lost none of their power, pressure, and energy. What's more, the compilation is very well put together, the album just kind of plays itself, naturally. All you need is a beer and a small club, and I guarantee you I'll be standing in the front row soaking up the atmosphere. These are songs that stand out best in a mosh pit. They are raw, addictive, stripped down to the bone. Plus, I've always liked bands that not only have talent, but also don't take themselves too seriously. "The Past Awaits You" is simply the kind of album I listen to when everything around me is getting on my nerves. The insincere lies of politicians, senseless wars in various parts of the world, priests who excuse atrocities that only humans are capable of. I'm an old dog who only raises his head when some music really catches my attention. I only write about what I want to write about. These Slovak maniacs will always have an open door with me. I still feel like banging on the table sometimes, smashing all the screens in the world with an axe, I still like to feel the pressure and energy that is in music. We are of the same blood, me and this pack. Confirmation of this can be found in my few modest words today, but mainly in the fact that when I get home, I will play the album again. For me, it is also a kind of testimony, a memento, a personal matter. I recommend you open a beer, turn the volume all the way up, and hear for yourself. A grindcore death metal album that will survive even a nuclear disaster! A compilation gnawed down to the bone!

Kolikrát za týden v sobě dusíte vztek? Nechutný šéf v práci, soused, co se neumí chovat, k tomu úlisné ksichty politiků, zprávy plné bolesti a utrpení. Pohár přetekl a vy utíkáte do lesů, do klidu. Nebo si pouštíte hudbu, která vám dokáže propláchnout mozek kyselinou. Rakouské maniaky DISTASTE jsem viděl letos v lednu u nás ve městě v klubu a rozsekali mě na malé kousky. Byl to velký tlak, který připomínal divoké tsunami. Kombinace brutálního death metalu, grindore, hudebního násilí a tmy, mi udělala tak dobře, že jsem se začal na novou letošní nahrávku opravdu od srdce těšit.
A jsem spokojený! Řvu do tmy fuck you, když přijdu v pátek z práce, zahlcen tunami nepotřebných informací. Sám uprostřed davu, je to stejné, jako když jsem byl mladý kluk. Jinakost se stále neodpouští, lidé jsou zatíženi nekonečnými konvencemi a předsudky. V téhle hudbě je velké množství tlaku, síly a nakumulovaného zdravého vzteku. Kurva, brácho, je to fakt dobrý!
"Agoniepositur" je velmi nakažlivým albem plným zajímavých momentů. Nenudím se ani chvilku, pořád se něco děje. Drsné melodie plné krutosti, lehká disonance, přesnost a preciznost. Takto bych definoval novinku, kdybych ji představoval někomu, kdo je touto hudbou nepolíbený. Chodil jsem šedými ulicemi průmyslového města se sluchátky na uších a kráčel v davu do nelidských továren. Vedle v hale spí tiché stroje na zabíjení. Pokaždé, když jsem šel okolo, tak jsem měl pocit, že se díky této nahrávce probudily. Jakoby z jednotlivých riffů, motivů, odkapávala zkažená krev. Přesně, to je ono, dívali jste se někdy na čerstvě proříznutý vřed? Na temnou tekutinu, smradlavou a hnusnou, která vytékala ven? Tak tahle deska je jako rezavý nůž, kterým vřed proříznete. Je to zkrátka masakr, velmi dobře a chytře napsaný a složený. Nikde nic nepřebývá ani nechybí. Zvuk je masivní, surový, motiv na obalu stylový. Rakušané na to jdou ostře, nekompromisně, útočí přímo na solar plexus. DISTASTE jsou letos ve velmi dobré formě a připomínají smečku prašivých psů, které potkáte na periferii města. Máte dvě možnosti. Buď zbaběle utéct nebo si nechat prokousnout hrdlo. Hádejte, jakou možnost jsem zvolil já? Jasně, nechal jsem se roztrhat na kusy. Představte si obrovský mlýn na lidské maso. Na lopatkách jsou připevněné čerstvě nabroušené čepele. Padám po zádech dolů a nechávám se tímto albem rozemlít na prach. Jsou mi vyrvány vnitřnosti a konečně cítím ve své duši klid. How many times a week do you suppress your anger? A nasty boss at work, a neighbor who doesn't know how to behave, the smarmy faces of politicians, news full of pain and suffering. The cup runs over and you run away to the woods, to peace and quiet. Or you play music that can flush your brain with acid. I saw the Austrian maniacs DISTASTE in our town club this January, and they blew me away. It was intense pressure, reminiscent of a wild tsunami. The combination of brutal death metal, grindcore, musical violence, and darkness did me so much good that I started to really look forward to this year's new album.
