Já vím, v dnešní podivné době jsou lidé, kteří tomuto autorovi nemohou přijít na jméno. Pravdou je, že býval přesvědčeným komunistou. Abych pravdu řekl, tak mi to bylo kdysi na plzeňských kolejích úplně jedno. Bylo pár let po revoluci a s kamarády jsme hltali všechny knihy, které jsou něčím jiné. Znáte to, člověk je mladý a rád objevuje. Chodili jsme a měli šály i v létě, někteří z nás dokonce barety. Což tedy bylo trošku zvláštní, protože někteří z nás byli metalisty, jiní punkáči a další vyznávali jehom intelektuální rok. Všichni jsme se neustále scházeli po hospodách a dokola distutovali nejen o knhách. Pamatuji si to jako dnes. Bylo šero, smog a v ulicích smrděly kanály. Šinu si to po Klatovské, protože nemám na tramvajenku. Potkám spolužáka Michala. Kam jdeš? Odpovím, že na salát a rohlík. Pak bych měl jít do školy. Serem na to, ne? Jsou to jen přednášky. Zapadli jsme do bufáče a pak nám někdo poslal piva. Nakyslej gambáč, ale po ránu dobrý.
V rohu seděl Kára. Kluk odněkud z Vansdorfu, který stejně jako my moc nevěděl, proč je na strojárně. On hodně hulil. Byl jedním z prvních, co si pěstoval vlastní trávu. Byl její velký propagátor a nám přišel totálně mimo. Vyhulenej až běda. Ale jeho máma byla lékařka, kterou za komára dost šikanovali. Nevím, jaký býval underground ve Vansdorfu, ale asi dobrý, protože Kára vždycky vzal mámě z knihovny nějakou dobrotu. Tohle si přečtěte sráči. Se poserete. Předal mi Katyni s tím, že jestli mu jí do čtvrtka nevrátím, zabije mě. Asi to tak nemyslel, ale míval záchvaty vzteku. Jednou jsem ho viděl, jak mlátí hlavou o zeď na chodbě. Měl čelo celé od krve a tak jsem mu věřil. Další důvod, proč nejít do školy. Dáme ještě dvě, ale nejsou fakt prachy, tak jdeme na kolej. Knihu si beru jako první. A od začátku mě poměrně šokuje. Tenkrát se sice člověk dostal občas k nějakému hororu, ale tohle bylo fakt psycho.
Mnohé odradí podivný jazyk, na který si musíte nejdříve zvyknout. I po letech jsem se občas ztrácel. Pravdou ale je, že téma je natolik zvláštní a divné, že jsem se nemohl odtrhnout. Slabší povahy budou možná i zvracet. Některé způsoby mučení, které se Lízinka Tachecí učí, jsou opravdu odporné. Osobně jsem proto, aby byli vrazi popraveni a dovedl bych pochopit, že tuhle hnusnou práci musí někdo dělat, ale mučení je jiná věc. Z principu se mi to hnusí. Mimochodem, celou dobu jsem měl pocit, že se Kohout svým způsobem trošku inspiroval u ruských autorů (Bulgakov). Možná je to ale jen můj pocit. Knihu jsem četl hned, co jsem dorazil na pokoj. Odpoledne se vrátila ze školy moje holka a protože jsme byli mladí, tak na to chtěla vlítnout. Nemohl jsem, pořád jsem měl v hlavě některé pasáže a nemohl jsem na ně přestat myslet. Uvědomme si, že tenkrát nebyly ještě zprávy plné uřezaných hlav a násilí nebylo tolik zesměšňováno a glorifikováno. Taky mi bylo dvacet a i když jsem už viděl ledacos, stále mě podobné příběhy šokovaly.
Teprve teď, po mnoha letech jsem více pochopil, že je kniha napsaná satiricky, s nadhledem, že je kritikou lůzy. Dnes už mě tolik nešokovaly způsoby mučení, ale spíše chlad některých postav. Bohužel, najednou se mi spousta pasáží spojovala s tím, co jsem za poslední dobu slyšel a viděl. Ve své podstatě jsme stále zvířata, která když dojde na lámání chleba, dokáží být hodně krutá. Vlastně by se dalo také napsat, že Katyně po letech hodně uzrála, chápu ji zcela jinak. Nebo lépe, oceňuji na ní více věcí, než když jsem byl mladý. Pokud jste citliví a vadí vám krev, tak tenhle příběh nečtěte. Vlastně ani nevím proč jsem se ke knížce vrátil. Možná jsem chtěl zkusit, co se mnou udělá po letech. Nebo to je tím, že poslední roky dost často vzpomínám. Nevím, ale je prostým faktem, že tahle kniha je mojí součástí. Dost často na ní myslím, když sleduji z povzdálí události posledních let.
Vlastně ani nevím, jestli vám Katyni doporučit. Sám autor o ní napsal, že s ní strávil sedm let, že některé pasáže doslova prozvracel. Je to hnus a lidská špína, ale také je to velmi zajímavá porce literatury. Co dodat? Myslím, že tentokrát nic. Nevím, jestli vás můj dnešní tip zaujme. Faktem ale je, že Katyně má co říct i dnes. Děkuji za pozornost. Mějte se co nejlépe.
