Shnilá ruka, kterou jsem nalezl v jednom starém hrobu, měla být děsivým symbolem. Měl jsem to čekat, měl jsem být připraven. Vždyť chodím na hřbitovy většinu svého života. Hledám na nich plesnivou a temnou hudbu, která koluje v mých žilách. Připravuji se na přechod na druhou stranu. Tentokrát se španělskými BLOODY BROTHERHOOD. Postupně, během poslechu jejich nové letošní desky, se objevila tvář bez kůže, s červy v očních důlcích, se zkaženou krví mezi zuby. Potom celé tělo a já jsem věděl, že jsem zde opět správně.

Pánové přicházejí se svým třetím dlouhohrajícím albem. Je po okraj narvané chladem, špínou, vztekem, záhrobními rituály a hlavně death metalem, který je surový a prašivý jako stará, exhumovaná rakev. Tihle maniaci moc dobře vědí, o čem je pravá, reálná smrt, o čem je pohřeb do země. Budete zakopáni několik metrů pod zem, spoutáni pavučinami ostrých melodií. 

Španělé jsou nadále oddáni základním myšlenkám smrti. Mají prašivý zvuk, spoustu zajímavých morbidních momentů ve skladbách, ale hlavně smrdí jako dávno pohřbená mrtvola. Pokud máte rádi kapely jako OBITUARY, DEICIDE, MORBID ANGEL, UNLEASHED, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, potom se pohodlně usaďte, napijte se z kalichu hořkosti a vychutnejte si melodie, které nejsou z našeho světa. Pro to, abyste tuhle hudbu opravdu pochopili, tak jste buď museli vyrůstat v devadesátých letech minulého století nebo musíte trávit dlouhé hodiny hluboko v podzemí. Přiznám se bez mučení, mám pro tyhle bardy slabost (důkazem budiž recenze i rozhovor, které jsou odkazovány dole pod dnešním článkem). Důvody se samy nabízí. Jednak se tu hraje opravdově, upřímně, s takovou tou krvavou jiskrou v oku a potom mě hlavně smrtící kov této odrůdy moc baví. Je to vlastně jednoduché. Odkryl jsem několik vrstev hlíny a našel jsem další z hrobů, ve kterých je uloženo tělo ve značném stádiu rozkladu. Líbí se mi nálada celé nahrávky, způsob, jakým kapela přistupuje ke své morbidní práci. Nejen, že dostanete perfektně odvedené hrobařské řemeslo, ale i něco navíc. Kus nahrubo nasekané tmy, zla a špíny. Prokletí i démoni mi má slova určitě potvrdí. Tohle je album, které se hraje v hluboké noci, ve starých chladných márnicích. Jsou to mrazivé a děsivé ozvěny ze záhrobí, je to nakumulovaný vztek i vzpoura všech nemrtvých. Za mě, starého psa, rozhodně doporučuji! Dostanete prvotřídní materiál. To je bez debat. Hnilobou nasáklý, temný a prašivý death metal z těch nešpinavějších katakomb! Syrový, morbidní zážitek, zahraný s elegancí starých mistrů!

The rotten hand I found in an old grave was supposed to be a terrifying symbol. I should have expected it, I should have been prepared. I've been going to cemeteries most of my life. I search them for the musty, dark music that runs through my veins. I'm preparing to cross over to the other side. This time with Spain's BLOODY BROTHERHOOD. Gradually, while listening to their new album this year, a face appeared, skinless, with worms in the eye sockets, with tainted blood between the teeth. Then the whole body, and I knew I was right there again.

The gentlemen come with their third full-length album. It's packed to the brim with cold, filth, rage, death rituals and most of all death metal that's as raw and dusty as an old, exhumed coffin. These maniacs know all too well what true, real death is all about, what burial in the ground is all about. You'll be buried several feet underground, bound by webs of sharp melodies.


The Spaniards remain committed to the basic ideas of death. They have a dusty sound, lots of interesting morbid moments in their songs, but mostly they smell like a long-buried corpse. If you like bands like OBITUARY, DEICIDE, MORBID ANGEL, UNLEASHED, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, then sit back, sip from the cup of bitterness and enjoy tunes that are not of our world. To really understand this music, you either had to grow up in the 1990s or spend long hours deep underground. I'll admit without torture, I have a soft spot for these bards (witness the review and interview linked below today's article). The reasons offer themselves. First of all, the acting is real, honest, with that bloody sparkle in the eye, and secondly, I'm particularly fond of the deadly metal of this variety. It's simple, actually. I've uncovered several layers of dirt and found another of the graves where a body in a considerable state of decomposition is buried. I like the mood of the whole record, the way the band approaches their morbid work. Not only do you get a perfectly executed gravedigger's craft, but you get something extra. A piece of coarsely chopped darkness, evil and filth. Curses and demons alike will surely back up my words. This is an album that is played in the dead of night, in cold old morgues. It's chilling and eerie echoes from beyond the grave, it's the accumulated rage and rebellion of all the undead. For me, an old dog, I definitely recommend it! You get top-notch material. No question about it. Rot-soaked, dark and dusty death metal from the dirtiest of catacombs! A raw, morbid experience, played with the elegance of the old masters!

Někdy je mlha nepropustná tak, že nevidím na krok. Nevadí mi to. Cestu znám velmi dobře. Death metal, ten pravý, prašivý a ošklivý, poslouchám více než třicet let. Moc dobře vím, že ten nejlepší lze nalézt ve starých katakombách, v hrobech, které jsou umístěny mimo hlavní hřbitov. Bývají na nich podivné nápisy a mnohdy jsou označeny krvavými symboly. O CORPUS OFFAL jsem již psal. Jenže to byla jen morbidní ochutnávka v podobě loňské demonahrávky.

