Interview with death metal band from Poland - CHAINSWORD.

Ave CHAINSWORD! Greetings to the Warsaw underworld. When I first saw the cover art for your album "Chapter XII" this year, I immediately thought that you were inspired by the war board game Warhammer 40k. Is that so? This game is set in a fictional sci-fi universe. How did this idea come about and how does it relate to the music on the release?

Hail Satan (and all other pleasantries)! This time we went all in with 40k themes – this is a concept EP about World Eaters chapter of Chaos Space Marines – the most unhinged bunch of the whole setting! And with regards to music – we just tried our best to make it sound... bloody!


I have to say right off the bat that the new album is really hilarious. Musically, you have loosely followed the previous album. In a previous interview you revealed that you had a little trouble with the line-up. If I'm not mistaken, that's a thing of the past. I understand that you have chosen the same recording process? I always wonder about that. How does CHAINSWORD create new songs? I'm interested in the process.

The line up remained as it was on Born Triumphant, fortunately, but this time the recording process was more classic – both drums and all string instruments were recorded in Sound of Records studios in Warsaw, with only vocals and some guitar solos being done in Primate 666 studio – which is just a fancy name for our rehealsal space! Songs for this EP were made in 3 diffrent ways – one as a cooperation during jams, two were brought complete by our bass player, and with last two me and Sarin just met up in our den, recorded some riffs and drums, then bashed them around some in Reaper. Simplicity itself!

The sound, that's always what it's about. Especially in death metal. Where did you record "Chaptes XII" and who is responsible for the mixing and mastering? Was it Haldor Grunberg like last time? The new one seems to me more raw, colder, the war atmosphere stands out better, if you understand me.

It was Haldor, as always, he recently started his own thing (aforementioned Sound of Records) with Mikołaj Kiciak, who was also responsible for drum recording on Born Triumphant – we keep it all in our little dysfunctional family! Recording bass and guitars in studio (and not reamping them) really gave us the edge this time, it was definitely worth the extra effort!


I don't have the lyrics so I'll ask. Judging by the song titles, these are classic war themes. Who is the author? What sources did you draw from? Does the current situation, when the front line is more or less already a short distance from Poland (and actually from the Czech Republic), influence you in any way?

Other than the general vibe of the world coming apart – not really. Lyrics on this one are pure science fiction escapism into the world of larger-than-life ULTRA BLOODSHED. Like... Gorechild is about a huge battleaxe that demands of its owner to be fed blood – daily!

When I started listening to your new album, I just saw a documentary about Vietnam. It must have been crazy, fighting in the jungle, in the dark. You have one very good song (Good Mourning, Vietnam), which is also inspired by that war. How did that idea come about? Did you study history? Do you do any fact-checking? When I once interviewed HAIL OF BULLETS, they told me that a history professor came to their concert and started discussing with them that they were misinterpreting some topics.

We try to stay close to facts when we sing about real events (same thing with 40k, but in that case warpfuckery is a thing and two or more timelines can be true at the same time and no one bats an eye). None of us is a professional historian, but we are very passionate about it and consume a lot of war books and films. Was that a Netflix documentary with music by Trent Reznor? That one was truly something!


Our countries have a very similar history. Both were under Russian influence for many years. I, for one, still find out to this day how many lies we were told in school. It was similar with music. New bands and music in general came to us several years after the release. I still supplement my education to this day. How are death metal bands actually perceived in Poland? In our country it's still a deep underground, which the majority of society takes as something extreme, crazy, evil. How is it in your country?

Most people in our country know who Nergal is, but mostly because of his fight against catholic church , not his music. I would dare to say that being mostly atheist country you Czechs have it better! I think that to this day extreme polish bands are still more popular abroad than on home turf – but we have a lot of active young people in the scene, so my hopes remain high!

I'm an old dog, who started with death metal as a young boy at the turn of the 80s and 90s. One of the first death metal bands I heard and still admire to this day is VADER. But the Polish scene today is huge and there are really a lot of bands. There are only a few in the Czech Republic. What do you explain that death metal and black metal have such a strong position in your country? What about concerts, promoters, festivals, labels? From the outside it looks like you are a death metal paradise! Is that true?

It is more of a hellscape of competition for a small-ish band like us, but as a metal fan – yes! It is paradise! I think that the reason behind the abundance of metal bands in Poland is that we are still ANGRY at so many things! Best acts are still being made in Silesia, which is the part of Poland most affected by the switch from industial to service based economy – when you lose your job at the mine and have no real perspectives for life you get kinda pissed off and playing loud music with your mates seems like a good idea! Opressive postindustrial architecture also helps!


Everybody started somehow. Who was your role model? Do you have any formal musical training? What was the first gig you went to? And what was your first gig as a musician? Please reminisce for us...

Me personally – I have some formal musical education in a jazz/pop school, but I never completed it. I could play a jazz gig at gunpoint, but I doubt it would please anyone! The 1st gig ever that I attended was in Stodoła club in Warsaw, and it was by the famous polish pop-punk band Pidżama Porno (there, I said it, I AM A POSER!). I broke my glasses on that night, and for some time after I wore half of one of the lenses, it was kept on by a safety pin... Until one of my teachers called my mom and asked WHAT THE HELL?! And the first gig I played was... I frankly can't remember! Probably some dreadful high school talend show or something like that...

You're from Warsaw. It's a big city, with lots of clubs, pubs. Would you recommend any? When I come to your place, where should I go for good metal and beer? What about some local bands that you think are good, can you recommend them to us?

Club wise – 2koła, Voodoo, Chmury, Hydrozagadka and Mechanik for the smaller gigs, Proxima Stodoła and Progresja for the bigger ones – it seems that there are a lot of them, but then you remember that Warsaw is home for around 3 million people and then it suddenly is not so much! As for local bands – man, there are so many! From our own genre – Clairvoyance, Species, RIP, Abominated , Hexenaltar, the list goes on... And for the other sounds – check out Wij and Las Trumien and then let spotify suggest you more!


What does death metal and music in general mean to you? Is it a lifestyle? A hobby? You can look at this issue from different angles and feel free to get philosophical. I'd be interested in your perspective as a musician.