Hlavní hrdinka je Lízinka Tachecí, kterou nechtějí přijmout na žádnou ze středních škol. Její ctižádostivá matka se snaží ze všech sil, aby její dcera mohla mít maturitu. Nakonec se dostane do prvního ročníku nově založené školy pro katy, tzv. SUPOV (Střední učiliště popravních věd). Studium ve škole je jednoroční a hlavní příběhová linie románu kopíruje důležité události školního roku.
Vždy máš nakonec jen dvě možnosti. Buď tě uloží do studené země a nebo shoříš v plamenech. Sedím v temné márnici a prohlížím si mrtvá těla. Někdo má na tváři klid a připadá mi, že se dokonce usmívá. Jiný je zohavený a musel za svého života hodně trpět. Sednu si, pustím si novou desku kanadských CRUEL FATE a rozmlouvám s dušemi prokletých. Tohle je přesně druh hudby, kterou budu vždy podporovat. Je vlastně jedno, jak jednou budu pohřbený. Hudba je jenom jedna. V mojí krvi koluje prašivý death metal.
S tvorbou této smečky jsem se poprvé setkal v roce 2019, u příležitosti vydání jejich debutového alba "A Quaternary of Decrepit Night Mares" (odkaz na recenzi a rozhovor naleznete dole pod článkem). Stalo se tenkrát na dlouhou dobu mým průvodcem v záhrobí. Novinka je volným pokračováním nastavené morbidní cesty. Opět se jedná o absolutní temnotu, nahrubo nasekanou tmu a chlad. Takhle nějak si představuji, že se má hrát poctivý smrtící kov!
Najednou je v márnici velmi živo. Mrtvoly vylézají z rakví a tančí do zběsilého rytmu. Kýváme se a vzduchem se najednou vznáší nejen pach rozkládajících se tkání, ale i ostré riffy, chorobný vokál a bicí, které vám vystřelí mozek z hlavy. CRUEL FATE jedou kupředu jako buldozer, který nelze zastavit. Představte si pradávný hrob z devadesátých let minulého století, hromadu shnilých kostí a lebek. Tisíce vzpomínek, tisíce způsobů smrti. Pánové se volně inspirovali u smeček typu JUNGLE ROT, BOLT THROWER, MEMORIAM, BODYFARM, GRAVE, ASPHYX,, MASSACRE. A udělali to velmi elegantně a zkušeně. Přidávají velkou porci svých vlastních nápadů. Mám to nastavené tak, že musím z nahrávek cítit opravdovost, skladby mě musí bavit a rozdrásat obličej do krve. Kanaďanům se to opět povedlo na výbornou. Je to i díky skvělému prašivému zvuku, je to díky atmosféře, která je velmi podmanivá. Opravdu se cítím jako bych navštívil starý hřbitov. Uprostřed noci. Otevřu rezavou bránu a vstoupím dovnitř. Stovky křížů, zamířím rovnou do márnice. Zapínám znovu play a těším se, že dnešní noc bude hodně dlouhá. Přiznám se bez mučení, já v dnešním podivném světě potřebuji alba, jako je "Destin Cruel". Pomáhají mi přežít. Vždy máš nakonec jen dvě možnosti. Buď tě uloží do studené země a nebo shoříš v plamenech. Sedím v temné márnici a prohlížím si mrtvá těla. Někdo má na tváři klid a připadá mi, že se dokonce usmívá. I first encountered the work of this pack in 2019, on the occasion of the release of their debut album "A Quaternary of Decrepit Night Mares" (link to review and interview below). It became my guide to the afterlife for a long time back then. The new album is a loose continuation of the morbid path set. Once again it is absolute darkness, coarsely chopped darkness and coldness. This is how I imagine honest death metal should be played!
Suddenly the morgue is very busy. The corpses come out of their coffins and dance to a frantic rhythm. We sway and suddenly the air is filled with the smell of decomposing tissue, but also with sharp riffs, sick vocals and drums that will blow your brains out. CRUEL FATE drive forward like a bulldozer that cannot be stopped. Imagine an ancient grave from the 1990s, a pile of rotten bones and skulls. Thousands of memories, thousands of ways to die. Gentlemen were loosely inspired by packs like JUNGLE ROT, BOLT THROWER, MEMORIAM, BODYFARM, GRAVE, ASPHYX,, MASSACRE. And they did it very elegantly and expertly. They add a big portion of their own ideas. I have it set up so that I have to make the records feel real, the songs have to entertain me and tear my face to blood. Once again, the Canadians have done it to perfection. It's also thanks to the great dusty sound, it's thanks to the atmosphere, which is very captivating. I really feel like I'm visiting an old graveyard. In the middle of the night. I open the rusty gate and step inside. Hundreds of crosses, I head straight for the morgue. I turn the play back on and look forward to a very long night tonight. I'll admit without torture, I need albums like "Destin Cruel" in today's strange world. They help me survive. Stejně je to zvláštní. Co po nás jednou zbyde? Dívám se do tmy a na stole stojí urna. Je na ní moje jméno. Hromádka popela ve vesmíru. Možná ještě duše, která bude navěky bloudit prostorem a časem. Vypadá to, že nikdy nenajdu klid. Až navěky, amen. Stejně je to zvláštní, co ve mě dokáže některá hudba probudit za představy a fantazie. Možná je to tím, že se vrátili britští PLAGUE RIDER. Kapela, která hraje velmi zajímavě, jinak, originálně. Alespoň tak vnímám jejich novou desku "Intensities" já.