Letos pánové, pohrobci CEREBRAL ROT (a členové spousty dalších undergroundových smeček jako třeba FETID, CAUSTIC WOUND, BELL WITCH), přicházejí se svým debutovým albem. Nutno rovnou dodat, že na něm naleznete vše pro ohavné záhrobní rituály. Jedná se o reálnou, krutou a smradlavou exhumaci prokletého hrobu. To vše velmi dobře zahrané, se skvělými nápady, se sirnatým odérem a spoustou momentů, u kterých vám ztuhne krev v žilách.


Některé skladby v sobě mají velké množství jedu, který působí postupně, pomalu, s jasným cílem – zabít vás hudbou, jiné vás zase rozdrtí. Pánové dokáží být suroví, ale nezapomínají ani na temné ingredience. Výsledný koktejl musí chutnat každému, kdo má rád death metal v jeho staré podobě. Není to ale jenom klasika a tradice, na kterou Američané odkazují. Je zde i spousta nových, neotřele zahraných prvků, které nejen, že dodávají celé desce na pestrosti, ale také jsou jasným důkazem toho, že tihle maniaci pevně věří tomu, co hrají. Co se týká zvuku (Billy Anderson production), obalu (Karina Monzon) a dalších formálních záležitostí, není si na co stěžovat. Není to ale jenom kov smrti, který zde zní mocně a naléhavě. Vystopovat lze i kousky hrubého grindcore. Album vám doporučuji poslouchat v kuse, potom vynikne jeho temná síla nejvíce. Psát o hudbě je jedna věc, ale nikdy vám nedovedu přenést reálný zážitek z nové desky. To byste museli sestoupit několik metrů pod zem, do plesnivých kobek, ve kterých se rozkládají mokvající kusy masa. Kdysi to byli lidé, se svými pocity, touhami a svědomím. Teď tu leží, rozsekaní a postupně se rozpadající v prach. Velmi podobnou atmosféru naleznete i na tomto albu. Ostré riffy, valivé melodie, které se vám zadřou postupně pod kůži. Po téhle kapele zůstává dlouhá smradlavá krvavá stopa. Dávám novince plný počet bodů a s klidem na ní nalepují štítek vysoké kvality. Tahle exhumace se povedla na výbornou! Někdy je mlha nepropustná tak, že nevidím na krok. Nevadí mi to. Cestu znám velmi dobře. Přímo do temnoty. Starodávnými chorobami nasáklý death metal, shnilá mršina, která vám půjde po krku! Surový masakr v márnici!

Sometimes the fog is so impenetrable that I can't see a step. I don't mind. I know the way very well. I've been listening to death metal, the real, dirty, ugly kind, for over thirty years. I know very well that the best can be found in the old catacombs, in the graves that are located outside the main cemetery. They tend to have strange inscriptions on them and are often marked with bloody symbols. I have already written about CORPUS OFFAL. But that was just a morbid taster in the form of last year's demo.

This year, the gentlemen, posthumous members of CEREBRAL ROT (and members of many other underground packs like FETID, CAUSTIC WOUND, BELL WITCH), come with their debut album. It should be added that it contains everything for the hideous afterlife rituals. This is a real, cruel and stinking exhumation of the cursed grave. All very well played, with great ideas, a sulphurous odour and plenty of moments that will make your blood run cold.


Some songs have a lot of poison in them, which works gradually, slowly, with a clear goal - to kill you with the music, others to crush you. The gentlemen can be raw, but they don't forget the dark ingredients. The resulting cocktail is a must for anyone who likes death metal in its old form. But it's not only the classics and tradition that the Americans refer to. There are also a lot of new, freshly played elements that not only add to the whole album's variety, but also are a clear proof that these maniacs firmly believe in what they play. In terms of sound (Billy Anderson production), cover art (Karina Monzon) and other formal matters, there is nothing to complain about. But it's not just the death metal that sounds powerful and urgent here. One can also trace bits of rough grindcore. I recommend listening to the album in pieces, then its dark power will stand out the most. Writing about music is one thing, but I can never convey the real experience of a new album. You'd have to descend several meters underground, into moldy dungeons where the dripping pieces of flesh are decomposing. They used to be people, with their feelings, desires and consciences. Now they lie there, dismembered and gradually crumbling into dust. A very similar atmosphere can be found on this album. Sharp riffs, rolling melodies that gradually get under your skin. There's a long stinking bloody trail left by this band. I give the new release full marks and they stick the label of high quality on it with ease. This exhumation was excellent! Sometimes the fog is so impenetrable that I can't see a step. I don't mind. I know the way very well. Right into the darkness. Ancient disease-soaked death metal, rotten carrion that'll go for your throat! Raw carnage in the morgue!

Vdechuji rozžhavený vzduch. Procházím dalším stupněm proměny. Už dlouhé roky toužím po tom, rozpadnout se v prach, rozplynout se ve věčnosti. Cesta je to dlouhá, plná nástrah a utrpení. Pořádám pradávné rituály, vyvolávám temné síly a navštěvuji tajemná místa, o kterých se říká, že na nich můžete vstoupit do záhrobí. Jedno takové jsem našel v maďarském Szegedi. Už jsem zde byl, v roce 2021, když jsem psal o předchozí desce těchto maniaků. I letos se jedná do krvavé mlhy zahalený death metal s doomovou atmosférou.

Jedná se přesně o odrůdu, kterou mám tolik rád. Líbí  se mi pochmurná atmosféra. Náhrobky, nakloněné na stranu, se jmény prokletých, vytesaných do kamene. Někdy, když je dobrá konstelace a mám s sebou nahrávku od maďarských ROTHADÁS, se objeví nemrtví. Vylezou ze starých hrobů a kývají se do rytmu. Nedivím se jim, nové album se opravdu povedlo. 


