A few questions - interview with death metal/crust punk band from Sweden - WORLD IN RUINS.

Answered Martin and Marcus, thank you!

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

MD: The band consists of me (Marcus Dahl) on lead guitar, Martin on the drums, Mathias on 2nd guitar, Daniel on bass and Fredrik on vocals.

ME: We started off in 2017 with the intension to play D-Beat/crust blended with some death metal. These are styles of music that we all like and can relate to both lyric wise and music wise.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

ME: The conditions wasn’t the best but we pulled it through. I had a severe back problem at the time and couldn’t feel my right foot when playing the drums and Mathias (git) was burnt out from working too much but as i said we pulled it through and are quite pleased with the result.

MD: Most of it was recorded at Studio Fredman and then some at my and Martins home studios after which everything was mixed and mastered by Fredrik Nordström at Studio Fredman.


How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

ME: I’m not sure but i think that it’s a small first edition. About 100 copies made of the CD and maybe 50 of the tapes. So it’s released on CD, Tape and digital. There’s no vinyl made yet but if there is someone out there willing to release it on vinyl you are more than welcome.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

MD:Most lyrics are done by Martin and then some by Fredrik and a few by me. The lyrics are social aware dealing with topics such as religion, abuse, terrorism and other sorts of pain and misery.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

MD:If I remember right it was Daniel who found the font and then we jointly did some fine tuning.

ME:The cover art for the album is made by Mike Fisher custom artwork whom we used for me and Marcus other band Sickrecy but the general graphics on both CD and Tape was taken care of by Achilles at URBAN NOISE productions.


Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

ME: We teamed up with the small DIY label URBAN NOISE Productions. Achilles, who runs the label is a friend of mine and he wrote to me and asked if he could release it, and since we parted with our previous label we all thought that this was a very good solution.

MD:This is a very small label with limited funds but he works hard (and we too) to spread our music and name and we are very satisfied with everything so far. The best thing with being on a small label is that communication is much easier and direct, which we really appreciate as opposed to being band number 242 on some bigger label that takes ages to respond (no names).

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

MD: I wouldn't say idolize but considering the style we play I would say the inspiration comes from both old punk like Discharge and Anti-Cimex as well as death metal like Morbid Angel. The first Wolfpack album is a huge inspiration as well although I think we quickly found our own way of combining those styles.

ME: i don’t know if i idolize any band but good dose of inspiration for me comes from the crust scene in general but i can tell you one thing, if Wolfbrigade hasn’t been around and showed the world that you can do it with a fat, good and modern sound, I don’t think that we would be around. They managed to take the music from the mid 80’s and do it with the sound of today. But the single most inspirational thing for me is, knowing that the best songs are still to be made and that is what i’m chasing after.


Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

ME: When we were finished with the recording we passed it around to see what interest it would gain. There were a couple of labels interested and we even signed (a bum deal) with one. We got promised a lot but nothing happened, so after a year we decided to part with them.

MD:The idea then was to release the album as three digital ep’s but along came Achilles and URBAN NOISE and the rest is history. We are very pleased that it’s finally released.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

ME: In 2019 we were on the roll, well rehearsed and on the go. We played a handful of gigs in late 2019 and early 2020 but as you all know by now that little thing called Covid-19 came along and annihilated all plans for gigs and shows. As for me i think that the last show we did was our best and most fun. It was in a small club in Kristianstad, a town in the south of Sweden. We shared the stage with 3 other relatively unknown band but the crowd was wild and the the other bands were great.

MD: I would have to agree the last show in Kristianstad is the best so far as we were all well rehearsed and pulled off a good show.


What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

ME: To promote the album the best that we can and to try and get some more gigs going. That means that we have to assemble the band and drag our arses to rehearsal place more often. You see, we all live in different parts of the country so naturally we don’t rehearse that much together. Hopefully we will be back in the studio by the end of 2022 to record a new album and this time we aim for a vinyl release as well.

MD: Now that the whole album is finally out main goal, unless the Covid situation results in lockdowns again, is to get out and play, thats really what I look forward to mostly. Then we will see with regards to next release, we have some new tracks but we also have two other bands (Sickrecy and Damned to Downfall) that take up quit some time so for World in Ruins I would say main goal for 2022 is to play more shows and see where that takes us.

Na black metalu se mi vždy líbila nenávist a zlo. Chlad, který v jiném stylu nenajdete. A také jakási jednoduchost a přehlednost, sveřepost a uzavřenost. To už samozřejmě dávno neplatí. Nové současné kapely se vydávají trošku jiným směrem. Snaží se o komplikovanější kompozice, jsou nepřehlednější. No a pak tu máme FUNERAL MIST. Smečku o jednom členovi (zde si říká Arioch, jinde MORTUUS). Projekt/kapela funguje od roku 1993 a prochází si svým vlastním vývojem.