Už jste o tom někdy přemýšleli? Chcete hnít spoustu let v zemi nebo raději shoříte v plamenech? Když poslouchám tuhle kapelu, tak jsem spíše příznivcem ohně. Novinka je hodně intenzivním, neklidným albech plným zajímavých death metalových kompozic. Zhasněte všechny světla, přidejte hlasitost a vychutnejte si ozvěny, které nejsou z tohoto světa.
Je to samozřejmě muzika, která se těžko poslouchá. Je nutné mnoho společných setkání, aby vám pronikla do žil. Nicméně, osobně se mi přístup, jakým tahle smečka tvoří a skládá líbí. Hodně se mi líbí zvuk, pod kterým je podepsán Colin Marston (Gorguts). Kapela si vůbec dala na formální věci velmi záležet. Není divu, členy jsou muzikanti, kteří už mají ledacos za sebou. Vzpomeňme jejich působení v kapelách jako LIVE BURIAL, HORRIFIED, DYBBUK. Fanoušek se tak může soustředit na jednotlivé nápady, na atmosféru, na proměnlivé nálady, změny tempa, složité pasáže. Jako celek vám možná bude nové album připadat zpočátku roztříštěné. Nenechte se ale mýlit. Deska má v sobě něco zvláštního, neotřelého, neklidného, co se vám dostane do krve, pokud necháte svoji fantazii rozlétnout. Myslím si, že pokud jsou častými hosty ve vašich přehrávačích smečky typu GORGUTS, ATHEIST, MORBID ANGEL, DISKORD, PYRRHON, ARTIFICIAL BRAIN, budete určitě spokojeni. Možná pak budete také přemýšlet o věcech, které jsou mezi naším a oním světem. Na podobnou hudbu musím mít náladu. Klid a ticho. Teprve potom vynikne jejich síla naplno. Of course, it's music that's hard to listen to. It takes many meetings together to get it into your veins. However, I personally like the approach this pack takes to creating and composing. I like a lot the sound that Colin Marston (Gorguts) is behind. The band in general has put a lot of thought into the formal stuff. No wonder, the members are musicians who have been through a lot. Let's remember their time in bands like LIVE BURIAL, HORRIFIED, DYBBUK. So the fan can focus on individual ideas, on the atmosphere, on changing moods, tempo changes, complex passages. As a whole, the new album may seem fragmented at first. But don't be mistaken. The album has something special, novel, restless, that will get into your blood if you let your imagination run wild. I think that if you often have GORGUTS, ATHEIST, MORBID ANGEL, DISKORD, PYRRHON, ARTIFICIAL BRAIN in your players, you will be satisfied. Maybe then you will also think about the things that are between our world and the other world. I have to be in the mood for music like this. Peace and quiet. Only then will their full power come through. PLAGUE RIDER has proven to be a good one for me. Still, it's strange. What's left of us? I look into the darkness and there's an urn on the table. Pamatuješ si jenom hlad, chlad a temnotu. Občas tě mučili a ty si nevěděl proč? Neznal si nic hezkého, normálního. Byl si otrokem zvrácených chutí šílenců. Přesto si věřil ve světlo, přesto si doufal, že jednou bude lépe. Konečně si roztrhl okovy, konečně ses zbavil řetězů. Všichni se na tebe dívali jako na zrůdu, která přišla z pekla. Připadal sis jako prokletý. Měl si stigma už když ses narodil.
Tématem páté dlouhohrající desky holandských deathařů BLOODPHEMY je příběh malého chlapce, který byl celé své dětství týrán a neznal nic jiného než strach a bolest. Ocitne se v "normálním" světě, kterému ale nerozumí. Myslel si, že získá svobodu a bude volný. Jenže kolem něj je jenom nenávist a lidská špína. Asi tušíte, jak to dopadne. Ano, začne toužit po pomstě, začne toužit po krvi. Je to silné téma, stejně jako hudba, která vás roztrhá na kusy.
Přiznám se, že je velmi příjemné být fanouškem téhle smečky. Pokud totiž jako já uctíváte staré smrtící modly z devadesátých let minulého století a rádi se pohybujete v hlubokém undergroundu, potom jste zde správně a kapela vám dodá přesně to, co všichni chceme - reálnou hudební smrt. Songy zní velmi uvěřitelně, krutě a brutálně. Zároveň, a to se mi na téhle kapele opravdu líbí, zde naleznete i velké množství zajímavých a chladných melodií, které se vám doslova zadřou pod kůži. Album jsem poslouchal stále dokola a pokaždé mě dokázalo nabít temnou energií. BLOODPHEMY jsou mistři ve svém oboru a potvrdil jsem si to i na koncertě. Byla to neskutečná smršť. Není to ale jenom dobré řemeslo a poctivá práce, které tahle smečka odvádí. Ve skladbách je ještě něco navíc, což holandské tmáře odlišuje od jiných. Atmosféra, rukopis, chcete-li. Nahrávka drží velmi kompaktně pohromadě a dobře se poslouchá. "Dawn of Malevolence" se mi otisklo do hlavy jako cejch. Hodně jsem nad tématem desky přemýšlel a užíval si tak nejen hudbu, ale i texty, které jsou opravdu propracované. Navíc mě podobná témata zajímají. Povedený je i obal (MetalCover.art), který krásně doplňuje náladu celého díla. Mám rád, když z muziky cítím, že je zahrána od srdce. Poctivě a opravdově. A za BLOODPHEMY bych dal ruku do ohně. Asi se shodneme na tom, že dnešní svět je podivný a šílený. Jsem rád, že se nahrávají podobná alba. Pomáhají mi přežít. Pamatuji si jenom hlad, chlad a temnotu. Konečně jsem roztrhl okovy, konečně jsem se zbavil řetězů. Krví nasáklý, mokvající death metal ze staré školy, který vás strhne do hlubin černých lidských myšlenek! Zničující masakr! Chlad a temnota!

