Vždycky mě fascinovalo ticho a klid starých hřbitovů. Mlha, vznášející se nad hroby i stromy, ševelící ve větru. Sedával jsem úplně vzadu, abych nerušil pochmurnou atmosféru. Zůstával jsem dlouho do večera, kdy už bylo dávno zavřeno. Naslouchal jsem šepotu nemrtvých a čekal, až se úplně probudí. Chladná márnice vydala další ze svých děsivých svědectví. Finští tmáři HOODED MENACE jsou po čtyřech letech zpět, aby nám přinesli další zprávy z onoho světa.

Zasvěcení moc dobře vědí, že mám dlouhodobě pro tuhle smečku slabost (důkazem budiž recenze i rozhovor, které jsou odkazovány dole pod dnešním článkem). Líbí se mi jejich rukopis, originální krvavý otisk, který po jejich hudbě pokaždé zůstává. Tajemno, uhrančivé nálady starých pohřebišť. Pamatujete promítání šustících VHS kazet? Horory plné krve a utrpení. Nedokonalé záběry byly velmi uvěřitelné, opravdové, reálné, syrové a autentické, stejně jako nové album těchto démonů temnoty. 


Letos mi přijdou Finové melodičtější, vzdušnější, chladnější a epičtější. Osobně tento lehký posun v rámci doom death metalového zákona (s heavy metalovým otiskem) kvituji. I u nás pomalu nastává podzim a listí žloutne. Je sychravo, pošmourno, chlad nám zalézá do kostí a zůstává tam. Stejně jako nová nahrávka "Lachrymose Monuments of Obscuration". Svět je při poslechu opravdu zahalený do krvavé mlhy, nálady jsou depresivní a každým dalším poslechem novinka roste. Stále objevuji nové a nové nápady, pasáže, nahrubo naseknou tmu a motivy, které ve mě vyvolávají šílené noční můry. Neexistuje už žádná naděje, černé mraky jsou nízko, skoro se dotýkají země. Určitě znáte ty napjaté chvíle před bouřkou. Jakoby se nadále rozšiřovaly řady nemrtvých, kteří se chtějí vrátit na světlo, aby se přišli pomstít za všechna příkoří, která na nich byla spáchána. Novinka je nejen velmi návyková, ale má také perfektně ošetřený zvuk (Heikki Marttila - recording, mixing, Jaime Gómez Arellano - mastering). O krásně morbidním a tajemném obalu netřeba diskutovat (autorem je Wes Benscoter), už teď vím, že jej musím mít na triku. Po formální stránce je opravdu vše v nejlepším pořádku. Vy se tak můžete v klidu soustředit na jednotlivé nápady, užívat si pochmurnou náladu. Vždycky mě fascinoval les, pomalu se ukládající k zimnímu spánku. Jeho syrovost, záhady, ale i krutost a bolest ohlodaná na kost. S novým albem to mám nastavené stejně. Opravdu si jej užívám. Nejvíce ve chvílích, když se ztratím mezi stromy a ocitnu se na starém pohřebišti. Vždycky mě fascinovalo ticho a klid starých hřbitovů. Mlha, vznášející se nad hroby i stromy, ševelící ve větru. Chladná márnice vydala další ze svých děsivých svědectví. Ano, jsem zde správně. Tahle nahrávka drásá zevnitř. Pochmurná, temná a chladná doom death metalová panychida! Děsivé přízraky znovu ožívají!

I have always been fascinated by the silence and tranquility of old cemeteries. Fog hovering over graves and trees, rustling in the wind. I would sit at the very back so as not to disturb the gloomy atmosphere. I would stay long into the evening, long after closing time. I would listen to the whispers of the undead and wait for them to wake up completely. The cold morgue has released another of its terrifying testimonies. Finnish dark masters HOODED MENACE are back after four years to bring us more news from that world.

Those in the know are well aware that I have a long-standing soft spot for this band (as evidenced by the review and interview linked below today's article). I like their style, the original bloody imprint that their music always leaves behind. The mystery, the haunting mood of old graveyards. Do you remember watching scratchy VHS tapes? Horror movies full of blood and suffering. The imperfect shots were very believable, real, raw, and authentic, just like the new album from these demons of darkness. 


This year, the Finns seem more melodic, airier, colder, and more epic to me. Personally, I welcome this slight shift within the framework of doom death metal (with a heavy metal imprint). Autumn is slowly arriving here too, and the leaves are turning yellow. It's damp and gloomy, the cold creeps into our bones and stays there. Just like the new album "Lachrymose Monuments of Obscuration". When listening to it, the world is truly shrouded in a bloody fog, the mood is depressing, and with each listen, the new album grows on you. I keep discovering new ideas, passages, roughly chopped darkness, and motifs that give me crazy nightmares. There is no hope left, the black clouds are low, almost touching the ground. You surely know those tense moments before a storm. It's as if the ranks of the undead are expanding, wanting to return to the light to take revenge for all the injustices committed against them. The new album is not only highly addictive, but also has perfectly crafted sound (Heikki Marttila - recording, mixing, Jaime Gómez Arellano - mastering). The beautifully morbid and mysterious cover art (by Wes Benscoter) needs no discussion; I already know I have to have it on a T-shirt. Formally speaking, everything is in perfect order. You can calmly focus on individual ideas and enjoy the gloomy mood. I have always been fascinated by the forest slowly settling into hibernation. Its rawness, mysteries, but also cruelty and pain gnawed to the bone. I feel the same way about the new album. I really enjoy it. Most of all when I get lost among the trees and find myself in an old burial ground. I have always been fascinated by the silence and tranquility of old cemeteries. The fog hovering over the graves and trees, rustling in the wind. I used to sit at the very back so as not to disturb the gloomy atmosphere. I stayed long into the evening, long after it had closed. Hromada hořících těl. Kříže obrácené směrem dolů. Nějak takhle si všichni představují peklo. Jenže se jedná jen o další čin šílených lidí. Kdysi dávno byli prokleti a ve jménu své víry se rozhodli páchat další a další zlo. Zoceleni ve starodávných rituálech obětovali svým modlám. Smrt má mnoho podob a tu, kterou zvolili finští tmáři RITUALHAMMER, je hodně násilná, špinavá, ušpiněná od krve. Pokud se týká hudby, tak se jedná o přesně takový ten jedovatý, v tom nejhlubším podzemí umíchaný, jedovatý koktejl z chladného black metalu a surové, plesnivé smrti.