Zastřené plochy, volné pokračování toho, co kdysi tvořili EMPEROR, ale také spousta různých odboček a dosud neprobádaných zákoutí. Novinka je svým způsobem pořád stará jak dávno otevřené hroby, ale Arioch se nebrání ani novějším postupům. Posluchači, kteří nad hudbou přemýšlejí a nedokáží si ji užít (nebo jsou jí přežraní), asi budou mít zase tunu připomínek, ale my, obyčejní smrtelníci, si necháme rádi vytrhnout srdce z těla. Album mě tak nějak přirozeně baví, možná i díky tomu, že je sevřené, kompaktní a velmi dobře se poslouchá.


FUNERAL MIST hrají komplikovaně tak akorát, aby deska nepřestala smrdět sírou. Zároveň se ale nejedná jen o obyčejné album v řadě, kterých vychází kolem spousta každý den. Postupy jsou pořád neotřelé a zajímavé, zvuk bych si sice dovedl představit trošku špinavější a "zlejší", ale pořád lepší, než drátem do oka. Ono vlastně ani nemá moc cenu nad nahrávkou nějak polemizovat. Myslím si, že víc než kdy jindy si songy pustíte a buď vám proniknou do krve a nebo ne. Osobně nemám k provedení, obalu, postupům, žádných větších připomínek. Black metal je pro mě ale poměrně vzácný, rád a s chutí si vyzobávám právě podobné kousky syrového masa. Základem je zlý satanistický black metal, s příklonem k BATHORY, PRIMMORDIAL a již zmiňovaným EMPEROR. Zdůrazněme ještě, že pod coverem je podepsán Timo Ketola (čest jeho památce). A jak tomu bývá u mě zvykem, musím napsat také nějaké své pocity, protože kdybych žádné neměl, o "Deiform" bych vůbec nepsal. Jsem někde na severu, hluboko v lesích a právě mi břichem projel ostrý nůž. Ledová čepel, moment překvapení, krev, co rozpouští bílý sníh. Myslím, že to není zase tak málo. Když černý kov, tak prosím v podobném provedení. Mrazivý, krvavý black metal, ohlodaný až na kost!


sumarizace:

Pokud se vám líbí kombinace black metalu, tmy, chladu, špíny a odhodlání zničit onen svět, tak rozhodně neváhejte. FUNERAL MIST mají v sobě obrovskou temnou sílu. Songy obsahují až magickou, velmi přitažlivou atmosféru. Člověk si připadá, že stojí někde na vrcholu skály, rozhodnutý, že každou chvíli skočí dolů. Pod námi je jen tma, záhrobí a smrt. Slyším zde také absolutní odhodlání a patrné stopy zimomřivého šílenství. Black metal v podání FUNERAL MIST je chladný, zákeřný, zlý ze své podstaty, ale také přemýšlivý, nutkající, neklidný a ošklivý. Připadám si jako oběšenec, houpající se v ledovém větru. Black metal, který ochladí vaše duše!

Recenze/review - MASSACRE - Resurgence (2021):

Hail MASSACRE! Greetings to the underworld. I was expecting the new album "Resurgence" like every death metal fan with great anticipation. It's been seven long years since the last record. Why so long? Please describe how the new album was created? But I must say that the wait was worth it. It's an absolute carnage!

Good morning Jakub, honestly, when we decided to do this thing again, recording a new album wasn’t even talked about. It was old friends getting together, playing shows, having fun. That was the plan, sadly it didn’t take long before the drama kicked in, the head butting, the clashes of personality. But it wasn’t long after half the band quit that we were getting contacted by Nuclear Blast, so we had to put a working line up together and start all over again. We recorded a new album and once again, clashes, conflicts, and it all fell apart. years' worth of work down the drain, In the end it all worked out, I really think at this point, listening back that fans would have been disappointed with the work. Not there was anything wrong with the recordings, the songs, but it wasn’t quite right. Under a different name, a different idea, and as its released now by our past members, its fine. It just wasn’t “Massacre”.


MASSACRE today is just two people - Kam Lee and Michael Borders. Does that mean they are the foundation? What about the other musicians, how did they contribute to the creation of the new songs? Who wrote the riffs? Also, you each live in a different country, did that give you any problems?

Yes, as of now, Kam and myself make up the core of the band. Everyone has a role to play, and we all do our parts. The new album was primarily written by Rogga and Jonny. It just worked out that way. Kam writing lyrics and Scott doing guitar solos. There never was any studio headbutting with someone telling the other “no, play that part like this, or don’t use that frequency on your track”. We all did our part, our way, each having faith in the others, and honestly was a very smooth process despite being done remotely from one another.