The theme of the fifth full-length album from Dutch deathtars BLOODPHEMY is the story of a young boy who was abused his entire childhood and knew nothing but fear and pain. He finds himself in a "normal" world that he doesn't understand. He thought he would gain freedom and be free. But all around him is hatred and human filth. I guess you can guess how it's gonna turn out. Yes, he's gonna want revenge, he's gonna want blood. It's a powerful theme, like the music, that will tear you apart.
I admit it's very nice to be a fan of this pack. Because if, like me, you worship the old death idols of the nineties and like to be in the deep underground, then you've come to the right place and this band will deliver exactly what we all want - real musical death. The songs sound very believable, cruel and brutal. At the same time, and this is what I really like about this band, you will also find a large number of interesting and cool melodies that will literally get under your skin. I listened to the album over and over again and it managed to charge me with dark energy every time. BLOODPHEMY are masters in their field and I confirmed it at the concert. It was an incredible whirlwind. But it's not just good craftsmanship and honest work that this pack does. There's something extra in the songs that sets the Dutch darkies apart from others. Atmosphere, handwriting, if you will. The recording holds together very compactly and is easy to listen to. "Dawn of Malevolence" is imprinted in my head like a brand. I thought a lot about the theme of the record and enjoyed not only the music but also the lyrics, which are really elaborate. Moreover, I am interested in similar themes. The cover art (MetalCover.art) is also very nice, which beautifully complements the mood of the whole work. I like it when I feel that the music is played from the heart. Honest and real. And I would give my hand in fire for BLOODPHEMY. I think we can agree that the world today is weird and crazy. I'm glad that albums like this are being recorded. They help me survive. All I remember is the hunger, the cold and the darkness. I finally broke the shackles, I finally broke the chains. Blood-soaked, old-school death metal that takes you into the depths of black human thoughts! Devastating carnage! Cold and dark!
Jeden můj známý, který je matematik, tvrdí, že brzy dojde k restartu. Lidé se budou pomalu vracet k tomu základnímu, obyčejnému. Možná ale nastane apokalypsa a budeme se toulat ulicemi bez cíle. Nemrtví budou požírat dávno mrtvé. Svět zahalí temnota a začneme znovu. Od začátku. Vrátíme se po časové ose zpět. A nebo také ne. Uvidíme. Zatím se můžeme vydávat na podobné výlety s hudbou, která mě vždy dokáže přenést do jiných dimenzí. Mezi shnilé mrtvoly, na staré pohřebiště. O amerických MAUL jsem již na našich stránkách psal.
Bylo to u příležitosti loňské nahrávky "Seraphic Punishment", která se stala na dlouhý čas mým průvodcem v záhrobí. Album jsem si opravdu užíval. Letos pánové přicházejí s novým EP, které obsahuje tři nové skladby. Z toho jednu naleznete pouze na kazetě, kterou vám doporučuji zakoupit. Tohle je totiž pravý, nefalšovaný kult smrti. Nic pro slabé povahy, ani různé pozéry a falešné fanoušky.
MAUL mají velký dar napsat skladby, které rezonují uvnitř mé lebky. Opravdu si připadám, že mi v mozku hlodá zuřivý červ. Rozkládám se pomalu, hniju zaživa. Moc dobře vím, že apokalypsa už dávno začala. Alespoň v našich hlavách a na ulicích, po kterých se procházejí zombie. Američané jsou opět velmi mrtvolní, morbidní. Přicházejí se skvělým zvukem (Adam Tucker - mixing, mastering, recording) i stylovým obalem (S. Deloria Black Wolf). Líbí se mi, že kapela i label udělali vše pro to, abychom byli spokojeni. Je to poctivá hrobnická práce. Dva hřeby plus jeden, v podobě ostrých songů, které vám budou zatlučeny do rakve. Někdy, když sleduji současný svět, padá na mě splín. Chce se mi odejít mezi stíny. Nikdy to samozřejmě neudělám, ale musím si pokaždé pustit muziku, jako je ta na "Desecration and Enchantment". Drásá mi obličej do krve, pálí a žhne. Letos se jedná opravdu o velmi povedenou záležitost ve stylu třeba takových IMMOLATION, INCANTATION, AUTOPSY, CARCASS, BOLT THROWER, TOMB MOLD, OUTER HEAVEN. Smrt je velmi blízko a osobně se mi nejvíc líbí doomové nálady, které poletují kolem celého EP jako můry kolem lampy. Dívám se kolem sebe a mám pocit, že nemrtví požírají dávno mrtvé. Svět zahalila temnota a možná začneme znovu. Od začátku. Vrátíme se po časové ose zpět. A nebo také ne. Než se tak stane, budu poslouchat tohle EP stále dokola. Je totiž skvělé po všech stránkách. Temný, hnilobný death metal ve značném stádiu rozkladu! Bolestné ozvěny ze světa před apokalypsou!

