Interview - DAVE INGRAM - Death metal is my lifestyle.


Interview with legendary death metal vocalist - DAVE INGRAM, thank you!

Hi Dave, hello to Denmark and thank you so much for your time. We recently talked with friends in a pub about the best death metal singers and we used your name very often. What does death metal actually mean to you? Is it a lifestyle, a demanding hobby, a rest? Or necessity, the joy of music itself?

Many thanks for the interview, and Denmark sends greetings back to you.  Death Metal has been a part of my life for so long that it’s actually become difficult to categorise it in any manner. Though if I have to say so, then I guess that one could say it is more like a lifestyle than simply a hobby. For me it’s most certainly a necessity. I don’t ever want to think of not producing some form of music or other. I know a day will come but that day is certainly not here yet.


You are already at the age when you could live only on what you have created in your life. But you're still working, you're still appearing on new records. A lot of the singers will destroy their vocal cords during those years of "screaming" or become a bitter caricature, but I feel that you still have a "goal move" and you are in a good mood? The photos you smile at, you go among the fans at festivals, you're cool. Where do you get so much positive energy from, please? Wouldn't you have a recipe for me? I'm a few years younger and sometimes I go home on Friday as tired and grumpy as an old dog. 

If I were to stop now I would be happy with what I have done. But stopping making music is NOT an option for me. I aim to continue for as long as I can. Indeed, a lot of singers have ruined their voices, and the difference can be heard in their individual styles from the past to the present. Why has mine not done that? Well, you have to remember that I took some time away from performing live…10 years to be exact. I recorded albums, and did other projects - as well as my online show, Metal Breakfast Radio - but I wasn’t constantly touring. I also quit smoking which was a great help to my voice and overall health. As for not being bitter…well I can be a grumpy dog a times myself, but I try not to be. More so with fans these days, as it is a joy to meet them at gigs, drink a beer with them, and find out how the scene is in their respective countries. I smile in photos because I’m having such a good time.


There is a quarantine around us, there are no concerts in the Czech Republic, a lot of people are locked up at home. It's like an apocalypse from a horror movie. You work at the Danish Cancer Research Institute, how did corona-virus enter your life? It's very difficult for us - fans, live performances are the spice of our lives in my opinion. Because the grain is separated from the chaff, real fans and bands who are serious and heartfelt will get to know each other. How do you manage the current situation? 

So far, the virus hasn’t entered my life, besides the quarantine we had here in Denmark. Right now things are easing off and we are slowly getting back to normal. There are still rules to follow, and their will be for a long time, until a vaccine is produced, but it is a necessary evil. Sadly concerts have all been moved until next year and we have to wait to see if there will be any towards the end of this year - but I very much doubt it. I fear a second wave of infection will hit, and wipe out even more gigs…and, sadly, a lot more people.


When I saw the last BENEDICTION performance with Dave Hunt at the Symbolic Open Air festival, I was sorry that he was ending in the band. The friend kept terrible secrets with who would be the successor. I think your return surprised a lot of people, though, not really. Do you know what they say? You will not enter the same river twice. Anyway, congratulations and we look forward to new music from BENEDICTION. Do you have anything ready yet? Can you tell us some news? How did your return happen? 

Yes, it was me that started the rumour about “not swimming in the same river” as I posted that it would not be me on my Facebook profile and pages. BUT I was hinting at it for some months. It was exciting to receive the call. Dan (Bate, bassist) messaged me online and asked if I could get in touch with Darren (Brookes, guitar) about working together. Originally it was going to be temporary, as then vocalist Dave Hunt was going to be away working on his studies, but it soon became clear he wanted to commit more time to that than to the band, so I was asked to rejoin permanently. Before I spoke to Darren, my wife and son told me that if I was asked to rejoin then I should definitely say yes. So I did. We kept it a closely guarded secret for a long time, even when I went over to Birmingham to rehearse with them.


In recent years, I have received excellent records from bands such as ECHELON, DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN, URSINNE, JUST BEFORE DAWN. I received for reviews promo recordings from the Indian Transcending Obscurity Records and their boss Kunal Choksi, and I also ordered the original CD. This is exactly death metal in the form I love. How did your collaboration create with Rogga Johansson, Jonny Petersson and others? Are you planning something new? What and how those connections happened? 

There are definitely plans for new albums and new projects. Right now there will obviously be the new Benediction album, plus there will be the following: 

Hellfrost And Fire - “Fire, Frost And Hell” (debut album) 

Troikadon - “Triumvirate Of Death” (full-length album) 

Down Among The Dead Men - as yet untitled 4th album 

Echelon - as yet untitled 3rd album 

Ursinne - “Rise With The Behemoth” (second album) 

These projects came to be due to all us guys contacting each other over our love for the music of this genre. We wanted to experiment with what we knew and express our art in different ways.


Nowadays, it's great that you listen to new music in advance, in good quality, and then you decide what to buy, who you will support. But it has another side, the bands are insanely too many and it's hard to make a filter. Of course, famous names rule, but I think it's still hard for young people. According to which key do you choose the bands? And now I don't think just for your hosting, but also for listening. Do you have a current discovery in your collection, a new band when you said - „great, this is exactly the music I like“!? 

I have always had a lot of interest and love for the Swedish D-beat style, so any band who sounds like that will get a thumbs up from me, regardless of where they are from. But in truth, if the metal is written from the heart, and not some pompous arrogance, then I will most certainly have an ear for it in my collection. I also get introduced to new music on my show, Metal Breakfast Radio…but more on that in the next question, right?


You have a radio show at Metal Breakfast Radio. How do you feel as a moderator? It's clear you're used to performing in front of an audience, but this is something else. It must be an interesting job, but like everyone else it has its pitfalls. What was the hardest thing for you at the radio? 