"Resurgence" has a great cover. It's signed by Wesley Benscoter. An excellent artist, his work for AUTOPSY, BROKEN HOPE, DECEASED, DEFILED, are not only interesting but memorable. He has unmistakable handwriting. How did you get together and why him? Does that mean that he was the one who could best represent what's happening on the album? Like, did he hear your music beforehand?

Kam reached out to him after Gerardo at Nuclear Blast mentioning him as a possibility. He jumped on it and got it done for us.


The cover and the lyrics, everything is inspired by H.P. Lovercraft. Which is your favourite work of his? How do you create lyrics? I think it's really hard to write something meaningful that fits the phrasing and doesn't sound silly. What are the lyrics on "Resurgence" about?

Kam has always been a fan of Lovecraft, always been a base of his ideas. That and old horror movies.Also there was an effort to “connect” some of these songs to those on “From Beyond”, as a true follow up to the album.

The sound was mixed by Dan Swano. I have to say, it's a good one. What was the brief? I find the newness old-school, but at the same time perfectly legible, dark, cold. How was it working with Dan? He's a great professional. By the way, how did you record? At each other's homes or together?

Jonny premixed everything, before sending to Dan, we gave him some direction, a general idea of what we had in mind, basic idea was to keep it a bit on the raw side. Sometimes all the studio poish takes away from the honesty of it all, wanted it to sound good but real.


On October 31st you released a single Halloween song. Does it mean that this song didn't fit on the album anymore? I know the single was released on CD? Aren't you planning a vinyl? How do you feel about Halloween? What does this holiday of the dead mean to you?

Halloween is Kams birthday haha. And the song was something we did for fun. I will tell you, there are two more EP’S and a LIVE album, done, ready at Nuclear Blast, that will release this summer 2022, already working on songs for the next album and will still drop random singles, covers, what ever we feel like doing. Fun song, hit record, release it.


Speaking of music carriers, what is your relationship to them? Nowadays, everything is streamed, downloaded from the internet, most people only listen digitally. I'm an old dog who still collects CDs, my friends collect vinyl, even cassettes are making a comeback. How are you? Are you a collector?

Streaming is starvation for musicians, and sounds like shit as well. Metal fans tend to like physical copies but judging from the numbers, streaming is a big deal. I’m not the collector I once was , and am guilty of downloading music for the flash drive in my truck since they don’t put CD players in new cars nowdays. Sadly between work, and the band, driving is the only time I get to listen to new music these days.


What about MASSACRE and concerts? Do you have any line-up for live performances? And will we ever get to see you on stage with the musicians who contributed to "Resurgence"? How about some touring (hope you won't forget Europe!)?

We just played a couple of shows here in the states, next year we have maryland Deathfest of course, a show in NYC (Day of Death) and we just signed a festival date in Texas with Carcass. We have a live line up, separate from recording. Europe is still a variable with the shutdowns, its hard to plan anything right now.


This brings me to the future of MASSACRE. I know that it was written somewhere that fans have something to look forward to in 2022, that you already have more material ready. Is that true? What do you have in store for us?

Haha already answered that one. Yes, new EP, and LIVE album, new singles and other fun releases. I know it sounds crazy, but we really are trying to have fun with this these days!


I've been listening to death metal since the beginning. I wonder how you perceive this style as a musician. What does it mean to you? Lifestyle? A hobby? Feel free to get philosophical.

In the beginning, as a young kid learning to play,while yes, you set out to play what you want to hear, you are limited it what you CAN play and as well, by the connections you make. I know great players that never could find the right crew, or while you can PLAY a certain music well, you can’t write it. As example, I’ve played bass for 40 years now. , my first real band was Massacre, ive played in other bands, played on albums for different types of music, I LOVE to play death metal, that feeling of the stage shaking under my feet when I hit the big low notes, but its very hard for me to write death metal music. I can, I have, there are parts on From Beyond I wrote, but if I just sit down to noodle around and write, other things come more naturally. It may be my age, not a kid anymore, it may be other music that influences me. I always felt the “only metal” mindset to be limiting and dull. In the early days you would never admit to liking a non metal form of music, labeled as a poser haha, But I enjoy anything well done, talented or cool at this point.


Do you have a message for the fans? To the labels? Promoters? You have space!

I just want everyone to know tthat we truly do apprecaiate, at this stage in our careers, to be able to still do this and have fans reach out with words of praise. Girls sending pictures of themselves in Massacre shirts is cool too!