Netuším, jestli jste někdy podali ruku čerstvé mrtvole a pohlédli jste do jejích očí, ale věřte mi, že se budete cítit úplně stejně jako při poslechu "Töviskert... a kísértés örök érzete... lidércharang". Pokud máte někdy pocit, že je svět divný ze své podstaty, plný násilí, lží a nenávisti, u téhle desky si své pochmurné dojmy jenom potvrdíte. Kolem totiž létají šedivé, černé a krvavé nálady jako můry kolem plamene. Padají do ohně, stejně jako včerejší den. Z nebe prší bolest a vy cítíte neskutečnou tíži. Jakoby vám někdo stoupnul ocelovou botou přímo na prsa, dusil vás a vy se pomalu propadali do hlubiny. Zvuk je masivní, dobře čitelný a dunivý. Riffy se vám zadřou pod kůži i do podvědomí. Budete mezi prsty prosévat prach svých předků, budete se modlit k obráceným křížům. Pokud máte rádi kapely jako DISMA, MORTIFERUM, CEREMONIUM, KRYPTS, WORM, INCANTATION, neváhejte ani chvilku. Utopíte se v močálech, postupně se stanete svým vlastním stínem. Líbí se mi, že jsou Maďaři opravdoví, uvěřitelní, že se mi jejich hudba dostala do žil a zůstávají po ní mrazivé kousky ledu. Některé hroby jsou opravdu děsivé, leží v nich samotní démoni. Nedají vám klid ani po své smrti. S touto deskou to vidím hodně podobně. Stala se na dlouhý čas mým průvodcem po záhrobí a mohu vám ji jenom doporučit. Pokud máte rádi mlhavá rána na hřbitově, pokud s chutí nocujete v márnicích, potom jste zde správně. Vdechuji rozžhavený vzduch. Procházím dalším stupněm proměny. Už dlouhé roky toužím po tom, rozpadnout se v prach, rozplynout se ve věčnosti. Cesta je to dlouhá, plná nástrah a utrpení. Myslím si, že jsem došel do cíle. Je jím hrobka s nápisem ROTHADÁS nad vchodem. Morbidní, plíživé, jedovaté death metalové zlo! Temnota poskládaná ze starých plesnivých kostí!

I'm breathing in hot air. I'm going through another stage of transformation. For years I have longed to crumble into dust, to dissolve into eternity. It's a long journey, full of pitfalls and suffering. I have held ancient rituals, invoked dark forces and visited mysterious places where it is said you can enter the afterlife. I found one in Szegedi, Hungary. I've been here before, in 2021, when I wrote about a previous album by these maniacs. Again this year it is death metal shrouded in a bloody mist with a doom atmosphere.

This is exactly the variety I like so much. I like the gloomy atmosphere. Tombstones, tilted to one side, with the names of the damned carved in stone. Sometimes, when the constellation is right and I have a record by the Hungarian ROTHADAS with me, the undead appear. They crawl out of old graves and sway to the rhythm. I don't blame them, the new album is really good. 

I don't know if you've ever shaken hands with a fresh corpse and looked into its eyes, but believe me, you'll feel exactly the same as when you listen to "Töviskert... a kísértés örök érzete... lidércharang". If you ever feel that the world is inherently strange, full of violence, lies and hatred, you will only get your gloomy impressions confirmed with this album. Because grey, black and bloody moods fly around like moths around a flame. They fall into the fire, just like yesterday. Pain rains down from the sky and you feel an incredible heaviness. It is as if someone has stepped a steel boot right on your chest, choking you, and you are slowly sinking into the depths. The sound is massive, clear and thunderous. The riffs get under your skin and into your subconscious. You will sift the dust of your ancestors between your fingers, you will pray to the inverted crosses. If you like bands like DISMA, MORTIFERUM, CEREMONIUM, KRYPTS, WORM, INCANTATION, don't hesitate a moment. You will drown in the swamps, gradually becoming your own shadow. I like that the Hungarians are real, believable, that their music gets into my veins and leaves chilling chunks of ice. Some of the graves are truly terrifying, the demons themselves lie in them. They won't give you peace even after they're dead. I see a lot of the same with this record. It became my guide to the afterlife for a long time and I can only recommend it. If you like foggy mornings in the cemetery, if you enjoy spending the night in morgues, then you've come to the right place. I breathe in the hot air. I'm going through another stage of transformation. I've longed for years to crumble into dust, to dissolve into eternity. It's a long journey, full of pitfalls and suffering. I think I've reached my destination. It is the tomb with the inscription ROTHADAS above the entrance. Morbid, creeping, poisonous death metal evil! Darkness made of old, moldy bones!

Občas jen tak sedím a dívám se do temnoty. Čekám, co z ní přijde. Někdy jsou to krvavé stíny, někdy děsivé ozvěny, někdy zahlédnu záblesk ostrého nože. Nejvíc se ale vždycky těším na hudbu, která má v sobě drive a sílu, touhu ničit, roztrhat vás na kusy. Italští SADIST patří mezi smečky, které sleduji již dlouhé roky. Pokaždé jsou trošku jiní, vždy zajímaví a se spoustou nových neotřelých nápadů. 

Letos přicházejí tihle veteráni s dalším velmi svěžím materiálem. Jedná se o technický death metal se spoustou progresivních prvků. Najdete zde jak staré, klasické a tradiční postupy (na kterých je vše postaveno), ale i nová temná zákoutí. Poslech je svým způsobem neklidný, přesto přitažlivý. Jedná se přesně o druh muziky, nad kterou budete přemýšlet a pro kterou je nutné mít alespoň nějakou dávku fantazie. 