And I'm satisfied! I yell "fuck you" into the darkness when I come home from work on Friday, overwhelmed by tons of useless information. Alone in the middle of the crowd, it's the same as when I was a young boy. Otherness is still not forgiven, people are burdened by endless conventions and prejudices. There is a lot of pressure, power, and accumulated healthy anger in this music. Fuck, bro, it's really good!
"Agoniepositur" is a highly infectious album full of interesting moments. I'm never bored for a second; there's always something going on. Harsh melodies full of cruelty, slight dissonance, accuracy, and precision. That's how I would describe this new release if I were introducing it to someone unfamiliar with this kind of music. I walked through the gray streets of an industrial city with headphones on, walking in a crowd to inhuman factories. Quiet killing machines sleep in the hall next door. Every time I walked by, I felt like they woke up thanks to this recording. It was as if rotten blood was dripping from the individual riffs and motifs. Exactly, that's it. Have you ever looked at a freshly cut ulcer? At the dark, smelly, disgusting fluid that oozed out? Well, this album is like a rusty knife cutting through the ulcer. It's simply a massacre, very well and cleverly written and composed. Nothing is superfluous or missing. The sound is massive, raw, the cover art stylish. The Austrians go at it hard, uncompromisingly, attacking straight at the solar plexus. DISTASTE are in very good form this year, reminiscent of a pack of mangy dogs you might encounter on the outskirts of town. You have two options. Either run away cowardly or let them bite your throat. Guess which option I chose? Sure, I let them tear me to pieces. Imagine a huge human meat grinder. Freshly sharpened blades are attached to the blades. I fall backwards and let this album grind me into dust. My insides are torn out and I finally feel peace in my soul. Ave FROM THE CRYPT! Greetings to the Dutch underground. Let's get straight to the point. You have a new album out, "Born in the Grave," which is literally packed with honest, dirty death metal. How did the album come about and how do you feel about it? How has FROM THE CRYPT moved on since the demo?
Comparing the new songs to the demo tracks there's definitely progress. The new songs are a bit more challenging without losing the band's vibe and sound and they still do justice to the old-school death metal we represent. The drums were recorded in the studio while the guitars and vocals were recorded by ourselves so you could say it was a partly DIY process.
I'm listening to the album right now and I have to say that this time it took me a while to get into it. I put the album in my player and listen to it in my car. I really like the sound. It's lively, organic, old school, and at the same time easy to understand. Where did you record it and who is responsible for the sound?
For us it was important that the album had a raw sound. Many records these days are overproduced and unnatural. We use tube amps, not digital equipment and we didn't use drum samples either. We recorded the way we sound live giving the listener an honest impression of the band. We recorded most of it at Overdose Audio in the Netherlands where everything was ultimately mixed. The album was mastered by Audiosiege in the US. Rawskullrecordz released the album including three early demo tracks on CD and In To It Records released it on cassette tape.
I think you'll agree with me that the cover sells. You've really done a great job with it this year. Who is the author? How did you get together with the author and what exactly is the motif supposed to express in relation to the music?
I really appreciate this question. Yes artwork sells. You can have great music but if your cover is something everyone ignores in the record store it's useless. Unfortunately we're seeing a trend where A.i. covers are slowly taking over. Just like our honest sound we also felt it was important to have an honest cover that matches the record. We searched for artists with a sinister dark vibe. We ultimately approached Adam Burke of Nightjar Illustration. Adam creates hand painted artwork that immediately resonated with us. We were particularly drawn to the color scheme and the inclusion of a big-ass skull in the design that completed the picture for us.