It wasn’t hard, really. Only when starting out in the early days of it (12 years ago!) when we had no listeners at all. It was the beginning of the first wave of podcasts so that was the way we originally went - and we still release it as such nowadays. There were several online radio stations that syndicated the show because they loved the originality and the humour of it, so we became very popular quite quickly. These days I am very busy and we can no longer produce shows as much as we want to…plus we now have the quarantine so there’s no chance for us to meet up and record a show. I have some episodes ready to use so I will put one out this weekend, as it has been a little while since any new content was aired. It’s a fun thing to do and I can always go back to it full-time once the bands are all done. It will make the perfect retirement plan!


You must be a very busy man. Work at the institute, radio, BENEDICTION and many other activities. How is Dave Ingram actually resting? Do you have time left for movies and series, for example? I read somewhere that you like Douglas Adams, Arthur C. Clark, and of course Dr. Who! 

My job is such that I get 3 yours a day sitting in the office using my laptop. It is in these times that I catch up with band work (such as this interview!) and writing lyrics and music when necessary. I also use the time to edit my radio show, and also to watch some TV shows. I stay up late on weekends to watch movies, so I am pretty much covered in my rest and relaxation time. I wish I had more time to complete more of my own tasks. There are not enough hours in the day for them all! Though with that said, I will soon be having another operation on my second hip. It also needs to be replaced, so I will be off my feet for a short time while I heal and will have more time for my projects.


After your arrival in Denmark, you have been in the band DOWNLORD. But you released only one album? On Metal Archives a „split-up“ is written next to the status. How I should to understand to this? Will there ever be any new music, a new CD? I really enjoyed your death metal. 

No, new Downlord is currently planned. We are possibly considering re-recording the album - or certain tracks from it - way off in the future, as the technology will give us a more advanced sound. We released our two demos on the “Grind Trials” EP, and the full-length album “Random Dictionary of the Damned” soon after. It’s strange, as I was sorting through some old CDs the other day and I found our demo discs. I still have many of them, plain white cover with a print on the disc. I don’t even know if they work after all this time. I guess I must check them out, then see if anyone wants them.


When I interviewed Karl Willetts from the excellent MEMORIAM, he said: “I've seen a lot of bands experiment with the new sound over the years and in the end it tends to discourage fans. Memoriam will always have one hundred percent roots in old school death metal". This sentence dug deep into my memory. I realized that on old death metal I love that dusty, rotten and cold sound. Every old band can be recognized during the first few tones. When I hear some current modern brutal technical progressive death metal bands, I somehow don't understand it anymore. I always only survive a few songs live and then I get bored. It often only seems to me like a group of jazz-men who have come to show how they can play in a very complicated way - but back to the question - how do you perceive modern trends in death metal? Do you like any bands? 

This is going to be a short answer. I don’t listen to very much modern Death Metal, unless they have an OSDM sound. The bands trying to experiment are not of interest to me at all. Give me OSDM or Get The Fuck Out!


You must have been already explaining somewhere why you left Great Britain and moved to Denmark. But I would rather be interested - what you can say about the death metal scene there. I know from recent times, bands like PHRENELITH, SULPHUROUS, UNDERGANG, BAEST, DEIQUISITOR. And then I really like the thrash ARTILLERY and HATESPHERE. I also did interviews with HATESPHERE, and the bands agreed that Denmark doesn't have many places to play underground or death metal. In my opinion, Britain has an advantage in this, there are a lot of clubs, festivals, pubs. How do you perceive the Danish scene? 

There’s a LOT of excellent underground DM here in Denmark. I’d put UNDERGANG at the top of them, definitely. So many bands here that were sadly overlooked by many, so I’d say that people should be supporting the underrated scene in Denmark. Bands from the past, such as DETEST are doing new albums too. (I’ve heard some of it, and can tell you it’s going to be killer!) Who knows…maybe some band called Downlord will rear it’s head once more, too. Nowadays there are more places for the Danish underground to play live. The scene here is growing in strength again.


You are a legend in death metal, you have done a lot of great work. But do you still have some dream? Maybe tour with your favorite band or share a stage with your idol? To sing with AUTOPSY for example? So does David Ingram have any unfulfilled dreams? 

I’m fulfilling a lot of my dreams as it is, and have done so previously. My one dream? That is to be in an episode of Doctor Who. I nearly was back in 2015….back then I was friends with the musical composer for the show, Murray Gold. I told him if ever he needed any growls he should just ask. He said that the show would need some very soon BUT the job went to Corey Taylor from Slipknot. I understand why, as he is more well known than me, but it was a great disappointment. Still, there is maybe time for a part. 

As a singer, you sing lyrics that you have to identify with. Or at least that's how I hear your voice. That you believe to what you sing. Are the lyrics very important to you? Did you refuse one, for example? And do you write yours too? What I did find, so I think you just wrote something to the album from URSINNE, or am I wrong? 

The lyrics are very important to me, and I have to believe in what I am singing. This is usually fine, since I write them myself. But there have been times when I was singing someone else’s lyrics and I couldn’t put my voice to them. These were usually bands asking me to make guest vocals, not the bands I have joined in the past. (I am still available for guest vocals but you will now have to talk with my agent directly first.)

Do hrobky s nápisem SINISTER jsem poprvé vstoupil ještě v dobách, kdy neměli venku svoji prvotinu "Cross the Styx" (1992). Bylo to rok předtím, když mi kamarád přinesl nahranou kazetu se stejnojmenných názvem. Tenkrát se pro mě stalo nepsaným pravidlem, že pokaždé, když kapela vydala novou desku, tak jsem stál netrpělivě před rezavými dveřmi do záhrobí. Většinou jsem byl nadšen, občas mi trvalo déle, než jsem se do jejich hudby dostal, ale vždy jsem si nové album pořídil do sbírky. Na SINISTER se mi vždy nejvíc líbila temnota, kterou pokaždé dokázali do svých skladeb propašovat.