I wish the band nothing but sold-out shows, truckloads of sold-out records and merchandise and I'll be looking forward to the live show! I'll be partying in the front row! Recenze/review - MASSACRE - Resurgence (2021):

Ave MASSACRE! Zdravím do podsvětí. Novou desku „Resurgence“ jsem očekával asi jako každý fanoušek death metalu s velkým napětím. Od minulé nahrávky uběhlo dlouhých sedm let. Proč vlastně tak dlouho? Popiš nám prosím, jak novinka vznikala? Musím ale říct, že se čekání vyplatilo. Je to absolutní masakr!

Dobré ráno, Jakube!. Upřímně, když jsme se rozhodli dát to zase do kupy, o nahrávání nového alba nebyla řeč. Bylo to o tom, že se staří přátele sejdou, zahrají koncerty a pobaví se. Takový byl plán, bohužel to netrvalo dlouho a začalo drama, třecí plochy, střety osobností. Zanedlouho poté, co polovina kapely odešla, nás kontaktovali Nuclear Blast, takže jsme museli dát dohromady funkční sestavu a začít znovu. Nahráli jsme nové album a znovu vznikly střety, konflikty a všechno se to zase rozpadlo, roky a roky práce. Nakonec to všechno dopadlo a opravdu si v tuto chvíli myslím, že fanoušci by byli z původní práce zklamáni. Na nahrávkách, skladbách nebylo nic špatného, ale nebylo to úplně ono. Pod jiným jménem, jinými nápady...takže tak, jak to nyní vydali naši bývalí členové, je to v pořádku. Prostě to nebyli "MASSACRE".


MASSACRE jsou dnes vlastně jen dva lidé - Kam Lee a Michael Borders. Znamená to, že jsou oni základem? A co ostatní muzikanti, jak se na tvorbě nových songů podíleli? Kdo skládal riffy? Každý navíc žijete v jiné zemi, nedělalo vám to problémy?

Ano, nyní tvoříme já a Kam jádro kapely. Každý má svou roli a všichni plníme své úkoly. Nové album napsali primárně Rogga a Jonny. Prostě to tak vyšlo. Kam píše texty a Scott skládá kytarová sóla. Nikdy nedošlo k žádnému studiovému tření, že by někdo, tomu druhému řekl „ne, hraj to takhle, nebo nepoužívej na své stopě tu a tu frekvenci“. Všichni jsme nahráli své party svým způsobem, každý s důvěrou v ostatní a upřímně řečeno, byl to velmi hladký proces, přestože jsme to dělali na dálku.


„Resurgence“ má parádní obal. Podepsán je pod ním Wesley Benscoter. Vynikající umělec, jeho práce pro AUTOPSY, BROKEN HOPE, DECEASED, DEFILED, jsou nejen zajímavé, ale člověk si je i pamatuje. Má nezaměnitelný rukopis. Jak jste se dali dohromady a proč právě on? Znamená to, že on dovedl nejlépe znázornit to, co se odehrává na albu? Slyšel třeba dopředu vaši hudbu?

Kam se na něj obrátil poté, co ho Gerardo z Nuclear Blast zmínil jako možnost. Skočil po tom a vytvořil jej pro nás.


Obal i texty, ze všeho je cítit inspirace H.P. Lovercraftem. Které jeho dílo máš nejraději? Jakým způsobem tvoříš texty? Podle mě je hrozně těžké napsat něco smysluplného, aby to sedělo do frázování a neznělo to hloupě. O čem jsou texty na „Resurgence“?

Kam byl vždy fanouškem Lovecrafta, vždy byl základem jeho nápadů. To a staré hororové filmy. Také jsme se snažili „propojit“ některé z těchto skladeb s těmi na „From Beyond“, jako skutečné pokračování alba.

Zvuk vám mixoval Dan Swano. Musím říct, že se povedl. Jaké bylo zadání? Mě připadá novinka staroškolská, ale zároveň perfektně čitelná, temná, chladná. Jak se vám s Danem spolupracovalo? On je velký profesionál. Mimochodem, jak jste vlastně nahrávali? Každý u sebe doma nebo dohromady?

Jonny vše předmixoval, než to poslal Danovi. Dali jsme mu jistý směr, obecnou představu o tom, co jsme měli na mysli, základní myšlenkou bylo udržet to trochu syrové. Někdy studia ubírají na autentičnosti, chtěli jsme, aby to znělo dobře, ale reálně.


31. října jste vydali ještě singl Halloween song. Znamená to, že se už tahle skladba na desku nevešla? Vím, že singl vyšel i na CD? Nechystáte i vinyl? Jak vlastně vnímáš Halloween ty? Co pro tebe tenhle svátek mrtvých znamená?