We'll go back along the timeline. Or not. We'll see. In the meantime, we can take similar trips with music that always manages to transport me to other dimensions. Among the rotting corpses, to an old burial ground. I've already written about American MAUL on our website.
It was on the occasion of last year's recording "Seraphic Punishment", which became my guide to the beyond for a long time. I really enjoyed the album. This year, the gentlemen are coming out with a new EP that features three new tracks. One of which can only be found on cassette, which I recommend you purchase. This is a true, unadulterated death cult. Nothing for the faint of heart, or the various posers and fake fans.
MAUL have a great gift for writing songs that resonate inside my skull. I really do feel like I have a raging worm gnawing at my brain. I'm slowly decomposing, rotting alive. I know full well that the apocalypse has long since begun. At least in our heads and on the streets where the zombies walk. Americans are very dead again, very morbid. They come with a great sound (Adam Tucker - mixing, mastering, recording) and a stylish cover (S. Deloria Black Wolf). I like that the band and the label did everything to make us happy. It's an honest gravedigger's work. Two nails plus one, in the form of sharp songs that will be hammered into your coffin. Sometimes when I watch the world today, I get a full moon. I want to leave among the shadows. I'll never do it, of course, but I have to put on music like the one on "Desecration and Enchantment" every time. It scratches my face to the blood, it burns and glows. This year it's a very good thing in the style of such bands as IMMOLATION, INCANTATION, AUTOPSY, CARCASS, BOLT THROWER, TOMB MOLD, OUTER HEAVEN. Death is very close and I personally like the doom moods that fly around the whole EP like moths around a lamp. I look around me and feel like the undead are eating the long dead. The world is shrouded in darkness, and maybe we'll start again. From the beginning. Let's go back down the timeline. Or maybe not. Until that happens, I'm gonna listen to this EP over and over again. Because it's great in every way. Dark, rotten death metal in a major state of decay! Painful echoes from the world before the apocalypse!
Krásně udržovaná zahrada za domem, který připomínal splněný sen. Hrály si zde děti, nevinné a bezbranné. Přesto se vzduchem vznášelo něco ošklivého, zlého. Když jsem poprvé kopl do země, myslel jsem si, že se jedná o zvířecí kosti. Jenže jsem se mýlil. Slyšel jsem nářek mučených, cítil jsem jejich bolest. Měli ho všichni rádi. Pořád se usmíval. Pod povrchem se ale ukrývalo zlo. Absolutní zlo a temnota.
S hudbou to mám hodně podobné. Vždy si sednu a nechám jí na sebe působit. U australských death doomařů CARCINOID jsem už trošku věděl, co od nich mohu čekat. Minulé album "Metastatic Declination" z roku 2019 totiž bylo velmi častým hostem při mých večerních seancích. Odkaz na recenzi najdete dole pod článkem. Letošní novinka je volným pokračováním morbidních rituálů. Jedná se o hudbu, při které vám zmrzne krev v žilách.
Pánové a dáma opět odvedli perfektní hrobnickou práci. Ve své tvorbě nadále odkazují na kapely typu CIANIDE, AUTOPSY, UNDERGANG, FETID, WINTER, CELTIC FROST, ANATOMIA. A dělají to s nadšením a odhodláním. Věřím jim každý tón, každou notu. Je pro mě, starého metalového psa, hrozně příjemné se s nimi toulat záhrobím. Navštěvovat dávno opuštěné hrobky plné shnilých mrtvých těl. Povedený obal (Necrofrost) i zvuk jen perfektně doplňují temné a mocné motivy. Někdy se mi zdají ošklivé sny. Exhumuji v nich hroby, které jsou plné prokletých těl. Poslouchám u toho desky, jako je "Encomium to Extinction". Kombinace tradičního, prokletého doomu a prašivého death metalu mi dělá dobře na mé zkažené duši od konce osmdesátých let minulého století. A tuhle desku mě opravdu baví poslouchat. Má v sobě totiž vše potřebné pro staré rituály. Nedivil bych se, kdyby někteří fanoušci potkali při společných setkáních s touto nahrávkou svůj vlastní stín, svoje děsivé svědomí, své noční můry. Všichni moc dobře víme, že existuje ještě jeden odvrácený svět. V něm muselo být letošní EP nahráváno. Smrdí totiž prašivinou, špínou a hnisem. Pro mě je vždy důležité, aby mě hudba rozdrásala obličej do krve. A CARCINOID se to povedlo na výbornou. Opravdu stojím na krásné zahradě. Dole pode mnou jsou pochována těla nebožáků, kteří museli před smrtí hodně trpět. Atmosféra je hodně podobná, jako na téhle desce. Mokvající, shnilý, prašivý doom death metal, u kterého ucítíte pach a chlad prokletých pohřebišť!

It's very similar with music. I always sit down and let it affect me. With Australian death doomsters CARCINOID, I already knew a little bit what to expect from them. In fact, their previous album "Metastatic Declination" from 2019 was a very frequent guest during my evening sessions. You can find the link to the review at the bottom of the article. This year's new release is a loose continuation of morbid rituals. This is music that will freeze your blood in your veins.