Přiznávám, že minulý počin "Syncretism" (2017) se mi zadřel natolik pod kůži, že jsem jej poslouchal velmi často. Líbil se mi příklon k větší melodičnosti. Brutální old school death metalový (a zároveň svěží a pestrý) nářez s chladným výrazem. Tak jsem před lety desku vnímal a letošní novinka "Deformation of the Holy Realm" na mě působí velmi podobně. 




Na SINISTER se mi vždy líbilo, že jste je poznali během několika okamžiků. V době, kdy je problém odlišit jednotlivé kapely od sebe, kdy se každý snaží hrát co nejrychleji, nejtechničtěji, případně tvrdí, že je progresivní, předkládají Holanďané tradiční syrový a surový materiál. Čerpají ze své bohaté historie a zároveň nezapomínají na tolik důležitou atmosféru. Vynikající bicí, typický Aadův vokál a řezající riffy jsou zárukou, že se fanoušci kapely nebudou nudit. SINISTER jsou staří psi, kteří vám opět nakopou zadek. Jdou bez zbytečností rovnou na věc. Přímo do srdce. Sázejí na kruté melodie, které vás přenesou do znesvěceného kostela. Na zdech visí nevěřící. Peklo na zemi, víra byla vždycky slepá. Pro mě je důležité, že si skladby pamatuji, otiskly se mi do hlavy jako rozžhavené železo. Poslední roky je hrozně příjemné být fanouškem kapely, protože každá deska je trošku jiná a zároveň si SINISTER zachovávají svůj rukopis. Pokud máte rádi výlety do záhrobí, kde potkáváte smečky jako CANNIBAL CORPSE, VITAL REMAINS, MALEVOLENT CREATION, se kterými mají Holanďané letos několik styčných bodů, tak neváhejte ani chvilku. Tohle je pravé old school death metalové peklo se vším, co k tomu patří. Krvavé inferno!

I first entered the tomb with the inscription SINISTER when they even hadn’t released their first album "Cross the Styx" (1992). It was a year before when a friend brought me a recorded tape with the same name. At that time, it became an unwritten rule for me that every time the band released a new record, I stood impatiently in front of the rusty door to the grave. Mostly I was excited, sometimes it took me longer to get into their music, but I always bought a new album to my collection. At SINISTER, I always liked the darkness the most, which they always managed to smuggle into their songs.

I admit that the previous act "Syncretism" (2017) got under my skin as I listened it very often. I liked the inclination to be more melodic. Brutal old school death metal (and at the same time fresh and colourful) with a cold expression. That's how I perceived the record years ago and this year's novelty "Deformation of the Holy Realm" has a very similar effect on me.



At SINISTER, I've always liked that you recognise them in a few seconds. At a time when it is a problem to distinguish individual bands from each other, when everyone is trying to play as fast as possible, as technically as possible, or claiming to be progressive, the Dutch present traditional raw material. They draw from their rich history and at the same time do not forget such an important atmosphere. Excellent drums, typical vocal and cutting riffs are a guarantee that the band's fans will not be bored. SINISTER are old dogs who will kick your ass again. They go straight to the point without uselessness. Right to the heart. They bet on cruel melodies that will take you to the desecrated church. Unbelievers hang on the walls. Hell on earth, faith has always been blind. It's important to me that I remember the songs they imprinted on my head like a red-hot iron. In recent years, it's been really nice to be a fan of the band, because each record is a little different and at the same time SINISTER keep their craft-work. If you like trips to the graveyard, where you meet bands such as CANNIBAL CORPSE, VITAL REMAINS, MALEVOLENT CREATION, with which the Dutch have several similar, then do not hesitate for a moment. This is real old school death metal hell with everything that goes with it. Bloody inferno!

Rekonstrukce místa činu probíhala brzy ráno. Nad starým statkem, opuštěným v lesích, se vznášela mlha. Měla barvu krve. Obviněný se znovu vžil do děje před několika lety. Stačilo pár ran tupým předmětem a nebohá dívka padla na zem s roztříštěnou lebkou. Nejhorší moment nastal, když předváděl, jak tahal tělo do nedaleké studny. Jakoby figurína ožila, jakoby se všude kolem vznášel její nářek. Hluboko pod zemí, v kalné vodě se čas postaral o to, aby maso zmizelo a zůstala jen bělostná kostra. Když ji nalezl náhodný kolemjdoucí, držela v rukách nové album moravských death metalistů CRANIAL CARNAGE.


Jedná se o druhý počin od zkušených muzikantů, kteří rozumí velmi dobře svému morbidnímu řemeslu. Letos se pánové vydali cestou větší brutality a temnoty. Minulá deska "Abhorrence" se stala na dlouhou dobu mojí oblíbenou nahrávkou, kterou jsem často upřednostňoval před mnohem slavnějšími spolky. CRANIAL CARNAGE totiž mají dar zabíjet hudbou. 