Halloween jsou Kamovi narozeniny, haha. A tato skladba byla něco, co jsme dělali pro zábavu. Řeknu vám, že máme hotové další dvě EP a LIVE album, připravené v Nuclear Blast, které vyjde v létě 2022, také už se pracuje na skladbách pro další album a stále budou vycházet náhodné singly, covery, cokoli, co budeme cítit, že chceme dělat.


Když už jsme u těch hudebních nosičů, tak jaký k nim máš vztah ty? V dnešní době se všechno streamuje, stahuje z internetu, většina lidí poslouchá už jen digitálně. Já jsem starý pes, který pořád sbírá CD, kamarádi zase vinyly, dokonce se čím dál tím víc vracejí kazety. Jak si na tom ty? Jsi sběratel?

Streamování je pro hudebníky hladovění a také to zní jako sračky. Metaloví fanoušci mají rádi fyzické nosiče, ale soudě podle čísel, je streamování velký problém. Nejsem sběratel, kterým jsem kdysi byl, a provinil jsem se stahováním hudby na flashku do auta, protože dnes už CD přehrávače do nových aut nedávají. Je smutné, že mezi prací a kapelou je řízení jedinou dobou, kdy mohu v dnešní době poslouchat novou hudbu.


Co MASSACRE a koncerty? Máte nějakou sestavu na živá vystoupení? A dočkáme se někdy toho, že vás uvidíme na pódiu s muzikanty, kteří se podíleli na „Resurgence“? Co nějaké turné (doufám, že nezapomenete na Evropu!)?

Právě jsme odehráli pár koncertů tady ve státech, příští rok máme samozřejmě Maryland Deathfest , koncert v NYC (Day of Death) a právě jsme podepsali datum festivalu v Texasu s Carcass. Máme koncertní sestavu, jinou než k nahrávání. S Evropou se to stále mění ohledně restrikcí, je těžké tam teď něco plánovat.


Tím se dostávám i k budoucnosti MASSCRE. Vím, že se někde psalo o tom, že se mají fanoušci v roce 2022 na co těšit, že máte už připravený další materiál. Je to pravda? Co pro nás chystáte?

Haha, už jsem na to odpověděl. Ano, nové EP a LIVE album, nové singly a další zábavné novinky. Vím, že to zní šíleně, ale v dnešní době se tím opravdu snažíme bavit!


Poslouchám death metal od jeho počátků. Zajímalo by mě, jak tento styl vnímáš ty jako muzikant. Co pro tebe znamená? Životní styl? Koníček? Klidně se pusť do filozofických úvah.

Na začátku, když se jako malé dítě učíte hrát, jste omezeni tím, co zahrát dokážete a také kontakty, které si utvoříte. Znám skvělé hráče, kteří nikdy nenašli tu správnou partu, nebo když určitou hudbu umíte dobře hrát, nedokážete ji složit. Například já hraji na basu už 40 let, moje první opravdová kapela byli Massacre, hrál jsem v jiných kapelách, hrál na albech různých hudebních žánrů, miluji hrát death metal, mám rád ten pocit, že se vám pódium třese pod nohama, když zahrajete velmi hluboké tóny, ale je pro mě hodně těžké skládat death metalovou hudbu. Mám nějaké party na From Beyond, které jsem napsal, ale když si sednu ke skládání, ostatní věci jsou mi přirozenější. Může to být mým věkem, už nejsem dítětem, může mě ovlivňovat jiná hudba. Vždy jsem měl pocit, že smýšlení typu „jedině metal“ je omezující a nudné. V začátcích byste nikdy nepřiznali, že se vám líbí nemetalové hudební žánry, označovány jako “pozérství”, haha, ale teď mě baví cokoliv, co je dobře udělané, talentované nebo cool.


Chceš něco vzkázat fanouškům? Labelům? Promotérům? Máš prostor!

Chci jen, aby všichni věděli, že si v této fázi naší kariéry opravdu vážíme toho, že to stále můžeme dělat a že máme fanoušky, kteří nešetří chválou. A holky, které posílají své fotky v tričkách Massacre, jsou taky skvělé!

Roztrhaná těla, lebky nabodnuté na kůlech. Dům plný bolesti. Vstupuji dovnitř, cítím pach krve. Smutek a strach. Kdo se ukrývá ve stínu? Pohřebiště kousek vedle, symboly žhnoucí do noci. Našlapuji tiše, umírám a znovu se rodím. Záblesk nože, jsem další na řadě. Zavřený v kleci pomalu odcházím na onen svět. Modlím se k dávno padlým modlám, stala se ze mě oběť. Proříznou mi hrdlo na kamenném oltáři a když přejdu na druhou stranu, tak jako prvního potkám samotného Satan.