Pro tuhle hudbu musíte obětovat světlo, musíte se naplno oddat stínům. Pánové to dokázali jak ve svých domovských kapelách (například Riivaus, Sacrificium Carmen, Mörbid Vomit, Licht Des Urteils, Coraxul a Wömit Angel) a činí tak i na novém albu "Grand Pestilential Flame". Tohle je nahrávka, u které shoříte na popel. 



Hudba je zde ukována z té nejkvalitnější surové oceli. Pokud rádi a často trávíte svůj čas v podzemí a touláte se s chutí nekonečnými chodbami Hádovy říše, potom je nové album určeno i pro vás. Fanoušci třeba takových ORDER FORM CHAOS, VOMITOR, MORTEM, DESASTER, AURA NOIR, DEICIDE, budou rozhodně spokojeni, stejně jako já, který s novinkou rád uléhám každé ráno do své oblíbení rakve. Skladby v sobě mají pověstný drive a zničující sílu, nezapomíná se ale ani na chlad. Nahrávka je tak spíše krvavým rituálem, než jen obyčejnou hudbou. Na špínu se zde příliš nehledí, zvuk je náležitě hnilobně ošetřen. Riffy jsou ostré jako hřeby, které jednou zatlučou i do tvé rakve, vokál  nasáklý chorobami a o bicí vám vyrvou vnitřnosti z těla. Tohle je muzika do prašivých kobek, ve kterých leží navěky těla prokletých. Jednotlivé motivy jsou chladné a temné na povrchu, ale uvnitř hoří jasným plamenem. Exhumujte další mrtvoly padlých kněží a vyskládejte je na hromadu. Hranice musí hořet! Na těchto finských tmářích se mi líbí, že jim věřím každý tón, každou morbidní melodii. Vypadá to, že nám v žilách koluje stejná zkažená krev. Jasně, pánové nepřinášejí do podzemí nic převratného, ani objevného, ale novinka není jenom obyčejným řemeslem. Naopak, najdete zde spoustu temných zákoutí, děsivých motivů, které vás navěky proklejí a strhnou do hlubiny. Hromada hořících těl. Kříže obrácené směrem dolů. Death has many forms and the one chosen by the Finnish darklings RITUALHAMMER is very violent, dirty, stained with blood. Fans of such bands as ORDER FORM CHAOS, VOMITOR, MORTEM, DESASTER, AURA NOIR, DEICIDE will definitely be satisfied, as will I, who like to lie down in my favorite coffin every morning with the new album. The songs have the famous drive and destructive power, but the coldness is not forgotten either. The recording is more of a bloody ritual than just ordinary music. There is no regard for dirt here, the sound is properly putridly treated. The riffs are sharp as nails that will one day drive into your coffin, the vocals soaked in diseases and the drums will rip the insides out of your body. This is music for dusty dungeons, where the bodies of the damned lie forever. Individual motifs are cold and dark on the surface, but inside they burn with a bright flame. Exhume more corpses of fallen priests and pile them up. The borders must burn! What I like about these Finnish darkies is that I trust their every note, every morbid melody. It seems that the same rotten blood flows in our veins. Sure, the gentlemen are not bringing anything revolutionary or groundbreaking to the underground, but novelty is not just an ordinary craft. On the contrary, you will find many dark corners here, terrifying motifs that will curse you forever and drag you into the depths. A pile of burning bodies. Crosses facing downwards. Původně to měl být krásný výlet v lesích. Jenže se celý den nakonec stal děsivou noční můrou. Sešel si z cesty a ocitl ses na starém pohřebišti. Unaven po těžké chůzi si usnul mezi hroby. Probuzen uprostřed noci si sledoval, jak ze země vylézají ty nejděsivější přízraky. Zombie bez tváří, nemrtví, toužící po čerstvé krvi. Stával tu kdysi znesvěcený klášter, plný zla, špíny a nenávisti. Ocitl ses uprostřed šíleného, krvavého hororu.

Éterem zní nové album švédských maniaků RIBSPREADER. Kapely, která je navěky oddaná stínům. V čele s Roggou Johanssonem smečka opět zaútočila z toho nejhlubšího podzemí. Ostré riffy, po kterých odpadává maso od kostí, typický rukopis, songy plné zkažené krve. Ne, pánové nepřinášejí nic nového do záhrobí, ale svoje smradlavé řemeslo stále odvádějí na velmi dobrou. 


Můžeme mít spoustu připomínek k tomu, že se Rogga a jeho věrní již opakují, že mnohé jeho kapely a projekty jsou si navzájem možná až příliš podobné, ale to nic nemění na tom, že novinka opět řeže tou správnou stranou nože. Pokud je pro vás, stejně jako pro mě, nejdůležitější u smrtícího kovu absolutní tma a chlad a rádi se stále procházíte ve starých katakombách, potom jste zde správně. Dostanete poctivě, nahrubo nakrájenou porci syrového masa. Ocitnete se na druhé straně, za řekou Styx a budete naslouchat řevu starodávných bestií. Náhodě nebylo opět ponecháno nic. Motiv na obalu vytvořila španělská umělkyně Lucretia Morti a považuji jej za velmi povedený. Žádných námitek nemám ani proti masivnímu, dobře čitelnému zvuku. Po formální stránce je vše v absolutním pořádku. Jasně, že hudba samotná zde již byla mnohokrát a rozdíly poznají jen opravdoví fanoušci. Kapele ale nemůžete upřít, že stále umí vytvořit náležitě morbidní, hororovou atmosféru. Není to nic převratného, ani zásadního, co by otočilo hudebními dějinami, ale to zde ani není účelem. Novinka je určena pro pravověrné, ortodoxní fanoušky stylu. Pokud máte stále svůj hudební kompas nasměřováný na sever, do hlubokých lesů, na pradávná pohřebiště, potom otočte volume doprava a nechte se unášet melodiemi, které nejsou z našeho světa. It was supposed to be a beautiful trip in the woods. But the whole day turned into a terrifying nightmare. You strayed from the path and found yourself in an old graveyard. Tired from the difficult walk, you fell asleep among the graves. Awoken in the middle of the night, you watched as the most terrifying specters crawled out of the ground. Faceless zombies, the undead, craving fresh blood. There used to be a desecrated monastery here, full of evil, filth, and hatred. You found yourself in the middle of a crazy, bloody horror movie.