Na albu "Crown of Impiety" se CRANIAL CARNAGE posunuli do stejných krvavých vod, jako třeba takoví GORGASM, SUFFOCATION, DERANGED, DISAVOWED, DISGORGE, IMMOLATION a zároveň si zachovali svůj old school death metalový feeling. Nová deska je nekompromisní, zničující, syrová a surová. Budete mít pocit, že vám někdo drtí kosti velkým kladivem, případně, že jste spadli do lisu. Ocitnete se na místech, kde se staly ty nejhorší vraždy. Ze skladeb cítím temnotu a chlad, věci, které jsem obdivoval u prvních brutálních spolků někdy na počátku tohoto stylu. Černobílý obal vše jen krásně podtrhuje. CRANIAL CARNAGE přidali na síle, songy jsou komplikovanější, rychlejší, složitější. Zároveň jsou ale dobře napsané, člověk se nestihne ani na chvilku nudit. Líbí se mi i zvuk, který je průrazný, ale zároveň organický a čitelný. Není to žádný produkt dnešní doby, ale poctivá práce. Tahle smečka má svůj vlastní špinavý ksicht a to se rozhodně počítá. Po počátečním překvapení, kdy mě deska posadila doslova na zadek, jsem se začal pohupovat do rytmu, hledat opuštěnou studnu, přidávat volume, oddělovat maso od kostí. Tohle album smrdí krví a já nemohu hodnotit jinak, než velmi vysoko. Po poslechu už stejně nemám kůži na obličeji. Absolutní brutální death metalový masakr, který vás vykostí zaživa!

The reconstruction of the crime scene took place early in the morning. The fog hovered over the old farm, deserted in the woods. It possessed the color of blood. The accused got back into the crime that happened a few years ago. Only a few blows with a blunt object were enough, and the poor girl fell to the ground with a shattered skull. The worst moment came when he demonstrated pulling his body into nearby water well. It was as if the mannequin came to life as if her wail were hovering all around. Deep under the ground, in muddy water, time made sure the flesh disappeared, and only a white skeleton remained. When she was found by a random passer-by, she was holding a new album of Moravian death metalists CRANIAL CARNAGE.

This is the second record from experienced musicians who understand their morbid craft very well. This year, the gentlemen set out on a path of greater brutality and darkness. The last album "Abhorrence" became for a long time my favorite record, which I often preferred instead of much more famous groups. CRANIAL CARNAGE has the gift of killing with their music.



On the album "Crown of Impiety", CRANIAL CARNAGE moved into the same bloody waters as GORGASM, SUFFOCATION, DERANGED, DISAVOWED, DISGORGE, IMMOLATION and at the same time, they kept their old school death metal feeling. The new record is uncompromising, destructive, raw and brutal. You will feel that someone is crushing your bones with a big hammer, or that you have fallen into a pressing machine. You will find yourself in the places where the worst murders took place. I feel darkness and coldness from the songs, these are things I admired at the first brutal death metal groups sometimes at the beginning of this style. The black and white cover only underlines everything beautifully. CRANIAL CARNAGE has added to the power, the songs are more complicated, faster, more complex. At the same time, however, they are very well written, you don't have time to get bored for a moment. I also like the sound, which is penetrating, but at the same time, it is organic and legible. It is not a product of today, but honest work. This band has its own dirty face, and that definitely counts. After the initial surprise, when the album literally places on my ass, I began to sway to the beat, looking for abandoned water well, adding volume, separating flesh from bones. This album stinks of blood and I can't rate it other than very high. After listening, I still don't have skin on my face. An absolutely brutal death metal massacre that will unbone you alive!

Ve starých spisech se píše, že při veřejných popravách mělo největší úspěch lámání v kole. Dav býval tak nadšený, že muselo být povoláno vojsko, aby si lidé nerozebrali mrtvé tělo jako talismany. Krvelačný zástup rozšklebených tváří. Pach smrti. Slabší povahy omdlévaly nebo byly ušlapány. Středověk dávno skončil, ale lidé jsou stále stejní, jen se vše přesunulo na obrazovky. Smrt je pořád přitažlivá. Hlava uříznutá v přímém přenosu. Strach a nízké pudy. To je, oč tu běží po staletí.

Poslouchám tři nové skladby od portugalských INNARDS a připadám si, jako bych byl na místě, kde se před několika dny popravovalo. Vidím před sebou kápě katů, slyším nářek obětí i cítím krev, která zůstala na zemi. Poslouchám u toho "Back From The Grave, Straight In Your Face", starý prašivý death grind, který mi krásně dokresluje celkovou temnou atmosféru.



"Back From The Grave, Straight In Your Face" je nekompromisním nářezem ve stylu prvních desek CARCASS, ale máme tu co do činění i s odkazy na REPULSION, PESTILENCE, DEATH, GRAVE, IMPETIGO. INNARDS jsou neurvalí a suroví jako vzteklí psi, jako katovi pacholci, kteří vás vytáhnou na šibenici. Houpáte se ve větru, jazyk vyplazený, oči vám málem vyskočí z hlavy. Ano, hudba zde má přesně takový tlak. Je špinavá, zákeřná, surová, se zvukem, který láme kosti v těle. Potěší i hosté (Kam Lee z MASSACRE a Frank Blackfire ze SODOM). Oba odvedli parádní práci. Tahle deska je jako úder kladivem přímo do obličeje. Kati to také tak dělali, odsouzení pak více křičeli a dav byl spokojený. "Back From The Grave, Straight In Your Face" je stejnou morbidní show, veřejnou exhumací starého hrobu, ve kterém se ukrývá death grindová sněť. INNARDS odvedli skvělou práci. Jen doufám, že se brzy dočkáme dlouhohrajícího alba. Smrt, která si nevybírá!

In ancient documents it is written that breaking in a bicycle was the greatest success in public executions. The crowd used to be so excited that an army had to be called in so that people would not dismantle a dead body like talismans. A bloody crowd of grimaces. The smell of death. Weaker natures fainted or were trampled. The Middle Ages are long over, but the people are still the same, only everything has moved to the screens. Death is still attractive. Head cut on live. Fear and low instincts. That's what's been going on here for centuries.