Jako první musím zmínit, že se novinka opravdu velmi dobře poslouchá. I když jsou některé momenty složité, těžké a náročné, stále mají skladby jasnou a zřetelnou strukturu. Pochválit musím i velmi masivní, mocný a dobře srozumitelný vokál. Schválně jsem si pouštěl novou desku v různých stavech mé mysli, ve dne, v noci, při jízdě v autě a pokaždé jsem měl pocit, že mi muzika koluje doslova v žilách. Stala se i mojí součástí. Pokud jste se s těmito veterány ještě nesetkali, tak věřte, že lze jejich hudbu charakterizovat jako smrtící opus s vlivy třeba takových CYNIC, SADUS, ATHEIST, NOCTURNUS, DEATH, PESTILENCE. Samozřejmě s tím, že má kapela svůj vlastní výraz i ksicht. Jsem už starý pes a hudba mi musí dělat dobře na mé černé duši, musí mít dobrý zvuk (zde je opravdu masivní, důrazný a velmi dobře čitelný), musí mít obal s nějakým nápadem, co mě zaujme. SADIST tohle všechno mají a ještě přidávají něco navíc. Novinka je pestrá, svěží, hravá. Má v sobě drive, takovou tu pradávnou sílu a poctivost a zároveň i touhu objevovat nová temný zákoutí. Vždycky tvrdím, že hudba je jenom jedna a nezáleží na tom, o jaký styl se jedná. A tentokrát létá moje fantazie jako můry kolem ohně. Vznáším se, padám do hlubiny, nechávám se strhnout příběhy, které kapela vypráví. Platí tu zde, více než kdy jindy, že je lepší poslouchat, nechat na sebe jednotlivé skladby působit, než psát slova. Nové album má totiž ještě další rozměr, dimenzi. Italům se opět povedlo nahrát velmi kvalitní materiál, který ale není jenom dobře odvedeným řemeslem. Naopak, tahle nahrávka má v sobě navíc chvění, černou energii, magii, říkejte si tomu jak chcete, já budu zase jen tak sedět a dívat se do temnoty. Čekat, co z ní přijde. Někdy jsou to krvavé stíny, někdy děsivé ozvěny, někdy zahlédnu záblesk ostrého nože. Tentokrát je to hudba, která mě neskutečně baví. Excelentní technický, progresivní death metal! Silné a svěží album, které vás strhne do té nejhlubší temnoty!

Sometimes I just sit and stare into the darkness. Waiting to see what comes out of it. Sometimes it's bloody shadows, sometimes eerie echoes, sometimes I catch a glimpse of a sharp knife. But most of all, I always look forward to music that has drive and power, a desire to destroy, to tear you apart. Italy's SADIST are one of the bands I've been following for years. Each time they are a bit different, always interesting and with lots of new and fresh ideas. 

This year these veterans come with another very fresh material. It is technical death metal with a lot of progressive elements. You will find here both old, classic and traditional methods (on which everything is based), but also new dark corners. The listening is in a way restless, yet appealing. This is exactly the kind of music you'll be thinking about, and for which you need to have at least some amount of imagination.


The first thing I have to mention is that the novelty is really very easy to listen to. Even though some moments are complex, difficult and challenging, the songs still have a clear and distinct structure. I also have to praise the very massive, powerful and well-understood vocals. I purposely played the new album in different states of my mind, day, night, while driving in the car, and every time I felt like the music was literally coursing through my veins. It became a part of me. If you haven't met these veterans yet, believe me, their music can be described as a deadly opus with influences like CYNIC, SADUS, ATHEIST, NOCTURNUS, DEATH, PESTILENCE. Of course, the band has its own expression and face. I'm an old dog and the music has to do good to my black soul, it has to have a good sound (here it's really massive, emphatic and very easy to hear), it has to have a cover with some idea that catches my attention. SADIST have all of this and add a little something extra. The novelty is colourful, fresh, playful. It has drive, that ancient strength and honesty, and also a desire to explore new dark corners. I always say there is only one music and it doesn't matter what style it is. And this time my imagination is flying like moths around a flame. I float, I fall into the depths, I get swept away by the stories the band tells. It is true here, more than ever, that it is better to listen, to let the songs affect you, than to write the words. The new album has yet another dimension, another dimension. Once again the Italians have managed to record very high quality material, but it is not just a well done craft. On the contrary, this record has an extra tingle to it, a black energy, a magic, call it what you will, I'll just sit back and stare into the darkness. Waiting to see what comes out of it. Sometimes it's bloody shadows, sometimes eerie echoes, sometimes I catch a glimpse of a sharp knife. This time it's the music, which I'm enjoying immensely. Excellent technical, progressive death metal! A strong and fresh album that will take you into the deepest darkness!

Ave FRIGHTFUL! I couldn't find any interview with you in Czech anywhere. So I'll ask you first to introduce the band to the readers who don't know you yet. You can start from the beginning and take us through the whole history of FRIGHTFUL.

Fascinated by old school Death and Grindcore, We decided that we will try to make something ala Terrorizer, Napalm Death, Carcass, first albums of Cannibal Corpse etc. We were quite young at the time and liked to smoke a lot of weed, so band was purely for fun. In a few months we wrote a total of 6 songs, which we thought were quite good, so we decided to find a name and release it at our own expense, as an EP. The material was well received and we started touring all over Poland. We even managed to go to Lithuania, Latvia and the Czech Republic. At that time, we released an EP and Split, which we are not entirely happy with today, but they were just mistakes of our youth. When Covid started, we decided it was time to take it to the next level. We started writing better, more melodic and technical material, and we persuaded a second guitarist, Mateusz Mencel, to cooperate. Following the release of "Spectral Creator", many better shows and overall development, in early 2023 Mateusz decided to leave the band. After finding a new guitarist (Eryk Jakubczyk) and returning to performing after less than 4 months, we started writing material for our second LP "What Lies Ahead", which will be released on February 28. And so, here we are now.