Rituální death metal v podání malajských OBSCURIAL jsem objevil při svých nekonečných toulkách podzemím. Nejdříve mě zaujal obal (Zizi Amri), bílá s černou a k tomu rudá jako krev, rád a s chutí jsem se na cover díval. Velmi povedená práce! Pak tu máme morbidní a plesnivý zvuk, jak vystřižený ze starých katakomb. Zvony svolávají na poslední rozloučení. Málokdo ví, že je v rakvi jen pár prašivých kostí a že mi na pohřbu bude hrát "Funeral, Burial and Rites".


OBSCURIAL jsou syroví a suroví. Inspiraci čerpali v dávných dobách, když death metal jako styl začínal. Pro mě je nejdůležitější, že jim jejich hudbu věřím, že si mě získala svojí energií, silou a pochmurně podmanivou atmosférou. Je prostým faktem, že album je zahaleno do černého pláště z pavučin. Pánové jsou sice v některých momentech lehce monotónní a vše jsme samozřejmě již mnohokrát slyšeli jinde, ale nijak mi to nevadí a neruší mě to v nechutném a ošklivém zážitku. "Funeral, Burial and Rites" řeže tou správnou stranou nože. Baví mě špína a chlad, které z desky cítím. Jako bych se díval na smradlavou řeku, která vede k domu, který zmiňuji v úvodu. Převalují se v ní nefouknuté mrtvoly a v mlze se vznáší melodie, které se vám zadřou hluboko pod kůži. Jsem moc rád, že jsem OBSCURIAL potkal, poslechl si je a zařadil do svého playlistu. Roztrhaná těla, lebky nabodnuté na kůlech. Dům plný bolesti. Vstupuji dovnitř, cítím pach krve. Smutek a strach. Morbidní death metalové ozvěny ze starých pohřebišť!

Torn bodies, skulls impaled on stakes. A house full of pain. I walk in, I smell blood. Sadness and fear. Who is hiding in the shadows? Burial ground next door, symbols glowing into the night. I step on quietly, I die and I am born again. Flash of the knife, I'm next. Locked in a cage, I slowly leave for the afterlife. I pray to long-falled idols, I have become a victim. They will cut my throat on the stone altar, and when I go to the other side, I will meet Satan himself first.

I discovered the ritual death metal performed by the Malaysian OBSCURIAL during my endless wanderings underground. At first, I was interested in the cover (Zizi Amri), white with black and red as blood, I liked to look at the cover with pleasure and gusto. Very good work! Then we have a morbid and moldy sound, cut from old catacombs. The bells call for the last farewell. Few people know that there are only a few dusty bones in the coffin and that "Funeral, Burial and Rites" will play for me at the funeral.



OBSCURIAL are raw and raw. They drew inspiration from ancient times, when death metal as a style began. The most important thing for me is that I trust their music, that it won me over with its energy, strength and grim atmosphere. It's a simple fact that the album is wrapped in a black cobweb coat. Gentlemen are a bit monotonous at times and we have heard everything elsewhere many times, of course, but I don't mind and it doesn't bother me in a disgusting and ugly experience. "Funeral, Burial and Rites" cuts the right side of the knife. I enjoy the dirt and cold I feel from the board. It's like looking at a stinking river that leads to the house I mention in the introduction. Uninflated corpses roll in it and melodies float in the fog, which get stuck deep under your skin. I am very glad that I met OBSCURIAL, listened to them and included them in my playlist. Torn bodies, skulls impaled on stakes. A house full of pain. I walk in, I smell blood. Sadness and fear. Who is hiding in the shadows? Now I know, they are demons and they listen to "Funeral, Burial and Rites". And really loud. A very successful record in all aspects. Morbid death metal echoes from old burial grounds!

A few questions - interview with death metal band from Malaysia - OBSCURIAL.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play etc.?

Ave Jakub! Obscurial was formed officially in 2019 although the band idea came way back in 2017. We play death metal.

Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

The album Funeral, Burial and Rites was recorded at our guitarist Afiq/Oni home studio. All parts we recorded this year while we are going through movement control order (MCO) restrictions due to covid19. The album was produced by Obscurial, and Afiq took charge in the band’s sound. Mixing and mastering done by our friend Afnan Azlan.


How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

For now, only CD and digital release through Bandcamp. We made 300 copies and as by now, half already sold. Cassette will be released by Hostile Records next year.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with?