The new album by Swedish maniacs RIBSPREADER is now available. A band that is forever devoted to the shadows. Led by Rogga Johansson, the pack has once again attacked from the deepest underground. Sharp riffs that tear flesh from bones, a distinctive style, songs full of rotten blood. No, these gentlemen bring nothing new to the afterlife, but they still do their stinking craft very well. 



We may have many comments about Rogga and his loyal followers repeating themselves, about how many of his bands and projects are perhaps too similar to each other, but that doesn't change the fact that the new album once again cuts with the right side of the knife. If, like me, the most important thing for you in death metal is absolute darkness and cold, and you still like to wander through old catacombs, then you've come to the right place. You'll get a hearty, roughly chopped portion of raw meat. You'll find yourself on the other side, beyond the River Styx, listening to the roar of ancient beasts. Once again, nothing was left to chance. The cover art was created by Spanish artist Lucretia Morti, and I consider it very well done. I have no objections to the massive, easy-to-read sound either. Formally, everything is in perfect order. Sure, the music itself has been here many times before, and only true fans will notice the differences. But you can't deny that the band still knows how to create a suitably morbid, horror atmosphere. It's nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking that would change the course of music history, but that's not the point. This new release is intended for true, orthodox fans of the genre. If your musical compass is still pointing north, into the deep forests, to ancient burial grounds, then turn up the volume and let yourself be carried away by melodies that are not of this world. They were created in the afterlife, among the undead. It was supposed to be a beautiful trip in the woods. But the whole day turned into a terrifying nightmare. Někdy si připadám jako závislý. Moje tělo se toulá temným světem. Bez duše, bez nálady. Padá na mě jako nějaký černý mrak splín. Všude kolem jsou jen války, násilí, člověk se stal dávno člověku vlkem. Nic mě nebaví. Všechno se opakuje v podivných kruzích. Stále stejné obličeje, trapné řeči i vtipy. Nakonec skončím u kamaráda v garáži. Dáme pár piv a potom, ostatně jako vždycky, stočíme řeč na muziku. Hele, nevíš o nějakém dobrém thrash metalu? O kapele, která umí všem nakopat zadky? 

Konečně se usměju. Jasně, že vím. Bavorští WHITE MANTIS jsou sice naplno věrni stylu zvaném kdysi teutonic thrash metal, ale uchopili jej po svém a snaží se, aby přinesli i něco nového, zajímavého. Vložíme CD do přehrávače, dopijeme další pivo a začneme mlátit pěstí do stolu. Nakonec skončíme v malém soukromém mosh-pitu. Vypadáme možná jako dva staří blázni, ale přátelé, hudba se má poslouchat hlavně srdcem. Myslím si, že není co řešit, tohle album řeže tou správnou stranou nože. 


Mě se asi nejvíc líbí, že kapela není jenom dnes tolik obyčejnou retro vzpomínkou. Jasně, zazní tu zřetelné odkazy na KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, VOIVOD, MEGADETH, ale jestliže jsou tyhle vzory v dnešní době již trošku unavené (mimo VOIVOD), tak WHITE MANTIS přinášejí navíc energii, tlak, touhu ničit hudbou. Novinka se opravdu velmi dobře poslouchá, víceméně sama leze do hlavy i do podvědomí. Líbí se mi neotřelé refrény, divoké pasáže, různé vsuvky, užívám si poctivě ošetřený zvuk i dobře namalovaný motiv na obalu. Formální stránka je v nejlepším pořádku. To by ale samozřejmě nestačilo. Je to hlavně hudba samotná, jednotlivé motivy, nahrubo nasekaná tma i chlad, jinakost, odlišnost, co mě na "Arrows At The Sun" baví. Jestli můžete každý den potkat desítky thrash kapel, které znějí úplně stejně (a přesto mají mnohdy pro mě nepochopitelný úspěch), Němci na to jdou přeci jen trošku jinak. Jsou zajímaví, mají dobré nápady, talent na to, přesvědčit mě na svoji stranu. Chtělo by to malý klub někde na periferii města. Tak do dvou stovek fanoušků a volume pořádně nahlas. Myslím si, že naživo musí tahle hudba doslova zabíjet. Dopijeme pivo, znovu se uzavřeme do svých ulit a vrátíme se do obyčejného nudného života. Uvnitř nás ale stále tepe srdce v rytmu thrash metalu. Pokud to máte stejně a rádi objevujete nové dobré kapely, tak neváhejte ani chvilku. Pokaždé, když se moje tělo toulá temným světem, když jsem bez duše, bez nálady. Když na mě padá jako nějaký černý mrak splín, volím tohle album a rvu si jej pod tlakem do hlavy. Za mě, starého psa, rozhodně doporučuji!  Syrové, ostré, thrash metalové album, které vás smete z povrchu zemského! Přesný útok přímo na solar plexus!

Sometimes I feel like an addict. My body wanders through a dark world. Without a soul, without a mood. It falls on me like a black cloud of bile. All around there are only wars, violence, man has long since become a wolf to man. I don't enjoy anything. Everything repeats itself in strange circles. Always the same faces, awkward conversations and jokes. Finally I end up at a friend's garage. We have a few beers and then, as always, we turn the conversation to music. Hey, don't you know of any good thrash metal? A band that can kick everyone's asses?

