CATATOMB - Flesh is Hell

Ne, jasně, není to dokonalá nahrávka. Jenže, nejde to, mě nové EP prostě a jednoduše baví.

Asphyx says:

I’ve been meeting with demons since the late 1980s. We sit down underground, in the old catacombs, and talk at length about pain, darkness, suffering, and the evil world that surrounds us. As we do so, we listen to dirty, raw, and endlessly cold music. We dance on our own graves. We’ll never be anyone else it’s like a curse, like an addiction. Today, as I was descending, the clouds in the sky were the color of blood and touched the ground. Pieces of ice coursed through my veins, because we were all listening to the new EP by the Czech death metal band CATATOMB.

If you look at the history of this band whose sole member is currently Sebastian you’ll find that they have two full-length albums and two EPs to their credit. This one fell into my hands, and to tell you the truth, I knew from the very first listen that we were cut from the same cloth. I’ve always loved classic, grimy death metal with that stinky vibe. I admit, I was immediately caught in the tight web of sharp melodies, raw screams, and programmed drums but above all, the deathly morbid atmosphere.

We remember our friends who are no longer with us. We gradually turn up the volume on the player, right up to the very edge of pain. Blood flows from our ears, we nod our heads in unison to the brilliant sound (which Sebastian created himself), and we always take great pleasure in looking at the demonic cover art (yes, perhaps one of us is sitting on the throne). It’s signed by Noah Zark. But these are all just formalities necessary for me to write about the recording at all, but little more than that. For us, the music itself was, is, and always will be what matters most. “Flesh is Hell” is packed to the brim with old, classic, traditional ideas that will be appreciated mainly by orthodox fans of the genre a group to which I, of course, proudly belong. I like that CATATOMB are genuine, real, and sincere; that they play from the heart; and that I can completely trust them with all their exhumations of cursed graves. Authenticity that’s what this is all about. No, sure, it’s not a perfect recording. The sound could certainly use some work, and I’ve heard some of the motifs somewhere before, but that’s true of pretty much every band these days. But the thing is, I love all those pitch-black, mysterious I wouldn’t hesitate to call them ritually magical moments; the overall mood of the EP is bloodily captivating. Coffin lids are cracking open, demons are smiling which, to me, is always proof that the music is good. I’m swaying to the beat, screaming into the darkness, rummaging through old, mangy bones, shrouded in a bloody mist. It looks like everything is just fine. Sebastian is in top form this year. No wonder he’s a loyal member of the gravediggers’ guild. I wanted to be more critical; I wanted to be harsher. But I just can’t I simply enjoy this new EP. It cuts into me, burns me, tears me apart from the inside. It reminds me of encountering old corpses in an advanced state of decomposition. Death metal steeped in rot, cold, and endless darkness that will bury you alive! A record that will tear you apart from the inside!