I'm listening to three new songs from the Portuguese INNARDS and I feel like I'm at the place where the execution took place a few days ago. I see the hood of executioners in front of me, I hear the cries of the victims and I smell the blood left on the ground. I listen to "Back From The Grave, Straight In Your Face", an old dusty death grind, which beautifully illustrates the overall dark atmosphere.



"Back From The Grave, Straight In Your Face" is an uncompromising cut in the style of the first CARCASS records, but we are also dealing with references to REPULSION, PESTILENCE, DEATH, GRAVE, IMPETIGO. INNARDS are rude and brutal like angry dogs, like executioners, who will pull you to the gallows. You sway in the wind with tongue out, your eyes almost popping out of your head. Yes, music has just such pressure here. It is dirty, insidious, raw, with a sound that breaks the bones in the body. Guests will also enjoy (Kam Lee from MASSACRE and Frank Blackfire from SODOM). They both did a great job. This album is like a hammer blow directly to the face. Executioners did the same, the convicts shouted more and the crowd was satisfied. "Back From The Grave, Straight In Your Face" is the same morbid show, a public exhumation of an old grave that hides a death grind scab. INNARDS did a great job. I just hope to see a full-length album soon. Death doesn't choose!

Vždycky jsem si myslel, že jednou bude lidstvo zničeno při jaderné katastrofě. Nebo při nekonečné válce. Připadala v úvahu i nějaká epidemie. Ale není to pravda. Lidé se jako druh zničí sami. Propojeni v jedné síti se postupně do popředí dostanou ti zlí a nakonec ovládnou naše myšlenky. Apokalypsa dávno začala v našich hlavách. S tím musím s pražskou death metalovou skupinou CONSEQUENCES souhlasit. Jejich prvotina tato tvrzení jasně potvrzuje.

Jedná se o nekompromisní syrový a surový smrtící kov, který vám nedá vydechnout. Skladby vás, stejně jako jaderný výbuch, otisknou na protější zeď. Pro mě má album jednu zásadní devizu - opravdu dobře se poslouchá. Navíc má přesně takový ten úderný zvuk, který mi dělá dobře. Některé struktury jsou zpočátku trošku nepřehledné a je nutné jim dát čas, ale když vydržíte, tak budete po zásluze odměněni krutou smrtí. 
CONSEQUENCES hrají komplikovaně, přesto si songy zachovávají potřebnou temnou atmosféru. Death metal v podobném hávu sice asi nikdy nebude okupovat přední místa v žebříčcích lesklých časopisů, ale takhle v malém klubu s dobrým zvukem vám pánové pěkně nakopou zadky. "Survival Mechanism" má v sobě drive i sílu. Je to poctivá drtička kostí, ale nejedná se jen o obyčejnou kopírku věcí minulých. Pánové (již se zkušenostmi z jiných kapel) u skládání přemýšleli a je to hodně znát. Jsem rád za každou podobnou smečku, která (právě i díky čitelnému zvuku ze studia Davos) ráda objevuje nová zákoutí. Je extrémní a zároveň dokáže předložit hudbu, u které bylo odvedeno dobré řemeslo. Nebývá to (nejen) v našich končinám pravidlem. Album je ochutnávkou, příslibem do budoucna, morbidní ozvěnou s jasným sdělením. Líbí se mi práce bubeníka, ale nezaostávají ani ostatní. Brutalita se zde potká s temnotou, chladem a dobrými nápady. Ale abych jen nechválil, některé songy jsou možná až příliš dlouhé, osobně bych je trošku zkrátil. Pánové na můj vkus občas až moc popustili uzdu své fantazie. Jsou to ale jen drobnosti, které mi nemohou pokazit celkový dojem. "Survival Mechanism" bylo testováno na několika death metalistech a ani jeden nepřežil. Osobně dávám  CONSEQUENCES razítko kvality a těším se na další záseky z jejich stáje. Apokalypsa dávno nastala! Slyšte, slyšte, slyšte!

I always thought that one day humanity would be destroyed in a nuclear catastrophe or during an endless war. An epidemic was also possible. But it's not true. As a species, humans will destroy themselves on their own. Connected in one network, the bad guys gradually come to the fore and eventually they will control our thoughts. The apocalypse began a long time ago in our heads. I have to agree with the Prague death metal band CONSEQUENCES. Their first album clearly confirms these claims.

It is an uncompromising raw and brutal death metal that will not let you breathe. The songs, like the nuclear explosion, will imprint you on the opposite wall. For me, the album has one major feature - it listens really well. Plus, it possesses that striking sound that makes me feel good. Some structures are a bit confusing at first and require more time, but if you persevere, you will be rewarded with a cruel death.


CONSEQUENCES play complicatedly, yet the songs retain the necessary dark atmosphere. Death metal in a similar way will probably never occupy the leading positions in the rankings of metal magazines, but in this manner, the gentlemen will kick your asses in a small club with a good sound. "Survival Mechanism" has both, the drive and power. It's an honest bone crusher, but it's not just an ordinary copier of things from the past. Gentlemen (already with experience from other bands) have been thinking about composing and you can hear it from the songs. I'm happy for every similar band that (thanks to the readable sound from the Davos studio) likes to discover new things. They are extreme and at the same time, they can present music that has been well done. This is not the rule in our region/country. The album is a tasting sample, a promise for the future, a morbid echo with a clear message. I like the work of a drummer, but the others don't lag behind either. Brutality meets darkness, coldness and good ideas. But on the other hand, some songs may be too long; I personally would shorten them a bit. Gentlemen sometimes unleashed their imagination more than I would prefer. But these are just little things that can't spoil my overall impression. Personally, I give CONSEQUENCES a stamp of quality and I look forward to more music from their headquarter. The apocalypse began a long time ago! Listen, listen, listen!