This year you have just released a fresh new album "What Lies Ahead". Once again it is dark, gritty and honest death thrash metal. Did you approach the recording differently than last time or did you go with tried and tested methods?

PS: 'Spectral Creator' was, above all, quite a brave test of our skills. "What Lies Ahead" is simply the beginning of what we want to continue. We tried to capture all the best from the debut and polish it better with compositions and sound. And I think we succeeded.

I find the new record an order of magnitude more complicated, maybe less accessible at first, but at the same time incredibly dark and evil. Was that the intention? How was the album actually created and how did you compose the music?

PS: Even though we liked Spectral very much, we were somewhat aware that there was not enough darkness there. This is both his advantage and disadvantage. With the new material, we wanted to go more towards this "dark and evil" side, while maintaining the atmosphere of the previous one.


I have "What Lies Ahead" in my MP3 player and I have to say that I am literally consumed by it. It's not just the great ideas, but the sound, which is in a word devastating. For example, I'm sitting on a tram and suddenly I find myself tapping my foot. I feel like partying. If I weren't a gentleman of my years, I'd probably do it. Where did you record the album and who is the mastering engineer?

PS: The creator of this beautiful mix is ​​Maciej Nejman from studio 147. The same one who is responsible for our debut. Even though we demanded a lot and spent a lot of time on the sound, the way this album sounds is mostly due to him. We are always pleased to work with Maciej.

Who wrote the lyrics on "What Lies Ahead"? And what are they about? Where do you get inspiration for the themes?

PS: All lyrics are written by guitarist Paweł Snarski. They are a collection of everything that bothers me and refers to several personal experiences and traumas. Of course, the topics are very broad, so I also hope that fans will interpret them in their own way. When it comes to finding words, apart from old dictionaries, I liked to look into the texts of Dissection, Vektor, Blood Incantation or Death, but mostly I focused on finding lesser used words and the "stories" I wanted to tell.


Who signed the cover art for "What Lies Ahead"? I like his work a lot. How did you choose the theme for the cover?

PS: The guy's name is N.Zuki. He is probably from Japan, as I remember, and you can find him under name Belial NecroArts. I never met him, of course, we only quickly discussed the cover art via Facebook. About the theme, there is a quite specific story. One time I was watching "The Walking Dead", and saw, that one of the episodes was named "What Lies Ahead".I really liked this title, so I kept it in my mind. After some time, I gave this title to one of our tracks and when I looked at all the lyrics from the album, I decided that this name would be perfect.

If we look back to the beginning... What was the first impulse to put the band together? And why death and thrash metal? They're not exactly styles that would get you a lot of "fame".

PS: As I said in first question, we were quite young at the time when band started, and it was purely for fun. We always loved this genres, so we started to play it. Not for fame, but for music.


You come from Gdansk and play extreme death thrash metal. Our readers would be interested to know how the death thrash metal scene works in Poland. To tell you the truth, lately I've been hearing from you only great bands again. Does it mean that the scene is very strong in your country nowadays? What about gigs, how many people come?

PS: Maybe not exactly the Death/Thrash Metal scene is doing well, but the general metal scene here is doing really well. There are plenty of great bands, like: Gallower, Species, Nightbound, Armagh, Sex Mag, R I P, Leprozorium or Morrath. It’s very good time to be young metal band here. Gigs are usually pretty good, with the number of people approx 100, to 250 on bigger events.

From your music you can feel that you are influenced by the American death thrash metal school as well as old European bands. How are you as fans? Do you prefer the original death metal of the 90s or do you draw inspiration from new records as well? If so, I wonder which bands had/have the biggest influence on FRIGHTFUL?

PS: Even though we don't hear it much here, there is one new band that strongly influenced us, or at least me, and it’s Blood Incantation. Very talented guys. From oldschool stuff, there will be Dissection and Death for sure. The rest is for sure our contribution.

 

What about you and gigs in general? Are you a band that goes to shows as much as possible or do you pick and choose a lot? Do you have a dream, like a band you'd like to tour with or a festival, city you'd like to perform in?

PS: Maybe sometimes we give up some, but usually we try to take most of the gigs. As for dreams, it would be nice to support some still existing giant, such as Carcass or Morbid Angel on Europe or USA tour.

We're coming to the end and so I'd like to try a more philosophical question. How would you define the style called death thrash metal? What is this music to you and why did you choose this style?

PS: I chose it because I think it's the most raw and abrasive music, with a certain sense of seriousness to it all. I love Black Metal, but I am often repelled by its appearance or its extremely degraded quality. It is most appropriate to reality, and that is the best thing about it.

What is FRIGHTFUL going to do in the next few months?

PS: Playing gigs, promoting new album and having fun of course.

I'm going to listen to your new album "What Lies Ahead" again. I have to say that for me personally it is basically a perfect death thrash metal masterpiece. A total inferno. I wish the record to do well, to reach as many fans as possible. It deserves it. I wish you all the best in your personal life. Good luck and the last words are yours. Ave FRIGHTFUL! Nikde jsem s vámi nenašel žádný rozhovor v češtině. Poprosím tě tedy nejdřív, abys čtenářům, kteří vás ještě neznají, představil kapelu. Můžeš klidně začít úplně od začátku a provést nás celou historií FRIGHTFUL.