I finally smile. Of course I do. Bavarian WHITE MANTIS are fully faithful to the style once called Teutonic thrash metal, but they have taken it in their own way and are trying to bring something new, interesting. We put the CD in the player, finish another beer and start banging our fists on the table. Finally we end up in a small private mosh pit. We may look like two old fools, but friends, music should be listened to with the heart. I think there's nothing to worry about, this album cuts with the right side of the knife.


What I like most is that the band is not just an ordinary retro memory today. Sure, there are clear references to KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, VOIVOD, MEGADETH, but if these models are a bit tired nowadays (except for VOIVOD), WHITE MANTIS brings extra energy, pressure, a desire to destroy with music. The new album is really good to listen to, it more or less gets into your head and subconscious on its own. I like the fresh choruses, wild passages, various inserts, I enjoy the honestly treated sound and the well-painted motif on the cover. The formal side is in top order. But of course that wouldn't be enough. It's mainly the music itself, the individual motifs, the roughly chopped darkness and coldness, the otherness, the difference, what I enjoy about "Arrows At The Sun". If you can meet dozens of thrash bands every day that sound exactly the same (and yet often have incomprehensible success for me), the Germans do it a little differently. They are interesting, have good ideas, a talent for convincing me to their side. It would take a small club somewhere on the outskirts of the city. So up to two hundred fans and the volume really loud. I think that this music must literally kill live. We finish our beer, close ourselves in our shells again and return to our ordinary boring life. But inside us, our hearts still beat to the rhythm of thrash metal. If you feel the same way and like discovering new good bands, then don't hesitate for a moment. Every time my body wanders through a dark world, when I am soulless, without a mood. When a black cloud of spleen falls on me, I choose this album and tear it into my head under pressure. For me, an old dog, I definitely recommend it! A raw, sharp, thrash metal album that will sweep you off the face of the earth! A precise attack straight to the solar plexus!

Interview with thrash death metal band from France - MORTAL SCEPTER.

Ave MORTAL SCEPTER! I haven't found any interviews with you in Czech anywhere. So, first of all, could you please introduce the band to readers who don't know you yet? Feel free to start from the very beginning and take us through the entire history of MORTAL SCEPTER.

Mortal Scepter was formed back in 2012 in Dunkirk, in the north of France. We were just a bunch of long-time friends wanting to play the music we loved – aggressive thrash and death metal. Our first demo came out in 2014, followed by the EP As Time Sharpens the Sentence. In 2018, we released our debut album Where Light Suffocates, which already showed our mix of Germanic thrash and early death metal. After some years of writing and refining our sound, we are now back with our second album Ethereal Dominance. One important detail: we’ve kept the exact same line-up since the very beginning. That stability is something we’re really proud of.


This year you are releasing your new album, "Ethereal Dominance." Once again, it's dark, rough, and honest thrash/black metal. Did you approach the recording differently than last time, or did you stick to tried and tested methods?

Yes, definitely. We learned a lot from Where Light Suffocates, especially what we didn’t want to repeat. This time we were better prepared, both as musicians and in terms of production. We recorded with Raph Henry, who already knew our music and really understood what we were aiming for. We also recorded with a click track, which made a big difference in tightness. Then the mastering was done by Benoît Roux. The result is more organic, more powerful, and much closer to how Mortal Scepter actually sounds.

The new album seems to me to be a lot more complicated, perhaps less accessible at first, but at the same time incredibly dark and evil. Was that intentional? How did the album come about and how did you compose the music?

It was intentional, yes. From the very beginning, we wanted Ethereal Dominance to be darker, more technical, and more varied than the first album. We started writing just after Where Light Suffocates was released, but the first attempts didn’t satisfy us at all. Then Covid arrived, which slowed things down. In the end, it took us about two years to finish nine songs, and we even set one aside because it wasn’t at the same level. The writing process is collective – everyone brings riffs and ideas, and then we build the songs together. Some came quickly, like the 10-minute closer Into the Wolves Den, while others took weeks of work.


I have "Ethereal Dominance" on my MP3 player and I have to say that I am literally absorbed by it. It's not just great ideas, but also the sound, which is devastating in a word. I'm sitting on the tram, for example, and suddenly I find myself tapping my foot. I feel like starting to party. If I weren't a man of a certain age, I probably would. Where did you record the album and who is credited with the mastering?

We recorded with Raph Henry at Heldscalla Studio (France), and it was an excellent experience. He’s known us since the first album, and, just like us, he hates the way it sounds. So he knew exactly how to get the best out of us. The whole process with him was both fun and rewarding—we all grew as musicians working alongside him. The mastering was made by Benoît Roux who immediately understood what we were aiming for and delivered exactly what we needed. We’re really happy with how it all turned out. Together they gave the album the punch and clarity we were missing before.

Who wrote the lyrics for "Ethereal Dominance"? What are they about? Where do you get your inspiration for the themes?

Valentin Vanhaute (bass/vocals) writes almost all the lyrics. The main themes are inspired by science fiction and cosmic horror. Authors like Peter Watts (Blindsight) or Liu Cixin (The Three-Body problem) were important influences. The lyrics deal with subjects such as the Fermi paradox, the indifference of the universe, the end of civilizations… but always through the lens of thrash and death metal aggression.


Who designed the cover for "Ethereal Dominance"? I really like his work. How did you choose the cover design?

The artwork was done by our longtime friend Jon Whiplash. He also worked on our previous releases. We only gave him two directions: it had to be sci-fi/horror, and in a comic-book style reminiscent of Philippe Druillet. He immediately captured the spirit of the album. The result fits perfectly with the music – threatening, futuristic, and violent.

Let's go back to the beginning... What was the initial impulse that led you to form the band? And why thrash black metal? It's not exactly a style that will bring you great "fame."

At the beginning it was simple: we were friends who grew up together, playing the music we loved. We were obsessed with bands like Kreator, Sadus, Massacra, Sepultura, and Death. Thrash and death metal felt natural for us – it’s aggressive, fast, dark, and powerful. We never expected fame, we just wanted to create our own contribution to that tradition.