Recenze/review - RUINAS - Ikonoklasta (2020)

Trepanace lebky je zákrok, který je starý jako lidstvo samo. Pokud viděl pacient přízraky nebo byl šílený ze situace kolem, stačilo kladivo a ostrý hřeb. Tlak v lebce byl uvolněn a pokud nebožák ihned nezemřel, tak se mu opravdu ulevilo. Když vidím občas dnešní svět, když na mě každý den útočí tuny zbytečných informací, tak bych se trepanace rozhodně nebál. Mým lékem je ale prvotina death grindových šílenců ze Španělska, kteří si říkají RUINAS. Stačil první poslech a hřeb byl do mé lebky ihned zaražen.

Baví mě způsob, jakým RUINAS k death metalu a grindu přistupují. Nejedná se jen o obyčejný nářez, ale promyšlené skladby, které mají temně chladnou atmosféru. Také je pod hudbou podepsán Rober Bustabad, který působil v MACHETAZO, který k sobě přizval bubeníka Angela. Výsledek asi nejlépe posoudíte sami, ale co se týká mé maličkosti, tak já si tenhle čerstvě prasklý mokvající vřed velmi užívám. 

Pokud bych měl desku "Ikonoklasta" zařadit mezi spřízněná alba kapel, volil bych asi MISERY INDEX, WORMROT, BRUJERIA, ROTTEN SOUND, WOLFBRIGADE, ale i třeba INCANTATION. Líbí se mi určitý těkavý neklid, nutkání, které ze songů cítím. Nutí mě se k desce znovu vracet. Atmosféra je opravdu hodně podobná nepovedené operaci hlavy. Pacient ještě trošku žije, ale nebude to dlouho trvat a změní se v zombie, zabijácké monstrum. Z RUINAS je hodně slyšet, že vznikli jako  kapela pro radost, spontánně, že z nich riffy vylétly jako krev z proříznuté tepny. Navíc je jejich sound jiný než u ostatních, což se v dnešní době nadprodukce hudby cení nade vše. "Ikonoklasta" je špinavým, surovým originálním albem, ze kterého stříká hnis na všechny strany. Je odbrzděným vlakem, který vás smete do samotného pekla. Je proseknutou lebkou, ze které kouká mozek. Hlavně je ale nahrávkou, která dokázala přitáhnout moji pozornost, podmanit si mě a vytrhnout mi srdce z těla. Už teď se těším na cokoliv, co vznikne v jejich morbidní dílně. Temný death grind, který vám zkazí krev v těle!

Skull trepanation is a procedure that is as old as humanity itself. If the patient saw ghosts or was mad from the situation around, a hammer and a sharp nail were enough. The pressure in the skull was relieved, and if the deceased didn't die straight away, he did feel really relief. When I sometimes see today's world, when tons of useless information attack me every day, I would definitely not be afraid of trepanation. But my remedy is the first album of death grind lunatic from Spain who call themselves RUINAS. Just listening it for the first time and the nail was already stuck in my skull.

I enjoy the way how RUINAS approaches to the death metal and grind. It's not just an ordinary, but thoughtful songs that have a darkly cool atmosphere. The music is also signed by Rober Bustabad, who also been in MACHETAZO, who invited drummer Angel to join him. You will probably judge the result yourself, but I really enjoy this freshly cracked wetting ulcer.


If I had to include the album "Ikonoklasta" among the related albums of the bands, I would probably choose MISERY INDEX, WORMROT, BRUJERIA, ROTTEN SOUND, WOLFBRIGADE, but also INCANTATION. I like a certain volatile restlessness, the urge I feel from the songs. It forces me to return to the record. The atmosphere is really very similar to a failed head operation. The patient is still alive, but it won't take long and he will turn into a zombie, a killer monster. There is possible to hear that RUINAS were formed as a band for pleasure, spontaneously, that riffs flew out of them like blood from a severed artery. In addition, their sound is different from the others, which is highly valued. "Ikonoklasta" is a dirty, raw original album, from which spurt pus on all sides. It is an unbreaked train that will take you to hell itself. It's a pierced skull from which the brain looks. But most of all, it is a recording that managed to attract my attention, conquer me and rip my heart out of my body. I'm already looking forward to whatever happens in their morbid workshop. A dark death grind that will make your blood in your body rotten!

Příběh dvoustý čtyřicátý osmý - Buddha ze sídliště

Zbývající dny na chalupě byly svým způsobem dokonalý. Plnili jsme si s Kristýnkou svý malý sny, dělali věci, které na vozíku nemohla. Byla divoká a já vlastně taky. Dvou týdenní samota mi prospěla, vyčistil jsem si hlavu, zklidnil se a najednou mi připadalo všechno takový čistý, dokonalý. Jo, asi jsem byl šťastnej. Možná až moc. Tančila mi v ranní rose, když jsem vytáhl ven stolek a sedl si s čajem. Kroutila naschvál zadkem, lákala mě a předváděla se, až jsem ji musel krotit kvůli sousedům. Máš doma koukám pěknou divošku, říkali mi kamarádi ze vsi a já se nosil jako páv. Dělalo mi to samozřejmě hrozně dobře. Ten brejlatej klučík, co byl spíš zakřiknutej, byl najednou šílenej nadsamec.