I get withdrawal syndrome when I don't play show for more than 3 weeks, soooo... Definitely a lifestyle. I work as a session musician and drum teacher too! And death metal gives me that feeling of power that other genres lack, it was coined as MURDERBONER by Doom Eternal (the video game) fans!

What direction do you want CHAINSWORD to take in the future? Do you have a benchmark, a goal you want to achieve? Is it maybe a tour with a big famous band? Or a strong label?

Chainsword will hopefully provide you all with more of the same (Old School Death Metal) but better each time, for years to come! And for now – we plan to tour as much as we can when we can one of our band members is becoming a father real soon, but it will hold us back only for couple of months – and it's not me saying it – its the mother! So next year you can expect us in or near your city if you happen to live in Europe, time will tell if we will manage to worm our way into the lineup of some mighty tour or festivals – our hopes are up!

 

And what are you planning in the next few months? If you have a message for fans, for promoters, labels, here's the space...

We will probably play some holiday shows, then také some time to regroup, plot a tour or two for 2026, jam out some new tunes to maybe storm the world with another EP, this time on Slaanesh or the Orks... We get a ton of messages from people all around the world who listen to our stuff while painting their armies or working out at the gym, this is AWESOME – keep them coming! And for promoters and labels – we are EAGER FOR CONQUEST – just be patient with us as we are really just a bunch of nerds and degenerates and it sometimes takes us time to bash our heads together and form an educated response!

Ave CHAINSWORD! Zdravím do varšavského podsvětí. Když jsem poprvé viděl obal k vašemu letošnímu albu „Chapter XII“, ihned mě napadlo, že jste se nechali inspirovat válečnou stolní hrou Warhammer 40k. Je tomu tak? Tahle hra je zasazená do fiktivního sci-fi vesmíru. Jak tento nápad vznikl a jak souvisí s hudbou na novince?

Sláva Satanovi (a všem ostatním příjemnostem)! Tentokrát jsme se vrhli po hlavě do témat 40k – jedná se o koncepční EP o kapitole World Eaters z Chaos Space Marines – nejvyšinutější skupině z celého prostředí! A co se týče hudby – snažili jsme se, aby zněla co nejkrvavěji!


Musím rovnou dodat, že nové album je opravdu povedené. Hudebně jste volně navázali na předchozí album. V minulém rozhovoru si nám prozradil, že jste měli menší problémy se sestavou. Jestli se nepletu, tak tohle je už dávno minulostí. Chápu to dobře, že jste zvolili stejný postup nahrávání? Tohle mě vždycky zajímá. Jak tvoří CHAINSWORD nové skladby? Zajímá mě samotný proces.

Sestava zůstala stejná jako na albu Born Triumphant, naštěstí, ale tentokrát byl proces nahrávání klasičtější – bicí i všechny strunné nástroje byly nahrány ve studiu Sound of Records ve Varšavě, pouze vokály a některé kytarová sóla byla nahrána ve studiu Primate 666 – což je jen honosný název pro naši zkušebnu! Skladby pro toto EP vznikly třemi různými způsoby – jedna vznikla jako spolupráce během jamování, dvě přinesl hotové náš basák a poslední dvě jsme se Sarinem nahráli v naší dílně, kde jsme nahráli několik riffů a bicí a pak je trochu upravili v Reaperu. Jednoduché jako facka!

Zvuk, o ten jde vždycky. U death metalu obzvlášť. Kde jste „Chaptes XII“ nahrávali a kdo je podepsán pod mixem a masteringem? Byl to Haldor Grunberg jako minule? Novinka mi připadá syrovější, chladnější, lépe na ní vyniká válečná atmosféra, jestli mi rozumíš.

Byl to jako vždy Haldor, který nedávno založil vlastní firmu (výše zmíněnou Sound of Records) s Mikołajem Kiciakem, který byl také zodpovědný za nahrávání bicích na albu Born Triumphant – všechno si necháváme v naší malé dysfunkční rodině! Nahrávání basy a kytar ve studiu (a ne jejich reamping) nám tentokrát opravdu dalo výhodu, rozhodně to stálo za tu námahu navíc!


Nemám k dispozici texty a tak se zeptám. Podle názvů skladeb se jedná o klasická válečná témata. Kdo je jejich autorem? Z jakých zdrojů jste čerpali? Ovlivňuje vás nějakým způsobem i současná situace, kdy je fronta víceméně již kousek od Polska (a vlastně i od České republiky)?

Kromě obecného pocitu, že se svět rozpadá – ne, vlastně ne. Texty na této desce jsou čistým sci-fi únikem do světa nadpřirozeného ULTRA BLOODSHED. Například... Gorechild je o obrovské bojové sekeře která od svého majitele vyžaduje, aby ji každý den krmil krví!

Když jsem začal poslouchat vaše nové album, zrovna jsem viděl jeden dokument o Vietnamu. Muselo to být šílené, bojovat v džungli, ve tmě. Vy máte, jednu velmi povedenou skladbu (Good Mourning, Vietnam), která je touto válkou také inspirována. Jak tento nápad vlastně vznikl? Studovali jste historii? Ověřujete si třeba nějak fakta? Když jsem kdysi dělal rozhovor s HAIL OF BULLETS, tak ti mi říkali, že za nimi přišel na koncert profesor historie a začal s nimi diskutovat, že si nějaká témata vykládají špatně.

Snažíme se držet faktů, když zpíváme o skutečných událostech (stejně jako v případě 40k, ale v tom případě jsou warpfuckery běžná věc a dvě nebo více časových os mohou být pravdivé zároveň a nikdo se nad tím nepozastaví). Nikdo z nás není profesionální historik, ale velmi nás to zajímá a čteme spoustu knih a sledujeme filmy o válkách. Byl to dokument na Netflixu s hudbou Trenta Reznora? Ten byl opravdu něco!


Naše země mají velmi podobnou historii. Obě byly dlouhé roky pod ruským vlivem. Já třeba dodnes zjišťuji, kolik lží nám ve školách říkali. Podobné to bylo s hudbou. Nové kapely i muzika všeobecně se k nám dostávaly několik let po vydání. Dodnes si doplňuji vzdělání. Jak jsou vlastně death metalové kapely vnímány v Polsku? U nás je to pořád hluboký underground, který většinová společnost bere jako něco extrémního, šíleného, ďábelského. Jak je tomu u vás?