Once again, the gentlemen and lady did a perfect job of grave digging. Their work continues to reference bands like CIANIDE, AUTOPSY, UNDERGANG, FETID, WINTER, CELTIC FROST, ANATOMIA. And they do it with enthusiasm and determination. I trust them with every note, every note. It's a great pleasure for me, an old metal dog, to wander with them in the beyond. To visit long-abandoned tombs full of rotting corpses. Hilarious cover art (Necrofrost) and sound just perfectly complement the dark and powerful themes. Sometimes I have bad dreams. I exhume graves full of cursed bodies. I listen to records like "Encomium to Extinction". The combination of traditional, cursed doom and grimy death metal has been doing my depraved soul good since the late 1980s. And I really enjoy listening to this record. Because it has everything you need for the old rituals. I wouldn't be surprised if some fans encounter their own shadow, their own terrifying conscience, their own nightmares when they encounter this record together. We all know very well that there is another world out there. That's where this year's EP had to be recorded. It smells of dirt, grime and pus. It's always important to me that music rips my face to shreds. And CARCINOID have done that to perfection. I really am standing in a beautiful garden. Down below me are buried the bodies of the unfortunates who must have suffered a lot before they died. The atmosphere is very similar to this record. Wetting, rotten, dusty doom death metal, where you can smell the smell and coldness of cursed burial grounds!
Pálení v kostech, vnitřnosti v jednom ohni. Už ani nevím, kdy to začalo. Před mnoha lety, kdy jsem propadl peklu. Býval jsem veselý a díval jsem se na svět jako optimista. Jenže poslední dobou se kolem dějí divné věci. Občas z mlhy vystoupí krvavé přízraky, někdy vidím věci, které nikdo jiný ne. Přitahuje mě zlo, špína a nenávist. Jsem nasáklý smutkem a beznadějí. Dnes jsem navštívil další místo, na kterém se stala vražda. Do stěn je otištěna bolest a krvavé skvrny dokazují, že to není jen děsivá představa, ale krutá realita.
Přesně takovým způsobem přistupuji i k hudbě. Musí mít v sobě opravdovost, musí u ní praskat kosti a musím u ní vidět přízraky. Druhé dlouhohrající album LEFT CROSS z Virginie je zde a opět mokvá jako čerstvá mrtvola. Tohle je temný a zničující death metal, který koluje i v mých žilách.
Novinka je zlověstnou ozvěnou ze záhrobí. Jednou k tomu muselo dojít. Nemrtví se vrátili, aby nám vyprávěli šílené příběhy o utrpení, bolesti a absolutní tmě. Přesně takhle vnímám i novou desku "Upon Desecrated Altars". Je to starý, prašivý smrtící kov, který působí, jako by ležel dlouho v katakombách a letos byl exhumován a opatřen velmi dobrým zvukem i obalem. Vše je potom podáváno na víku od rakve. Doporučuji poslouchat ve tmě a chladu. Teprve potom vynikne síla téhle nahrávky naplno. Je jasné, že pánové neobjevují nic nového, ani se nevydávají neznámými cestami, ale album určitě není jen dobrým řemeslem. Naopak, skladby v sobě obsahují spoustu zajímavých momentů a deska se poslouchá době i jako celek. Pokud jste fanoušci třeba takových BOLT THROWER, PROFANATICA, PISSGRAVE, GRAVE MIASMA nebo REVENGE, určitě si dejte do hlavy i tuhle porci špíny. Osobně jsem musel s albem strávit nějakou dobu, aby naplno vynikla jeho síla a energie. Určitě to není hudba na jedno setkání. Naopak, je pro mě krásně morbidní se stále vracet. Začalo to pálením v kostech, vnitřnostmi v jednom ohni. Stalo se tak před mnoha lety, kdy jsem propadl peklu. Býval jsem veselý a díval jsem se na svět jako optimista. Jenže poslední dobou se kolem dějí divné věci. Občas z mlhy vystoupí krvavé přízraky, někdy vidím věci, které nikdo jiný ne. Přitahuje mě zlo, špína a nenávist. "Upon Desecrated Altars" je jako starodávná choroba, kterou někdo znovu exhumoval. U tohoto death metalu vám odpadá maso od kostí!

Burning in the bones, guts on fire. I don't even know when it started. Many years ago, when I went to hell. I used to be cheerful and I used to look at the world as an optimist. But lately, strange things have been happening around here. Sometimes bloody phantoms come out of the fog, sometimes I see things no one else does. I'm attracted to evil, filth and hatred. I'm soaked in sadness and hopelessness. Today I visited another murder scene. The pain is imprinted on the walls and the blood stains prove that this is not just a horrific fantasy, but a cruel reality.
That's exactly the way I approach music. It has to be real, it has to crack my bones and I have to see ghosts. The second full-length album from Virginia's LEFT CROSS is here, and once again it's wet as a fresh corpse. This is dark and devastating death metal that runs through my veins as well.