I keep listening to "Born in the Grave" over and over again, and I think what I like most about the album is that hard-to-describe old school death metal feeling. It seems we're cut from the same cloth. Who was and is your role model? Every musician started out somehow, and there are role models who shaped their style. What were yours?
There are so many and it will be different for each band member. As for the style I've developed as a guitar player I admire Allan West (ex. Obituary) and Steve Swanson (ex. Six Feet Under). When it comes to drummers there are only two for me. Dave Lombardo and Nick Barker but perhaps other bandmembers will mention Chris Reifert (Autopsy). Chris Barnes is the ultimate frontman for me. Early days of Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under stand out.
What do you think about the current trend, widespread mainly among young bands, where they try to play as technically as possible, often incorporating saxophones and various keyboards into death metal, and generally seeking a very complicated approach? Do you enjoy such bands? For example, when I go to a concert and someone like that is performing, I'm confused. It seems like an exercise in jazz school, but in the end, I don't remember anything. What about you and current trends in death metal?
For us it's all about vibe and groove. No we don't have unfollowable guitar solos, no we don't play 240+ bpm riffs but what makes From the Crypt stand out is its accessibility. You can see at our live shows that people seeing us for the first time easily pick it up. They klick with the band. It's accessible and catchy so the riffs stick and it's almost impossible not to move. We also have bands like Cryptopsy, Immolation and Dying Fetus in our own music collection but I can imagine a first live experience can be confusing if you don't own the album. We keep it simple.
Let's go back to the beginning... What was the initial impulse that led you to form a band? And why death metal? It's not exactly a style that would bring you great "fame." Please walk us through the history of your band.
I think this style has always been like a silent killer within us in a positive sense of the word. In the '90s metal was practically dying. You saw bigger metal bands start making more mainstream oriented music. Then you saw the rise of Nu Metal and a genre like Goregrind was a big hit. When you reach a certain age you go back to basics which is Death Metal for us. The love never went away but it was temporarily put on the back burner. In 2022 this fire has been rekindled and it's wonderful to see that this scene is still alive and that what we do is appreciated.
You come from the Netherlands and play extreme death metal. Our readers would certainly be interested to know how the death metal scene works in your country. To tell you the truth, lately I've been hearing only great bands from you. Does that mean that the scene is currently very strong in your country? What about concerts, how many people go?
I can honestly say that we're spoiled in the Netherlands when it comes to venues. If you want you can go to a show several times a week. There's a distinction between bar shows for up to 100 people, club shows for up to 1.000 people, one day indoor festivals for up to 800 people and multi day outdoor festivals for up to 5.000 people per day. And right there is the problem. There's so much to do that you have to make choices especially considering the prices of these venues have risen considerably in recent years. We already have a great Dutch legacy with Asphyx, Gorefest, Sinister, and Pestilence but it's great to see new bands like Deadspeak and Bloodcrypt taking over the torch. I do see that Slam, Metalcore and anything Post-black/metal related is very popular with the younger crowd.
Your music shows that you are influenced by both the American death metal school and old European bands. How about you as fans? Do you prefer the original death metal of the nineties, or do you also draw inspiration from new albums? If so, I would be interested to know which bands had/have the greatest influence on FROM THE CRYPT.
If you listen to our music you'll undeniably hear influences from pioneers like Obituary, Six Feet Under, and Bolt Thrower. It's all about the groove and catchy riffs with these bands. What's different I think are the slow blunt parts we use which are comparable of bands like Mortician and even Crowbar. It's great to see a kind of new wave of Death Metal emerging in recent years with bands like Gatecreeper, Creeping Death, and Frozen Soul which definitely inspire us as well.
We are approaching the end, and I always ask a slightly philosophical question. How would you define death metal and what does it mean to you? I don't mean the technique of playing, but rather what it brings you, what it takes away, how you perceive it in relation to fans. Did you grow up with it?