Většina lidí v naší zemi ví, kdo je Nergal, ale hlavně kvůli jeho boji proti katolické církvi, ne kvůli jeho hudbě. Troufám si říct, že jako převážně ateistická země jste na tom vy Češi lépe! Myslím, že extrémní polské kapely jsou dodnes populárnější v zahraničí než doma – ale v naší scéně je spousta aktivních mladých lidí, takže moje naděje zůstávají vysoké!

Jsem už starý pes, který s death metalem začínal jako mladý kluk na přelomu osmdesátých a devadesátých let minulého století. Jednou z prvních death metalových kapel, kterou jsem slyšel a dodnes ji obdivuji, jsou VADER. Polská scéna je dnes ale obrovská a kapel je opravdu spousta. U nás v Čechách je jich jen několik. Čím si to vysvětluješ, že zrovna death metal a black metal mají u vás tak silnou pozici? Co třeba koncerty, promotéři, festivaly, labely? Takhle od nás zvenku to vypadá, že jste death metalový ráj! Je to pravda?

Pro malou kapelu, jako jsme my, je to spíš peklo konkurence, ale jako metalový fanoušek – ano! Je to ráj! Myslím, že důvodem, proč je v Polsku tolik metalových kapel, je to, že jsme stále NAŠTVANÍ na spoustu věcí! Nejlepší kapely stále vznikají ve Slezsku, které je částí Polska nejvíce zasaženou přechodem od průmyslu k ekonomice založené na službách – když přijdeš o práci v dole a nemáš žádné reálné perspektivy do života, jsi trochu naštvaný a hrát hlasitou hudbu s kamarády se zdá jako dobrý nápad! Pomáhá tomu i tísnivá postindustriální architektura!


Každý nějak začínal. Kdo byl tvým vzorem? Máš nějaké oficiální hudební vzdělání? Jaký si navštívil první koncert? A jaké bylo tvoje první vystoupení jako muzikanta? Zavzpomínej pro nás prosím…

Já osobně mám nějaké formální hudební vzdělání z jazzové/popové školy, ale nikdy jsem ho nedokončil. Pod nátlakem bych mohl zahrát jazzový koncert, ale pochybuji, že by to někomu udělalo radost! První koncert, na kterém jsem byl, se konal v klubu Stodoła ve Varšavě a vystupovala na něm slavná polská pop-punková kapela Pidżama Porno (tak, řekl jsem to, JSEM POZÉR!). Tu noc jsem si rozbil brýle a nějakou dobu jsem nosil polovinu jedné čočky, která byla připevněná spínacím špendlíkem... Dokud jeden z mých učitelů nezavolal mé mámě a nezeptal se, CO TO K SAKRU JE?! A první koncert, na kterém jsem hrál, byl... Upřímně řečeno, nevzpomínám si! Pravděpodobně nějaká příšerná talentová show na střední škole nebo něco podobného...

Jste z Varšavy. To je velké město, se spoustou klubů, hospod. Doporučil bys nám nějaké? Když k vám přijedu, kam bych měl zajít na dobrý metal a pivo? A co nějaké místní kapely, které považuješ za dobré, doporučíš nám je prosím?

Co se klubů týče – 2koła, Voodoo, Chmury, Hydrozagadka a Mechanik pro menší koncerty, Proxima Stodoła a Progresja pro ty větší – zdá se, že jich je spousta, ale pak si uvědomíte, že Varšava je domovem pro asi 3 miliony lidí, a najednou to zase není tolik! Co se týče místních kapel – je jich tolik! Z našeho žánru – Clairvoyance, Species, RIP, Abominated, Hexenaltar, seznam pokračuje... A pokud jde o jiné styly – poslechněte si Wij a Las Trumien a pak nechte Spotify, ať vám navrhne další!


Co pro tebe znamená death metal a hudba celkově? Je to životní styl? Koníček? Můžeš se na tuhle problematiku podívat z různých úhlů a klidně se pusť i do filozofických úvah. Zajímal by mě tvůj pohled muzikanta.

Když nehraju déle než 3 týdny, dostanu abstinenční příznaky, takže... Je to rozhodně životní styl. Pracuju jako studiový muzikant a taky učím hru na bicí! A death metal mi dává ten pocit síly, který jiným žánrům chybí. Fanoušci videohry Doom Eternal mu dali přezdívku MURDERBONER!

Jakým směrem se chtějí CHAINSWORD ubírat v budoucnu? Máte nějakou metu, cíl, kterých chcete dosáhnout? Je to třeba turné s velkou slavnou kapelou? Nebo silný label?

Chainsword vám snad v následujících letech přinese více toho samého (old school death metal), ale pokaždé v lepší kvalitě! A prozatím plánujeme koncertovat, jak jen to půjde, když to půjde. Jeden z členů naší kapely se brzy stane otcem, ale to nás zdrží jen na pár měsíců – a to neříkám já, ale matka! Takže příští rok nás můžete očekávat ve vašem městě nebo v jeho blízkosti, pokud žijete v Evropě. Čas ukáže, zda se nám podaří proklouznout do line-upu nějakého velkého turné nebo festivalu – doufáme v to!

 

A co chystáte v nejbližších měsících? Pokud máš nějaký vzkaz pro fanoušky, pro promotéry, labely, tak zde je prostor…

Pravděpodobně odehrajeme několik vánočních koncertů, pak si dáme chvíli pauzu, naplánujeme jedno nebo dvě turné na rok 2026, nahrajeme pár nových skladeb a možná vydáme další EP, tentokrát o Slaaneshovi nebo Orcích... Dostáváme spoustu zpráv od lidí z celého světa, kteří poslouchají naši hudbu, zatímco malují své armády nebo cvičí v posilovně, což je ÚŽASNÉ – pokračujte v tom! A pro promotéry a vydavatelství – jsme HNANÍ PO VÍTĚZSTVÍ – buďte s námi trpěliví, protože jsme vlastně jen banda nerdů a degenerátů a někdy nám trvá, než se domluvíme a vymyslíme fundovanou odpověď!