The novelty is an ominous echo from beyond the grave. It had to happen sometime. The undead have returned to tell us mad tales of suffering, pain and absolute darkness. That's exactly how I feel about the new album "Upon Desecrated Altars". It's old, dusty death metal that feels like it's been lying in the catacombs for a long time and this year it's been exhumed and given a very good sound and cover. Everything is then served on a coffin lid. I recommend listening in the dark and cold. Only then will the power of this recording come through to the full. It's clear that the gentlemen are not discovering anything new, nor venturing down unknown paths, but the album is certainly not just good craftsmanship. On the contrary, the songs contain a lot of interesting moments and the record is listenable at times and as a whole. If you're a fan of the likes of BOLT THROWER, PROFANATICA, PISSGRAVE, GRAVE MIASMA or REVENGE, be sure to get your head around this serving of filth. Personally, I had to spend some time with the album to fully appreciate its power and energy. It's definitely not one-meeting music. On the contrary, I find it beautifully morbid to keep coming back. Ave OVERTHROW! I have never found any interview with you in Czech language. I will ask you first to introduce the band to the readers who do not know you yet. You can start from the beginning and take us throw the whole history of OVERTHROW.
Hi Jakub, thanks for taking the time to put together the interview.
OVERTHROW began in the summer of 2011 with myself and our former guitarist getting together and just writing Thrash Metal songs that we thought sounded cool. When we had 4-5 songs, we got the first lineup together and started gigging locally in our hometown (London) as well as in other UK cities. The band went through various incarnations and gigged a lot over a decade before we recorded our debut album, „Strike Down The Saviour“, which was eventually released in September 2021 and contained all of the songs that were written during the aforementioned decade. After the release of the debut, we went through yet more lineup changes before myself and our drummer, Scott Lindsay, decided to make the band a two piece songwriting partnership, with live members recruited to do the gigs. Since making this decision, the band’s popularity and exposure has increased immensely, as we now have management and are signed to Redefining Darkness Records.
Over the years, our sound has evolved from just straightforward Thrash Metal into Extreme Metal, incorporating more Black/Death Metal elements into our sound, as Scott and myself are huge fans of underground Black & Death Metal bands such as Dead Congregation, Dissection, Morbid Angel, Bolzer, Emperor and Ulcerate, to name a few. There’s still a subconscious influence from Thrash (particularly Slayer) that creeps into our songwriting, but our sound has definitely evolved and become more refined, brutal and macabre, which is evident on the new EP.
This year you are releasing the new EP „Ascension of the Entombed“. Again, it's a dark, harsh and honest thrash/death/black metal. Did you access to the recording process differently than last time or did you choose verified practices?
The recording process for the EP wasn’t that much different to the recording process for the debut album. We recorded drums, guitars, bass and then vocals at Scott’s parents home studio and it was produced and engineered by our former bassist, Scott Bacon. We then sent it to be mixed and mastered by Harris Zourelidis, who had previous worked with Dead Congregation on their debut album „Graves Of The Archangels“, which is a huge favourite of ours and we wanted the EP to have the same sort of vibe/mix. The debut album took a long time because there were more songs but also we recorded during lockdown so we had to be strategic as to when we were able to go in and record. With the EP, it was a fairly straightforward process, as there were fewer songs to record and we weren’t hampered with any restrictions. The EP was already pretty much written even when we were recording the debut so it was just a case of getting in done once the first album cycle had run its course.
The new EP seems to me more complicated, perhaps initially less accessible, at the same time incredibly dark and evil. Was it intentional? How did the album originate and how did you compose the music?
I don’t think we intentionally wanted to make a more complicated/less accessible EP but we certainly knew that we were heading in a much more dark/evil direction this time. As I mentioned previously, myself and Scott are huge fans of underground Black/Death Metal as well as Thrash, so we wanted to explore these darker/sinister realms both musically and lyrically. All of the songs were written one after the other in a very short space of time and we knew instinctively that they belonged together, as they had the same sort of vibe/emotion. I write all of the music and then Scott helps with the arrangement and advises on which songs he thinks need refining and together we compile what we think sounds like a complete package, whether it’s an EP (in this case) or a full-length album. This is the process that we have naturally adopted since becoming a partnership. As I mentioned before, the debut album was essentially a compilation of all of the songs that were written in the first ten years of the band’s existence (with the various lineups) that we wanted put out and establish ourselves. With the EP, it’s the first real collaborative effort from just myself and Scott and the next releases will also follow in the same vein. It was a very organic process this time around, as Scott and I are on the same page both musically and aesthetically when it comes to the presentation of the band’s music/image.
I have a „Ascension of the Entombedr“ in my MP3 player and I have to say that this album literally engulfed me. These are not just great ideas but also sound is simply devastating. I'm sitting in the tram, and suddenly I find myself shaking my legs. I have a feeling to start moshing. If I weren’t so old, I would probably start to. Where did you record and who is signed under mastering?
Thanks a lot man, that’s very kind of you to say! As I mentioned previously, we recorded the EP at Scott’s parents home studio, The Nest Studio in Honor Oak Park, South London. The mixing and mastering duties were handled by Harris Zourelidis at Feedback Sound Studios in Athens, Greece.
Who is the author of lyrics on „Ascension of the Entombed“? What are they talking about? Where do you get inspiration for themes?
I write all of the lyrics in OVERTHROW as well as the music and have done since day one. Lyrically, each song tells a short story that I think compliments the sound/vibe of the music. The title track is about the dead returning to wreak havoc on the living, which was inspired to some degree by bands like Cannibal Corpse, Death and Morbid Angel who have written these type of songs before, but I put my own lyrical twist to this theme. „Lords Of Xibalba“ is inspired by the twelve gods of the Mayan underworld. „Ruptured Nebula“ is about an unstoppable force that completely decimates the cosmos and rips through space/time, annihilating everything in its path and returning existence to a state of total chaos. The final track „Caustic Vengeance (Blindly Driven)“ is more of a universal/somewhat personal song, lyrically, as the main topic is revenge and hatred for mankind in general. I approach lyrics in the same way I approach music in that I try to put my own thoughts and feelings on conventional Metal themes (war, death, pain, hatred etc.) and write in a way that the lyrics could mean many things, depending on the listeners perspective, but ultimately I usually start with a theme/narrative and see where it takes me. It’s an extention of this aforementioned organic songwriting process.