Pomalu mi ale začalo docházet, že mě čeká maturita na nástavbě. Nějak moc jsem to neřešil, na ekonomce se dá ledacos okecat a to mi vždycky šlo. Je fakt, že jsem si ani na chalupu nebral učebnice a sešity. Normálně jsem se na to vybodnul. Sázel jsem na svůj šarm a taky jsem byl u učitelů oblíbený. Tedy až na jednu dámičku, co jsem ji dřív v určitém mezidobí oprašoval a ona mi nemohla zapomenout, že jsem se s ní rozešel. Zdálo se, že mi bude dělat velký problémy, ale opak byl pravdou. Asi už chodila s někým jiným a nebo ji osvítil duch svatý. Nevím, každopádně se mi tentokrát nepomstila a já při maturitě exceloval. Měl jsem dobrý známky, dokonce jsem si spoustu věcí pamatoval. 

Maturita trvala dva dny a když se skončilo, tak jsme šli k Hymrům. Já a asi dvacet holek. Paráda. Tenhle večírek jsem si chtěl hodně užít. A jak přibývala další pivka, tak byly některý slečny hodně přítulný. Bohužel nejvíc přesně ve chvíli, když vstoupila do dveří Kristýnka. Nejdřív se tomu smála, ale bylo na ní vidět, že je pěkně naštvaná a žárlí. Hospoda skončila a já se těšil na víkend. Konečně jsem svobodnej. Teď už jenom nějak vyřešit vojnu a hurá, čeká mě život. Dokonce jsem začal uvažovat nad tím, že požádám doopravdy Kristu o ruku, seženeme větší byt a tak dále. Jenže všechno se schumelilo trošku jinak. Třeba zrovna další sobota mě docela poznamenala.

 Jak bylo jaro, tak jsme šíleně rádi sedávali na lavičkách na Štěpánce. Muchlovali jsme se tam, Kristýnka pořád poskakovala, jak znovu chodila, tak měla v sobě neskutečný energie. Mladá veselá holka. Chvílemi jsem ji nestačil a hrozně mě to štvalo, protože já měl být ten silnější a rychlejší. "Zdaaaar, co vy tady, cukrujete, cukrujete?": ozve se za námi a já nevím, jak mám nepozorovaně vyndat ruku z kalhotek své milé. Něco blekotám a Tomáš se mi směje. Zrovna korzuje se svým novým klukem. Říkejme mu třeba Kamil, to je koneckonců jméno, které v devadesátých letech mívali teplí bratři poměrně často. Pánové tedy byli hodně odvážní. Vyjít si tenkrát dva kluci, zavěšení do sebe a objímající se, to chtělo velký koule, haha.

A Kamil si hned přisedl a byl hrozně usměvavej a rozevlátej. Přesně typ člověka, kterýho když potkáte, tak ho musíte mít rádi. Když se o někom řekne, že má dobrou duši, tak to byl slabej odvar proti tomu, jak na mě působil. Mluvil hodně, ale na rozdíl od mnohých jiných měla jeho slova obsah a smysl. Nejsem zrovna z těch, kdo by rád a často někoho následoval, ale líbilo se mi, co říkal. Asi jsem byl zrovna ve stavu, kdy jsem podobné věty potřeboval slyšet. Šli jsem do hospody, klábosili a jak bylo tenkrát mým dobrým zvykem, zabrousili jsme až k filozofii. Většinou mě pak už nikdo neposlouchal, ale tentokrát to bylo jiné. Kamil nejedl maso a byl budhista. Je fakt, že nejdřív mě to trošku vyděsilo, ale když jsme všechno rozebrali dopodrobna, tak jsem zjistil, že to je snad jediná víra a náboženství, která mi nevadí.

Hele, bylo to něco novýho. Tak trošku záhadnýho. Měl třeba doma malou svatyni, s tlustým Buddhou a několika obrázky, které mi vůbec nic neříkaly. Kluci spolu chodili a o některých věcech bych raději nevěděl, ale bylo mi s nima dobře. Na nic si nehráli, ty jejich přihřátý řeči byly nakonec taky vtipný a tak jsme s nima a holkama často vyráželi ven. Na několik týdnů jsem propadl vegetariánství. Hergot jo, přečetl jsem si pár knížek o budhismu, dokonce jsem absolvoval několik sezení s Kamilem a jeho kamarády, kteří na tom byli stejně. Oni byli všichni tak neskutečně milí a přívětiví, že jsem to do té doby nezažil. Chodil jsem normálně do práce, ale najednou mi přišli všichni všude okolo napnutí, pořád se za něčím honili, hromadili prachy, lovili druhé pohlaví a s teplejma budhistama byl klid. Nikdo z nich si ke mě nic nedovolil, ale lidsky jsme si rozuměli.

Ona je víra hodně soukromá věc a budhismus má v sobě pro mě dodnes určitou přitažlivost. Jenže to i jiná náboženství. Já nikdy nebyl takovej ten jakože satanista, co by rád vypaloval kostely. Mě to vždycky přišlo děsně vtipný. Já vím, k metalu to patří, ale většinou mi to připadalo a dodnes připadá jako póza. Jsem toho názoru, že si každej má dělat a věřit čemu chce, pokud tím neomezuje někoho jiného. Vždyť na desateru není nic špatného a křesťané nám dali během staletí i spoustu dobrého. Byl jsem mladý a hledal jsem. Za komoušů bylo všechno zakázaný, materialismus se revolucí přetavil v ještě větší hromadění majetku. Sehnal jsem si zásadní knihy od všech velkých náboženství a přečetl si je. Se spoustou věcí jsem souhlasil, hodně se mi jich nelíbilo, ale budhismus měl něco do sebe. Koneckonců, beatníci a spousta kapel se v něm také zhlédla.