Okay, then you'll get a philosophical answer back ;). The heart is pure and clean and from there comes the love and passion for this music. We believe it's important that our music triggers and ignites something in ourselves and in others. In the past when we where young other bands have triggered that in us when we went to a live performance. This is what we want to share with others.
What does FROM THE CRYPT have planned for the coming months? If you want to say something to fans, labels, promoters, or just have something on your mind, here's your chance...
On November 29th we'll be playing a “BORN IN THE GRAVE” release show at our hown town. It's not about us as individuals but about having a great time with the people around us and other bands. In early 2026 we'll hit the studio so we can release new music for you in late 2026 / early 2027. Ave FROM THE CRYPT! Zdravím do nizozemského undergroundu. Pojďme rovnou k tomu nejdůležitějšímu. Máte venku novou desku „Born in the Grave“, která je doslova narvaná poctivým, prašivým death metalem. Jak album vznikalo a jaký z něj máš pocit? Jakým směrem se FROM THE CRYPT posunuli od demonahrávky?
Když porovnám nové skladby s demo nahrávkami, je jasně vidět pokrok. Nové skladby jsou trochu náročnější, ale neztrácejí atmosféru a zvuk kapely a stále dělají čest oldschoolovému death metalu, který reprezentujeme. Bicí jsme nahrávali ve studiu, zatímco kytary a vokály jsme nahrávali sami, takže se dá říct, že to byl částečně DIY proces.
Právě desku poslouchám a musím napsat, že tentokrát mi chvilku trvalo, než mi pronikla do krve. Narval jsem si album do přehrávače, poslouchám ji v autě. Hodně se mi líbí zvuk. Je živý, organický, old schoolový a zároveň dobře čitelný. Kde jste nahrávali a kdo je pod zvukem podepsán?
Pro nás bylo důležité, aby album mělo syrový zvuk. Mnoho nahrávek je dnes přehnaně produkovaných a nepřirozených. Používáme lampové zesilovače, ne digitální vybavení, a nepoužili jsme ani bicí samply. Nahrávali jsme tak, jak zníme naživo, aby posluchači získali upřímný dojem o kapele. Většinu jsme nahráli v Overdose Audio v Nizozemsku, kde bylo také vše finálně smícháno. Album bylo masterováno v Audiosiege v USA. Rawskullrecordz vydalo album včetně tří raných demo skladeb na CD a In To It Records ho vydalo na kazetě.
Asi se mnou budeš souhlasit, že obal prodává. Vy jej máte letos opravdu povedený. Kdo je jeho autorem? Jak jste se dali s autorem dohromady a co přesně má motiv vyjadřovat ve vztahu k hudbě?
Tuto otázku opravdu oceňuji. Ano, obal prodává. Můžete mít skvělou hudbu, ale pokud je váš obal něco, co všichni v obchodě s deskami ignorují, je to k ničemu. Bohužel vidíme trend, kdy obaly vytvořené umělou inteligencí pomalu převládají. Stejně jako náš upřímný zvuk jsme také cítili, že je důležité mít upřímný obal, který odpovídá desce. Hledali jsme umělce s temnou atmosférou. Nakonec jsme oslovili Adama Burkeho z Nightjar Illustration. Adam vytváří ručně malovaná umělecká díla, která nás okamžitě oslovila. Zejména nás zaujal barevný styl a zařazení velké lebky do designu, která pro nás obrázek dotvořila.
Dávám si „Born in the Grave“ znovu a znovu do hlavy a říkám si, že nejvíc se mi na albu líbí asi takový ten těžko popsatelný old school death metalový feeling. Vypadá to, že jsme stejné krve. Kdo byl a je vlastně vaším vzorem? Každý muzikant nějak začínal, existují vzory, které formovaly jeho rukopis. Jaké byly ty vaše?
Je jich tolik a pro každého člena kapely to bude jiné. Pokud jde o styl, který jsem si jako kytarista vyvinul, obdivuji Allana Westa (ex. Obituary) a Steva Swansona (ex. Six Feet Under). Co se týče bubeníků, pro mě jsou jen dva. Dave Lombardo a Nick Barker, ale ostatní členové kapely možná zmíní Chrise Reiferta (Autopsy). Chris Barnes je pro mě ultimátní frontman. Vynikají raná období Cannibal Corpse a Six Feet Under.