Děkuji moc za rozhovor i za vaši muziku. Moc si toho vážím. Jdu si znovu pustit „Chapter XII“. Jedná se opravdu o skvělé válečné death metalové album! Ať se vám daří i v soukromých životech!

DEATH KOMMANDER - Never to Grow Old

Ve vnitřnostech se mi usadil strach. Nemohl jsem spát. Nad bojištěm bylo ticho, bolestivé kruté ticho. Mrtvoly ze včerejšího dne již dávno obě strany uklidily. Leží teď vyskládané vedle sebe a čekají na identifikaci. Je mezi nimi spousta mých kamarádů. Budu zítra mezi nimi? Vrátím se domů v plechové truhle? Nebo mi ustřelí nohu a budu bojovat dál? Napětí před dalším útokem. Atmosféra plná strachu, adrenalinu i nenávisti. Políbím kříž, co nosím jako amulet stále s sebou a pevně sevřu v rukou zbraň. Je chladná jako bolest v mém srdci.

V první světové válce bojoval i můj praděda. Na straně Rakouska - Uherska. Kdysi dávno jsem našel několik jeho deníků. Vzpomněl jsem si na ně právě teď, když jsem začal poslouchat nové album válečné kapely DEATH KOMMANDER. Těmto death metalovým bojovníkům jsme se věnovali již několikrát. Máme i zajímavý rozhovor, na vše naleznete odkazy dole pod dnešní recenzí. A co si myslím o nové nahrávce? Pro mě osobně je to opět srdcová záležitost. Death metal zahraný s elegancí a pradávnou touhou zabíjet. S melodiemi, které jsou chladné jako ráno před bitvou. Surovost a temnota se ukrývá v našich prokletých duších. Stačí se dojít podívat na hřbitov padlých vojáků. Historie se opakuje s krutou pravidelností. 


Rozhodně nesmím zapomenout na masivní, dobře čitelný a zároveň drásavý zvuk. Přesně takhle bych si to představoval. Rukopis kapely je samozřejmě volně inspirovaný BOLT THROWER (podobně jako třeba u kapel typu ASPHYX, HAIL OF BULLETS, DECAYING, JUST BEFORE DAWN, CHAINSWOOD, SHRAPNEL STORM, ARCHENVATER, ENTRENCHMENT, SCALPTURE), ale pánové přidávají navíc velké množství svých nápadů a základní myšlenky nadále rozvíjejí směrem, který se mi osobně velmi líbí. Jednotlivé skladby v sobě mají takový ten pradávný drive, sílu, nakumulovaný vztek i heavy efekt. Nové album "Never to Grow Old" je velmi dobře napsané, složené. Valí se dopředu jako dobře seřízený stroj na zabíjení. Zahynete pod pásy tanku, který vám rozdrtí kosti. Budete nabodnuti na bodáky, ustřelí vám kus těla dělem. Způsobů jakými můžete zemřít ve válce, je velké množství. Stačí jenom zapnout play, přidat postupně hlasitost a nechat si vyprávět příběhy plné vášně, bolesti a utrpení. Obyčejní vojáci to vždycky nakonec odnesou nejvíc. Jsou jen číslem v davu, položkou odepsanou během několika momentů útoku. Jako bych opravdu seděl v zákopu a čekal na povel k zabíjení. Byl jsem zrovna ve sklepě, četl si zaprášené dopisy z vojny, potom se podíval na jeden starý černobílý dokument a pak si pustil tohle album. Všechno se mi tak nějak podvědomě spojilo v jedno. V temný celek, který ve mě probudil spoustu různých emocí. Pro mě o tom vždycky dobrá hudba byla. Musí ve mě vyvolat nějakou reakci, zasáhnout mě do srdce i přímo na solar plexus. DEATH KOMMANDER se to opět povedlo. Přenesli mě po časové ose zpět, nechali mě pochodovat přímo na smrt. Pokud máte tenhle styl smrtícího kovu rádi, rozhodně tuhle smečku nepřehlédněte. Hraje totiž opravdově, reálně, autenticky. Ve vnitřnostech se mi usadil strach. Nemohl jsem spát. Nad bojištěm bylo ticho, bolestivé kruté ticho. Temný a chladný, válečný death metalový buldozer, který rozdrtí všechny vaše kosti! Pochoduj nebo zemři!

Fear settled in my gut. I couldn't sleep. There was silence over the battlefield, a painful, cruel silence. The corpses of yesterday had long since been cleaned up by both sides. They now lie piled side by side, waiting to be identified. Among them are many of my friends. Will I be among them tomorrow? Will I come home in a tin box? Or will I get my leg blown off and keep fighting? Tension before the next attack. An atmosphere of fear, adrenaline and hatred. My great-grandfather fought in World War I. On the side of Austria-Hungary. A long time ago, I found some of his diaries. I remembered them just now when I started listening to the new album of the war band DEATH KOMMANDER. We have covered these death metal warriors several times. We also have an interesting interview, all of which you can find links to below today's review. And what do I think about the new record? For me personally, it's again a matter of the heart. Death metal played with elegance and an ancient desire to kill. With melodies that are as cold as the morning before a battle. The rawness and darkness lurking in our damned souls. Just go to the cemetery of the fallen soldiers. History repeats itself with cruel regularity. 