You come from France and play extreme thrash/black metal. Our readers would definitely be interested to know how your metal scene works. To tell you the truth, lately I've been hearing only great bands from you (I love SKELETHAL!). Does that mean that the scene is currently very strong in your country? What about concerts, how many people attend?

The French scene has always had legendary bands like Loudblast, Agressor, Massacra, or Mercyless, and today it’s still very strong and diverse. Bands like our close friends Skelethal are proof of the energy and quality coming out of France. The underground is alive, even if it’s not always easy to find decent venues to play. As for attendance, it really depends on the city and the line-up. People do come to shows, but of course it’s not the same numbers you’d see in countries like Germany where extreme metal is a bit more popular.

Your music shows that you are influenced by both the American thrash death metal school and old European bands. How about you as fans? Do you prefer the original metal of the nineties or do you also draw inspiration from new albums? If so, I'd be interested to know which bands had/have the biggest influence on MORTAL SCEPTER.

Both ! If a riff was killer in 1985, it still is in 2025! We are definitely influenced by the classics – German thrash, early US death, Atheist, Pestilence, Sepultura’s Beneath the Remains – but we also listen to newer bands. We love the energy of bands like Vektor or some of the modern techno-thrash scene, for example. Inspiration comes from everywhere as long as it’s honest and aggressive.

What about you and concerts in general? Are you a band that plays as many concerts as possible, or are you very selective? Do you have any dreams, such as a band you'd like to tour or festival with, or a city where you'd like to perform?

We love playing live, but we’re still a bit selective about the shows we take. Over the last few years we’ve been rather quiet, so we didn’t have that many opportunities. That said, we truly enjoyed the ones we did play—like Necrowretch’s release party, opening for Misanthrope and Loudblast, or playing the Anthems of Steel festival, among others. Now with the release of Ethereal Dominance we really hope to get more chances to hit the stage. There are honestly too many places we’d love to play to name them all! Many festivals look exciting, and we’d love to discover new cities and countries through our music. Playing in the Czech Republic, at Thrash Nightmare Festival for example, would be amazing!

 

What does MORTAL SCEPTER have planned for the coming months? If you have anything on your mind that you would like to say to fans, labels, or promoters, here's your chance…

Right now, our main focus is promoting Ethereal Dominance and bringing it to the stage as much as possible. We don’t want to wait another six years before the next album, but at the same time we won’t rush anything—the goal is always to do even better next time. In the meantime, we’ll work hard, play shows, and keep pushing Mortal Scepter forward. To promoters: get in touch, we’re definitely interested in playing wherever possible! Ave MORTAL SCEPTER! Nikde jsem s vámi nenašel žádný rozhovor v češtině. Poprosím tě tedy nejdřív, abys čtenářům, kteří vás ještě neznají, představil kapelu. Můžeš klidně začít úplně od začátku a provést nás celou historií MORTAL SCEPTER.

Mortal Scepter vznikli v roce 2012 v Dunkerque na severu Francie. Byli jsme jen parta dlouholetých přátel, kteří chtěli hrát hudbu, kterou milovali – agresivní thrash a death metal. Naše první demo vyšlo v roce 2014, následovalo EP As Time Sharpens the Sentence. V roce 2018 jsme vydali naše debutové album Where Light Suffocates, které již ukázalo naši směs germánského thrashe a raného death metalu. Po několika letech psaní a zdokonalování našeho zvuku jsme nyní zpět s naším druhým albem Ethereal Dominance. Jedna důležitá podrobnost: od samého začátku máme naprosto stejné složení. Na tuto stabilitu jsme opravdu hrdí.


Letos vydáváte čerstvou novinku „Ethereal Dominance“. Opět se jedná o temný, drsný a poctivý thrash/black metal. Přistupovali jste k nahrávání jinak než minule nebo jste zvolili ověřené postupy?

Ano, rozhodně. Z alba Where Light Suffocates jsme se hodně naučili, zejména to, co jsme nechtěli opakovat. Tentokrát jsme byli lépe připraveni, jak po hudební stránce, tak po stránce produkční. Nahrávali jsme s Raphem Henrym, který už znal naši hudbu a opravdu rozuměl tomu, čeho jsme chtěli dosáhnout. Nahrávali jsme také s klikovou stopou, což mělo velký vliv na přesnost. Mastering pak provedl Benoît Roux. Výsledek je organičtější, silnější a mnohem blíže tomu, jak Mortal Scepter skutečně zní.

Nová deska mi přijde o nějaký řád komplikovanější, zpočátku možná méně přístupná, zároveň ale neskutečně temná a zlá. Byl to záměr? Jak vlastně album vznikalo a jakým způsobem jste skládali muziku?

Ano, bylo to záměrné. Od samého začátku jsme chtěli, aby album Ethereal Dominance bylo temnější, techničtější a rozmanitější než první album. S psaním jsme začali hned po vydání alba Where Light Suffocates, ale první pokusy nás vůbec neuspokojily. Pak přišel Covid, který vše zpomalil. Nakonec nám trvalo asi dva roky, než jsme dokončili devět skladeb, a jednu jsme dokonce odložili, protože nebyla na stejné úrovni. Proces psaní je kolektivní – každý přináší riffy a nápady a pak společně skládáme písně. Některé vznikly rychle, jako například desetiminutová závěrečná Into the Wolves Den, zatímco jiné vyžadovaly týdny práce.


Mám „Ethereal Dominance“ ve svém MP3 přehrávači a musím říct, že jsem jím doslova pohlcen. Nejsou to jen skvělé nápady, ale i zvuk, který je jedním slovem devastující. Sedím třeba v tramvaji a najednou se přistihnu, že si podupávám nohou. Mám sto chutí začít pařit. Nebýt už pán v letech, asi bych to i udělal. Kde jste desku nahrávali a kdo je podepsán pod masteringem?