Jak se díváš na současný trend, rozšířený převážně mezi mladými kapelami, kdy se snaží hrát co nejvíc technicky, často do death metalu vkládají třeba saxofon, různé klávesy a vůbec hledají cestu hodně komplikovaným způsobem. Baví tě takové kapely? Já třeba když někdy přijdu na koncert a někdo podobný tam vystupuje, tak jsem zmatený. Přijde mi to jako cvičení v jazzové škole, ale nakonec si vůbec nic nepamatuji. Co vy a současné trendy v death metalu?
Pro nás je nejdůležitější atmosféra a groove. Ne, nemáme nesledovatelné kytarová sóla, ne, nehrajeme riffy s více než 240 bpm, ale to, co From the Crypt odlišuje, je jeho přístupnost. Na našich živých koncertech můžete vidět, že lidé, kteří nás vidí poprvé, to snadno pochopí. S kapelou si rozumějí. Je to přístupné a chytlavé, takže riffy ulpívají a je téměř nemožné se nehýbat. V naší hudební sbírce máme také kapely jako Cryptopsy, Immolation a Dying Fetus, ale dokážu si představit, že první živý zážitek může být matoucí, pokud nemáte album. Držíme se jednoduchosti.
Když se ještě podíváme do začátku…Co bylo vlastně tím prvním impulsem, že jste dali dohromady kapelu? A proč zrovna death metal? Není to zrovna styl, který by vám získal velkou „slávu“. Proveď nás prosím historií vaší kapely.
Myslím, že tento styl byl vždycky v pozitivním smyslu slova tichým zabijákem v nás. V 90. letech metal prakticky umíral. Viděli jste, jak větší metalové kapely začaly dělat hudbu více orientovanou na mainstream. Pak jste viděli vzestup nu metalu a žánr jako goregrind byl velkým hitem. Když dosáhnete určitého věku, vrátíte se k základům, což je pro nás death metal. Láska nikdy nezmizela, ale byla dočasně odsunuta na druhou kolej. V roce 2022 se tento oheň znovu rozhořel a je úžasné vidět, že tato scéna je stále živá a že to, co děláme, je oceňováno.
Pocházíte z Holandska a hrajete extrémní death metal. Naše čtenáře by určitě zajímalo, jak u vás funguje death metalová scéna? Abych pravdu řekl, tak poslední dobou od vás slyším jen samé skvělé smečky. Znamená to, že je u vás v současnosti scéna hodně silná? Co třeba koncerty, kolik chodí lidí?
Mohu upřímně říci, že v Nizozemsku jsme, co se týče koncertních sálů, rozmazlení. Pokud chcete, můžete jít na koncert několikrát týdně. Rozlišujeme mezi koncerty v barech pro maximálně 100 lidí, koncerty v klubech pro maximálně 1 000 lidí, jednodenními indoorovými festivaly pro maximálně 800 lidí a vícedenními outdoorovými festivaly pro maximálně 5 000 lidí denně. A právě v tom je problém. Je toho tolik, že si musíte vybírat, zejména s ohledem na to, že ceny těchto koncertních sálů v posledních letech značně vzrostly. Máme již skvělé nizozemské dědictví v podobě kapel Asphyx, Gorefest, Sinister a Pestilence, ale je skvělé vidět, jak štafetu přebírají nové kapely jako Deadspeak a Bloodcrypt. Vidím, že slam, metalcore a vše, co souvisí s post-black/metalem, je u mladšího publika velmi populární.
Z vaší hudby je cítit, že jste ovlivněni jak americkou death metalovou školou, tak i starými evropskými kapelami. Jak jste na tom jako fanoušci? Máte radši původní death metal devadesátých let nebo čerpáte inspiraci i z nových desek? Pokud ano, zajímalo by mě, které smečky měly/mají na FROM THE CRYPT největší vliv.