I must not forget the massive, clear and at the same time thrilling sound. That's exactly how I'd like it to sound. The band's handwriting is of course loosely inspired by BOLT THROWER (similarly to bands like ASPHYX, HAIL OF BULLETS, DECAYING, JUST BEFORE DAWN, CHAINSWOOD, SHRAPNEL STORM, ARCHENVATER, ENTRENCHMENT, SCALPTURE), but the gentlemen add a lot of their own ideas and continue to develop the basic ideas in a direction that I personally like a lot. The individual tracks have that ancient drive, power, accumulated anger and heavy effect. The new album "Never to Grow Old" is very well written, composed. It rolls forward like a well-tuned killing machine. You'll die under the tracks of a tank that will crush your bones. You'll be impaled on bayonets, have a chunk of your body blown off with a cannon. The ways in which you can die in war are many. All you have to do is turn on the play, turn up the volume, and let the stories of passion, pain and suffering be told. Ordinary soldiers always get the worst of it in the end. They're just a number in the crowd, an item written off in a few moments of attack. It's like I'm really sitting in a trench waiting for the kill order. I was just in the basement, reading dusty letters from the war, then watched an old black and white documentary, then put on this album. It all sort of subconsciously came together. A dark whole that brought out a lot of different emotions in me. For me, that's what good music has always been about. It has to evoke some kind of reaction in me, hit me in the heart and directly on the solar plexus. DEATH KOMMANDER has done it again. They transported me back along the timeline, had me marching straight to my death. If you like this style of death metal, definitely don't overlook this pack. Because they play real, real, authentic. Fear settled in my gut. I couldn't sleep. There was a silence over the battlefield, a painful, cruel silence. Dark and cold, a wartime death metal bulldozer that will crush all your bones! March or die!

Nad bojištěm se válí krvavá mlha. Křik raněných je neustále přerušován dalšími a dalšími střelami. Bůh války se usmívá. Hromady mrtvol, vše hoří a dostane se ti navěky do hlavy. Ještě dlouho potom, co se vrátíš domů, se ti budou vracet děsivé noční můry. Budou v nich vystupovat šílené bestie bez tváří. S uhořelými končetinami a vyhřezlými vnitřnostmi. Válka je vždy svinstvo a odnesou ji nejvíce ti obyčejní pěšáci beze jména. Je potřeba na to stále upozorňovat, obzvláště teď, když se bojuje kousek od nás.

Polským CHAINSWORD se věnuji od jejich počátků. Jedná se totiž přesně o kapelu, která dokáže uvěřitelně navodit atmosféru bojiště. Jako prostředek k tomu volí valivý, syrový a chladný death metal. I u nového EP jsem přímo v zákopech ve Vietnamu. Umírám a znovu se rodím. A kolem mě umírají desítky kamarádů. 


Jakoby znovu povstaly prokletí bojovníci temnoty. Přijeli se pomstít, vypálit i vaše město, zasypat vás bombami. Za všechnu tu bolest, za ztracené životy, za prokletou smrt. Sami asi slyšíte, že se jedná o styl smrtícího kovu, který hrají třeba takoví BOLT THROWER, DEATH KOMMANDER, SHRAPNEL STORM, DECAYING, JUST BEFORE DAWN, SCALPTURE, MEMORIAM. Pro mě je vždy nejvíce důležité, a neustále to opakuji, abych hudbě věřil, aby se mi dostala do hlavy, zůstala tam a měl jsem chuť se k ní vracet. Nové EP "Chapter XII" je přesně tím druhem nahrávky, po které budete mít chuť se podívat na nějaký dobrý válečný dokument. Koneckonců, v dnešní době nemusíte chodit daleko, stačí sledovat zprávy. Mrazivé mleodie se zde potkávají se surovými rytmy, to vše zabalaené do masivního a dobře čitelného zvuku, se stylovým obalem (motiv mi připomíná Warhammer 40k). Poláci pevně věří tomu, co hrají a je to na jejich novince znát. Vždycky říkám, že mám rád muziku, kterou hrají srdcaři pro srdcaře. To zde platí na sto procent, plus dostanete bonus navíc v podobě syrových a morbidních zážitků. CHAINSWORD sice nepřinášejí do podzemí nic nového, ale ani letos se nejedná jen o dobře odvedené řemeslo. Naopak, dostanete navíc podmanivě temnou a děsivou atmosféru. Ucítíte pach umírajích, nasajete pochmurné nálady ze zákopů. Uslyšíte rozkazy vedoucí k dalšímu a dalšímu zabíjení. Možná zahynete pod palbou, možná ale přežijete, abyste byli nadále jenom číslem v davu. Nad bojištěm se válí krvavá mlha. Křik raněných je neustále přerušován dalšími a dalšími střelami. A bloody mist rolls over the battlefield. The screams of the wounded are constantly interrupted by more and more shots. The God of War is smiling. Piles of corpses, everything is burning, and it goes to your head forever. Long after you return home, you'll have terrifying nightmares. They'll feature crazy, faceless beasts. with burnt limbs and guts burnt out. War is always a mess, and it's the common foot soldiers with no name who take it the hardest. We need to keep reminding ourselves of that, especially now that it's being fought not far from us.

I've been involved with the Polish CHAINSWORD since the beginning. They are exactly the kind of band that can make the atmosphere of the battlefield believable. They choose rolling, raw and cold death metal as a means to do so. Even with the new EP, I'm right in the trenches in Vietnam. I'm dying and being born again. And dozens of my friends are dying around me. 


It is as if the cursed warriors of darkness have risen again. They have come to take revenge, to burn your city, to bomb you. For all the pain, for all the lives lost, for the cursed death. You can probably hear for yourself that this is the style of death metal played by the likes of BOLT THROWER, DEATH KOMMANDER, SHRAPNEL STORM, DECAYING, JUST BEFORE DAWN, SCALPTURE, MEMORIAM. What's always been most important to me, and I keep saying it, is to trust the music, to get it in my head, to stay there, and to have the desire to come back to it. The new EP "Chapter XII" is exactly the kind of record that will make you want to watch a good war documentary. After all, you don't have to go far these days, just watch the news. Chilling grinds meet raw rhythms here, all wrapped up in a massive and easy to read sound, with stylish packaging (the theme reminds me of Warhammer 40k). The Poles firmly believe in what they play and it shows in their new release. I always say I love music played by heartthrobs for heartthrobs. That applies 100% here, plus you get the added bonus of a raw and morbid experience. CHAINSWORD may not be bringing anything new to the underground, but it's not just a craft well done this year either. On the contrary, you get an extra captivatingly dark and eerie atmosphere. You'll smell the stench of the dying, you'll soak up the grim moods of the trenches. You'll hear orders leading to more and more killing. You may die under fire, but you may survive to continue to be just a number in the crowd. A fog of blood rolls over the battlefield. The screams of the wounded are constantly interrupted by more and more bullets. The God of War is smiling. Piles of corpses, everything burns and gets into your head forever. Long after you return home, the nightmares will come back to you. Dark and cold, napalm-soaked war death metal! Experience death on the battlefield!