PS: Ahoj! Všechno to začalo na přelomu let 2016 a 2017. Fascinováni old school deathem a grindcorem jsme se rozhodli, že se pokusíme vytvořit něco ala Terrorizer, Napalm Death, Carcass, první alba Cannibal Corpse atd. V té době jsme byli dost mladí a rádi jsme kouřili trávu, takže kapela byla čistě pro zábavu. Za pár měsíců jsme napsali celkem šest skladeb, které se nám zdály docela dobré, a tak jsme se rozhodli, že si najdeme jméno a vydáme je na vlastní náklady jako EP. Materiál byl dobře přijat a my jsme začali koncertovat po celém Polsku. Dokonce se nám podařilo vyjet do Litvy, Lotyšska a České republiky. V té době jsme vydali EP a Split, se kterými dnes nejsme úplně spokojeni, ale byly to prostě chyby našeho mládí. Když Covid začínal, rozhodli jsme se, že je čas posunout se na další úroveň. Začali jsme psát lepší, melodičtější a techničtější materiál a ke spolupráci jsme přemluvili druhého kytaristu, Mateusze Mencla. Po vydání alba „Spectral Creator“, mnoha lepších koncertech a celkovém vývoji se Mateusz na začátku roku 2023 rozhodl kapelu opustit. Po nalezení nového kytaristy (Eryk Jakubczyk) a návratu ke koncertování jsme po necelých čtyřech měsících začali psát materiál pro naši druhou LP desku „What Lies Ahead“, která vyšla 28. února. A tak jsme teď tady.


Letos jste vydali právě čerstvou novinku „What Lies Ahead“. Opět se jedná o temný, drsný a poctivý death thrash metal. Přistupovali jste k nahrávání jinak než minule nebo jste zvolili ověřené postupy?

PS: „Spectral Creator“ byl především docela odvážnou zkouškou našich schopností. „What Lies Ahead“ je prostě začátek toho, v čem chceme pokračovat. Snažili jsme se zachytit vše nejlepší z debutu a ještě lépe ho kompozičně a zvukově vypilovat. A myslím, že se nám to podařilo.

Nová deska mi přijde o nějaký řád komplikovanější, zpočátku možná méně přístupná, zároveň ale neskutečně temná a zlá. Byl to záměr? Jak vlastně album vznikalo a jakým způsobem jste skládali muziku?

PS: I když se nám Spectral velmi líbil, byli jsme si vědomi, že v něm není dost temnoty. To je jeho výhoda i nevýhoda. S novým materiálem jsme se chtěli více přiblížit této „temné a zlé“ stránce, ale zároveň zachovat atmosféru toho předchozího.


Mám „What Lies Ahead“ ve svém MP3 přehrávači a musím říct, že jsem jím doslova pohlcen. Nejsou to jen skvělé nápady, ale i zvuk, který je jedním slovem devastující. Sedím třeba v tramvaji a najednou se přistihnu, že si podupávám nohou. Mám sto chutí začít pařit. Nebýt už pán v letech, asi bych to i udělal. Kde jste desku nahrávali a kdo je podepsán pod masteringem?

PS: Autorem tohoto krásného mixu je Maciej Nejman ze studia 147. Ten samý, který má na svědomí náš debut. I když jsme toho hodně vyžadovali a strávili nad zvukem spoustu času, to, jak tahle deska zní, je hlavně jeho zásluha. Spolupráce s Maciejem nás vždycky potěší.

Kdo je autorem textů na „What Lies Ahead“? A o čem pojednávají? Kde pro témata berete inspiraci?

PS: Autorem všech textů jsem já, kytarista Paweł Snarski. Jsou souhrnem všeho, co mě trápí, a odkazují na několik osobních zážitků a traumat. Témata jsou samozřejmě velmi široká, takže zároveň doufám, že si je fanoušci vyloží po svém. Co se týče hledání slov, kromě starých slovníků jsem se rád podíval do textů Pitevny, Vektora, Zaklínání krve nebo Smrti, ale většinou jsem se zaměřil na hledání méně používaných slov a „příběhů“, které jsem chtěl vyprávět.


Kdo je podepsán pod obalem novinky „What Lies Ahead“? Jeho práce se mi hodně líbí. Jak jste vůbec motiv na obal vybírali?

PS: Ten chlap se jmenuje N.Zuki. Pokud si vzpomínám, je pravděpodobně z Japonska a najdete ho pod jménem Belial NecroArts. Nikdy jsem se s ním samozřejmě nesetkal, jen jsme spolu v rychlosti probrali obálku přes Facebook. K tématu se váže poměrně specifický příběh. Jednou jsem se díval na seriál The Walking Dead a viděl jsem, že jeden z dílů se jmenuje What Lies Ahead (Co nás čeká), ten název se mi moc líbil, tak jsem si ho nechal v hlavě. Po nějaké době jsem tento název dal jedné z našich skladeb, a když jsem se podíval na všechny texty z alba, rozhodl jsem se, že tento název bude dokonalý.

Když se ještě podíváme na začátek…Co bylo vlastně tím prvním impulsem, že jste dali dohromady kapelu? A proč zrovna death a thrash metal? Nejsou to zrovna styly, které by vám získaly velkou „slávu“.

PS: Jak už jsem řekl v první otázce, v době, kdy kapela vznikla, jsme byli poměrně mladí a bylo to čistě pro zábavu. Vždycky se nám tenhle žánr líbil, tak jsme ho začali hrát. Ne kvůli slávě, ale kvůli hudbě.


Pocházíte z Gdaňska a hrajete extrémní death thrash metal. Naše čtenáře by určitě zajímalo, jak funguje v Polsku death thrash metalová scéna. Abych pravdu řekl, tak poslední dobou od vás slyším zase jen samé skvělé smečky. Znamená to, že je u vás v současnosti scéna hodně silná? Co třeba koncerty, kolik chodí lidí?

PS: Možná se nedaří zrovna death/thrash metalové scéně, ale obecně se tu metalové scéně daří opravdu dobře. Je tu spousta skvělých kapel, jako např: Gallower, Species, Nightbound, Armagh, Sex Mag, R I P, Leprozorium nebo Morrath. Je to velmi dobrá doba být mladou metalovou kapelou. Koncerty jsou většinou docela dobré, počet lidí se pohybuje okolo 100, na větších akcích až 250.