Když posloucháte naši hudbu, nepochybně uslyšíte vlivy průkopníků jako Obituary, Six Feet Under a Bolt Thrower. U těchto kapel jde především o groove a chytlavé riffy. Rozdíl je podle mě v pomalých, tupých pasážích, které používáme a které jsou srovnatelné s kapelami jako Mortician nebo dokonce Crowbar. Je skvělé vidět, jak se v posledních letech objevuje nová vlna death metalu s kapelami jako Gatecreeper, Creeping Death a Frozen Soul, které nás rozhodně také inspirují.
Blížíme se k závěru a to vždycky dávám lehce filozofickou otázku. Jak bys definoval death metal a co pro tebe znamená? Nemyslím tím teď techniku hraní, ale spíše co ti přináší, bere, jak jej vnímáš ve vztahu k fanouškům. Vyrostl jsi na něm?
Dobře, tak dostaneš filozofickou odpověď ;). Srdce je čisté a ryzí a odtud pramení láska a vášeň pro tuto hudbu. Věříme, že je důležité, aby naše hudba vyvolávala a rozněcovala něco v nás i v ostatních. V minulosti, když jsme byli mladí, to v nás vyvolávaly jiné kapely, když jsme chodili na jejich koncerty. To je to, co chceme sdílet s ostatními.
Co chystají FROM THE CRYPT v nejbližších měsících? Pokud chceš něco vzkázat fanouškům, labelům, promotérům nebo máš jenom něco na srdci, tak zde je prostor…
29. listopadu budeme hrát koncert k vydání alba „BORN IN THE GRAVE“ v našem rodném městě. Nejde o nás jako jednotlivce, ale o to, abychom si užili skvělý čas s lidmi kolem nás a dalšími kapelami. Na začátku roku 2026 se vydáme do studia, abychom vám mohli na konci roku 2026 / začátku roku 2027 představit novou hudbu. Ave CYTOTOXIN! Greetings to Chemnitz, Germany. I hope the radiation situation is normal there. It should be, although it's true that your new album "Biographyte" blew me away again so much that while listening to it, I felt like I was right inside a nuclear power plant. Death from radiation must always be terrible. This year, you returned with a new album after five years. Why did it take so long? I was really looking forward to it, and I was rewarded with another recording that literally kills with uranium. How did the album come about, and what has the response been like? How do the new songs work live?
Glück auf, my friend! Many thanks for the super kind words! Some things take a bit longer – especially when you want them to be as good as possible! We wanted to take all the time we need to make each song shine. We experimented a lot and did things differently on purpose – from vocals, production processes and additional layering tracks. And this can be quite a long process. We also toured a lot in the past years and we have our private lives. But the results matters and we are super happy how Biographyte came out and got great feedback from supporters all over the world! The live songs go very well, currently we have Hope Terminator, Biographyte and Condemnesia in the set!
Every time I see someone wearing a gas mask, I get a strange feeling. I remember elementary school in socialist Czechoslovakia, when we had to wear them during civil defense drills. The teachers released tear gas and we marched. I felt exactly the same way when I first saw the cover of the new album, "Biographyte." The author is German Latorres (who also did the covers for NUCLEAR and MALEVOLENT CREATION, among others). How did you get together, why him, and what exactly is the cover motif supposed to express in connection with the music and lyrics?
The uneasy feeling is entirely understandable. These masks have their own unique characteristics, exuding a certain sense of consistent menace, which fits the band's theme quite well. Of course, there's also an inevitable association with war due to the history of these masks, which also fits the setting well, as the liquidators in Chernobyl in particular had to fight against radiation as an omnipresent invisible enemy. If the cover of the new album triggers this kind of unease, then it also speaks volumes about the qualities of German, who has brilliantly implemented the concept. We've known him for a very long time. Our first encounter was at one of our concerts, and since then we've maintained a close contact and have always kept an eye on his artistic work. That's how he came up with some designs for our merchandise. Once we had developed the concept for the new album, we involved him in the project relatively early on and worked long and hard on the artwork. Essentially, the album artwork depicts a liquidator forced to carry the reactor on his back. This is meant to be a metaphor, meaning that these liquidators must bear this burden on behalf of humanity. Furthermore, buildings are chained to this titan with the reactor, leaving them as uninhabitable ruins that cannot be discarded. The setting is inspired by the video game "God of War," in which the Titan Kronos is condemned to crawl through the desert carrying Pandora's temple on his back. Fittingly, Pandora's box contains what humanity is denied: hope. Thus, our Titan is symbol, metaphor, and bearer of hope all in one.