Vždycky to chvilku trvá, než mozek pochopí, že bolest nezmizí. Časová prodleva mezi bodnutím rezavým hřebem do uší a následným řevem oběti bývá někdy opravdu dlouhá. Vyděšená tvář, krev, která stéká pomalu po tváři. Sedíš opět ve tmavé kobce a přemýšlíš, proč zrovna ty. Slibovali ti rozhřešení, říkali ti, že se budeš mít dobře. Místo toho pomalu umíráš ve špíně a strachu. Zatím ještě trošku žiješ. Je to díky jediné věci. Pomáhá ti poslech surové a nechutné hudby.

Je tu nové album amerických tmářů ANTICHRIST SIEGE MACHINE. A já si opět při jejich poslechu připadám jako oběť inkvizice. Nikdy neodvolám! Nikdy se nebudu klanět padlým modlám. Místo toho přidám hlasitost a naplno si vychutnám zkažené melodie na nové nahrávce "Vengeance of Eternal Fire". Plamen hoří znovu jasně a spálí vás na popel. Stejně jako tahle nekřesťanská hudba. 


Je to black death metalový teror té nejvyšší kvalty. Žádné kompromisy, žádné zbytečnosti. Pánové útočí přímo a neznají slitování. Fanoušci třeba takových REVENGE, BLACK WITCHERY, BLASPHEMY, ARCHGOAT, TEITANBLOOD, IMPETUOUS RITUAL, DIOCLETIAN, MITOCHONDRIAN, MORTICIAN budou určitě spokojeni jako já. Tohle je totální masakr pro všechny prokleté, pro jedince, kteří mají rádi nahrubo nasekané zlo, tmu a nenávist proti všemu, co smrdí křesťanstvím. Jedná se o válku s nebem, po které zůstává jenom spálená země. Představte si hořící kostel, ve kterém se modlili krvelační vojáci. Můžeš zabíjet jak chceš, stačí odříkat modlitbu a bude ti odpuštěno. Novinka má masivní a ostrý zvuk, povedený démonický obal. Vše sedí perfektně na svých místech, nenalezl jsem žádná slabá místa. Je ale také pravdou, že jednotlivé nápady vyniknou naplno až po nějakém čase. Vše je mokvající, hnusné a zpočátku nepřístupné. Je to jako stát na pokraji močálu, ze kterého pomalu na povrch vyplouvají zohavená těla obětí. Moje pocity z "Vengeance of Eternal Fire" jsou velmi podobné. Během společných setkání cítím blízkou přítomnost smrti. Vždycky to chvilku trvá, než mozek pochopí, že bolest nezmizí. Časová prodleva mezi bodnutím rezavým hřebem do uší a následným řevem oběti bývá někdy opravdu dlouhá. Vyděšená tvář, krev, která stéká pomalu po tváři. Myslím, že netřeba dodávat cokoliv dalšího. Otočte volume pořádně doprava a nechte se rozsekat na malé kousky. Budete rozemleti na prach! Surový, masakrující black death metal s příchutí zkažené krve!

It always takes a while for the brain to understand that the pain doesn't go away. The time lag between the rusty nail in the ear and the victim's subsequent scream is sometimes really long. A frightened face, blood trickling slowly down the cheek. Sitting in a dark dungeon again, wondering why you. You were promised absolution, told you'd be fine. Instead, you're slowly dying in filth and fear. You're still alive a little bit. It's because of one thing. Listening to raw and disgusting music helps you.

There's a new album from American darkies ANTICHRIST SIEGE MACHINE. And listening to them again makes me feel like a victim of the Inquisition. I'll never call it off! I will never bow down to fallen idols. Instead, I'll turn up the volume and fully enjoy the wicked melodies on the new record "Vengeance of Eternal Fire". The flame burns bright again and burns you to ashes. Just like this unchristian music. 


It's black death metal terror of the highest quality. No compromises, no uselessness. Gentlemen attack directly and know no mercy. Fans of such bands as REVENGE, BLACK WITCHERY, BLASPHEMY, ARCHGOAT, TEITANBLOOD, IMPETUOUS RITUAL, DIOCLETIAN, MITOCHONDRIAN, MORTICIAN will surely be as satisfied as I am. This is a total massacre for all the damned, for individuals who like coarsely chopped evil, darkness and hatred against everything that stinks of Christianity. It is a war with heaven that leaves only scorched earth. Imagine a burning church where bloodthirsty soldiers prayed. You can kill all you want, just say a prayer and you will be forgiven. The novelty has a massive and crisp sound, hilarious demonic cover art. Everything fits perfectly in place, I found no weak spots. However, it is also true that individual ideas only become fully apparent after some time. Everything is soggy, ugly and initially inaccessible. It's like standing on the edge of a swamp from which the mutilated bodies of the victims slowly emerge. My feelings about "Vengeance of Eternal Fire" are very similar. I feel the near presence of death during our encounters together. It always takes a while for the brain to understand that the pain doesn't go away. The time lag between the rusty nail in the ears and the victim's subsequent scream is sometimes really long. A frightened face, blood trickling slowly down the cheek. I don't think I need to add anything else. Turn the volume all the way to the right and get chopped into little pieces. You'll be ground to dust! Raw, butchering black death metal with a taste of bad blood!

Díváš se do tmy a čekáš. Jsi lovec, jsi šelma. Musíš. Jinak zemřeš. Útočí na tebe hlavně v noci. Záblesk nože, proříznuté hrdlo. Vylezli z děr, jako krysy, jako démoni. Lekáš se stínů ještě dlouhé roky potom, když si doma. Děsivé sny, všechno se ti vrací. Tví kamarádi tolik štěstí neměli. Chodíš na jejich hroby a přemýšlíš, jaký to mělo smysl? Jsi vrah? Nebo hrdina? Válka se otiskla do tvé mysli a nikdy nezmizí. Stejně jako death metal, který hrají JUST BEFORE DAWN.