Who is signed under the cover of „Ascension of the Entombed“? I like his work very much. How did you choose the motif for cover?
The artwork for the EP was done by Deuteromali, a great artist based in South East Asia. We like his artwork style very much also and when it came time to finding an artist to do the EP artwork, we felt that his visuals represented our music very well. I came up with the concept/layout for the artwork and it was just a case of asking him to put it together in his style, which in my opinion came out extremely well. His style of artwork is very brutal and has that lo-fi, black & white, bestial War Metal album cover aesthetic that we wanted for this release, as opposed to the more colourful/painted artwork that we had on the first album.
When we look back at the beginning ... What was the first impulse to found the band? And why the thrash/death/black metal? It's not the typical style which can would give you great "glory".
As a teenager, I was always into heavy, fast, angry music. I got into Punk first when I was at school and bands like Sex Pistols, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys and Ramones inspired me to start playing guitar. I started getting into Metal a bit later on with Metallica, Slayer, Motorhead and Iron Maiden being some of my biggest personal influences. I’ve been in bands since I could play 3 chords on guitar as I’ve always had this innate desire to perform. Over the years, as I’ve gotten older and angrier, the music has naturally followed in the same fashion. In the early days of OVERTHROW, we were very much influenced by a lot of the Thrash Metal bands that were popular at the time (Evile, Municipal Waste, Gama Bomb) but as the years have progressed (and my musical tastes have progressed) the band’s music has naturally become heavier, faster and angrier. Black Metal and Death Metal music, as I see it, is the next logical step in this sonic exploration. I’ve never really been in it for „glory“ as you say, it’s more a desire to create compelling and captivating music that puts you in a good headspace and is also a cathartic release, speaking for myself.
You come from United Kingdom and you play extreme thrash/death/black metal. Our readers would certainly wonder how the metal scene works in your country. To tell you the truth, so lately I hear only the great bands from there. Does this mean that the scene there is so strong at the moment? What about concerts, how many people coming to them?
The scene in the UK is very strong at this moment in time. There are tonnes of incredible bands gaining national/international recognition and notoriety and bringing out some of the best music I’ve heard in a long time. The scene is very supportive, with bands, fans, promoters and venues supporting newer bands as well as bands that have been around for a while. There’s definitely a good sense of comradery, as well as healthy competition and I think that most of the bands you hear about now (particularly ones that have been doing this for many years) are starting to gain the recognition that they deserve, including us. Attendance, particularly at local gigs, seems to be getting better as a result of this and also because of post-lockdown and the fact that so many bands are making, in my opinion, their best work to date. We’ve been around for twelve years now and part of the reason we’ve stayed is due to the constant support we’ve received from the scene. It is very strong now and I think will only get stronger.
From your music is possible to feel that you are influenced by American thrash death metal school and as well by the old European bands. How do you feel about it as a fan? Do you prefer the original metal of the 1990s or do you get inspiration as well from the new albums? If yes so I am wondering which bands had the greatest impact on OVERTHROW.
Speaking for myself, I am hugely influenced by 90s Black/Death Metal bands, such as Dissection, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Darkthrone and Mayhem, to name but a few. The same goes for Thrash, with my biggest influences being Slayer, early Sepultura, Demolition Hammer and Sodom. I also love the original Metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Venom and Possessed, that typified their respective sub-genres. In terms of „newer“ bands, Dead Congregation, Ulcerate, Skeletal Remains, Bolzer, Midnight and Der Weg Einer Freiheit are some of my favourites. All of these bands have something intristincally unique about them and I think that their influence can be found in our music.
What about you and concerts in general? Are you a band that goes for concerts anytime you can or you are picky about where you will play? Do you have a dream, maybe a group you would like to go with for a tour or festival, a city where you would like to perform?
I attend gigs as a fan constantly. I go to a lot of local gigs as well as bigger gigs and I have been attending your wonderful Brutal Assault Festival for the past four years. As a band, we are in a position now where we get gig offers constantly so we can afford to pick and choose where we play and who we play with. In the early days, we would play wherever we could get gigs and I think this has helped us establish a reputation as a killer live act, particularly in our hometown. Nowadays, we try to be a bit more selective and play gigs in other cities as much as we can so that we can increase our fanbase and reach more people outside of our hometown. This is the ultimate goal for OVERTHROW; we want to play everywhere we can, not just in the UK but in the world! Personally, I would love to play the summer festivals (Brutal Assault, Bloodstock, Hellfest, Wacken etc.) in the future and tour across Europe and the US. I’ve also always wanted to play in South America, as the scene there is incredible!
I'm going to listen again your new album „Ascension of the Entombed“. I have to say that for me personally, this is basically a perfect thrash/black death metal work. Totally inferno. I wish big success to your record and to get this album to as many people as is possible. This album deserves it. I wish you all the best in your personal life.