Z vaší hudby je cítit, že jste ovlivněni jak americkou death thrash metalovou školou, tak i starými evropskými kapelami. Jak jste na tom jako fanoušci? Máte radši původní death metal devadesátých let nebo čerpáte inspiraci i z nových desek? Pokud ano, zajímalo by mě, které smečky měly/mají na FRIGHTFUL největší vliv?

PS: Ačkoli je u nás moc neslyšíme, je tu jedna nová kapela, která nás, nebo alespoň mě, silně ovlivnila, a to Blood Incantation. Velmi talentovaní kluci. Z oldschoolových věcí to budou určitě Dissection a Death. Zbytek je určitě náš příspěvek.

 

Co vlastně vy a koncerty obecně? Jste kapelou, která jezdí po koncertech, co to jenom jde nebo si hodně vybíráte? Máte nějaký sen, třeba skupinu, se kterou byste chtěli vyrazit na turné nebo festival, město, kde byste chtěli vystupovat?

PS: Možná se někdy něčeho vzdáme, ale většinou se snažíme brát většinu koncertů. Co se týče snů, bylo by hezké podpořit nějakého stále existujícího velikána, jako jsou Carcass nebo Morbid Angel na turné po Evropě nebo USA.

Blížíme se k závěru a tak bych zkusil jednu více filozofickou otázku. Jak byste definovali styl zvaný death thrash metal? Čím pro vás tato hudba je a proč jste si vybrali právě tento styl?

PS: Vybral jsem si ji, protože si myslím, že je to ta nejsyrovější a nejdrsnější hudba s určitým smyslem pro vážnost. Black metal mám také rád, ale často mě odpuzuje svým vzhledem nebo extrémně pokleslou kvalitou. Nejvíce odpovídá realitě, a to je na něm to nejlepší.

Co chystají FRIGHTFUL v nejbližších měsících?

PS: Hraní koncertů, propagace nového alba a samozřejmě zábava.

Jdu si vaši novou desku „What Lies Ahead“ znovu pustit. Musím říct, že pro mě osobně se jedná v podstatě dokonalé death thrash metalové dílo. Totální inferno. Přeji vám, aby se nahrávce dařilo, aby se dostala k co největšímu počtu fanoušků. Zaslouží si to. Přeji vám vše nejlepší i v osobním životě. Ať se vám daří a poslední slova jsou tvoje. Pokud chceš něco vzkázat fanouškům, labelům, promotérům, máš prostor. Děkuji za rozhovor a už teď se těším, až vás uvidím někdy naživo!

Sleduji krvavé stopy. Vedou dolů, do podzemí. Po starých kamenných schodech. Po stěnách stéká hnis a z nekonečných chodeb podzemí se ozývá šílený nářek. Zavřeni v klecích, se strachem v očích, zde čekají na svoji smrt. Pradávné rituály byly vždy stejně kruté a temné, jako hudba finských SEPULCHRAL CURSE. Jedná se o pravověrnou kapelu, která uchopila temnotu a zlo po svém. A tak se můžete opět zúčastnit rituálu, při kterém jsou vyvolávány ty nejhorší zlé síly.

Ihned mě obejmuly chladné a pevné melodie. Připadal jsem si jako spoutaný pavučinami. Jednou možná exhumují můj prašivý hrob, do kterého jsem byl pohřbený zaživa, a budu držet v rukou stále tuhle desku. Kapele se totiž povedlo hudbou znázornit ty nejděsivější ozvěny ze záhrobí. Pokud to máte takhle rádi, určitě si přečtěte i rozhovor a recenze na předešlé nahrávky. Jsou odkazovány dole pod dnešní recenzí. Letos jsou pánové silnější než kdy dřív. Přišli k nám ze záhrobí, aby zvěstovali příchod zla na náš nebohý svět. 


Zvukově je nové album velmi dobře ošetřeno (Tomi Uusitupa - recording, mixing, producer). Surový, klasický death metal je zde kombinován s blackovými náladami. Skladby jsou velmi propracované, mají v sobě silné momenty, nosné pasáže, na kterých je vždy vystavěna košatá a pestrá konstrukce. To vše je samozřejmě zahaleno do šedých a černých barev. Ušpiněna krví si nahrávka zachovává takovou tu klasickou, syrovou podstatu. Jako bych se opravdu procházel v mlhavém večeru na starém hřbitově, čekal jsem, až se setmí, abych mohl sestoupit dolů, do podzemí. Pokud máte rádi kapely jako INCANTATION, CORPSESSED, GOREPHILIA, SULPHUR AEON, DEMILICH, ADRAMELECH, CONVULSE, LURK, DEMIGOD, hraje se tu i pro vás, i pro všechny tmáře a prokleté. Démony můžete potkat na každém rohu, stejně jako šedivé, éterické bytosti bez tváře. Jsou to nemrtví, kteří navěky bloudí mezi naším a oním světem. Jsou to právě oni, kteří mi tuhle desku doporučili. Venku je zase tma a město konečně spí. Znovu zapínám play a moje mysl létá za řekou Styx. Líbí se mi, že má kapela svůj vlastní rukopis, že jsou SEPULCHRAL CURSE opravdoví, uvěřitelní, že se nové album velmi dobře poslouchá. "Crimson Moon Evocations" lze doporučit všem, kteří se vydávají na lov hlavně v noci. Také všem, kteří mají rádi death metal, ve kterém jsou obsaženy kousky černého ledu. Novinka má takovou zvláštní, neuchopitelnou, přitažlivou a nebál bych se napsat magickou atmosféru. Sleduji krvavé stopy. Vedou dolů, do podzemí. Po starých kamenných schodech. Po stěnách stéká hnis a z nekonečných chodeb podzemí se ozývá šílený nářek. Zavřeni v klecích, se strachem v očích, zde čekají na svoji smrt. Démoni se vrátili! Do krvavé mlhy zahalený, temný a chladný death metalový obřad! Nahrubo nasekaná tma!