Nahrávali jsme s Raphem Henrym ve studiu Heldscalla (Francie) a byla to skvělá zkušenost. Zná nás už od prvního alba a stejně jako my nesnáší, jak zní. Takže přesně věděl, jak z nás dostat to nejlepší. Celý proces s ním byl zábavný a obohacující – všichni jsme se díky spolupráci s ním jako hudebníci posunuli dál. Mastering provedl Benoît Roux, který okamžitě pochopil, čeho chceme dosáhnout, a dodal přesně to, co jsme potřebovali. Jsme opravdu spokojeni s tím, jak to dopadlo. Společně dodali albu sílu a čistotu, které nám předtím chyběly.

Kdo je autorem textů na „Ethereal Dominance“? A o čem pojednávají? Kde pro témata berete inspiraci?

Valentin Vanhaute (baskytara/zpěv) píše téměř všechny texty. Hlavní témata jsou inspirována sci-fi a kosmickým hororem. Významný vliv na něj měli autoři jako Peter Watts (Blindsight) nebo Liu Cixin (The Three-Body problem). Texty se zabývají tématy jako Fermiho paradox, lhostejnost vesmíru, konec civilizací... ale vždy skrze prizma agresivity thrash a death metalu.


Kdo je podepsán pod obalem novinky „Ethereal Dominance“? Jeho práce se mi hodně líbí. Jak jste vůbec motiv na obal vybírali?

O grafiku se postaral náš dlouholetý přítel Jon Whiplash. Pracoval také na našich předchozích albech. Dali jsme mu pouze dvě pokyny: mělo to být sci-fi/hororové a ve stylu komiksu připomínajícího Philippa Druilleta. Okamžitě pochopil ducha alba. Výsledek perfektně ladí s hudbou – je hrozivý, futuristický a násilný.

Když se ještě podíváme do začátku…Co bylo vlastně tím prvním impulsem, že jste dali dohromady kapelu? A proč zrovna thrash black metal? Není to zrovna styl, který by vám získal velkou „slávu“.

Na začátku to bylo jednoduché: byli jsme přátelé, kteří spolu vyrůstali a hráli hudbu, kterou milovali. Byli jsme posedlí kapelami jako Kreator, Sadus, Massacra, Sepultura a Death. Thrash a death metal nám připadaly přirozené – jsou agresivní, rychlé, temné a silné. Nikdy jsme nečekali slávu, jen jsme chtěli vytvořit svůj vlastní příspěvek k této tradici.


Pocházíte z Francie a hrajete extrémní thrash/black metal. Naše čtenáře by určitě zajímalo, jak funguje vaše metalová scéna? Abych pravdu řekl, tak poslední dobou od vás slyším jen samé skvělé smečky (miluji SKELETHAL!). Znamená to, že je u vás v současnosti scéna hodně silná? Co třeba koncerty, kolik chodí lidí?

Francouzská scéna měla vždy legendární kapely jako Loudblast, Agressor, Massacra nebo Mercyless a dodnes je velmi silná a rozmanitá. Kapely jako naši blízcí přátelé Skelethal jsou důkazem energie a kvality, která z Francie vychází. Underground je živý, i když není vždy snadné najít slušná místa, kde hrát. Co se týče návštěvnosti, záleží to opravdu na městě a line-upu. Lidé na koncerty chodí, ale samozřejmě to není stejné číslo, jaké byste viděli v zemích jako Německo, kde je extrémní metal o něco populárnější.

Z vaší hudby je cítit, že jste ovlivněni jak americkou thrash death metalovou školou, tak i starými evropskými kapelami. Jak jste na tom jako fanoušci? Máte radši původní metal devadesátých let nebo čerpáte inspiraci i z nových desek? Pokud ano, zajímalo by mě, které smečky měly/mají na MORTAL SCEPTER největší vliv.

Obojí! Pokud byl riff zabijácký v roce 1985, je zabijácký i v roce 2025! Určitě nás ovlivňují klasici – německý thrash, raný americký death metal, Atheist, Pestilence, Sepultura a jejich Beneath the Remains –, ale posloucháme i novější kapely. Milujeme energii kapel jako Vektor nebo některé z moderní techno-thrashové scény. Inspirace přichází odkudkoli, pokud je upřímná a agresivní.

Co vlastně vy a koncerty obecně? Jste kapelou, která jezdí po koncertech, co to jenom jde nebo si hodně vybíráte? Máte nějaký sen, třeba skupinu, se kterou byste chtěli vyrazit na turné nebo festival, město, kde byste chtěli vystupovat?

Milujeme živá vystoupení, ale stále jsme trochu vybíraví, pokud jde o koncerty, které přijímáme. V posledních několika letech jsme byli spíše v ústraní, takže jsme neměli tolik příležitostí. Nicméně ty, které jsme odehráli, jsme si opravdu užili – například release party Necrowretch, předskakování Misanthrope a Loudblast nebo vystoupení na festivalu Anthems of Steel, abychom jmenovali alespoň některé. S vydáním alba Ethereal Dominance doufáme, že dostaneme více příležitostí vystoupit na pódiu. Upřímně řečeno, je příliš mnoho míst, kde bychom rádi hráli, než abychom je mohli všechny vyjmenovat! Mnoho festivalů vypadá zajímavě a rádi bychom prostřednictvím naší hudby objevovali nová města a země. Hrát v České republice, například na festivalu Thrash Nightmare, by bylo úžasné!

 

Co chystají MORTAL SCEPTER v nejbližších měsících? Pokud máš něco na srdci, co bys chtěl vzkázat fanouškům, labelům, promotérům, tak zde je prostor…

V současné době se soustředíme hlavně na propagaci alba Ethereal Dominance a na to, abychom ho co nejvíce dostali na pódia. Nechceme čekat dalších šest let na další album, ale zároveň nic neuspěcháme – naším cílem je vždycky být příště ještě lepší. Mezitím budeme tvrdě pracovat, hrát koncerty a posouvat Mortal Scepter vpřed. Promotéři, ozvěte se nám, máme velký zájem hrát kdekoli to bude možné! A všichni ostatní, neváhejte nám poslat zprávu a sdělit nám, co si myslíte o albu Ethereal Dominance – rádi vám odpovíme.