Lyrics were written by our vocalist Dee and Weng (Necrolatry Records). The lyrics deal with disease, plagues and death. It is also a homage to short story made by H.P. Lovecraft Colour Out of Space.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important?

The logo was drawn by our friend from Lavatory band, Andy. Do check out his Instagram @busuk.ink666 for some sick and filthy artwork. We all handle band’s website together, and graphics are made by our friends including Zizi Amri (Mindkaos). Yes, it is important since we live in year of 2021 where all informations are within our fingertips.


Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

We had planned to release this album since our demo Exaltation sold out last year, so pretty much its a self release. But our friend Mooks from Hostile Records approached us and we agreed to be part of their family or better known as Hell’s Children. Mooks is a dedicated metalhead and he really know how to took care of things. The discography speaks itself. We would like to thank Mooks and Hostile Records for this opportunity.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

Death, Deicide, Grave Miasma, Morbid Angel, Bloodbath and Brain Dead to name a few. There’s tons of band we idolise so its kinda complicated to list all haha!

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

No, but there’s a label from Czech approached us. We’ll see what happened next.


How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best?

Sadly we haven’t play any gigs yet. Obscurial came when covid19 are penetraring the world. Hopefully we managed to play our first gig on 2022.

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

Our main ambition at the moment are playing outside Malaysia. Japan might be the first destination we want to head into. Also we really hope we might have a chance to play at Kill-Town Death Fest in Copenhagen. It’s too early to talk about next album, but if Obscurial continue to get warm reception from the metal world, we might consider in the near future.

Sedí před zrcadlem a pozoruje svoje nebohé tělo. Pořád slyší v hlavě zlý jedovatý smích. Ostrá žiletka, tichý pláč, krev pomalu odtéká do vany. Můžeš se tisíckrát ptát proč, můžeš se modlit, klanět se všem svatým, ale odpověď nepřichází. Rozdrásáš si obličej, chceš cítit další bolest. Neodbytný pocit, že na tebe padá celý svět. Nihilismus je tvoje nové náboženství. Umíráš a znovu se rodíš. A stále žiješ ve stínu.

Když poslouchám nové EP finských BENOTHING, tak před sebou vidím spoustu podobných obrazů. Hudba kolem mě plyne jako černobílý depresivní film. Nasávám pach shnilého masa, bořím se po kolena do bažin. Kapela hraje přesně ten druh death metalu, který vás rozloží na prvočástice. 


Někdy nevím, jestli je normální svět venku a nebo u nás v domě šílenství, ale pak si poslechnu alba, jako je "Temporal Bliss Surrealms" a ihned vím, že pravda se ukrývá v temnotě. BENOTHING lze zařadit po bok smeček jako jsou MORBUS CHRON, HORRENDOUS, BEDSORE, OBLITERATION. Na starých death metalových základech jsou vystavěny komplikovanější a progresivnější kompozice. S dobrým zvukem, zajímavým obalem, se jedná o nahrávku, která udělá dobře všem, jejichž fantazie se pohybuje převážně ve stínech. EP se navíc opravdu dobře poslouchá, zadírá se mi postupně pod kůži. Hlavou se mi míhají divné myšlenky, zase vidím tu dívku, co se rozhodla ukončit svůj život. Hej děvče, poslechni si raději "Temporal Bliss Surrealms". I přes všechna shnilá těla, mokvající obličeje z alba cítím určitou naději. Působí na mě tak. Zpočátku chaoticky, časem začnete rozplétat jednotlivé motivy a odměnou vám bude krásný morbidní zážitek. Mozek se mi vaří ve vlastní šťávě, smrt je při poslechu velmi blízko. Doslova hmatatelná. Myslím, že se novinka povedla po všech stránkách. Je uvěřitelná, sebevědomá, zajímavá. Děsivý death metal s černou aurou!

He sits in front of the mirror and looks at his poor body. He can still hear the evil, poisonous laughter in his head. Razor sharp, silent crying, blood slowly draining into the bathtub. You can ask why a thousand times, you can pray, you can bow down to all the saints, but the answer doesn't come. You tear your face, you want to feel more pain. The insistent feeling that the whole world is falling on you. Nihilism is your new religion. You die and are born again. And still you live in the shadows.

When I listen to the new EP of Finnish BENOTHING, I see a lot of similar images in front of me. The music flows around me like a black and white depressing movie. I'm sucking in the smell of rotten flesh, sinking knee-deep into the swamp. The band plays exactly the kind of death metal that breaks you into elemental pieces.