Speaking of lyrics... What exactly are they about on the new album? You are generally inspired by the horror of what happened in Chernobyl, nuclear danger, nuclear war. Who writes the lyrics? Do you draw information from books or movies?
Grimo writes the lyrics. They're usually quite long at first, but then refined and rattled together with Fonzo ;-). The new album offers a lyrical tour of Chernobyl, a journey to significant buildings, intersections of the past, or eventful locations. We also tried to create perspectives from multiple time levels. Therefore, the narrative of the scene takes place partly from the here and now of the past, but also from the current situation today. This tension led us to describe not only the decay of atoms but also of space and time in the exclusion zone. Both types of decay cause energy to be released, both kinetically and artistically. The sources of information are very diverse. For this album, in addition to lyrical fragments from survivors, the HBO Chernobyl series, documentary footage, and eyewitness accounts from forays into the zone. We also sought personal exchanges to create the most authentic picture possible "on the ground."
Readers would probably not forgive me if I forgot to ask about the band's history. Chemnitz used to be in the socialist bloc. What were your beginnings like, how did you get together as a band, and why brutal death metal?
Fonzo and our first drummer actually studied together at the same university in Chemnitz. Rehearsels took place in a small attic in some kind of youth center and it was more of a blackend death metal project. Only a few months later when Grimo joined the band it transformed into brutal slam death metal and from there it was only a short way until Cytotoxin found their sound. I guess it was some kind of masculine obsession. As you probably know young men try to test their limits and it felt only natural to us to play as fast but also as heavy as possible. It was just all about what would be the most fun music to play.
I've been to Chemnitz several times. Now only as a tourist, but a long time ago, after the revolution, when socialism fell, your city was my first foreign concert visit. At that time, we went with a group of friends to see my beloved TANKARD. We got terribly drunk, I don't remember much, but I know I threw up in some beautiful park. Maybe even in a fountain. What was it like for you in terms of metal in the nineties and what is it like today? Are there any events? Do fans go to concerts? I remember that back then it was in some cultural center...
I hope the fountain has recovered from this accident hehe. Chemnitz itself is a very old city in terms of population, and is characterized by beautiful old buildings. Here and there, Soviet architecture still shines through, which brings with it a certain charm. Generally speaking, it's a city where it's good to live, in my opinion. In terms of concerts, to be honest, things are a bit thin. Some clubs from the post-reunification era no longer exist and there's simply no target audience for events of this kind. When it comes to metal concerts, fans transfer to the town and travel from the surrounding area. Perhaps that will change again someday, but fundamentally, the brutal death scene in Chemnitz is somehow in the process of renaturalization.
What about you as a musician? Which band got you into music? Who inspired you the most? I mean as a musician now? Do you have any classical music education? What about your first concert, your first performance on stage? Tell me, exaggerate...
We all have different influences and roots but I’m sure we can all agree on bands like Necrophagist, Beneath the Massacre, Dying Fetus or Origin. And these are the bands you might rediscover here and there in Cytotoxin’s songs!
Fonzo and Jason have a more or less classical background.
Jason is more inspired by progressive music and started out with piano as a child and later learned guitar self-taught. His first concert was In Extremo at Schlachthof Dresden. The first show was probably at high school with a metalcore band.
Fonzo was all about Hard Rock like ACDC in his first musical steps on guitar in the young age of 14. Only later when he was 16 years old he discovered bands like Machine Head or Children of Bodom he was amazed by what can be done on a guitar. From there it only got faster, heavier and harder over the years. First metal concert must have been the Unholy Alliance Tour with Slayer, Lamb of God, Children Of Bodom and In Flames... man what a package!