Jdu si vaši novou desku „Ethereal Dominance“ znovu pustit. Musím říct, že pro mě osobně se jedná v podstatě dokonalé thrash/black metalové dílo. Totální inferno. Přeji vám, aby se nahrávce dařilo, aby se dostala k co největšímu počtu fanoušků. Zaslouží si to. Přeji vám vše nejlepší i v osobním životě. Recenze/review - REEKMIND - Mired in the Reek of Grief (2025)

Na jedné ze svých toulek jsem se ocitl v hnisavé stoce pod naším městem. Sledoval jsem kalnou a špinavou vodu, kusy rozkládajících se těl, naslouchal jsem pištění rozzuřených krys. Tady, v místech, ve kterých sídlí démoni, v oblasti, která je pochmurná, chladná a temná, vynikl poslech debutového alba australských tmářů REEKMIND nejvíce. Jakoby se hudba prolínala s okamžikem, byla nasáklá chladem a temnotou. Mezi odpadem, s bolestí ve tváři, jsem znovu a znovu zapínal play.

Kapela hraje klasický death metal, ušpiněný sludge prvky a samozřejmě jej kombinuje i s doom metalem. Výsledný koktejl je velmi jedovatý, návykový a když jej ochutnáte, ocitnete se stejně jako já na pěkně temných a podivných místech. Novinka má v sobě cosi neklidného, zvláštního, neotřelého, co mě přitahuje a nutí k dalším poslechům. Koneckonců, jinak bych o téhle kapele ani nepsal. Nové album mě opravdu zaujalo. Protože je opravdové, reálné, uvěřitelné. Protože smrdí, jako stoka pod naším městem. 


Proti zvuku ani produkci nemám žádných námitek, snad jen malou připomínku - mohl by být možná trošku špinavější, chladnější. Berte to ale jenom jako připomínku starého psa. Jinak se mi líbí obal, celkové provedení. Ale hlavně hudba, která mě zcela pohltila. Chodil jsem se sluchátky na uších, sledoval to marné lidské snažení, honbu za majetkem a penězi. Jakoby nevěděli, že jednou stejně nakonec všichni zemřeme a rozplyneme se v nicotě. REEKMIND umí napsat a složit velmi dobré skladby, které mě chytnou, zaseknou do mě dráp a už mě nepustí. Nejvíc se mi ale líbí atmosféra celé nahrávky, která je náležitě pochmurná, zahalená do krvavé mlhy. Mám to nastavené tak, že si pokaždé, když objevím novou kapelu, sednu a nechám jejich hudbu jen tak působit. Potom si ji vezmu někam ven a když mě baví, tak o ní napíšu pár řádek. V "Mired in the Reek of Grief" je ale ještě něco navíc, jakási morbidní přitažlivost, kusy nahrubo nasekané tmy, zlo, které spalo v tichosti pod povrchem a najednou vyvřelo ven jako láva. Mrzí mě jen jediné, rád bych viděl kapelu naživo. Troufám si tvrdit, že na koncertě musí skladby vyniknout ještě více. Vše je zde reálné, opravdové, uvěřitelné, autentické. Pro mě osobně jsou to hodně důležité věci a tak mi nezbývá nic jiného, než vám nové album doporučit. Na jedné ze svých toulek jsem se ocitl v hnisavé stoce pod naším městem. Sledoval jsem kalnou a špinavou vodu, kusy rozkládajících se těl, naslouchal jsem pištění rozzuřených krys. Tady, v místech, ve kterých sídlí démoni, v oblasti, která je pochmurná, chladná a temná, vynikl poslech debutového alba australských tmářů REEKMIND nejvíce. Teď to již mohu potvrdit na sto procent a podepsat vlastní krví. Doom death sludgeové album, které se vám dostane až do morku kostí! Pach rozkládajících se těl ve stoce pod vaším městem!

On one of my wanderings, I found myself in a festering sewer under our city. I watched the murky and dirty water, pieces of decomposing bodies, I listened to the squealing of enraged rats. Here, in the places where demons reside, in an area that is gloomy, cold and dark, listening to the debut album of Australian darklings REEKMIND stood out the most. As if the music blended with the moment, it was soaked in cold and darkness. Among the garbage, with pain in my face, I turned on play again and again.

The band plays classic death metal, dirty sludge elements and of course combines it with doom metal. The resulting cocktail is very poisonous, addictive and when you taste it, you will find yourself in pretty dark and strange places, just like me. The new album has something uneasy, strange, fresh in it, which attracts me and forces me to listen to it again. After all, otherwise I wouldn't even be writing about this band. The new album really intrigued me. Because it's genuine, real, believable. Because it stinks, like the sewer under our city.


I have no objections to the sound or production, perhaps just a small comment - it could be a little dirtier, colder. But just take it as a reminder of an old dog. Otherwise, I like the cover, the overall performance. But mainly the music, which completely absorbed me. I walked around with headphones on, watching the futile human efforts, the pursuit of property and money. As if they didn't know that one day we will all die and disappear into nothingness. REEKMIND can write and compose very good songs that grab me, stick their claws into me and won't let me go. But what I like most is the atmosphere of the entire record, which is appropriately gloomy, shrouded in a bloody fog. I have it set up so that every time I discover a new band, I sit down and just let their music have an effect. Then I take it out somewhere and when I enjoy it, I write a few lines about it. But there is something more in "Mired in the Reek of Grief", a kind of morbid attraction, pieces of roughly chopped darkness, evil that slept quietly under the surface and suddenly erupted like lava. My only regret is that I would like to see the band live. I dare say that the songs must stand out even more at the concert. Everything here is real, genuine, believable, authentic. For me personally, these are very important things and so I have no choice but to recommend the new album to you. On one of my wanderings, I found myself in a festering sewer under our city. I watched the murky and dirty water, pieces of decomposing bodies, I listened to the squealing of enraged rats. Here, in places where demons reside, in an area that is gloomy, cold and dark, listening to the debut album of Australian darklings REEKMIND stood out the most. Now I can confirm it 100% and sign it with my own blood. A doom death sludge album that will get to your bones! The smell of decomposing bodies in the sewers under your city!

