Někdy se člověk ocitne v situaci, kdy jej obestře nekonečný smutek. Když ztratíte někoho blízkého. Čím nahradit prázdné místo? Pořád tomu nemůžete uvěřit a nemáte na nic chuť. Jakoby se mysl i tělo ponořily do temnoty a vy jste nahlédli na onen svět. Setkání se smrtí vždycky bolí. Silný chlap najednou chce být sám a zakrývá lesklé oči. Nepomáhá chlast, nepomáhá vůbec nic. Možná jen hudba, ta občas dokáže zalepit prázdná místa.

Přesně tohle se mi stalo u nové desky švédských melodiků AT THE GATES. Odešel mi dlouholetý kamarád a já nevěděl, jak dál. Nechtělo se mi poslouchat nic nového, utápěl jsem se několik dní v prázdnotě. "The Nightmare of Being" mě ale vytrhlo z bolesti a pomohlo mi opět se postavit na nohy. K muzice si musíme vypěstovat osobní vztah, na neosobní popisné hodnocená zkrátka nevěřím. Já i můj kamarád jsme muziku vždycky poslouchali srdcem.

AT THE GATES se opět povedlo namíchat mix melancholie, melodického death metalu, tradičních postupů i progresivních pasáží, kterými kapela poslední roky oplývá. Výsledek je pro moji maličkost doslova ohromující. Vznáším se spolu s kapelou na svěžích, neotřelých temných melodiích, užívám si vznešenost, eleganci, kterými tahle smečka vždy převyšovala ostatní. Z desky je cítit, že ji skládali zkušení muzikanti (Tomas Lindberg je za mikrofonem výborný!), kteří se stále dokáží vyhnout rutině a napsat motivy, které jsou ostré a chladné jako břitva ve vašem břiše. O zvuku, obalu a dalších základních věcech netřeba mluvit, vše je v nejlepším pořádku. Mě se ale nejvíc stejně líbí, že mě Švédové nenechají ani na chvilku v klidu. Jednou jsem napnutý, jindy smutný, mám vztek. Ano, novinka se mi usadila vzadu v hlavě, stejně jako staré nahrávky, které máme všichni tolik rádi. Líbí se mi hrozně i přístup, celkové vyznění a dojem, jakým na mě "The Nightmare of Being" působí. Vzpomínám na vše hezké, na hádky, prolétám se nočními můrami. Každý starý metalista tohle zná. Přinesete si domů CD, zatemníte pokoj a odstřihnete celý svět. Pak se ocitnete v jiné dimenzi, v krvavé řece, která vás pohltí. A přesně tohle se mi stalo i s novým albem AT THE GATES. Neexistuje nic jiného, jenom muzika. Melodický death metal, který vám vytrhne srdce z těla!

Sometimes one finds oneself in a situation where one is overwhelmed by endless sadness. When you lose someone close to you. What can you do to fill the void? You still can't believe it and you don't feel like doing anything. It's as if your mind and body are plunged into darkness and you've glimpsed the other world. Death always hurts. A strong man suddenly wants to be alone and covers his shiny eyes. Booze doesn't help, nothing helps. Maybe just music, sometimes it can fill in the blanks.

That's exactly what happened to me with the new album by Swedish melodic AT THE GATES. A longtime friend of mine passed away and I didn't know how to go on. I didn't want to listen to anything new, I was drowning in emptiness for days. But "The Nightmare of Being" pulled me out of my pain and helped me get back on my feet. We have to cultivate a personal relationship with music, I simply don't believe in impersonal descriptive ratings. My friend and I have always listened to music with our hearts.

AT THE GATES have once again managed to mix a mix of melancholy, melodic death metal, traditional methods and progressive passages, which the band has been brimming with in recent years. The result is literally overwhelming for my little one. I soar along with the band on lush, unadulterated dark melodies, enjoying the grandeur, the elegance that has always made this pack superior to others. You can sense from the record that it was composed by experienced musicians (Tomas Lindberg is excellent behind the mic!) who still manage to avoid routine and write themes that are razor-sharp and cool in your gut. No need to talk about the sound, the cover art and other basic stuff, everything is in the best order. But what I like most anyway is that the Swedes don't let me down for a moment. Sometimes I'm tense, sometimes I'm sad, I'm angry. Yes, the novelty has settled in the back of my mind, just like the old records we all love so much. I also like terribly the approach, the overall sound and the impression "The Nightmare of Being" has on me. It makes me think of all the good things, the arguments, the nightmares I go through. Every old metalhead knows this. You bring home a CD, darken the room and cut out the world. Then you find yourself in another dimension, a bloody river that swallows you up. And that's exactly what happened to me with the new album AT THE GATES. There's nothing else but the music. Melodic death metal that will rip your heart out!