Žádný modlitby, žádný zaříkávání, byl to pro mě spíš stav duše. Na základě zažitých zkušeností mi připadala myšlenka pomíjivosti, vnitřního klidu a neútočení hrozně přitažlivá. Nějaký čas jsem s budhismem hodně koketoval. Jenže pak jsem všem okolo začal připadat jako bez energie. Štvala je moje flegmatičnost. Nikam jsem se neposouval, jenom jakoby přežíval. Buddha ze sídliště měl v mnohém pravdu, ale nežili jsme v Indii, ale mezi paneláky v dělnickém městě v Čechách. Začalo mi chybět vepřo knedlo zelo, připadal jsem si chcíplej, bez cíle. Když jsem si totiž srovnal životní filozofii, kterou uctívali mí předci, která byla osvědčená lety zkušeností v prostředí, ve kterém jsem žil já, tak se nedalo nic dělat. Bohužel, díky tomu, že jsem byl zahleděný do svýho vnitřního světa a víc řešil sám sebe, než ostatní, tak jsme se začali s Kristýnkou odcizovat čím dál tím víc.

Na Kamila, Buddhu ze sídliště, dodnes vzpomínám hrozně rád. Je to skvělej kluk, kterej mi otevřel obzory. Naučil mě spoustu nových věcí. Párkrát jsem se kvůli němu i porval, hrozně mě vždycky štvalo, že mu ostatní nadávali. Že je jinej, že je teplej, že se pořád usmívá. To totiž některý lidi neskutečně vytáčí. Možná jsem mu i trošku záviděl, protože on měl svoji víru, měl možnost se někam uchýlit. Já jsem začal zase jíst maso, chodit do hospody, číst víc sci-fi než filozofii a jediné chvíle, kdy jsem byl doopravdy v pohodě, tak bylo u poslechu oblíbených kapel. Nepotřeboval jsem Buddhu, ani jinou víru. Jednu už jsem vlastně dávno měl. Byl jí metal. Zdá se to divný, ale bylo tomu tak. Se sluchátky na uších jsem se rád toulal ve svém světě. Světě, kde se odehrávaly ty nejlepší koncerty, kde jsem uměl zázrakem perfektně hrát na kytaru, zpívat i bubnovat. Kristýnka mě poprvé několikrát poslala do prdele a já nevěděl proč. Ale o tom až jindy.


Vize je taková, že každou neděli vyjde jeden příběh (pokud mi do toho tedy něco nevleze). Všechny pak budou postupně doplňovány zde (pravý sloupec na stránkách):

Chodby undergroundu jsou hluboké a nehostinné. Ze stěn stéká hnis a v kobkách se dějí věci, které zůstávají normálním smrtelníkům nepřístupné. Je to tak lepší, některé obrazy by ve vás vyvolaly stavy dávení a hnusu. Mučená lidská těla prokletých, puch a strach nejsou zrovna věci, které by normální člověk vyhledával. Jenže tady se jedná o hudbu a tam to mám jinak nastavené. Třeba takoví švédští GRAVE DEFILER se stali takovým malým tipem pro vás.

Každý den se setkávám s několika desítkami demonahrávek, které musím roztřídit, oddělit zrno od plev a vybrat ty, kterým jsem ochotný věnovat svůj čas. Je to drobná mravenčí práce, kterou lidé nevidí. Dělám to ale rád, protože si myslím, že dobrá hudba se musí podporovat. GRAVE DEFILER je trojice šílenců, kteří hrají od roku 2009. A stejně jako já mají rádi starý prašivý death metal z devadesátých let. Vítejte v nejhlubším undergroundu!
GRAVE DEFILER hrají jednoduchý, nebál bych se napsat primitivní death metal, který je nasáklý záhadnými chorobami. Připomíná mi demonahrávky z mého mládí, případně soundtrack k nějakému hororovému filmu na VHS. Parta mladých kluků, kterým imponují staré postupy i přístup k muzice. Skladby samozřejmě nejsou dokonalé, pro mnohé budou příliš špinavé, ale mají v sobě nepopiratelnou temnou atmosféru. Něco jako útěk před vrahem v opuštěném lese. Jen si to představte. Někde v mlze se ukrývá šílenec s velkým nožem a vy máte dvě možnosti. Buď si přidat volume na "Three Tales of Dark Gods, Corpses and Rotting Horses" a utéct a nebo propadnout hrdlem. Rád se podobnými demonahrávkami přehrabávám, občas v nich totiž objevím pořádně shnilé kousky. Není to jen death metal, ve který GRAVE DEFILER věří, těch vlivů je více. Všechny jsou zpuchřelé a tajemné. Prašivý smrtící kov, který vám prořízne tepnu!

Tajemná, ošklivě mokvající, smutně jedovatá, taková je novinka GRAVE DEFILER. Švédská pocta záhrobí se vydařila. Některé nápady jsou možná až moc dlouhé, ale jako celek mi nahrávka připomíná starý, černobílý hororový film. Vznešeně smutné melodie, stěny z kytar, pavučiny, utkané ze zbytků světla. Tohle všechno zde nalezneme. Pokud byste chtěli překapat a následně ukovat kousky tmy, GRAVE DEFILER vám budou zdatnými průvodci. Rád se touto deskou nechávám unášet do nekonečných bažin zapomnění. Pokud se rádi bojíte a milujete napětí, vydejte se s námi na dlouhý výlet do tajemných močálů věčnosti. Mysterious, badly weeping, sadly poisonous, such is the news of GRAVE DEFILER. Swedish tribute to the crypt is a success. Some ideas are perhaps too long, but as a whole reminds me the recording an old, black and white horror film. Noble sad melodies, guitars' walls, cobwebs woven from the rest of light. All of these can be found here. If you would like to filter and subsequently forged pieces of darkness, GRAVE DEFILERwill be good guides.