Jsou nahrávky, okolo kterých chodím opatrně. Jako šelma kolem svojí kořisti. Čekám na vhodnou příležitost, abych mohl zaútočit. Rozuměj začít s poslechem. Thrash metal a jeho přidružené styly kdysi byly mým základem, na kterém jsem začínal. Určitě pamatujete doby, kdy světu vládly smečky jako HEATHEN, TOXIK, AGENT STEEL, ARTILLERY, HOLY TERROR, SECRED REICH, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, TESTAMENT, KIND DIAMOND. Kopíroval jsem tenkrát tisíce kazet, sedával dlouhé hodiny u reproduktorů a diskutoval o muzice. 

Z osmdesátých a devadesátých let vychází při své tvorbě i Charly Steinhauer, který je v současnosti jediným členem německých PARADOX. Člověk by čekal, že dostane nějaké dobře zahrané retro. Nenechte se ale mýlit. Tenhle maniak sice čerpá ze starých dobrých časů, ale nebojí se i nových postupů. Lehce experimentuje, je progresivní a novinka "Mysterium" je tak velmi svěžím, neotřelým a zajímavým albem. Čekal jsem další obyčejné retro album v řadě a místo toho dostal hudbu, která rozjitřila moji fantazii a vymáchala mi obličej v kaluži plné krve. Přesně takhle by to mělo vypadat, přesně takhle to mám rád. 

Skladby chtějí čas, klid a ticho. Jedná se o velmi propracovanou, dobře zvukově ošetřenou záležitost. PARADOX umějí být suroví a nekompromisní, ale základem jsou naléhavé melodie. U muziky dám samozřejmě hodně i na hlas a musím rovnou napsat, že Charly Steinhauer odvedl velmi dobrou práci i v této oblasti. Hudba vždycky byla, je a vždy bude o emocích. Těch se povedlo narvat do téhle nahrávky velké množství. Hrozně mě baví jen tak chodit ulicemi, se sluchátky na uších, sledovat to marné lidské snažení, stát ve stínu, být tichým svědomím. Cítím zde z jednotlivých nápadů velkou sílu, takový ten heavy efekt, drive a energii. Určitě to znáte. Jednoduše si sednete a necháte na sebe album působit. Už jsem starý pes, tak si hodně vybírám a hudba mě musí smést z povrchu zemského, zničit mě, dostat se mi pod kůži i do podvědomí. Musí ve mě probudit myšlenky, unést mě do svého světa. Tohle všechno PARADOX a Charly Steinhauer umějí na výbornou. Netuším, kdy se to stane, kdy dochází ke vzájemnému přenosu, kdy se vkrade nahrávka i do mé diskografie, ale u "Mysterium" to několik týdnů trvalo. Stále objevuji nové pasáže, temné kouty, chladné chvilky poezie. Zajímavá je ještě jedna věc. Dnes už dávno poslouchám spíše extrémnější muziku, ale tohle album mě něčím stále přitahuje. Je v něm obsažen takový zvláštní neklid, aura, říkejte si tomu jak chcete. Zkrátka a dobře, v době, kdy je spousta kapel umělých, nudných a prázdných, přichází tenhle maniak s deskou, která řeže tou správnou stranou nože. Možná nebude vyhovovat každému, ale mě sedla přesně do vkusu, nálady a přikovala mě na zeď. Progresivní, thrash power speed heavy metalové album, které vás roztrhá na kusy! Mocná, majestátní, upřímná a autentická definice metalu, která vás zasáhne přímo do srdce!

Thrash metal and its associated styles were once my foundation, where I started out. You surely remember the days when bands like HEATHEN, TOXIK, AGENT STEEL, ARTILLERY, HOLY TERROR, SECRED REICH, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, TESTAMENT, and KIND DIAMOND ruled the world. Back then, I copied thousands of cassettes, sat for hours in front of the speakers, and discussed music. 

Charly Steinhauer, currently the only member of the German band PARADOX, also draws on the 1980s and 1990s in his work. One would expect to get some well-played retro music. But don't be fooled. This maniac draws on the good old days, but he's not afraid of new approaches. He experiments lightly, is progressive, and his new album "Mysterium" is a very fresh, original, and interesting album. I was expecting another ordinary retro album in a row, but instead I got music that stirred my imagination and splashed my face in a pool of blood. This is exactly how it should be, this is exactly how I like it. 


The songs require time, peace, and quiet. It is a very sophisticated, well-produced piece of work. PARADOX can be raw and uncompromising, but urgent melodies are at the core. Of course, I also value vocals highly in music, and I must say that Charly Steinhauer did a very good job in this area as well. Music has always been, is, and always will be about emotions. They managed to cram a lot of them into this recording. I really enjoy just walking the streets with headphones on, watching the futile human efforts, standing in the shadows, being a silent conscience. I feel great power in the individual ideas here, that kind of heavy effect, drive, and energy. I'm sure you know what I mean. You just sit down and let the album work its magic on you. I'm an old dog now, so I'm very selective, and music has to sweep me off my feet, destroy me, get under my skin and into my subconscious. It has to awaken thoughts in me, carry me away into its world. PARADOX and Charly Steinhauer do all this perfectly. I have no idea when it happens, when the mutual transfer takes place, when the recording creeps into my discography, but with "Mysterium" it took several weeks. I am still discovering new passages, dark corners, cold moments of poetry. There is one more interesting thing. Today, I listen to more extreme music, but this album still attracts me in some way. It contains a strange restlessness, an aura, call it what you will. In short, at a time when many bands are artificial, boring, and empty, this maniac comes along with an album that cuts with the right side of the knife. It may not suit everyone, but it suited my taste and mood perfectly and nailed me to the wall. A progressive, thrash power speed heavy metal album that will tear you to pieces! A powerful, majestic, honest, and authentic definition of metal that will strike you right in the heart!