Sometimes I don't know if it's the normal world outside or the madness in our house, but then I listen to albums like "Temporal Bliss Surrealms" and I know immediately that the truth is hidden in the darkness. BENOTHING can be placed alongside packs like MORBUS CHRON, HORRENDOUS, BEDSORE, OBLITERATION. More complicated and progressive compositions are built on old death metal foundations. With a good sound, interesting cover, this is a record that will do good to all whose imagination moves mostly in the shadows. Moreover, the EP is really good to listen to, getting under my skin gradually. Strange thoughts are running through my head, I see that girl again who decided to end her life. Hey girl, listen to "Temporal Bliss Surrealms" instead. Despite all the rotting bodies, wetting faces on the album, I feel some hope. I'm so impressed. Chaotic at first, eventually you start to unravel the various motifs and are rewarded with a beautiful morbid experience. My brain is boiling in its own juices, death is very close while listening. Literally palpable. I think that the novelty has succeeded in every aspect. It's believable, confident, interesting. Scary death metal with a black aura!

Porcování zmrzlého masa je samozřejmě těžké. Potřebujete nejen dobrý sekáček na maso, ale i zručnost. Také byste neměli být slabé povahy, protože pokud se vám z nechutností a trochu té krve zvedá žaludek, tak pro vás tahle práce není. Stejně jako death metal. Navíc, když je přidán i grindcore, to se pak dějí věci, které vyděsí bázlivého jedince ještě víc. Tohle jsou totiž opravdová jatka. Temná a šílená, plná opravdové smrti. 

Líbí se mi trend současných nových kapel typu ABRADED, že se jen nepromenují na sociálních sítích a nehovoří o tom, jak jsou true a opravdoví. Místo toho hrají a předkládají muziku, o které je pro mě radost psát. Jinak by u nás stejně neměli místo. Když jsem si pustil "Abraded" poprvé, měl jsem pocit, že na mě vytryskla hromada hnisu a zkažené krve. Nutno podotknout, že jsem se takto cítil pokaždé, když jsem se k desce vracel. 


Vše je neskutečně surové, syrové, jako by před vámi někdo odsekával maso od kostí. Kapela je z amerického Ohia a má na svém kontě ještě jednu demonahrávku ("Descendants of the Swamp" 2018). Pokud bychom chtěli tvorbu těchto šílenců k někomu přirovnat, volil bych asi kapely jako UNDERGANG, CIANIDE, AUTOPSY, MORTICIAN, staré CARCASS. Novinka mě fakt baví a to natolik, že jsem ji ve svém přehrávači často upřednostnil před mnohými o hodně slavnějšími jmény. Má v sobě totiž takovou tu starou špínu, odhodlání roztřískat vám lebku hudbou. Jako bych se díval na staré zkušené řezníky, kteří nejen, že perfektně rozumí svému řemeslu, ale svoji práci si i užívají. A to s úchylným úsměvem spokojenosti na tváři. ABRADED jsou chladní, temní a úderní zároveň. Divocí a nespoutaní. Úplně před sebou vidím koncert někde v malém klubu za městem. Pánové přijdou, nasekají to do nás pod tlakem a odejdou středem. Zůstanou po nich jenom slizké a hluboké díry v našich mozcích. Přesně takové podobné pokrmy si dávám pokaždé, když si potřebuji vyčistit hlavu. Masivní zvuk a morbidní obal vše jen krásně podtrhují. Vítejte na starých jatkách! Death grind metalový masakr!


sumarizace:

ABRADED povstali z mrtvých, aby nám, starým fanouškům, zprostředkovali ozvěny ze záhrobí. Se sílou sobě vlastní, se špinavým zvukem, s temnou energií ve skladbách, poprvé na dlouhohrajícím albu, bojují se všemi démony podsvětí. Jedná se o starý, shnilý death metal, v podobě, v jaké se hrával někdy na přelomu osmdesátých a devadesátých let. Kapela dává jasně na vědomí, že peklo opravdu existuje.

Při poslechu "Abraded" si můžeme zavzpomínat na desky kapel UNDERGANG, CIANIDE, AUTOPSY, MORTICIAN, staré CARCASS. Zkrátka a jednoduše, stará dobrá škola jak se patří. Pokud rádi a často trávíte dlouhé hodiny v opuštěných katakombách a s chutí se přehrabujete v trouchnivějících kostech, tak rozhodně neváhejte. ABRADED jsou underground toho nejhrubšího zrna a jejich novinka připomíná obrovský mlýn na maso, který vás strhne do víru samotné smrti. Album mohu doporučit všech fanouškům podsvětí a shnilých death metalových melodií. Bude vám vybroušen otisk hudby do vašich zkažených duší. Starý ošklivý a nechutný smrtící kov, zahraný s přehledem, jistotou a šílenstvím v očích! Vítejte na starých jatkách! Death grind metalový masakr!