Jsem velkým fanouškem téhle smečky. Anders Biazzi je totiž velmi dobrý skladatel, muzikant, který dokáže napsat skladby, u kterých se pokaždé vždy cítím, že jsem uprostřed války. Tentokrát se vracíme do Vietnamu, do šíleného konfliktu. Do džungle, ve které se odehrával kus krvavé historie. Album je jako vzpomínání veteránů, jako memento. 


Devět ostrých songů, které vám prolétnou hlavou jako nábojnice. Zůstane po nich krvavá stopa a neodbytný pocit chladu. JUST BEFORE DAWN volně navazují na klasické nahrávky BOLT THROWER. Samozřejmě s vlastními nápady a invencí. Anders Biazzi se opět obklopil velmi zkušenými muzikanty. Jejich seznam najdete dole pod článkem. Všichni odvedli perfektní práci. Mrazivé, temné melodie, které ve mě opravdu evokují noční boje v džungli, jsou doslova návykové. Tohle je kapela ze staré školy se vším, co k tomu patří. Uvěřitelná, surová bestie, které se povedlo do skladeb propašovat velké množství temné energie. Je slyšet, že všichni nahrávali se srdcem na dlani, že opravdu věřili své práci. Není to ale jen poctivé řemeslo (perfektní zvuk i obal jsou samozřejmostí). Bez toho to samozřejmě nejde, ale tahle smečka dává do hudby všechno. Je to slyšet a já jako starý pes opět skláním svoji hlavu a kývám se spokojeně do rytmu. Tady se hraje pro všechny veterány, kteří mají rádi smrtící kov v jeho tradiční podobě. Netuším, jak to Anders Biazzi dělá, ale opět mu věřím každý tón, každou notu. "A War Too Far" je pro mě přesně tím druhem muziky, která koluje i v mých žilách. Určitě to znáte. Sednete si, zapnete přehrávač a čekáte, co s vámi novinka udělá. Mě přenesla o spoustu let zpět, do Vietnamu. Byl jsem stínem, který sledoval to obrovské utrpení, bolest. Kolem mě se povalovala mrtvá těla a já si říkal, že už by se to nemělo nikdy opakovat. Bohužel, lidé se nikdy nepoučí. Je moc dobře, že existují kapely, které nám naši historii stále připomínají. Díváš se do tmy a čekáš. Jsi lovec, jsi šelma. Musíš. Jinak zemřeš. Útočí na tebe hlavně v noci. Záblesk nože, proříznuté hrdlo. Vylezli z děr, jako krysy, jako démoni. Lekáš se stínů ještě dlouhé roky potom, když si doma. Děsivé sny, všechno se ti vrací. Chladné, děsivé vzpomínky na válku v death metalových zákopech! Masivní útok z temnoty!

You stare into the darkness and wait. You're a hunter, you're a beast. You must. Otherwise you will die. They attack you especially at night. The flash of a knife, a slit throat. They came out of the holes, like rats, like demons. You're scared of the shadows for years after you're home. Scary dreams, everything comes back to you. Your friends weren't so lucky. You go to their graves and wonder what was the point? Are you a murderer? Or a hero? The war has imprinted itself on your mind and will never go away. Just like the death metal that JUST BEFORE DAWN plays.

I'm a big fan of this pack. Because Anders Biazzi is a very good songwriter, a musician who can write songs that always make me feel like I'm in the middle of a war every time. This time we're going back to Vietnam, a crazy conflict. A jungle where a piece of bloody history took place. The album is like a veteran's remembrance, a memento.


Nine sharp songs that will fly through your head like bullets. They leave a trail of blood and an insistent feeling of cold. JUST BEFORE DAWN loosely follows the classic BOLT THROWER recordings. Of course with their own ideas and inventiveness. Anders Biazzi has once again surrounded himself with very experienced musicians. You can find their list below the article. They all did a perfect job. The chilling, dark melodies that really evoke night fights in the jungle are literally addictive. This is an old-school band with everything that goes with it. A believable, raw beast that manages to smuggle a lot of dark energy into the songs. You can hear that everyone recorded with their hearts on their sleeves, that they really believed in their work. But it's not just honest craftsmanship (perfect sound and cover art are a given). You can't do without that, of course, but this pack puts everything into their music. You can hear it, and like an old dog I bow my head again and sway contentedly to the beat. Here's a game for all the veterans who like the deadly metal in its traditional form. I have no idea how Anders Biazzi does it, but again I trust him with every note, every note. For me, "A War Too Far" is exactly the kind of music that runs through my veins as well. I'm sure you know it. You sit down, you turn on the player and you wait to see what the news does to you. It took me back many years, to Vietnam. I was a shadow watching the immense suffering, the pain. The dead bodies lying around me, and I told myself it should never happen again. Unfortunately, people never learn. It's very good that there are bands that still remind us of our history. You look into the darkness and you wait. You're the hunter, you're the beast. You have to. Otherwise you'll die. They attack you especially at night. The flash of a knife, a slit throat. They came out of the holes, like rats, like demons. You're scared of the shadows for years after you're home. Scary dreams, everything comes back to you. Cold, horrible memories of the war in the death metal trenches! A massive attack from the darkness!

Interview - STURMTIGER - A bestial, diabolical black death metal assault by undead soldiers!

Ave STURMTIGER! I must admit that when I received your new album "Transcendent Warfare" for review, the first thing that caught my attention was the name of your band. I wondered if your music would have the same power as the German rocket launcher you are named after. In fact, most bands that play warmetal choose a more mellow, melodic form of it. You guys literally blew me away. I really found myself on the battlefield immediately. Please take us through the history of the band.

PB: The band was founded in Denmark 20 years ago by VJ and JS. They recorded and released the first self-titled 10” which was thrashy black metal and sounded quite different to what we do now. I joined in 2007, when we recorded the very primitive “Tank Attack” 7”, and then we gathered a complete live lineup a couple of years later to record the Atomic Hammer EP. Our first full release was the “World at War 1914-1918” in 2014, and we also had a bunch of split appearances in between.

We used to play as a power trio, with bass, guitar and drums, but decided things would be better at every level if we had a separate bassist, so we enlisted our old comrade SB. The live show has become even more intense in recent years, when we decided to obscure our identities to appear more inhuman and faceless.