Soundwise the new album is very well treated (Tomi Uusitupa - recording, mixing, producer). Raw, classic death metal is combined with black moods. The songs are very elaborate, they have strong moments, supporting passages, on which is always built a colorful and colorful construction. All this is of course wrapped in grey and black colours. Stained with blood, the record retains that classic, raw essence. It's like really walking in an old cemetery on a foggy evening, waiting for it to get dark so I could go downstairs, underground. If you like bands like INCANTATION, CORPSESSED, GOREPHILIA, SULPHUR AEON, DEMILICH, ADRAMELECH, CONVULSE, LURK, DEMIGOD, there's a band playing for you, and for all the dark and damned. Demons can be found around every corner, as well as grey, ethereal, faceless creatures. They are the undead that forever wander between our world and the next. They're the ones who recommended this record to me. It's dark outside again and the city is finally asleep. I put it back on and my mind flies to the River Styx. I like that the band has its own signature, that SEPULCHRAL CURSE are real, believable, that the new album is very easy to listen to. "Crimson Moon Evocations" can be recommended to all who go hunting especially at night. Also to all who like death metal that contains bits of black ice. The new album has such a strange, elusive, attractive and I wouldn't be afraid to write magical atmosphere. I'm following the blood trail. They lead down to the underground. Down the old stone stairs. Pus dripping down the walls and mad cries echoing from the endless underground passages. Caged, with fear in their eyes, they wait here for their death. Jdu temným městem a mám neodbytný pocit, že mě něco sleduje. Nestojí někdo ve stínu? Neviděl jsem nějaký podivný pohyb? Pod nohama mi křupají vzpomínky předchozího dne. Bolí mě hlava a někde ve vnitřnostech se mi usadil strach. Z nosu a uší mi vytéká zkažená krev. Padám pomalu k zemi a začínám se rozpadat v prach. Když pitvají moje tělo, tak zjistí, že jsem byl prokletý, že jsem v sobě měl démona. Vím jediné, přesně takhle jsem se cítil při poslechu nového EP "Fires in Deep Frost" newyorkských REEKING AURA. 

Někdy se to zkrátka stává. Objevím si pro sebe novou kapelu, začnu ji poslouchat a rád se k ní vracím. Najednou neexistuje svět kolem mě, je jenom hudba a moje maličkost. Přesně tohle se mi stalo i s touhle smečkou. Ihned jsem si sehnal celou diskografii a vy byste měli také. Stojí to opravdu za to. Poslouchejte hodně nahlas! 


Základem jsou klasické death metalové postupy, tak jak je známe třeba u kapel jako IMMOLATION, DEMIGOD, BOLT THROWER. Přidávána je potom spousta progresivních a neotřelých prvků. Můžete se tak setkat jak se vznešenými plochami, tak i s mocnými nástupy. Sešla se zde parta zkušených a talentovaných muzikantů, kteří moc dobře vědí, co a jak chtějí hrát. Skladby mají vždy jasné a silné melodie, bicí jsou přesné jako stroj na zabíjení, basa zkušeně duní a vokál je ostrý jako břitva. Zároveň všechno drží perfektně pohromadě. Jednotlivé songy v sobě potom mají ještě takový zvláštní, těžko definovatelný neklid, jakousi temnou mantru, která zní v pozadí. Opravdu rád jsem chodil ulicemi našeho města, se sluchátky na uších. Vyhledával jsem temná a chladná místa, na kterých vynikla síla téhle desky nejvíce. "Fires in Deep Frost" je vlastně takovou ochutnávkou, obsahuje jenom tři skladby. Je ale také příslibem do budoucna. Už teď se těším na další album. Doufám, že se ho dočkáme brzy. Letošní počin se totiž stal na dlouhý čas mým průvodcem v nekonečné mlze a smogu, které přikryje naše město pokaždé na několik dní. Zkrátka a dobře, REEKING AURA do mě zasekli svůj dráp a způsobili mi sněť v mém těle i mysli. Nemůžu tedy jinak, než vám nové EP doporučit. I'm walking through a dark city and I have a nagging feeling that something is following me. Is there someone standing in the shadows? Have I seen any strange movement? I fall slowly to the ground and begin to crumble into dust. When they dissect my body, they find that I was cursed, that I had a demon inside me. I know one thing, this is exactly how I felt listening to the new EP "Fires in Deep Frost" by New York's REEKING AURA. 

Sometimes it just happens. I discover a new band for myself, start listening to it, and love coming back to it. Suddenly there is no world around me, there is only the music and my smallness. That's exactly what happened to me with this pack. I immediately got the whole discography and you should too. It's really worth it. Listen very loud! 


It is based on classic death metal methods, as we know them from bands like IMMOLATION, DEMIGOD, BOLT THROWER. Then a lot of progressive and new elements are added. Thus you can encounter both sublime surfaces and powerful entrances. A bunch of experienced and talented musicians have gathered here who know very well what and how they want to play. The songs always have clear and strong melodies, the drums are as precise as a killing machine, the bass thrums expertly and the vocals are razor sharp. At the same time, everything holds together perfectly. The individual songs then still have a strange, hard-to-define restlessness to them, a kind of dark mantra that sounds in the background. I really liked walking through the streets of our city, with headphones on my ears. I was looking for the dark and cold places where the power of this record stood out the most. "Fires in Deep Frost" is actually such a taster, it only contains three tracks. But it is also a promise for the future. I'm already looking forward to the next album. I hope to see it soon. This year's release has become my guide for a long time in the endless fog and smog that covers our city every time for a few days. By and large, REEKING AURA have stuck their claw into me and made my body and mind sick. So I can't help but recommend the new EP to you.