Let's get back to the new album. I really like the sound on it. It's massive, raw, but cold and dark at the same time. Where and how did you record it, who is credited with the mastering and mixing?
Thank you so much, happy to hear that! We recorded the guitars at home and partially in the studio. Same for the bass actually! This time, we decided to record vocals in our rehearsal room. This was mainly driven by the lack of time we had previously in the studio. Imagine, we usually just had 4 days to track vocals for the past albums. This time, we wanted to have more time and experiment a bit more. And I think you can hear that! We recorded the drums again at Kohlekeller Studios. But the mixing and mastering wasn’t done by Kristian „Kohle“, but by Mendel – ex-guitarist of Aborted. If you know his solo project you can tell that he is a pro when it comes to modern production, heavy guitar sounds and orchestration. And this is exactly what we wanted with the album.
I've seen CYTOTOXIN several times at festivals in the Czech Republic, and I've also met you in smaller clubs. What do concerts mean to you? Do you enjoy playing live? And what do you think of Czech fans? I think they really like you here. After all, I'm one of them.
It’s always a pleasure to play in Czech Republic. It’s safe to say that our Czech supporters are the greatest party animals which makes these shows always fun and recognizible. Concerts of course mean a lot to us. And it doesn’t matter if it’s Brutal Assault, Melodka in Brno, Rock Cafe in Prague or a smaller club inbetween. We love the energy that the crowd gives, to see people dancing and moshing. It feels like people are very much enjoying our shows – and the well crafted beer!
When I read some books about Chernobyl and saw the famous series on Netflix, what fascinated me most was the Russians' inhumanity, which continues to this day. How they didn't care how many people would die, how many crazy decisions they made. And then how they lied about everything, how they let thousands of people die. Without help. I don't want to get into politics, I don't like it, but how do you perceive the current situation in Chernobyl? And at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. Do you think that we, as humanity, are a little closer to nuclear war again?
We are very much worried about the war in Ukraine and it feels unreal to see acts of war again in Europe. We were deeply shocked when we heard about the attacks on the power plants. I think, we can all agree that these fights need to stop immediately. Other than that we agree with you that we stay away from politics as good as we can.
You have been dealing with the nuclear threat for 15 years. Still, are you ready if something happens? As a small child, I was constantly scared by rockets, that the Americans would attack us and destroy us. We were supposed to take raincoats and plastic bags for our feet and hands. And run to the shelter? Hey, could you really do that? When I see footage of a war that is a few thousand kilometers away from us, it makes me feel pretty bad.
I’m not sure if you can really be ready if something tragic like this would happen. Of yourse, we sincerely hope that people are reasonable and responsible enough to stop fighting or even drop bombs on people again like they did in Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
Let's move away from serious topics. I'm curious what music and playing in a band means to you. Is it a hobby, a lifestyle? What has music (brutal death metal) given you and what has it taken away? You can approach this question from a philosophical point of view.
That’s a great question! For all of us, music has always been an integral part and I know that it has always been our childhood dream to play our instrument in front of crowds and be able to make a living out of it. We all still have jobs besides music and that’s totally fine. So, I would say it’s a hobby – but quite an intense one! Nearly each minute of our free time is dedicated to music, our instrument and the band. Music gives us energy, music enabled us to travel the world, meet our idols, make so many friends and supporters in the most distant corners of the world – and that’s amazing. But you also pay the price for this: you will miss many things! You are away from friends and family, it’s challenging for relationships because you got to skip many events because you are on the road. Also, everyone of us has to sacrifice the holidays to be able to join tours!
Do you have any dreams with the band? Any goals you would still like to achieve? Are you interested in a big festival or label?
We for sure would like to go back to the the US and Canada. But there are also so many other countries we would like to visit with the band. We get many comments from people to play in this or that country and we would love to exactly do that. So reach out to your local promoter and make them get in touch with us! When it comes to Festival, we would be honored to play Hellfest or Wacken one day. When it comes to labels, we currently try to survive without one and do things on our own. But who knows, maybe we want to team up with a label again in the future!