For us, War Metal is supposed to be ugly, like Conqueror, Blasphemophagher or Death Worship, although people’s definitions can vary. Bolt Thrower are obviously a “War Metal” band in the purest sense of the term as a band themed around actual war, even though their later material is cleaner and more epic. We also have a lot of influence from evil old thrash like Sodom.


You're interested in World War I and World War II in your lyrics. That's a pretty broad topic. Could you please tell us where you get your inspiration, which period or part of it you are most interested in? Who is the author of the lyrics?

PB: I write all of the lyrics for the band, apart from the Danish lyrics on the first self-titled 10”. It is interesting that people always seem to assume that we focus on the two World Wars, even though many of our songs are about the concepts of warfare and conquest, the horror of the experience and the bestial instincts of the human animal that drive it.

I was always more interested by the actual psychological experience of warfare than just telling the stories of some wars and battles, war as described in “Storm of Steel” by Ernst Junger and the bleak poem “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen. The Russian Civil War is really interesting, where many of the participants were equally admirable and terrifying, like Baron Ungern von Sternberg and Nestor Makhno. The accounts, memoirs and diaries of those who fought on the Eastern Front in WW2 and their stories of unspeakable ruthlessness and self-sacrifice are very inspiring as well. Current events and various films and works about the aftermath of a nuclear war also feed into some of the lyrics – “Threads” is probably the best film that really brings it home.

The new album "Transcendent Warfare" has a raw, gritty sound. I thought to myself, I haven't heard a record in a long time that was so bestial and blasphemous. Where did you record and who mixed and produced the album?

PB: By or standards, this is the most polished and clean we ever sounded! The album was mixed and mastered by a great Hungarian metal engineer called Tamas Rosznyai at Volume Unlimited studios in London, he is a real metalhead and completely understood what we were doing. As an underground band we did not have a “producer” as such – it ourselves and the engineer who worked on it. We also recorded a very raw demo version of the album in a rehearsal room to make sure the arrangements were as killer as possible, especially the vocals.


The packaging is also interesting. It's got a soldier on it and probably a raven on it. The motif has a very depressing effect on me and perfectly complements the music you play. Who's the composer? Isn't the painting based on an old model? I have a feeling I've seen it somewhere before. Or am I wrong?

PB: The art was done by a Russian artist called Anastasia, she has several online portfolios a page on FB and some other platforms called “Afuneral Morbidart”. Here is what she had to say about the cover: “I was inspired by the lyrics and music of Sturmtiger when I created the cover. The name of the album itself. The transcendent, otherworldly experience of destruction and death. I depicted the face of a soldier disfigured by death and the work actually was based on a real photo from those years. The raven is a carrion bird, a messenger from the world of the dead which has long been associated with war, dereliction, evil and death in Europe. The work is symbolic and I wanted to depict the symbols of Chaos and Death in a simple and accessible form. In this, I think I was successful.”

If I understand correctly, you were originally from Denmark and then moved to the UK? Do you see any change in terms of the underground in those countries? Over here they say "drinks like a Dane" and is "dry and boring like a Brit". I know they're clichés, but what about at gigs? What about the fans?

VJ: When I lived in Denmark and especially where I'm from, there was nothing going on. It was absolutely dead. Trying to find members to start a band was near enough impossible. Of course, after a few years stuff started to happen. Metal Magic and Killtown Fest appeared and the scene is getting bigger. The metalheads are pretty much the same, when they are sober, they are boring as fuck and get more interesting as their blood alcohol level increases.


Let's go back to the subject of your lyrics. It's such a strange time these days. People take shortcuts, they're quick to judge. Give a label. Plus, you play extreme metal, it still shocks some people. Have you ever had a problem in any country singing about World War II? And black metal? I can think of Christians in Poland...well, I could go on, but I don't want to upset anyone...

PB: Various retards assume that we are a political band simply because of the name, especially in the UK. We had a couple of gigs cancelled, but this is rare and the events we play are too underground for anyone in the authorities or the church to give a shit. There is this general trend for more and more censorship in metal itself, which is complete fucking shit, true underground metal should be free to explore whichever side of death, darkness and violence it wants.

I assume you play mostly in underground clubs. Do you enjoy presenting your music live? What about some kind of tour, I can think of a screening of films, documentaries related to your music. Isn't that tempting? Maybe I should have just written that I would like to see you somewhere live:)).

PB: We want to do a European tour this year or the next, probably concentrating on Eastern Europe where metal is more real. We also have an insane plan of maybe touring India, as we actually have some good contacts and their scene is really growing, or South America, as the maniacs there truly understand our metal. It would be great to involve other media like film and art, but it would take a very special promoter to organize something like that. There was a great show in Scotland put on by our friend Dave from Nyctopia which also had an exhibition and talk by Christophe Szpajdel, a real underground event, not just a metal gig.


You have two full-length albums, several EPs, splits, demos. What is your next goal? Is it a major label? A festival? Where do you want to take the band?

PB: We’ve been thinking of playing some festivals, of course, both to get more fans and the free food, booze and tickets. We definitely hope it won’t take us another nine years to release the next album and we will at least release some splits with bands from around the world in between. Our goal is to keep making martial metal of death that satisfies ourselves first and foremost, and whether it is heard by 100 underground maniacs or has some kind of mass appeal is purely secondary.

What does black and death metal mean to you? How would you define it if you had to explain your music to someone outside the scene? Do you see music as a lifestyle? Or is it mainly relaxation and a hobby?

PB: The simultaneous application of a trepanning drill and a chainsaw to the skull, coupled with intense and perverse pleasure. And yes, it is definitely a lifestyle for me for nearly 27 years, both spiritually and ideologically. Apart from playing in bands, I’ve been a promoter, written for metal sites, run a distro and have been learning sound engineering.

What is STURMTIGER planning in the near future? Will we see "Transcendent Warfare" on vinyl?

PB: We will definitely release the album on tape and vinyl once we find the right labels for it. It’s not a question of “if”, it’s a question of “when”. Now that it’s easy to find any release instantly and for free on the internet, metalheads want real artifacts like tapes and vinyls and the ritualistic feeling of having to make some effort to listen to music.
